青野川の上流には蛇石と呼ばれるヘビの形をした岩があり

ます。地域の伝説によると、昔、大池に棲んでいた巨大な

ヘビが2.4km離れた川に水を飲みにきた時に石にされて
おおいけ
しまい、川には頭部の、大池にはしっぽの形をした岩が残
ったということです。この不思議な形をした岩がどのよう
にしてできたのかは（科学的には）わかっていません。
In the upper reaches of the Aono River lies a rock known as "Hebiishi"
("snake rock"), so-called for its snake-like form. According to local
legend, a huge snake that inhabited the Oike marsh was turned into
stone when it moved to drink at a river 2.4 km distant. It is said that the
snake left its head in the river, and its tail at Oike marsh, in the form of
rocks. No scientific explanation has been found for why these rocks are
shaped the way they are.

Volcanic ejecta contain many cracks and gaps, in which a great deal of
groundwater accumulates. However, in the strata from ancient submarine volcanoes, these cracks solidly are filled in, making it difficult for
groundwater to pass through. Groundwater gushes out from the foot of
the Jaishi volcano, which lies on the top of submarine volcano strata that
does not allow water to pass through easily. This water is the source of
the Aono River, and of the water used in terraced rice fields.

The collision start
Izu began to collide with the island of Honshu after a
long period of submarine volcanic activity around
two million years ago. This collision caused the Izu to
rise, so that by one million years ago almost the entire
area had become land, and by 600,000 years ago the
Izu peninsula had taken its present form. A period of
terrestrial volcanism began around this time. Many of
the terrestrial volcanoes active here were polygenetic
volcanoes, which erupt repeatedly in almost the same
place, forming a large mountain.
Jaishi is an old volcano that formed in eruptions between 1.3 and 1.4 million years ago. Although erosion
has made the position of the crater of Jaishi and the
shape of its base difficult to distinguish, it retains the
gradual slope characteristic of a volcano. The sunny,
gentle slopes of this plateau are home to many
mountain plants such as the Kaempfer azalea (which
blooms in May), allowing visitors to enjoy the sight of
flowers in any season.

Regions formed from the ejecta of ancient submarine volcanoes are shaped into countless mountains and
valleys over millennia by the forces of erosion. Minami Izu has many such areas, amidst which a gently
rolling plateau extends around the area of the Jaishi volcano. This volcano was active after Izu collided
with the island of Honshu. Ejecta from its eruptions filled in these precipitous valleys to create this broad
expanse.
