In the next Solar Decathlon, “RhOME” the
italian way for a 100% green house.
The prototype of the university of Roma Tre is the only italian project
among the 20 selected.
Rome, May 28, 2014 – July, 15 2014 RhOME for denCity, the only Italian team among the 20 admitted to
the Solar Decathlon Europe, will depart for France to build RhOME, a prototype of a highly sustainable
home developed over two years of intensive work, which will be open to the public starting from
June 28, 2014 at Versailles.
The Solar Decathlon is a competition founded in 2002 on the initiative of the Department of Energy
of the United States. It is open to Universities all over the world who are called to design and build a
perfectly functional house that is fully powered by solar energy.
Since 2010, the competition was initially housed on U.S. soil, then it took place in Europe (Solar
Decathlon Europe 2010, Spain) and in 2011 in China.
This year’s challenge will take place in the Cite du Soleil, a temporary zero impact micro-city set up in
Versailles, close to what was once the residence of Louis XIV, the Sun King, which will be open to the
public from 28 June to 12 July 2014.
The RhOME for denCity team, composed by students and teachers of the University of Roma Tre led
by the architect Chiara Tonelli, starting from the competition’s keywords to create the project RhOME:
density / mobility /sobriety / innovation / affordability /contextualization

With the slogan a home for ROME, its intent is to solve some of the problems in the outskirts of Rome
through social housing and forms of coworking for the nomadworkers of today: singles, divorced,
elderly, couples, single parents. It represent a snapshot which is far more faithful to the context of
today’s society that not the extended Mediterranean family.
Solutions for the treatment of waste, limits to the use of active technologies, and low mobility for
everyone with low CO2 content are some of the themes that accompany the recovery of pre-existing
archaeological remains and the Roman countryside.

A project that can respond positively to the problems of contemporary cities: world population
growth, urban overcrowding, energy consumption in houses in order to maintain comfort levels to
which contemporary society has become accustomed to, all these problems are putting a strain on the
resources of the planet and the challenge of future generations will be to return to live in harmony with
the planet earth.
Challenge accepted by the University of Roma Tre already in the Solar Decathlon 2012, in which the
team with the project MED in Italy won the 3rd place in the overall standings.
The prototype that will compete in the race this year is an extract from the top floor apartment of an
urban building, it is a home for three people and it will be built in just 8 days by the same
students in the team.
It’s a house of about 60m2 which winds around a central core of facilities and services, and
is characterized by two large loggias to the north and south that favor the triggering of a natural
ventilation and allow you to live in the house as the Mediterranean tradition: outdoor spaces are an
added value, a gathering place.
The interior spaces, thanks to the shape of the built environment and design solutions, are flexible
and fit the needs of the family.
The energy production plants and hygrometric control and air quality control cooperate with
each other requiring little energy.
The integrated photovoltaic platform roof, formed by flexible panels used in marine, in addition to
producing energy, acts as a shield in sunnier periods.
The prefab technology in wood allows rapid implementation of certain costs also during the
construction phase, minimizing unexpected costs using only environmentally friendly material: wood.
In recent months, the prototype of RhOME has been engineered and built in Chienes, in the province
of Bolzano, in the headquarters of the Rubner Group, partners in the project company, specialized in
the construction of wooden houses.
The prototype is in the disassembly phase, so as to allow transport by train (which will save 93%
CO2 compared to road transport) to the Citè du Soleil in Versailles, Paris to compete in ten trials just like
a true Olympiad of sustainability, against Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Japan,
Mexico, Netherlands, Romania, United States ,Switzerland, Thailand, Taiwan.
From the 28th of June, the Cité du Soleil will be open to the public to visit the houses that will take part
in the competition.
