When the women Disciples of the Lord had
learned from the Angel the joyful message of
the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral
decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles
triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ
God has risen, granting His great mercy to the
world.

As first of the Apostles to be called, O

Επειδή όμως εγνωρίσαμεν καλά ότι ο άνθρωπος δεν γίνεται δίκαιος, δεν αποκτά την δικαίωσιν
ενώπιον του Θεού από τας τυπικάς διατάξστου μωσαϊκού Νομου, αλλά μόνον δια της φωτισμένης
ενεργείας και ενεργού πίστεως στον Ιησούν Χριστόν, και ημείς επιστεύσαμεν στον Χριστόν Ιησούν,
δια να γίνωμεν δίκαιοι από την πίστιν και με την πίστιν στον Χριστόν και όχι από τα έργα του
μωσαϊκού Νομου. Διότι, όπως άλλωστε έχει γραφή και εις την Παλαιάν Διαθήκην, “δεν θα δικαιωθή
ποτέ κανείς από τα έργα του Νομου”. 17 Εάν δε ημείς, αφήσαντες τον Νομον και ζητούντες να
επιτύχωμεν την δικαίωσίν μας δια της πίστεως και επικοινωνίας μας με τον Ιησούν Χριστόν,
ευρεθήκαμεν στο κεφαλαιώδες αυτό θέμα αμαρτωλοί, τότε έρχεται στο στόμα το παράλογον ερώτημα·
άρα γε ο Χριστός που μας εκάλεσεν εις αυτόν τον δρόμον, μας ηπάτησε και είναι υπηρέτης αμαρτίας;
Μη γένοιτο να σκεφθώμεν ποτέ τέτοιαν βλασφημίαν. 18 Διότι, εάν εκείνα τα οποία έχω καταργήσει ως
άχρηστα, δηλαδή τα τυπικά έργα του μωσαϊκού Νομου, αυτά πάλιν επαναφέρω εις την ισχύν και τα
τηρώ, αποδεικνύω τον ευατόν μου παραβάτην, διότι έτσι ομολογώ, ότι η προηγουμένη παραμέλησις
των τυπικών διατάξεων του Νομου ήτο αμαρτία. 19 Αυτό όμως δεν είναι αληθινό, διότι εγώ δια του
Νομου, τον οποίον κατήργησα και ο οποίος καταδικάζει εις θάνατον κάθε παραβάτην, έχω πλέον
αποθάνει δι' αυτόν, δια να ζήσω πλέον εν τω Θεώ, χάρις εις την πίστιν μου προς τον Χριστόν. 20 Εγώ
έχω σταυρωθή μαζή με τον Χριστόν και δεν ζω πλέον εγώ, ο παλαιός φυσικός άνθρωπος, αλλά ζη μέσα
μου ο Χριστός. Αυτήν δε την ζωήν που ζω μέσα στο σώμα μου τώρα, την ζω με την χάριν και την
δύναμιν της πίστεως στον Υιόν του Θεού, ο οποίος με έχει αγαπήσει και παρέδωκε τον ευατόν του εις
σταυρικόν θάνατον, δια την σωτηρίαν μου.
EPISTLE
The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians. 2:16-20
Brethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the
law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in
Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I
build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law
died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but
Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved
me and gave himself for me.

Ειδικώτερα δε δια τον πλούτον ακούσατε και αυτήν την παραβολήν· Ενας άνθρωπος ήτο πλούσιος
και εφορούσε κόκκινον πανάκριβον ένδυμα και λευκόν, λινόν πολυτελή χιτώνα. Και κάθε ημέρα
ηυφραίνετο με πολυδάπανα λαμπρά συμπόσια. 20 Εζούσε δε τότε και κάποιος πτωχός ονάματι
Λαζαρος, ο όποιος ήτο παραπεταμένος κοντά εις την μεγάλην εξώπορτα του πλουσίου, γεμάτος από
πληγάς. 21 Και αυτός επιθυμούσε να χορτάση την πείνα του από τα ψίχουλα, που έπιπταν από το

τραπέζι του πλουσίου. Και σαν να μην έφθαναν αυτά, οι σκύλοι έγλειφαν τας πληγάς του γυμνού
σχεδόν σώματός του. 22 Συνέβη δε να πεθάνη ο πτωχός και να μεταφερθή από τους αγγέλους εις τας
αγκάλας του Αβραάμ, στον παράδεισον δηλαδή όπου ο Αβραάμ μαζή με τους δικαίους αναπαύονται
και ευφραίνονται. Επέθανε δε και ο πλούσιος και ετάφη με πολλήν μεγαλοπρέπειαν. Η ψυχή του όμως
κατέβηκε στον Αδην. 23 Και στον Αδην όπου εβασανίζετο, εσήκωσε τα μάτια του και βλέπει τον
Αβραάμ από μακρυά και τον Λαζαρον εις τας αγκάλας του. 24 Και αυτός, που τόσην αδιαφορίαν και
σκληρότητα είχε δείξει, όταν ζούσε εις την γην, εφώναξε τώρα και είπε· Πατερ Αβραάμ, σπλαγχνίσου
με και στείλε τον Λαζαρον να βρέξη την άκρη από το δάκτυλο του στο νερό και να δροσίση την
γλώσσαν μου, διότι πονώ φοβερά μέσα εις την βασανιστικήν αυτήν φλόγα του Αδου. 25 Είπε δε ο
Αβραάμ· Τεκνον, θυμήσου, ότι συ απήλαυσες με το παραπάνω τα αγαθά σου εις την ζωήν σου και ο
Λαζαρος ομοίως εδοκίμασε τα κακά της φτώχειας και της ασθενείας. Τωρα δε αυτός εδώ παρηγορείται
και ευφραίνετε δια την υπομονήν, που έδειξε στον καιρόν της θλίψεώς του, συ δε κατά λόγον
δικαιοσύνης βασανίζεσαι δια την φιλαυτίαν σου και την σκληρότητα της καρδίας σου. 26 Και επί πλέον
μεταξύ του τόπου, που είμεθα ημείς, και του τόπου που είσθε σεις, έχει στηριχθή μέγα και
ανυπέρβλητον χάσμα, ώστε εκείνοι που θέλουν να περάσουν από εδώ εις σας να μη ημπορούν ούτε και
αυτοί, που είναι στο μέρος σας να μην ημπορούν να περάσουν προς ημάς. 27 Είπε δε ο πλούσιος· Τοτε
σε παρακαλώ, πάτερ, να στείλης τον Λαζαρον στο πατρικό μου σπίτι, 28 διότι έχω εκεί πέντε αδελφούς,
στείλε τον να τους διαβεβαιώση δι' αυτά που συμβαίνουν εδώ, ώστε να μη καταντήσουν και αυτοί στον
τόπον τούτον των βασάνων. 29 Λεγει εις αυτόν ο Αβραάμ· Εχουν τον Μωϋσέα και τους προφήτας· ας
ακούσουν αυτών τας μαρτυρίας. 30 Εκείνος δε είπε· όχι, πάτερ Αβραάμ, δεν θα προσέξουν την
μαρτυρίαν του Μωϋσέως και των προφητών. Αλλά εάν κανείς από τους πεθαμένους υπάγη προς
αυτούς, θα μετανοήσουν. 31 Είπε δε εις αυτόν ο Αβραάμ· εάν δεν ακούσουν τον Μωϋσέα και τους
προφήτας, δεν θα πεισθούν και αν ακόμη αναστηθή κάποιος εκ νεκρών”. (Οταν λείπη η καλή διάθεσις
ούτε και το μεγαλύτερον θαύμα ημπορεί να οδηγήση εις πίστιν και μετάνοιαν).
GOSPEL
The Gospel of Luke 16:19-31
The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted
sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be
fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor
man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried;
and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his
bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of
his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son,
remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things;
but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great
chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none
may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I
have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But
Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father
Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not
hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.' ".

Πιστεύω εἰς ἕνα Θεόν, Πατέρα, Παντοκράτορα, ποιητὴν οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς, ὁρατῶν τε πάντων καὶ ἀοράτων. Καὶ

ἡμῶν ἐπὶ Ποντίου Πιλάτου, καὶ παθόντα καὶ ταφέντα. Καὶ ἀναστάντα τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρα κατὰ τὰς Γραφάς. Καὶ
ἀνελθόντα εἰς τοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ καθεζόμενον ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Πατρός. Καὶ πάλιν ἐρχόμενον μετὰ δόξης κρῖναι
ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς, οὗ τῆς βασιλείας οὐκ ἔσται τέλος. Καὶ εἰς τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον, τὸ Κύριον, τὸ ζωοποιόν, τὸ
ἐκ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκπορευόμενον, τὸ σὺν Πατρὶ καὶ Υἱῷ συμπροσκυνούμενον καὶ συνδοξαζόμενον, τὸ λαλῆσαν διὰ
τῶν προφητῶν. Εἰς μίαν, Ἁγίαν, Καθολικὴν καὶ Ἀποστολικὴν Ἐκκλησίαν. Ὁμολογῶ ἓν βάπτισμα εἰς ἄφεσιν
ἁμαρτιῶν. Προσδοκῶ ἀνάστασιν νεκρῶν. Καὶ ζωὴν τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος. Ἀμήν.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in
one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true
God of true God, begotten not created, of one essence with the Father through Whom all things were made. Who
for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin
Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And He rose on
the third day, according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge the living and dead. His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy
Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is
worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess
one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against
us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Πιστεύω, Κύριε, και ομολογώ ότι συ ει αληθώς ο Χριστός, ο Υιός του Θεού του ζώντος, ο ελθών εις τον κόσμον

Εν ταις λαμπρότησι των αγίων σου, πως εισελεύσομαι ο ανάξιος; Εάν γαρ τολμήσω συνεισελθείν εις τον
νυμφώνα, ο χιτών με ελέγχει. Ότι ουκ έστι του γάμου, και δέσμιος εκβαλούμαι υπό των Αγγέλων, καθάρισον,
Κύριε, τον ρύπον της ψυχής μου, και σώσον με, ως φιλάνθρωπος.
Δέσποτα φιλάνθρωπε, Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ο Θεός μου, μη εις κρίμα μοι γένοιτο τα Άγια ταύτα, δια το ανάξιον
είναι με, αλλ’ εις κάθαρσιν και αγιασμόν ψυχής τε και σώματος, και εις αρραβώνα μελλούσης ζωής και

The Holy Martyrs Acindynus, Pegasius, Aphtonius, Elpidephorus and
Anempodistus - November 2
These Martyrs contested in Persia about the year 330, in the reign of Sapor
(Shapur) II, King of Persia (325-379). Acindynus, Pegasius, and
Anempodistus, Persian Christians, confessed Christ before the King, and
were put to many torments. Aphthonius and Elpidephorus, drawn to the Faith
of Christ through the Martyrs, were beheaded with another 7,000. Saints
Acindynus, Pegasius, and Anempodistus were at last burned to death. Two
churches were dedicated in their honour in Constantinople. As is often the case in church
hymns, there is a play on the meanings of the Saints' names here. Acindynus means
"unimperilled"; Pegasius is derived from pegazo--"to gush forth"; Aphthonius is derived from
aphthonos-"abundant"; Elpidephorus means "hope-bearing"; Anempodistus means
"unhindered." These are all Greek translations of their Persian names.

Ήταν όλοι αξιωματούχοι του Πέρση βασιλιά Σαπώρ του Β'. Το 330 μ.Χ., επειδή,

Αφθόνιο. Έπειτα, απευθυνόμενος στον Ελπιδηφόρο, του είπε να φανεί λογικός, σαν
εγγράμματος που ήταν και μπορούσε να διακρίνει το ψέμα από την αλήθεια. Ο
Ελπιδοφόρος του αποκρίθηκε ότι γι' αυτό ακριβώς πιστεύει στο Χριστό, διότι Αυτός
είναι «η οδός και η αλήθεια και η ζωή» (Ευαγγέλιο Ιωάννου, ιδ' 6). Δηλαδή ο σωστός
δρόμος, που οδηγεί στην απόλυτη αλήθεια και στην πραγματική και πηγαία ζωή, που
αξίζει κανείς να πεθάνει γι' αυτή. Η απάντηση του Ελπιδοφόρου εξαγρίωσε τον Σαπώρ
και αμέσως τον αποκεφάλισε. Οι θυσίες αυτές ενθάρρυναν ακόμα περισσότερο τους
υπόλοιπους, και έμειναν ακλόνητοι στην πίστη τους. Τότε ο Σαπώρ διέταξε να τους
ρίξουν μέσα σε αναμμένο καμίνι. Έτσι, μαρτυρικά και ένδοξα, παρέδωσαν
όλοι τη μακάρια ψυχή τους στο ζωοδότη Χριστό.
Paul the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople - November 6
Saint Paul was from Thessalonica. He became the secretary of Alexander,
Patriarch of Constantinople (see Aug. 30), a deacon, and then the successor of
Saint Alexander in about 337. Because of his virtue, his eloquence in teaching,

and his zeal for Orthodoxy, the Arians hated and feared him. When the Arian Emperor
Constantius, who was in Antioch, learned of Paul's election, he exiled Paul and proclaimed the
Arian Eusebius Patriarch. Saint Paul went to Rome, where he found Saint Athanasius the Great
also in exile. Provided with letters by Pope Julius, Paul returned to Constantinople, and after the
death of Eusebius in 342, ascended again his rightful throne; the Arians meanwhile elected
Macedonius, because he rejected the Son's con-substantiality with the Father (and the divinity of
the Holy Spirit besides). When Constantius, yet at Antioch, learned of Paul's return, he sent
troops to Constantinople to drive Paul out. The Saint returned to Rome, where Saint Athanasius
also was again in exile. Constans, Emperor of the West, Constantius' brother, but Orthodox,
wrote to Constantius that if Athanasius and Paul were not allowed to return to their sees, he
would come with troops to restore them him-self. So Paul again returned to his throne. After the
death of Constans, however, Constantius had Paul deposed. Because of the love of the people for
Saint Paul, Philip the Prefect, who was sent for him, was compelled to arrest him secretly to
avoid a sedition. Paul was banished to Cucusus, on the borders of Cilicia and Armenia; a town
through which his most illustrious successor, Saint John Chrysostom would also pass on his way
to Comana in his last exile. In Cucusus, about the year 350, as Saint Paul was celebrating the
Divine Liturgy in the little house where he was a prisoner, the Arians strangled him with his own
omophorion, so much did they fear him even in exile. His holy relics were brought back to
Constantinople with honour by the Emperor Theodosius the Great.

Κατά την Άγια Γραφή οι άγγελοι στέλνονται από το Θεό με μορφή ορατή (οι
άγγελοι είναι αόρατα αγαθά πνεύματα κοντά στο, Θεό) σε σπουδαίες
ιστορικές περιστάσεις, που πρόκειται να εκδηλωθεί ή να εκτελεσθεί κάποια
μεγάλη θεία θέληση.
Τη σχέση, τώρα, που έχουν οι άγγελοι με το Θεό και τους ανθρώπους,
καθώς και την αποστολή τους, βλέπουμε επίσης μέσα στην Αγία Γραφή. Και
ιδιαίτερα, στους Ψαλμούς 33, στίχ. 8 και 90, στίχ. 10-12, στη δε Καινή
Διαθήκη, Ματθ. ιη' στίχ. 10, καθώς επίσης και στην προς Εβραίους επιστολή, κεφ. α' στίχ. 14,
όπου ο συγγραφέας αναφωνεί: «οὐχὶ πάντες εἰσὶ λειτουργικὰ πνεύματα εἰς διακονίαν
ἀποστελλόμενα διὰ τοὺς μέλλοντας κληρονομεῖν σωτηρίαν;». Δηλαδή, δεν είναι όλοι οι άγγελοι
πνεύματα υπηρετικά, τα όποια ενεργούν όχι από δική τους πρωτοβουλία, αλλά αποστέλλονται
από το Θεό για να υπηρετήσουν εκείνους που μέλλουν να κληρονομήσουν την αιώνια ζωή;
Επικεφαλής των αγγελικών δυνάμεων είναι οι αρχάγγελοι Μιχαήλ και Γαβριήλ. Τον Μιχαήλ
συναντάμε στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. π.χ. όταν ο Αβραάμ μέλλει να θυσιάσει τον Ισαάκ, στον Ιησού
του Ναυή, στον Ηλία, στον Λώτ, για να τον σώσει όταν ο Θεός αποφάσισε να καταστρέψει τα
Γόμορα, στον Πατριάρχη Ιακώβ, στον μάντη Βαρλαάμ και άλλου. Επίσης ο Μιχαήλ, ήταν αυτός
που οδήγησε το λαό του Ισραήλ στη φυγή από την Αίγυπτο. Τον Γαβριήλ συναντάμε στην Καινή
Διαθήκη, όπως στον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου και άλλου. Στην μνήμη, λοιπόν, των αποστολών
και του έργου πού επιτελούν οι άγγελοι, η Εκκλησία μας όρισε τη γιορτή της 8ης Νοεμβρίου.

Celebrated throughout Greece on October
28th each year, Oxi day commemorates the
answer of the Greek dictator (since August 4,
1936), Ioannis Metaxas, to the Italian
ultimatum which asked Greece to allow Italian
forces to use the land of Greece for military
operations or otherwise face war.
This ultimatum, which was presented to
Metaxas by the Italian ambassador in Greece,
Grachi, on the dawn (04:00) of October 28,
1940, after a party in the Italian embassy in
Athens, was answered with a single word: oxi!
(Ochi!)
The attack began at 05:30. The days that
followed, fierce battles along the mountain
range of Pindus broke out, after Italy invaded
Greece through Albania. The Greek people
responded with decisiveness and rushed to
voluntarily enlist in the army. Thanks to the
spirit of heroism that characterised the Greek
peasants of the mountainous regions of Epirus
(who were carrying military supplies on their
backs to the front through mountain paths)
and the self sacrifice of the Greek soldiers, the
Italian attack was pushed back in a few days.
What might have seemed to Mussolini as an
easy operation soon turned out to be a
nightmare, when Greece counter-attacked and
forced the Italian army back deep into Albania
(14 November 1940- 6 January 1941). The
Italian attempts to break the Greek lines, until
March 1941, were repulsed, with terrible
losses from both sides. What made the Greek
victory even more remarkable, is the technical
and material superiority of the Italian military
machine at the time. These events led Winston
Churchill to say that "the world will no longer
say that Greeks fight as heroes, but heroes
fight as Greeks".
Hitler had to intervene to save his ally, and by
April 1941, a well coordinated attack of the
Nazi army had commenced. This move
however cost the Nazis, since military forces
had to be occupied in Greece instead of the
eastern front (Russia) where war was going to
break out soon. Such a delay was costly for
Hitler.
Many folk songs have been written about those
days and until today, military parades are held
each year on this day and school children also
parade in their home towns. The balconies of
the houses are decorated with Greek flags and
it is also a public holiday.

USS SLATER & GREEK COMMUNITY TO COMMEMORATE OXI DAY
On October 28th, millions around the world will commemorate OXI (pronounced ō-hē) Day,
a day honoring Greece’s courageous resistance during World War II. The day will be
remembered on board the USS SLATER in Albany, New York, with a brief program
starting at 9:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
In 1940, Mussolini delivered an ultimatum to Greece’s Prime Minister demanding the entry
of the Italian army into Greece and the Italian occupation of Greek territory. The Prime
Minister refused. His response was quickly echoed by the people of Athens as “Oxi,”
meaning “No.”
The Italian forces entered Greece via the steep Pindos Mountains where they met fierce and
unexpected resistance. Hitler was forced to delay his invasion of Russia and extend his
campaign into the winter in order to subdue the Greeks, where the Italians had failed. This
fatal diversion proved to be a great advantage for the Allies. Winston Churchill paid homage
to the Greek resistance by claiming, “…until now we would say that the Greeks fight like
heroes. From now on we will say that heroes fight like Greeks.”
The USS SLATER has a special connection to the people of Greece. In 1951, the ship, along
with three sister ships, was transferred to the Hellenic Navy and renamed AETOS
(pronounced ī-tōs), meaning “eagle.” It completed hundreds of reconnaissance missions and
training cruises for naval cadets over a forty-year career. After it was decommissioned in
1991, a group of destroyer escort sailors negotiated the SLATER’s return to the United States
as a museum ship in 1993.
The USS SLATER is located at the Hudson River in downtown Albany. Public hours are
Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through November 30. The ship will be closed

invincible Axis Forces their first defeat in
WWII. Hitler had previously soundly defeated France and routed the army of Great Britain,
two of the world’s great powers. Life Magazine and publications around the world featured
Greece on their covers.

Greek Women Play Prominent Role in First Significant Civilian Counter-Attack Seen
by German Forces
Women and old men en masse gathered farm implements and whatever weapons they could
find to attack Hitler’s elite paratroopers invading Crete. Over four thousand German soldiers
lost their lives on Crete but so did 1,000 women. Cretan military personnel had gone to
mainland Greece to fight the Axis Forces.
Greek Archbishop’s Document Only One to Protest Holocaust Effort during Nazi
Occupation
Only the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Damaskinos, among all top religious leaders
in occupied countries publically challenged in writing the occupying Nazis’ Holocaust plans,
according to the Raoul Wallenberg Foundation. The Archbishop showed great courage in his
response to the threat of death by Nazi firing squad. He told the Nazis that Greek clerics are
not shot, but hanged, and he requested that they respect this custom. Time Magazine featured

Ο ΤΟΡΠΙΛΙΣΜΟΣ ΤΗΣ «ΕΛΛΗΣ»
Στις αρχές Αυγούστου 1940 η διοικούσα επιτροπή του Ιερού Ιδρύματος Ευαγγελιστρίας Τήνου
ζητούσε με επιστολή της προς το Υπουργείο Ναυτικών, την αποστολή πολεμικού πλοίου στο νησί
ώστε να λαμπρύνει με την παρουσία του τις εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις προς τιμή της Παναγίας.
Το υπουργείο ανταποκρίθηκε θετικά και έστειλε το καταδρομικό «ΕΛΛΗ», παρά τις τεκμηριωμένες
αντιρρήσεις του Αρχηγού Στόλου Επ. Καββαδία.
Ο
έμπειρος
αξιωματικός
ζητούσε
τη
συγκέντρωση όλων των πλοίων στον ναύσταθμο
Σαλαμίνας προκειμένου να προστατευτούν από
την ολοένα αυξανόμενη ιταλική επιθετικότητα.
Ανήμερα της 15ης Αυγούστου το ελληνικό
καταδρομικό αγκυροβόλησε 550 μέτρα από τον
μεσημβρινό λιμενοβραχίονα της Τήνου. Η
ατμόσφαιρα στο σημαιοστολισμένο πλοίο ήταν
πανηγυρική.

Χατζόπουλος, εμφανώς ανήσυχος, διέταξε τη
λήψη όλων των απαιτούμενων μέτρων
ασφαλείας: τήρηση στεγανών εν πλω, ο λέβητας
σε πλήρη πίεση και τα αντιαεροπορικά πυροβόλα
σε ετοιμότητα.
Ωστόσο η επίθεση δεν θα ερχόταν από τον αέρα, αλλά από τον βυθό. Κατά τις 07.00 εμφανίστηκε ένα
ιταλικό αναγνωριστικό αεροπλάνο το οποίο, αφού διέγραψε δύο κύκλους πάνω από το λιμάνι,
αποχώρησε. Κανείς δεν έδωσε ιδιαίτερη σημασία στο γεγονός. Oι Ιταλοί συνήθιζαν αυτού του είδους
τις «επιδείξεις». Επρόκειτο όμως για αναγνώριση εν όψει επικείμενης υποβρυχιακής επίθεσης.
Στις 08.25 οι φωνές του αρχικελευστή Κατσαϊτη έσκισαν τον αέρα: «Τορπίλη δεξιά, τορπίλη δεξιά».
Η φωνή του διακόπηκε από τον πάταγο μιας τρομακτικής έκρηξης η οποία ανασήκωσε το πλοίο από
την επιφάνεια σαν παιδικό παιχνίδι! Πολλοί άνδρες έπεσαν στη θάλασσα. Για λίγα λεπτά κανείς δεν
γνώριζε τι είχε συμβεί. Κομμάτια σάρκας, φωτιά, καπνοί και βογγητά πληγωμένων συνέθεταν ένα
σκηνικό κόλασης.
Ο κυβερνήτης ανέκτησε γρήγορα την ψυχραιμία του και έδωσε διαταγές περίθαλψης των τραυματιών,
διάσωσης των ανδρών που βρίσκονταν στη θάλασσα και ρυμούλκησης του πλοίου.
Εν τω μεταξύ άλλες δύο τορπίλες εξερράγησαν πάνω στον λιμενοβραχίονα, έχοντας προφανώς ως
στόχο τα επιβατηγά που βρίσκονταν μέσα στο λιμάνι, κατάφορτα με προσκυνητές.
Το επιβατηγό ατμόπλοιο «ΕΣΠΕΡΟΣ» με κυβερνήτη τον ηρωικό Γεράσιμο Φωκά έσπευσε σε
βοήθεια του πληγωμένου καταδρομικού.
Ωστόσο, μετά από δύο ώρες εναγώνιων προσπαθειών το «ΕΛΛΗ» άρχιζε να βυθίζεται, παρασύροντας

στον υγρό του τάφο και εννέα μέλη του πληρώματος.
Ο κυβερνήτης Χατζόπουλος θέλησε να μοιραστεί την τύχη του
πλοίου του, ωστόσο οι αξιωματικοί του τον πήραν «σηκωτό» και
επιβιβάστηκαν σε μια σωστική λέμβο.
Μόλις ο Μεταξάς πληροφορήθηκε το συμβάν, αναζήτησε τους
αξιωματικούς
του
πλοίου.
Αφού πληροφορήθηκε τα τεκταινόμενα διέταξε να γίνει η δοξολογία
και η περιφορά της εικόνας σα να μη συνέβη τίποτα.
Επίσης απαγόρευσε την έκφραση της παραμικρής υπόνοιας σχετικά
με την εθνικότητα του επιτιθέμενου υποβρυχίου.
Οι Έλληνες εμπειρογνώμονες διαπίστωσαν εύκολα την ιταλική
ταυτότητα του υποβρυχίου από τους σειριακούς αριθμούς στα
κομμάτια των τορπιλών .
Μετά τον πόλεμο διαπιστώθηκε ότι επρόκειτο για το Delfino με κυβερνήτη τον Τζιουζέπε Αϊκάρντι.
Η κυβέρνηση όμως απέφυγε να ανακοινώσει οτιδήποτε για την εθνικότητά του και προσπάθησε ως
την τελευταία στιγμή να αποφύγει κάθε ενέργεια που θα μπορούσε να ερμηνευθεί ως πρόκληση.
Παράλληλα όμως, διέταξε όλους τους στρατιωτικούς σχηματισμούς να προετοιμαστούν με την
ύψιστη διακριτικότητα για την επερχόμενη σύγκρουση, καθώς ήταν φανερό ότι η φασιστική Ιταλία
είχε δώσει τον λόγο στα όπλα.
Η νέμεσις πάντως για την άνανδρη ιταλική ενέργεια ήλθε σχεδόν τρία χρόνια αργότερα.
Στις 23 Μαρτίου 1943 και ενώ το υποβρύχιο Delfino επιχειρούσε στον Τάραντα στη Νότια Ιταλία,
βυθίστηκε παρασύροντας μαζί του και τα 28 μέλη του πληρώματος, που είχαν συμμετάσχει στον
τορπιλισμό της «ΕΛΛΗΣ».
Ο μόνος επιζών ήταν ο πρώην κυβερνήτης Αικάρντι, ο οποίος, αμέσως μετά τον τορπιλισμό του
ελληνικού πλοίου, είχε παραδώσει τη διοίκηση στον Μάριο Βιολάντε.
Πάντως ο Αικάρντι, ακόμη και μετά τον πόλεμο δήλωνε αμετανόητος για την ενέργειά του, η οποία
ήταν έξω από το δίκαιο του πολέμου, εφόσον τορπίλισε πλοίο ουδέτερης χώρας.
Το 1960 δήλωσε στο περιοδικό Tempo: «Δεν είχα ούτε δισταγμό ούτε ταλάντευση. Είχα συνείδηση
ότι εκτελώ μια στρατιωτική διαταγή, η οποία δεν έδινε περιθώρια για αμφιβολίες (σ.σ. η διαταγή είχε
δοθεί από τον υπερφίαλο Ιταλό διοικητή της Δωδεκανήσου Ντε Βέκι).
Σήμερα τρέφω για την Ελλάδα αισθήματα συμπάθειας και θαυμασμού… Αλλά, τότε, πέρα από κάθε
αμφιβολία βρισκόμασταν σε αντίθετα στρατόπεδα (σ.σ. η Ελλάδα όμως τότε ήταν ακόμη ουδέτερη
χώρα).
Από ότι ήξερα η διαταγή που είχα πάρει μπορούσε να αποτελεί το προοίμιο για μια άμεση, κανονική
είσοδο στον πόλεμο».
