JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT (JA) CYPRUS BI-COMMUNAL
INNOVATION CAMP – 24 October 2014
On Friday 24th October 2014, Junior Achievement (JA) Cyprus organised the first Bi
-communal Innovation competition, an intensive experience that engaged TurkishCypriot and Greek-Cypriot students in entrepreneurial and collaboration
techniques. The event was supported by the US Embassy.
The one day event saw 98 students, aged 15-18, from across the country come
together in order to find a solution to a unique challenge. The students were
divided into 20 teams made up of 4-5 individuals.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT (JA) CYPRUS İKİ TOPLUMLU
İNOVASYON KAMPI – 24 Ekim 2014
24 Ekim Cuma günü, Junior Achievement Kıbrıs, iki toplumlu inovasyon kampının
ilkini düzenledi. İnovasyon kampının hedefi gençlerin girişimcilik ve yaratıcılık
yeteneklerini teşvik ederek ilerideki işlerinde ve girişimcilik alanındaki
yeteneklerini artırmaktır. Etkinlik ABD Elçiliği tarafından desteklendi.
Bir günlük İnovasyon Kampına Kıbrıs genelindeki özel kolejlerden öğretmenleriyle
birlikte 15-18 yaşlarındaki toplam 98 Kıbrıslı Rum ve Kıbrıslı Türk öğrenci
katıldı. Öğrenciler 4-5 kişilik gruplardan oluşan toplam 20 takıma ayrıldı.
Öğrencilerden bir iş sorusuna yanıt bulmaları istendi:
“Eğer bir işletme kurabilseydiniz, Kıbrıs’taki spesifik bir sosyal soruna çözüm
bularak toplum üzerinde olumlu bir etki bırakmayı sağlayacak ne çeşit bir yenilikçi
ürün, hizmet veya çözüm üretirdiğiniz?”

Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of
The English School of Kyrenia,
My reflections for this edition are still expressed with considerable excitement,
and it has been a year since I arrived. What is fascinating about this world-class
school is its relentless yearly preoccupation with quality. Superficially you might
read this edition and a past addition and speculate that something similar happened at the same time last year, but the quality of experiences improves year by
year as talented colleagues reflect upon their practice.
There have also been some huge new accomplishments which have already developed and blossomed throughout the year, an example in the SY is the Model United Nations, or MUN, programme. We have hosted our first Kyrenia based event
and teams are getting adept at gaining success in Istanbul where our team travels to compete on November
13th, 2014. Associated with this type of activity which fosters global responsibility and insight, we are immensely proud of our continued leadership Cyprus-wide of bi-communal peace and unity initiatives, hosting the Peace
Players year on year, and now winning new initiatives which you may have all read about recently. In this we
are expressing the importance to our students of grasping opportunities to help North Cyprus grow and play a
part on the world stage in the future – it is our children who will bring this about we believe.
We have improved so many systems within this year, which has in turn allowed us to become members of the
Council of British International Schools, or COBIS, which allows us access to ultra-fine training opportunities for
our staff, as well as setting a high quality benchmark for us to drive towards year on year. Membership also
helps us to attract very high calibre teachers from the UK and overseas. We have established the A-level Programme as well as the IBDP so that our talented students of all abilities have the choice of exactly the right
programme of study in the Sixth Form. We have put a lot of work into raising aspirations and building school
spirit, and things as simple as the renewed emphasis on appearance and attendance are the marks of a mature school that really means business as a world-class educational offering.
Our university and college placement goes from strength to strength as we get this year’s Y13 ready for great
successes in their IBDP, and we are helping our younger students to reflect, and use their time wisely throughout their time with us so that they become selectable by the best universities and colleges world-wide, including colleges at Oxford and Cambridge as well as Medical Schools world-wide.
We are also embracing programmes for students that are held in very high esteem world-wide like the International Award, or as it is known in the UK, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which will start after the December break. Other work goes unnoticed to some extent, lesson observations, sending our talented teachers
for stimulating training, and the daily checks we make to assure the highest quality provision possible. It is a
school-wide preoccupation, and influences everything from bus timings to the addition of salad bars as we remain restless in trying to give our students the very best possible in preparation for a successful future.
So, read on, and share our excitement in being part of an ever improving school with ultra-high aspirations!

The English School of Kyrenia’nın tüm öğrencilerine, velilerine, ve
personeline merhaba,
Gelişim üzerinden bir yıl geçmiş olmasına rağmen, bu sayıdaki düşüncelerimi hala oldukça
büyük bir heyecanla ifade ediyorum. Bu dünya standartlarındaki okulun en etkileyici
özelliği, yıl boyunca kaliteden ödün vermeyişidir. Bu sayı ile geçmiş sayıları kıyaslayınca, ilk
bakışta bazı etkinliklerin geçmiş yıllarda aynı zamanlarda gerçekleşmiş olduğunu
düşünebilirsiniz, ancak yetenekli çalışma arkadaşlarımız uygulamaları üzerine
derinlemesine düşündükçe deneyimlerin kalitesi her yıl gelişme göstermektedir.
Yıl boyunca gelişim gösterip halıhazırda filizlenen yeni olağanüstü bazı başarılar olmuştur,
bunlara Orta-Lise Bölümü’nden bir örnek olarak Birleşmiş Milletler Modeli, ya da kısaca
MUN, programını gösterebiliriz. Girne merkezli ilk etkinliğimize evsahipliği etmiş ve takımlar
İstanbul’da başarı elde etmek için yetkinleşiyorlar, ki mücadeleye katılmak için bizim
takımımız da 13 Kasım 2014’de İstanbul’a seyahat ediyor. Global sorumluluk ve içgörünün
gelişmesine yardımcı olan bu gibi faaliyetlerle bağlantılı olarak, Kıbrıs genelinde iki-toplumlu barış ve birlik girişimlerindeki
süregelen liderliğimiz, her yıl evsahipliği ettiğimiz Peace Players, ve son zamanlarda okumuş olabileceğiniz yeni
girişimlerimizle gurur duymaktayız. Bunlarla birlikte, öğrencilerimize Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın büyümesi ve gelecekte dünya
sahnesinde rol alabilmeleri için olanakları yakalamanın önemini ifade etmeye çalışıyoruz – çünkü inanıyoruz ki, bunu
başaracak olanlar çocuklarımızdır.
Yıl içerisinde, Council of British International Schools, ya da kısaca COBIS’e üye olmamıza olanak veren pek çok sistem
geliştirdik, ki bunlar personelimiz için incelikli eğitim olanakları sağlarken, aynı zamanda her yıl bizleri daha ileriye
taşıyacak yüksek kalite ölçütlerini de belirlemektedir. Ayrıca, üyeliğimiz Britanya ve yurtdışından çok yüksek kalibre
öğretmenlerin ilgisini çekmemize yardımcı oluyor. Altıncı yıla gelen her yetenek ve hünerdeki öğrencilerimizin kendilerine
en uygun eğitim programını seçebilmeleri için IBDP’ının yanında A-level Programını da kurmuş bulunmaktayız. Tutku ve
okul ruhu yaratmak için çok emek harcadık, ki dış görünüş ve okula devamlılık gibi basit gelen bazı hususlara
gösterdiğimiz önem, olgunluk evresindeki bir okulun göstergeleri olmakla birlikte dünya standartlarındaki bir eğitimin
sunabildikleridir.
Bu yılın 13. Sınıf öğrencilerini IBDP’teki muhteşem başarıları için hazırlarken, üniversite ve kolej yerleştirmelerimiz günden
güne güçlenmektedir, bu arada Oxford ve Cambridge yanında, dünya genelindeki Tıp Okulları dahil, en iyi üniversite ve
kolejler tarafından seçilebilmeleri için daha genç öğrencilerimize bizlerle geçirmekte oldukları süreyi daha akıllıca
kullanmaları için derinlemesine düşünmelerine yardımcı oluyoruz.
Aynı zamanda dünya genelinde saygın bir yeri bulunan International Award (Uluslararası Ödül), ya da Britanya’daki adı ile
the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, gibi programları Aralık ayındaki tatil sonrasında öğrencilerimiz için kabul edeceğiz.
Diğer çalışmalarımız da farkedilmeden devam ediyor, ders gözlemleri, öğretmenlerimizin stimüle edici eğitimlere
gönderilmesi, ve mümkün olan en yüksek kalite koşullarının sağlanması için yürüttüğümüz gündelik kontroller. Bu okul
genelinde devam eden bir uğraş olmakla birlikte, öğrencilerimizi başarılı bir gelecek adına mümkün olan en iyi şekilde
hazırlarken durmaksızın süren çalışmalarımızı, okul servislerinin zamanlamasından salata barlarının eklenmesine kadar
her şeyi etkilemektedir.
Bu nedenle, okumaya devam edin, ve çok yüksek hedefleri olup sürekli gelişen bir okulun parçası olmanın heyecanını

A Celebration of Academic Success at ESK, 2014
ESK’s first IB graduating class
The majority of ESK students achieved, or significantly exceeded, the IB world average of 30 points.
And an impressive 21% achieved a score of 35 points or over making them highly selectable for the
very top universities in the world.
Excluding gap year students, over 91% of ESK‘s graduating class have been awarded places at universities in the USA and UK, including the UK’s top 24 Russell Group universities.
ESK students win prestigious EU and USA scholarships
The English School of Kyrenia had more good news about its first graduating class with students Ferhat Yeşilada and Sıla Akın gaining EU scholarships to attend universities in the UK, and Sami Kader
and Uraz Şentürk gaining scholarships from universities in the USA.
Following a national selection process with both a written and interview component, two ESK students
Ferhat Yeşilada and Sıla Akın both gained large EU scholarships as they set off to attend university in
the UK. Sıla was selected as one of the top 4 in the country and was rewarded with a double award
over two years.
Uraz Şentürk and Sami Kader had already received scholarships and unconditional offers from universities in the USA ahead of receiving their IBDP results in the summer. In addition, Uraz has been chosen as one of the top 4 out of 400 applicants worldwide for an additional scholarship. This was awarded based upon his exceptionally balanced character and his ability to excel in academic and sporting
programmes as well as his ability to present himself professionally.
Overall, out of ESK’s first graduating class entering university in the UK or USA, 25% received a scholarship award. This is a truly exceptional proportion.

ESK’nın 2014 yılındaki akademik başarılarını kutluyoruz
ESK’nın ilk IB sınıfı mezunları
Dünyada IB not ortalamasının 30 olduğu dikkate alınırsa, ESK öğrencilerinin büyük çoğunluğu
beklenenden çok daha iyi sonuçlar elde ettiler. Öğrencilerin %21’i etkileyici bir şekilde 35 puanın
üzerinde notlar alarak, dünyadaki en seçkin üniversiteler tarafından tercih edildiler.
Üniversite eğitimine bir yıl ara veren öğrenciler hariç, %91’i, İngiltere’nin en iyi 24 üniversitesinin
bulunduğu Russel Group içinde olmak üzere, UK ve USA’da bulunan diğer üniversitelerine yerleştiler.
ESK öğrencileri prestijli EU ve USA bursları kazandılar
The English School of Kyrenia; ilk mezunlarından olan Ferhat Yeşilada ve Sıla Akın’ın EU bursları
alarak UK üniversitelerine, Sami Kader ve Uraz Şentürk’ün ise yine ödül ve burslarla USA üniversitelerine yerleştiklerine dair güzel haberler almıştır.
Ülkemizdeki yazılı ve sözlü tercih sürecini takiben, iki ESK öğrencisi Ferhat Yeşilada ve Sıla Akın, iyi
oranda bir EU bursu kazanarak, UK üniversitelerine yerleştiler. Ayrıca Sıla, ülke genelindeki öğrenciler
arasında ilk dörde girerek, iki yıllık EU bursu alma hakkı elde etmiştir.
Uraz Şentürk ve Sami Kader ise, geçtiğimiz yaz, henüz IBDP Diploma kesin sonuçlarını almadan önce
zaten USA burslarını almaya hak kazanmışlardı. Buna ilaveten Uraz, dünya çapındaki 400 öğrenci içinden ilk dörde seçilerek, ektra burs ve ödüle layık görülmüştür. Almış olduğu bu ödül, elde ettiği akademik başarısının yanında hem sporcu kişiliği hem de sunumundaki profesyonel yaklaşımı nedeniyle verilmiştir.
Genel olarak, ESK’dan mezun olan ilk öğrencilerimizden %25’i, burs kazanmıştır. Bu gerçekten
alışılmışın dışında bir orandır.

IGCSE Results 2014
ESK students gained 100% A*-C in ten subjects, equalling results from last year.
Art and Design including fine art gained a record 100% A* or A, and in French, Russian, Turkish, and
ICT 100% of results were in a range of A*-B, these are truly outstanding results.

2014 IGCSE Sonuçları

Resim ve Tasarım dersinde öğrenciler, %100 oranında A ve A* ile rekor elde ederken, Fransızca,

Cambridge Checkpoint Year 6 Exams
At the end of Year 6 all ESK students sit the Cambridge Checkpoint end of Primary examinations
which are externally marked and
assessed. This allows us to compare our Primary students’ attainment levels with students in
schools from around the globe. We
were delighted to learn that we
have been ranked by Cambridge
University Examinations with a
school average of ‘very good’, with the upper third of our students receiving the Cambridge International maximum rating of ‘excellent’ across all of the three examined areas of English, Maths and Science.
Cambridge’s report also revealed that the school is well above international expectations in all three
examined subjects. We were also delighted to learn that a number of ESK pupils got maximum marks
without dropping a single point in the exams (Maths, 9 pupils; Science, 8 pupils; English, 6 pupils).
Plans for our new academic year
By offering students a choice of either IB or A-Level programmes of
study we have generated a bespoke
process to optimise our students
placement at fine universities and
colleges within the UK, USA, Turkey,
and worldwide. We are following the
example of some of the very best
independent schools within the UK.
We have now developed new academic and pastoral structures and a team of exceptionally well-qualified teachers to lead the school
forward. We have recruited teachers, many of whom graduated from leading universities including Oxford and Cambridge, who have experience from leading schools, and can help our students aim high
and achieve their potential.
We are continuing to develop MUN (Model United Nations) and ESK has also been appointed as the
first independent centre in North Cyprus to conduct the prestigious International Award (known as the
Duke Of Edinburgh Award in the UK). Participation in such globally renowned activities are of selective
advantage as our students apply for university or college placement worldwide.
Leadership courses will also convene this year providing a further opportunity for students to access
world class opportunities.

6. Sınıfların Cambridge Checkpoint Sınavları
6. Sınıfın sonunda tüm ESK öğrencileri, Cambridge Checkpoint yılsonu sınavlarına girmektedir ve tüm
değerlendirmeler okul dışında yapılmaktadır. Bu bize ilkokul öğrencilerimizi dünyadaki diğer öğrencilerle kıyaslama imkanı vermektedir. Cambridge Checkpoint sınavlarındaki sonuçların dağılıma göre,
okul ortalamamızın “çok iyi”; İngilizce, Matematik ve Fen Bilgisi olmak üzere her üç alanda öğrencilerimizin üçte birinin “mükemmel” dereceyi almaları bizleri çok mutlu etmiştir.
Okul olarak aldığımız Cambridge raporu, her üç alanda olmak üzere uluslararası beklentilerin
üzerindedir. Bizleri oldukça mutlu eden bir başka konu ise, birçok ESK öğrencisinin her üç alanda da
hiç yanlış yapmadan tam not almasıdır. (Matematik, 9 kişi; Fen Bilimleri, 8 kişi; İngilizce, 6 kişi.)
Yeni akademik yıl için planlamalarımız
Öğrencilerimize hem IB Diploma hem de A-Level programlarını alternatifli olarak sunarken, İngiltere,
Amerika, Türkiye ve dünya çapındaki üniversitelere yerleşme prosedürleri sırasında, her birine kişiye
özel tasarlanmış eğitim programını verebilmeyi amaçlıyoruz.
Çocukların gerek akademik gerekse duygusal gelişimlerine katkı koyarak okulu daha ileriye götürebilecek, üstün yetenekteki öğretmen kadrosundan oluşan yeni yapılar oluşturuyoruz. Bünyemizde,
Cambridge ve Oxford gibi üniversitelerden de mezun olan, konularında oldukça deneyimli birçok öğretmen bulundurmaktayız ve bu öğretmenler çocuklara tüm potansiyellerini kullanarak başarıya ulaşmaları için tam destek vermektedirler.
Ayrıca MUN (Model United Nations) organizasyonunu geliştirmeye devam ediyoruz. ESK olarak, İngiltere’deki yüksek prestijli Duke of Edinburg olarak bilinen, “Uluslararası Program”ı uygulama yetkisine
sahip, Kuzey Kıbrıs’taki tek merkez olarak onaylanmış bulunmaktayız. Bu tarz uluslararası programlara katılımlar, öğrencilere dünya çapındaki üniversite ve yüksekokullara başvurular sırasında önemli
avantajlar sağlamaktadır.
Okulumuzda sunulmakta olan liderlik programları, öğrencilere dünyadaki diğer fırsatlara ulaşabilme
konusunda ayrıcalık getirecektir.

After some teambuilding and creativity exercises, the students had five hours to shape their ideas. They had access
to the Internet and business experts acted as mentors. All
teams then presented their solutions (products/services/
innovations) to a high-level jury. From these 20 teams, 6
finalists were chosen to compete in the finale.
Each of the six finalists had students from the English School of Kyrenia (ESK). Amongst the other finalists were students from Doğa College and TED. After an exhilarating welcoming address from Mr.
John Koeing, the US Ambassador of Cyprus H.E., and inspiring speeches from the judges, the six finalists were given 3 minutes for their presentations and 2 minutes for questions from the judges.
The winners of the first Bi-Communal Innovation Camp were:
1st prize: “Exporting Dried Lemons to Foster Economic and Social Prosperity among Both
Communities”
The team consisted of: Maria Christina Andreou (Pascal English School Nicosia), Miriam Marancos,
(English School Kyrenia), Kaan Ibrahim (English School Kyrenia), Andreas Damianou (Pascal English
School Limassol), Elpida Phithak (Foley’s School).
2nd prize: “NovaNova: Glow-in-the-dark Paint for Road Lines and Signs”
The team consisted of: Sine Özkaraşahin (English School Kyrenia), Yaz Artuner (American Academy
Nicosia), Mehmet Göksu (Cyprus Friendship Programme), Eftychia Hadjichristou (American Academy
Larnaca).
3rd prize: “UNICO: A Cultural Hub to Bridge the Gap between the Two Communities”
The team consisted of: Yaren Fadıloğluları (Cyprus Friendship Programme), Dimay Kağcan (English
School Kyrenia), Chryso Matthaiou (American Academy Larnaca), Yiannis Kellas (American Academy
Limassol), Yusuf Ziya İlerici (Eastern Mediterranean Doğa College).
JA Cyprus (www.jacyprus.org.cy) is a member of Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise Worldwide (JAYE), a global non-profit organization specializing in youth entrepreneurship education, that aims in
equipping young people with entrepreneurial, financial literacy and employability skills.
The prizes for the winning teams were electronic gadgets provided by Bionic. The winning team will
take part in a Junior Achievement Young Enterprise Europe event that will take place in Sweden in
2015.
This one day event allowed them to foster an understanding of the world of work and a spirit of entrepreneurship through the principle of “Learning by Doing”.
They presented themselves in a confident and professional manner and I am proud of them all.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT (JA) CYPRUS İKİ TOPLUMLU
İNOVASYON KAMPI – 24 Ekim 2014

Bazı takım çalışmaları ve yaratıcılık faaliyetleri sonrasında öğrencilere fikirlerini şekillendirmek için beş saat verildi. İnternete
ulaşımları olan öğrencilere ayrıca işletme uzmanları danışmanlık
yaptı. Daha sonra tüm takımlar (ürün/hizmet/yenilik) çözümlerini
üst-seviye bir jüriye sundular. 20 takım içerisinden finale kalacak
6 takım seçildi.
Finale kalan her altı takımda da English School of Kyrenia (ESK)
öğrencisi bulunmaktaydı. Diğer finalistler arasında Doğa Koleji ve
TED’e devam eden öğrenciler mevcuttu. Bu arada ABD Büyükelçisi Mr. John Koeing bu tür etkinlikleri
desteklemeye devam edeceklerini belirten teşvik edici bir konuşma gerçekleştirdi. Ardından altı finalist takıma 3 dakika içerisinde projelerini açıklamaları ve 2 dakika içerisinde de jürinin sorularının
yanıtlamaları için süre tanındı.

Kazanan takımlara Bionic adlı şirket tarafından çeşitli elektronik aletler hediye edildi. Birinci gelen
takım 2015 yılında İsveç’te yapılacak olan Junior Achievement Genç Girişimci Avrupa Birinciliği’nde
Kıbrıs’I temsil edecektir.
Bu bir günlük etkinlik, “Yaparak Öğrenme” prensibinden yola çıkarak öğrencilere çalışma dünyası ve
girişimcilik ruhu üzerine bir anlayış geliştirmelerine olanak verdi.

Helping Hands Charity Club New Campaign Announcement

We are writing to call upon your support for the secondary school’s Helping Hands Charity club. Last
year, as you may know, we raised a fantastic amount of money and became an affiliated school with
Build Africa’s Mitti Mingi, Kenya. The funds you all so kindly helped us collect have contributed to
building a new classroom for this impoverished school.
This term we have another challenge. We are establishing a “Food Bank” which we will donate to the
Refugees Rights Foundation. We are all aware of the terrible situation in Syria and Iraq. People are
fleeing for their lives and Cyprus gets her own share of refugees who are stateless and must start over
from scratch. This food bank will be an essential tool in providing material support.
We would ask if everyone could donate at least one item.
The food must obviously be dry food; rice, pasta, tinned products, coffee, jam, cornflakes… No perishable items please. MHD will be collecting our ‘Bank’ in the last week before the winter break.
Your child can bring the food to Mrs. Donohue’s classroom (U05).
Helping Hands would like to extend a tremendous thank you for your support and help in setting a
positive example for our pupils to become global citizens.

Helping Hands Yardım Kulübü’nden Yeni Kampanya Çağrısı

Sizlere, orta ve lise sınıflarımız tarafından yürütülen “Helping Hands Yardım Kulübü” için desteğinizi
istemek için yazıyoruz. Geçen yıl, bildiğiniz üzere, Kenya’daki Mitti Mingi isimli okul ile işbirliğine girilerek, oldukça iyi miktarda para bağışı toplamıştık. Elde edilen bağış ile bu yoksul okula yeni bir sınıf
yapılmasına katkıda bulunulmuştu.
Bu dönem yine böyle bir çalışma içindeyiz. Mülteci Hakları Derneği’nin öncülüğünde, adamızdaki mülteciler için oluşturulan “Yiyecek Bankası”na bağışta bulunacağız. Hepimiz Suriye ve Irak’ın içinde
bulunduğu korkunç durumun farkındayız. İnsanlar, kendi ülkelerinden kaçıyorlar, bir kısmı Kıbrıs’a
geliyor ve bu ülkesiz insanlar burada hayata sıfırdan başlamak zorundalar. Bu yiyecek bankası, temel
ihtiyaçlarının önemli bir bölümüdür.
Her öğrencinin en az bir yiyecek getirmesini rica ediyoruz.
Bu yiyecekler; pirinç, makarna, konserveler, kahve, reçel, uzun ömürlü paket süt, cornflakes gibi kuru
gıdalar olmalıdır. Lütfen kolay bozulabilen gıdalar göndermeyiniz. MHD, yiyecek ‘banka’mız için topladıklarımızı bizden, yeniyıl tatili öncesindeki hafta içinde alacaktır.
Çocuğunuz, getireceği yiyecekleri Mrs. Donohue’nun sınıfına (U05) bırakabilir.

Year 4 Egyptian WOW Day! -29 September 2014

Year 4 have spent the day dressed in wonderful costumes, dancing, singing and learning all about the
Egyptians. We have been archaeologists, digging for ancient Egyptian artefacts and discovering what
the objects might have been used for. We have been decoding secret messages that were written in
Egyptian hieroglyphics. We have even made our very own Pyramids and Egyptian death masks, like
the one that Tutankhamen had. The children have had a lovely day and we would like to send an
enormous thank you to all of the parents that helped create such lovely, detailed costumes.
4. Sınıf Muhteşem Mısırlılar Günü! -29 Eylül 2014

4. Sınıflar günlerini muhteşem kostümler içerisinde şarkılar söyleyerek, dansederek ve Mısırlılarla
ilgili pek çok şey öğrenerek geçirdiler.
Arkeologlar olup Antik Mısırlılara ait tarihi eserler bulmak için kazılar yaptık. Bulduğumuz nesnelerin
Mısırlılar tarafından hangi amaçlarla kullanılmış olacağını keşfettik.
Mısırlıların kullandığı hiyeroglif yazılarla yazılmış gizli mesajları çözdük.
Kendi piramitlerimizi ve Tutankamon’unku gibi Mısırlı ölüm maskeleri yarattık.
Çocukların harika vakit geçirdiği bu günde, bu harika, detaylı kostümleri yaratmakta yardımlarını
esirgemeyen ailelere teşekkür etmek istiyoruz.

Very Interesting Experiment by Year 9 4 September 2014

This experiment illustrates the story of a hunter who tries to shoot a monkey. When he fires the gun, the monkey is scared, lets go of the branch,
and begins to fall. The projectile is fired directly at the initial location of the
monkey. Because the monkey begins to fall at the same time as the projectile is fired, and due to the independence of the horizontal and vertical
components of motion, the projectile falls “with” the monkey and strikes
the monkey. Both the monkey and the bullet accelerate downwards at the
same rate due to gravity.
9. Sınıf Öğrencilerinden Çok İlginç Deney – 4 Eylül 2014

Bu deney bir maymuna ateş etmeye çalışan bir avcının
hikayesini gözler önüne sermektedir. Avcı tüfeğini
ateşlediği zaman, maymun korkup tutmakta olduğu dalı
bırakıyor ve düşmeye başlıyor.
Atılan cisim (bizim deneyimizde, bir pinpon topu) doğrudan
maymunun ilk bulunduğu pozisyonu hedef almaktadır.
Maymun, cismin atıldığı an ile aynı anda düşmeye
başladığı, ve hareketin dikey ve yatay öğelerinden
bağımsız olduğu için, atılan cisim maymunla ‘birlikte’
düşmekte ve maymunu vurmaktadır. Hem maymun hem
de kurşun yerçekimi nedeniyle aynı oranda aşağıda doğru
hızlanmaktadırlar.

Year 2 Alagadi Trip – 25 & 26 September 2014

This term, in conjunction with their topic, Under the Sea, Year 2 took a trip to
Alagadi Beach Turtle Project. They had the opportunity to see turtle nests
being uncovered and hear all about the turtle life-cycle from the local volunteer experts. They were amazed by the size of the turtle shell they had the
chance to handle and were all very excited to learn new facts. They had a
terrific time and hope to get the chance to go and see them nesting, with
their family, next year.

Bu dönem, temamız ‘Deniz Altı’ ile bağlantılı
olarak 2. Sınıflar Alagadi Sahili Kaplumbağa
Projesi’ne bir gezi düzenlediler. Gönüllü uzmanlardan kaplumbağaların yaşam döngüsü
ile ilgili bilgi edinirken, ortaya çıkarılan
kaplumbağa yuvalarını da görme olanağı
buldular. Öğrendikleri bu yeni bilgiler ışığında
heyecanlanan çocuklar, tutma şansı yakaladıkları kaplumbağa kabuğunun büyüklüğü
karşısında şaşkınlık duydular. Harika zaman
geçiren 2. Sınıf öğrencileri, önümüzdeki yıl bu
yavruları aileleriyle birlikte kendi yuva yaparken
gidip görebilmeyi diliyor.

We are pleased and honored that you have chosen ESK as the best school for your
child.
When you registered your child with us we promised to provide your child with a broad
and balanced curriculum that would allow them to develop as a knowledgeable and
confident young person. The programs of study we teach are designed to do this.
We employ some of the best teachers from the UK and abroad and ensure that the curriculum is well taught using a range of methods to suit the learning styles of all our individual pupils.
Part of this program includes our outdoor adventurous activity program which begins in
nursery and continues right through into the secondary school. In an environment outside their 'normal' classroom experience, pupils are encouraged to consider their own
and others' feelings, and the consequences of their actions, how to support each other
and how to deal with unfamiliar situations.

In the Nursery children are taken on tours around the school where they meet new people and see new places such as the secondary school upstairs, the ‘big ‘ children’s playground, Mrs. Nevzat's garden to name just a few. Later they begin to go further afield to
visit places without the support of you their parents. This continues throughout Key
Stage 1 where educational visits are a common feature of our curriculum. These visits
allow children to venture into unfamiliar situations and meet new people without their
parents.

Upon reaching KS2 the children will spend
whole nights away from home. For many children this is often their first time away from
home and can be a very powerful learning experience. To watch some go quickly from being
homesick, to enjoying this new experience with
their friends is always very rewarding. Pupils
have opportunities to experience success and
to celebrate their achievements, making a real
difference to their self-esteem and confidence.

Year 3 – Night in the school
When the children reach Year 3 we prepare a program which involves spending one
night at the school, sleeping in a place that they are not used to. They explore a setting
that they know but at a time of the day they have never seen.
They are given the chance to show that they are mature
enough to spend a night away from their parents and
cope with being in a strange place when they wake up.
They are supported by their friends and teachers who
they know well. It is the beginning of an adventure that
gives them confidence in themselves and prepares
them for independence, a vital feature of a good learner.

Year 4 – 2 Day 2 Night Residential
In Year 4 the children are taken a bit further afield and spend almost two days away
from home. This time they are in unfamiliar surroundings and this is a greater challenge. Again the children are supported by adults they know and are surrounded by
their friends. This time they encounter other adults and staff who will help in their care
while they are away. On this residential the children are challenged to think for themselves and the activities include some problem-solving and team-building activities.
Children are expected to be able to deal with their bodily needs such as dressing themselves, cleaning their teeth, remembering things such as bringing water when they are
outside in the day, putting on sun block etc. They are expected to follow instructions, be
in the right place at the right time, and cope by using thinking and simple problem solving skills if things don’t go to plan. They are also expected to make some decisions for
themselves and manage situations responsibly, such as what to do if they wake up in
the night.

This residential is designed to allow children to be themselves and become confident in
an unfamiliar world, while being aware of the needs of others. They are trained to view
themselves as part of a group, with other people in mind when deciding what to do in
different situations. It is a chance for them to begin to understand that in life cooperation and team work bring great results. The Year 4 residential also prepares pupils for
the longer residential courses that follow.

Year 5 & 6 – 4 Day 2/3 Night Residential
Years 5 and 6 offer pupils the chance to be away
from home for longer. If they have taken part in the
previous residential experiences, being away from
home is now easy for them. They know how to look
after themselves and can make simple decisions.
E.g. what clothes to wear for different types of activities, mountain walking, dinner, disco. They are encouraged to forward think about their own care e.g.
what will happen to your wet towel if you leave it on
the floor? They are trained to manage their time so
that they are ready for activities and are not late.

that they can find them and they enjoy the company of their friends. They can deal with
differences of opinion in groups without arguing because they are learning to listen to
each other and realise that other people’s ideas may be just as good as or even better

During these longer residential trips, the adventures they experience enable them to explore and fulfill their own personal potential. They learn about themselves, experiencing new things in new environments. By living and learning together day in and day out,
groups of children bond in ways unrivalled by other experiences. They learn the benefits
of teamwork, respect for others, camaraderie and overall shared responsibility, whilst
developing a keen sense of fairness, responsibility and notions of citizenship.

On our teambuilding challenges we have fun looking at he vital ingredients that make
up a true team and how to be positive and enthusiastic about solving problems. We
look at what makes someone a good communicator and put active listening to the test.
Pupils become aware that everyone’s opinion and input matters and are encouraged to
look for and value the strengths in others and respect each other’s differences. This
can be a true test of character and pupils can really shine
during these challenges and
often hidden strengths and
talents are shown.

Year 6 Karpaz Residential Trip Blog - 24-26 September 2014
Day 1 was very busy!
After the children arrived to Balcı Plaza and
settled into their rooms they enjoyed a fun
packed activity on ‘Senses’.
They had to work in teams to complete the
many challenges set for them which were all
based around their senses of ‘seeing’,
‘hearing’, ‘tasting’, ‘smelling’ and ‘touching’.
Day 1 ended with a campfire on the beach.
Children enjoyed singing, listening to stories
and watching stunts by their teachers and
friends.
They ate marshmallows cooked on the fire, and the hot chocolate and teddybear shaped little cakes
offered by Mr Balcı.

6. Sınıfların Konaklamalı Karpaz Gezisi Güncesi - 24-26 Eylül 2014
Karpaz’daki ilk günümüz çok yoğun geçti!
Çocukları Balcı Plaza’ya varışları ve odalarına yerleşmeleri sonrasında ‘Duyular’ odaklı eğlenceli bir
aktivite gerçekleştirdiler.
Takımları ile birlikte çalışarak kendilerine hazırlanmış olan, ‘görme’, ‘işitme’, ‘tatma’, ‘koku’, ve
‘dokunma’ duyuları eksenli pek çok zorlu mücadeleyi başarıyla tamamladılar.
İlk Günümüz deniz kenarındaki kamp ateşimizle son buldu.
Çocuklar hep birlikte şarkılar söylediler, hikayeleri dinlediler ve öğretmenleri ile arkadaşlarının
hazırladığı hünerleri izlediler.
Ateşte pişmiş marshmallow yeyip, Mr Balcı’nın çocuklara ikramı olan sıcak çikolata ile küçük ayıcık
şeklindeki leziz keklerin keyfine vardılar.

and then a ‘beach olympics’ on the Golden Beach.

Y9 Bottle Rocket Experiment - 30 September 2014

This experiment demonstrates how a buildup in pressure can
launch a rocket.
As we pump air through the water the pressure inside the
bottle builds up until the force of the air pushing on the water
is enough to push the cork out of the end of the bottle. The
water rushes out of the bottle in one direction whilst the
bottle pushes back in the other. This results in the bottle
shooting upwards.
Space rockets work in a similar way to the bottle, but instead
of squirting water they burn fuel to make a powerful jet of hot
gas. The force of the gas downwards pushes the rocket
upwards.
Isaac Newton worked out the three laws of motion which
describe how all objects move. The third law says:
‘For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’
This is demonstrated by the bottle rocket.

fırlatılmasına sebep oluyor.

The Cyprus Friendship Programme

The Cyprus Friendship Programme is the volunteer organization
in Cyprus that works with the CFP teens throughout the year.
The CFP Cypriot Coordinators provide the ongoing leadership
and peace-building training. They work tirelessly, providing the
CFP teens opportunities to promote peace through bicommunal activities, media broadcasts and group
presentations to various audiences on both sides of the divide.
The efforts in Cyprus have broadened to include the creation of
the CFP Friends and Family Association, an organization of
parents, friends and extended families of CFP teens. This
Association aides in fund-raising and in the development of bi-communal events.
Now that CFP teens are graduating from universities, a CFP Alumni Association will be organized as
well. The relationships which formed in their CFP year have continued through the years and the CFP
family has grown exponentially since its founding in 2009.
"When I applied for the Cyprus Friendship Programme's camp at Ayios Nikolas, I had no idea what I
was doing. I just loved the idea of living with 25 other people that I share my country with, but have no
prior knowledge about. I didn't know how many of them would become friends for life, even though
there are borders literally separating us. I have fought a lot against those borders, to be united and
not have signs of war through the capital, but joining the Cyprus Friendship Programme was the most
fulfilling activity silently protesting for peace. The daily schedule was quite busy, but it was worth it! To
wake up at 7 every morning to do so many fulfilling activities... We not only became aware of our
similarities as two forcefully separated communities, but became closer and closer. The closeness
was beyond us, even our families became more open minded. It was one of the best experiences in
my life let alone the most fun."

A Memorable Experience

When we met up the Larnaca Airport at 3 a.m. with sleepy eyes, we were filled with excitement as well
as tiredness. When we were sitting in our seats, waiting for the plane to get off, everyone from both
communities got to know each other and luckily was getting on really well. After a flight to Vienna, we
then took off for the Washington D.C. Airport and then a 40-minute ride to the George Washington University, Foggy Bottom Campus, which was where we stayed. It was probably the longest and most uncomfortable flight that we had but in the end it was definitely worth the effort. For 10 days, we shared
a room with 2-3 or 4 more people from the other community, so our rooms were mixed, which gave us
a long time to get to know each other better and more personally. In those 10 days, we have learnt
how to get along living with other people, respecting their lifestyle and getting to know their character
and habits, as well as getting academic education with daily 3 hour morning sessions we had with
Miss Irene Oh.
In those sessions we have learnt and debated about leadership and famous leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, peaceful revolutions, social classes, citizenship in general and being a good citizen.
Apart from these seminars we did, we (all together) have also created a blog for the "Bi-Communal
Summer Institute Group" in our lesson time, which is still active on https://
cyprusyouthinstitute.wordpress.com/, as well as visiting the Senate building and attending a senate,
seeing America's political structure more closely in some aspects, visiting the White House, many
monuments in the state, and the National Museum of Natural History, which all was unforgettable visits. Apart from these, every night, we also did a feedback of the day and some activities within our
group. We did one activity which was called "Your Cyprus Story" where everybody told the rest of the
group about an event that has really influenced them and their lives, or talk about an object that is
significant to them in a personal way and the reason behind it. In that activity, we cried together, we
laughed together, and I think it was one of the biggest things that really brought us together.
I really recommend this programme to others as it has really shown us that there are no differences
between the two communities and what they want for the island's future and personal goals. The Benjamin Franklin Bi-Communal Summer Institute has truly showed me myself, and the group that I was
with, that the national difference did not matter at all to love and live along with each other.

Crossroads Youth Theatre Camp

Crossroads is a summer camp that brings together
young people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with
an emphasis on the Greek speaking and Turkish
speaking Cypriot communities, for a ten-day period of
workshops that focus on using theatre as a tool for
creative expression and communication, multicultural
awareness and coexistence.
The camp proposes the exposure of young people to a
variety of creative workshops incorporated in its main
body of activities, providing a broad education on
theatre as an art form and how it can be shaped when
in contact with the ideas, abilities and interests of every
individual involved - young people, facilitators and visiting artists. All workshops act as an incentive for cultural
understanding amongst participants and a stimulus for creative expression, which nourish the development of
a performance - based outcome on the final day of the camp.
“I usually get asked, like every other Cypriot teenager about how I feel about
the existense of borders on our island. My answer usually is, 'I have no idea'
or 'It doesn't make sense, it's heart breaking. I don't want to talk about it'.
So far, I have attended the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of the bicommunial
Crossroads Youth Theatre Camp. These camps have been experiences that I
would say, are beyond words. I have met so many incredible people and
learned so much about the importance of art/theatre (also as a tool to
bringing communities together), about life, trust, the power of love and most
of all; the similarity of the culture we share with the Greek speaking Cypriots.
It was amazing to see that we share the same way of singing, dancing,
laughing, even shouting at each other, as well of so many common words,
just like we share the same land.
Crossroads is a theatre camp, so we develop many performance skills and
work around different types of theatre from all over the world; such as Noh,
Mime, Commedia dell’arte, Ancient Greek and African theatre. But what we
also do in the camp is to learn to live together; we share laughter and
tears, assuming there
aren't any borders, which
i think is one of best way
to show resistance to it.

Year 13 IB Art students are busy writing their scripts for their video submissions.
A new AS Art course started at the beginning of this year for students in Year 12. The Year 12 artists
only have four months to create their exciting coursework –so many have been coming into the art
studio after 3.30 pm to develop the studio pieces further.
Meanwhile, Year 11 artists are busy putting the final touches to art works for their coursework exhibition which will be displayed in the school during December.
Year 10 and 11 IGCSE students have been working on their coursework projects, developing unique
ideas inspired by either Surrealist Artists, such as Salvador Dali, or ‘modern’ abstraction, inspired by
Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso.

Yılın başında 12. Sınıf öğrencileri için yeni bir AS Resim kursu açılmıştı. 12 Sınıf ressamlarımızın bu
sınav kapsamındaki eserlerini yaratmaları için sadece dört ayları bulunmaktadır – o nedenle pek çoğu
öğleden sonra saat 3:30 sonrasında resim stüdyosuna gidip eserleri üzerinde çalışmaya devam
etmektedirler.
11. Sınıf ressamlarımız, Aralık ayında okul içerisinde sergilenecek sınavları kapsamındaki eserlerine
son rotüşleri yapmaktadırlar.
10. ve 11. Sınıf IGCSE öğrencilerimiz ise sınavları kapsamındaki projelerine yoğunlaşmış
bulunmaktadırlar; Salvador Dali gibi Sürrealist Ressamlardan ya da Paul Cezanne ve Pablo Picasso
gibi ‘çağdaş’ soyut eserler üreten ressamlardan ilham alarak kendi özgün fikirlerini geliştiriyorlar.

Y2 Fun Facts & Flippers – 10 October 2014

Year 2 were treated to a fantastic afternoon of fun facts and flippers, when Ian Chennell visited with
his scuba diving equipment. Mr Chennell, a former police officer in the UK, is now retired and is a keen
local diver. He brought the diving equipment for the children to dress up in and to learn more about
life under the ocean.
The children and teachers had an excellent afternoon and learned about diving signals, equipment
and water safety. We think the Year 2 teachers, Mr Helliwell, Mrs Hannay and Ms Mustafa also
enjoyed the equipment (maybe a little too much!)

ve dalgıçların birbirleriyle iletişim kurmak için kullandıkları
işaretleri öğrenirken çok iyi vakit geçirdiler.

Explorers’ lessons for children in
Foundation. All the children are going out
into our surroundings to investigate and
learn about the world around them. This
week we looked at the stories ‘The Very
Hungry Caterpillar’ and ‘Mad About
Minibeasts’ before going into the trees to
see what we could find. We used our
magnifying glasses to get a better view of
all the bugs and even brought some
snails back to class to show our friends.
The children absolutely loved being ESK
Explorers and it was a positive first
experience for all.

başlangıcı oldu. Çocukların tümü de açıkhavada araştırmalar yapacak ve etraflarındaki dünya ile ilgili
yeni şeyler öğreneceklerdir. Bu hafta, dışarıya çıkıp ağaçlarda neler bulabileceğimize bakmadan önce
‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ (Obur Tırtıl) ve ‘Mad About Minibeasts’ (Börtü Böcek Delisi) masal
kitaplarını okuduk. Börtü böcekleri daha iyi görebilmek için büyüteçlerimizi kullandık, hatta
bulduğumuz salyangozları arkadaşlarımıza göstermek için sınıfa götürdük. Çocuklar ESK Kaşifleri
olmaktan büyük keyif aldılar ve bu hepimiz için çok olumlu başlayan bir deneyim oldu.

We all had a great time during the camp. Pupils
improved rapidly at football, tennis, swimming
and badminton ready for the ESK Sports Academies to open. The pupils also made videos on
iPads of their best sports and showed parents
the skills that they had learnt. I am already looking forward to the next camp in October.

Autumn Sports Camp – 27, 28 & 29 October 2014

For the first time ESK's Sport Academies started practising for the upcoming fixture season. The
improvement from the students has been clear to see and we are developing the enthusiasm of our
young sports stars of the future.
Over forty students took part in the October Holiday Camp with three different sports: swimming,
football and tennis. The swimmers travelled to Ataturk Stadium to experience diving and tumble turns.
The football players travelled to a local football stadium and the tennis players had the school iPad to
use video analysis of their ground strokes. These camps are an exceptional way to develop and
nurture sporting talent and many of the students have achieved ESK Sports Academy status following
their success.
Sonbahar Spor Kampı – 27, 28 ve 29 Ekim 2014

ESK Spor Akademisi’nin başlangıcından itibaren ilk kez yaklaşan spor müsabakaları sezonuna yönelik
antremanlarımızı başlatmış bulunmaktayız. Öğrencilerimizin performansında bariz bir ilerleme
görülmüş ve geleceğin genç spor yıldızlarının heyecan ve hevesini geliştirmekteyiz.
Ekim ayında gerçekleşen Tatil Kampı’na kırktan fazla öğrenci katılarak üç farklı spor dalında –Yüzme,
Futbol ve Tenis- çalışmalar yaptılar. Yüzücüler Atatürk Stadyumu’na götürülerek dalış ve takla üzerine
çalıştılar. Futbol oyuncuları lokal bir futbol sahasına giderken, tenisçiler okul iPadlarını yer vuruşlarının
video analizini yapmak üzere kullandılar. Bu kamplar sportif becerileri yetiştirmek ve geliştirmek için
fevkalade olanaklar olmakla birlikte, katılan pek çok öğrenci, ortaya koymuş oldukları başarıyı takiben
ESK Spor Akademisi statüsü elde etmişlerdir.

Secondary Drama Rehearsals under way for “Grimm Tales”

Rehearsals are well under way for the Senior School
production of 'Grimm Tales' which is being
performed during the last week of the winter term.
The tales have been adapted by Carol Ann Duffy and
are not the sweet Disney tales of your youth - so be
prepared for the macabre and surreal with a few
little surprises thrown in for good luck.
After some brilliant auditions we have formed a
talented cast who have been working hard on blocking the scenes of the play, and it is exciting to
welcome a Year 13 IB student as guest director for one of the pieces.
Students are showing real enthusiasm for the production and we look forward to revealing their efforts
in a few weeks. The show will take place on Tuesday 16th, Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th
December and we hope to welcome as many of you as possible to celebrate with us.

Kış döneminin son haftasında sahnelenecek olan OrtaLise Bölümü okul tiyatrosu ‘Grimm Tales’ oyunu
provaları son hızla devam ediyor. Carol Ann Duffy
tarafından uyarlanan masallar, çocukluğunuzdan
hatırladığınız tatlı Disney masalları değil artık - o
nedenle, şans için birkaç sürprizin de eklendiği, biraz
ürkütücü, biraz gerçeküstü bir oyuna hazır olun.
Harika bazı seçmeler sonrasında oluşturulan yetenekli
oyuncu kadrosu, oyunun sahnelerini çıkarmaya başladılar bile; bu arada 13. Sınıf bir IB öğrencisinin
oyunda yer alan bölümlerden birinin ziyaretçi yönetmeni olacak olması heyecan verici bir gelişme oldu.
Yapıta büyük bir ilgi gösteren öğrencilerin, yoğun çalışmalarının eseri olacak oyunu birkaç haftaya
kadar sizlerle paylaşmaya can atıyoruz. 16 Aralık Salı, 17 Aralık Çarşamba ve 18 Aralık Perşembe
günleri seyircisiyle buluşacak oyunumuza büyük sizlerin de büyük ilgi göstereceğinizi umuyoruz.

CAS Update

As an IB World School, it has been our responsibility to ensure that our Sixth Form Students have been
involved in CAS (Creativity, Action and Service). For the last two years, this programme has enabled
our students to stay healthy as well as be involved in a wide range of projects and activities outside
the academic curriculum. It has given our students an opportunity to work within the community and
gain responsibility as a young adult should. Some of our students have been excellent representatives
of ESK by working for charities and organising fundraising events, running educational activities for
younger children in local nursery and primary schools, as well as SOS. Some have voluntarily been
working with the disabled and the elderly. Some have locally coached football, badminton and tennis
clubs, others have played for local and school teams. Our creative artists have been involved in drama
and art projects and our musicians have represented us in charity concerts and competitions. Our environmentalists have spent their summers working for the Marine Turtles Conservation Project. These
are a few of the successes have come with CAS. Through CAS, we have written outstanding university
applications for our students. They will also be able to include these highlights in their Curriculum Vitae when it is time to apply for jobs.
As CAS has been a success for our IB students, we have introduced SECA (Service and
Extra Curricular Activities) to our A Level Students where we are aiming to achieve the
same outcomes. It has been a good start so
far, as we now have students supporting different departments in their area of interest.
This programme will be run during school
time, when their lessons are not taking
place. We want our students to make the
most of their time at ESK, so that they can
graduate with a good education AND real life
skills.
Currently, we have musicians accompanying
the beginners in the music lessons. Athletes
leading sporting activities and supporting the
PE Department, a team who works collaboratively for our school counsellors and artists
getting creative with the younger ones in the
art department. This is to mention but only a
few. The year 12s have made an excellent
start to the year. They are a very enthusiastic
bunch!

Bir IB Dünya Okulu olarak, Altıncı Sınıf Öğrencilerimizin CAS (Yaratıcılık, Eylem ve Hizmet) içerikli
faaliyetlerde bulunmalarını sağlamak birincil sorumluluğumuz oldu. Bu program sayesinde son iki
yıldır, öğrencilerimizin sağlıklı olmaları yanında, akademik müfredat dışında kalan çok çeşitli proje ve
faaliyetlerle ilgilenmelerini sağladık. Öğrencilerimize, her genç yetişkinin yapması gerektiği gibi, toplum
içerisinde çalışma ve sorumluluk edinme olanağı verdi. Bazı öğrencilerimiz, harika birer ESK temsilcisi
olarak yardım kuruluşları için çalışmış, bağış kampanyaları organize etmiş, SOS dahil, bazı lokal kreş
ve ilkokullarında daha küçük çocuklara yönelik eğitsel faaliyetler yürütmüşlerdir. Bazıları gönüllü
olarak engelli ve yaşlılarla çalışmıştır. Başkaları lokal olarak futbol, badminton ve tenis kulüplerine
antrenörlük yapmış, diğerleri lokal ve okul takımlarında oynamışlardır. Yaratıcı sanatçılarımız drama ve
resim projelerinde görev alırken, müzisyenlerimiz yardım konserlerinde ve yarışmalarda bizleri temsil
etmiştir. Çevrecilerimiz yaz aylarını Deniz Kaplumbağalarını Koruma Projesi için çalışarak geçirmiştir.
Bunlar CAS ile gelen başarılarımızın sadece birkaçı. CAS sayesinde, öğrencilerimize olağanüstü
üniversite başvuruları yapmış bulunmaktayız. Öğrencilerimiz bu faaliyetleri iş başvurusu yapma
zamanları geldiğinde özgeçmişlerine de dahil edebileceklerdir.
CAS’ın IB öğrencilerimiz için ortaya koyduğu başarılı sonuçlarını takiben, A Level öğrencilerimiz içinse
aynı sonuçları elde etmeyi amaçladığımız SECA (Hizmet ve Müfredat Dışı Faaliyetler) programını
başlatmış bulunmaktayız. Halıhazırda iyi bir başlangıç yapmış, ilgi alanlarına göre farklı departmanlara
destek veren öğrencilerimiz mevcuttur. Bu program okul saatleri içerisinde, derslerinin olmadığı
aralıklarda yürütülecektir. Öğrencilerimizin ESK’da geçirdikleri süreyi dolu dolu geçirmelerini, ve mezun olurlarken iyi bir eğitimin yanında gerçek yaşam becerileri edinmelerini istiyoruz.

The ESK Library Media Centre

This is my second month at ESK. I’ve worked as a Librarian and Information Specialist in different areas before. I’ve worked with doctors who
always need up-to-date information, with civil engineers to prepare projects, with IT specialists creating web sites, and searching engines but to
work with students and teachers is the most exciting and most enjoyable
opportunity.
As librarians we believe in the words of Harold Howe: that “ what a school
thinks about its library is a measure of what it feels about education.” I
am really happy to work directors, educators and staff who care about
the library and support all library services.
I would like to highlight our most vital services to the library users.
The purpose of the ESK library is to provide a wide range of books and multimedia resources to support teaching and learning throughout the key stages, and foster a reading and information culture
that promotes independent motivated readers and learners for life. We aim to promote positive attitudes towards reading (including reading for pleasure), literacy and lifelong learning.
The Collection
We all know how important it is that students are exposed to the widest selection of reading material
in book and electronic format. The ESK Library Media Centre provides a comprehensive and wellbalanced range of materials and information sources to support the curriculum and leisure requirements of all teachers and students. The library has a collection of approximately 20,000 titles (Books
& E-books). The English book collection is divided into the following sections: Fiction (Secondary Fiction, Primary Fiction, Easy Readers, and Picture Story Books), and Non-Fiction (Secondary Non-Fiction,
Primary Non-Fiction, Secondary and Primary Reference). There is also Turkish Fiction and Non-Fiction
collection. Any donations to these collections would be appreciated.
The library also has a small range of DVDs, Audiobooks which can be borrowed by parents and teachers. The library subscribes to about twelve magazines and newspapers. Current issues are for use only
within the library, but back issues may be borrowed for one week by all users.

Visual Literacy Hits Year 6 English
Year 6 children in Mr Roberts’ English set have created some amazing work over the past two weeks
focussed on a 1 minute clip from the cartoon Aladdin. The students focussed on every detail and used
a range of ‘writer’s tricks’ to create some incredibly descriptive writing. They learned about a range of
stylistic devices (simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration) as well as use of the five senses, emotive language and action/reaction statements. Here are a couple of extracts from the class, I’m sure
you’ll agree they are wonderful to read…
‘As the illuminating stars trickled down through the
sapphire sky, a mysterious story began. A dark man,
with a dark purpose, waited impatiently on the dry,
sandy hill. Slowly, a second shadowy figure came closer; the shape looked as black as space. It was a very
peaceful night before
the figures met, and
then
everything
changed.’

Anti-Bullying Week – 20-24 October 2014

The ESK School Counselling Service organised an anti-bullying week at ESK during 20th-24th October.
Both primary and secondary students got involved in lots of activities to raise awareness about bullying. Assemblies had been organised on anti-bullying and each year group held different activities each
day. ESK students learned not only about bullying but also about friendship and positive behaviour. During this week, there were display board and poster competitions and winning classes received
prizes. Two “SAY NO TO BULYING!” display boards were created with the children’s contributions which
are now on display around the school and in the counselling room.

Zorbalığa Hayır! Haftası – 20-24 Ekim 2014
Yazan ESK Okul Rehberlik Servisi
Okul Rehberlik Servisi ESK’da ‘Zorbalığa Hayır!’ haftası düzenledi. Hem ilkokul hem de ortaokul ve lise
öğrencileri 20-24 Ekim haftası farklı aktiviteler yaparak zorbalıkla ilgili farkındalıklarını artırdılar.
Zorbalıkla ilgili sunumların da yer aldığı haftada sınıflar her gün zorbalıkla ilgili farklı etkinlikler
gerçekleştirdiler. ESK öğrencileri sadece zorbalıkla ilgili değil, aynı zamanda arkadaşlık ve olumlu
davranışlarla ilgili şeyler öğrendiler. Hafta boyunca pano ve poster yarışmaları da düzenlendi ve
kazanan sınıflara ödüller verildi. Ayrıca çocukların katkılarıyla, okul koridorunda ve rehberlik servisinde
sergilenen iki tane ‘ZORBALIĞA HAYIR DE!’ panosu hazırlandı.

Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips)

“I really wanted to help, so I sold one hundred and eighty loom bands and raised 480TL for the Help
Those with Cancer Association (Tulips). I know the money is going to a great cause.”
Representatives from the Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips) came to ESK on Thursday, 2nd
October to present Year 5 student Mckenzie Freeland with a lovely gift to show their appreciation.

Osman Türkay Kültür ve Sanat Vakfı Şiir Yazma Yarışması’nda Üçüncülük
– 23 Ekim 2014

Osman Türkay Kültür ve Sanat Vakfı, geleneksel hale getirdiği ilkokullar arası şiir yazma yarışmasını,
bu yıl, geçtiğimiz Mayıs ayında hayatını kaybeden Osman Türkay Kültür ve Sanat Vakfı Asbaşkanı,
edebiyatçı -yazar Ali Nesim anısına yaptı. Şiir Yazma Yarışmanın ödülleri 23 Ekim gecesi Colony Hotel
Salonu’nda verildi. ESK 7. Sınıf öğrencilerinden Yudum Yıldırım şiir yazma yarışmasında üçüncü geldi.
Gecede, ilk önce ilk üçe giren öğrencilerin ödülleri verilirken, Kıbrıs Türk Yazarlar Birliği ve Kıbrıs Türk
Sanatçı ve Yazarlar Birliği üyeleri Mahmut İslamoğlu, Şevket Öznur, Hasibe Şahoğlu, Altay Burağan,
Mehmet Kansu, Ceyhan Özyıldız ve Fatoş Avcısoyu Ruso, Ali Nesim’in sanatı, kültürü ve yaşamıyla ilgili
bilgiler ve anılar aktardılar; Ali Nesim’e ait şiir ve öyküler seslendirdi.
Third Place in Osman Türkay Art and Culture Foundation Poety Writing
Competition – 23 October 2014

This year the Osman Türkay Art and Culture Foundation dedicated its annual inter-primary school
poetry writing competition to writer-poet Ali Nesim, who was deputy chairman of Osman Türkay Art and
Culture Foundation and passed away last May. The award ceremony for the poetry writing competition
took place on 23 October evening at the Colony Hotel Hall. ESK Year 7 student Yudum Yıldırım came
third in the poetry writing competition.
In the evening students who took the first three places in the competition were presented with their
awards. Also Turkish Cypriot Writers Union and TC. Artists and Writers Association members Mahmut
İslamoğlu, Şevket Öznur, Hasibe Şahoğlu, Altay Burağan, Mehmet Kansu, Ceyhan Özyıldız and Fatoş
Avcısoyu Ruso, shared information and reminiscences of Ali Nesim’s art, culture and life; as well as
read Ali Nesim’s poetry and short-stories.

Kyrenia Animal Rescue (KAR) Donation - 21 October 2014

Last year the ESK Primary School Council came up with the concept of ESK SUMMER DAY as they
wanted to add a bit of colour and excitement to the final week of the 2013-2014 educational
year. Year 1-6 students all dressed up in their summer outfits and donated 5TL for a very good cause.
Half the money that was raised was donated to KYRENIA ANIMAL RESCUE in the form of 108 cans of
wet dog food and 140kg of dry dog food.
The student council representatives of 2013-2014 visited KAR on 21 October to deliver the dog food.
This gave them an opportunity to see what KAR is and also spend some time with the dogs.
This of course is not our first donation to KAR, as ESK daily gives leftover food from the dining hall.

Girne Hayvanları Kurtarma Derneği’ne Bağış - 21 Ekim 2014

Geçtiğimiz yıl, 2013-14 eğitim yılının son haftasına biraz renk ve heyecan katmak isteyen ESK İlkokul
Öğrenci Konseyi, ESK YAZ GÜNÜ kavramını geliştirmişti. 1-6. Sınıf öğrencileri çok iyi bir amaç doğrultusunda yapacakları 5TL’lik bağış sonrasında okula yazlık kıyafetleri içerisinde gelmişlerdi. Toplanan
paranın yarısı, 108 teneke ıslak köpek maması ve 140kg kuru köpek maması formatında GİRNE
HAYVANLARI KURTARMA DERNEĞI’ne bağışlandı.
2013-14 öğrenci konseyi temsilcileri 21 Ekim günü Girne Hayvanları Kurtarma Derneği’ne köpek mamalarını teslim etmek için ziyaret ettiler. Bu ziyarette hem ilk elden derneğin yaptığı inanılmaz işleri
gördüler, hem de köpeklerle biraz zaman geçirme olanağı buldular.
Bu tabii ki KAR’a ilk bağışımız değildir; ESK olarak yemekhaneden çıkan tüm yemek artıkları gündelik
olarak KAR’a gönderilmektedir.
