Kalamazoo!...
If there is a party, the Cretans will find it.
My dear fellow Cretans,
During the weekend of June 5 and 6, Rema and I attended the 4th District picnic in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I feel
compelled to share the experience with all of you because,
I believe it epitomizes the spirit of our association and embraces the core values of our Cretan community in America.
Kalamazoo? Where in heaven is that, some people I
talked to wondered. What’s in Kalamazoo? Who lives there?
I confess that I also wondered what’s with Kalamazoo and
whether anyone can find it. I knew years ago there was a
song “I’ve got a gal in Kalamazoo” and after Elvis Preseley
died, his fans announced that “Elvis is alive and well and
living in Kalamazoo”. I also felt better when I learned that
there is an “international” airport there and that President
Obama was actually going to be speaking to a graduating
class at Kalamazoo High.
Turns out, it’s almost halfway between Chicago and
Detroit – a perfect location to hold the District 4 annual
picnic. We arrived early Friday afternoon and stopped to eat
at Theos & Stacys, a restaurant almost at the exit of the airport. In talking with George, the Greek restaurant owner, we
discovered that the next day they expected a large group of
Cretans for dinner, music and dancing.” They were here last
year too”, he said “and boy can they have a good time!” The
early arrivals on Friday were mostly the organizers of the
weekend events lead by 4th District Governor Niko Verikakis, 1st Vice President John Manos, and a number of chapter
presidents from District 4. We gathered at a restaurant near
the hotel, exchanged our welcomes and, knowing that the
next day we would start very early, we went to bed early.
The picnic grounds were ten minutes from the hotel on
the grounds of a beautiful state park perched on a hill overlooking the lake with a baseball field, lots of well groomed
grass areas and a covered pavilion. Rema and I arrived early
at about 11:00 am only to find out that the party had started
three hours earlier. Niko Verikaki had told me that they start
early in Kalamazoo but I did not realize just how early. A
suckling pig on the spit, a lamb, a kazani with vrasto, another with the pilafi, Niko, Kosta and Yiani giving orders and taking orders. Hundreds of visitors from Chicago, Detroit, Ohio
and Indiana were there. A contingency of our Cretan friends

from Canada arrived, headed by Toronto chapter president
Paul Papoutsakis. I was amazed to see so many of our youth
there but, more important, at their participation in the
activities and their genuine appreciation of being there with
their Cretan friends and families. There was music, dancing,
baseball games, plenty of food. The tsikoudia flowed freely
as did the exuberance of good will and genuine friendship.
And, even the afternoon rain showers did not discourage
the spirit of the participants. In the middle of all the partying, a birthday cake appeared that was enough to feed 500
people. What is this all about, I wondered as we all gathered
and congratulated and sang a happy birthday to our own
John Manos for his (40th?) birthday. What a day!
But, there was work as well. Thanks to the more than
two months of planning by Helen Ranney, John Manos,
Niko Verikaki and all the presidents of the 4th District, a
Leadership Conference was held at the hotel. The structured
setting and procedures offered everyone the opportunity
to express their views and opinions. Any issues of the PAA
and all chapters in the district were presented and discussed
in a highly spirited and constructive manner. At the end of
the conference, a summary evaluation was filled out by all
participants. The leadership Conference was a great learning
experience and offered the PAA national and the District 4
chapters the opportunity to reach out to each other. I would
like to thank everyone who helped in making the conference
the success that it was. But, my special thanks to Helen Ranney who’s tireless effort made it all possible.
In the evening we all attended the dinner at Theos and
Stacys. We weren’t hungry, but the food was plenty and the
celebration continued with Cretan music singing and dance.
Finally, near exhaustion, Rema and I left at 2 am but most
celebrants continued until early morning – I still wonder
where all that energy comes from. It must be in our Cretan
genes! And, if that was not enough, the party continued at
the picnic grounds early Sunday morning with more lamb
on the spit, pilafi, and a good assortment of Greek desserts.

Καλαμαζού...
Αν είναι γιορτή, ο Κρητικός θα την βρει.
Αγαπητοί μου Συμπατριώτες,
Κατά τη διάρκεια του Σαββατοκύριακου της 5ης και
6ης Ιουνίου, η σύζυγος μου και εγώ παρευρεθήκαμε στην
εκδρομή της 4ης περιφέρειας στο Kalamazoo, Μίτσιγκαν και
είμαι υποχρεωμένος να μοιραστώ την εμπειρία με όλους
σας επειδή, πιστεύω ότι συνοψίζει το πνεύμα της ΄Ενωσής
μας και περικλείει τις αξίες της κρητικής κοινότητάς μας στην
Αμερική
Καλαμαζού; Τι στην ευχή είναι αυτό; αναρωτήθηκαν
μερικοί άνθρωποι που μίλησα. Τι είναι στο Kalamazoo; Ποιος
ζει εκεί; Ομολογώ ότι αναρωτήθηκα και εγώ πού είναι το
Καλαμαζού; . Είχα ακούσει χρόνια πριν ένα τραγούδι «I ‘ve
got a girl in Kalamazooo» και μετά από τον θάνατο του Elvis
Presley, οι θαυμαστές του έλεγαν ότι «ο Έλβiς είναι ζωντανός
και καλά στο Kalamazoo». Αισθάνθηκα επίσης καλύτερα
όταν έμαθα ότι υπάρχει ένας «διεθνής» αερολιμένας, και
ότι ο Πρόεδρος Ομπάμα επρόκειτο να εκφωνήσει λόγο στην
αποφοιτούσα τάξη του εκεί γυμνασίου.
Όπως αποδείχθηκε, είναι σχεδόν στην μέση, ανάμεσα
στο Σικάγο και το Ντιτρόιτ - μια τέλεια περιοχή για την
εκδήλωση της 4ης περιφέρειας. Φθάσαμε νωρίς Παρασκευή
απόγευμα και σταματήσαμε για φαγητό στο Theos & Stacys,
ένα εστιατόριο σχεδόν στην έξοδο του αερολιμένα. Στην
ομιλία με το Γιώργο, τον ΄Ελληνα ιδιοκτήτη του εστιατορίου,
ανακαλύψαμε ότι η επόμενη ημέρα περίμεναν μια μεγάλη
παρέα κρητικών, για γεύμα, μουσική και χορό. « Ήταν
και πέρυσι εδώ », μας είπε ότι «και σίγουρα ξέρουν να
περνούν καλά οι Κρητικοί!» Οι πρόωρες αφίξεις την
Παρασκευή ήταν συνήθως οι διοργανωτές της εκδρομής του
Σαββατοκύριακου, ο Κυβερνήτης της 4ης περιφέρειας Νίκος
Βερυκάκης, ο 1ος Αντιπρόεδρος Γιάννης Μάνος, και μερικοί
Πρόεδροι τοπικών συλλόγων της περιοχή. Μαζευτήκαμε
σε ένα εστιατόριο κοντά στο ξενοδοχείο, καλωσορίσαμε ο
ένας τον άλλο και γνωρίζοντας το πρόγραμμα της επόμενης
μέρας και ότι θα αρχίζαμε πολύ νωρίς, πήγαμε για ύπνο
νωρίς. Η περιοχή που θα μαζευόμασταν ήταν δέκα λεπτά
από το ξενοδοχείο, στη κορυφή ενός λόφου σε ένα πάρκο
με πολύ όμορφη θέα μιας λίμνης, ένα γήπεδο μπέιζ-μπώλ,
με άφθονο γρασίδι και ένα περίπτερο. Η σύζυγός μου
και εγώ, φτάσαμε νωρίς, περίπου στις 11:00 π.μ., για να
ανακαλύψω ότι είχαν αρχίσει τρεις ώρες νωρίτερα. Ο Νίκος
Βερυκάκης μου είχε πει ότι αρχίζουν νωρίς στο Καλαμαζού
αλλά δεν ήξερα ακριβώς πόσο νωρίς. Xοιρινό στην σούβλα,
αρνί, ένα καζάνι βραστό και ένα άλλο με πιλάφι, το Νίκο,
το Κώστα και το Γιάννη να δίνουν και να εκτελούν εντολές.
Εκατοντάδες επισκέπτες από το Σικάγο, το Ντιτρόιτ, το Οχάιο
και τη Ιντιάνα ήταν εκεί. Ένα γκρούπ κρητικών φίλων μας
από τον Καναδά έφθασε, με επικεφαλή τον πρόεδρο του
συλλόγου του Τορόντο το Παυλή Παπουτσάκη. Εξεπλάγει με
το μεγάλο αριθμό συμμετοχής της νεολαίας μας, αλλά, το
σημαντικότερο ήταν η συμμετοχή τους στις δραστηριότητες
και η γνήσια εκτίμηση, του να είσαι εκεί με τους κρητικούς
φίλους και τις οικογένειές τους. Πολύ μουσική, χορός,
παιχνίδια μπέιζ-μπώλ, άφθονο φαγητό. Η τσικουδιά ήταν
άφθονη, όπως και η αίσθηση της καλής θέλησης και της
γνήσιας φιλίας. Και ούτε η απογευματινή βροχή δεν ήταν
αρκετή για αποθάρρυνει το πνεύμα των συμμετεχόντων. Στη
μέση της μέρας, ένα κέικ γενεθλίων εμφανίστηκε που ήταν
αρκετό να ταΐσει 500 ανθρώπους. Απορήσαμε, και μετά από
λίγο, μαζευτήκαμε, ευχηθήκαμε και τραγουδήσαμε τα χρόνια
πολλά στο Γιάννη Μάνο για τα (40α;!!) γενέθλια. Απλά,
καταπληκτική μέρα!
Αλλά, κάναμε και δουλειά, χάρις τον περισσότερο
από δύο μήνες λεπτομερή προγραμματισμό από τη Ελένη
Ράννεϊ, τον Γιάννη Μάνο, τον Νίκο Βερυκάκη και όλους
τους Προέδρους συλλόγων της 4ης περιφέρειας, μια
διάσκεψη ηγεσίας που έγινε στο ξενοδοχείο. Η σωστά
προγραμματισμένες διαδικασίες πρόσφεραν σε όλους την
ευκαιρία να εκφράσουν τις απόψεις τους. Όλα τα ζητήματα
της ΠΕΑ και των συλλόγων της περιφέρειας παρουσιάστηκαν
και συζητήθηκαν κατά τρόπο ιδιαίτερα εποικοδομητικό.
Στο τέλος της διάσκεψης, μια συνοπτική αξιολόγηση
αποτυπώθηκε από όλους τους συμμετέχοντες. Η διάσκεψη
ηγεσίας ήταν μια μεγάλη εμπειρία εκμάθησης και πρόσφερε
στη ΠΕΑ αλλά και στους συλλόγους της περιφέρειας την
ευκαιρία σύσφιγξης ανάμεσα μας. Θα επιθυμούσα να
ευχαριστήσω όλους όσους βοήθησαν στην διοργάνωση και
την επιτυχία τη διάσκεψης. Ειδικά, θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω
την Ελένη Ράννεϊ, για την ακούραστη προσπάθεια της που τα
έκανε όλα δυνατά.

Message from the General Secretary
It was truly a weekend that I will remember for a long, long time. I would like to thank
everyone who worked so hard to make the
4th District picnic possible. There are too
many individuals who should be recognized,
but I worry that I may forget to mention all
of them by name, so thank you to all the
chapters and to all PAA board members, to
the youth, and to all who came to a super successful weekend. I look forward to next year!
So, if you wonder where Kalamazoo is and
what’s it all about, just ask someone who attended the 4th District picnic and Leadership
Conference.
I hope you all are enjoying your summer, especially those who had the opportunity to travel
to Crete and participate in the various events
there. Congratulations to our 2nd Vice President
Nickos Kastrinakis and Maria who were married
in Hania on July 4th. Na zisete.
I thank all the PAA Chapters for their
diligence in preparing and sending in their per
capita dues. I Also want to remind you to notify
me right away: if someone pays their dues during the year so they can be counted; if any chapter of member information has changed. KPHTH
Magazines do NOT get forwarded and I do NOT
get notified by the United Stated Post Office of a change of address. It is
the chapter/member’s responsibility to let me know.
Remember, a national membership drive is currently underway. The
chapter that has increased their membership by the highest percentage
during this 2 year term (with members never signed up to your chapter
before) will be honored by the 3rd Vice President, Lefteris Dramitinos. The
Women’s chapter that has increased it’s membership the most will also be
recognized by the Women’s Executive Director, Maria Stratoudakis.
This is the time to bring new people in!
As Chair of the PAA Archives Committee, I am actively soliciting PAA
archives from around the country. With the help of Mary Vasilakis, several
sub committees have been formed. Efforts are being made to retrieve
materials from Past PAA Presidents, Past PYA Presidents, convention albums, convention minutes, and any photos or videos from any PAA or PYA
event throughout our history. I have already received boxes from several
individuals. (One contained documents of the ZEUS Chapter of Ambridge,
PA. which dissolved many years ago.) These kind of archives are priceless
and an integral part of documenting our history. There are several chapters that have dissolved and merged throughout the years and we want
to make sure they are accounted for and represented in our documentation. Please notify me of any chapters you know about that do not exist
today as well as contact information on anyone who may have ANYTHING
of significance from these chapters so that we can gather them. A special
thank you to all those who are helping and cooperating. If you would like
to be part of this committee, please let me know.
I will continue to update you all on our progress. Feel free to contact
me with any suggestions or ideas. If you have PAA “archive” material you
would like to donate (especially KPHTH magazines prior to 1965), let me
know and I will work with you to arrange for shipping.

ακόμα αναρωτιέμαι από πού προέρχεται
όλη αυτή η ενέργεια. Πρέπει να είναι στα
κρητικά γονίδιά μας! Και, εάν αυτό δεν
ήταν αρκετό, ο χορός και τα τραγούδια
συνεχίστηκαν από νωρίς τη Κυριακή πρωί
με περισσότερο αρνί στη σούβλα, πιλάφι
και μία παρέλαση από ελληνικά επιδόρπια.
Και η τσικουδιά έρεε ασταμάτητα. Ήταν
πραγματικά ένα Σαββατοκύριακο που θα το
θυμάμαι για πολλά χρόνια. Θα επιθυμούσα
να ευχαριστήσω όλους όσους εργάστηκαν
τόσο σκληρά για να την πραγματοποίηση της
εκδήλωσης. Υπάρχουν πάρα πολλά άτομα
που πρέπει να αναγνωριστούν, αλλά φοβάμαι
ότι μπορώ να ξεχάσω να αναφέρω όλα τα
ονόματα, και έτσι θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω
όλους του συλλόγους, τα μέλη του Δ.Σ. της
ΠΕΑ, τη νεολαία, και όλους που ήρθαν
και συνέβαλλαν σε ένα έξοχο και επιτυχές
Σαββατοκύριακο. Αναμένω με ανυπομονησία
τον επόμενο χρόνο!
Έτσι, εάν αναρωτιέστε που και τι είναι το
Καλαμαζού, ρωτήστε και θα σας πεί κάποιος
που παρευρέθηκε στη εκδήλωση της 4ης
περιφέρειας.

Dear Ted,
On behalf of myself and my family, I would like to extend my thanks
to the Pancretan Association for choosing to recognize my late husband,
Emmanuel (Mike), during the National Board Meeting taking place in
Cleveland, Ohio, with a plaque honoring him for his lifetime achievements
to PAA.
The Association, which preserves the culture and heritage of Crete,
had always been important to him throughout his 62-year membership,
two of which as National Pancretan President.
Mike would have been touched to receive this special honor bestowed
on him posthumously, especially at the new “Leski”, the George Varouh
Cretan Club., of which he was an integral part of the Building Committee
making our Leski a reality in Cleveland!

Leadership Conferences
in Districts
President Theodore Manousakis has
made it a priority to connect on a faceto-face level with PAA members since
he first took office a year ago. Besides
attending Youth and Adult Chapter
events across the country and holding
Board meetings in various cities, President Manousakis proposed a series of
Leadership Conferences to be held in
each District with local chapter officers

In the weeks leading up to this conference, a letter was sent to all chapter presidents asking them to share what chal-

The first of these conferences was
held on Saturday, June 5, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with officers and leaders of the 4th District, hosted by Nick
Verikakis, District Governor of the 4th
District.

Cretan Association of Toronto, Canada.

methods they have used to increase
their membership and discussed what
they felt were key elements to increasing participation of their members,
how to get the youth more involved in
chapters, and how to increase revenues for local chapters. During this
discussion, over 50 specific ideas were
shared between the chapters.

At the conclusion of the conference, each chapter was provided with
a Reference Binder that included current and historic membership information for their chapter, PAA program
information, general reference material, and copies of local, district, and
national constitutions.
The particpants’ responses were
overwhelmingly positive to the session
and all who attended felt that this
type of conference should be held
on a regular basis with the leaders of
the organization. It was important to
them to have the opportunity to meet
as a group with the national Board to
exchange views and find solutions. As
envisioned by President Manousakis, a
forum like this Leadership Conference
does indeed “solidify the bond of a
unified national fraternity”.

Synagogue
in Chania, Crete

Αnti-Semitic crimes hit the historic Etz Hayyim - or Tree of
Life synagogue in Crete. The synagogue in the town of Chania
was hit by arsonists twice in January, 2010 and police have arrested four men in connection with the crime. The Etz Hayyim
synagogue, which held more than 1,500 books and functioned
as a museum and memorial near the harbour of Chania, was
attacked on January 6 and January 16. The first fire was extinguished before causing major damage but the second caused
tens of thousands of euros in damage.
For centuries Jews have played an important role in the
city’s history, particularly during the period of Ottoman rule
beginning in 1669. The Etz Hayyim Synagogue, once the island’s
center of Jewish life, is located in the heart of Zudecca, the
former Jewish Ghetto, and was an integral part of the old Venetian port.
This is not the first time the synagogue was attacked. On a
sweltering night in June 1944, more than 2,000 years of Jewish
presence in the port city of Chania ended in the bomb-damaged synagogue. Nazis occupying the island of Crete ordered
Chania’s remaining 269 Jews into the synagogue. In the morning, they were put aboard a ship on the first leg of a journey to
the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Now, Rabbi Stavroulakis, a Greek-Jew and museum curator
returned to Chania to restore the 400-year- old synagogue as
a remembrance to those who died and their Jewish ancestors,
whose community stretches back nearly 2,000 years.
The synagogue is part of our Cretan Heritage and stands as
a legacy to our children that, above all, Cretans cherish and respect all people of faith. The Pancretan Association of America
strongly condemns all violence and considers the violence
against the synagogue in Chania appalling. At the recent PAA
Board meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, the Executive Board voted
unanimously to raise money support the reconstruction of the
synagogue. Any members interested can send donations to the
PAA Philanthropic Foundation.

of Crete
Summer
Camp
During the recent visit of His Eminence Archbishop of Crete
Irineos, dialogue was opened to support and work with the
Archdiocese of Crete Youth Camp ministries. The opportunity may become available for young Greek Americans of
Cretan descent to participate at this youth camp. We are
exploring the possibility of creating permanent funding to
financially sponsor PYA qualified members. Information
regarding the Archdiocese of Crete Youth Camp program will
be forthcoming.
In a sign of support for this ministry, several PAA members
and non-members alike have made a donation to the Archdiocese of Crete, to help the less fortunate children of Crete
participate in the camp activities. Approximately $7,500.00
has been raised and will be donated to the Archdiocese of

At the request of many PAA members, the PAA
Philanthropic Foundation is coordinating and making every effort to help raise funds for a young Cretan girl, Litsa Xilikakis. Cretans are always generous, especially when it involves the youth. Some of
you may have heard the story of Litsa; she is a cancer survivor, and we are hoping to secure enough
funds to help her obtain a titanium prosthetic leg.
We are making this one time request for Litsa Xilikakis, who, at age 12, had her leg amputated due
to illness. Now, at the age of 19, she is a candidate
for an artificial leg replacement. We have two PAA
members who work in the prosthetic limbs industry that said they will speak to their respective companies to see if we can acquire the artificial limb at
cost. The retail cost is approximately $40,000. We
are hoping to pay under $30,000, or help assist in
as much as possible towards the cost. All proceeds
of this drive will be used to pay the prosthesis providers directly. Any monetary help you can find in
your heart to contribute will be greatly appreciated. Please make contributions payable to the PAA
Foundation, earmarked for “new leg”.

Cretan Heritage

My Grandmother and I, as we do
every summer, sat side by side amidst
the cool, crisp atmosphere looking out
across the valley, indulging in the Cretan
mountainside, full of olive groves and
vineyards. It was very early; the rest
of my family was still dreaming in the
sleeping bags that were set up all over
the little farmhouse. We were on the
balcony enjoying a breakfast of fresh
bread, butter, and honey. This was the
time of day I enjoyed the most—when
I had my grandmother all to myself. I
loved letting my imagination take over
as I listened to all of her stories about
growing up in a mountain village, or
riding twenty miles on a donkey to
meet her husband-to-be, or taking care
of Australian soldiers during WWII. All
these tales were told on our little farmhouse’s balcony.
My grandmother looked far into
the distance as she began to speak:
“You know I planted all our olive
groves and vineyards by hand?” I
nodded so that she could continue,
“When I lost your Grandfather, I was
left with nothing, but I did not give
up. I wanted my children to have a
bright future. I built this balcony little
by little, and every summer I cherish it more as I admire my family
gathering, telling jokes and stories”.

She smiled at me, and I smiled back.
No words were necessary for me to
express my admiration. Knowing her
story: that her husband had passed
away and she was left alone with my
young father still to raise, and that she
still continues to persevere and rise
above adversity, pushes me to always
work hard, even when I feel like giving
up. As a result of her lessons, I have
become a strong, independent young
woman. I have even learned how to
be self sufficient on our little piece of
farmland by utilizing all the resources
we have—from our sheep to our chickens to our vegetable garden. I always
put my family first, because it is what
keeps me going. Without my amazing
parents and relatives, none of my accomplishments thus far in my short life
would be meaningful.
As we sat in silence, we were left to
ponder our own thoughts. Memories
of family and friends coming together
on the little balcony in Crete flooded
my mind. I remembered the time
when we tried to get my grandmother
to say English words and laughed
when she couldn’t even say one
because she would giggle at her own
accent. I smiled when I remembered
spending the night in sleeping bags
with my best friend on the balcony,
trying to paint pictures of princesses
with the stars. I remembered the moment my grandmother told me it was
time I learn how to cook traditional
Greek dishes—the secret to which
I have learned is to simmer it all in
love. I thought of the crystal clear blue
Mediterranean and how no other sea
could ever compare.
In my life, I know that I will work
hard and put forth the strength of
character that my grandmother’s love
has instilled in me. As a child of the
American Dream, I have had the privilege of growing up in a bicultural and
bilingual household. My perspective
formed from this great combination
of diverse life experiences and values has helped me make meaningful
contributions to various parts of my
life. The summers I spend in Greece
on my grandmother’s little farm with
my family have shaped the person
I am. I hope that one day, like my
grandmother, I will be able to build my
own balcony and cherish a whole new
generation of memories.
It is one of the utmost important
values of life to learn about your family,
your heritage, and your culture. I am
very thankful and proud for having been
given the opportunity to fully appreciate
all that being Cretan has to offer.

o Υποδηματοποιός
Η ιστορία των «Υποδημάτων», τα Στιβάνια, όπως τα αποκαλούσαν
έχει τις ρίζες της στα αρχαία χρόνια. Στον Όμηρο υπάρχουν οι πρώτες περιγραφές που αφορούν την υπόδηση των αρχαίων πολεμιστών του Κρητικού στόλου που πήρε μέρος στον Τρωικό πόλεμο. Αρχικά κατασκευάζονταν από δέρματα ταύρου, βοδιού, κατσικιού και προβάτων. Ράβονταν
στο χέρι και τοποθετούνταν από το ύψος του αστραγάλου και ως το γόνατο για την προστασία των καλαμίδων κατά την διάρκεια της μάχης.
Αργότερα μετεξελίχθηκαν στην σημερινή μορφή που γνωρίζουμε
για καθαρά πρακτικούς λόγους. Οι συνθήκες διαβίωσης που επέβαλε ο
αγροτοκτηνοτροφικός εν γένει τρόπος ζωής ανάγκαζε τους άνδρες κυρίως να περνούν το μεγαλύτερο χρόνο τους στα βουνά και στα δύσβατα
μέρη της περιοχής. Η τοπογραφία του εδάφους οι οποία απαιτούσε πλήρη προστασία των κάτω άκρων έκανε τα στιβάνια απαραίτητα τόσο σε
περίπτωση ειρήνης όσο και σε περίπτωση πολέμου.
Υπάρχουν πολύ τρόποι να και πολλές λεπτομέρειες για την κατασκευή
των στιβανιών. Αλλά ο σχεδιασμός ξεκινάει από το αν είναι Μονοκόμματα ή Δικόμματα. Συνήθως τα Δικόμματα προορίζονται για σκληρή χρήση
και συνήθως έχουν πλαστικές σόλες. Τα Μονοκόμματα κατασκευάζονται
από μοσχαρίσιο δέρμα και συνήθως φοριούνται σε επίσημες και κοινωνικές εκδηλώσεις. Άλλες λεπτομέρειες είναι το χρώμα και η ευλυγισία του
δέρματος, ο τρόπος ραφής, το ύψος και το σχέδιο.

O Γεώργιος-Ριχάρδος Πατεράκης γεννήθηκε
στην Νάπολη, της Ιταλίας αλλά μεγάλωσε στα
Χανιά της Κρήτης. Πάνω από δέκα χρόνια ήταν
κάτοικος Νέας Υόρκης, από όπου κατάγετε και
η γυναίκα του Μαρία το γένος Παπουτσάκη.
Επαναπατρίστηκε όμως, και απασχολείται
μόνιμα με μια από της παραδοσιακές τέχνες
που τείνουν να εξαφανιστούν. Σήμερα είναι
ο μοναδικός «Υποδηματοποιός» στην πόλη
των Χανίων και διατηρεί κατάστημα στην οδό
Νικιφόρου Επισκόπου 13 στην Παλιά Πόλη
(28210 40378). Ένας παλιός και έμπειρος υποδηματοποιός της Κρήτης, ο Τηλέμαχος Ξυραφάκης
από τα Παλιά Ρούματα του έμαθε την τέχνη που
από γενιά σε γενιά περνά μέσα από τους αιώνες
με σκοπό να τη διατηρήσει.
Ο ίδιος μας λέει ότι το σημαντικότερο
στοιχείο είναι το μεράκι που έχει ο κάθε
τεχνίτης για τα «Υποδήματα» που κατασκευάζει.
Παλαιότερα δεν υπήρχε χωρίο να μην έχει δυο
και τρείς «Υποδηματοποιούς» ανάλογα με τον
πληθυσμό των κατοίκων. Η
στροφή στον αστικό τρόπο ζωής
όμως έφερε την παραδοσιακή
αυτή τέχνη όπως και άλλες
να τείνει προς εξαφάνιση.
Στις μέρες μας υπάρχει μια
πολιτιστική στροφή στις
παραδόσεις μας και μια που
τα στιβάνια είναι απαραίτητο
κομμάτι της Κρητικής
Ενδυμασίας υπάρχει ζήτηση.
Όμως είναι πολύ δύσκολο να
βρει κανείς κατασκευαστές με
μεράκι που χρησιμοποιούν
παραδοσιακούς αυθεντικούς
τρόπους κατασκευής. «Θεωρώ
τον εαυτό μου πολύ τυχερό που
έτυχε να προλάβω να μάθω
την τέχνη από έναν από τους
καλύτερους και αυθεντικότερους
της Δυτικής Κρήτης».

Ypodoimata
The history of the «Ypodoimata» (traditional Cretan boots) has its
roots in ancient times. The first descriptions can be found in Homer’s
Iliad, which refers to the footwear of the ancient soldiers of the Cretan
Navy who fought in the Trojan War. Initially, these boots were made
from bull, goat and sheep leather. They were sewn by hand and worn
up to the knee in order to protect the shins throughout the battle.
Later, they developed into today’s shape as we know them to be, for
practical reasons. The living situations of the farmers and shepherds
caused the men to spend most of their time in the mountains. The
topography required full protection of the lower leg, making the boots
necessary for peace and war situations, alike.
There are many ways and different details for the making of the
stivania (boots). The designs can be either one-piece or two-pieces.
Usually, the two-piece design is for outdoor activities, and finished with
thick rubber soles. The one-piece design is made of calfskin leather
and is usually worn during official and social events. Other optional details include: different colors, the flexibility of the leather, the method
of sewing, the height and the design.
Giorgis-Richardos Paterakis was born in Naples, Italy, but was raised
in Chania, Crete. For over ten years, he was a resident of New York
with his wife, Maria Papoutsakis. He returned to Crete to pursue his
passion. Today, he is the only «Ypodoimatopoios» (boot maker) in Chania and his shop is located at Nikiforou Episkopou 13 in Palia Poli (Old
Town) (28210-40378). An older and experienced ypodoimatopoios of
Crete, Tilemahos Xirafakis, from Palia Roumata, taught him this skill
which has been handed down from generation to generation for the
past several centuries.
Giorgis believes that the most important element that every boot
maker should possess is “passion” for this craft. In the past, there were
at least two or three boot makers in every village, depending on the
population. This art, along with other rare arts, was on the verge of
disappearing as people abandoned villages to make a better life in big
cities. Today, it is difficult to find a «passionate» boot maker who still
makes original hand-made stivania. «I view myself as a very lucky individual who had the opportunity to learn this art from one of the best
and authentic boot makers of Western Crete».

Εορτάστικε η Μάχη της Κρήτη από τα
Κρητικά Σωματεία της Νέας Υόρκης
Την Κυριακή 23 Μαΐου, 2010
εορτάστικε με μεγαλοπρέπεια από
τα Κρητικά Σωματεία της ευρύτερης
περιοχής της Νέας Υόρκης η 69η
επέτειο από την Μάχη της Κρήτης. Η
εκδηλώσεις ξεκίνησαν με δοξολογία
και επιμνημόσυνη δέηση που
τελέσθηκαν στον Ιερό Ναό της Αγίας
Αικατερίνης στην Αστόρια της Νέας
Υόρκης από τον Πανοσιολογιότατο
Αρχιμανδρίτη Απόστολο Κουφαλάκη.
Η εκδήλωση μνήμης έγινε
στο Σύλλογο Κρητών «Ομόνοια»,
στο κατάμεστο «Κρητικό Σπίτι». Οι 300 και πλέον
παρευρισκόμενοι τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους τα
θύματα της Γερμανικής θηριωδίας κατά την περίοδο της
Μάχης της Κρήτης και της κατοχής. Με την παρουσία
τους τίμησαν την επέτειο και ο Πρόξενος της Ελλάδας
στην Νέα Υόρκη κ. Ευάγγελος Κυριακόπουλος ο οποίος
αναφέρθηκε τόσο στις δύσκολες στιγμές της εποχής
εκείνης αλλά και στις προκλήσεις της σημερινής εποχής
που έχει να αντιμετωπίσει η Ελλάδα, ο Στρατιωτικός
Ακόλουθος Αντισυνταγματάρχης κ. Χ. Μεσαριτζίδης, ο
Προξενικός Λιμενάρχης Πλοίαρχος κ. Ευάγγελος Τσάνζαλος,
ο Πολιτειακός Γερουσιαστής του Rhode Island κ. Λεωνίδας
Ραπτάκης, η Εκτελεστική Διευθύντρια Γυναικείων Τμημάτων
της Π.Ε.Α. κ. Μαρία Στρατουδάκη, ο Πρόεδρος της
Ομοσπονδίας Ελληνικών Σωματείων Μείζονος Νέας Υόρκης
και όλοι οι Πρόεδροι των Κρητικών Σωματείων της περιοχής.
Το πρόγραμμα παρουσίασε η Πρόεδρος της Μικτής
Εκπαιδευτικής Επιτροπής Κρητικών Σωματείων που είχε
και την ευθύνη της οργάνωσης κ. Μαρία Κουδέλλου. Ο
Δεύτερος Αντιπρόεδρος της Π.Ε.Α. κ. Νίκος Καστρινάκης
αναφέρθηκε στην Μάχη της Κρήτης ανεγνώρισε τον κ.
Κωνσταντίνο Ανυφαντάκη ο οποίος
ήταν ο μοναδικός παρών που πολέμησε
στην Ευρώπη το ναζισμό και προλόγισε
τον Καθηγητή του Πανεπιστημίου
του Maryland Δρ. Γεώργιο Σκουλάκη
ο οποίος ήταν ο κύριος Ομιλητής. Ο
Δρ. Σκουλάκης έδωσε μια μεστή και
συγκινητική ομιλία που περιείχε πολλά
άγνωστα στοιχεία για την Μάχη της
Κρήτης και της αντίστασης κατά την

διάρκεια της κατοχής. Επικεντρώθηκε,
όπως και ο ίδιος ανέφερε, κυρίως στο
τι έχουν γράψει και πει κατά καιρούς ξένοι και όχι Έλληνες
χωρίς όμως να παραλείψει και τα ιστορικά γεγονότα που
διαδραματίστηκαν την εποχή εκείνη. Η εκδήλωση έκλεισε
με ριζίτικα τραγούδια εμπνευσμένα από τα γεγονότα της
εποχής.
Η άψογα από άποψη οργάνωσης εκδήλωση τελείωσε με
πλούσιο γεύμα που απόλαυσαν οι παρευρισκόμενοι με την
συνοδεία αυθεντικής Κρητικής μουσικής.

«Το Νησί»
Σπιναλόγκα
Ανάσα στην ποιότητα στην
ποιότητα των σήριαλ της Ελληνικής
τηλεόρασης θα επιχειρήσει να
φέρει ο πολυβραβευμένος Χανιώτης
σκηνοθέτης Θοδωρής Παπαδουλάκης.
Αυτή η νέα μεγάλη παραγωγή που
άρχισε να γυρίζεται στην Σπιναλόγκα
εκτός του ότι απομακρύνεται από
τις φτηνές, πρόχειρα γυρισμένες σε
εσωτερικούς χώρους συνήθως σειρές
έρχεται να αναδείξει και να ανατρέψει.
Να αναδείξει ότι δεν έχουμε ανάγκη
από ξενόφερτα σενάρια μια που αυτά
που έχουν διαδραματιστεί στην χώρα
μας έχουν γίνει πηγή για την τέχνη και
που μάλιστα έχουν φροντίσει ξένοι
να προβάλουν με επιτυχία. Αυτή η
ανατροπή που γίνεται να ξεφύγουμε

από την κακή αντιγραφή των σεναρίων
που συνήθως έρχονται από την
Βραζιλία ή την Αμερική είναι ακόμα
σημαντικότερη.
Η σειρά «Το Νησί» είναι βασισμένο
στο ομώνυμο διεθνές best seller,
του βιβλίου της Victoria Hislop. Το
βιβλίο της Victoria Hislop «Το Νησί»
εκδόθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην Αγγλία
το 2006. ΄Εινε παγκόσμιο bestseller
με 2.000.000 πωλήσει εκ των οποίων
185.000 πραγματοποιήθηκαν στην
Ελλάδα. Μέσα σε τέσσερα χρόνια
κατάφερε να έχει εκδοθεί σε 25
χώρες και να συγκαταλέγεται μέσα
στα καλύτερα και πιο επιτυχημένα
μυθιστορήματα παγκοσμίως. Το
βιβλίο αποτυπώνει άριστα την Κρήτη
τους ανθρώπους της μα πάνω από
όλα την ψυχή τους όπως αναφέρει
ο Στέλιος Μάϊνας: «Είχα διαβάσει το
βιβλίο τns Hislop σε ένα καλοκαίρι
και μου είχε κάνει εντύπωση το πώς
ένας άνθρωπος που δεν προέρχεται
από τον τόπο μαs γνωρίζει τόσο καλά
την Κρήτη, τους ανθρώπους τnς και
τον ψυχισμό τους. Αργότερα, όταν
γνώρισα την κυρία Hislop, κατάλαβα
ότι είναι ίσως γιατί ο φιλελληνισμός
και η απόσταση από το αντικείμενο
δίνουν μια πιο καθάρια ματιά και μια
μεγαλύτερη ψυχραιμία στα πράγματα
διεισδύοντας συγχρόνως ίσως και
βαθύτερα απ’ όσο θα μπορούσε ένας
Έλληνας». Η ιστορία ξεκινά το 1939
και φτάνει μέχρι το 2001 και αφορά

την ζωή των κατοίκων του χωριού
Πλάκα, που βρίσκεται απέναντι από την
Σπιναλόγκα καθώς και των λεπρών της
Σπιναλόγκας. Το βιβλίο έκανε γνωστό
το δράμα της Σπιναλόγκας και «Το
Νησί» είναι φυσικά η Σπιναλόγκα όπως
αναφέρει η Κατερίνα Λέχου: «Το είχα
διαβάσει το βιβλίο όταν ακούστηκε ότι
είχε γίνει best seller, δεν γνώριζα για τη
Σπιναλόγκα, είχα μια ασαφή εικόνα για
το που βρίσκεται αυτό το νησί, είναι
και αυτό το όνομα το ξενικό και νόμιζα
ότι είναι κάπου στη Μεσόγειο χωρίς
να ξέρω ότι είναι τόσο κοντά, στην
Κρήτη. Αυτό το βιβλίο έγινε πραγματικά
αφορμή για να γνωρίσω μια πτυχή ενός
κομματιού της ελληνικής ιστορίας που
ούτε που φανταζόμουν ότι υπήρχε»
O σκηνοθέτης Θοδωρής
Παπαδουλάκης, είναι γνωστός για
την ποιότητα της δουλειάς του τόσο
στην Ελλάδα όσο και στο εξωτερικό,
αλώστε δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι οι ταινίες
του έχουν λάβει 24 διεθνή βραβεία.
Είναι επίσης γνώριμος στην Ελληνική
τηλεόραση με τη σειρά του Mega,
«Μπαμπά μην τρέχεις». Ο ίδιος δεν
κρύβει τις δυσκολίες, την ευθύνη που
αισθάνεται, καθώς και την ευαισθησία
του για την Κρήτη. «Είναι μια πολύ
μεγάλη παραγωγή και μια από τις
δυσκολίες που αντιμετωπίσαμε είναι
το μέγεθος όλης αυτής της παραγωγής
προσπαθώντας να ακολουθήσουμε
τις περιγραφές του βιβλίου, και να
είμαστε όσο το δυνατόν πιο πιστοί σε
αυτό που έχει

πολύ ενδιαφέρον ταυτόχρονα. Μου
αρέσει πολύ η ιστορία γενικότερα και
χαίρομαι που, μέσα από τη δουλειά
μου, μπορώ να κάνω μια επίσκεψη στο
παρελθόν με πολλή έρευνα και από
περιγραφές άλλων ανθρώπων για τo
πώς ήταν η ζωή τότε. Από κει και πέρα,
παλεύω να μπορέσω όλο αυτό να το
αναπαραστήσω μέσα στη δουλειά μου.
Μου αρέσει πάρα πολύ, το διασκεδάζω
και χαίρομαι όταν μου δίνεται η
ευκαιρία να δώσω φως σε πτυχές της
ζωής του νησιού μας που τείνουν να
ξεχαστούν».

Hellenic University Honors Past PAA President
EMMANUEL VELIVASAKIS
For the faculty and students of
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,
Greece, Thornton Tomasetti Managing
Principal Manny Velivasakis is proof that
hard work can pay off. Last month, the
university’s school of engineering/civil
engineering department presented Velivasakis an award of honorable distinction.
The biannual Eupalinos Award,
named after a sixth century Greek
engineer who built a 3,400-ft tunnel
that still exists today, is presented to
civil engineers of Greek descent for
their achievements and contributions
to the field. Recipients of this award
are chosen for their innovative body of
work of international scope as well as
their social contributions.
“This is a high profile award from
one of the largest universities in
Greece,” Velivasakis said. “It is an honor
to be recognized for the work that we
do at Thornton Tomasetti.”
Velivasakis isn’t certain who nominated him for the award, although he
believes it was a member of the faculty.
“I received a call from Simos Gerasimides, a former Thornton Tomasetti
employee who is a doctoral candidate
at the university, who said he had heard
I had been nominated for the award,”
Velivasakis said. “I didn’t know anything
about it and was quite surprised.” A
short time later, Professor Charalambos
Baniotopolos, chairman of the civil engineering department, notified Velivasakis that he had been selected.
An invitation to the awards ceremony and lecture features the U.S. Capitol
dome, one of Velivasakis’ projects.
Velivasakis spent three days at the
university, meeting with faculty and
students and touring the facilities and
laboratories. He also met with the local
mayor and governor of northern Greece.
As an Eupalinos honoree, Velivasakis
was asked to give a technical lecture
following the award presentation.
“The university widely advertised the
program, and it drew a large number of
people, both from within the university as well as local professionals,” he
said. “This award is generally given to
Europeans, and it was a bit unusual
for them to honor an American. Many
people responded to that, including

several Americans living in Thessaloniki, including the U.S. Consulate Consul
of Greece, who attended the award
presentation and lecture.

“Also on hand was a large group of
students. Each year several students
from the university’s architecture and
engineering departments come to the
U.S. as part of their senior field trip.
Their trip usually includes a visit to our
company headquarters, where they
attend a presentation about who we
are and what we do, take an office tour
and have the opportunity to interact
with some of the engineers. Several of
the students saw the posters around
campus publicizing the event and wanted to come and say hello,” he said.
Velivasakis gave a presentation on
the history of tall and supertall towers.
Velivasakis’ presentation, “Sky
Pokers: State of the art in structural
design”, offered a brief history of tall
and supertall towers. It also focused
on the challenges and innovations of
three Thornton Tomasetti projects:
Petronas Towers, Taipei 101 and
Shanghai Tower.
“These kinds of technical presentations make an imprint on the students,”
Velivasakis said. “They want to see what
the rest of the world is doing.”
It also made an impression on some
of the professors and engineers in the audience. Velivasakis was approached by an
area engineer following the program who
said he enjoyed the lecture, but would
have trouble being enthusiastic about
designing four-story buildings after seeing
our work on 125-story structures.
There was considerable coverage
of the award in the local media, and
subsequently, Velivasakis was approached by the Technical Chamber of
Greece, a professional organization for
practicing engineers, to speak. “They
wanted me to give a different presentation,” he said. “They wanted me to talk
about how I was able to find success in
another country. Greece is a small country, and people are looking beyond its
borders for growth.”
“While it’s always nice to be recognized, international honors like this”,
Velivasakis said, “really help put the work
that we do into perspective. “When we
design buildings, we are doing our job.
We don’t realize, however, that the whole
world is watching. It’s a good feeling when
others pay attention to the work that you
do. We are taking structural engineering
to the next level, and people around the
world are acknowledging that.”

Jonathan Kountis
Major League Baseball Draft
The New York Mets selected Jonathan Kountis in the 19th round of the
Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday,
June 8th. Kountis, a 6-3, 225 lb. righthanded pitcher from Akron, Ohio was
the 572nd pick overall. He was 7-4 for
the Embry-Riddle Eagles this season,
pitching 88.0 innings while striking out
90 opponents.
Kountis, 22, played his first three
collegiate seasons at Ohio Dominican
University and compiled a 20-9 record.
The Indians drafted him in the 42nd
round (1,265th overall pick) in last
year’s draft, but he did not sign.
Kountis was a two-time NAIA AllAmerican at Ohio Dominican before
transferring to Embry-Riddle for his
senior season. During his collegiate

career, he was a two-time NAIA
All-American (2007-08); first team
All-Region (2007); American Mideast
Conference first team selection in 2007
and 2008; played in 40 games as a Panther; recorded a 1.49 ERA as a freshman in 66.2 innings; went 20-9 overall
at ODU; gave up just 61 hits in 239 at
bats during his junior season He was
drafted in the 42nd round of the MLB
Draft by the Cleveland Indians in 2009;
participated in the Cape Cod League in
2008; selected by Baseball America as
the third-best major league prospect in
the prestigious Alaska Summer League
where he led the league in strikeouts
in 2007.
A 2006 graduate of Firestone High
School, in Akron, he played four sea-
sons where he garnered the Most Valuable Pitcher award in each of his four
seasons as a Falcon. He holds school
records for career wins and strikeouts
and was named to three Akron All-City
and All-District first teams as senior cocaptain. Firestone coach Brad Lightfoot
said. “I think the thing that he brings to
the table as a pro, that separates him
from other players, is his work ethic.
Jonathan Kountis has the best work
ethic of any kid I have ever coached. I
hope he succeeds.”
Johnathan is the son of Noula
and Demetrios Kountis, who was PAA
District 3 governor in 2002. He will
be playing this summer for the Mets
minor league affiliate, The Brooklyn
Cyclones.

Cretan Ladies Association
AMALTHIA
The Cretan Ladies’ Association “Amalthia”
was established on March 16, 1930, at the Sts.
Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church
of Chicago. The main purpose of the Association
is to promote the acquaintance and friendship of
its members, to nurture respect for the Orthodox faith, and to tighten cultural relations with
Greece.
Amalthia, from its inception, has helped many
philanthropic causes, poor children, and families
with needs here and in Crete. All presidents that
have served with their boards have worked very
hard for the future of our chapter.
Some of our annual philanthropic contributions are:
The Greek American Nursing Home. Our
Youth also has performed Cretan dances for them
and we serve refreshments.
Contribute to Holy Cross Theological College.
Have a raffle to help support the Cretan
House.
Contributed to the purchase of school supplies to the children of Alexandria Egypt.
Monetary contributions to members in need.
We support other Greek American Organizations.
Amalthia also hosts a Christmas party for the
Cretan children. Santa Claus is at our party to give
gifts to the Children. We have a dinner for Kathara
Deftera at our Leski every year.
We also participate in the Greek parade in
Chicago and support the Cretan Youth’s functions.

Στης 21 Απριλίου, 2010 γεννήθηκε ένα πανέμορφο
κοριτσάκι η Isabel Κυριακή Greniev. Είναι η κόρη της
Στέλλας και Νικόλαου Greniev και εγγονή της πρώην
Πρόεδρου Τούλα Μπογδάνου και του κ. Παναγιώτη
Μπογδάνου. Ευχόμεθα ολόψυχα να σας ζήση το
νεογέννητο και να την χαίρεστε.
Την Κυριακή 20 Ιουνίου ο Σύλλογος μας διοργάνωσε με
μεγάλη επιτυχία και μεγάλη συμμετοχή από μέλη το ετήσιο Picnic
στο Belmond State Park του Long Island. Πολλά μέλη είχαν την
ευκαιρία να συναντηθούν και να χαρούν την καλοκαιρινή αυτή
εκδήλωση του Συλλόγου μας. Ενόσω οι μικρότεροι είχαν την
ευκαιρία να επιδείξουν τις δεξιοτεχνίες στα ομαδικά παιχνίδια,
οι ψησταριές στήθηκαν και το πρωτάθλημα στο τάβλι ξεκίνησε.
Το πλούσιο γεύμα συμπλήρωσε ο εορτασμός της γιορτής του
Πατέρα που διοργάνωσε όπως κάθε χρόνο η Νεολαία «Λάβρης».
Τα αστεία, η καλή παρέα και το φαγοπότι συνεχίστηκαν μέχρι
αργά το βράδυ όπου κλείστηκε και το ραντεβού για του χρόνου.
Ευχόμαστε καλό καλοκαίρι και καλές διακοπές σε όλους.

Η νεολαία του ΙΔΟΜΕΝΕΑ διοργάνωσε την γιορτή της
Μητέρας στην αίθουσα του ΜΙΝΩΑ στις 10 Μαΐου, 2010.
Ο Μιχάλης Μαυρουδής, ο Στηβ Στυλιανουδάκης και ο
Αντώνης Μαρματάκης μας διασκέδασαν με ένα τρικούβερτο
γλέντι στο οποίο βρέθηκαν όλες οι μητέρες να χορεύουν
και να τραγουδούν. Επίσης, απολαύσαμε τα μικρά παιδιά
μας σε κρητικούς χορούς που χόρεψαν για όλες τις μητέρες
με πολύ αγάπη. Γευτήκαμε και τα ωραία ψητά που
μαγειρεύτηκαν στα κάρβουνα.
Σας υπενθυμίζουμε ότι το καλοκαίρι η αυλή του
συλλόγου μας είναι ανοιχτή. Μπορείτε να απολαύσετε μια
κρύα μπύρα ή ένα καφέ κάτω από την ωραία κληματαριά.
Ακόμη εσείς και η παρέα σας μπορείτε να γευτείτε τη
νόστιμη κουζίνα στα κάρβουνα και ότι άλλο επιθυμείτε. Ο
Λάμπρος είναι πάντα εκεί έτοιμος να σας περιποιηθεί.
Με μεγάλη επιτυχία έγινε ο χορός της νεολαίας του
Ιδομενέα στις 15 Απριλίου, 2010 στη Νέα Υόρκη. Μας
διασκέδασαν οι οργανοπαίκτες: Νεκτάριος Σαμόλης: Λύρα
Θοδωρής Πελεκανάκης: Λαούτο, Γιάννης Παπαγεωργίου:
Λαούτο.
Το χορευτικό του Ιδομενέα που χόρευε μαζί πριν δέκα
χρόνια μας ταξίδεψε σε παλιές ωραίες στιγμές με τους
χορούς που μας παρουσίασε. Ήταν η έκπληξη της βραδιάς.
Στη συνέχεια συμμετείχαν και τα μικρότερα
παιδιά χορεύοντας διάφορους κρητικούς χορούς που
μαθαίνουν κάθε Παρασκευή. Ευχαριστούμε τους γονείς,
παππούδες και γιαγιάδες που φροντίζουν να γίνετε αυτό
πραγματικότητα. Αυτήν την περίοδο οι δάσκαλοι είναι
η Ελένη Σωπασή, ο Νίκος Μαυρομιχάλης και ο Μπάμπης
Γασπαράκης.
Η πρόεδρος του Ιδομενέα Άντζυ Κάβαλος έδωσε ένα
μεγάλο ευχαριστώ εκ μέρους της νεολαίας στον κ. Ορέστη
Πλαϊτη για τα ωραία φαγητά που φρόντισε να έχουν στο
χορό και για αυτά που επιμελήθηκε να μαγειρευτούν με
τις δικές του συνταγές. Επίσης ευχαρίστησε όλους που
πρόσφεραν διάφορα φαγητά και γλυκά την ημέρα αυτή.
Ο ετήσιος χορός του Συλλόγου ΜΙΝΩΑ θα γίνει στις 9
Οκτωβρίου, 2010 στην αίθουσα του συλλόγου ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ

Lainey plans to attend the University of Illinois in

of practicing medicine and truly understand what it takes
to become a medical doctor. She looks forward to the
experiences she will have being an Illini, and welcomes any

Lainey has been a PYA and Cretan Youth of Chicago
member for the past five years. She has been active in the
youth dance group for seven years and has been a dance
teacher for the youth for three years. She has a passion for
Cretan music, writes mandinades, and loves spending her
time off in Crete with her siblings, Patricia and George and
her family. We wish her the best in her new venture.

John G.Volakakis served the PAA for many years as treasurer, director and general supervisor. He was a member of
the first Pancretan Youth Organization and elected its first
treasurer in 1948.
He was an active member of the Cretan Fraternity of
Chicago all his life. Mr. John Volakakis passed away peacefully at home after many years of illness. He is survived by
his wife Kay and two daughters, Joan and Joyce, and two
grandchildren.

Demetrios left behind one brother, David Paschalidis,

Wise words that summarized the principles of Dr. George
Nick Cavros, who reposed in peace January the 9th, 2010
in Chania, Crete. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, but spent
several formative years in his fatherland of Sfakia and Askifou, Crete, with his brother, Steve during World War II. Upon
his return to the United States, he pursued a career in medicine and received his degree with the highest honors from
the University of Virginia. After serving in the United States
Coast Guard, he went on to serve his community in Norfolk,
Virginia as a family physician and an associate of Eastern
Virginia Medical School.
Upon his retirement, he
divided his time between
Virginia Beach, Virginia
and Chania, Crete with
his wife of over 50 years,
Irene.
George Cavros was a
very active member of
the Annunciation Greek
Orthodox Cathedral in
Norfolk, Virginia, and
served many terms as
a member of the board
and as its president.
Never forgetting his
Cretan heritage, he was founder of the local chapter of the
Pancretan Association, “Omalos”, and served many terms
as its president. He did much to showcase Crete, its history,
and its traditions to the broader community. He was also a
member of AHEPA having served as president of the local
chapter in Norfolk, but also as Educational Chairman at the
national level.
Giorgi, as he was known to the many who loved him,
is survived by his wife Irene, from Chania; Crete, his son
Nick and his wife Catherine from Winston Salem, NC; his
daughter Evie and her husband Stephen Dinos from Fairfax,
Virginia; and his beloved grandchildren Irene, Kalli, and
George.
Deacon Dr. Paul John Tsahakis
Deacon Dr. Paul John Tsahakis dedicated his life to God
many years ago. His recent Ordination to the Deaconate
is the most obvious expression of that commitment, but
certainly not the first or the last in his life’s journey. Paul
was bom in Roanoke, Virginia on December 5, 1956. The
youngest of
three sons,

church centered family.

and their hard-working and pious father John. The fruit
bears witness to the good seed.
As a child, Paul served the church as an altar boy and
an active parish youth. Paul served his family by working in
the family’s restaurant, Zorba’s, and by excelling in school.
The hope and dream of most Greek immigrants is that their
children would become educated and graduate with an
academic degree. Paul would fulfill and exceed his parents’
dreams and expectations through dedication and hard work.
He worked his way through college, graduated from
Virginia Tech and then enrolled at the Medical College of
Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated with honors.
Paul’s parish priest while growing up in Roanoke was Father
Nicholas Bacalis. His Presbytera was the former Vivian
Couchell of Charlotte. They recognized Paul’s many special
qualities and introduced him to Vivian’s lovely niece, Lea
Crambes of Charlotte, North Carolina. They wed on June 13,
1982. Lea and Paul’s marriage has been a living example of
the Epistle of Ephesians read at every Greek Orthodox wedding, both giving of themselves and becoming one. Lea set
aside her nursing career to raise a family in the true Orthodox tradition. She learned from her mother, Emily Couchell
Crambes of blessed memory, the sacrifices necessary to
make a proper and spiritual home. Whatever Paul has accomplished is because Lea has been at his side.
They were blessed with three remarkable sons, John Paul,
Anastasios Nicholas, and James Michael. In 1990, the Tsahakis
family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where they finally
settled down. Paul’s orthopedic practice thrived. He developed and maintains enormous respect within the medical
community as an excellent surgeon and leader. In 1999 he
became the president of the Miller Orthopedic Clinic before
starting Total Spine Specialists, May 1, 2003, to provide the
best comprehensive spine care in the Charlotte region. Paul
continued to grow academically, publishing and lecturing
on new spinal surgery procedures and practices around the
world. Above all else, however, Paul’s studies and training
served to further his commitment to his patients.
In 1998 we were blessed with the opportunity to start
a new Greek Orthodox parish in Charlotte. Of course, Lea
and Paul were of the first to respond to the call. Suffice it
to say that among the many heroes at St Nektarios is Paul
Tsahakis.
It is only natural that a life dedicated to God and to His
service should lead to the Deaconate. Paul and Lea exemplify these qualities. Through the mentoring and examples of
his brother, Fr. George Tsahakis, Chancellor of the Metropolis of Atlanta, Fr. Steve Dalber, Proistamenos of St. Nektarios,
Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, President of Holy Cross Seminary,
and His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, Paul
grew in his faith and has accepted the call to the Deaconate.
May God grant him many years of continued service. AXIOS!

Wedding
On Saturday, May 15th, Irene Kourletakis, daughter of Hercules and Sandy Kourletakis, and George Bariatakis, son of Yianni
and Maria Bariatakis from Sioux City, Iowa, tied the knot at the
Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in Southgate, Michigan.
The honor of interchanging the crowns belonged to Sylvia Gounaki, a longtime friend of Irene’s.
A reception and dinner dance followed at the Arnaldo’s Banquet Center in Riverview, Michigan, where family and friends,
coming from California, Chicago, Iowa, Florida, Nebraska, New
York, Ohio, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Texas as well as from Toronto, gathered to celebrate with the newlyweds. An exceptional
performance was given by the Cretan Musicians Christo Fasarakis
on the lyra, Tony Gergiannakis on the first laouto, and Gregory
Manouselis on the second laouto, who entertained the wedding

early hours of
Sunday.

May 14th, at the
Cretan House of
Detroit’s Fraternity “Pseloretes”.
With a very warm
welcome Irene and George, along with their parents, greeted all
their guests with live Cretan music and a great variety of sweets,
topped with the unbeatable Cretan and Greek cuisine.

Πικνίκ 4ης Περιφέρειας
Το τριήμερο της 4ης έως 6ης Ιουνίου, και για τρίτη
συνεχόμενη φορά, σημειώθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία το
καλοκαιρινό Πικνίκ της 4ης Περιφέρειας στη περιοχή του
Καλαμαζού του Μίσιγκαν, το οποίο και εκδηλώνεται ανά
δύο έτη.
Στο πικνίκ αυτό είχαν τη χαρά να συμμετάσχουν οι
οικογένειες των μελών και οι στενοί φίλοι αυτών από τους
Κρητικούς Συλλόγους της Τετάρτης Περιφέρειας. Φέτος
όμως είχαμε
τη χαρά να
υποδεχτούμε στο
ξεφάντωμα και
μέλη Κρητικών
συλλόγων από
το Τορόντο
και το Οχάιο.
Ιδιαίτερη τιμή
μας έκανε με τη
παρουσία του
ο πρόεδρος της Παγκρητικής Ενώσεως Αμερικής ο κ.
Θεόδωρος Μανουσάκης με τη συνοδεία της γυναίκας του,
τη κα. Ρίμα Μανουσάκη (Υπεύθυνος Ταμείου Υποτροφιών
της ΠΕΑ), κάτι που γίνεται για πρώτη φορά στη ιστορία του
θεσμού αυτού. Στην εκδήλωση αυτή μας τίμησαν εξίσου
με τη παρουσία των ιδίων και των μελών των οικογενειών
αυτών ο 1ος Αντιπρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ ο κ. Ιωάννης Μάνος,
η κα. Ερασμία Βλαστός Νοβότνη (Γραμματέας ΠΕΑ), ο κ.
Νικόλαος Βερυκάκης (Κυβερνήτης της 4ης Περιφέρειας),
ο κ. Τζέημς Ντένη (Κυβερνήτης 3ης Περιφέρειας), η
δεσποινής Στασία Μαράκη (Τεχνολογίας/Πληροφοριών
ΠΕΑ), η κα. Ελένη Ραννέη (Στρατηγικός Σχεδιασμός ΠΕΑ)
καθώς και ο Παυλής Παπουτσάκης (Πρόεδρος Κρητών του
Συλλόγου Κνωσσός, Τορόντο). Παρόντες ήταν και όλοι οι
πρόεδροι των συλλόγων της 4ης Περιφέρειας, όπως και
οι πρόεδροι των συλλόγων της νεολαίας της Περιφέρειας.
Οι ευνοϊκές καιρικές συνθήκες επέτρεψαν σε όλους τους
μικρούς και μεγάλους να χαρούν την εξοχή καθώς και
τις παιδικές και αθλητικές εγκαταστάσεις του πάρκου.
Βέβαια δεν θα μπορούσαν να λείψουν τα γλυκίσματα, τα
εδέσματα και οι μεζέδες που μας ετοίμασαν οι κυρίες και
οι κύριοι των συλλόγων, όπως επίσης δεν θα μπορούσε να
λείψει το Κρητικό τραγούδι και ο χορός. Οι μουσικοί που
προσφέρθηκαν να μας διασκεδάσουν αφηλοκερδός κατά τη
διάρκεια αυτού του διημέρου ήταν ο Αλέκος Μαρματάκης
στη Λύρα, ο Αντώνης Μαρματάκης στο πρώτο Λαούτο,
ο Μιχάλης Μαυρουδής στο δεύτερο λαούτο/μαντολίνο,
καθώς και ο Χρήστος Μαραγκουδάκης στο δεύτερο λαούτο.
Θερμά συγχαρητήρια στην τετραμελή ορχήστρα η οποία
διατήρησε το κέφι και στο εστιατόριο “Θέο και Σταίϊσης
Ρεστοράντ” ως τις πρωινές ώρες της Κυριακής.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του πικνίκ, και με πρωτοβουλία
του 1ου Αντιπροέδρου της ΠΕΑ κ. Ιωάννη Μάνου,
πραγματοποιήθηκε η λεγόμενη Συνέλευση Ηγετών, στην
οποία έλαβαν μέρος όλοι οι Πρόεδροι των Συλλόγων της
Περιφέρειας υπό την παρουσία των μελών της ΠΕΑ, ώστε
να συζητηθούν τυχόν προβλήματα για την ενίσχυση των
μελών όλων των συλλόγων της 4ης Περιφέρειας.
Εκ μέρους των συλλόγων του Ντιτρόιτ στέλνουμε
τα θερμά μας συγχαρητήρια στους πρωτεργάτες και
υπευθύνους της οργανώσεως αυτής το κ. Νικόλαο
Βερικάκη και τη κα. Δέσποινα Βερικάκη οι οποίοι, μαζί
με τη συνδρομή μελών των συλλόγων της περιφέρειας,
κατάφεραν να σμίξουν μικρούς και μεγάλους μέσα σε μια
ατμόσφαιρα χαράς, κεφιού και γλεντιού, έτσι ώστε να
διατηρηθεί το παραδοσιακό στοιχείο που μας εκφράζει, και
που συντελεί στη συνέχιση της ύπαρξης μας. Συγχαρητήρια
και ένα θερμό μπράβο σε όλους λοιπόν που συνέβαλαν
με κάθε τρόπο για την επίτευξη του φετινού μας πικνίκ!

Eleni Sampson
June 11, 1936 – September 22, 2009
Eleni Sampson passed on peacefully in
her Boulder, Colorado, home on September
22, 2009, after years of meeting the challenges of Multiple Sclerosis and diabetes.
At her side as death came was her husband of 44 years, Earl Sampson, whom she
married in 1965 in the Assumption Greek
Orthodox Church in Denver
Eleni was born on June 11, 1936 in Oak
Creek, Colorado, to Pete and Artemisia Callas. She finished
high school in Oak Creek and earned bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder, also doing
postgraduate work at the University of California Berkeley
and the University of Moscow. She taught Russian and
French at Wheatridge High School from 1962 to 1966 and at
Fairview High School from 1966 to 1987.
Eleni was a loving person and a person with a great
zest for life and wide interests; intellectually curious and
outgoing. She loved being with family, entertaining school
colleagues and students, and visitors from Russia, attending
various performances, and especially traveling to Greece,
the Soviet Union, and other European countries, Canada and
Mexico and various regions of the U.S.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Mary
Callas Taylor, a nephew Nikolas Callas and sister-in-law Mary
Lou Callas, both of Palo Also, California, an aunt Maria Kiskis
of Boulder, and many beloved uncles, aunts and cousins in
Greece. She is survived by her husband Earl, brother George
Callas of Palo Alto, brother Panayioti Kelaidis of Denver,
nieces Artemisia Sooklaris of Coronado, California, Eleni
Callas of Palo Alto, Anna Gravley of Corte Madera, California,
Eleni Kelaidis of New York City, and Yoana Georgis of Boulder; nephews Anthony Taylor of Denver, Tachi Taylor of New
York City and Tachi Callas of Castro Valley, California, Jesse
Kelaidis of Denver; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.

Philoptochos for four years. During
that time she was one of nine presidents to receive the initial Agape Award representing the
Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area at the National Philoptochos
Convention in D.C. Rosemary initiated an outreach program
for the church which makes and delivers hot meals once a
month to approximately 70 needy recipients. Recently she
was elected to the Metropolis of Pittsburgh Philoptochos’

Condolences
It is with a sad heart that we
express our sincere sympathy to
the family of Mr. Chris Daskalos, a
long-time friend and member of our
chapter.
Chris passed away April 21, 2010.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55
years, Carol Daskalos; sons, John Daskalos and wife Cristiane, William Daskalos, Michael Daskalos
and wife Maria; and grandchildren, Samantha and Octavio; sister, Marshia Maestas. Predeceased by: father, John
Daskalos; mother, Hattie Collias Daskalos; sisters Kiriako
Daskalos and Georgia Zervos; and brother, John Daskalos Jr.
Chris was born in Chania, Crete, Greece in 1933 and
passed away in Houston, Texas after a long battle with MSA.
He was a retired engineer who began his career in Charleston WV with Michael Baker Engineering and eventually was
transferred to Houston. Chris & Carol moved to San Antonio
where he retired. As a result of his illness, his lovely wife
Carol took over the family needs and also took care of Chris
until the last few months of his life. When it became very
difficult for her to take care of him due to her own health,
they moved back to Houston where their sons and their
beautiful wives very unselfishly took care of their father.
We will miss a dear friend and member of our chapter.
May his memory be eternal.
Summer is around the corner we hope every one of our
Pan Cretan members will have a safe and enjoyable summer
and will return back in the fall ready to continue with the
work of our chapters. Have fun, stay safe.

Την Κυριακή 16 Μαίου 2010, γιορτάσαμε την ημέρα της
Μητέρας, εις το Tolland Family Restaurant. Οι υπεύθυνες
κυρίες Τίνα Κατσουνάκη και Σίτσα Βαρυπατάκη, φρόντισαν
ώστε και τα σαράντα παρευρισκόμενα μέλη μας να
περάσουν ένα πολύ όμορφο απόγευμα. Τις ευχαριστούμε
πολύ καθώς και για τα ωραία τριαντάφυλλα που μας
προσέφεραν. Επίσης ευχαριστούμε και τούς ιδιοκτήτες του
εστιατορίου, Ευτύχη Ντουλάκη, Μανώλη Νταγκουνάκη και
Στέργιο Καραμεσίνη για τα καταπληκτικά φαγητά που μας
είχαν ετοιμάσει.

όπου αποφοίτησε με Bachelors Degree απο το University of
Massachusetts Iceburg School of Business.
Και σε ανώτερα. Ο Γρηγόρης είναι γυιός της Σίτσας και
του Κυριάκου Βαρυπατάκη. Επίσης ο Γρηγόρης πρόσφατα
άνοιξε δική του επιχείρηση, το Amherst Crapery, εις το Amherst Massachusetts. Καλορίζικο, καλές δουλειές και καλή
επιτυχία.

Μαρία Μιχελάκη, κόρη της Ευαγγελίας
και Μανώλη Μιχελάκη, όπου
αποφοίτησε με Masters Degree in Psychology απο το American International

Συλλυπητήρια στην οικογένεια του Κώστα και Χριστίνας
Ντουρουντουδάκη για τον θάνατο του προσφιλούς Πατρός
τους, Κωνσταντίνου Ντουρουντουδάκη, που συνέβει στα
Μυριοκέφαλα Ρεθύμνου. Ο αείμνηστος απεβίωσε 98 χρονών. Ας είναι ελαφρύ το χώμα που τον σκεπάζει και ας είναι
αιωνία η μνήμη του.

which took place on Saturday, July 18, 2009, in Rethymnon,
Crete. John and Sophia Manolis, parents, are members of
the chapter, and we would like to wish them Congratulations
and Warm Wishes. Most Reverend Metropolitou Lambes
Sevretou blessed the wedding bands and gave his blessings
to the young couple. A dinner-dance reception at Mythos
restaurant with musician Evangelou Galonaki was enjoyed
into the early morning hours with families and friends. Best
of luck Dora and Niko with much love and happiness for

ο Σεβασμιώτατος και έδωσε τις ευχές του στο νέο ζευγάρι.
Την υπέροχη βραδιά που ακολούθησε πλαισίωσαν το καλό
παραδοσιακό φαγητό και το συγκρότημα του Ευάγγελου
Γκαλονάκη που έδωσε κέφι και διασκέδαση μέχρι τις
πρώτες πρωινές ώρες.
