Cette situation géographique d’exception offre un panorama remarquable sur le littoral méditerranéen
du Cap Ferrat à l’Italie. Les origines
de la ville remontent à l’antiquité
et sont liées à celles de La Turbie,
comme en témoignent les vestiges
du monument historique de l’Oppidum du Mont des Mules.

BEAUSOLEIL A BALCONY OVERLOOKING THE
MEDITERRANEAN
Beausoleil is a tourist resort on the Côte d’Azur, a town bedecked in bright flowers in a lush unspoilt
setting, situated in an amphitheatre above the Principality of Monaco, at an altitude of between 40
and 560m.
This excellent geographical location offers a fantastic view of the Mediterranean coast from Cap
Ferrat to Italy. The town’s origins can be traced back to ancient times and are linked to those of La
Turbie, as shown by the remains of the Oppidum listed as a historic monument at Mont des Mules.
But it was with the birth of Monte-Carlo that Beausoleil was to prosper, created on 10th April 1904.
The town then experienced significant growth both demographically and economically, with its two
casinos and its rack railway. Winter tourism reached a peak with non-stop parties, sumptuous banquets and the eccentricities of a European aristocracy and the English and American upper classes.
This “Belle Epoque” (1870-1920) smiled upon the arts while developing the technological advances
which were to bring the comfort and well-being sought by the demanding clientele.
The name Beausoleil was dreamt up to promote tourism there but
actually reflects the truth as it has around 300 days of sunshine per
year and a mild climate.

Beausoleil è una stazione turistica della Costa Azzurra, una città
fiorita in mezzo alla vegetazione che si estende ad anfiteatro sul
Principato di Monaco, tra 40 e 560 m di altitudine.
Questa straordinaria posizione geografica offre un bellissimo panorama sul litorale mediterraneo da Cap Ferrat all’Italia. Le origini
della città risalgono all’antichità e sono legate a quelle di La Turbie,
come dimostrano i resti del monumento storico dell’Oppido di Mont
des Mules.
Ma è con la nascita di Montecarlo che prospera Beausoleil, sorta
il 10 aprile 1904.
Da allora il comune ha conosciuto un grande sviluppo sul piano demografico ed economico, con due casinò e il treno a cremagliera.

PAR EXCELLENCE.
Les façades richement ornées, avec des bow-windows, des encorbellements,
de magnifiques balcons à balustres ou en fer forgé travaillé, ont conservé
leur couleur originelle. Au détour d’un des immeubles stylés des années 30,
parfois art-déco, un escalier vous mènera en quelques marches, dans une
venelle, un passage discret.
Vous découvrirez alors un habitat plus populaire, décoré de frises sous la
toiture surnommées parfois « art du pauvre » qui acquièrent leurs lettres
de noblesse lorsqu’elles ornent les maisons bourgeoises entourées de
jardins d’agrumes. Ces quartiers d’authenticité vous imprègneront d’une
atmosphère méridionale.
UNE ARCHITECTURE BELLE ÉPOQUE
En 1898, tandis que Camille Blanc préside la Société des Bains de Mer, la
Compagnie Internationale de Grands Hôtels et Wagons-lits entreprend
la construction du très luxueux hôtel Riviera Palace, d’après les plans
de l’architecte Georges Chedanne Grand Prix de Rome en 1887, et maître
d’œuvre du fastueux et très classique Palace Hôtel, avenue des Champs
Elysées et de l’extravagant Hôtel Mercedes, 9 rue de Presbourg à Paris.
Le Riviera Palace, déroule son élégante façade, exposée plein sud, simple
surface rythmée de nombreuses fenêtres, bow-windows, encorbellements,
balcons à balustres de poterie. Sa construction, en béton enduit de stuc, est
terminée en 1903.

Nées de la vogue des savants botanistes du
XVIIIème siècle et du développement de l’industrie
du fer et du verre au XIXème siècle, les serresjardins sont de véritables joyaux. Construit sur
deux niveaux, le jardin d’hiver du Riviera Palace,
exceptionnel par son ampleur, plus de 900 m2, et
20 m de hauteur, associe, dans une perspective
très aérienne, galerie et rotonde, voûte ogivale et
dôme, murailles de pierre, de verre et de rochers.

Au début du XXème siècle, lieu magique, véritable
paquebot hôtelier, le Riviera Palace, à 180 m audessus de la mer, accueille avec le prestigieux

somptueuses fêtes sont données. Il devient aussitôt
un pôle de villégiature et de mondanités très attractif.
C’est « une louange de la beauté italienne du site,

la française ». Le bâtiment est inscrit aux monuments
historiques depuis le 14 décembre 1989.

THE WINTER GARDEN AND ITS
MAGNIFICENT GLASS DOME
The ornately decorated façades with their
bow-windows, corbels and magnificent
balconies with balustrades or wrought
ironwork, have retained their original
colour. Just a few steps away, around the
corner of one of the buildings with 30s style
or sometimes art deco architecture, a flight
of steps will take you into an alleyway or
unobtrusive passageway.
You’ll then discover more ordinary housing,
decorated with friezes under the roof
sometimes known as “art du pauvre”
(poor man’s art) which were to acquire
a cachet when they decorated bourgeois
homes surrounded by citrus groves. These
authentic neighbourhoods will immerse you
in the atmosphere of Southern France.

In 1898, whilst Camille Blanc was President
of the Société des Bains de Mer, the
Compagnie Internationale de Grands Hôtels
et Wagons-lits started building the Riviera
Palace Hotel, the height of luxury, following
plans drawn up by architect Georges
Chedanne. He was winner of the Grand Prix
de Rome in 1887, and project manager of
the lavish and highly classical Palace Hotel
on the Avenue des Champs Elysées and
the extravagant Hôtel Mercedes, 9, Rue de
Presbourg in Paris.
The Riviera Palace, built of concrete with a
stucco finish, has an elegant south-facing
facade, a plain surface featuring a large
number of windows, bow-windows, corbels

Created through the popularity of
18th century botany scholars and the
development of the iron and glass industry
in the 19th century, the greenhouse
gardens are real gems. Built on two
levels, the Riviera Palace Winter Garden is
exceptionally large at over 900m2, and 20m
in height, and from an aerial perspective
combines a gallery and rotunda, a gothic
vault and dome, and walls made of stone,
glass and rock.
HOLIDAY RESORT AND
SOCIETY LIFE
At the beginning of the 20th century, the
Riviera Palace, like a magical liner cruising
180 m above sea-level, played host to a rich
clientele from Russia, Austria-Hungary
and then England in whose honour lavish
parties were held, as did the prestigious
Hôtel de Paris. It immediately became a
holiday hotspot and magnet for society
life. It was “praise for the building’s Italian
beauty, combined with the sophisticated
art of French hospitality.” The building has
been listed as a Historic Monument since
14th December 1989.

Gli appassionati della Belle Époque saranno
affascinati da Beausoleil. Attraversando
il quartiere storico del centro, in Bd de
la République, o accompagnati da una
guida dell’Ufficio del Turismo, avranno la
possibilità di ammirare un’architettura
“Belle Époque” (1870-1920) esemplare.
Qui tutto ha conservato il colore originale :
le facciate riccamente ornate con finestre
a bovindo, gli sbalzi, i magnifici balconi a
balaustra o in ferro forgiato e lavorato. Non
lontano da uno degli edifici in stile anni
’30, una breve scalinata vi condurrà in una
vicolo, in un passaggio discreto.
Scoprirete così un ambiente più popolare,
decorato da fregi che spesso vanno sotto il
nome di “arte povera” ma che acquisiscono
tutta la loro nobiltà quando abbelliscono
le case borghesi circondate da agrumeti.
Questi quartieri tipici ed autentici vi
immergeranno nell’atmosfera del sud della
Francia.

UN’ARCHITETTURA BELLE
ÉPOQUE
Nel 1898, mentre Camille Blanc presiedeva
la Société des Bains de Mer, la Compagnie
Internationale de Grands Hôtels et
Wagons-lits intraprendeva la costruzione
del lussuosissimo hotel Riviera Palace,
secondo il progetto dell’architetto Georges
Chedanne Grand Prix de Rome nel 1887, e
ideatore del fastoso e classico Palace Hôtel,
in avenue des Champs Elysées e dello
stravagante Hôtel Mercedes, al 9 di rue de
Presbourg a Parigi.
Il Riviera Palace mostra la sua facciata
elegante, esposta a sud, come una
superficie semplice su cui si alternano varie
finestre, bovindi, sbalzi, balconi a balaustre.
La sua costruzione, in cemento intonacato a
stucco, ebbe termine nel 1903.
IL GIARDINO D’INVERNO E LA
MAESTOSA VETRATA
Nati grazie alla moda dei sapienti botanici
del XVIII secolo e allo sviluppo dell’industria
del ferro e del vetro nel XIX secolo, le serregiardino sono veri e propri gioielli. Costruito
su due livelli, il giardino d’inverno del
Riviera Palace, straordinariamente vasto
con i suoi 900 m2 per 20 m di altezza, unisce,
in una prospettiva molto aerea, galleria e
rotonda, volta ad ogiva e cupola, muraglia
di pietra, vetro e roccia.
VILLEGGIATURA E
MONDANITÀ
All’inizio del XX secolo, il Riviera Palace luogo magico, un enorme hotel mondano,
a 180 m di altezza affacciato sul mare accoglieva, assieme ai prestigiosi hotel
di Parigi, la ricca clientela russa, austroungarica e poi inglese, in onore della
quale venivano organizzate feste sontuose.
Divenne ben presto un polo di villeggiatura
e di mondanità molto apprezzato. Si tratta
di una “lode alla bellezza italiana del
sito, coniugata alla raffinatezza dell’arte
dell’ospitalità francese”. Dal 14 dicembre
1989 questo edificio è inserito tra i
Monumenti Storici.

Sur ce site, se trouvent les vestiges d’un oppidum classé Monument Historique
en 1939. Édifié par les populations celto-ligures qui habitaient la région peu
avant le début de l’ère chrétienne, ce «castellaras» servait à protéger les
habitations situées à proximité du Mont des Mules. Cette place forte dominait
la côte et le port antique de Monaco. Le Mont des Mules, qui culmine à 291m
d’altitude est une étape de l’itinéraire transfrontalier du patrimoine romain
« Via Julia Augusta ».
Au sommet du site se trouve une table d’orientation d’où l’on peut profiter
d’une vue panoramique sur la Principauté de Monaco jusqu’aux côtes
italiennes.
SANCTUAIRE SAINT JOSEPH

De style néo-roman, construite à partir de 1913 et inaugurée en 1923, l’église
constitue l’unique sanctuaire dédié à Saint Joseph, dans le département des
Alpes-Maritimes. Il est possible d’y admirer de magnifiques vitraux réalisés
notamment par de grands Maîtres verriers du XXème siècle, tels que les
frères MAUMEJEAN.
La Saint-Joseph, célébrée le 19 mars à l’occasion de la fête patronale,
perpétue la traditionnelle distribution des petits pains bénits, en signe de
partage.

On this site are the ruins of an oppidum
listed as a Historic Monument in 1939.
This “castellaras” was built by the CelticLigurian people who inhabited the region
just before the beginning of the Christian
era and served to protect the dwellings
near Mont des Mules. This stronghold
towered over the coast and the ancient
port of Monaco. Mont des Mules reaches
an altitude of 291m and is a stage in the
Via Julia Augusta, the Roman road which
wound its way across the border with Italy.
At the top of the hill is a viewing table from
where you can enjoy a panoramic view over
the Principality of Monaco to the coastline
of Italy.
SAINT JOSEPH SANCTUARY

Work started on this neo-Romanesque
church in 1913 and it was inaugurated
in 1923, the only sanctuary dedicated
to Saint Joseph in the Alpes-Maritimes
department. It contains magnificent stained
glass windows made by the great Master
glassmakers of the 20th century, such as
the Maumejean brothers.
Saint Joseph’s Day is celebrated on the
19th March and continues the tradition
of distributing blessed bread rolls, as a
symbol of sharing.

In questo sito si trovano i resti di un
oppido classificato Monumento Storico
nel 1939. Eretto dalle popolazioni celtoliguri che abitavano nella regione poco
prima dell’inizio dell’era cristiana, questo

costa e il porto antico di Monaco. Mont des

In cima al sito si trova una tavola di
orientazione grazie alla quale si può

SANTUARIO SAINT JOSEPH

delle Alpi Marittime. È possibile ammirarvi
delle magnifiche vetrate realizzate dai
grandi maestri vetrai del XX secolo, come
i fratelli MAUMEJEAN.
La Saint-Joseph, festeggiata il 19 marzo in
occasione della festa patronale, tramanda
la tradizionale distribuzione del pane
benedetto, come segno di condivisione.
