Mrs Taylor : We should do something for Sally. It’s her birthday, but she is very upset. We can make
her feel better.
Mr Taylor : Yes, Jane, but what should we do?
Sandy : We can take her to lunch, mum. Fresh air can make her feel better.
Mrs Taylor : No, I don’t think so. She shouldn’t go out. I called her mother in the morning. She was
still ill.
Mike : I agree with you, mum. We can make a surprise birthday party for her or we can prepare a
“film day”. We can watch films. This doesn’t exhaust her.
Mrs Taylor : I think we had better make a birthday party.
Sandy : Yes, but how can we prepare the house when she is at home?
Mrs Taylor : I’ll call her mother. She can help us. I can go there when she is asleep in her room. I can
decorate the sitting room by myself or I can request her mother to help me.
Mr Taylor : I think you had better call Michael. He decorated the party room at school last year. It
was wonderful. He can decorate the room very well.
Mrs Taylor : That’s a good idea, Tom. So, what shall we do now?
Sandy : I’ll go and order a chocolate cake.
Mike : You had better order a fruit cake. Sally likes it more.
Sandy : OK. Dad, can you buy the decorations? And Mike, you buy the drinks, please.
Mr Taylor : OK. Jane, you go to Sally’s house. We will bring the decorations and the drinks there.
Mrs Taylor : Well, I’ll call Sally’s mother first. Tom, bring some music CDs, and Mike don’t forget to
call your classmates. You should be there at five o’clock.
Mike : OK. Let’s go.

Dear Agony Aunt,
I’m a 14- year-old boy. My best friend is Ray. We used to do everything together. We used to plan
our whole week every Sunday. For example, he likes playing basketball very much. We used to play
basketball every Monday. We used to go the library every Tuesday. We used to go to the cinema
every Wednesday. We really liked spending time with each other.
Last Sunday he didn’t call me to plan our week. I called him to meet, but he said, “Sorry, Mark. I don’t
feel well today. I will stay at home.”. I said OK and went out to do some shopping. I saw him with
Bryan at the mall. They bought tennis rackets. They didn’t see me. We didn’t use to lie to each other.
I think I’m not Ray’s best friend any more. I sent him an e-mail and wrote, “You shouldn’t lie to me.
You were my best friend.”. He didn’t reply to it. Today is Thursday. We used to go skiing with our
friends every Thursday, but he still didn’t call me. What should I do? Please help me.

UNIT 2 – ROAD TO SUCCESS – STUDY SKILLS
PAGE: 16
Do you prefer to study lying down or sitting up erect? The answer is about your study habits and also
your dominant brain side. The brain has two parts, left and right hemispheres. If you prefer to study
lying down, you may be right brained. The right hemisphere sees the whole picture first before the
details. If you are right brained, it will be difficult for you to follow a lesson without an outline. If
that is the case, you should read the chapter before class. The right hemisphere is the more creative
half of the brain. It recognizes faces, imagines, has music talent, likes creative writing like drama and
poetry. Moreover, right brained people are good at meditation and art.
If you are a right brained person, then you are a visual learner. You must study according to your
dominant brain side. While studying, you should use drawings or charts with your notes. You can also
print off images and include them in your notes if you do not want to draw.

Amy : What are you doing, Jim?
Jim : I’m studying the states of matter, but I forget them very quickly.
Amy : You can’t learn through reading, Jim. Remember the learning styles test. You are a kinaesthetic
learner. You must study according to it. Let’s make an experiment. I’m sure you’ll learn better.
Jim : OK. What do we need for the experiment?
Amy : First, we need a kind of container. Give me one, please.
Jim : Do you prefer a plate or a pan?
Amy : I prefer a pan to a plate. The heat can break the plate.
Jim : OK. Here you are.
Amy : Now, take a piece of ice from the freezer.
Jim : OK.
Amy : Put it in the pan and put the pan on the heater.
Jim : OK. What is next?
Amy : Look. The ice cube is solid. It doesn’t take the shape of the pan because it is hard. Now, it’s
melting. It will take the shape of the pan when it becomes liquid.
Jim : Yes. Look! It’s all water now. Water is liquid and liquids take the shape of their containers.
Amy : That’s true. And now, we must heat more. The water is boiling and it is evaporating. Do you see
this vapour?
Jim : Yes.
Amy : It is the gas form of matter. When the water evaporates, it turns into gas. Hold a cold plate on
the vapour.
Jim : Oh! It becomes water again.
Amy : Yes. When the water vapour hits a cold surface, it becomes water. Rain happens like this. Do
you understand better now?
Jim : Absolutely. Thank you very much, Amy.

UNIT 3 – IMPROVING ONE’S LOOKS – BODY CARE
There are a lot of chemicals in most of the body care products. Most of the chemicals in those
products go directly into your bloodstream. There are cancer-causing chemicals everywhere these
days. For example, in the products we use on our bodies - soaps, shampoos, lotions, toothpaste,
sunscreen lotion - anything we use for personal care. The products you use for personal hygiene
should help you stay healthy, not make you sick. Here are five important questions you should ask
before you buy any skin care or body care product:
1. Are the things on the label of the product true?
2. Does this product contain any cancer-causing ingredients?
3. Are there any other harmful ingredients in the product?
4. Does this manufacturer produce safe and healthy products?
5. Will the ingredients in this product harm the environment?
Forget about the pretty packages. Before buying a product, read the ingredients. Search the
Internet about these ingredients. If you are sure they are harmless, search the manufacturer. Is it
trustworthy enough to buy its products? Does it produce organic products? Are its products
environmentally friendly? If your answers are “Yes.” to these questions, you can buy that product.
