Dear Readers,
Our awareness of responsibility has tremendously increased largely due to the
positive and supportive remarks of our first time readers who have indicated that
they had no idea of the events that had taken place.
The events that we report on are truly awe-inspiring and we wish we could print
every story that we receive; however, due to the limited number of pages we are
able to print, we try to select one story from each province and try to reflect a
variety of stories and events that are happening around Canada.
During the past 3 months, the Anatolian Heritage Foundation (AHF) has
attempted to demonstrate the cultural richness of our beautiful Anatolia to the
best of its ability, and pledges to continue to do so. We would like to thank all
of the organizations, volunteers, and honorable guests that have contributed to
making the events portrayed a great success and hope that these applauded
events will prosper day by day, and become the means to increased friendship
and social cohesion.

duyurulması adına ne kadar önemli bir çalışma olduğunu ortaya koydu.
Kanada’nın her köşesinde üyelerimizin yaptığı o kadar güzel aktiviteler var ki seçmekte
zorlanıyoruz. Ancak sayfa sayımızın kısıtlı olmasından dolayı her eyaletten farklı
birer örnek haber yayınlıyoruz. Sayfa düzenimizde haberlerin altına koyduğumuz barkot

Geçen üç ay içinde Anadolu Kültürleri Fedarasyonu (AHF) kültür medeniyetimizi en güzel
şekilde tanıtmaya çalıştı. Bu güzelliklerin oluşmasında emeği geçen derneklerimize,

The two countries already collaborate as long-standing
allies in NATO and cooperate in various multilateral
forums, but they have not discovered each others’
true potential. Yet Although the sectors in which
Canadian and Turkish entrepreneurs have had the
ability to establish important business connections are
increasingly expanding, there needs to be a forum that
creates this initial point of contact.
In this regard, the 1st Annual Turkic Convention held
in Ottawa stands as a landmark event, which brings
together not only those of Canadian and Turkish
backgrounds, but has opened up the forum of dialogue
and interaction to those inhabiting the Turkic world as
a whole.
The success of the convention is a testament to the
importance of and need for such events and will hopefully
be the first of many, leading to a long and prosperous
connection between Canada and the Turkic world.
The Convention featured two panels on Turkey-Canada
Relations, a luncheon with participation of the dignitaries
from both countries and a Gala Reception to celebrate
Turkic Heritage in Canada and to establish a landmark
event for Turkic Canadians resembling the Turkic
Canadian solidarity. Prior to the convention, AHF also
hosted a welcome reception for the delegations from
Turkey and the USA at the new Intercultural Dialogue
Centre in Kanata.

Peel Students Reflect on Living as
Neighbours

Irwin Elman, Provincial Advocate for Children
Outstanding student art works and essays on the topic
“Who’s My Neighbour?” have been awarded by prominent
leaders of Peel Region at the Awards Ceremony of the
first Peel Art and Essay contest on February 20th at the
Mississauga Convention Centre.
Being a collaborative effort of the Intercultural Dialogue
Institute GTA and the Peel District School Board, the
Peel Art and Essay contest aims to motivate youth (high
school students) to reflect on a wide range of topics such
as intercultural understanding, peaceful coexistence,
social justice and responsible citizenship and gives them
an opportunity to express their ideas through their art
work and essays.
This year’s contest was supported by a number of
organizations in Peel region including Peel Children’s
Aid Society, Peel Regional Police, Art Gallery of
Mississauga, Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre and
Rogers TV Peel as well as a distinguished Selection
and Hosting Committee comprised of many prominent
names of the region.

Chief of Police Jennifer Evans, Peel Regional Police
Mining Giants Come Together in Toronto
Bringing together representatives from the Turkish mining
sector who were in Toronto to attend the PDAC Miners
Congress and Fair, the reception co-organized by the
Turkish Consulate in Toronto and The Canadian Turkish
Business Council brought together a large number of
Turkish and Canadian experts from the mining sector.
The reception, which was held at the downtown offices
of the Turkish Canadian Chamber of Commerce
saw the attendance of Honorable Ali Riza Guney,
the Turkish Consul-General, the Turkish Economic
Attache, Lucie Verreault the President of Turkish Gold
Miners Association, Umid Aktur, as well as numerous
representatives from the mining sector both in Turkey and
in Canada along with bureaucrats from both countries.

Anatolian Heritage Federation had its 4th Annual
Friendship Reception at Queens Park, Ontario on
March 17, 2014. The event was co-hosted by MPPs
from all parties represented at Queen’s Park. Twenty
MPPs including 6 Ministers and over fifty executive
staff attended the Reception. The AHF’s President
Saadettin Ozcan, emphasized the similarities between
Canada and Turkey, highlighting the importance of
working together on areas including virtual cultural
exchanges; youth and student exchange programs; and
economic partnerships, business development and trade
delegations. MPP Reza Moridi (Liberal), and MPP Jack
MacLaren (Conservative) shared their remarks on behalf
of the hosting committee. The program concluded with
d elieghts from a family picture and with the wonderful
Turkish cuisine which were prepared by the volunteers
of the Turkish Community.

Ontario Parlamentosu’nda dördüncüsü düzenlenen Dostluk
resepsiyonu, 20 nin üzerinde eyalet milletvekili ve 6 Bakanın
katılımı ile 17 Mart 2014 taririhinde gerçekleştirildi. Bu
senenin resepsiyonunun ev sahipliğini Queen’s Park’ta
temsil edilen 3 partiden 8 milletvekili yaptı. Konuşmalar
sırasında Kanada-Türkiye Dostluğuna vurgu yapılırken,
Türk toplumunun Ontario eyaletine yaptığı katkı ve Anadolu
Kültürleri Federasyonunun Ontario eyaleti ile Türkiye’nin
ilişkilerinin geliştirilmesi adına çalışmalarından takdirle
bahsedildi.

Harmony Between Canada’s Man
Prime Minister Stephen Harper: “IDI Edmonton is well
placed to promote and strengthen our diversity and
increase harmony between Canada’s many cultures.”
Stephen Mandel, Former Mayor of Edmonton
IDI Edmonton organized its 9th Annual Dialogue
and Friendship Dinner at Fairmont MacDonald Hotel
in Edmonton. This year’s theme was Responsible
Citizenship and Social Cohesion. United Way Edmonton
was the charitable partner of the event.
The night began with welcoming remarks and reading
of greeting messages from various dignitaries, including
Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper and Mayor Don
Iveson (brought by Councillor Amarjeet Sohi). It was
continued on with remarks provided by Premier Alison
Redford. Premier Redford commended the activities of
IDI in Alberta and underlined the importance of raising
‘Responsible Citizens’.
Ron Mandel, former Mayor of Edmonton, gave a
keynote address of the evening concerning citizenship
in multicultural society.
The event served approximately 180 attendees from
all walks of life,including 25 MLAs, the members of
the government, bureaucrats, business people, media
members, professors, religious and community leaders.

bilincini güçlendirme açısından çok önemli bir görevi ifa
ettiğini ve bu çalışmaların barış ve birbirini anlama kültürünün
gelişmesine katkı sağlayacağından emin olduğunu belirtti.
Sorumlu Vatandaşlık ve Sosyal Uyuşma konulu Programın
ana konuşmasını Edmonton eski Belediye Başkanı Stephen
Mandel’nın yaptığı yemeğe 25 milletvekili olmak üzere üst
seviyede katılım vardı.

Students From Nile Academy Raise
Funds for Philippines Disaster
Students of Nile Academy in Toronto Give Donations to
Victims of Typhoon
Sebnem Gul presented Junever Mahilum-West,
the Philippine Consul General , with a $2000 check
Students from Nile Academy took initiative and organized
a fund-raising campaign for the Philippines to help
them deal with the devastation left behind by Typhoon.
Members of the Nile Academy Student Council visited the
Philippines Consulate General on Wednesday, November
20, 2013 to forward the donations and demonstrate their
support. Sebnem Gul presented Junever Mahilum-West,
the Philippine Consul General, with a $2000 check.
The money will be donated to UNICEF, which will to be
matched by the Canadian government. Philippine Consul
General, Sebnem Gul, expressed her gratitude for Nile
Academy’s efforts and mentioned that Turkey was one
of the first countries to provide relief to the Philippines.

The night also featured two excellent Community
Service Award presentations. The first award was
presented to Dr. Charles Pascal of the Ontario Institute
for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University
of Toronto. Dr. Pascal received his award from Dr.
Mamdouh Shoukri, President and Vice Chancellor
of York University, who presented it on behalf of the
Hosting Committee of the dinner. The second award
was presented to the Greater Toronto Civic Action
Alliance. John Tory, Chair of the Civic Action received
the award from Bill Fisch, Chair and CEO of York
Region.

John Ralston Saul, prominent Canadian writer and
President of PEN International, gave a keynote speech
at the evening concerning citizenship in a multicultural
society. He spoke about the importance of responsible
citizenship, using Toronto’s recent Ice Storm as an
example where people acted as responsible and
inclusive citizens. Saul continued on to describe the
various characteristics of a responsible citizen, citing
qualities such as being engaged, conscious, empathetic
and having courage. He stated that many new Canadians
fit these characteristics and they not only contribute to
the economy but to our civilization and culture as well.

The Anatolian Heritage Federation held its 1st Annual
Friendship Reception at the Saskatchewan Legislative
Assembly on March 11, 2014. The event brought
together not only the Turkic community, but also MLAs
including Speaker of the House Dan D’Autremont, four
Ministers, two Deputy Ministers, Opposition Leaders,
twenty-three MLAs, and executive staff. During their
speeches, the Speaker, Ministers and Opposition
Leaders commended the activities of the “New Turkic
Community” in Saskatchewan and emphasized the
importance of working together toward improving
relations and contributing to the local economy and
community. The participants enjoyed Turkish culture and
the wonderful Turkish cuisine, which was prepared by
the volunteers of the Turkish Community.

resepsiyonu, Parlamento’daki milletvekillerinin yarısından

Green Faith: Exploring what religious
institutions can offer to protect the
environment.
Calgary IDI went green before 2014’s St. Patrick’s Day
by hosting its inaugural Green Faith Dinner and Panel
Discussion. Emceed by Calgary broadcasting veteran,
Darrel Janz, the evening enlightened over 110 guests
at the Calgary Greenwood Inn on how major Calgary
faiths are addressing environmental issues. Aboriginal,
Islamic, Christian, Jewish and Buddhist representatives
spoke strongly, openly, and beautifully cohesively for
what individuals, communities, Albertans and Canadians
alike must strive for and embrace in order to sustain our
mutually divine world.

Muslims Commemorate the Birth
of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h)
Canada-Wide Religious Celebrations Bring Together the Faithful
Celebrating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, the
guests enjoyed numerous performances held by the
Living Arts Centre and other Canadian institutions.
Our Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) should be perceived as a
role model to achieve peace, brotherhood and friendship
detached from pretension.
Programs were held by many cities, and they ended with
prayers and ilahis - songs that praise God or extols the
characteristics of the Prophet.
Held at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga to
commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad
(Pbuh), the event brought together a large number of
the faithful in the GTA. The night featuring live musical
performances and recitations was both emotional
and fulfilling. The attendees were able to enjoy the
performances of Juneyt Yetkiner on the guitar and voice
artist, Murat Ceylan, as well as the Quran recitation of
Habib Alizade, and the performance of the Nile Academy
student choir performing numerous well-known nasheeds.
The Prophet’s Path magazine as well as a small hadith
books were handed out at the conclusion of the event as
part of a series of events with the same title.

Living Arts Center, manevi bir geceye sahne oldu. İnsanlığın
iftihar tablosu Hz. Muhammed’in (s.a.v) dünyaya teşriflerinin
kutlanıldığı Mevlid Kandili’nde bine yakın insan Peygamber
Yolu’nda buluştu.
Dicle İslam Vakfı’nın organize ettiği gecede rahmet
peygamberi Kur’an, İlahi, kaside ve dualarla anıldı. Program
sonunda katılımcılara, mevlid şekeri, Peygamber Yolu
dergisi ve 40 hadis kartelası hediye edildi.

James Harrington Sheds Light on
the Hizmet Movement
James C. Harrington Kanada da seminerler verdi.
Dr. James C. Harrington, the author of the book titled
Democracy in Turkey, and the co-organizer of this event
presented his research in two seminars held in Edmonton
and Regina at the University of Regina.
Harrington spoke about the past and present of the
Hizmet movement and the legal battles it is currently
fighting in Turkey. The talk was of great interest to students
and academics alike and attracted a very large crowd. At
the conclusion of the seminars, Harrington responded to
questions relating to current unfolding events in Turkey
in relation to the movement.

Teach Abroad in Turkey: An Opportunity of a Lifetime
The Teach & Travel program has been designed to
facilitate studies in English by Turkish students from
native speakers.
A group of undergraduate and post graduate university
intellectuals will be given the opportunity of a lifetime -- to
teach and travel in one of the most naturally, culturally,
and spiritually vibrant countries of the world: Turkey.
ABC provides students in Turkey the convenience of
learning English from native speaking university students.
Thus, the Teach & Travel program has been designed
to facilitate studies in English by Turkish students from
native speakers.
In addition, Teach & Travel 2014 also offers optional
internship programs and Read & Lead events, which
enable its young participants to gain valuable work
experience and spiritual enhancement. Recently, ABC
has hosted a Holiday Getaway event including a series
of interviews that have determined the individuals who
will be participating in this year’s Teach & Travel program.
ABC will be considering new applicants in the near

Dialogue Institute were officially opened with an

IDI Kanada merkez ofisi’nin açılışı Göçmen ve Vatadandaşlık
Bakanı Michael Coteau ile birlikte birçok üstdüzey yetkilinin
katılımıyla gerçekleşti. Ontario Eyaletinde göçmen olan
vatandaşlara ihtiyaca ve göçmenlerin bu topluma yaptığı
katkılara değinen Bakan Coteau, kendisinin de bir göçmen
aileye mensup olduğunu ve bundan gurur duyduğunu
söyledi. Göçmenlerin Kanada toplumuna tam olarak entegre
olmasının yaklaşık 7 ila 10 sene olduğunu belirten Bakan;
bu entegrasyonu hızlandırılması adına bir yandan bu
kişilere yönelik devletin yapmış olduğu yatırımların yanında
IDI gibi kurumların yapmış olduğu toplumsal kaynaşma ve

from the Anglican Diocese of Montréal, Prof. Ira Robinson,

Jewish Studies at Concordia University, and Dr. Hamid

The Canadian Turkish Friendship Community held an
event called “Loyalty to the Martyr of the Çanakkale War”
at Don Bosco Secondary School on Sunday, March 23.
A famous Turkish country music singer, Gokmen, and a
well-known poet, Ahmet Bozkus from STV and Burc FM
Radio came from Turkey to remind us how our Ottoman
soldiers died at the Çanakkale War. Bozkus recited his
poems and Gokmen played the traditional instrument of
Saz while many of attendants had emotional moments.

The Intercultural Dialogue Institute Ottawa organized
its 9th dialogue and friendship dinner at the newly built

Between March 10th and March 14th, 2014, IDI chapters,
Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Ottawa and KitchenerWaterloo throughout Canada held evening dinners and
talks on the Strategic Defamation of Fethullah Gulen with
Dr. Dogan Koc, Executive Director of the Gulen Institute.
Koc stressed that critic defamation was not referring to
people who criticized the ideas of Gulen or the movement
itself, but instead defamation was when critics put forward
false claims in order to impeach and damage Gulen’s
character. He also mentioned that there were two major
views of Gulen – the Turkish one and the American one.
In Turkey, ultra secularists and radical Islamists viewed
Gulen as an American puppet, a Zionist, and a Vatican
agent. While in America, Gulen was seen as Islam’s
Trojan’s Horse, an American Khomeini, and as someone
who was trying to resurrect the new Ottoman Empire and
universal caliphate. All of which were false and ridiculous
statements clearly meant to defame Gulen.

Batı’nın Truva atı, Super NATO ve BOP ılımlı İslam projesi,
bir Siyonist ve bir Vatikan ajanı veya Papa’nın gizli Kardinal’ı
iftirasını atıyorlar. Eş zamanlı olarak ABD’de ise Gülen’i
Amerikan Humeynisi, Osmanlı’yı yeniden kurmaya çalışan
İslam halifeliği peşinde Hristiyanları müslümanlaştıran bir
misyoner olarak tanıtıyorlar” dedi.
Hizmet hareketinin siyasi bir yapılanma içinde olmadığını
herkesin bildigini ifade eden Dr. Koc hizmetin amacı eğitim,

Nile Academy Excels at the Toronto Science Fair
Nile Academy has received 2 Silver
and 7 Bronze Medals from the Science
Olympiad that is being held in Toronto.
Students were very excited and happy after the
competition. “We love our school very much. We are
trying hard not to disappoint our teachers who are
working day and night for us,” they said happily.
Grade 1 students, Mesud Ozcan, Taylan Ozcan, Roberto
Menzona and Doguhan Duzguner, won bronze medals
with their project about how different types of materials
absorb water. Grade 5 student, Akif Eren won a bronze
medal with his project about which type of water is best
for watering plants. Grade 7 and 8 student, Noor Shabir
and Feyza Lafci won a Silver Medal by creating a better
hand sanitizer than the ones being used at hospitals.
Grade 11 students, Sila Babacan and Ezgi Kosak, won
a bronze medal for their project about how dandelion tea
kills cancer cells in your body.

’s University Acceptance Rate Continues
Nile Academy’s Tradition Continues
Nile Academy’s graduating Grade 12 students have
already started receiving university acceptance
from highly reputed university institutions from all
around Canada. By and large, it is honorary for
Nile Academy to have over a 95% graduation rate
and a 95% university acceptance rate.
One of the key components of Nile Academy’s
education program is its “Individualized Learning
Program” approach where each student starting
from grade 9 has an Individualized Learning
Program (ILP). The main goal of the ILP is to
ensure and track a program for high school
graduation and university entrance of each
student. This is a written document, signed by
the student, parents and supervisors specifying
the student’s academic goals for the year. ILP are
developed by the supervisor, parents, and student
where appropriate.
Parents are encouraged to actively participate
in the formation of the ILP, which includes the
Present Level of Educational Performance
describing how well the student is performing
at that time. Specific long-term academic goals
and other skills are determined and short-term
objectives also are identified. These objectives are
measurable, intermediate teaching steps to aid
the student in achieving his/her long-term goals.
Methods of determining progress are outlined in
order to measure the student’s progress toward
the ILP goals.
