Ours is a dynamic parish that functions twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to the day to day things we do for our parish, there are perhaps no better examples of the love and devotion our faithful parishioners have for our community than their selfless efforts to make our Spring and Fall Festivals the overwhelming successes they have been for many years. By the time many of you read this, our Spring Festival will have already taken place. Hopefully, the sun shone brightly, crowds were abundant, our food offerings were in great demand, and everyone left with smiles on their faces after yet another pleasant experience at a Saint Katherine festival. Some might be inclined to think, “another year, another festival,” but I am far more inclined to be grateful for the blessings of those who serve their community. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to everyone who selflessly and lovingly spent many hours toiling on behalf of our community. Unquestionably, volunteerism fuels our community in so many ways—our festivals being one of many endeavors that are tended to by so many of you whose only expectation is that you labor with the knowledge that your efforts make a difference in our community. So please, allow me to take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt thanks—ευχαριστώ παρα πολύ!—to all of you who set up tables, tended bar, served calamari, souvlaki, pastitsio, moussaka, chicken, lamb, gyros, exquisite desserts, and so many other popular dishes. I would indeed be remiss if I also did not acknowledge the great contributions so many of you made to the cooking of food and pastries for our festivities that are the hallmarks of our well deserved reputation for excellent cuisine. Again, thank you all! I would like to take a moment to “switch gears” and pass along a couple of meaningful items, on the subject of Stewardship, I ran across recently and thought you might enjoy: A little girl watched intently as the collection was taken in a certain church. When the ushers finished passing the trays, she whispered to her mother, “Mommy, how do they get the money up to heaven?” The mother smiled and replied, “The church doesn’t send money to heaven, but uses it to bring heaven down to us.” There is a legend about Zaccheus the dishonest tax collector whom Jesus called down from a sycamore tree one day to have dinner with him. Zacchaeus converted as a result of this personal encounter with Jesus. In later years, the legend says, Zacchaeus used to rise early every morning, carry a bucket of water to this tree, and carefully water its roots. On one occasion his wife followed him and when asked the reason for this strange concern over an old sycamore tree, Zacchaeus replied, “This is where I found Christ.” The Church is where we find Christ. It is where we are baptized. It is where we are married. It is where we hear His word. It is where He comes to dwell in our hearts when we receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. This is why we love the Church. This is why we support it. This is why we work for SUNDAY CHURCH DUTY ROSTER it. It is the Body of Christ where we find forgiveness, peace, and eternal salvation. Our Saint Katherine Spring Festival 2012 will be held Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 3. This event is a massive undertaking requiring many volunteers. Volunteering at the Festival is a lot of fun and a great way to meet new people. It is very gratifying to help the Church. Please don’t be shy! We welcome your assistance. If you would like to work at the festival, please contact Andrea Ballard ([email protected] or 703-250-5419). 3 CATECHETICAL (SUNDAY) SCHOOL WE WISH ALL DADS a Happy Father’s Day on Sunday, June 17. Summer begins on June 20. Vacation from school will have commenced, and children will begin enjoying more of the outdoors and play. There are some very special days on the Church calendar: Holy Pentecost is celebrated on June 3, All Saints Day on June 10, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist on June 24, and the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29. It would be fulfilling for our parents and children to share conversation about those very special Church days. Just so our parents know ahead of time, Catechetical (Sunday) School will begin on September 16, with registration occurring on September 9. However, until then, children and parents can have some wonderful and profitable time together reading and discussing Holy Scripture. We wish all of our parents and children a very restful and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing all of our children back in September. Until then, we look forward to worshiping with you in Church over the summer months. JOHN G. HAROCOPOS ORATORICAL AND CATECHETICAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND THE PARISH COUNCIL ESTABLISHED this fund in memory of our longstanding and beloved Principal, Mr. John Harocopos. This fund is used annually to first assist any parishlevel Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival finalist at the Junior and/or Senior Level to defray hotel or airfare expenses should they move beyond the District (Virginia) level. Should there be no Oratorical Festival participant in a given year, the Proistamenos, in consultation with the Catechetical School Director, will determine award(s) to be made to deserving graduating senior(s) of the Catechetical (Sunday) School. Please consider making a donation to this fund in John’s memory. May his memory be eternal. HOPE (ages 7 and under) JOIN HOPE AFTER LITURGY on Sunday, June 10 for ice cream and popsicles at the park. We hope to see you. Please contact Kelly Alexis or Toula Christou ([email protected] or [email protected]) with any questions. GOYA (ages 13-18) GOYA HAS CHURCH DUTY on Sunday, June 24. Rachel Cameron will be GOYA Captain and read the Epistle. GOYA will have meeting on Sunday, June 24. The main topics of discussion will be the 2012 Tournament Wrap-Up and plans for the 2013 basketball tournament. The Greek School is pleased to offer a unique learning experience for the youth of our community. After a successful introduction of Conversational Greek classes on Wednesday evenings, we will now offer Conversational Greek at two levels—Level 1 for children up to the age of 10 and Level 2 for older children from ages 10 to 15. These classes will be combined with Greek Dancing instruction by expert teachers. For more details please contact Elena Lagos (703-241-1176) or Chris Christou (703-533-0055). We expect that these classes will be filled quickly, so please do not delay. 4 PAIDEIA AS WE CONCLUDE the school year, we take away many wonderful memories of fun times and great friendships. There were numerous celebrations, field trips, and so many stimulating activities. We enjoyed the Family Fun Night, the Greek Independence Day program, and the parade in Baltimore. There were the many parties— birthdays, name days, Halloween, Valentine, and Apokries. We played with our friends. We learned about ourselves, our families, our environment and how things work. We even conducted science experiments! We learned about our faith and went to Liturgy. We learned our letters and numbers in Greek and in English, as well as shapes, colors, etc. We went to the Pumpkin Patch and the Reston Zoo. We made beautiful crafts, paintings, and drawings. We baked bread and cookies; and also made vegetable soup for our “formal” luncheon (to practice our table manners.) We jumped, tumbled, and moved like animals for our Movement Class Show on May 23. At our Christmas programs, we sang carols and the Kalanda; and at the Graduation ceremony in June, we recited poems in Greek and English. This spring we also planted a butterfly garden with the help of our parents—Cristina Vasilis, Peggy Borst, and Julia Young. These are moments we all will cherish. The teachers and I would like to congratulate the graduating class of 2012. May Saint Katherine protect and guide them throughout their lives. On a personal note, I must thank Fr. Costa Pavlakos, the Parish Council, and the parents for their continued support during my first year as director. It has been a challenging and most rewarding experience. Our school is flourishing thanks to our wonderful teachers—Elsa Papageorgiou, Maria Dimopoulos, Yianna Kehaiov, Chryssa Cook, and Fotini Kotsoronis—who take such loving care of our students every day and provide them with a strong Christian foundation for their future scholastic success. I am also grateful to Gilda Vretea Kornhauser who teaches music and Shelby Tombras who channels the children’s energy in her Movement Class. We look forward to another productive and exciting school year starting on September 10. Enrollment for the fall 2012 session PAIDEIA is now OPEN. Registration will take place after Liturgy starting June 1. We provide a unique, faith-based program for children 2 to 5 years old, offering a loving and safe environment and an enriching and challenging Greek/English curriculum, that prepares students for their next developmental level and enhances their moral and spiritual growth. For more information, contact Maria Papathanassiou ([email protected] or 703-671-7715). We would like to recognize the support of SAFEWAY and thank them for providing healthy snacks for our children. Tanzania Update from Maria Roeber. Kristo amefufuka! Amefufuka kweli! Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen! Greetings from Bukoba, Tanzania! Things here continue to progress with respect to the Orthodox health centre. We have received our registration from the Tanzanian government, and have been interviewing potential staff. The organization from Greece, KEDAS, which founded the centre and continues to finance it, is sending representatives this month to help finalize legal issues and work contracts with staff, as well as to help work out the details of organization and administration for the centre. We are very much looking forward to seeing them and working with them, as this will help us to move forward toward opening the health centre. I continue to be involved in language study and learning as much as I can about Tanzanian culture, and will be working towards obtaining a Tanzanian nursing license as soon as possible so that I can use my skills in the centre. We are looking forward to welcoming two short term medical teams from the US in September and October, and probably at least one team from Greece sometime this summer. Our Paschal celebrations were joyous, although very wet--we are in the (very) rainy season here, and it was pouring with rain on Pascha morning, but the paschal flame seemed even more bright because of it! In the next two weeks we will welcome another OCMC missionary as well as a priest from America, who will be helping my fellow missionary, Felice Stewart, conduct a seminar for Tanzanian priests on ministering to addicts. The Alcoholics Anonymous meetings which Felice has started are going well and she hopes that the health centre will become a place in which she can do counseling for mental health patients in the future. Thank you for your continued support and interest in OCMC's mission in Tanzania! Please continue to pray for us! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In Christ, Maria. Guatemala Trip, January 2013. Saint Katherine will send a mission team to the Guatemala Orphanage January 16-24, 2013. Fr. Costa will be the spiritual leader and Nicole Leontsinis will be the team leader. For application information, please contact Nicole at [email protected] Samaritan’s Feet. We will be collecting children’s shoes again this year during the entire month of August. This is so the children will have new shoes to wear to school starting in September. They are asking for children’s sizes 5-67, male and female. The shoes should be gym/sneakers/ tennis shoes. There will be a special bin in the foyer of the Meletis Charuhas Center. The shoes will be distributed to children in the Washington, DC area. For many children this will be their first pair of new shoes. Appalachia Outreach, August 24-26. Led by Fr. Costas, our Mission and Outreach Committee is organizing a panOrthodox group to travel to the West Virginia Panhandle region from August 24–26, 2012 in support of Habitat for Humanity‘s “critical repair” projects. Critical repairs translate into many areas: painting, clearing debris, roofing, basic carpentry, plumbing, etc. The goal is to help the poor, predominantly elderly, residents in the region have safer, drier, and healthier living conditions. We encourage both our youth (ages 14 and older accompanied by a parent) and adults to volunteer for this worthwhile effort. If you have a construction-related skill, please consider volunteering. We especially need you, but workers at all skill levels are welcome. Habitat will provide a project coordi- nator at each repair site along with all the required job materials. This mission offers an excellent opportunity for volunteers to help a disadvantaged group by providing an immediate service and reinforces the commitment of our faith to help the less fortunate. If interested please contact Daphne Papamichael, [email protected] or Stacey Kazacos, [email protected] BAILEY’S CROSSROADS HOMELESS SHELTER Feeding the Homeless. On May 5, parents of the Greek School children served lunch at the shelter. On Thursday, June 28, children and parents of the Vacation Bible Camp will prepare the dinner and serve at the shelter. All organizations of our parish are encouraged to serve at least once each year at the shelter. For more information or if you would like to participate individually, contact John Demakis at [email protected]. Clothing and Toiletries. We continue to collect new and used clothing and unopened toiletries for the Shelter. Although winter is almost over, they are still collecting warm clothing, coats, scarves, gloves, etc. They will store them for next winter. And there is always a need for adult shoes of every kind for men and women. Dress shoes, casual shoes, new shoes, and used shoes in good condition. Please give what you can. Bring your items to our community center and we will deliver to the shelter once a week. Thanks to all who have contributed in the past. Thanks also to members of our Mission and Outreach Committee who volunteer to take the items to the shelter weekly. Furniture Donations. The Shelter welcomes new and used furniture for people who are leaving the Shelter for arranged housing. The Shelter will pick up furniture within a 10-mile radius of the shelter. To arrange pick up or if you have any questions, call the Shelter Director, Thomas Nichols, on his cell phone at 703-659-3460. They accept all furniture except appliances (TVs are accepted). This is a symbolic figure, Cosmos, representing the people of the world living in darkness and sin, and involved in pagan worship (7). However, the figure carries in his hands a cloth containing scrolls which represent the teaching of the Apostles (8). The tradition of the Church holds that the Apostles carried the message of the Gospel to all parts of the world. In the icon of Pentecost we see the ful7 The Cosmos, appearing in the 8The scrolls that are carried by fillment of center of the icon, representing the Cosmos are representing the the promise the people of the world. teachings of the Apostles. of the Holy Spirit, sent down upon the Apostles who will teach the nations and baptize them in the name of the Holy Trinity. Here we see that the Church is brought together and sustained in unity through the presence and work of the Holy Spirit, that the Spirit guides the Church in missionary endeavors throughout the world, and that the Spirit nurtures the Body of Christ, the Church, in truth and love. 11 ON MISSING MY FATHER Maria Papageorgiou AS FATHER’S DAY APPROACHES every year, I can’t help but think of my late father. He was an extraordinarily kind and even-keeled man. A prince. (Can you tell I was a Daddy’s Girl?) That dignified, hard-working, family-oriented, and genteel man set the bar for me as far as how a person should lead his or her life. For many of you reading these words, I am certain you feel the same about your father. Not enough can be said about good men who become good husbands and fathers. Like many people of my generation (Boomer and preBoomer) of Greek descent, I had a father who came through Ellis Island during the early part of the 20th century when a large influx of immigrants from southern and eastern Europe arrived in the United States, seeking a better life. At the age of 16, he left Mani with his Uncle George, his father’s brother who had already been to America, and headed to this new land. He took nothing more than courage, determination, and a quick mind with him. (My father never bragged, but his brother, my Uncle Theodore, told me when I visited the “horio” that my father was the only student from his area to be accepted at a regional high school. Admission was based on test results. And the man always knew more American history than I did. He also had a way with words.) From his early years on the Lower East Side of New York City, where, much to his delight, he met other ethnic groups, he came south with his Uncle George, to Maryland, where they opened a confectionery, employing all the fancy techniques they had learned in New York City. It was in Maryland that he eventually met my mother at an AHEPA banquet, married her and had his own business (a restaurant, of course) AND had his family. What do I remember most about him? His dignity, his devotion to God, his gentle firmness, his goodness of soul. His patience, his elegant and refined way of dressing. His bearing. His absolute kindness and gentleness toward all. If this sounds like over-the-top daddy-partiality, I can only write this in defense. When he died, an incredible number of people said this about him: This last gentleman in Frederick [Maryland] has died. I never remember my father saying anything really unkind about anyone. However, I have an indelible memory of his genuflecting and praying before his iconostasio at home. My equally wonderful late husband, Vassilios, used to say about my father that he “went with the cross in front of him.” I didn’t know if that was a Greek saying, but I got the meaning. When I sometimes falter in my behavior and don’t know what to do, I think of my dad and try to follow his example. Some might wish to call kindness weakness, but I don’t believe that. Why? Because I had a father who showed me otherwise. 12 A MEMORIAL PRAYER ON THE SATURDAYS OF SOULS ΨΥΧΟΣΑΒΒΑΤΟΝ JUNE 2, 2012 The Orthodox Church remembers those who have fallen asleep in the Lord in prayers at every Divine Liturgy. Besides this, there is a Memorial Service in which the Church also remembers the dead. According to tradition, the Memorial Service is offered on the third, ninth, and fortieth day after a death, as well as, the yearly anniversary of the death. In addition to these times, a Memorial Service is offered for all the departed faithful on four Saturdays of Souls. These are the two Saturdays preceding Great Lent, the first Saturday of Great Lent, and the Saturday before Pentecost. In the United States, the Service is also offered on Memorial Day. Therefore, we are called to pray for those who have fallen asleep in the Lord on Saturday, June 2. Please take time to prepare a list of deceased loved ones for whom you wish the priests to pray. _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ STEWARDSHIP SHOWN BELOW is a list of families and individuals who participated in the 2012 Saint Katherine Stewardship Program through April 30. In faith, prayer, and sacrifice, my family and I wish to share in the support and work of our Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Katherine. Out of our love and gratitude to God for all His blessings, we would like to pledge the amount of $____________ for the year 2012 Today’s Date: _______________ Name: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Address: __________________________________________________________________________________ City, State, Zip: ____________________________________________________________________________ Telephone and email address: _________________________________________________________________ (Continued from page 5, column 1) METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON ORTHODOX SENIOR HOUSING Metropolitan Washington Orthodox Senior Housing (MWOSH) is a 501(c)(3) which was started over 15 years ago with the purpose of developing an Assisted Living Facility for Seniors and persons with disabilities. On April 30, 2012, MWOSH received a donation for $600,000 from the Estate of Michael C. Soteriades. His legacy, along with many others who have bequeathed their estates to our cause, is appreciated. May his memory be eternal! Through years of successful fundraising efforts, MWOSH purchased land in Darnstown, MD for their proposed development. However, it became clear that the subject location was not ideally suited given the additional infrastructure costs required for such a development. Most recently, MWOSH accepted an offer to sell the Darnstown property at a profit. Moving forward, MWOSH will have the financial flexibility to explore new solutions to achieve our ultimate goal—create a Pan-Orthodox facility to care for our loved ones. As of April 30, 2012, Saint George Parish Council President, Michael Haldas initiated a conversation with MWOSH to potentially use some of their land for a future development. In addition, MWOSH is interested in identifying small houses in close proximity to Orthodox Churches which could be used as home-care facilities for our Seniors.
