The month of August calls us back to the work of prayer and intercession to the Panagia, our all holy Mother the Theotokos. In the Paraklesis services during the two-week Fast we call upon the Panagia for the health and well-being of our parish family. However, everything that we do in church life, whether it is the physical labor of the festival or the prayerful commitment of Panagia’s fast, is guided and blessed by Christ and His Saints all the same. For every labor of love that is offered in Church, whether it is cooking souvlakia or prostrating in front of the icon of Panagia, the source of our strength is always the Risen Lord. For all our efforts to be successful, the blessing of our Lord is an absolute necessity. ST. Athletics His resurrection the Risen Christ finds His disciples fishing. They did not recognize Him, but having worked all night they were unsuccesful. As He had done before, Jesus directed them to throw their nets on the right hand side of the boat. A great shoal of fish came into their nets. Immediately, the disciples realized it was their Master standing by the shore. Peter, followed by the rest of the disciple rushed out, only to find Jesus had a meal of fish ready for them. The incident is described in our hymn of note for this month. After your descent into Hell and your Resurrection from the dead, your Disciples, O Christ, losing heart most probably at your separation from them, turned back to their work: and once again there were boats and nets and a catch nowhere. But you appeared as Master of all things, O Saviour, and ordered them to cast their nets on the right hand side: and at once the word was deed, and there was a great multitude of fish, and a strange supper ready on land. Your Disciples partook of it then; make us also worthy to enjoy it now in spirit, O Lover of humankind. It has always seemed strange to me that after everything the disciples had witnessed that they just went back to their old profession of fishing. Having no courage to go out and preach Christ’s Resurrection they retreated to their comfort zone. However, even in that labor which they were most familiar with they had no success until Christ came and directed them. Ultimately, He directed them to become fishers of men, not on their strength, but by the power of the Holy Spirit. Similarly, in all our daily efforts, we will only be truly productive when we work with humility and obedience to God’s will. The source of our strength is Christ and the power behind our labor is the Holy Spirit. We might think that we are indispensable and that all of life’s responsibilities fall on us. Yet, we must understand that God has the power to take care of everything. However, He allows us to be tested and to work as an expression of our consent to His will. Whatever our occupation or daily labor, it is fulfilled only when it is in line with God’s will and becomes empowered within His plan for our own salvation. We often think that some occupations are more ‘spiritual’ or ‘religious’ than others. The truth is that what makes our work and our life holy is the level to which we allow God to direct us and empower us. When we understand the necessity of the presence of the Holy Spirit in every undertaking, then all that we do will be blessed and the reward in this life and the next will indeed be great. In this hymn of note however, we see that Christ always pushes us to endeavors that are more spiritual. Even though the disciples were successful by His help in their fishing, they were redirected once again to become fishers of men and to preach the gospel with courage and conviction. “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” 2 The Voice Likewise, we often limit our service to God in our daily lives to our weekly rituals or to tasks within our comfort zone. While Christ accepts and blesses all that we offer to Him, He is always calling us to more spir- itual challenges. Just as we respond to things like the festival or social occasions, we also receive the call to pray, to fast, to confess, and to worship. We are all called to enjoy the purpose of labors that is to fully and continually worship God. And even though all forms of service and labor are accepted as prayerful sacrifice to God when they are performed for His sake, our ultimate calling is to worship God in spirit and in truth. The Church exists first as a venue for sanctifying the world and making us holy. Our service to the Church follows as a response to God’s gift and call to holiness. Starting in September, I ‘ll step away from the ‘Hymn of Note’ for a while, to address other issues of parish life. Perhaps, the 11th eothinon and other hymns will inspire a future continuation of the series. Until then, keep listening to the hymnology of the Church and make their words your own words, and let them speak to your life as they did to the holy men and women who composed them. Amen. Fr. Metropolitan Ignatios has been serving in the mission field for over twenty years. In the 1990’s , His Eminence led the Orthodox mission in Calcutta, India. In 2005, he was elected Metropolitan of Madagascar and has been leading the missionary efforts of our Orthodox Church. His Eminence spoke of the work that is being done in Madagascar though seventy parishes, thirty priests, and a variety of ministries including feeding programs, orphanages, homes for the elderly, schools and clinics. A video presentation of the ministry in Madagascar was presented during the fellowship hour and all the parishioners contributed to making a donation to help with the mission. His Eminence also made a presentation on Thursday, June 13th in our community hall. Along with Fr. Nikon of Nea Skete, faithful from throughout the Chicagoland area enjoyed two spiritually uplifting speakers on the topic of missions and on the topic of prayer. Many thanks to the Philoptochos for hosting the fellowship hour for that evening. Also many thanks to Fr. Nikon and to His Eminence Metropolitan Ignatios for visiting our community. YOUTH OUTING On Thursday, June 13th, our Handmaidens, under the leadership of Vicky Drikos, organized a youth outing for all our St. Spyridon children at Orland Bowl. Once again, our parish was successful in making the weekend truly enjoyable for everyone. Many thanks to our festival chairman John Angelos, and his planning committee for their efforts in making everything run smoothly. Of course, we couldn’t pull it off without all of our tireless volunteers that worked so hard to: prepare, cook and serve all of the delicious food; serve us beverages to keep us cool; make frappe after frappe in the relaxing Café Opa; sell many, many raffle tickets; offer Greek & Orthodox items for sale at the Bookstore; greet everyone with a warm smile at the Welcome Entrance. To our Philoptochos ladies, who baked and sold delectable sweets & loukoumades, we love all you do for us! To the youth of our parish, and the very talented St. Spyridon Dance Troupe, taught by Angelo Angelos, and the older groups of NEOLAIA, directed by Patty Jouras, and of the ‘ELLAS’ Dance Group organized by Panagiotis Alexakos, thank you for entertaining us with your beautiful dancing! Α.
