Let the heavens rejoice and the earth
be glad, for the Lord by His Might, has
created a Dominion. He has conquered death by death, and become the
first-born of the dead. He has delivered us from the depths of Hades, and

FATHERS of the CHURCH
Let us hearken, as many as are to receive Christ: for it is possible to receive Him even
now. Let us hearken, and emulate, and receive Him with as great zeal; for indeed, when
you receive a poor man who is hungry and naked, you have received and cherished
Him.
St. John Chrysostom, Homily 26 on Matthew 8
4th Century
The things that have come into being have received from the Creator their proper place,
their beginning and, in some cases, their end. But there is no boundary to virtue. The
psalmist says, 'I have seen the end the end of all perfection, but Your commandment is
very broad and is without limit' (Ps. 118:96). Now if it is true...that love never fails (I
Cor. 13:8),... then love has no boundary, and both in the present age and in the future
age we will never cease to progress in it, as we add light to light.
St. John Climacus, Ladder of Divine Ascent, Step 26: On Discernment; Paulist Press
pgs. 250-251
6th century
...every tree is known by its own fruit. So also is love known by its own fruit and the
love of which Christianity speaks is known by its own fruit - revealing that it has in
itself the truth of the eternal. All other love, whether humanly speaking it withers early
and is altered or lovingly preserves itself for a round of time - such love is still transient; it merely blossoms. This is precisely its weakness and tragedy, whether it blossoms for an hour or for seventy years - it merely blossoms; but Christian love is eternal.
Soren Kierkegaard, Works of Love, Chapter 1; Harper Torchbooks pg. 25
19th century
If your tongue is used to chattering, your heart will remain dim and foreign to
the luminous intuitions of the Holy Spirit. But if your mouth is silent, your heart
will ever be aflame with the spirit…hush your tongue that your heart may speak,
and hush your heart that God may speak.
St. John of Dalyatha
Homily on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

θαύματα; Mήπως έχουν όλοι χαρίσματα θεραπειών;
13Eίπε κατόπιν ο Iησούς

ΤΗΕ EPISTLE
THE GOSPEL
St. Paul's First Letter to the
Corinthians 12:27-31; 13:1-8
Matthew 8:5-13
At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum,
a centurion came forward to him,
beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my
servant is lying paralyzed at home, in
terrible distress." And he said to him, "I
will come and heal him." But the centurion
answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to
have you come under my roof; but only
say the word, and my servant will be
healed. For I am a man under authority,
with soldiers under me; and I say to one,
'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,'
and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,'
and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he
marveled, and said to those who followed
him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel
have I found such faith. I tell you, many
will come from east and west and sit at
table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in
the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of
the kingdom will be thrown into the outer
darkness; there men will weep and gnash
their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus
said, "Go; be it done for you as you have
believed." And the
servant was healed at
that very moment.
Brethren, you are the body of Christ and
individually members of it. And God has
appointed in the church first apostles,
second prophets, third teachers, then
workers of miracles, then healers, helpers,
administrators, speakers in various kinds
of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all
prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work
miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing?
Do all speak with tongues? Do all
interpret? But earnestly desire the higher
gifts. And I will show you a still more
excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of
men and of angels, but have not love, I am
a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if
I have prophetic powers, and understand
all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I
have all faith, so as to remove mountains,
but have not love, I am nothing. If I give
away all I have, and if I deliver my body to
be burned, but have not love, I gain
nothing.
Love is patient and kind; love is not
jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or
rude.
Love does not insist on its own way; it
is not irritable or resentful; it does not
rejoice at wrong but rejoices in the right.
Love bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things. Love
never ends.

Prayer for a Sick Person
Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our
Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me Your servant from all physical
and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of
body and spirit, and recovery of health. Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each
other that we may be healed. I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete
health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

ATTENTION!!!
Holy Communion is indeed the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which sanctifies the faithful
becoming for them provision for the eternal life. However, for those persons who are not prepared it
becomes “fire which burneth the unworthy” (Saint John Chrysostom).
St. John Chrysostom’s Homily 20 on WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION:
“As it is not to be imagined that the fornicator and the blasphemer can partake of the sacred Table, so it is impossible that he who has an enemy, and bears malice, can enjoy Holy Communion. […] I forewarn, and testify, and
proclaim this with a voice that all may hear! ‘Let no one who has an enemy draw near the sacred Table, or receive
the Lord’s Body! Let no one who draws near have an enemy! Do you have an enemy? Do not approach! Do you
wish to draw near? Be reconciled, and then draw near, and only then touch the Holy Gifts!”
Concerning Frequent Communion by St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite:
We therefore ask all Orthodox Christians to prepare with Confession and to acquire permission from their Spiritual Father prior to receiving Holy Communion.
Moreover, we ask the Faithful to prepare with the required fast as prescribed by the Holy Fathers of the Church.
We further ask women not to wear lipstick when receiving Holy Communion or when venerating the Sacred
Icons.

“So that whosoever may be eating this bread or drinking the cup of the Lord unworthily shall be guilty of the
body and of the blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and thus let him eat of the bread and let
him drink of the cup. For the one who eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgement to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. For this reason, many are weak and sick among you, and a considerable number are dying (falling asleep”.”

Sts Cosmas and Damian
the Holy Unmercenaries
July 1
Sts. Cosmas and Damian were born in Rome to pious parents, who raised
their sons to lead a strict and pure life. They grew to become physicians
and God granted them the gift of healing. Because of their goodness and
kindness, they were able to bring many to believe in Christ. They told the
sick that they were not able to heal without the power and grace of God.
These young men lived simply and gently, asking nothing for themselves. This is why they were called
Unmercenaries instead of their own names. When they would pray to God to help the people get well,
the Saints always explained that they would not accept anything for helping the ill and hurt. They only
asked that those that were healed would believe in Jesus. They felt that it was only through His Holy
Name could the people become well again.
Sts. Cosmas and Damian lived during the terrible reign of Carinus (283-284 AD). The Roman
authorities were concerned that the Sts. spiritual influence on the people was drawing too much attention. The Christians who learned that soldiers were searching for St. Cosmas and Damian, convinced
them to hide until it was safe. Unfortunately, because the soldiers could not find them, they chose to
arrest others and imprison them. This greatly saddened St. Cosmas and Damian, so they revealed
themselves and asked that the other Christians be released.
The Saints were put on trial. When they were brought before the Roman Emperor and the
judge, St. Cosmas and Damian refused to deny Christ and refused to offer sacrifices to the idol gods of
the Romans. They proclaimed, “"We have done evil to no one, we are not involved with the magic or
sorcery of which you accuse us. We treat the infirm by the power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
and we take no payment for rendering aid to the sick, because our Lord commanded His disciples,
‘Freely have you received, freely give’" (Matt 10: 8).
The Emperor continued to demand their obedience to him. At this point, God struck Carinus
blind! The Holy brothers prayed to God and through their prayers, God gave the Emperor his sight
once more. Many who saw, believed in the God of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, including the Emperor
and set them free to continue to heal the sick.
Sadly, the Romans were not the ones to end the lives of the Saintly Unmercenary brothers! They died,
instead at the hands of an old physician who had deemed them his most beloved students. His envy of
these brothers caused him to go with him to gather herbal to use as medicines. The brothers followed
him and this wicked and envious man murdered them and through their bodies into the river. In this
way, Sts. Cosmas and Damian ended their lives as martyrs.

SAINTS AND FEASTS
Andrew of Crete
Author of the Great CanonJuly 4
Kyriaki the Great
Martyr-July 7
Saint Kyriake was the daughter of
Christian parents, Dorotheus and Eusebia. She was given her name because
she was born on Sunday, the day of the
Lord (in Greek, Kyriake). She contested
in Nicomedia during the reign of Diocletian, in the year 300. After many
bitter torments she was condemned to
suffer beheading, but being granted time to pray first, she
made her prayer and gave up her holy soul in peace.
Saint Andrew was from Damascus; his
parents' names were George and
Gregoria. He became a cleric and secretary of Theodore and Patriarch of Jerusalem; from this, he is called "the Jerusalemite." He was present at the Sixth
Ecumenical Council in Constantinople,
which was convoked in 680 during the reign of Emperor Constantine IV (668-685). He became deacon of the Great church
in Constantinople, that is, the Church of the Holy Wisdom of
God, then Archbishop of Crete. He reposed in 720 or 723.
Beside his other sacred writings, he also composed various
hymns, among which is the famous Great Canon, which is
chanted during Great Lent (see the Thursday of the Fifth Ήταν κόρη του Δωροθέου και της Εύσεβίας.
Week of the Fast).
Sisoes the Great-July 6
This Saint, great and renowned
among the ascetics of Egypt, lived
in the fourth century in Scete of
Nitria. After the death of Saint Anthony the Great, he left Scete to live
in Saint Anthony's cave; he said of
this, "Thus in the cave of a lion, a
fox makes his dwelling." When
Sisoes was at the end of his long life
of labours, as the Fathers were gathered about him, his
face began to shine, and he said, "Behold, Abba Anthony is come"; then, "Behold, the choir of the Prophets
is come"; his face shone yet more bright, and he said,
"Behold, the choir of the Apostles is come." The light of
his countenance increased, and he seemed to be talking
with someone. The Fathers asked him of this; in his
humility, he said he was asking the Angels for time to
repent. Finally his face became as bright as the sun, so
that the Fathers were filled with fear. He said, "Behold,
the Lord is come, and He says, 'Bring Me the vessel of
the desert,'" and as he gave up his soul into the hands of
God, there was as it were a flash of lightning, and the
whole dwelling was filled with a sweet fragrance.

SPOTLIGHT
Eid al Fitr!

Θεία Λειτουργία;
είναι αυτή;

Mission Statement and Philosophy
At St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Preschool, our goal is to help the children in our care grow physically, socially,
emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually in the Greek Orthodox faith. We use a positive developmental program
that provides a motivating and nurturing, educational, hands on environment where students, teachers, parents, and
the community are partners in the educational process.
At St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Preschool, we believe these early years are the building blocks of a child’s success for the future. Our curriculum responds to the needs of the children in their particular stages of development.
Our environment provides hands on activity and allows children to explore creatively the world around them. We
provide a variety of experiences that help the child develop a sense of independence, self-confidence, and selfdiscipline.

PARENTING
PARENTS BEWARE!
Social Networking Teens and Increased Substance Abuse Risk
By: CASA
American teens ages 12-17 who in a typical day spend any time on social networking sites are at increased risk of smoking,
drinking and drug use, according to the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XVI: Teens and Parents,
the 16th annual back-to-school survey conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia
University (CASA Columbia).
For the first time this year, the survey asked 12- to 17-year olds whether they spend time on Facebook, Myspace or other social networking sites in a typical day. Seventy percent of teens report spending time on social networking sites in a typical day
compared to 30 percent of teens who say they do not. This means that 17 million 12- to 17-year olds are social networking in
a typical day.
Social Networking Teens at Increased Substance Abuse Risk
Compared to teens that spend no time on social networking sites in a typical day, teens that do are:
Five times likelier to use tobacco;
Three times likelier to use alcohol; and
Twice as likely to use marijuana.
Teen Substance Abuse Photos Rampant on Social Networking Sites
The CASA Columbia survey found that 40 percent of all teens surveyed have seen pictures on Facebook, Myspace or other
social networking sites of kids getting drunk, passed out, or using drugs. Half of teens who have seen pictures of kids drunk,
passed out, or using drugs on Facebook and other social networking sites first saw such pictures when they were 13 years of
age or younger; more than 90 percent first saw such pictures when they were 15 or younger.
Compared to teens that have never seen pictures of kids getting drunk, passed out, or using drugs on social networking sites,
teens that have seen these images are:
Three times likelier to use alcohol;
Four times likelier to use marijuana;
Four times likelier to be able to get marijuana, almost three times likelier to be able to get controlled prescription drugs without a prescription, and more than twice as likely to be able to get alcohol in a day or less; and
Much likelier to have friends and classmates who abuse illegal and prescription drugs.
Parental Perceptions Out of Touch with Reality
Eighty-seven percent of parents said they think spending time on social networking sites does not make it more likely their
child will drink alcohol; 89 percent of parents felt it would not make their child more likely to use drugs.
Cyber Bullying and Substance Abuse
The CASA Columbia survey also found that 19 percent of teens ages 12-17 (more than 4.5 million teens) report being cyber
bullied (having someone post mean or embarrassing things about them on a social networking site). Compared to teens who
are not cyber bullied, teens who have been cyber bullied are more than twice as likely to use tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
“The anything goes, free-for-all world of Internet expression and suggestive television programming that teens are exposed to
on a daily basis puts them at increased risk of substance abuse,” said Califano. “The findings in this year’s survey should
strike Facebook fear into the hearts of parents of young children and drive home the need for parents to give their children the
will and skill to keep their heads above the water of the corrupting cultural currents their children must navigate.”

Corinthians-$18.00
The community Paul founded in Corinth
gave him both joy and grief, for he was to
encounter problems there of disunity, sin,
and arrogance including the rejection of
his own apostolic authority by some of his
flock. His two epistles to the Corinthians
come straight from the heart, as he appeals
to them to live in peace, in righteousness, in generosity, and
not to resist his God-given authority. His Corinthian correspondence abides as a lasting legacy and a challenge for all
churches everywhere.
James, Peter, Jude, and John--are sometimes overshadowed by the stirring theology of the great Apostle to the Gentiles, St.
Paul. But these seven epistles are quiet
gems of instruction, encouragement, and
exhortation for all believers. Written at
various times and locations and to differing
audiences, the general epistles nevertheless
share some common themes: endurance
under persecution; living out the Faith in a hostile society;
discerning heresy by its fruits--namely, immorality and lack
of love--and resisting it, holding fast to the apostolic faith.
As Fr. Lawrence deftly shows in his commentary, all these
are timely themes from which believers today can richly
profit.

The Gospel of John
$20.00
The Gospel of John vigorously witnesses to Jesus, striving to persuade
the hearts and minds of the undecided that Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of God, and the only source of eternal life. St. John, as one of the
Twelve and a witness to Christ's
glory, sets his Gospel in a cosmic
context, revealing Christ as the eternal Light of God,
the Truth and voice of the Father, the divine Glory
shining in the midst of men.

The apostle Paul lived within a
swirl of controversy. False Christians – Judaizers – dogged his every
step, slandering his motives, denying his apostolic authority, and
seeking to overthrow his Gospel
teaching. They argued their case
loudly, and Paul knew that he must give the literary
performance of his life. The result was the Epistle to
the Romans, in which he demonstrates the truth of his
Gospel – a Gospel for all men – and thereby vindicates
his apostolic authority.
