The Dormition Fast
Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are fast approaching the Feast of the Dormition of The Virgin Mary, which is
also the name day of our beloved Church. We need to keep in mind that this is a
period of fasting prior to the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The
fast begins on August 1st and ends on August 15th.
The Dormition Fast is short, but it is a stricter than any other fasting periods with
the exception of Great Lent. One should fast on all days from the usual nonLenten foods, such as all animal products (meat, poultry, milk, eggs, etc.) and
olive oil and wine. In addition, one also abstains from fish on all days of the fast
including weekends, except on the Feast of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord,
which is on August 6th, when fasting can be eased by having fish, olive oil and
wine. On the two weekends, which fall during the fast (Saturday and Sunday),
that fast is also relaxed a bit by having wine and olive oil but no fish.
Why a Dormition Fast you might ask? Every Orthodox Christian generally knows
why we should fast for Christmas and the Easter and many follow it but while
many know about the Dormition Fast, very few follow it. Why? Because they
don’t understand its purpose. Fasting during the Dormition Fast helps us become
like the Theotokos, an obedient servant of God, who heard his word and kept it
better than anyone else has or could. The Church through its Paraklesis services
gives us the opportunity to come to the Theotokos deathbed and eulogize the
woman who bore Jesus the vessel of our salvation. Come and pray to the
Theotokos with us and with the church, and by her prayers, we may be able to
save our souls. Fasting in its full sense accomplishes this. We need to allow less
time for leisure and more time for prayer and reflection on she as she gave us
Christ and became the first and greatest Christian.

Paraklesis services will take place and lets all fast and celebrate together this great
Feast Day, the “DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY”.

Η Νηστεία της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου
Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί και αδελφές,
Πλησιάζουμε γρήγορα τη γιορτή της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου, που είναι καί η ημέρα της
γιορτής της αγαπημένης μας Εκκλησίας. Πρέπει να έχουμε κατά νου ότι αυτό είναι ένα χρονικό
διάστημα νηστείας πριν από τη μεγάλη γιορτή της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου. Η νηστεία αρχίζει
την 1η Αυγούστου και τελειώνει στις 15 Αυγούστου.
Η νηστεια αυτή είναι σύντομη, αλλά είναι αυστηρότερη από οποιαδήποτε άλλη περιόδο
νηστείας, με εξαίρεση της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής. Ο Καθένας πρέπει να νηστέψη για όλες τις
ημέρες από τα συνήθεις μη νηστίσιμα φαγητά, όπως όλα τα ζωικά προϊόντα (κρέας, πουλερικά,
γάλα, αυγά, κ.λπ.) το ελαιόλαδο και το κρασί. Επιπλέον, ένας πρέπει να απέχει επίσης από το
ψάρι για όλες τις ημέρες της νηστείας συμπεριλαμβανομένου και του Σαββατοκύριακου, εκτός
από την Εορτή της Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος μας, η οποία είναι στις 6 Αυγούστου, οπου
επιτρέπεται το ψάρι, το ελαιόλαδο και το κρασί. Στά δύο Σαββατοκύριακα, τα οποία εμπίπτουν
κατά τη διάρκεια της νηστείας το κρασί και το ελαιόλαδο επιτρέπετε, αλλά όχι το ψάρι.
Μπορείτε να ρωτήσετε γιατί μια νηστεία της Κοιμήσεως; Κάθε Ορθόδοξος Χριστιανός ξέρει
γενικά γιατί θα πρέπει να νηστέψη για τα Χριστούγεννα και το Πάσχα και πολλοί την
ακολουθούν, αλλά ενώ πολλοί γνωρίζουν για την νηστεία της Κοίμησης, πολύ λίγοι το
ακολουθούν. Γιατί; Επειδή δεν καταλαβαίνουν το σκοπό της. Η νηστεία κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής
της περιόδου μας βοηθά να γίνουμε σαν την Θεοτόκο, ένας υπάκουος δούλος του Θεού, που
άκουσε το λόγο του και τον κράτησε καλύτερα από οποιονδήποτε άλλον έχει ή θα μπορούσε. Η
Εκκλησία μέσω των Παρακλησεων μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να έρθουμε στο νεκροκρέβατο της
Θεοτόκου και εγκωμιάσωμε τη γυναίκα που έφερε τον Ιησού, το πλοίο της σωτηρίας μας. Ελάτε
γιά να προσευχηθούμε μαζι στην Θεοτόκο και με την εκκλησία, καθώς και με τις προσευχές της,
μπορεί να είμαστε σε θέση να σώσουμε τις ψυχές μας. Αυτό πετυχαίνε η νηστεία στην πλήρη
της έννοια. Πρέπει να επιτρέπουμε λιγότερο χρόνο για αναψυχή και περισσότερο χρόνο για
προσευχή και προβληματισμό σχετικά με αυτή, όπως αυτή μας έδωσε τον Χριστό και έγινε η
πρώτη και μεγαλύτερη Χριστιανή.
Παρακαλούμε ελέγξτε το ημερολόγιο του Αυγούστου στο πίσω μέρος του Kοινοτης ως προς το
πότε θα λάβουν χώρα οί Παρακλήσεις και ας νηστεψουμε όλοι και να γιορτάσουμε μαζί αυτή τη
μεγάλη ημέρα της γιορτής, τής «Κοίμησεως της Θεοτόκου».

PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT
My dearest Parishioners,
It has been several years that all of us are working hard together for the betterment of our Church and community. We are starting to see signs that our efforts are being productive. The turning point may have been our
95th Anniversary Celebration at the Museum of Fine Arts. Ιt was a well planned, well executed, wonderful,
elegant and classy event. Many have doubted us but Somerville is back on the map. We are seeing the light
which is becoming brighter every day. People and communities have started talking positively about us. Our
name and events are in the news or are the news. Our industrious and hard working community sends positive
messages in all directions.
We have just completed a year full of events and accomplishments. We are bringing to our Beloved Dormition
Church the miraculous icon of Axion Estin which will be guiding us for many years to come. It has been
painted and it is in the gold and silver plating stage. Thank you all for your generosity helping to bring the icon
to our church.
We are about to make history. Our 100th Anniversary Committee is working diligently preparing events to
celebrate our faith and 100 years of rich history, culture and heritage.
Our Greek school programs have been revitalized and the classrooms have been renovated. Our GOYA program have been revised and restructured according to the new guidelines from our Metropolis. For the first
time we are sending 10 kids to the summer camp. We have hosted events for our Metropolis district and our
youth.
We had record sales and profits in our festival, Bakaliaros and Palm Sunday dinners. We have initiated three
new annual fund-raiser events, a Greek Music Night, a Trivia Night and a Gyro and Loukoumades Day. All of
these events will make significant future contributions to our financial status.
Furthermore, we have renovated the lower hall Kitchen, the Altar in the Chapel and we have installed a new
security system.
All these accomplishments are happening because of you, every single one of you due to your love, support,
contributions and hard work. Bravo to all of you. I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to our
Priest Konstantinos Manetas for his vision, leadership, guidance and very hard work. His contributions have
made the Greek school a reality and it has improved GOYA. Thank you Presbytera Anna, and all organizations, Choir, 100th Anniversary Committee, PTO, GOYA, Golden Club, Sunday School and Altar boys. I am
grateful to all Philoptochos ladies. Finally, I am very grateful and indebted to a very special group of individuals, our Parish Council. Their dedication, commitment, constant support, love and hard work are vital to our
success and make my job easier. Thank you all.

ΚΑΙ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ....
Πολυαγαπημένοι μου Ενορίτες,
Έχει αρκετά χρόνια που όλοι μας εργαζόμαστε σκληρά από κοινού για τη βελτίωση της Εκκλησίας και της
κοινότητας μας. Έχουμε ήδη αρχίσει να βλέπουμε σημάδια ότι οι προσπάθειες μας έχουν αρχίσει να δίδουν
καρπούς. Το σημείο καμπής μπορεί να ήταν ο εορτασμος της 95η Επέτειος μας στο Μουσείο Καλών
Τεχνών. Μια καλά σχεδιασμένη, καλά εκτελεσμένη, υπέροχη, κομψη και αριστοκρατικη εκδήλωση. Πολλοί
είχαν αμφιβολίες, αλλά το Somerville είναι παλι έπανω στο χάρτη. Βλέπουμε το φως που γίνεται
λαμπρότερο κάθε μέρα. Οι άνθρωποι και οι κοινότητες άρχισαν να μιλούν θετικά για εμάς. Το όνομα και τα
γεγονότα μας είναι στις ειδήσεις ή είναι η είδηση. Η Επιμελής κοινότητα μας που εργαζετε σκληρά στέλνει
θετικά μηνύματα προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις.
Έχουμε μόλις ολοκληρώσει μια χρονιά γεμάτη εκδηλώσεις και επιτεύγματα. Θέλουμε να φέρουμε στην
αγαπημένη μας Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου την θαυματουργή εικόνα του Άξιον Εστί που θα μας καθοδηγεί για
πολλά χρόνια. Έχει ήδη ζωγραφισθεί και είναι στο στάδιο επενδύσεως με χρυσό και ασήμι. Σας ευχαριστώ
για την γεναιοδωρία σας να φέρουμε αυτην την εικόνα στην εκκλησία μας.
Είμαστε έτοιμοι να γράψουμε ιστορία. Η επιτροπή εορτασμου της 100ης Επετείου εργάζεται επιμελώς για
την προετοιμασία εκδηλώσεων για τον εορτασμό 100 χρονων πίστης, πλούσιας ιστορίας, του πολιτισμού
και της κληρονομιάς μας.
Τα ελληνικά σχολικά μας προγράμματα έχουν αναζωογονηθεί και οι αίθουσες έχουν ανακαινιστεί. Εχουμε
12 μαθητές αλλά έχουμε πολλές δυνατότητες. Το πρόγραμμα της GOYA έχει αναθεωρηθεί και
αναδιαρθρωθεί σύμφωνα με τις νέες κατευθυντήριες γραμμές από την Μητρόπολη μας. Για πρώτη φορά,
στέλνουμε 10 παιδιά στην θερινή κατασκήνωση. Έχουμε φιλοξενήσει εκδηλώσεις για την περιοχή της
Μητροπόλεως μας και της νεολαίας μας.
Είχαμε ένα νέο ρεκόρ πωλήσεων και κερδών στο φεστιβάλ μας, στό δείπνο του μπακαλιάρου και της
Κυριακής των Βαΐων. Έχουμε ξεκινήσει τρία νέα ετήσια γεγονότα έρανου, μια βραδια Ελληνικης
Μουσικής, μια βραδια Τriviα και την ημέρα Γυρου και λουκουμάδων. Όλα θα κάνουν σημαντικές
μελλοντικές εισφορές στην οικονομική μας κατάσταση.
Επιπλέον, έχουμε ανακαινίσει την Κουζίνα της κατω αίθουσας, το Ιερό στο παρεκκλήσι και έχουμε
εγκαταστήσει ένα νέο σύστημα ασφαλείας.
Όλα αυτά συμβαίνουν εξαιτίας σας, με την συμμετοχή του κάθε ένας από εσάς. Η αγάπη σας, υποστήριξη,
συνεισφορά και η σκληρή δουλειά σας κάνουν όλα αυτά πραγματικότητα. Εύγε σε όλους σας. Θα ήθελα να
εκφράσω την ευγνωμοσύνη και την εκτίμησή μου προς τον Ιερέα μας Κωνσταντίνο Μανέτα για το όραμα,
την ηγεσία, καθοδήγηση και πολύ σκληρή δουλειά του. Η συνεισφορά του έχει κάνει το ελληνικό σχολείο
μια πραγματικότητα και έχει βελτιώσει το GOYA. Σας ευχαριστούμε Πρεσβυτέρα Άννα, και όλες τις
οργανώσεις, Χορωδίας, Επιτροπή 100ης επετείου, PTO, GOYA, το Golden Club, το Κατηχητικό σχολείο
και τα αγόρια του Ιερού. Είμαι ευγνώμων σε ολες τις κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου. Τέλος, είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων
και υπόχρεος σε μια πολύ ιδιαίτερη ομάδα ατόμων, το διοικητικού μας Συμβουλίου. Η Αφοσίωση, η
δέσμευση, η συνεχή υποστήριξη, η αγάπη και σκληρή δουλειά σας είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για την επιτυχία
μας και κανουν τη δουλειά μου πιο εύκολη. Σας ευχαριστώ όλους.

Teach your child how to pray
"It's time for bed and we must pray" or "God is good, thank Him for the food that He
gave you" are some of the most common expressions of the parents to their children. Unfortunately too often we see the difficulty our children have to tell their small children
prayers. For this reason we feel frustrated and puzzled, because while many times we
teach our children to pray, the result is not satisfactory.
This is because parents and grandparents forget one big truth: children learn and imitate
their elders. How do we want our children to pray to God when they have never seen us pray? How you want them
to learn to thank God for their food or health, unless they have first seen us fallen on our knees thanking the Creator
for the day gone, or the food He provided us, for our health, for His protection, or His guidance through life?
Let your children watch you. Children learn by imitating. Our children and grandchildren need to see us every day
praying and studying the Bible. Below we give seven simple tips that could help children understand the importance of prayer:
1. Share your problems with them. Most often when a certain condition occurs in the family, parents pray for God
to provide a solution without the children participating in this prayer. Pray with them and give them the opportunity
to refer to the problem of family and God have their own way. Reliance should not last longer than a prayer before
dinner time.
2. See off your children with a prayer. Every day we have the opportunity to teach prayer to our children with a
simple and quick way: pray with them before they leave for school or a trip, by asking for the protection and guidance from God. Ask your children to do the same.
3. Create a list for prayer and write all the names of family and friends, and people in need of prayer. Empower
children to have their own list of favorite ones from family, relatives, friends and peers. Set a specific time to pray
with them. It is advisable that your prayers be short and concise so as not to tire your children but also give an opportunity to them to pray with greater mood.
4. Thank God for each response. There have been a few times that while we have asked God to act and the outcome
of a problem has been resolved in the best way, we forget to thank him for the result. Thank God for that result by
praying together with your children. So they learn not only to ask, but also offer thanks. In contrast, even if your
prayers are not heard, teach your kids the value of patience and trust in the mercy of God.
5. Advise and also pray. When the child comes to you with a problem, eg. the relationship with a classmate, give it
advice while at the same time pray for the help of Christ or the Saints. Instruct it and pray with it. Never one or the
other only.
Do not forget that the best teaching is your own example. An icon stand in the corner of a bedroom, a lit vigil lamp
in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary or a Saint, an Orthodox prayer book as Synopsis or small Horologion, give
children a sense of the living presence of God. Your spiritual progress will become a blessing to you, your children
and to those around you!

εὐχαρίστησε Τον γιὰ τὸ φαγητὸ πού σου
ἔδωσε” εἶναι μερικὲς ἀπὸ τὶς πιὸ
συνηθισμένες ἐκφράσεις τῶν γονέων πρὸς Ξεπροβοδείστε τὰ παιδιά σας μὲ μία
προσευχή. Καθημερινὰ ἔχουμε
τὰ παιδιά τους. Δυστυχῶς ὅμως πάρα
τὴν εὐκαιρία νὰ διδάξουμε τὴν
πολὺ συχνὰ διαπιστώνουμε τὴ δυσκολία
προσευχὴ στὰ παιδιά μας μὲ ἁπλὸ
τῶν παιδιῶν νὰ ποῦν τὶς μικρὲς παιδικές
καὶ σύντομο τρόπο: Προσευχηθεῖτε
τους προσευχές. Γιὰ τὸ λόγο αὐτὸ
μαζί τους πρὶν αὐτὰ φύγουν γιὰ τὸ
αἰσθανόμαστε

ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀπὸ ἀνάγκες ποὺ αὐτὰ
Ἀφῆστε τὰ παιδιά σας νὰ σᾶς δοῦν. Τὰ
βλέπουν καὶ γνωρίζουν. Καθορίστε
παιδιὰ μαθαίνουν ἀπὸ τὸ παράδειγμα. Τὰ

παιδιὰ καὶ τὰ ἐγγόνια μας πρέπει νὰ δοῦν
προσευχηθεῖτε μαζί τους. Καλὸ θὰ

καὶ τὴ μελέτη τῆς Αγίας Γραφής.

ἔτσι ὥστε νὰ μὴν κουράσουν τὰ

παιδιὰ σας ἀλλὰ καὶ νὰ δώσουν
παιδιὰ νὰ κατανοήσουν τὴν σπουδαιότητα
τὴν εὐκαιρία σ’ αὐτὰ νὰ
τῆς προσευχῆς:
προσευχηθοῦν μὲ μεγαλύτερη
διάθεση.
Μοιραστείτε τα προβλήματα μαζί τους.
Τὶς περισσότερες φορὲς ὅταν
προκύπτει κάποιο πρόβλημα στὴν Εὐχαριστῆστε τὸ Θεὸ γιὰ κάθε
ανταπόκριση. Δὲν εἶναι λίγες οἱ
οἰκογένεια, οἱ γονεῖς προσεύχονται
φορὲς ποὺ ἐνῶ ἔχουμε ζητήσει

I would like to thank the prior Executive Board under the direction
of Afrodite Tsourianis for their
dedication and hard work in
Philoptochos. We all appreciate the two wonderful
years they gave to all. I am pleased and exited to assume the role as President and look forward to working alongside Vice President, Sevy Dres.
Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω την προηγούμενη
Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή υπό τη διεύθυνση της
Aφροδίτης Tσoύριανη για την αφοσίωσή τους και τη
σκληρή δουλειά στην Φιλοπτώχου. Εκτιμούμε πολυ

On August 14th, we are once again having church vesper services, which will begin at 7:00 pm to celebrate
our Blessed Virgin Mary and the Name Day of our
Church. Following the vespers service, we will have
a Lenten Reception.
On August 15th, please join us for Divine Liturgy for
our Church’s Name Day, followed by a Luncheon
hosted by our Parish Council.

FANOUROPITA
Each year the Orthodox
faithful bake a cake in honor of Saint Fanourios’ (fah-NOOree-os) day on August 27th. He is believed to be the
“finder” of lost items, or a job, a cure or anything else the
person has sought for, is found. Those who bake this cake
and bring it to church as an offering of thanks or “tama.
”It’s a delicious spiced cake with raisins and walnuts that’s
easy to assemble and great with coffee or tea.
Ingredients:
1 cup sunflower oil ● 1 cup sugar ● 3/4 cup orange juice ● 1/4 cup brandy ● 2 tsp. ground
cinnamon ● 1/4 tsp round clove ● 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder ● 3 cups all purpose flour ●
1/2 cup ground walnuts ● 1/2 cup raisins
Preparation:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly grease and flour a 9 inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl using a whisk, mix together the sunflower oil and the sugar until well
combined. Add the orange juice, brandy, spices, and baking powder and mix well.
Using a spatula, incorporate the flour into the batter and mix until just combined. Mix
in the ground walnuts and raisins. Transfer the batter into the cake pan and smooth the
top with the spatula. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 45-50 minutes or until the
cake is nicely brown. Sprinkle on top when cool with powdered sugar is optional.

Sunday School
“A Teaching Ministry”
Another school year has come to an end and I would like to thank all of our wonderful teachers
for their dedication each Sunday, Seminarian Constantinos Trumpower, Kyria Ourania Kapotas, Tina Armand and Teddy Menounos. This has been a great year, it makes me so happy to
see the children each and every Sunday eager to come to church, eager to come to Sunday
School. I have heard wonderful things from families throughout this past year. One of our
younger students conducts her own class each Tuesday when her Yiayia babysits. She brings
her bag filled with the lesson she learned the previous Sunday and they have a class. Another
Yiayia told me about how her grandson reads his bible before bed just like he learned in Sunday School. Another young lady has been so excited about following the daily activities of the
Lenten Journey some of which include reading passages from the bible and spending time with
our families instead of watching television just to name a few.
We want to wish our 4 graduates, Maria Dardonis, Maria Loutraris, Martha Nkangabwa and
Christina Lynch much success in their future endeavors.

Κατηχητικό Σχολείο
Μια άλλη σχολική χρονιά έχει έρθει στο τέλος της και θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλους τους
θαυμάσιους δασκάλους μας για την αφοσίωσή τους κάθε Κυριακή, τον ιεροσπουδαστή
Constantino Trumpower, την κα. Ouρaνia Kapoτά, την Τίνα Armand και τον Teddy Μενούνο. Αυτή
ήταν μια εξαιρετική χρονιά. Αυτό που με κάνει πολύ χαρούμενη είναι που βλέπω τα παιδιά μας
κάθε Κυριακή πρόθυμα να έρθουν στην εκκλησία, και να ανυπομονούν να έρθουν στο
Κατηχητικό Σχολείο. Έχω ακούσει θαυμάσια πράγματα από τις οικογένειες σε όλο αυτό το
περασμένο χρονο. Μία από τις νεότερες μαθητριές μας διεξάγει τη δική της ταξη κάθε Τρίτη,
όταν η γιαγιά της την επιβλέπει . Φέρνει την τσάντα της που ειναι γεματη με τα μαθήματα που
έμαθε την περασμένη Κυριακή και έχουν μια τάξη. Μια άλλη γιαγιά μου είπε για το πώς ο
εγγονός της διαβάζει την Αγία Γραφή πριν πάει στο κρεβάτι ακριβώς όπως το έμαθε στο
Κατηχητικό Σχολείο. Μια άλλη νεαρή κοπέλα έχει τόσο ενθουσιασθεί με τις καθημερινές
δραστηριότητες της Σαρακοστής που περιλαμβάνουν την ανάγνωση αποσπασμάτων από τη
Αγία Γραφή και το πέρασμα του χρόνο μας με τις οικογένειές μας, αντί να παρακολουθούμε
τηλεόραση, για να αναφέρουμε μόνο μερικά.
Θα ήθελα να ευχηθώ στους τεσσερις αποφοίτους μας, Μαρία Δαρδώνης, Μαρία Λουτράρης,
Μάρθα Nkangabwa και Χριστίνα Lynch μεγάλη επιτυχία στις μελλοντικές προσπάθειες τους.

“Α Liturgical Music Ministry of our Parish”
We have come to the end of the
choir year. This means, I have
spent a whole year with you making music with the choir for Sunday liturgies and special feasts. Time just flew!
Έχουμε φτάσει στο τέλος του χορωδίακού έτους. Αυτό

map it out a bit, assess what works and what we might do
better, hunt down new music, hunt down
new choir members, plan concerts, and yes, relax a bit. I
also tend to wander around visiting other
churches, both Greek and Russian.

Carol Salvo and Ethel Bonos
The Parish Council along with Fr. Konstantinos would like to once
again congratulate Toula for all her hard work and dedication to our
church. Even though she needs no introduction, below is a brief biography.
Toula was born in Filiatra, Greece and came to the United States in the
late 1950’s. She was married to the late John Dres and has three sons,
Phillip, Tasos and James. She has nine grandchildren and two godchildren. Toula was a member of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA)
for twenty plus years. She has been a member of the Philoptochos organization for over forty years and on the Executive Committee for
many years. Over the past five years, she has been responsible for facilitating monthly meals for the Somerville Coalition for the Homeless.
She has also been a proud member of church’s wonderful choir for the
past sixteen years. Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church is proud and
lucky to have her as a parishioner for so many years and many more to
come. CONGRATULATIONS to her and her family!
