The Mission of the Oregon PTA is to support and speak on behalf of
children and youth in the schools, in the community and before
governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting
children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and
protect their children; and to encourage parent and public involvement in
the public schools of this nation.
2014/15 PTA Board – Is it
Right for You?
Serving on the Richmond PTA Board these past
few years has been one of the most rewarding
experiences of my volunteer career. I’m privileged to
work with amazingly motivated, inspired individuals
who care deeply about Richmond—enough to devote
precious time to creating the school environment they
want for their children.
Well, it’s that time of year again, when PTA seeks
fresh minds to bring new energy and ideas to
invigorate the PTA Board. A special call out to
parents of lower grade children: many current PTA
board members will be “graduating” along with their
children. It is important that these vacant positions be
filled with parents who will be at Richmond for a
number of years in the future, so they may benefit
from the fruits of their leadership labor.
Please – if you have been thinking about getting
involved in PTA, consider joining the 2014/15 PTA
Board. While all positions are open for nominations
every year, a few key roles have yet to receive
nominees. These include:

数年間リッチモンドのPTA役員として活動出
来たことは、私のボランティアキャリアにとっ
て、とても価値ある経験となりました。リッチモ
ンドのことを考え、子供達のより良い学習環境の
為に貴重な時間を割いて下さる方々と共に働けた
ことはとても光栄であり、皆さんの熱意に感銘を
受けました。
そして今、PTAに新たな風を吹き込んでくれ
る新役員を募集する時期となりました。特に、低
学年のお子さんをお持ちの保護者の皆さんにお願
いです。現役員の殆どは、今年度で子供達と共に
卒業します。現在募集中の新役員のポジションに
は、今後数年間リッチモンドで活動して頂ける方
に就いて頂ければ幸いです。

BANK DAY UPDATE — バンク・デーの最新情報
At the end of 2013 Richmond PTA announced a new
Bank Day partnership with Key Bank. We also announced
that PTA would stop accepting Umpqua bank deposits after
the end of January 2014. Unfortunately, the partnership
with Key Bank fell through and PTA will continue to
accept Umpqua deposits until further notice.
PTA will continue its search for a new community
bank partner to revitalize Bank Day and increase the
level of banking services to Richmond
students. Until that time, Bank Day will
proceed as always, accepting Umpqua
deposits Wednesday mornings before school,
in the Richmond cafeteria (no Bank Day on
late start days).
PTA apologizes for any confusion around
Bank Day services, and looks forward to
bringing you good banking news, soon!
2013年の年末、リッチモンドPTAは新しいバン
ク・デーのパートナーとしてKey Bankとの提携を発表し
ました。また、2014年１月からUmpquaへの預金を受け
付けないこともお知らせしていました。しかし、残念な
がらKey Bankとの提携は不成立となり、PTAは当面の
間、Umpquaへの預金を引き続き受け付けます.
PTAは、バンク・デーを活性化するため、また
リッチモンドの生徒たち向け銀行サービスの
レベルを高めるため、引き続きコミュニ
ティの新しい銀行パートナーを探します。
PTAは、バンク・デーのサービスをめぐって
のいかなる混乱に対してもおわびを申し上げ

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR A SUCCESS!
The Fall Scholastic Book Fair was a resounding success, raising over $1700 for English
language books for the Richmond Library. The next Fair will be held at the end of April, with all
proceeds from that sale designated for Japanese Language books. Many, many thanks to all the
volunteers who made the Book Fair a success, with special appreciation to Yumi Wong and
Angie Pineo for coordinating all things Scholastic and making the fair possible.
NEXT PTA GENERAL MEETING – BOOK DRIVE - CHILDREN WELCOME
Thursday, March 6, 2014, Richmond Library, 6:30-8pm
“A child from a low-income family enters first grade with an average of only 25 hours of one-to-one picture book
reading, compared with 1,000 to 1,700 hours for a child from a typical middle-class home…The harsh reality is that
two thirds of low-income families own no books for their children. With nearly one in five urban preschoolers living
below the federal poverty level, the need for books is huge.” ~ The Children’s Book Bank, Portland, OR
Bring your child and one or more new or gently used books to the next General PTA meeting, Thursday March 6th.
After a brief report on the state of PTA (budget update, membership, upcoming events), parents and children will work
together to organize the books to donate to The Children’s Book Bank. This is a wonderful shared service opportunity for
you and your children — a fantastic way to illustrate the power of giving when like-minded people work together.
Refreshments will be served!

「低所得家庭で育ち一年生になる子どもは、平均して１対１で絵本を読む時間がたった２５時間。それに対して典
型的な中流家庭の子どもは１０００時間から１７００時間・・・低所得家庭の３分の２が本を持っていないという厳しい
現実があります。都市部のプリスクールに通う子どもの５人に１人が連邦貧困水準（学校給食プログラムなど多くの公的
プログラムで受給資格を決定するために利用されている貧困基準）を下回るなか、本の必要性は非常に大きいです。」

3月6日（木）のPTA総会へ、あなたのお子さんを連れて、１冊以上の新しいかまたはていねいに使われた本を持っ
ていらして下さい。PTAについての簡潔な報告（予算、メンバーシップ、近々のイベント）の後で、それらの本をチルド
レンズ・ブック・バンクへ寄付するため、親子で一緒に作業をします。これは、あなたとお子さんがシェアできる素晴ら
しい奉仕の機会です。志を同じくする者同士が力を合わせるときの、与えるという力を示す素晴らしい方法です。軽い飲
食物をご用意しております！
SCIENCE FAIR SUBMISSIONS DUE MARCH 1, 2014
PTA is excited to host another fabulous Science Fair Friday, March 14th, 6:30-8:00pm. Students may participate
in one of 5 categories: Experiment, Invention, Research, Collection or Living History. Registration forms have
already been sent home, but if you need another, visit the Richmond PTA website, richmondptapdx.com. Completed
registration forms should be returned to room #110 no later than March 1, 2014. Poster boards are also available for
sale for $3/board in Room 110.
There are several ways for parents to get involved:
Share: we’re seeking parents to mill about in the “costume” of their science-related profession or
hobby to describe their science-based jobs.
Exhibit: Do you have amazing science displays, collections or other visuals you may share? Are you
involved with a science volunteer organization that might like to come and have a booth or share their
expertise with the kids?
Judge: come help by providing feedback to the participants.
Reward: help create certificates of participation for the students.
Set-up/Clean-up: help is always welcome!

サイエンスフェア申込み締切 (3月1日)
3月14日(金)午後6時半から8時にサイエンスフェアが開催されます。実験、発明、リサーチ、収集、
リビングヒストリーの5部門でのエントリーを募集しています。申込み用紙は既に配布済みですが、追加
で必要な方はPTAのウェブサイト (richmondptapdx.com)からダウンロードが可能です。記入済みの申込み
用紙は、3月1日までにルーム110までお持
売しています。
ち下さい。ポスター用ボードも1枚3ドルにて、ルーム110で販
保護者の皆さんも以下の方法で、サイエンスフェアに参加することが可能です。
Share サイエンスに関する仕事や趣味をお持ちの方、それに関連する服装でご参加下さい。
Exhibit サイエンスに関する収集物等を展示しませんか。また、サイエンス系のボランティア団体に所
属されている方、ブースを設置し子供達に活動内容を発表しませんか。
Judge 審査員としてフィードバックをお寄せ下さい。
Reward 子供達へのフェア参加証の作成にご協力下さい。
Set-up/Clean-up 会場の設営、片付けにご協力下さい。

PTA CLOTHING CENTER SERVICE DATE MARCH 17TH
The Portland Council PTA Clothing Center is a free clothing service for all eligible PPS families who need
assistance filling basic clothing needs for their school-aged children. (You do not need to be receiving free or reduced
lunches to be eligible to utilize the Clothing Center.)
Every PPS school is required to send 3-5 volunteers to staff the PTA Clothing Center two days each year.
Richmond’s second — and final — service date for this academic year is Monday, March 17th. If you are interested
in helping support this important PPS resource, contact Sara DeLuca at [email protected].
PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT STATUS
Like the groundhog, the Playground Committee has been resting all winter long preparing for spring’s arrival. Well,
Groundhog Day has come and gone and now we need some serious (and some semi-serious) parents to help envision and
make the next transformations happen on the playground. We are finalizing the turf field layout, programming and financing
tools, and we are ready to start moving on the walking/running path and yes, the MUDDY MOUND! So get your play
clothes on and get ready to have some fun! To get more involved contact parent Pat Lando at [email protected].
SPRING FESTIVAL – SATURDAY MAY 17, 2014
Mark your calendars now — the Spring Festival is coming, and it promises to be a fun event for family, friends,
and community! There will be lots of games and activities for kids, a food court with delectable offerings from all
around Portland, bouncy houses, performances by our own students as well as music and dancing provided by
community artists, and much more!
Planning has already begun and we need help with overall logistics as well as individual tasks. Additionally, if
you are a food or product vendor and would like to have a booth at the Festival, please contact PTA now (Amy Starr
Thomas at [email protected]).
Keep your fingers crossed for good weather on May 17th — it's never too early to start thinking "sun, sun, sun!"
PLEASE RESPECT THE SOUTH GARDEN
Due to some overly “enthusiastic” enjoyment of the South Garden, the Super Green Team has created some
simple guidelines regarding garden use to protect both the garden and those who enjoy it. A new sign will be posted
listing the rules (thanks to Josh Rich at Quoin Graphic and Web Design for developing the sign/graphics). Please note
these expectations and help remind others so that the garden can be enjoyed as a beautiful, green resource.
Leave the garden clean, tidy and trash-free.
Be considerate - don't pull plants or dig holes.
Do not stand or jump on the picnic tables.
Respect the space - do not jump on or over the fence.

パーグリーンチームは公園と公園を楽しむ人々双方を守るため、公園使
用に関する簡単なガイドラインを作成しました。ルールを列挙した新し
い表示が掲示されます（表示/グラフィックスについてはクオイン・グ
ラフィック・アンド・ウェブデザインのジョシュ・リッチさんに感謝い
たします）。どうぞこれらを確認し、他の人々にも伝えてください。そ
うすることで公園は美しい緑の資源として楽しまれることでしょう。

SUMAURA STUDENTS SERVE RICHMOND 5TH GRADERS TEA
Every year, the Cultural Center Committee assists in the Japanese Tea Ceremony, run by the exchange students
from Sumaura School in Kobe. This year, the ceremony took place on Wednesday, February 12th. Our 5th graders
received matcha (tea made out of powdered green tea) from the visiting Sumaura students who are trained in this
traditional ceremony. It was a good opportunity for us to be reminded about the purpose of tea ceremony, that “the
whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, and preparing a bowl of tea from one's heart.”
今年も、須磨浦学園の交換留学生のみなさんが茶の湯をリッチモンドの５
年生の皆さんに披露してくださいます。PTAのCultural Centerは毎年、こ
のお茶会のアシスタントをさせていただいています。茶の湯にはお茶を飲
むということだけでなく、そのお茶を入れるという流れの中に見る美意識
やおもてなしの心が重視されます。茶の湯に関する英語のウエブサイトは
上記の通りです。アメリカのお友達に茶の湯について説明される際、参考
にしてみてください。

100% of Rich Coffee's profits go to our school. That means every cup of coffee, tea and cocoa you purchase directly benefits your children and their teachers, every day. We're very much appreciate all your support for our children and school. Proceeds for 2013/14 Rich Coffee sales will be used to:
Buy instruments for our music class
Get recess items for every classroom
Provide funds for our teachers.
Rich Coffee also has delicious coffee beans for sale! The coffee
is sourced in an environmentally friendly way and costs $11/pound
for regular and $12/pound for decaf. Every bag sold earns $4 for
Save Our Elms, a local non-profit that raises money to inoculate Elm
trees every 3 years and encourages regular pruning to further
lessen their risk of succumbing to disease. With the recent loss of two
of trees from the Richmond playground, our efforts to prolong the
lives of the remaining trees are needed more than ever. To order
whole beans, decaf, and ground coffee please e-mail your orders by
Thursdays at 8 AM at [email protected].
Parent and long-term dedicated volunteer Mary Klinger has spearheaded Save Our Elms coffee sales at Richmond
for years. Her daughter will graduate from Richmond this spring so Mary is seeking someone equally passionate
about caring for our Elms, to take over her job. If you are interested, or simply would like to learn more about this
effort please contact Mary Klinger at [email protected].

のお蔭で3つの用途に売上金を使わせて頂きました。

リッチコーヒー一同私達の子供、学校の為に支援してて頂き感謝しています。
そして、美味しいポートランドロースティングのコーヒー豆の注文申し込み用紙も置いてあります。環
境にも優しいこの珈琲はレギュラー$11, カフェイン無し$12にて販売してます。
この代金より$4が校庭内にあるエルムの木の支援の方に行きます。
珈琲豆の注文は毎週木曜日の朝8時までに[email protected]の方へ連絡お願いします。
エルムの木の支援は501c(3)のノンプロフィットで3年毎に必要なのは木の栄養剤、剪定、害虫予防に使わ
れます。既に校庭内にあった2本のエルムの木が朽ちて伐採されてしまい、今現在ある木を守って行きた
いと思っています。
メリークリンガーさんはずっとボランテイアを頑張って来ましたが、娘さんが今年卒業するので、後
継者を探しています。もし興味のある方が居ましたら[email protected]まで連絡下さい。
