Located in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca, Intercollege has become a global education centre offering a range of academic, professional and vocational programmes of study. International in philosophy (the vast majority of its programmes are offered in English), the College hosts students from all over the world, in a multicultural learning environment, cultivating critical thinking and lifelong skills, but also promoting friendship, cooperation and understanding. The end result of this entire experience is graduates who are well prepared for successful careers, but also for further study. Apart from the University of Nicosia, Intercollege maintains close links with a number of European and American universities, giving our students various opportunities for transfer. 8 1 Cyprus is situated in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean, at the meeting point of Europe, Asia and Africa. Since the dawn of history, Cyprus has been one of the most interesting areas of the region and has a rich and visible cultural history. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Romans along with the Crusaders, the Byzantines, the Franks and the Ottomans have all left a powerful legacy for the modern visitor to see and admire. Cyprus is endowed with golden beaches, virgin green forests and other natural wonders. The environment remains relatively free from pollution and other ill-effects common to industrialised countries. Cyprus enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate. Apart from the light rainy season between November and March, Cyprus is sunny most of the time. Mean temperatures range from 8ΟC (46ΟF), during the coldest month of December, to 35ΟC (95ΟF) during the hottest month of August. The Cyprus economy is booming and political stability is firmly established. In May 2004, Cyprus officially became a member of the European Union and thus essentially became the bridge between Europe, the Middle East and the rest of the world. Having emerged as one of the region’s leading business and financial centres, the island enjoys competitive advantages in areas such as tourism, consultancy, shipping, telecommunications, banking and insurance. Italy Balkans Black Sea Greece Mediterranean Sea The weather, however, is not the only attractive feature of the island - the Cypriot people are equally famous for the warm and friendly welcome they extend to visitors. It is the seat of government and the principal diplomatic, administrative and commercial centre of the island. The city is rich in cultural and historical heritage with museums, theatres, art galleries and libraries. Foreign embassies and consulates are also located in Nicosia. The capital is an ideal centre for both business and leisure, with easy access to the island’s other cities, beaches and mountain resorts. A recognised centre for global business, Nicosia is also a popular venue for many international seminars and conferences, with an excellent infrastructure including the International Conference Centre. 14 Clearly, this overall environment is ideal for students interested in business, computing and related fields. The Nicosia Campus offers its students the facilities they need to successfully pursue their studies. Its modern computer labs and the facilities for culinary arts and aesthetics enable students to benefit from a learning environment that reflects current practices in the real world. Furthermore, students will find that their access to the campus gym, cinema, bookshop and cafeteria will provide them with a student life that will be fondly remembered for its richness. 2 Limassol Situated on Akrotiri Bay and built along 16 kilometers of the southern coast, Limassol is the island’s second largest city with a population of over 170,000. Lemesos, as the locals know it, is a vital maritime, business, tourism and service center in the region. The city, which has developed spectacularly during the past 30 years, attracts a wide range of visitors, year round, from all parts of the world because of its sturdy business climate, diverse cultural activities (such as the carnival and wine festival), museums and archeological sites, rich wine industry and the extensive range of activities it provides for tourists, business personnel and students. The majority of these are evident as soon as one enters the district of Limassol and witnesses the growing number of international banks, five-star hotels, wineries, and the numerous landmarks - like the Limassol Castle and the small port. As one glances across the coast, the island’s impressive main port, which is one of the largest and busiest in the Mediterranean, providing berths and facilities to the busy cruise industry and intense transit trade, immediately stands out, adding another dimension to the city. Limassol is known for its scenic promenade, complemented by its unique amiable holiday environment of the “tourist area”. Both are on the coast and extremely popular with the local community and visitors. These come to life on a daily basis after working hours, and even more so on weekends, as the vivacious residents of the city enjoy the amenities and the rest and relaxation these areas provide. The “tourist area” is especially popular for its restaurants, clubs and cafes, which, very often, are only meters from the Mediterranean Sea. It is no wonder that students and residents from other cities will often make the short journey to Limassol. The Limassol Campus is conveniently located in the heart of the city, only a twenty minutes walk from the coast. From the Campus, one is able to travel to Nicosia, Larnaca, Paphos and the Troodos mountain range in under one hour – ideal for those who wish to discover the island in their leisure time. Intercollege Limassol Campus has built its strong reputation locally and internationally through the effective delivery of its quality academic and professional programmes, commitment to research, collaboration with businesses and other institutions and the provision of continuous education opportunities to mature students or to organizations that invest in the training and development of their staff. The premises make provision for all aspects of student life: visual aids technology is available in all classes – teleconferencing facilities are also available in certain classrooms; computer labs are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software; a wealthy library; a bookshop; a gym for the keep-fit fanatics; and a cafeteria for the spirited student body. any challenges or difficulties that may surface and how best to tackle them. The presence of the Department of Student Affairs is also clearly evident at the Campus. The Department is responsible for organizing extracurricular activities and clubs, inviting guest speakers who address the student body on matters related to their studies or contemporary social issues, assisting students adjust to the requirements of further and higher education and helping international students acclimatise to local culture. Finally, Local and EU students seeking employment are able to utilise the services of the Departments Placement Centre and its connections to business. Intercollege Limassol Campus takes pride in what it offers and the success of its students! The average class size of 15 allows lectures to be delivered in a personalised manner, enabling students to consistently participate in class discussion. Moreover, faculty involvement in research (computer science, information technology, human resource management, hotel management, business entrepreneurship and transmission of data) provides students with the opportunity to contribute and remain current in their chosen field of study. Of course, instruction is not limited to the classroom environment; faculty often arrange visits to businesses in the district where students can see how actual hotels, wineries, factories and service corporations function. Important to the steady progress of students and to assist them in developing sound study habits is the availability of academic advisors. Each student is assigned an advisor upon enrollment with whom the student meets to select courses and to discuss 15 At Intercollege Larnaca, students benefit from quality academic programmes, small classes, professors who meet the highest standards for teaching and academic excellence, a magnificent campus, and state-of-the-art facilities. Plus, Intercollege Larnaca combines the variety and choice of a comprehensive college with the individual attention typical of a small college. Intercollege Larnaca’s convenient location, in the heart of the tourism and business area of Larnaca, provides plenty of employment opportunities for many of its students. Larnaca East meets West in Larnaca as both Christianity and Islam have revered religious sites here, with the mosque of Hala Sultan, an important Moslem place of pilgrimage, and the church and tomb site of St Lazarus, Jesus’ friend whom he resurrected from the dead. The modern city of Larnaca is built on the shores of the Bay of Larnaca in the SE of the island, a few kilometers to the north of the ancient kingdom of Kition. It is characterised by its low relief landscape as no part of the city has an elevation of more than 50 meters above sea level. The city of Larnaca is well-known for its picturesque sea-front which is beautifully lined with rows of palm trees, charming cafes and restaurants and a scenic boardwalk which is nestled alongside Larnaca’s nautical marina. The Larnaca seafront promenade or ” Finikoudes” as is known in the local Greek dialect - is the city’s hub for action and events. Indeed, the promenade comes alive on weekends and during major festivals as diverse cultural activities are staged here. The most important of these for the city of Larnaca is Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood, celebrated in early summer with a series of cultural events. Built near the seaside and enriched by beautiful beaches, people may think that Larnaca is only a summer resort destination but it is not only that. Larnaca is a town with many archaeological sites and places of interest. It has 6 museums within walking distance from its centre and its art galleries and workshops are real sources of inspiration 16 The new multi-faceted building, which is wireless and features the latest multimedia equipment in all classrooms, includes lecture rooms, computer labs with the latest in hardware and software, graphic design labs and studios, a computer engineering lab, training kitchen and restaurant, a large and extensive library, an amphitheater, a conference room and gym. The Larnaca Campus is housed in a new state of the art facility right at the heart of the Bay of Larnaca within meters of the serene Mediterranean coastline and only minutes from the town centre and the Larnaca International Airport. For Intercollege Larnaca the new campus represents the beginning of a new era and is another example of Intercollege’s commitment to better serving its students. The new state of the art building offers the latest in teaching tools and a pleasant learning environment. Additionally, the Intercollege Larnaca campus offers two unique features: The Bay View Café and Restaurant and the InterSalon. The Bay View Café and Restaurant offers great food at very reasonable prices as well as breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea in a relaxing atmosphere. The InterSalon is an outstanding Aesthetics & Hairdressing Salon and SPA with state of the art facilities and services. InterSalon offers a wide range of low priced treatments which are available to the public while offering students enrolled on these programmes the opportunity to train in a real life environment. Indeed, the new campus of Intercollege Larnaca provides every amenity a student needs to be successful. 2 ERASMUS ERASMUS is part of the European Union Life Long Learning Programme for co-operation in the field of education. Its purpose is to improve the quality of higher education and strengthen its European dimension. It does this by encouraging transnational cooperation between Higher Education Institutions, fostering greater European mobility of students and teachers, and contributing to improved transparency and academic recognition of qualifications and studies throughout the European Union. Participating students will receive a monthly ERASMUS grant to cover the costs of this mobility. Intercollege has been awarded an Erasmus + charter and maintains an Erasmus Office which provides guidance and support to incoming and outgoing students, faculty and staff. Intercollege students may study at partner institutions in other participating countries or benefit from work internships in any country within Europe. Faculty may undertake a teaching assignment at one of our partner institutions, while faculty and staff may benefit from training programs offered from other academic institutions, enterprises, or training bodies across Europe. With regard to SMP, under Erasmus all students registered at Intercollege are entitled to be placed in an enterprise in the field of their studies for training or job shadowing. The duration is of a minimum of two months stay including summers or other holidays. Students wishing to benefit from this opportunity may do it from their first year of studies and up to a year after they graduate. Announcements for such opportunities will be placed in the College website. The same information will also be available from the Erasmus Office and/or Student Affairs Office. Students: Although students benefiting from SMP will not get paid directly from the enterprise they will work for, they will receive an ERASMUS grant depending on the host country and length of stay. As a student at Intercollege, you have the opportunity to study for part of your degree in another European country (Student Mobility for Studies or SMS), or be placed in an enterprise -in the field of your studies- for job training (Student Mobility for Placement or SMP). First year students: Although you are not eligible to participate in the ERASMUS programme until your second year, now it is a good time to research your opportunities abroad. You can apply while in your first year for second year participation. Planning ahead is highly recommended as, for some of our partner institutions, you may require a reasonable knowledge of their native language. Academic Staff: The objectives of the Erasmus Staff Mobility for Teaching Assignments (STA) are: • To allow students who are not able to participate in a mobility scheme, to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of academic staff from higher education institutions in other European countries • To promote exchange of expertise and experience on pedagogical methods • To encourage higher education institutions to broaden and enrich the range and content of courses they offer The teaching assignments may be carried out by teaching staff from higher education institutions or by invited staff from enterprises. In all cases, teachers undertaking a teaching assignment must be integrated into the department or faculty of the host institution. The partner higher education institutions must have agreed in advance on the programme of lectures to be delivered by the visiting teachers. Where the person carrying out the assignment is from a higher education institution, the assignment must be based on an inter-institutional agreement between the home and host institution. In regards to SMS (Student Mobility for Studies), under ERASMUS, Intercollege has student exchange agreements with various European countries from which to choose from. From your second year of study onwards, you can spend one or two semesters studying at one of the College’s partner institutions. The period abroad will be fully accredited towards your final degree and no fee from the host institution will be charged during your stay. 17 Administrative, Non-Teaching, and Teaching Staff for Training (STT) Within the broad objective of staff training this action encompasses the following types of mobility: • Mobility of teaching staff from a higher education institution to another higher education institution or to an enterprise, for the purpose of receiving training • Mobility of administrative and other non-teaching staff from a higher education institution to a partner higher education institution or an enterprise for the purpose of receiving training. The purpose is to allow the beneficiaries to learn by transfer of knowledge or know-how from the experiences and good practices of a partner institution or host enterprise and, thereby, to acquire practical skills relevant to their current job and their professional development. The activities can be varied: seminars, workshops, courses, periods of practical training, and others. Usually training visits under STT last between one to three weeks and transportation and living expenses are covered by Erasmus. The grant depends on host country and length of stay. 18 For more information, please contact: LIMASSOL The Erasmus Office Intercollege Limassol 92 Ayias Phylaxeos Street P.O. In order to succeed in this, the College aims at continuously upgrading its educational and other resources. The following facilities are for the use of all students: Computer Facilities The College has a distributed computing environment, to provide high speed connection to appropriate services and Internet through a number of high performance local area networks (LAN), using 1GB backbone built on copper and fiber optics cables. All computers in the labs are connected to the Local Area Network (LAN) sharing the services of 10 servers assigned for studies and students research. In addition, they are connected to the Internet with the summary bandwidth of over 20 Mbits/s. Wi-Fi network is also available in public areas. The computer facilities of the College cater to the needs of Information Communication and Technology students as well as to students of other programmes. The Computer Centre is equipped with the hardware needed to support teaching and research in areas of expertise within the college. There are four computer laboratories at Intercollege equipped with state-of- the art PC compatible computers, which are updated every two years; currently transferring from Windows XP Pro Operating System, Microsoft Office 2003 and Visual Studio.Net and Visual Studio.Net 2003 to Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 development tools. There is at least one network printer in each computer lab. Each College student is entitled to have a personal e-mail account (created automatically upon registration) and a WEB site if requested. Specialists manage the labs and during peak hours trained assistants are on duty. 19 Culinary Arts Facilities The College has fully equipped professional kitchen facilities that are used for practical cooking sessions and Restaurant Operations courses. Classes held in these facilities give students the opportunity to practice their skills in real life situations as they are exposed to the diverse aspects of food services such as: kitchen layout and design, menu planning, purchasing, issuing orders, preparation, storage, sanitation, stewarding, and dining room management. These facilities are also utilised for demonstrations conducted by executive chefs involved in the industry. The “Gallery Restaurant” is a professionally run 80-seat restaurant, adjacent to the professional kitchen. It is open to the public and, very often, serves as a venue for special functions. Of course, it is also geared towards serving faculty, staff, students and friends of the College, as well as businesses in the Nicosia district. Furthermore, the College has conference and meeting facilities supplemented by audio/visual equipment for training and for the provision of professional service during meetings and conferences. Students in the Culinary Arts department, therefore, have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in organising and servicing such events. During summer vacation periods, culinary arts students undertake paid employment in the thriving hotel industry of Cyprus, thus supplementing their education with additional hands-on experience in a most competitive environment. 20 Aesthetics Facilities The College has three fully equipped aesthetics facilities used for practical courses. Classes held in these facilities give students the opportunity to practice their skills in real salon settings. Students are exposed to all practical areas of the aesthetics profession such as: depilation, makeup, nail care, aromatherapy, theatrical makeup, electrolysis, facial treatment and body treatment. These facilities are also utilised for demonstrations conducted by experts in the field. The facilities serve as a venue for special functions and are geared towards providing beauty services to the College community and friends. Subsequently, students in the aesthetics department have the opportunity to gain real life experience in the profession. These state of the art facilities are used for lifelong learning courses for former Intercollege students and professionals. New techniques, equipment and treatments are regularly presented through these courses. 2 Cine Studio The College houses a cinema theatre on campus as part of its overall cultural contribution. Cine Studio is one of the best cinemas in town, with comfortable seats and state of the art film projector and stereo system. It shows quality films for students, faculty and staff (at low price) but is also open to the public at large. Besides regular shows, Cine Studio organises screenings of special interest films: works of highly regarded directors, film festivals originating from a particular country or genre, famous classics, and other. Bookshop The College bookshop is located in a new, modern spacious area in the basement of the Europa building. The bookshop provides students with textbooks and specialised material not readily available in local bookshops. Here students can also locate books of general interest, books published by Intercollege Press, as well as stationery or art materials for course work. There is a “used books” service available twice a year, at the end of the Fall and Spring Semesters. Student Cafeteria and Restaurant A student cafeteria is available on campus and is open during normal College hours. The cafeteria offers soft drinks, snacks, and recreational facilities. It is a congenial place for students to get acquainted and meet with faculty between and after classes. Very often such gatherings carry on into the College’s popular restaurant, open regularly during the semester; its menus are varied, tasty and reasonably priced. Gym Centre The gym centre is located on campus and open daily. It is free of charge to all Intercollege students, faculty and staff. The Sport Office is available to design personal fitness programmes and is responsible for instructing gym users on the proper use of all the exercise machines. Housing/Student Hostel The Department of Student Affairs assists students in finding suitable accommodation within reasonable distance from the College - a range of options are available, including a student hostel. The hostel has both single and double rooms, with shared kitchens, bathrooms, etc. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis; interested applicants are advised to reserve a room as far in advance as possible, through payments of a deposit (refundable on the day of departure). Reservations can be made immediately after the College has accepted a student by completing the relevant Accommodation Application form. Many students prefer to live in shared houses or flats rented privately. The Department of Student Affairs keeps a register of such accommodation and assists students in their search according to their preferred choice of accommodation. 21 LIBRARY INFORMATION CENTRE Nowadays, there is more to being a student than reading, and at College students need to do a lot of individual study. Part of this involves reading material assigned by lecturers, but most of it requires students to find information related to their studies choosing, reading, evaluating and bringing together information that they consider essential for their research. The library is a very important source for this work, and especially a library whose resources can be accessed on-line and from home. One of the advantages of studying at Intercollege is that students have access to the University of Nicosia Library and the services it offers. The libraries of Intercollege are linked to the University of Nicosia Library and students may remotely access its catalogue and order books which are not available in their Campus Library. The College Library Information Gateway on the World Wide Web www.library.unic.ac.cy is accessible from anywhere on campus and remotely. The Gateway gives access to local, national and international information sources including: • The on-line catalogue (InterCAT), which allows students to search the 90,000 books of the library collection by Author, Title or Subject. The system allows students to reserve material loaned out to other users, to view outstanding loans and to renew books from home. • Access is also given to a wide range of networked electronic sources relevant to the subject area of study, including online databases with thousands of journals, newspapers, subject gateways and helpful hints for faster and improved research. 22 In addition to the Main Collection, the library hosts the following Special Collections: • Reserve Collection - a short loan collection which allows essential course materials to circulate quickly. • And other collections such as: the Reference Collection, the Cyprus Collection, the Law Reference and Law Reports Collection - all relevant to the subject areas of study of the College. For materials not found in the College library or any other libraries on the island, there is an Interlibrary Loan Service provided through collaboration with The British Library Document Supply Centre, and the University of Utah. Photocopy facilities, TVs and tape recorders are available for materials not loaned out, as well as dedicated terminals with Super Nova - a programme for blind or visually impaired users. Finally, the library combines access of resources with a pleasant atmosphere for individual or group study. Both Internet and Wi-Fi access is available and the library staff is always on hand to assist students in their hunt for the relevant research material needed for their assignments. For more information visit the library website. 2 STUDENT AFFAIRS The Department of Student Affairs The Department aims to offer every possible assistance to students, not only during their studies at Intercollege, but also after they graduate. In addition to assisting students in finding suitable accommodation, organising the orientation day, and facilitating the various activities of the numerous social and sports clubs, the Department cooperates with lecturers, the Students’ Union and the Alumni Association to improve the quality of student life at the College. It also offers career advice to current as well as to former students. The Department of Student Affairs offers a wide range of services to Intercollege students. Student life is an integral part of college education as it offers students unique opportunities for personal growth, as well as for the development of leadership and communication skills. At the same time it provides opportunities for cooperation, teamwork, social interaction and intercultural understanding. Orientation New international students are expected to be on campus by the end of the second week of September if they wish to join the Fall Semester, by the end of the second week of January for the Spring Semester, and by the end of May for the Summer Session. The Department of Student Affairs will assist students in finding suitable accommodation before the beginning of the semester. During Orientation Day new students are addressed by the Campus Director and other Officers of the College and the Student Union. They also have an opportunity to meet with faculty, classmates, and College administration and get acquainted with student life in an institution of higher learning. Job Placement Services The Department of Student Affairs offers Job Placement Services to those College students and alumni who are permitted by law to take up employment. Applicants who register for such services establish a credentials file, including transcripts and recommendations. The Department of Student Affairs also maintains a list of job vacancies and assists students in job placement. Work shops are organised on writing a CV, identifying vacancies and attending job interviews. Career seminars and job fairs are also conducted, during which various companies present career prospects and opportunities to interested students. Student Representation in College Bodies The Student Union is at the heart of all College activities. The Student Union, which elects its own representatives, is represented in various student bodies and promotes the welfare, cultural and other interests of the students. Alumni Association All graduates of Intercollege automatically become life members of Intercollege Alumni (former student) Association. The College maintains contact with its graduates and former students in order to keep them informed of new academic and career opportunities, as well as to solicit their views on College matters. The Association organises several activities, thus enabling students to keep in touch after graduation, and acts as a forum for discussion of mutual problems or concerns. Clubs and Societies The Department of Student Affairs, in cooperation with the Students’ Union, assists with the organisation of various extra-curricular activities, clubs and societies of the College. Sport Intercollege maintains a lively athletics programme and has a Sports Officer on campus. 23 3 ACADEMIC POLICIES AND SUPPORT ACADEMIC POLICIES AND REGULATIONS The Academic Year The College academic year is divided into semesters. It consists of two main semesters (Fall and Spring) of 15 weeks duration, and two shorter, more intensive, Summer sessions. Each semester or session commences by students registering for a number of courses and ends with the examination weeks covering all of these courses. New students may start in September-October, January-February, June and July. The academic calendar provides information detailing important dates in the academic year, such as when semesters begin and end, registration periods, examination weeks and holidays. Academic Programmes, Majors, Courses and Credits Each student is enrolled in a programme of study such as Aesthetics and Beauty Therapy or Culinary Arts. Such programmes of study are referred to as majors. Each programme consists of different courses which must be completed in order for a student to graduate. Academic programmes lead to an academic qualification. In order to graduate from such a programme a minimum number of credits must be completed. Credits normally represent hours of instruction. Each course normally carries 3-6 credits/6-12 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), which usually means 3-4 hours (50 minutes each) of lectures per week for a semester (13 weeks). The credits students earn must conform to a specific pattern of distribution. This means that, in addition to their major requirements (i.e. the specialised courses that constitute the backbone of their programme), students are also required to earn credits from different groups of courses, such as: Written Expression, Computer Requirements, Liberal Arts, Social Sciences etc. These groups of courses from which credits must be earned are specified by the student’s programme of study and appear on his/her academic pathway. 26 The academic pathway - or sequence of courses each student must take each semester - is determined by the student’s degree requirements. This sequence is also determined by prerequisites (i.e. it may only be possible to take one course after other courses have been successfully completed). Classification of Students Student classification as freshman, sophomore, junior or senior depends upon the number of credits/ECTS successfully completed. Semester Course Load and Sequence of Courses The normal semester course load for regular full-time students is 15-18 credits/30-36 ECTS. Only students with a CPA of at least 3.3 may be normally permitted to exceed 18 credits/36 ECTS. Other students may be allowed to register for more than 18 credits/36 ECTS in exceptional cases (e.g. if they are repeating at least one course, which they had previously passed but are retaking in order to raise their grade, or if they require a few extra credit hours during the last semester in order to graduate). • Freshman: 0-25 credits/0-50 ECTS • Sophomore: 26-55 credits/51-110 ECTS • Junior: 56-85 credits/111-170 ECTS • Senior: 86 or more credits/171 or more ECTS • Graduate: Student pursuing a graduate degree Students on special Academic Admission may not register for more than 12 credits/24 ECTS. Student designations are as follows: Students are classified further according to the number of semester hours in which they are enrolled per semester. An undergraduate student is considered full-time if enrolled for at least 12 hours during a regular semester or 6 hours during the summer session. Enrolment for fewer hours is considered part-time. International students should note, however, that government regulations require them to enrol for at least 15 hours per week during a regular semester. A graduate student is considered full-time if he or she is enrolled in 9 credits/18 ECTS during a regular semester or 4 credits/8 ECTS during the summer session. 3 Assessment/Grading System At the end of each semester or session, final grades are mailed to all students at their permanent or mailing addresses and are recorded on their permanent academic record in the Department of Academic Affairs. Academic progress at Intercollege is evaluated on the 4.0 scale from A to F, as follows: PercentageLetter Grade Grade % Grade Points 93-100 A 4.0 90- 92 A- 3.7 87- 89 B+ 3.3 83- 86 B3.0 80- 82 B-2.7 77- 79 C+2.3 73- 76 C2.0 70- 72 C-1.7 67- 69 D+1.3 63- 66 D1.0 60- 62 D-0.7 10- 59 F0.0 The following are not used in computing a student’s grade point average, and the credit hours are not included in the earned hours: I Incomplete: Incomplete work, for reasons acceptable to the faculty member, must be made up within one month after the end of the semester, unless an extension of time is requested by the faculty member. If the work is not completed in the prescribed time, the faculty member will record zero marks in the particular exam or area of work. W Withdrawal: The grade “W” indicates withdrawal from the course before its completion, as explained in the withdrawal policy. AU Audit: The grade “AU” refers to courses students may register on for audit status. Regular fees and enrolment procedures are required but the student takes no exams, so no grades or credit are assigned. DE Deferred Grade: A grade may be deferred “DE” when the faculty member concerned has certain doubts regarding the student’s work or if the work to be completed will be submitted after a period of one month. The following are not used when computing a student’s grade point average, but the credit hours are included in the earned hours: Assessment Grades for courses are based upon final examinations, mid-term examinations, other tests, assignments, projects, class attendance and participation. Faculty members inform students of their grading policy at the beginning of each semester. Attendance Class attendance is considered an important part of the educational process at the College. Therefore, all students are expected to attend class regularly. Individual faculty members set the specific guidelines for attendance and penalties for excessive absences. Failure to attend class may result in administrative withdrawal from the class or failure in the course. P Pass: The grade “P” refers to credit awarded for a pass/fail course, or in student internships/practica. TR Transfer Credits: The grade “TR” refers to courses transferred from other colleges or universities. Grade Point Average (GPA) A student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) shows the average performance for the semester; it is determined by multiplying the number of credits of each course by the grade points earned for it, and dividing by the total number of semester credits. The student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CPA) is computed in the same way and includes courses taken in all the semesters. The record of a student’s progress is issued by the Registrar’s Office in the form of a transcript. 27 Student Standing and Academic Probation The level for good academic standing, probation and ineligibility depends on the student’s progression in his/her studies as follows: Number of Good Probation Ineligibility Quality Academic Hours Standing (1) (2)(3)(4) 24 - 44 45 - 74 75 -104 105 -134 1.3 and over 1.7 and over 1.85 and over 2.0 and over 1.00-1.299 1.30-1.699 1.70-1.849 1.85-1.999 A student is considered to be in good academic standing if he/she satisfies the criteria set in columns (1) and (2) above. Students may also be placed on academic probation because of excessive course withdrawals (Ws). Students with a CPA below the lower cut-off points, shown in column (4) become ineligible to continue their studies. In cases of extenuating circumstances, students may be allowed to continue their studies under certain provisions/conditions only after consultation with and approval of the Dean. Usually the student is given a definite study plan with performance objectives. If students fail to meet these objectives, they will be dismissed from the College without further notice. Students may also be dismissed because of continued course withdrawals. All students placed on academic probation will receive a letter informing them of their status and will be encouraged to increase their CPA. There will also be a warning advising students that if his/her CPA drops below the low end of each scale, he or she may be ineligible to re-register. Grade Petitions/Changes Students wishing to dispute their semester grades have up to one month after the announcement of results to request a second marking of their paper by completing a Grade Petition Form available at the Department of Academic Affairs. At the end of each academic year, students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CPA) below what is required for good academic standing will be placed on academic probation as shown in column (3) above. 28 less than 1.0 less than 1.3 less than 1.7 less than 1.85 3 STUDENTS’ RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Student Petitions College students have the privilege of submitting petitions requesting special permission for exemptions from regulations and policies. These petitions will be considered by the Campus Director in consultation with the appropriate faculty, Heads of Department and Programme Directors/ Coordinators. Student petitions are considered on an individual basis with attention being given to the student’s academic record and the reason for the request. Student Petition Forms are available from the Department of Academic Affairs. Dean’s List Any student who completes in a semester at least 12 credits/24 ECTS (excluding P/F courses) with a GPA of at least 3.7 is placed on the Dean’s Honour List for that semester. Students’ Rights College students have the right to: Students’ Responsibilities College students have the responsibility to: • Have representation on appropriate College committees, including: the College Council, the School and Department Councils, the Disciplinary Committee, the Administration Committee, and the Appeals Committee. • • Suggest courses to be offered. • Know regulations concerning academic, disciplinary and immigration matters. • Be familiar with the College calendar. • Know the role of the College administration. • Evaluate College faculty members and administration. • Express opinion in class concerning the subject matter and in keeping with the College’s statement on academic freedom. • Expect commitment from the College staff. • Submit petitions requesting: review of grades, review of courses, exemptions from academic regulations and review of decisions concerning disciplinary matters. • Expect commitment from the Student Union Executives. • Have the right of free speech and assembly, provided they are consistent with College regulations. Fully understand their academic paths. • Know the College rules and regulations and fulfil all their required obligations to the College. • Meet with their academic advisor periodically. • Promote the academic spirit amongst fellow students. • Fully complete all their obligations to the College (i.e. financial, return books to library, etc.). • Students with outstanding obligations will not be entitled to receive grades, transcripts or other documents from the College. • Have all regulations concerning students to be communicated to them in appropriate publications. 29 ACADEMIC FREEDOM Academic Integrity Breach of academic integrity, such as cheating and plagiarism, are considered disciplinary offences and will not be tolerated. Cheating of any kind is defined as dishonesty in connection with assignments or examinations; it applies to both giving and receiving unauthorised help. Plagiarism refers to presenting any work as one’s own when it has in fact been done by someone else, or copied from printed material without clear citing of the source. Faculty members of the College are therefore entitled to complete freedom in research and in the publication of the results subject to the performance of their academic duties as specified by the Faculty Manual. However, sponsored research or research for pecuniary return will be based upon an understanding with the authorities of the institution. If a faculty member or an administrator has reason to believe that cheating or plagiarism has taken place, he/she has the right to refer the offence to the Disciplinary Committee. Faculty members are able to discuss their subjects, under the principle of academic freedom, but should not introduce controversial material which has no relation to the subject. Disciplinary Committee The Disciplinary Committee considers any subject which relates to student discipline. Students who violate regulations of the College may be subject to expulsion, dismissal or suspension. Expulsion is permanent severance from the College. Dismissal is severance from the College for a specific period after which the permission of School/ Academic Dean may be obtained for re-admission. Suspension is severance for a specific period with automatic re-admission. Grievances concerning disciplinary proceedings and decisions may be referred to the Appeals Committee. 30 Academic Freedom Academic Freedom Statement The College believes that academic freedom should be safeguarded at all cost. For it is only through the free search for truth and the free expression of ideas that knowledge will advance. The faculty are members of a scholarly profession and officers of the institution. When they speak or write as citizens, they will be free from institutional censorship or discipline. Because, however, the public may judge their profession and their institution by their utterances, faculty members must at all times be accurate, exercise appropriate restraint, show respect for the opinions of others, and vividly demonstrate that they are not speaking on behalf of the institution. Faculty members who feel that their academic freedom has been infringed, may make a written request to the Academic Dean so that an investigation of their case can be made. The request should set forth in a clear and concise manner the events and circumstances upon which the charge is based. 3 REGISTRATION Registration Registration is a procedure required each semester and Summer session. During registration, students select courses according to their programme pathways, level of English and the constraints imposed by course prerequisites and core requirements. Students are given advice in their choice of courses by academic officers/advisors. Students who have outstanding financial or other obligations to the College (e.g. outstanding balances, books to library, etc.) are placed on the registration stoplist. Stoplisted students will have to obtain a clearance certificate before they are allowed to register. Late Registration All students should be properly registered for their courses during the designated registration period. Students registering late cannot be assured of availability in courses they wish to take and will be charged a late registration fee. It is also possible that some courses may be cancelled as a result of low enrolment, even prior to the end of late registration period. Any student who registers after the expiry of the late registration period will do so entirely at his/ her own risk. The student, not the faculty or the College, will be responsible for all homework, examinations, or other materials completed before student enrolment. Academic Advisors Academic advising plays an important part when a student registers and during a student’s career at Intercollege. Each student receives planning and academic advice from the academic advisor, Head of Department and the Programme Coordinator. The academic officer/advisor assists students in pre-registration and registration, and counsels them with regard to the schedule and degree requirements. The Head of Department and Programme Coordinators are the senior faculty members of each programme who also counsel students in their major area of specialisation. Add and Drop During the first two weeks of each regular semester and the first week of the Summer session(s), students are allowed to change the courses or class sections for which they registered. Students are stongly advised to consult with their academic advisor before adding/dropping a course. While every effort will be made to meet student needs, the College reserves the right to refuse changes in courses and sections both for educational and administrative reasons. A faculty member is under no obligation to give make-up exams or homework to a student who registers after the late registration period. Late registration after the normal two-week period requires consultation between the Programme Coordinator/Head of Department and Campus Director. 31 Cyprus: AN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION CENTRE Withdrawal Student Withdrawal After the end of the add/drop period, students are entitled to withdraw from the course(s) they are registered for, provided they complete a form available from the Department of Academic Affairs and submit it by the last day of classes. If students withdraw from a course, a “W” will be assigned for that particular subject in the progress report. Withdrawal from the College Students who wish to withdraw from the College must notify the Office of Academic Affairs in writing by either submitting a letter or filling a “Withdrawal Form”. Clearance from the Finance Office is also necessary. Students cannot withdraw from the College by merely not showing up to classes. If the withdrawal from the College is for a justifiable reason, a partial refund may be possible during the first four weeks of classes (see Financial Policy). Justifiable reason is deemed to be death, serious illness or military induction. Address Change Students should notify the Admissions Office and Immigration (International Students) when they change their personal data. 32 Undergraduate Placement Examinations Placement examinations are administered when necessary, in order to determine proficiency in required areas of competence: 1. English Placement Examination All students admitted under programmes that are taught in English are required to take the English Placement Test to determine each student’s level of English prior to registration. This will also determine the and courses and course load for which s/he may register. Students with a valid TOEFL score of 500 and above, or Computer-based TOEFL score of 173 and above, or Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score of 61 and above, or GCSE (or GCE) English Language “O” Level of “C” or above, or IELTS of 6.0 and above or Cambridge Exams (First Certificate with Grade B and above, as well as Proficiency with Grade C and above) who do not wish to take the test, will be automatically placed in Basic Writing (ENGL-100), which allows them to take a normal course load. Such students may, however, wish to take the test in order to be placed at a level higher than Basic Writing. 2. Mathematics Placement Examination Students whose academic pathway requires Mathematics may take a Mathematics Placement Examination in order to be placed in more advanced mathematics courses. Specifically, those students who wish to be placed into Finite Mathematics (MATH- 150) or Statistics (MATH-220) or Calculus and Analytical Geometry (MATH-190) may take the Mathematics Placement Exami- nation, otherwise they will commence their Mathematics requirements with College Algebra (MATH-160) or other appropriate course. 3 Confidentiality of Student Records Students have the right to review, inspect, and challenge the accuracy of information kept in a cumulative file by the institution, unless the student waives this right. This also ensures that records cannot be released, other than in emergency situations without the written consent of the student, except in the following situations: 1. To appropriate school officials and faculty, under the supervision of the Registrar or Senior Registration Officer. 2. To potential employers (provided the student authorises the College to do so) or colleges and universities which the student intends to transfer to, upon condition that the student is notified of the transfer, receives a copy of the record if desired, and has an opportunity for a hearing to challenge the content of the record. 3. To authorised representatives of the legitimate government agencies in Cyprus. 4. To a student’s financial sponsor. 5. Where the information is classified as directory information. The following categories of information have been designated by the College as directory information: student’s name, address, telephone listing, major programme of study, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, the most recent educational institution attended by the student, enrolment status (full or parttime), place and date of birth, date of admission, date of graduation, whether or not currently enrolled, classification (freshman, etc.), and whether the student has participated in officially recognised activities and sports sponsored by the College. 33 AWARDS AND GRADUATION Academic Awards Intercollege offers academic awards at the Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor and Master Degree levels as follows: Undergraduate Awards Certificate This is awarded in selected programmes and represents at least 30 credits. No minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) is required. The student must, however, complete all necessary programme requirements. Diploma The Diploma is awarded in all areas and reflects that a student has completed at least 63 credits (usual range 63-75 credits). For some programmes, practical training is required. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 1.70 is required for a Diploma; a CPA between 3.00-3.49 leads to Diploma with Merit, and a CPA between 3.50-4.00 to a Diploma with Distinction. There is no minimum CPA requirement for Diplomas in vocational programmes, such as Culinary Arts, Aesthetics and Beauty Therapy and Office Administration. The student must complete all programme requirements. Higher Diploma A Higher Diploma is awarded in some areas after completion of at least 90 credits. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. The student must complete all programme requirements. 34 Bachelor Degree of (Arts or Science) This is the same as a Baccalaureate degree at the BA or BS level awarded in both the UK and USA. It is awarded in several areas after completion of at least 126 credits/240 ECTS. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. The student must complete all programme requirements. A student who has completed the Bachelor Degree requirements of a programme (P1) and has completed 30 credits/60 ECTS from the Major Requirements of another Bachelor Degree programme (P2), where P2 is not a joint Major Degree (e.g. Hotel & Tourism Management, Computer Engineering) is deemed to have completed the Minor Requirements of programme P2. This is recorded on the transcript of the student as Bachelor Degree in P1 with minor in P 2. Notes: 1. A student can choose only one minor. 2. Depending on the student’s entry level of English and the programme P1 requirements, a student may be required to complete additional credits over and above the P1 requirements (126/136)in order to be able to satisfy the Minor requirements. 3 Graduation In order to graduate a student is required to: 1. Complete all programme requirements. 2. Maintain an average CPA of at least 2.0 for the degree and 1.70 for the Diploma. 3. Meet all financial and other contractual obligations to the College. Graduate Awards (Master Degrees) The graduate degrees are post Bachelor degree academic qualifications and require substantial course work including projects in specialised areas. Course work in the range of 30-48 credits would be required, according to particular programme requirements. All requirements for the specific degree programme and major must be completed. Second Degree Requirements Students seeking a second diploma/degree must complete the requirements of the second diploma/ degree with a minimum of 15 additional credits for the Diploma and a minimum of 30 additional credits for the Bachelor degree subsequent to completion of the first diploma/degree. The fulfilment of Degree, Diploma and Certificate requirements is acknowledged after the end of the Spring semester, during the Graduation Ceremony. A student who meets the above graduation requirements during a semester prior to the Spring Semester may obtain his/her Degree, Diploma or Certificate in advance of the ceremony. Students who complete their course requirements during the Summer Semester, following the Spring Semester in which the graduation ceremony is held, may still attend the graduation ceremony provided they do not have more than 9 outstanding credits for completion of the degree. The final degree will only be awarded if all requirements have been successfully completed. (It is therefore important for students to understand that participating in the Graduation ceremony does not imply that the requirements of a programme have been fulfilled). Graduation Honours List Academic honours are awarded at graduation as follows: Summa Cum Laude - is awarded to any student who achieves a grade cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 3.7 or higher. Cum Laude - is awarded to any student who achieves a cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 3.5 or higher but less than 3.7. Best Student - the student achieving the highest CPA of the graduating class in each programme each year. The College students are mainly from Cyprus but also from many parts of the world, blending a diverse range of academic backgrounds, experiences, special interests, talents and cultural heritage. Admission to the College is granted under different categories depending on the student’s qualifications and educational objectives. The College’s admissions policy relies on the student’s past record, primarily high school grades. Evidence of Proficiency in English English is the language of instruction at Intercollege. Proficiency in English is required for all degree programmes taught in English and all applicants are required to take the College English Placement Test (EPT) before registration. Students who do not meet minimum standards are required to take preparatory English classes according to their results before they can join their academic programmes. Applicants with a valid TOEFL score of 500 and above, or Computer-based TOEFL score of 173 and above, or Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score of 61 and above, or GCSE (or GCE) English Language “O” Level of “C” or above, or IELTS of 6.0 and above or Cambridge Exams (First Certificate with Grade B and above, as well as Proficiency with Grade C and above) may take the test but will not be placed below College-level English. This permits registration for a normal course load. For programmes taught in Greek, students may be required to take a Greek Placement Test. 42 Undergraduate Admission Requirements The general admission requirement is for applicants to have a High School Leaving Certificate (i.e. 12 years of education or 11 depending on the country of origin, e.g. Russia) OR equivalent qualifications. Some programmes may have additional requirements in which case they are specified separately under the relevant programme details. At the undergraduate level, admission categories are as follows: 1. Regular Academic Admission: Regular admission to academic programmes requires a recognised High School Leaving Certificate with a grade of 7.5 out of 10 or 15 out of 20 or a rank in the top 50% or equivalent qualifications. This status may be contingent upon demonstrating proficiency in English with a valid TOEFL score of 500 and above, or Computer-based TOEFL score of 173 and above, or Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) score of 61 and above, or GCSE (or GCE) English Language “O” Level of “C” or above, or IELTS of 6.0 and above or Cambridge Exams (First Certificate with Grade B and above, as well as Proficiency with Grade C and above), or the College English Placement Test. Advanced standing will be admitted on the basis of additional qualifications (e.g. GCE “A” Level). Students applying for the Education programmes, taught in Greek, who do not meet regular academic admission requirements will be assessed to determine if their level of Greek meets entry standards before being granted admission. 2. Special Academic Admission: This category of admission may be offered to students who possess a High School Leaving Certificate but who do not have the stipulated grades or other requirements for regular admission. Such students may be eligible for special admission if they have relevant practical experience, or other records of achievement, or show evidence of ability to benefit from College education. Special admission students may take regular credits but load limits may apply until the time they establish their eligibility for regular admission. Special admission is offered to students with a low ability and with special needs. Transfer of Credits Transfer credits are credits earned at other accredited colleges and universities, which are transferable to the College. All courses are evaluated individually, based on the College standards and the student’s grades. The general philosophy governing transfer credits is that a student’s knowledge, no matter how it was gained, can be considered as long as it is relevant and can be documented. Thus, credits may be transferred to the student’s record from a variety of sources. Where the credits duplicate, credits will transfer from only one source. Transfer credits may correspond to specific College courses or may apply as credits in specific categories (computer, mathematics, humanities or social science electives). In all cases, they appear on the student’s transcript with the suffix “TR”; these grades are not considered when calculating the student’s CPA. Regardless of the credits transferred, students normally have to complete a minimum of 15 credits/30 ECTS for the Diploma, 30 credits/60 ECTS for the Bachelor degree and two thirds of the Master Degree credits/ECTS. 4 Credit Earned at Other Colleges and Universities Credits earned at other accredited colleges and universities or in accredited programmes are transferable to Intercollege. An official transcript is required. Course descriptions, syllabi and textbooks used may be required to determine the subject covered. Courses are normally evaluated individually. In some cases, validation may be required in the form of oral or written examinations. Transfer credits may be provisional, and students may be placed on probation. The Registrar carries out this evaluation in consultation with Department Heads and School Deans. The College will also accept formal evaluations by the World Education Service or other authorised evaluation services for work completed at colleges and universities around the world. Also, Intercollege may sign articulation agreements for the mutual transfer of credits with other colleges and universities. Credit by Exchange (Erasmus) The College awards credits to students who study abroad for one semester or one year under the LLP/ERASMUS programme. The study period is an integral part of the student’s programme of study and full academic recognition is given as decided in the Learning Agreement. A grade of “P” (pass) is recorded, which is not included in the computation of the GPA or CPA. Credit from National Testing and Professional Examining Bodies The College accepts credits from the following national testing programmes: • • American College Testing - Proficiency Examination Programme (PEP). College Board - Advanced Placement (AP) Programme. • Educational Testing Service - College Level Examination Programme (CLEP). • General Certificate of Education (GCE) - Advanced (“A”) Level and selected (“O”) level and IGCSE. Credit may also be earned from the examinations of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), the Alliance Francaise, the Goethe Institute, Associate Board of the Royal School of Music, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other professional bodies such as the ACCA, CAT, AAT, CIB, CIM, CAM, and ABE. This list is not exhaustive and other similar examinations may be accepted for transfer. Credit from Correspondence and Distance Learning Students are permitted to transfer credits from correspondence, distance learning or web-based learning from accredited colleges and universities. Individual schools and departments decide on the credits awarded for specific courses. Credit from Prior Learning It is possible to earn credit from life or work experience, business or industrial training programmes and other achievements. A portfolio must be submitted documenting the learning done outside of formal college courses. Credit is given for the learning or achievements that have come from experience, not the experience itself. Students must demonstrate a balance between theory and practice. Graduate Admission The minimum requirement for admission into a graduate degree programme is a Bachelor’s Degree (i.e. American, European, or equivalent). Students will be required to submit, besides their degree certificate, a transcript with the grades of all courses taken at the first degree level and two reference letters. Special requirements exist for different departments. Credit by Examination The College may also award credits on the basis of its own specially designed examinations in a number of courses. Students wishing to earn credits by examination must apply in writing and must provide evidence that they have covered the relevant material. Placement tests in English or Mathematics do not qualify for credit by examination at lower levels. Credit by examination grades are given based on the numerical mark of the exam paper, according to the College marking scheme. The grade appears on the student’s transcript and the hours are included in the earned hours. 43 ADMISSION PROCEDURES When to Apply The College calendar is arranged so that students may start in September, January or June. In July, students can only register for English foundation courses. You should submit your application at least three months before the beginning of classes.
