09:45 – 11:00 Session I: Demographic Change: a significant challenge and a great social
opportunity in Europe
Focus
The Panel will address the need to reconnect policy and science both at national and
European level and to improve cooperation among research entities with the aim of
making the greater impact on grand challenges such as demographic change. It will discuss
whether the current European research policy, including the European Research Area and
the recent Communication on Research and innovation as sources of renewed growth are
leading to a significant improvement in Europe’s research performance to promote growth.
Two examples from two relevant JPIs will be debated: the JPI More Years and Better Lives
and the JPI Urban Europe. Both initiatives are contributing to make better use of Europe’s
public funds in the field pf Demographic Change. The European Commission will contribute
to the debate and address how to best grow a large scale Silver Economy in Europe in order
to help European industry (and SMEs in particular) to be in the driving seat.

11:00 – 12:15 Session II: Demographic Change: an opportunity to promote healthy
nutrition for healthy ageing
Focus
The panel will highlight difficulties in science-policy dialogue; principles for good policyscience collaboration and will elaborate on stakeholder involvement and the need for a
multi-disciplinary approach in the research aimed at issues generated by the demographic
change. The priority areas identified by the European Commission in the field of nutrition for
elderly; the European food industry initiatives in nutrition and healthy diets; the contribution
from the academia in nutrition and ageing will all constitute contributions to a constructive
debate.
