Dear IS Modena families,
Following the recent break ins to our parents cars in the public parking area outside our school, we
have once again informed the Mayor of Castelnuovo Rangone to raise awareness and ask for some
action. The parking area is on public grounds and therefore we, as a school, are limited in what we can
do. However, we will keep the dialogue ongoing with the Municipality of Castelnuovo Rangone to
explore ways of collaborating on making the public parking area more secure.
As a means of raising awareness of our school and educational programmes and increasing links to
our local community, today we received the visit from Ms. Sofia Baldazzini, Assessore al Comune di
Castelnuovo Rangone with responsibility for school. During her visit, Ms. Baldazzini, has also met with
Grades 5 & 6 to discuss the agenda for their upcoming trip to the Giunta Comunale in Castelnuovo for
their Unit of Inquiry on Societal Decision Making.
We have a very busy two weeks ahead of us . Today we should be receiving the information package
from RDZ regarding the profiling of personal devices . It will be circulated directly from Milan to all our
parents. RDZ team will be in school on Wednesday and Thursday and available to meet parents in the
morning and afternoon to answer and queries.
Furthermore, we have a very important appointment for all our Italian speaking families who wish to
have a better understanding of the Middle Years Program. Don’t miss the MYP Workshop this coming
Thursday at 13:30 – in Italian.
This coming Friday will also be St. Valentine’s Day and the Student Council has been busy in
organising a themed day. Please read on for details from the ISM Student Council.
Also on Friday, our upper end of Middle Years, Grade 10 will be having a Q & A session with Mr.
Sachdev, Upper Years Principal in ISMilan, and then take part in our open presentation on Grade 11
and Diploma Programme development.
Lastly, we have started preparing for Book Week and we are pleased to announce that Ms. Claudia
Schmitz will be collaborating with us and Ms. Silvia in making our Library a centre of reading activities.

Gent.me famiglie IS Modena,
in seguito a recenti episodi di furti ai danni delle macchine dei nostri genitori nel parcheggio pubblico
antistante la scuola, abbiamo ancora una volta informato il sindaco di Castelnuovo Rangone sulla
necessità di prendere provvedimenti. Il parcheggio è costruito su un area pubblica, quindi la scuola è
molto limitata nel poter prendere provvedimenti direttamente. Tuttavia, manterremo il dialogo aperto
con il Comune di Castelnuovo Rangone per esplorare modalità di collaborazione per rendere il
parcheggio un area più sicura.
Con l’obiettivo di fare conoscere la nostra scuola e i nostri programmi didattici e di accrescere i
collegamenti con la nostra comunità locale, oggi abbiamo ricevuto in visita Ms Sofia Baldazzini,
Assessore al Comune di Castelnuovo Rangone con delega alla scuola. Nel corso della sua visita Ms
Baldazzini ha incontrato Grade 5&6 per discutere l’agenda della loro visita alla Giunta Comunale di
Castelnuovo per la loro unità d’Indagine su ‘Prendere decisioni per la società’.
Abbiamo due settimane impegnative davanti a noi. Oggi dovremmo ricevere il pacchetto informativo da
parte di RDZ per la profilazione dei dispositivi personali. Verrà inviata direttamente da Milano a tutti i
nostri genitori. Il team RDZ sarà a scuola mercoledì e giovedi e sarà a disposizione per incontrare i
genitori al mattino e al pomeriggio per rispondere alle vostre domande.
Inoltre, abbiamo un importante appuntamento per la famiglie italiane che desideramo avere una
migliore comprensione del Middle Years Program. Non perdete il workshop MYP questo giovedì alle
13:30 in Italiano.
Questo venerdì sarà il giorno di San Valentino e il Consiglio studentesco è stato impegnato
nell’organizzazione di una giornata a tema. Seguono nella newsletter i dettagli.
Sempre venerdì, l’ultima classe di Middle Years, Grade 10, incontrerà Mr Sachdev ,Preside delle
Superiori presso IS Milan, per un sessione di domande e risposte e prenderanno poi parte alla
presentazione aperta su Grade 11 e lo sviluppo del Diploma Programme.
Infine, abbiamo iniziato la preparazione della settimana del libro e siamo felici di annunciare che Ms
Claudia Schmitz collaborerà con noi e Ms Silvia per rendere la nostra Biblioteca un centro di attività di

WIFI ACCESS FOR STUDENTS – UPDATE
Pending the documentation and FAQ brochure that is being prepared by our consultants RDZ, we can
inform parents that a number of technical developments have been introduced and these notes
indicate the way that profiling and configuration will operate:
No programs or apps are downloaded onto student devices
The device is configured to ISE wifi through a proxy server which guarantees internet filtering
The proxy connection is only operational when using the ISE wifi network
Profiling is not effective outside ISE and does not affect navigation at home or on other wifi
networks
Safe navigation is enabled at ISM but not at home or on other networks
Tracking of internet use is enabled at school with normal privacy guarantees but it is not enabled
outside ISM on other networks
The calendar for profiling devices is given below. If you would prefer us not to profile your device,
please inform the School Manager.
Grades 3-6 on Wednesday, February 12
Grades 7-10 on Thursday, February 13
RDZ technicians will be available in our ICT suite from 8:30 to 9:30 and from 14:00 to 15:00 on both
days to meet our parents and answer any questions.
ACCESSO WIFI PER GLI STUDENTI – AGGIORNAMENTO
I attesa della documentazione informativa e delle FAQ (domande e risposte frequenti) che i nostri
consulenti della RDZ stanno preparando, informiamo i genitori che sono stati introdotti alcuni sviluppi
tecnici, e le note seguenti indicano come funziona la configurazione e profilazione:
Non vengono scaricati programmi o applicazioni sugli strumenti degli studenti
I computer/iPads/tablet sono configurati sul wifi ISE attraverso un server proxy, che permette il
filtraggio dei contenuti di internet
La connessione proxy è operativa solo quando si usa il network wifi ISE
La configurazione non sarà effettiva al di fuori dell’ISE, e non avrà alcun impatto sulla navigazione a
casa o su altri network wifi
La “navigazione sicura” è attivata all’interno di ISM, ma non a casa o su altri network
Il tracciamento dell’uso di internet è attivato a scuola con le normali garanzie per la privacy, ma non
è attivo al di fuori di ISM o su altri network
Il calendario per la configurazione è riportato di seguito. Se preferite che il vostro
computer/iPad/tablet non venga configurato, vi invitiamo ad informare la School Manager.

I tecnici RDZ saranno a disposizione dei ns. genitori per rispondere ad eventuali domande dalle 8:30

St. Valentine’s Day

Dear Parents,
On Friday, 14th February, we will be having a dress up day to celebrate St Valentine’s Day. This is an
optional choice but it would be appreciated if your child joins in. Could your child please come in
red, white, pink or purple to school to celebrate this day. Please remember that the rules of the
school dress code will still apply and this means that all clothes should be an appropriate length, so
tops should cover shoulders and either trousers, skirts or shorts should be an appropriate length.
There will also be a Valentine’s Day box located in the main entrance of the school for your child to
write notes or letters to their friends in. Please remind your child that they need to write the name
and grade of the person they are sending it to on it and that this doesn’t mean they have to be
‘love letters,’ just simply positive notes to their classmates.

Cari Genitori,
venerdì 14 febbraio avremo una giornata in cui i ragazzi verranno vestiti a tema per festeggiare San
Valentino. Si tratta di una scelta facoltativa ma ci auguriamo una partecipazione numerosa dei ns.
studenti. Gli studenti dovranno venire a scuola indossando qualcosa di rosso, bianco, rosa o viola
per celebrare questa giornata. Ricordate che resta sempre valido il codice di abbigliamento della
scuola, ovvero tutti gli indumenti dovranno essere di lunghezza adeguata, le maglie dovranno
coprire le spalle e i pantaloni, gonne o shorts dovranno essere di una lunghezza appropriata. Ci sarà
anche una scatola di San Valentino all'entrata principale della scuola in cui gli studenti potranno
lasciare bigliettini o lettere per i loro amici. Ricordate ai Vostri figli che dovranno scrivere il nome e
la classe della persona a cui è destinato il messaggio e che non dovrà per forza trattarsi di una
'lettera d'amore', ma anche solo di un messaggio positivo per i compagni.

share ideas about new books for the library by adding to the library wish list
add your suggestions for book related activities that we could include into our school life at ISM

Enough words, it’s time for ACTION!
Our school community is coming together once again to help those in need who have
been hit, again, by a natural catastrophe, the floodings in the Modena “Bassa” area.
Parents, students and staff are taking action. We will circulate information this week on
how we intend to help and what you can do to actively participate.
La ns. comunità scolastica si sta organizzando ancora una volta per aiutare coloro che
sono stati colpiti dall’ennesima catastrofe naturale, l’alluvione nella Bassa. I ns. Genitori,
studenti e staff si stanno attivando. Faremo ciroclare questa settimana i dettagli di come
intendiamo aiutare e di come potrete partecipare attivamente.

Dear parents,
We are sure you are all aware of the terrible flood that occurred this January in a neighborhood north west of
Modena. In the towns of Bastiglia and Bomporto the ground floors were flooded with more than 1,5 meters of water
that stayed for a week, destroying everything that was inside (furniture, doors and windows, objects, the job and the
memories of an entire life….).
Our ISM community has always been ready to take action and also this time some of us want to be helpful and
partecipate with the reconstruction: we’re now asking for your help!
We are collecting furniture and appliances: in your home you may find something you don’t use anymore that you
wish to donate. Please send us a mail with a description of the objects you’re offering, measurements and if possible
a picture and the place where they are stored.
We are sorting all the informations and we will forward it to people who live in the effected places (both through
local links and some associations). When an object will find its family in need the transport will be organized.
The Scuola Materna "Caiumi" di Bomporto is also looking for donations. They need teaching/working material
(coloring pencils, paper, books, toys)-ages 3-6 and furniture (tables, seats, lockers, etc.)
Alexandra de la Guardia talked to the school director and learned that the school can receive donations morning or
afternoon. Alexandra also offered to take smaller items there directly.
Please let's get involved and show the people in the flooded areas that we all care!

Cari genitori,
siete tutti a conoscenza della terribile alluvione che ha colpito lo scorso gennaio una comunità vicinissima a noi. Nei
centri di Bastiglia e Bomporto l’acqua ha raggiunto 1,5 metri di altezza e vi è rimasta per oltre una settimana,
sommergendo i pianterreni di case, negozi, uffici, ecc… e distruggendo tutto ciò che era contenuto in quelle stanze
(mobili, oggetti vari, infissi, il lavoro e i ricordi di una vita….).
La nostra comunità all’ISM si è sempre dimostrata molto attiva nell’offrire aiuto e anche questa volta alcuni di noi
vogliono partecipare alla ricostruzione e sentirsi utili: chiediamo anche il tuo aiuto!
Stiamo organizzando una raccolta mobili ed elettrodomestici; nella tua casa potresti avere qualcosa in buono stato
che non usi più e che vorresti donare alle famiglie colpite. Mandaci una mail con una descrizione degli oggetti che
offri, le misure, se possibile una foto e il luogo dove si trovano.
Noi raccogliamo e cataloghiamo le informazioni per passarle a chi vive sul territorio (sia tramite conoscenze locali sia
attraverso alcune associazioni). Una volta abbinati oggetti e persone si organizzerà il trasporto.
La Scuola Materna ‘Caiumi’ di Bomporto cerca donazioni. Hanno bisogno di materiale educativo (matite colorate,
carta, libri giochi) per bambini di 3/6 anni e arredi (tavoli, sedie, armadietti, ecc.)
Alexandra De La Guardia ha parlato con il direttore scolastico ed è venuta a conoscenza che la scuola può ricevere
donazioni al mattino e al pomeriggio. Alexandra si è offerta di portare là direttamente gli oggetti più piccoli.
Per favore impegnamoci e dimostriamo alle persone colpite dall’alluvione che ci teniamo a loro!

School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please come in before 8:30
am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.
We remind parents that they are kindly invited to leave the Primary classrooms by 8:25 am in
the morning.
Teachers begin their didactic activity at 8:30 am.
L’attività accademica inizia alle 8:30!
Vi ricordiamo che le lezioni iniziano alle 8.30 in punto. Ciò significa che le attività didattiche della
giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere
inevitabilmente il lavoro della classe. Vi invitiamo ad arrivare prima delle 8.30, vi ricordiamo che
gli studenti possono arrivare dalle 8:10 in avanti.
Ricordiamo cortesemente ai genitori che è necessario uscire dalle aule delle Elementari entro
le 8:25. Le insegnanti iniziano l’attività didattica alle 8:30.

Emergency contact procedure in place at IS Modena in case of heavy snow falls
Always check our school website first, in case we need to close the school the homepage will
host the information; our Facebook page and account will also host the same information
however the website will be the first to be updated;
Should the snowfall occur during the night, all our parents will receive an emergency
communication via text/SMS on their mobile devices (cell phones). Please make sure the office
has your updated Italian contact number.

Per prima cosa, controllate sempre il nostro sito internet, dove indicheremo se ci sarà la
necessità di chiudere la scuola; anche il nostro profilo e la nostra pagina Facebook riporteranno le
stesse informazioni, tuttavia sarà il nostro sito il primo ad essere aggiornato;
Se dovesse nevicare durante la notte, i nostri genitori riceveranno una comunicazione
d’emergenza via SMS sui loro cellulari. Vi invitiamo dunque ad accertarvi che la segreteria abbia i
vostri dati aggiornati.

The Library will be open Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday from 15:00 to
16:00.
Students from Grade 5 upwards are
welcome to sign up in the office for
afterschool reading.

Due to organizational reasons uniform orders will be
collated and uniforms will be ready for payment &
collection at the end of each month.
Orders placed in January will be ready on
Monday , February 17th .
Orders of one single item will no longer be accepted.

Parking area
All parents must use the public parking area outside the
school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you
don’t leave any personal belongings in the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus
service.
Parcheggio esterno
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio
all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di chiudere le portiere
dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina. Il
parcheggio interno è riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
