Promoting Italian Art in the US Italian Cultural Institute At Volterra Maximum Security Prison, in 1998, the director Armando Punzo established the “Compagnia della Fortezza”, a theatre troupe comprised of dangerous felons and hardcore “lifers”. For the past 6 years Clara Vannucci has documented the therapeutic use of method acting in Italy’s notorious Volterra Prison, capturing travelling inmate troupes rehearse behind bars and perform to sold-out crowds. Through Vannucci’s lens we witness the powerful transformation these men undergo trying on roles of alternate characters’ lives and in the process leaving behind the stigma and pain of their past regressions, albeit for a brief moment. Italian Cultural Institute Andrea Zanzotto (1921-2011) is widely considered one of the most important Italian and European poets of the twentieth century. Zanzotto’s poetry has registered the profound social and cultural changes that have transformed postwar Italy. Patrick Barron teaches at the University of Massachusetts. He has received awards from the Academy of American Poets, the American Academy in Rome, the Fulbright Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Welle, University of Notre Dame) Winner of numerous prizes in more than twenty national and international piano competitions achieving success with audience and critics, Salvatore Gitto performed in important Halls and Festivals all over Italy. In September 2013 he was invited to give a concert in honor of King Albert II of Belgium and Queen Paola of Liége. He worked with composers Carmelo Chillemi, whose some piano works he gave the premiere in 2012, and Giuseppe Azzarelli, whose original scene music Gitto performed in collaboration with the famous stage director Eugenio Monti Colla at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Rita Levi Montalcini, the longest living Nobel Prize winner, died on December 30, 2012 at the age of 103. She established her fame by discovering the first nerve growth factor, NGF, in the1950s. Her finding led to the identification of many growth factors, which have greatly influenced developmental biology, neuroscience, immunology and cancer. (January 30th to February 16th in 2014), an open talk will be held with the Teatro delle Albe at the Italian Cultural Institute. Marco Martinelli, Ermanna Montanari and Alessandro Renda will present the thirty-year long history of the company. Max Pellegrini and Italo Cremona Exhibition An exhibition focused on the last ten years of Max Pellegrini’s work, mostly previously undisplayed, where we can find an evolution of his poetics, towards a delicate symbolism in which he links literary citations to an elegant linear and chromatic style. His personal path, the one of an outsider enamoured with painting, is summarized in these large canvases, where we can see the different inspirations and experiences that nurtered him: psychedelia and protest, the love for history of art and the experiments of avant-garde, classical knowledge and post-modern thinking.
