Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation “CHEI is an unique academic research centre, dedicated exclusively to doctoral studies, research, advice and training on internationalisation of higher education” Professor Hans de Wit, Director CHEI About CHEI The Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI) at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore promotes and conducts research, training and policy analysis to strengthen the international dimensions of higher education. Founded in 2012, CHEI organises seminars, conferences, training courses and workshops; designs, conducts and commissions research; disseminates results through publications and conferences; and offers one of the only doctoral programs in the world focused on higher education internationalisation in conjuction with the Faculty of Education and other Università Cattolica Faculties. The Centre is positioned directly under the Rector of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Prof. Franco Anelli, and is headed by Prof. Hans de Wit under a Management Board presided by the Rector’s Delegate for Internationalisation of the University, Prof. Pier Sandro Cocconcelli, and advised by a Scientific Committee, chaired by Prof. John K. Hudzik, Michigan State University. CHEI aims to contribute to research and professional practice in higher education internationalisation at Università Cattolica, in Italy, across Europe, and globally, through extensive outreach in activities and affiliation with leaders and practitioners in the field. Five countries across three continents are represented within the leadership and management group of CHEI. Regular participation in international conferences on higher education internationalisation support ongoing engagement in dialogue on national and regional priorities and emerging issues. CHEI is based at Università Cattolica’s Milan campus. Themes in focus With the diverse and rapidly growing area of higher education internationalisation, the work of CHEI is concentrated within four key areas: 1. Emerging trends in internationalisation: policies, strategy, mobility, recruitment, internationalisation of the curriculum 2. Rationales for internationalisation: economic drivers, political factors, social/cultural motives, educational rationales 3. International education and institutional development: university internationalisation strategy development; using research to develop policy on international education; incorporating at home and abroad dimensions into institutional strategy; using data to shape institutional strategy 4. Internationalisation of Italian universities in the European and global context: creating a forum for dialogue for Italian institutions Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) is Europe’s largest private university and the only university in Italy operating on a national scale. Founded in Milan in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli, UCSC also has campuses in Piacenza-Cremona, Brescia, and Rome. At Università Cattolica, 41,000 students from around the world study across 12 Faculties. Università Cattolica offers some of the most challenging academic programs in areas of medicine and health sciences, economics and business, political and social sciences, psychology, humanities, and agricultural, food and life sciences. Ongoing dialogue between teaching and research allows for an approach drawing on various disciplines, which helps students navigate within the sphere of scientific knowledge in an independent and responsible manner. Università Cattolica researchers work with peers at some of the world’s leading universities and research institutes, creating new knowledge to help understand and solve some of the world’s most complex problems. Università Cattolica strives to uphold its international reputation for high quality and relevant scholarship. As one of the top 500 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings), ongoing investment in teaching, research and social development in Italy and abroad ensures that the influence of the University reaches beyond its campus population to touch an expanding global audience. Research activity at Università Cattolica spans over 120 research hubs and is aimed towards the study of issues crucial to life and society: new frontiers in economics and bioethics, the recovery of cultural assets, family trends, the phenomenon of the mass media, the development of political systems, the aims of medicine, technological applications of mathematics and physics, the most recent discoveries in environmental research. With the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation, Università Cattolica will make an important contribution to higher education research around the world. The CHEI publications, training and seminars are illustrative of that contribution, such as the Seminar “International and European Higher Education: Trends and challenges for Italy” with distinguished scholars Philip Altbach (USA), Jo Ritzen (The Netherlands) and Michele Lenoci, Renata Viganò, Simona Beretta, Mario Maggioni from Cattolica, 24 May 2013, Milan, in collaboration with CeRiForm/School of Education. Activities of CHEI Doctoral program in higher education internationalisation With the development of higher education internationalisation as a priority for institutions around the world, the demand for expert training and research in the field has increased over the last decade. CHEI has developed a doctoral programme for aspiring researchers and professionals in higher education internationalisation. CHEI’s Doctoral Programme is offered through Università Cattolica’s School of Education. It’s a 1+3 years programme, including one preparatory year and three years of research, and is exclusively focussed on the internationalisation of higher education. Candidates will satisfy the requirements of the program by undertaking a substantial research project and writing a dissertation. It is primarily a distance doctoral programme: most candidates will continue to work in their home countries whilst undertaking the programme and will participate in two four-day research and training seminars held at Università Cattolica in Milan each year, to support the development of their research skills, receive guest lectures, and connect with other researchers and professionals to discuss their mutual research. The formal admissions’ process is undertaken annually, usually over the second and third quarter, depending on the dates and deadlines of the annual call for applicants for doctoral places at Uni- versità Cattolica. The doctoral programme starts in November. Prospective candidates are encouraged to attend the CHEI research training seminars to assist in the preparation of their proposal. The network created through the seminars will support candidates during the programme and help to connect them with others working in related areas of research. Candidates are supervised by the CHEI’s Director, Prof. Hans de Wit, and co-supervised by members of CHEI’s Scientific Committee with expertise in a similar area of research. Through the seminars, CHEI is developing a knowledge community in higher education internationalisation which is open to anyone undertaking research in the area or contemplating doctoral study. The CHEI Research Training Seminar is a core component of the Centre’s Doctoral Programme. Many candidates use the seminar to create space in their demanding lives to focus on the development of their dissertation proposal. Other attendees are formally enrolled in a doctoral program at another institution and use the seminar to network with other researchers. In the future, CHEI will be developing opportunities for candidates to undertake Ph.D. double degree programs with institutions around the world. The Seminar was developed with the support of the Researchers in International Education special interest group of the European Association of International Education (EAIE) to provide more formalised training on international education research. The first Seminar, held in November 2012, welcomed twenty-one participants from eight countries. The Seminar was chaired by CHEI’s Director, Prof. Hans de Wit, who was assisted by members of the Centre’s Scientific Committee, Fiona Hunter and Elspeth Jones. An entire day was dedicated to training in Doctoral study skills, facilitated by Prof. Mike Wallace. CHEI hosted two Research Training Seminars in 2013. The first seminar took place in April, with Prof. John k. Hudzik and Stephen C. Dunnet discussing on Comprehensive internationalisation and research, Wendy Green giving a lecture on Action Research on Internationalisation of the Curriculum and with a session held by Prof. Mike Wallace on developing critical thinking capability, critical reading, and writing a doctoral dissertation project. This seminar attracted participants from ten different countries. The second seminar was held in October and chaired by Prof. Hans de Wit and Fiona Hunter, with guest lectures by Christopher Ziguras from RMIT, Australia, and Addy Rodrigues Betanzos from Universidad de Quintana Roo, Mexico, and included a workshop on Intercultural competence by Darla K. Deardorff, USA. This seminar included twelve participants from seven countries. The 2014 Research Training Seminars will be held at Università Cattolica on 25–28 March, 2014, and in the fall of 2014. Tony Adams Visiting Scholars Scheme As part of the development of a knowledge community in higher education internationalisation, CHEI supports visiting scholars. The objective of the Tony Adams Vising Scholars Scheme is to provide an international research environment in higher education internationalisation that enhances the research capacity of the Centre and of its scholars. During their stay, visiting scholars will participate in the research, training and dissemination activities of CHEI. They will also be expected to give guest lectures at Università Cattolica and at other Italian universities. One scholarship is available each year. The Scheme will fund one senior or one junior scholar each year for periods of six to twelve weeks. The funding covers travel, accommodation in Università Cattolica residence hall and office space. A stipend of 900 euros per month will be provided to senior scholars, while junior scholars will receive 600 euros per month. Application details are available on the CHEI website. CHEI also provides facilities for visiting scholars without financial aid. Such visiting scholars can make use of the office space and library as well as administrative support of the Centre and can participate in the CHEI activities, such as seminars, guest lectures and publications. The Scheme is named in honour of the late Tony Adams, a leading international educator, advisor to Università Cattolica, and friend and colleague to many in the field.
