In order to acquire qualifications to the
Athens 2004 Olympic Games coming next
year, the 2003 FIVB World Cup Volleyball
for Men and Women - the biggest and the
most exciting & spectacular sports event in
the year of 2003, competing among
powerful 24 nations (each 12 nation for
Men and Women) for achieving a great
triumph, as the top three (3) teams for both
men & women from the 2003 World Cup
(Men & Women) will qualify to the Athens
2004 Olympic Game. Powerful 24 nations
after keeping on winning their continental
qualifications from 218 nations affiliated to
FIVB, will be coming togather to Japan for
participating in the 2003 World Cup - the
10th edition for Men's event and the 9th
edition for Women's event. The exciting
matches will be performed all around
Japan in 7 cities for Women's event from
1st - 15th Nov. and 6 cities for Men's event
from 16th - 30th Nov., 2003. Volleyball
sensation will be blowing up over the
Japanese archipelago!

Japanese Men's and Women's national
teams launched their first training camps
at the end of March, focusing on the
World Cup 2003 this autumn.
The first international competitions for
men and women this year will be the
World League 2003 and the Montreux
Volley Masters 2003 in Switzerland.

男子全日本の合宿入りは３月24日。ワールドリーグ
を戦う選手を中心に研修、

行われた。
女子の今年度最初の国際試合は６月３日にスイス
で始まるモントルーバレーマスターズ、
男子はギリシャ
に遠征してのワールドリーグ・ギリシャ戦（５月16日〜
18日）が初戦となる。

THE HISTORY OF THE
The volleyball World Cup was inaugurated in 1965 which was just one year after the Olympic Games in Tokyo, in which volleyball
was first introduced as an official event. However, the first competition, which was held in Poland, was only for men and 11 teams
competed. Eight years later, in 1973, the women's tournament began. Since 1977, the World Cup have been held in Japan and this
year's tournaments are the 10th for men and the 9th for women. Hereunder is the history of the women's tournament.

Eight years after the men's tournament, the memorable first World Cup for women
was staged in Uruguay in South America. The U.S.S.R. won the first World Cup,
following their victory in the Olympics in Munich, former West Germany, in the
previous year. The club team, Yashica, representing Japan, participated in the World
Cup and ended as runners-up. Takako Iida led the Yashica squad as the skipper and
contributed to Japan's victory in the Olympics in Montreal three years later.
Under the Fuji Sankei Group's sponsorship, the World Cup for men and women were hosted by Japan during the same
period and it has been continuing since then. Japan, the Olympic champions in Montreal in the previous year, gained
another overwhelming victory in the World Cup. Takako Shirai and Echiko Maeda showed their striking mettle and
contributed tremendously to Japan's victory. Cuba, which had just started making a name themselves, were runners-up.
The Chinese player, Yang Xi, used to be called the "Chinese Momoe-chan" (Momoe-chan was the most popular young
singer in those days) and enjoyed great popularity. Moreover, the audience rating set an amazing record of 60.1 percent.

プ第1回大会は前年のミュンヘン五輪に続いてソ連が優勝。ヤシカの単独チームで臨んだ日
本は、
準優勝に終わった。3年後のモントリオール五輪で金メダルを取る飯田高子が主将とし
てチームをひっぱった。
この大会からフジサンケイグループの協賛を得て、
ワールドカップは日本での男女同時開催
となった。

China, which flourished in the 1980s, started falling into a slight decline. Cuba with
Mireya Luis, Regla Bell and Magaly Carvajal, overwhelmed the U.S.S.R. with
power and height and made a clean sweep. Japan, in which Obayashi was ruled out
due to a twisted ankle, ended up in 4th place for the second time in a row. However,
Mayumi Saito, 18 , made a memorable debut and her sudden and unexpected
appearance brought women's volleyball to the peak of its popularity.
The World Cup' calendar was changed to the pre-Olympic year, and the winner of the
women's tournament qualifies directly for the Olympics as with the men's tournament. Cuba
achieved two consecutive victories. Japan competed with the formation of Obayashi, the key
player in offense, Kumi Nakada as setter and Ichiko Sato as an outside hitter. However, in the
preliminary round, Japan was shocked to be beaten by Korea and ended up in their worst ever
position - 7th place. Asako Tajimi, Japan's middle blocker, made her debut in this World Cup.

Women
ワールドカップが産声を上げたのは、1965年。バレーボールが初めて正式種目として採用された東京オリンピックの翌年のことだった。このときはポーランドに11ヵ国
を集めての男子大会。それから8年後の1973年に女子大会が始まった。以来、今大会で男子は10回、女子は９回を数えるワールドカップの足跡を振り返る。今回は
女子編。

With their star player, Lang Ping, China won the three major world titles for the
first time and began their Golden Era. Japan played a formation which had Juri
Yokoyama and Rieko Mizuhara as outside hitters and Yuko Mitsuya as a middle
blocker; however, the first defeat in official matches against the USA, whose
leading spiker was the late Flo Hyman, resulted in second place. Miyoko Hirose,
Japan's key player in defense, was awarded the prize for best defensive player.
China, having the outstanding outside hitter, Lang Ping, achieved two consecutive World
Cup victories. Japan lost not only to China, but also to the U.S.S.R. and Cuba.
Consequently, Japan did not win any medals for the first time in a major competition. In
this World Cup, the Cuban attacker, Mireya Luis, and the Japanese left-handed spiker,
Motoko Obayashi, made their impressive debuts. Later, Luis enjoyed being the Queen
of Volleyball for a long time and Obayashi led Japan's squad as a key player.

ワールドカップで初めてメダルを失った。その後、
長くバレー界の女王
として君臨することになるキューバのルイスと、
日本バレーを牽引することになる大林素子
が世界デビューを果たした大会でもあった。

Following new regulations, the top three teams, Cuba, Brazil and China qualified for the
Olympics in Sydney 2000. Thanks to the masterly performance of Mireya Luis and
Magaly Carvajal, Cuba accomplished three consecutive victories. Despite the good fight
by Motoko Obayashi, Mika Saiki and Yuki Nakano, Japan finished 6th and missed a ticket
for the Olympics. From these World Cup on, the preliminary rounds were eliminated and
the new competition format - 12 teams play a single round robin format - was introduced.
Mireya Luis and Magaly Carvajal retired from the Cuban team and the new Cuban team with Yumilka Ruiz, Taimaris Aguero,
Ana Ivis Fernandez and Regla Bell won four consecutive World Cup. Furthermore, Cuba hit a new record of seven consecutive
victories in the three major world competitions from the World Cup in 1991. Russia tried to revive their fortunes by playing tall
players such as Evgunia Artamonova, Lioubov Chachkova and Elena Godina and ended up as runners-up. Ikumi Ogake, Chikako
Kumamae and Hiromi Suzuki led the Japanese team and beat China for the first time in five years. Nevertheless, Japan's result of
seven wins and four losses was equivalent to those of Korea and China and Japan finished 6th as a result of winning sets.

フェルナンデス、ベルらで臨んだ新生キューバが大会4連覇。キューバはまた、
91年のワールドカップから続けてきた三大大会での連勝を7に伸ばした。アルタモノワ、シャチコワ、ゴーディナといった
長身選手で復活を目指したロシアが2位に入った。日本は大懸郁久美、熊前知加子、鈴木洋美の3人娘がチームを
ひっぱり中国から5年ぶりの勝利をあげ7勝4敗で韓国、中国と並んだが、セット率差で6位となった。

BABO-chan boosted the World Cup in
the National Volleyball High Schools Tournaments.
バボちゃん、春高バレーで大会をPR
"BABO-chan", which is the mascot of the World Cup and very popular among
people of all ages, appeared at the National Yoyogi Stadium No.1 Gym to promote
the World Cup during the National Volleyball High schools Tournaments from 20th
to 26th March. As the final match of the women's tournament was played by two
local Tokyo teams, it drew a dramatic 15,229 spectators. Throughout the seven-day
tournaments, 79,876 spectators - the greatest number ever in the history of the
tournament - enthusiastically enjoyed the volleyball. This was good news for the
people who have been praying for the revival of the "Volleyball powerhouse".
ワールドカップの顔として子供たちからお年寄りまで幅広く人気を集める大会マス
コットのバボちゃんが、
３月20日から26日まで国立代々木競技場第一体育館で開催
された春高バレー
（全国高等学校選抜優勝大会）
の会場に登場。大会プロモーション
に一役買った。ことしの春高バレーは女子決勝が東京勢どうしの対決だったこともあり、
最終日だけでも１万５，
２２９人、
大会７日間では７万９，
８７６人という大会史上最多の観客
動員数を記録。復活を期す日本バレーボール界に明るいニュースとなった。

ワールドリーグ情報
The opening of the World League 2003, which will be the perfect curtain raiser
for the World Cup, will commence next month. Sixteen elite teams will compete
in the World League, and all teams in the four pools will play against each other,
both home and away during the Intercontinental Round. The top eight teams the two top teams from each pool - will advance to the final round. Japan is in
Pool "D" and will play France, Argentina and Greece. Mikiyasu Tanaka, who is
in his third year in charge, will hope his squad is successful first in the World
League and later in the World Cup, and Japanese volleyball fans are setting their
high hopes on that. The following six matches will be played in Japan.
ワールドカップの前哨戦として注目される今年度のワールドリーグの開幕が来月に
迫った。大会は世界の強豪16ヵ国が４ヵ国ずつ４グループに分かれてインターコンチネ
ンタルラウンドを戦い、
各グループから上位２チームが決勝ラウンドに進出する。日本は
プールＤに属し、
フランス、
アルゼンチン、
ギリシャと対戦。日本国内では左記の６試合が
予定されている。ワールドカップでの上位進出を目標に掲げ３年目に入った田中全日本
の戦いぶりに、
ファンの期待は高まっている。
