KOINONIA NOVEMBER¡O∂ªμƒπO™ 2014 Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter WHY ARE WE SUBSTITUTING OUR FAITH IN CHRIST FOR POWER AND MATERIALISTIC NEEDS? I have always loved this verse in (Matthew: 16:26) that states; “What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? I have been waiting to write about this topic because it relates to the fact that we Christians would rather accept fame, wealth, leisure, power, and materialistic needs, than to focus on our spiritual life which will lead us to eternal life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Many in this fallen world of ours have throughout history exchanged our true loving God in Heaven for this false god of materialism. Accepting materialism as our way of life can lead us to many other sinful natures, such as greed, vain glory, lust, pride and envy to name of few, which quite often are also signs of worldly success. Someone asked me this question: “How can we live a life according to our spiritual values while living in a materialistic world?” This is a very good question which reflects to the subject that we are focusing upon in this article. First we have to understand the words which Christ spoke when He mentioned in (Matthew 16:26) “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul.” The hard part about spirituality is putting it into practice in the real world. We can read about it in books, attend Church regularly, hear the sermons, attend workshops and even meditate about life, but what really counts are the choices we make. Our decisions are driven by our values and beliefs about the world. So what God wants us to do, IS TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS AND THEN FOLLOW HIM? Christ presented Himself to His Disciples and He asked them to follow Him. So the so called fishermen had to make a quick decision; “DO WE FOLLOW HIM OR DO WE GO ON OUR WAY AND LEAD OUR LIVES THE WAY WE WANT TOO”. So it comes down to this? “What decision are we going to make, do we follow Christ or do we deny Him”. In actuality do we really want to follow Christ into His Kingdom, or do we want to follow the rules and ways of the world. Now, if we follow the road to the Kingdom then we will gain eternal life. If we follow the ways of the world then we gain nothing and we end up with false dreams and false promises. As we grow and experience the world we form a set of beliefs and values about our faith in God, the world and our part in it. These are the values that are going to determine whether we gain our soul with Christ or lose our soul to the world. If we take Holy Scripture, it does point to economics in everyday living. Its main theme is that the blessings of our Lord has given us should be utilized for His purpose including our spiritual prosperity and not for the objectives of worldly abundance. Our Lord never intended for us to view possessions in the materialistic way we do today. In short, it’s not wealth in itself that is sinful, but our attachment to it. In all, we have to define in our lives, “What is the ultimate goal”. What do we want to accomplish, and which road do we wish to follow. This statement says it all, but I also would like to add that reaching the plateau of Heaven, is like climbing up a huge mountain to reach the peak. The climb is not easy; along the path you will experience rough terrains. You will fall into traps of distortions, addictions, drugs, gambling, over eating, and working long hours, marital problems, and financial problems. These are just some of the obstacles that we will face on our journey to the kingdom of Heaven. There is no easy answer as to what is the right way to live our lives, but knowing that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ gave His life to save mine and yours, that gives me the opportunity and the freedom to choose Him as my Savior. In fact, I would rather live a humble Christian life on this earth and gain the entrance of the Kingdom through God’s Grace, than gain the wealth of this world with everything that comes with it, than to lose my soul. Everlasting life means more to me than Everlasting damnation. I made my choice. Now you have to make yours. As stated in Psalm 118:1, “God is good. Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His loving kindness is everlasting.” God’s loving kindness is everlasting and we see it every day in the work of our dedicated volunteers. The volunteers of our community are the heart of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and I am truly grateful for their dedication and willingness to give of their time, talent and treasure. I am equally grateful to the Stewards who give their stewardship faithfully each year to the church and to the Stewards who exercise their voting privileges by attending each General Assembly meeting. On October 12, 2014, we held our Fall General Assembly and I am pleased to report that the parishioners approved the replacement of the roofs over the atrium, church office and Greek School/gym. Years of neglect have taken its toll and this project could no longer be ignored. Also, the Parish Council Treasurer, Popi Paragios, gave a thorough report regarding the church finances. The Plateia is still running in the red, but our losses have been significantly reduced as bookings have increased. Again, parishioners have come forward to volunteer for the Plateia Building Committee and are already making strides to improve the Plateia ‘s profitability. Thanks have to be given to Frank Mitsos and Steve Tsakalos who have continually volunteered their time and talent to the management of the Plateia. We are always looking for more parishioners to lend their talents to the church. Looking forward, the church is celebrating its 60th Anniversary by sponsoring a Grand Banquet on December 6, 2014 at Martin’s East. This anniversary deserves to be celebrated since during these tough economic times, many churches of numerous dominations have closed their doors. Let us all celebrate this anniversary and come together at this event as one family, united under God and our beloved Saint Nicholas Church. Join me in expressing our gratitude to the faithful who have worked tirelessly to keep Saint Nicholas Church vibrant during the past sixty years. In closing, this is such an amazing congregation and it has been such a blessing to be your Parish Council President. I am continually humbled by your compassion, generosity and willingness to serve. I can only hope that I have inspired all of you as much as you have inspired me. Thank you so much for all that you do and I wish everyone a wonderful prayerful Thanksgiving with God amongst your family and friends. Thank you and God Bless. In Christ, Demos Anastasiades, Parish Council President KOINONIA DEADLINE Please submit your article(s) to the Koinonia staff by the deadline stated below. Athas Memorial Golf Tournament at the Mountain Branch Golf Course in Fallston, Maryland. All proceeds generated by the tournament go back to the Greek community in the form of scholarships presented by the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund to well deserving students. Close to 100 golfers of all talent levels came out on a great summer day to support the tournament and also as tournament director Deno Yenias remarked “to remember a true gentleman and scholar.” Highlights of the day’s events include a hole-in-one contest, long drive competitions, and awards ceremony. George Athas, son of Michael, presented the first place trophy on behalf of his father and noted, “how humble dad would be” if he knew a tournament was being held in his memory. The Lord Baltimore Chapter extends their sincere appreciation to all golfers, sponsors and staff at Mountain Branch for making this a successful event. We hope to see everyone again in 2015. We could not have pulled it off for the 2nd time in six months without all of the help and support of all our good families. Our GOYANs represented St. Nicholas Church with such respect and pride. As a parent and advisor, I could not have been more happier and proud of them. New Parents, WELCOME ABOARD! We started out the year with a Big Bang!!! Don’t worry, the hardest part of the year is over.....it should be smooth sailing from this point on. I truly believe that we gained a great group of new families. You all helped us out with open arms and we are very appreciative of that. With your help, support, and dedication in taking your kids to and from practices, the donations, and all the setting up, you helped to make it possible. To our advisors, I really cannot express how much each of you mean to our GOYA organization. There is no way that we could have hosted that amazing weekend without our six minds working together every day and night, at work, during work, after work, and whenever needed. UNBELIEVABLE TEAM! We had some doubts at times, but with ambition, dedication, and “FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME”, we did it! Coaches, I think that you have one of the hardest jobs in this ministry. Aside from your daily jobs, you also set aside time to coach our children. You have so many different personalities to work with, and without all of our wonderful coaches, our children would not be able to create these memories and friendship that will last a lifetime. They will always remember that you were there for them. President Demo, tournament number 3 with us. I think that the St. Nicholas Church is very lucky to have elected a President like you. You are always there for us no matter how crazy things get. Your endless time and dedication to our church, has made me realize how much a little time from everyone’s schedule can help make a big difference to our church and ministries. Father Michael, you are always there to give your time and guidance when needed. It is very nice to see your presences not only at our tournament, but at every tournament home or away. It is very humbling having our spiritual leader around when our children are involved. You make sure that they become as successful as possible. Not only the GOYANs, but your entire parish. It means a lot to all of us when we see your presence at all of our functions. Congratulations to our girls A team and boys B team for winning 1st place championship and boys A team for coming in 2nd place. The AlI Stars for those teams were Jenna Stakia, girls A team, Herk boys B Team, & Antoni Araviakis boys A team. MVP’s were Sia Barnes girls A team, and Nick Argetakis boys B team. A successful tournament weekend just proved to us that we can all work together and make the impossible possible! Again, I feel like I cannot say it enough THANK YOU all so much for all the hard work. Because of the strong opposition, the former bar has withdrawn the appeal for its commercial property designation and the appeal to the liquor board for a liquor license. The property will be designated residential. The Greektown CDC initiated the project with the City’s to create additional parking in the community. Reverse angle parking has been accomplished on the eastside of Oldham Street from O’Donnell Street to Eastern Avenue. This project received overwhelming community support. A follow up meeting on the Pemco property was held September 23, 2014. The developers had very little new information to offer. As such we are withholding making a recommendation to the City. As new information becomes available we will report to the community. The City of Baltimore has partnered with Home Service USA to make emergency repairs to your underground sewer and water lines. For more information call DPW Community Affairs at 410-545-6541 or visit Baltimoreservicerepairs.com We would like to thank all of the residents that participated in our Fall Mayor’s Cleanup on October 25, 2014. It really makes a differ- ence when the neighbors work together to keep our community clean. The Greektown CDC has been working diligently to address the serious illegal dumping that had occurred in the 100 block of Oldham and the 4700-4900 block of Hudson Street. The areas have been cleaned up by the City, however we need your help in calling 311 as soon illegal dumping is observed. The City has been very responsive to our office, but they ask that the residents also get involved in calling in violations. You may also call 311 or submit online at www.baltimorecity.gov use the “request service” icon for non-emergencies and to request City services (trash, zoning, liquor board, etc.). Dial 911 for any criminal activity. The Greektown CDC Board of Directors and Staff wish the St. Nicholas Church much success in the upcoming celebration of the church’s 60th Anniversary. The path to this communion has been precisely defined: faith, and walking in the Commandments with the help of God’s grace. Saint Theophan the Recluse While it is true that the Orthodox way of life is not the normal way of life for most people in our society, it is a most practical life for married people with families faced with the challenges of careers. In fact, it is the way of living that will make your life less stressful and more meaningful. The Orthodox Way of Life is NOT a monastic way of life. Even though monasticism was part of the early church, we are not required to live this most honored lifestyle. Only a few are called to this style of life. We do, however, have the same goals. Like the monks we seek holiness and union with God, but we are called to live in the world with our families. The principles of our spiritual growth are the same no matter which path we chose. Most of us never take the time to reflect on the purpose of our lives. Often we don’t do this until someone we love departs from this life unexpectedly. During this moment of grief, our soul has our attention and we begin to think about what life is all about. In one way, life is about death. We all know this is where we are headed, but we too often refuse to think about this seriously because of the unknown and the fear it presents. The purpose of life taught by the Apostles and the Church Fathers is one of finding union with God. Jesus came to save us and to open the gates of heaven for us. He showed us how to live through His teaching and example. He showed us that we have nothing to fear in death. To begin, you must have faith in God and accept His love for you. With a little faith, you can begin to live the Orthodox way of life through our journey of the ten point program. This way of life is given to us by Christ Himself through His Church. It is a proven way of life that WILL bring you closer to God. As you come closer to God, you increase your capability to deal with any difficulty you may face. You increase your ability to live according to the virtues. During the next ten months, the Stewardship Committee will present the ten point program to help each of us find union with God. We will be discussing the following: Prayer, Worship, Liturgical Cycle. Jesus Prayer, Slowing Down, Watchfulness, Taming Passions, Putting Others First, Spiritual Fellowship, Reading Scriptures and Holy Father. If you follow these ten point, it will led you to everything you need to know. Study each one of them with us and examine your current life. Then seek ways to make the necessary changes in your life to incorporate them. Always pray for God’s help in this.
