The answer to the question is apparently a matter of dispute. The invention of the wheel, the discovery of America or the invention of the internet, all may the leading outcomes in the human history, but the discovery of fire, or, more precisely, the controlled use of fire was probably one of the most significant human discoveries. The earliest evidence for controlled use of fire is at the Lower Paleolithic site of Gesher Benot Ya'aqov in Israel, where charred wood and seeds were recovered from a site dated 790,000 years ago. Fire's purposes are multiple, some of which are to add light and heat, to cook plants and animals, to clear forests for planting, to heat-treat stone for making stone tools, to defeat an enemy, to run devices and the list goes so on. Without fire, man would never have been able to create civilizations and survive on the planet in that fire is as fundamental as water or food. The use of fire is one of the main differences of what makes man distinct from other organisms. 1.
