The 2003 FIVB World Cups
for men and women, the most
crucial and most exciting
competitions in the pre-Olympic
year, are being held in Japan this
autumn. This year's tournaments
are the 10th for men and the 9th
for women. Twelve outstanding
teams of both men and women
representing 218 FIVB affiliated
nations and regions will compete
with each other for three tickets
to Athens 2004. The women's
tournament is being played from
November 1st to 15th and the
men's tournament from November
16th to 30th. Participating teams
will compete fiercely - moving
from city to city - from the North
to the South of Japan (women: 7
cities, men: 6 cities). These World
Cups will surely create a sensation
across Japan and make everyone
excited again.

フジテレビ主催で“ワールドカップ激励会 ”開催される
Fuji TV, which will broadcast the World
Cup 2003 nationwide, hosted a pre-World
Cup Party, "Good luck, NIPPON! Welcome to Odaiba!", at Hotel Nikko, Tokyo,
on the Fuji TV Day, 8th August. The party
was broadcast live on BS Fuji.
At the opening, 17 members, including
Chikako Kumamae of the women's squad,
13 members of the men's squad with Yoichi Kato, Mr. Mikiyasu Tanaka and Mr.
Shoichi Yanagimoto, head coaches of
men's and women's squads respectively,
made an entrance onto the stage. Unlike
their usual appearance, they were in formal
dress and created a marvelous atmosphere.
On behalf of the hosts, Mr. Koichi Murakami, President of Fuji TV, made an address and vowed to make the World Cup
2003 successful, exerting all their strength,
in collaboration with all of the FNS subsidiary TV stations. Furthermore, Mr. Hisashi Hieda, President of Fuji TV and the
President of the Organising Committee for
the World Cup 2003, proposed a toast to
making the competition a sensational volleyball experience throughout Japan. Mr.
Yasutaka Matsudaira, Honorary President
of the JVA, forcibly emphasised that the
intention of the party was to demand a
strong determination from Japan's squads
and encourage them to win medals in the
World Cup 2003. After the party, Japan's
squads, with a new determination, left for
Hokkaido, where their training camps started the following day.

「ＳＴＡＮＤＵＰＮＩＰＰＯＮ全日本チームお台場
大集合」を8月8日・フジテレビの日に開催。会場とな
ったホテル日航東京から、
ＢＳフジで生中継された。
激励会の冒頭、熊前知加子選手ら全日本女子
17名、加藤陽一選手ら全日本男子13名、そして
田中幹保、柳本晶一両監督がステージに登場。
いつものユニフォーム姿から一転、
この日ばかりは
選手たちも正装で華やかなムード。
主催者を代表して挨拶に立ったフジテレビの
村上光一社長は「ＦＮＳ系列をあげて全力で盛り
上げる」と選手たちにエールを送ると、

組織委員会会長（フジテレビ会長）
も「日本中に興
奮を巻き起こそう」と乾杯の弁。来賓挨拶に立った
松平康隆・日本バレーボール協会名誉会長は、
「今
日は“叱咤激励会”だと思ってもらいたい。ワールド
カップでぜひとも世界の3位以内に入ってもらいたい」
と、選手たちを正に叱咤激励。全日本の選手たち
は誓いも新たにし、翌日からの北海道合宿に旅
立っていった。

It will be the eighth time this year since both the men's and women's World Cups were first staged in Japan in 1977 and each time
the competitions were played in Japan's major cities. The women's tournament this year will be staged in two parallel groups, Site A
and Site B, in eight venues in seven cities.

Tokyo, which will hold the women's opening matches, is, needless to say, Japan's
capital city. Its entire population is well over ten million and many skyscrapers soar in
Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ikebukuro. Yet more skyscrapers are emerging in Roppongi and
Shiodome. The National Yoyogi Stadium No.1 Gymnasium was built for the 1964
Olympics and since then, it has been regarded as Japan's mecca of sports, where
various sport events are held. The opening ceremony for the '77 World Cup took place
at the gym - staged for the first time in Japan - and since then the gym has been the
main venue for the World Cup and has offered volleyball fans the excitement,
enthusiasm and inspiration of volleyball.
女子大会のオープニングを飾る東京は言わずと知れた日本の首都。人口は1,000万を優

スポーツのメッカ。
日本で初開催となった77年ワールドカップの開会式もここが舞台となり、
以来今大会まで常にワールドカップのメイン会場として多くのファンに感動を与えてきた。

札幌でワールドカップが開催されるのは今回が4回目、
女子では前回に続いて3回目となる。
北海道の中心都市・札幌は、

全国5番目の大都市となった。北海道の表玄関・千歳空港から快速に乗
って36分で札幌駅に到着する。会場となる北海道立総合体育センター
（愛称きたえ∼る）

のよさ。大会の行われる11月上旬は例年だと初雪の季節、

女子大会スケジュール
Sapporo hosted the World Cups three times in the past and will host the women's
tournament this year for the third time. Sapporo, the capital city of Hokkaido, has flourished
as the hub of Hokkaido's development since the Meiji era. Having reached a population of
1.84 million today, Sapporo is the fifth biggest city in Japan. Getting to the competition site
(nickname: KITAYELL) from Chitose Airport, the main entrance to Hokkaido, is very easy
and practical. Go to Sapporo Station by rapid train (36 minutes) and change to the Toho-line
(underground) and get off at Toyohira Koen Station. The Sports Centre is directly connected
to the station. Volleyball fans are advised to enjoy the World Cup in winter clothes because
the first snowfall of the season can usually be seen at beginning of November.

Nagoya Rainbow Hall
Nagoya with its population of over two million is the core-city of Japan's midlands
and has flourished since the Edo-era as one of the major cities following Edo (presentday Tokyo), Osaka and Kyo (present-day Kyoto). Aiming to be an international city,
Nagoya is sister cities with Los Angeles and Sydney, and has been actively hosting
international events. The '77 Men's tournament was held here for the first time and
since then Nagoya has hosted the World Cup five times. This year's invitation will be
the sixth - the women's tournament will be the third consecutive year. The Nagoya
Rainbow Hall is well known as the competition site for the Nagoya Tournament in
Sumo and it is easily accessible from Nagoya Station (10-minute travel by train).

ワールドカップが日本で開催されるようになって今回で8回目。大会は毎回、全国の主要都市を転戦しながら開催されてきた。今回の女子大会はサイトAとBに分かれ

Kagoshima, where the opening match of Site B of the Women's tournament will be played, is the
southernmost city on Kyushu Island and is well known as the place which produced out many
political heroes in the Meiji era, such as Takamori Saigo and Toshimichi Okubo. Kagoshima has
been prospering as the core of the economy and culture in Kyushu and has been visited by a large
number of tourists coming to see the sublime scenery of Sakura-jima floating in the Bay of
Kinkou. This year's World Cup in Kagoshima will be the third time followed by the two men's
tournaments of 1995 and 1999. The Kagoshima Arena, which was built in 1992 commemorating
its centennial municipal system, is a sport complex with a main arena (5,700 seats), a sub-arena
and a training room and can be reached by a 15-minute bus ride from JR Nishi-Kagoshima Station.
女子の開幕戦（Site B）が行われる鹿児島市は、九州最南端に位置。明治の偉人、西郷隆盛
や大久保利通を生んだ土地として知られる。現在も南九州の経済・文化の中心地とし
て栄え、錦江湾に浮かぶ桜島の景観を求めて多くの観光客が訪れる。ワールドカップの

制100周年を記念して建てられた。5,700席の観覧席を持つメインアリーナ、

Sendai, whose population exceeded one million in 1999, is the only ordinance-designated city in
the Tohoku district, the northern region of Japan's main island, Honsyu and has been flourishing
as the political, economic and cultural centre of the Tohoku district. In 1953 Sendai's involvement
in volleyball started and it organized the first international volleyball competition, All Hong Kong
vs. All Sendai. Since then, almost every year some international competitions have been hosted.
Two men's tournaments and three women's tournaments took place in Sendai so far and this
year's tournament will be the 6th. The Sendai City Gym is a well-equipped sports complex with
the first gym (three volleyball courts), the second gym (one volleyball court) and a swimming
pool in an annex. It is 6km from Sendai Station and is easily accessible by underground.

東北地方唯一の政令指定都市として東北
の政治、
経済、
文化の中心地として栄えてきた。バレーとのつながりも古く1953年に全香
港対全仙台の国際大会を開催したのを皮切りに毎年のように国際大会を開催。ワール
ドカップもこれまで男子を2回、
女子を3回開催しており、

バレーボールコート3面が取れる第1競技場と1面の第2競技場、

Toyama, where, as well as the previous World Cup in 1999, the women's tournament will take place is a
city that is surrounded by the native beauty of Japan's scenic mountains, the Northern Alps, and the Bay
of Toyama which is famous for the mirage - the altitude drop between them is 3000m. Toyama has been
well known for pharmacy for over 300 years and there are many pharmaceutical laboratories. In Toyama,
people are extremely enthusiastic about volleyball and a great number of international competitions have
been staged. Toyama will host the World Cup twice in succession, following the previous competition.
The Toyama City Gym was completed just before the previous World Cup and was the main competition
site for the National Athletic Meet in 2000. As it is very easily accessible - 5 to 6 minutes walk from JR
Toyama Station - it is assumed that many volleyball enthusiasts from the Kansai area will visit Toyama.

楼で有名な富山湾まで、
標高差が実に3000mに達する大自然に囲まれた街。300年の歴
史を誇る薬の街としても知られ薬品の研究開発施設も多い。バレーボールに対する関心も
高く、
多くの国際大会を開催、
ワールドカップも2大会連続開催となる。会場の富山市総合
体育館は前回のワールドカップ開催直前に完成、
2000年には国体会場ともなった。JR富山
駅から徒歩5∼6分というアクセスのよさから、
関西圏からの観戦者も多いと予想される。

The finale of the 2003 women's World Cup will be performed in Osaka. Osaka, a mammoth city like Tokyo, has
been flourishing as a commercial centre for ages, and its business people have been called "Naniwa-Merchants" Naniwa is the former name of Osaka - and still it clings to its traditions. In the Kansai-area, whose centre is Osaka,
many volleyball teams of the V-League, the Japanese Volleyball Premier League, are based. Moreover, the Osaka
Prefectural Gymnasium is the regular competition site for the annual National Volleyball Championships in spring.
The Namihaya Dome, which was a competition site for the 98 World Championships and will be the stage for the
women's finale this year is a huge sports complex with 10000 seats and can be converted into a swimming pool in
summer, a skating rink in winter. In the other seasons, it is used for various sports activities such as volleyball.
今回の女子大会は大阪でフィナーレを迎える。東京と並ぶ巨大都市・大阪は、
“浪速商人”ということばがあるように古くから商業の
街として栄え、現在もその伝統が息づいている。大阪を中心とした関西圏にはVリーグチームも多く、また春には恒例の全日本選手
権が今大会の会場の一つでもある大阪府立体育会館で行われる。フィナーレのメイン会場となるなみはやドームは98年世界選手
権の舞台ともなった1万人収容の巨大ドームで、夏はプール、冬はスケート、春秋は体育館として使用される多目的スポーツ施設だ。

The World League 2003 (men) and the World Grand Prix 2003 (women), both of which
were in the spotlight as curtain raisers for the forthcoming World Cup 2003, have ended.
In the World League, the top eight teams which qualified for the Final Round in the
International Rounds, competed in the Final Round in Barcelona, Spain. Brazil has
defended its World No.1 title following the World Championship in 2002. The final match
between Brazil and Serbia and Montenegro (former Yugoslavia) was so close and exiting
that it is regarded as one of the best matches in volleyball history. Brazil, two sets behind
Serbia and Montenegro, caught up and proceeded to the tiebreak and overcame their
opponents 31-29. Italy and the Czech Republic ended up 3rd and 4th place respectively.
Fuji TV, the host TV Company for the World Cup 2003, has formed a special dancing
team for cheering the Japanese squads and rousing the spectators' enthusiasm at
competition venues. They were officially presented to the media and public in the
competition venue for the International Beach Volleyball 2003, which took place from
1st to 3rd August in Odaiba, Tokyo. The team is called SO-LE and it has two meanings.
One is the Sun in Italian and the other is the volleyball fans' call when players serve.
SO-LE is a professional dancing team produced by Ms. Tomoko Mita, who was a
member of the cheerleaders for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys in 1999 and 2000. Their
striking performance will make the World Cup 2003 more exciting and enthusiastic.

（女子）が
終了した。ワールドリーグは予選ラウンドの上位８チームがスペインのバルセロナに集まって決勝ラウン
ドを行い、
ブラジルが昨年の世界選手権に続いて王者を守った。決勝のセルビア・モンテネグロ
（旧ユ
ーゴスラビア）戦は球史に残る接戦となり、
２セットダウンから盛り返してフルセットに持ち込んだブラジ
ルが、
第５セット31-29で熱戦に終止符を打った。
３位にはイタリア、
４位にはチェコ共和国が入った。
大会ホスト局であるフジテレビでは、
「ワールドカップ2003」の熱気をさらに高めるために、会場を盛り上げ、
全日本を熱く応援するスペシャル応援団を結成。8月1日から3日まで東京・お台場で開催された「インターナシ
ョナル・ビーチバレー2003」の会場で公開記者発表のかたちで大々的にお披露目した。チームはイタリア語で
太陽を意味するSOLEと、
バレーボールの試合で選手がサーブを打つときに観客が掛けるかけ声の「ソーレ！」
から取って「SO-LE」と命名されたプロ集団。1999年・2000年のNFLダラスカウボーイズチアリーダーの三田
智子さんがプロデュースし、今までにないパフォーマンスでワールドカップを盛り上げていくことになった。
Due to an epidemic SARS, which broke out in many Asian countries, the competition
venues for the World Grand Prix 2003 were relocated to Italy. China, which, as a result of
the 3rd place in the preliminary round, barely managed to qualify for the final round, won
the World Grand Prix 2003, having won all of their five matches in the final round. The
defending champion, Russia, took second place and the USA, champions in 2001, ended
up in 3rd place. The winner of the World Championship in 2002, Italy, was 5th .
ワールドグランプリはアジアでのサーズ騒動の影響で会場をイタリアに移して開催。予選ラウンドを
３位でぎりぎり通過した中国が決勝ラウンドでは５戦全勝という強さを発揮して初優勝を飾った。昨年
優勝のロシアが２位、
一昨年優勝のアメリカが３位。世界選手権覇者のイタリアは５位に終わった。

The continental Championships for qualifying for the World Cup have started.
Firstly, the Men's African Nations Championship took place in Cairo, Egypt,
1st to 6th August and Tunisia became the first continental champion which
