The Galatea Pearl is the world’s only
cultured pearl with a brilliant gemstone
center, hand carved to let the gem’s
color shine through.
When an oyster swallows a grain of sand it
feels the discomfort, so it begins to ease the
pain by applying a coat of nacre (pearl). It
is during this healing process that it creates
a beautiful pearl. This is like life itself. It
is easy to love in good times, but it takes
courage to love through the discomfort of
our lives. The turquoise represents the
grain of sand, the beauty inside evoking an
aura of love, courage and healing. It is this
unique transformation that has given birth to
the "Galatea Pearl” the symbol of love.

photography. The first revelation is of the persistent beauty of our
islands even when the sun disappears to leave room for clouds and
rain. This particular weather is distinguishable by the exceptional
radiance and colors bathing and glorifying our landscapes. By the
same token, new panoramas of Tahiti are viewable via soaring
through the sky in a parachute, paraglider, or paramotor. These aerial
gliding experiences—not necessarily limited to experts—are a fun way
to discover our exquisite landscapes.
This playground attracts the most daring sky explorers, as you’ll
see in the photo of the base-jump executed on the tiny island of
Maupiti, or the discovery of Marquesan and Tuamotuan skies by a
group of paragliders who are traveling the world in search of the
most beautiful spots. Here, we’ll share their celestial odyssey. Just
as spectacular are the faces of artistic diversity in French Polynesia.
From meeting the King of Tahiti, a singer passionate about the great
Elvis Presley, to the painters who in the wake of the immeasurable
Paul Gauguin at the end of the 19th century, were inspired by the
light and life of our islands…and ending with graffiti street artists

unique marié à des
sensations inédites.
Mais c’est aussi dans
les airs que se dévoile
toute la beauté de nos
îles avec des activités
telles le parachutisme
et le parapente.

On commence plutôt en douceur avec
une discipline pourtant très addictive :
le parapente. Ce sport consiste à exploiter
les «ascendances», en fait des courants
d’air chaud montants, pour rester le plus
longtemps possible en vol (un vol dure
au minimum 15 minutes ici). Ce qui laisse
donc tout le loisir d’admirer les paysages
sublimes de Tahiti. Le «paradis» se dévoile
alors sous un angle nouveau avec une
facilité déconcertante. En biplace, c’est-àdire lors d’un vol en tandem encadré par
un moniteur, le passager «en prend plein
les yeux» ! Tout en douceur et en fluidité,
les parapentistes glissent, profitant des
fameux courants ascendants générés
notamment par les reliefs. Sur l’île de
Tahiti, avec le club Air Évasion Tahiti,
une association de bénévoles passionnés
et diplômés, la pratique peut s’effectuer
300 jours par an. Une durée record sur une
année que l’on doit à notre climat aussi
propice qu’ensoleillé. Pour les débutants,
la découverte du parapente s’effectue en
toute sécurité et décontraction. Pas de
tenue particulière hormis des chaussures
fermées afin de ne pas les perdre en vol.
Pas de limite d’âge non plus : en biplace, le
passager le plus âgé du club avait 80 ans...
Point de départ : à côté de l’hôtel Le
Méridien, sur la côte Ouest de Tahiti.
Rassemblement, présentation, chargement
du 4x4 et départ vers le site de saut (une
propriété privée prêtée aux parapentistes).
Après 20 minutes de trajet en voiture (1h
de marche pour les plus motivés), l’espace
dédié à l’envol se dévoile. On y explique le
déroulement du vol, prépare l’aile et hop !
La préparation du matériel au sol est l’un
des grands avantages du parapente : on
évite la pression d’un pliage pointilleux et
indispensable de la voile, comme cela est
le cas avant un saut en parachute.

There are so many different ways to explore French
Polynesia, through deep sea diving, cruises, excursions,
hiking trails or horse rides. Each one offers a unique
experience, but all the beauty of our islands can unfold
from the sky with activities such as skydiving and
paragliding.

We’ll start off somewhat slower with an
addictive activity: paragliding. This sport
consists of riding thermal updrafts over
warm air currents to remain in flight as
long as possible (an average flight lasts 15
minutes in Tahiti), which leaves plenty of
time to admire Tahiti’s stunning scenery.
With paragliding, paradise gently reveals
itself through a new lens. In a two-seater
or tandem flight strapped next to a pilot,
passengers get an eyeful. Paragliders
soar smoothly and fluidly, enjoying the
impressive thermal currents that hilly
areas can generate. Club Air Évasion Tahiti,
an association of passionate volunteer and
licensed paragliders located in Tahiti, offers
paragliding 300 days a year. This is record
time for an entire year due to a climate that
is as favorable as it is filled with sunshine.
For beginners, discovering paragliding
is safe and relaxed. Closed shoes are
required so that you don’t lose them in

flight. There isn’t an age limit either. For a
tandem flight, the club’s eldest passenger
was 80 years-old. The point of departure
is next to Le Méridien hotel on the west
coast of Tahiti. After gathering, there is a
presentation, then the 4X4 is loaded and
takes off for the jump site, which is private
property on loan to paragliders. After a
20 minute drive (an hour hike for those
who are more adventurous), the space
dedicated to the flight comes into view.
The guides then brief you for takeoff, then
the wing gets attached, and off you go!
Preparing the equipment on the ground
is one of the great advantages of
paragliding, as you avoid the pressure of
the indispensable and meticulous folding
of the gear, such as before a parachute
jump. The instructors, all seasoned and
licensed paragliders, debrief and guide you
in order to offer you a most unforgettable
experience. Takeoff is the only technical
detail needing your active participation.
You have to run and pedal somewhat in
mid-air once you leave firm ground. Then
you don’t have to do anything except
admire the views and enjoy the ride.
Lightness and fluidity are the adjectives
that come to mind for novices and expert
flyers alike. Paragliding is an extremely
exhilarating activity. Watch out! You may
become addicted!
Sky Diving: Dare to free
fall
Let’s switch gears. We’ll stay in the air
of course, but we’ll go higher and faster.
Opposite of paragliding where we take our
time to the rhythm of the wind currents,
sky diving is much more rapid. You’ll be in
a state of pure adrenaline rush. Your sail is
not there to serve as a wing to glide through
the air, but rather to work as a brake.

> Les instructeurs, tous parapentistes chevronnés et diplômés, vous
débriefent et vous guident pour vous offrir un moment inoubliable. Le
décollage est la seule étape technique nécessitant votre participation
active : vous devez courir, quitte à pédaler un peu dans le vide une
fois quittée la terre ferme. Ensuite, vous n’avez rien d’autre à faire que
d’admirer le paysage et profiter de la promenade. Fluidité et légèreté
sont les qualificatifs qui reviennent dans la bouche des novices
comme des volants expérimentés. Le parapente est une activité
extrême très grisante. Attention, vous risquez fort d’y prendre goût !
Le parachute : oser la chute libre
Changement de catégorie. On reste dans les airs, certes, mais on va
plus haut et plus vite. A l’inverse du parapente où l’on prend son temps
au gré des courants, le saut est évidemment plus court. On est dans
le «shoot» d’adrénaline pur. La voile ne sert pas d’aile pour planer,
elle est là pour freiner. Un saut est très rapide puisque l’on chute en
moyenne 40 secondes avant de déployer le parachute, pour ensuite
piloter la voile pendant environ 5 minutes et atterrir. Avant tout
vol, les parachutistes diplômés et ultra expérimentés du club Tahiti
Parachutisme vous brieferont un bon quart d’heure : du décollage à
l’atterrissage, rien n’est laissé au hasard pour une sécurité maximale.
Ensuite, direction l’avion pour les sauts à Moorea (ou l’hélicoptère
pour les baptêmes sur Bora Bora) pour près de 20 minutes de vol, le
temps d’atteindre l’altitude de largage, soit près de 3 200 mètres. Puis
c’est le grand saut, le moment de se lancer (ou plutôt de se jeter dans

le vide) pour une chute libre à 200 km/h.

A skydive happens very fast since the average jump lasts
40 seconds before the parachute is deployed, then you fly
the parachute for about five minutes before landing. Before
each flight, highly experienced and licensed parachutists
from Tahiti Parachutisme (Tahiti Skydiving) will brief you
for at least fifteen minutes. To assure safety from takeoff
to landing, they don’t leave anything out. Then, you’ll take
the plane for jumps over Moorea (or the helicopter for first
flights over Bora Bora). It takes about a twenty-minute flight
to reach the altitude above the drop zone (usually about
3200 meters/10,500 ft). Then it is time for the big jump,
the moment you throw yourself into space for a freefall at
200km/h (125mph). Euphoria is guaranteed due to the rush:
the butterflies before the jump, the love of speed, the feeling
of freedom, the wind on your skin, landscapes that take your
breath away…All those who have done it will tell you that sky
diving is indescribable and absolutely exhilarating! But this
isn’t a reason to take careless risks. Just as in all sports, there
are some rules. A medical certificate is mandatory for minors
and people over 60 (At Tahiti Parachutisme club, people
between the ages of 12 to 80 have jumped). It is prohibited to
scuba dive within 24 hours before jumping. Apart from this,
you must come with a full stomach, be sober, wear closed
shoes, and have a desire to enjoy yourselves. Get ready for
stunning views and an amazing experience…

avant la chute, le plaisir de la vitesse, la sensation de liberté, le
vent sur sa peau, les paysages à couper le souffle… Le parachute,
tous ceux qui l’ont testé vous le diront : c’est indescriptible…
et extrêmement exaltant ! Mais ce n’est pas une raison pour
prendre des risques inconsidérés, aussi, comme dans toute
pratique sportive, quelques précautions s’imposent. Avant
un saut, la plongée sous-marine est à proscrire dans les 24h
précédentes. Certificat médical obligatoire pour les mineurs
et les plus de 60 ans. Ensuite, pas de limite d’âge. Au club
Tahiti Parachutisme, on a eu l’occasion de sauter avec des
personnes de 12 à 80 ans. Hormis cela, on vous demandera
seulement de venir le ventre plein, sobre, avec des chaussures
fermées et l’envie de vous faire plaisir. Préparez-vous à en
prendre plein la vue et à vivre des sensations inédites...
Des sports à forts potentiels
Très touristiques, puisque proposant à ceux qui les pratiquent
régulièrement où les essayent des panoramas uniques
et majestueux, ces sports de glisse ne demandent qu’à se
développer. Quelques obstacles sont cependant à lever dont
le peu d’accessibilité aux sites de sauts. Les hauteurs sauvages

des îles hautes de Polynésie n’ont en effet pas livré tous leurs
secrets. Entre lieux inaccessibles ou propriétés privées, les
aficionados de parapente et parachute sont pour l’instant,
limités. De plus, les points d’impact (lieu d’atterrissage), sont
eux aussi difficiles à trouver sur la mince bande côtière des
îles souvent densément peuplées. Malgré tout, les disciplines
existent et se développent, notamment sur l’île de Tahiti.
Les parachutistes y trouveront leur bonheur avec des sauts
effectués du côté de Moorea, et les parapentistes peuvent
donc compter sur le spot de la côte Ouest de Tahiti. De
plus, l’archipel des Marquises avec ses îles hautes et leurs
imposants reliefs sont aussi des «spots» où des sports comme
le parapente trouveraient des terrains de jeux idéals. Le
potentiel est donc réel. Pour les accros aux sensations fortes
voulant encore plus de liberté, il existe aussi d’autres formes
de glisses aériennes. Mais elles sont, pour l’instant, réservées
aux particuliers et ne donnent pas lieu à des activités
touristiques : le paramoteur, en fait un parapente muni d’une
petit moteur qui permet de décoller d’un terrain plat et de
gagner de l’altitude et l’hydro-ULM, un ULM amphibie, idéal
évidemment pour nos îles !

Sports with a lot
of potential for
development
Primarily available to tourists, although
these gliding sports offer unique and
majestic panoramas to those who practice
on a regular basis, there is still a long
way to go as far as their development.
There are some obstacles in the way,
such as limited access to jump sites.
The wild summits of French Polynesia’s
high islands still have many secrets to
unveil. Between inaccessible points and
private property, paragliding and skydiving
enthusiasts are somewhat limited for the
time being. Moreover, the impact points
(landing spots) are difficult to find on slim
coastlines in densely populated areas.
Despite everything, these two sports exist
and are in development, especially in Tahiti.
Skydivers find their thrills with jumps off
the coast of Moorea, and paragliders can
count on their spot on the west coast of
Tahiti. The Marquesas Archipelago, with
its high islands and impressive cliffs, has
ideal areas for sports such as paragliding.
The potential for expansion is definitely
real. For adrenaline junkies yearning for
even more freedom, there are other kinds
of gliding sports. However, for now, they
are restricted to private individuals and
do not exist yet as a tourist activity. These
include paramotoring, which is a paraglide
equipped with a small motor that allows
taking off and gaining altitude from a flat
surface, and the hydro-ULM, an ultra light
motorized amphibian. Both are obviously
ideal for our islands!

Base jumping: a first for the
island of Maupiti
Base jumping is a variation of skydiving that
entails extreme jumping par excellence. It is
executed closer to the ground and the elements,
which accentuates the thrills. In fact, it is all about
jumping from an altitude, whether from a natural
point (such as a summit or cliff), or from an artificial
point (such as a bridge or a building). This sport is
obviously reserved for elite jumpers. Jumpers need
to be very experienced at a high level of freefalling.
Base jumping also requires a strategic location
and very favorable weather conditions. There
should little to no wind (especially not a head-on
or crosswind that could send you into the wall of
the exit point). In French Polynesia, it is rare to
have a complete absence of wind in order to jump.
When this happens, the window is very narrow
and there is no room to improvise. Further, it is
virtually impossible to access areas high enough
to jump, which complicates things somewhat. In
a nutshell, it is impossible to safely base jump
in French Polynesia. This is why French extreme
athlete and confirmed base jumper, Rodolphe
Cassan, attempted it. He threw himself off the top
of Mount Taeura Faatiu on the island of Maupiti
and landed 30 seconds later at sea level on the
pier. Cassan, along with his companions, went on
several scouting and trail-marking expeditions,
since there wasn’t a trail that connected to the
exit point. With the help of a laser rangefinder,
he calculated the angle and altitude to assure the
feasibility of the attempt. Then it was the moment
to jump. The first jump was a test with a quick
release of the parachute. The second one was for
real. Cassan and his friends gave themselves a
five-day meteorological window. They had to act
quickly to cut out the access path, scout locations,
and perform the jumps. Ben Thouard captured the
results in images. Pure magic!

Base jump : une première sur l’île de
Maupiti
Le base jump est une variante du parachutisme. Il est le saut de l’extrême
par excellence. Plus proche du sol et de l’élément, les sensations sont
accrues. En fait, il s’agit «simplement» de sauter d’une hauteur qu’elle
soit naturelle (pics, falaises etc...) ou artificielle (pont, building etc...)
Évidemment, ce sport est réservé à une élite. Il nécessite déjà pour
son pratiquant un très haut niveau de pratique en chute libre. Le basejump requiert aussi des lieux parfaitement adaptés et des conditions
météorologiques très favorables : pas de vent ou très peu (surtout pas
une brise de face ou de travers qui pourrait vous renvoyer contre la paroi
du point d’exit). En Polynésie, il est rare que l’absence totale de vent
puisse permettre de sauter. Quand c’est le cas, la fenêtre météorologique
est très courte et ne laisse pas de place à l’improvisation. De plus,
l’accessibilité à des hauteurs suffisantes de saut n’est pas au rendezvous, ce qui complique un peu plus les choses. En gros, il est quasiment
impossible de base jumper en Polynésie en toute sécurité. C’est
pourquoi le saut du Français Rodolphe Cassan, sportif de l’extrême et
base jumper confirmé, est proche de l’exploit.
Il s’est élancé du haut de la montagne de l’île de Maupiti, le Taeura
Faatiu, pour atterrir sur le quai au niveau de la mer, quelques 30
secondes plus tard. Avec ses compagnons, Rodolphe Cassan a effectué
plusieurs randonnées de repérages et de balisage du chemin, le sentier
passant par la crête étant inexistant pour rejoindre le point d’exit. A
l’aide d’un télémètre laser, il a calculé angle et hauteur, s’assurant de la
faisabilité du projet. Puis c’est le moment de se lancer ; le premier saut
est un test avec ouverture rapide du parachute. Le second, c’est le bon.
Rodolphe Cassan et ses amis disposaient d’une fenêtre météorologique
de 5 jours, il leur fallait donc faire vite entre le tracé du chemin d’accès,
les différents repérages et les sauts. Le résultat a été immortalisé en
images par Ben Thouard. Magique.!

Search Projects :
Sky explorers in Tahiti
Survoler des lieux et paysages exceptionnels, de préférence situés
loin des contrées d’origine (France, USA, Angleterre) de ces sports
que sont le parapente et le paramoteur : telle est l’ambition qui
guide, depuis plus de trois ans, des parapentistes chevronnés
regroupés au sein du Search Projects. Un groupe unique dans
le monde du vol libre qui a posé ses valises et ses ailes pour la
première fois à Tahiti de décembre 2013 à février 2014.
Pendant trois mois, ces sportifs, photographes et caméramans ont
parcouru nos îles et plus particulièrement celles des Marquises,
propices au parapente, et, plus surprenant, celles des Tuamotu. En
s’élançant des hauteurs marquisiennes, ils ont réalisé des premières
dans le domaine du vol libre. Premières, également, lors des survols
des atolls des Tuamotu réalisés en paramoteur. Ce parapente muni
d’un moteur léger, porté sur le dos du pilote permet de décoller
puis de gagner de l’altitude sans devoir s’élancer d’une hauteur.
Évidemment, pour les plats atolls coralliens, un tel engin s’impose !
De ce «trip», comme on dit couramment dans les milieux de
la glisse, les aventuriers ont ramené des images et des vidéos
exceptionnelles où se dévoile toute la beauté de nos îles. Tahiti
s’est ainsi rajouté à leur imposant tableau de vols comptant des
périples en Amérique Centrale et en Amérique du Sud, en Afrique
et sur les hauteurs himalayennes du Pakistan. Là, se pratique
un parapente de l’extrême par la durée des vols et les altitudes
atteintes. De grandes aventures rendues possibles par le soutien
d’importants sponsors tels Red Bull, le constructeur automobile
allemand Volkswagen et le fabriquant de la célèbre mini-caméra
GoPro. Ces soutiens importants sont le signe de la singularité et
du caractère spectaculaire de cette quête. Cette dernière a sans
nul doute fait entrer le parapente dans une nouvelle dimension, en
lui permettant d’offrir des spectacles éblouissants auxquels sont

sensibles même les non-initiés.
For over three years now, the idea of paragliding and paramotoring
over areas with spectacular scenery, preferably located far away from
continents (such as France, USA, and England) is the motivating
factor behind Search Projects, a group of seasoned paragliders. This
unique group in the world of free flying put down luggage and wings
for the first time in Tahiti from December 2013 to February 2014. For
three months, athletes, photographers, and cameramen traveled the
islands, especially throughout the Marquesas which are conducive to
paragliding, and more surprisingly, the Tuamotus. They are the first
free flyers to have thrown themselves off Marquesan peaks. They were
also the first to glide over the Tuamotu atolls with a paramotor, which
is a paraglider equipped with a light motor that the pilot wears on his
back. The motor allows for takeoff and altitude gain without having
to jump from a certain height. Obviously, such a motor is necessary
for flat coral atolls! For this “trip,” as they say in gliding lingo, these
adventurers took exceptional photos and video footage that reveal all
the magnificence of our islands. Tahiti has now been added to their
impressive list of flights that include journeys to South and Central
America, Africa, and Himalayan heights of Pakistan, where extreme
paragliding takes place due to the length of the flights and attainable
altitudes. These epic adventures are made possible by the support
of big sponsors such as Red Bull, Volkswagen, and the makers of
the famous GoPro mini-camera. This significant sponsorship is a
sign of the uniqueness and spectacular features of this quest, which
has without a doubt launched paragliding into a new dimension,
allowing it to offer breathtaking spectacles that even non-experienced
paragliders can appreciate. The experience of the two main Search
Project pilots is important to note. Originally from Spain, Horacio
Llorens is four-time world paragliding champion in several categories
of this sport (aerobatics, cross-country, and Freeride).

> L’expérience des deux principaux pilotes protagonistes du Search
Projects est aussi à relever. Originaire d’Espagne, Horacio Llorens,
est quatre fois champion du monde de parapente dans diverses
disciplines de ce sport (acrobatie, cross et Freeride). Son complice,
Thomas de Dorlodot dit Tom, en provenance de Belgique, est lui
aussi une «pointure» dans le domaine du vol libre. Lors de leur séjour
en Polynésie française, ils ont été accompagnés du photographe
John Stapels et des caméramans Benoît Delfosse et Adrien Nisan.
Des professionnels venus avec l’objectif évident de faire partager
au plus grand nombre cette découverte des îles polynésiennes par
les airs. Leurs images alimentent abondamment le site Internet et
les réseaux sociaux dédiés au Search Projects. Pour l’anecdote, en
Polynésie, ces chevaliers du ciel sont devenus aussi...des marins. Ils
ont embarqué sur un catamaran pour parcourir les archipels des
Marquises et des Tuamotu au départ de Tahiti. Un choix adapté
non seulement pour le transport des quelque 500 kg de matériel de
l’expédition mais aussi pour découvrir dans de bonnes conditions
les meilleurs spots. De Nuku Hiva à Fatuiva en passant par Ua
Huka et Ua Pou, les îles Marquises n’ont pas déçu par leurs hauts
reliefs et leurs puissants courant ascendants. À l’issue de ce séjour,
l’équipe a tenu à souligner sa complicité avec les parapentistes
locaux qui leur ont réservé leur meilleur accueil. Complicité aussi
avec l’un des «princes» de la glisse tahitienne : Raimana Van
Bastolaer. Ce dernier leur a fait découvrir son «royaume», le spot
de Teahupo’o. Et, en échange, il a pu lui aussi s’élancer aux côtés de
ces merveilleux fous volants. Une rencontre au sommet entre des
passionnés de glisse ! Des rencontres qui ne demandent qu’à se
prolonger car les parapentistes souhaitent, bien sûr, revenir à Tahiti
pour «défricher» de nouveaux terrains de jeu !

in the world of free flying. During their stay in French Polynesia, they

the ultimate goal of sharing their exploration of French Polynesia
by air with the most people possible. Their images saturate the
Internet as well as social networking sites dedicated to Search
Projects. Incidentally, while in French Polynesia, these sky riders
also became…sailors. They embarked on a catamaran from Tahiti to
sail through the Archipelagoes of the Marquesas and the Tuamotus.
They made this trip not only to transport their 500kg/1100lb of
expedition materials, but also to be in a position to scout the best
spots and conditions. From Nuku Hiva to Fatuiva passing by Ua
Huku and Ua Pou, the Marquesas certainly did not disappoint with
its high peaks and powerful thermal updrafts. Throughout their
stay, the team held true to its desire to develop friendships with
local paragliders who provided them with a warm welcome. They
became friends with one the “princes” of Tahitian surfing: Raimana
Van Bastolaer. Raimana showed them his “kingdom,” the spot at
Teahupo’o. In exchange, he got to jump alongside these marvelous,
passionate flyers. What a coming together of gliding enthusiasts
at the summit! These encounters are bound to last, since the
paragliders of course wish to return to Tahiti to investigate new
playing fields!

地上の楽園
ダイビングにクルージング、現
地ツアー、ハイキング、乗馬ツ
アーなど、ポリネシアを発見し
楽しむ方法はたくさんある。そ
れぞれの方法にポリネシアの異
なる表情との出会いがあり、そ
のアクティビティでしか得られ
ない感動の体験ができる。しか
し、スカイダイビングやパラグ
ライダーで空から眺めるタヒチ
の島々は、さらに惜しげもなく
その美しさの全貌を見せてくれ
る。これまでにない、すばらし
い発見だ。

一度やるととりこになってしまう強烈さ
の割に、パラグライダーのスタートは意
外に穏やかでスムーズだ。パラグライダ
ーは、上昇気流を利用して空中をなるだ
け長時間飛行して、ゆっくりと地上に降
りていく。ちなみに、タヒチでの飛行時
間の最長記録は１５分間で、つまり、こ
の間ずっと、タヒチのすばらしい景色
をエンジョイすることができるというわ
けだ。パラグライダーを使うと、ちょっ
と当て外れなほど簡単に、南の楽園タヒ
チを新しい角度から発見することができ
る。２人乗りのタンデム飛行だと操作は
インストラクターにお任せで、つまり、
安心して美しい景色を満喫できる。パラ
グライダーは、タヒチの起伏の多い地形
によって発生する上昇気流に乗って、ふ
わりふわりと、実になめらかに空を滑っ
ていく。
タヒチ島では、ライセンス所有の地元
愛好家たちが作ったエール・エヴァジョ
ン・タヒチというボランティア組織のク
ラブを利用して、パラグライダーを１年
に３００日楽しむことができる。年間記
録であるこの長い飛行日数は、パラグラ
イディングに適したタヒチの気候と地形
のおかげである。パラグライダーでは、
たとえ初心者でも、ストレスの少ないリ
ラックスした飛行を安全に実行すること
ができる。注意することといえば、飛行

中に履物が落ちてしまわないように足を
しっかりと包む靴を履くことくらいで、
特に服装の指定もない。また、年齢制限
もなく、２人乗りの最高齢者は８０歳と
いうことである。
集合場所はタヒチ島西海岸のホテル、
ル・メリディアン・タヒチの近く。メン
バー紹介の後、四輪駆動車に装備を積み
込んで、離陸地点に向けて出発する。ク
ラブが私有地をパラグライダー用に借り
ている離陸地点まで車で２０分ほどなの
で、山歩きが好きな人なら徒歩で約１時
間の道のりを登ってもいいだろう。スタ
ートする前に、どういうふうにフライト
が進行するかの説明を受け、次に翼を準
備して、いよいよテイクオフだ。装備を
地上で準備できることは、パラグライダ
ーの大きな利点のひとつで、つまり、パ
ラシュートのように翼を入念に折りたた
まなければならないストレスを避けるこ
とができる。インストラクターはライ
センス所有のベテラン揃いで、タヒチで
のパラグライディングが忘れられない思
い出となるようにブリーフィングとガ
イド役を引き受けている。パラグライダ
ーで参加者ががんばる必要があるのは、
唯一、テイクオフの時だ。助走では、地
面を離れた瞬間に空中で足踏みするくら
いに、思い切り走る。そして一旦テイ
クオフしてしまえば、あとは景色を楽し
んで、空中散歩を満喫するだけ。パラグ
ライダーでのフライトの後の感想では、
ビギナー、ベテランにかかわらず「滑ら
か」「軽やか」という形容を多く耳にす
る。そう、パラグライダーは人を酔わせ
るエクストリームスポーツなのである。
ハマってしまう可能性大なので、ご用心
ご用心！
思い切って自由落下、スカイ
ダイビング
さて、同じスカイスポーツといっても、
パラグライダーより高度もスピードも格
段にレベルアップするのがスカイダイビ
ングだ。気流に乗ってゆったりと降下す
るパラグライダーと違って、スカイダイ
ビングは興奮のアドレナリンに酔う短時
間の飛行だ。スカイダイビングのパラシ
ュートは、滑空するためではなく、落下
スピードにブレーキをかけるための装備
である。スカイダイビングでは、飛行機
を飛び出してパラシュートを開くまでの
自由落下時間が平均４０秒、開いた後着
陸まで約５分と、とても短時間にフライ
トが凝縮されている。
スカイダイビングを始める前には、ライ
センス所有で経験豊かなタヒチ・パラシ
ューティングクラブのスカイダイバーか
ら１５分あまりの入念なブリーフィングを受ける。特
に安全対策については、離陸から着陸までのどの段階
にも最大限の配慮を怠らない。次に飛行機に乗って、
モーレア島でのジャンプに向けて、約３２００ｍの
高度まで約２０分間かけて上昇する（ボラボラ島での
未経験者向け体験ジャンプはヘリコプター利用）。そ
していよいよ、時速２００ｋｍの自由落下に身を乗り
出す、というより空間に身を投げ出す瞬間がやってく
る。跳び出す前の興奮、自由落下の圧倒的なスピード
感、大空を全く自由に飛ぶ感覚、肌に受ける強い風、
息を呑むような景色と、いずれ劣らぬ強烈な感覚が連
続するスカイダイビングは、陶酔感が保証付きだ。
スカイダイビングをやったことのある人は誰でも、「
とても言い表せない、本当に強烈な興奮」と語る。し
かし、だからといって無謀なリスクを取ってもよい理
由はもちろんなく、他のスポーツと同じように、必ず
守らなければならないことがいくつかある。まず、ジ
ャンプの前２４時間はスキューバダイビングを控える
こと。また、未成年者（１８歳未満）と６０歳以上は
医師による診断書が義務付けられている。年齢制限は
なく、タヒチ・パラシューティングクラブでは１２歳
から８０歳までの幅広い年齢層のスカイダイビングの
実績がある。このほか、ちゃんと食事をとっているこ
と、飲酒していないこと、靴着用、そして何より「ス
カイダイビングを楽しむ意欲」が要求される。さあ、
あなたも目もくらむような体験、かつてない強烈な感
覚の瞬間を味わう覚悟を決めてください。
大きな発展が期待できるスポーツ
ビギナー、経験者にかかわらず、ポリネシアだけでし
か見られない雄大な展望を満喫できるという点で、パ
ラシュートもパラグライダーも観光の面から見て非常
に大きな意味があり、今後の発展が大いに期待される
分野である。ただし、テイクオフ地点までのアクセス
が非常に限られていることなど、発展を助けるために
はいくつかの障害を乗り越える必要があることも確か
だ。ポリネシアの火山島は起伏が激しく、その険しさ
のためにめったに人が行かない手付かずの峰は、そう
簡単には秘密のベールを落としてはくれない。テイク
オフに適した高地でも、険しすぎてアクセス路が確保
されていなかったり私有地だったりして、パラグライ
ダーやスカイダイビングの愛好家は今のところ実践フ
ィールドがかなり制限されている。さらに、島の海岸
地帯は細い帯状で人口が密集しているため、着地点を
見つけるのも容易ではない。しかし、それにもかかわ
らず、ポリネシアでスカイスポーツが実践され、特に
タヒチ島などで発展を続けている。スカイダイバーは
モーレア島上空でのジャンプに喜びを見出し、パラグ
ライダーにはタヒチ島西海岸のスポットがある。さら
に、マルケサス諸島にある起伏の険しい島々もうって
つけのスポットで、パラグライダーなどのスカイスポ
ーツに理想のフィールドになるだろう。
パラグライダーよりもっと自由に空を飛び回りたいと
いうエクストリーム・フリークには、さらに別のスカ
イスポーツがある。平地からでも離陸や高度を上げる
ことができるようにパラグライダーに小型モーターを
付けたパラモーターや、タヒチの島々にうってつけの
水陸両用バージョンのマイクロライトプレーン（超軽
量動力機）などだ。ただし、これらのスポーツは現在
のところ個人での実践に限られていて、観光アクティ
ビティにはまだなっていない。

マウピティ島で初のベースジャンプ
ベースジャンプはスカイダイビングから派生したスポーツ
で、典型的なエクストリームスポーツに分類される。スカ
イダイビングに比べ地上や障害物との距離が近いので、その
分、強烈なスリルを味わうことができる。ベースジャンプ
は、険しい峰や断崖などの自然の場所、橋桁やビルなど人工
建造物の高い場所から「単に飛び降りる」というもので、非
常に危険なため上級者に限られたスポーツである。ベースジ
ャンプを実践するには、まず、非常に高いレベルの自由落下
技術が要求される。また、ベースジャンプに完璧に適した場
所と気象条件が不可欠である。風は無風あるいはわずかな微
風でなければならず、ジャンパーを壁面側に押しやるような
正面や斜め方向からの風は絶対に避けなければならない。ポ
リネシアではベースジャンプができるような全くの無風状態
はめったにないし、たまたま無風の時があっても非常に短時
間しか続かないので、条件が良いからといってベースジャン
プに出かけるには無理がある。そのうえに、ベースジャンプ
ができるような高さの場所へのアクセス路はまずないので、
事情はさらに困難となる。まとめていえば、ポリネシアで安
全にベースジャンプを楽しむことは、残念ながら不可能に近
い。エクストリームスポーツのスペシャリストで優れたベ
ースジャンパー、ロドルフ・カッサン（フランス人）がフレ
ンチポリネシアで実現したベースジャンプが快挙とされるの
は、このためである。
カッサンは、マウピティ島のタエウラ・ファアティウ山頂か
ら飛び降り、約３０秒後に海抜ゼロの埠頭に着地した。マウ
ピティ島には、ジャンプができるような稜線に至る登山道は
存在しないので、ロドルフ・カッサンは仲間たちと一緒に何
回も山に登って下見をし、山道に目印を付けていった。角度
と高さはレーザー測距儀を使って計算し、マウピティ島ベー
スジャンプ計画が実現可能であることを確認した。このよう
な準備作業の後、いよいよジャンプを実行する時がやって来
た。第１回目のジャンプはパラシュートを素早く開くテスト
のためで、本番は２回目のジャンプだった。天気予報がロド
ルフ・カッサンと仲間たちに与えた日数は５日間だったの
で、アクセス路の確保と複数の場所の下見から本番ジャンプ
まで急を要する。このときのカッサンの快挙は、写真家ベ
ン・トゥアルドがすばらしい写真として残している。

タヒチの空を探検するサー
チ・プロジェクツ
パラグライダーとパラモーターの本拠地
（フランス、米国、イギリス）からなる
だけ離れた土地で、すばらしい景色・場
所の上空を飛びたいという熱い想いが、
パラグライダーの練達者が揃ったグルー
プ「サーチ・プロジェクツ」のこの３年
来の活動を導いてきた。スカイスポーツ
の世界でもユニークな存在であるサー
チ・プロジェクツは、２０１３年１２月
から２０１４年２月まで、タヒチに初め
ての滞在をした。
パイロットに写真家とカメラマンで構成
するサーチ・プロジェクツのチームは、
フレンチポリネシアの島々を３ヶ月かけ
て巡り、パラグライダーに格好の地形の
マルケサス諸島はもちろん、意外にもツ
アモツ諸島でもフライトを楽しんだ。マ
ルケサス諸島の高い峰からテイクオフし
た飛行はフリーフライトの分野で初めて
の快挙であり、ツアモツ諸島の環礁の上
空をパラモーター（補助動力付のパラグ
ライダー）で飛んだのも、世界で最初だ
った。パラモーターはパイロットが小型
モーターを背負っているので、パラグラ
イダーと違って高度のない場所からでも
離陸して高度を上げることができる。サ
ンゴでできた平坦な環礁での飛行には不
可欠なギアだ。
スカイスポーツの世界では「トリップ」
と呼ばれるこの飛行で、サーチ・プロジ
ェクツのメンバーはタヒチの島々の美し
さを惜しみなく披露するすばらしい写真
やビデオを持ち帰り、これまでに彼ら
がすでに実現した中央アメリカと南ア
メリカ、アフリカ、パキスタンなど、サ
ーチ・プロジェクツのそうそうたる飛行
記録リストにタヒチが加わった。ちなみ
に、パキスタンで実現したフライトはヒ
マラヤの高さを飛ぶもので、飛行時間、
高度のいずれの点から見ても、正真正
銘、エクストリームスポーツのカテゴリ
ーに入るトリップである。
このようなスケールの大きな冒険プロジ
ェクトは、栄養ドリンクのレッドブルや
ドイツ車のフォルクスワーゲン、人気絶
頂の小型カメラGoPro(ゴープロ)などの
スポンサーの大きな支援があってこそ実
現したものだ。逆に言えば、これほどの
大型支援があるということは、サーチ・
プロジェクツのプロジェクトが他に類
のないすごい企画であることを示してい
る。ポリネシアでサーチ・プロジェクツ
が実現した最新パフォーマンスは、パラ
グライダーというスポーツを、スカイス
ポーツファンでなくても目を奪われずに
はいられないすばらしいエンターテイメ
ントにしてしまったという意味で、パラ
グライダーの新機軸を切り開いたことは
間違いない。
サーチ・プロジェクツの主要メンバーで
あるふたりのパイロットの輝かしい経歴
にも言及すべきであろう。スペイン人オ
ラシオ・ロレンスは、パラグライダーの
複数の種目（アクロバティック、クロス
カントリー、フリーライド）で４回世界
チャンピオンになった実績がある。相棒
のトムことトマ・ド・ドルロドはベルギ
ー人で、彼もパラグライダー界有数の実
力者である。フレンチポリネシアのプロ
ジェクトには写真家ジョン・ステープル
スとカメラマンのブノワ・デルフォス、
アドリアン・ニサンが同行しており、も
ちろん、映像のスペシャリストを揃えた
このチーム編成は、サーチ・プロジェク
ツのWEBサイトやソーシャルネットワ
ークを通じて、空から見たポリネシアの
島々のかつてない映像をより多くの人と
共有するためである。
余談になるが、いわば「空の騎士」であ
るサーチ・プロジェクツのメンバーは、
タヒチでは「海の男」になった。マルケ
サス諸島とツアモツ諸島を巡るため、彼
らはタヒチからカタマランヨットで出発
したのだ。これは、５００kgにもなる大
掛かりな装備を運ぶためだけでなく、最
高のスポットを見つけるのにもベストな
選択である。マルケサス諸島では、ヌク
ヒバ島からウアフカ島、ウアポウ島を経
てファトゥイバ島まで、期待通りの高山
と上昇気流に恵まれた。
ポリネシア滞在の後、サーチ・プロジェ
クツのメンバーは、彼らを温かく迎えて
くれた地元のパラグライダー愛好家たち
とのすばらしい交流について強調した。
また、タヒチのスライドスポーツ界の
プリンスのひとり、サーファーのライ
マナ・ヴァン・バストレルとの交流にも
言及した。ライマナは、伝説のサーフィ
ン・スポット、チョーポーを発見する機
会を彼らに与え、そのお返しに、このそ
うそうたるフライングマニアたちと一緒
に空に飛び出したのだ。この出会いは、
まるでスライドスポーツ界のトップ会
談、サミットだ。サーチ・プロジェクツ
のメンバーたちは、今回発見した新しい
フィールドをさらに開拓するため再びタ
ヒチに来ることを希望しているので、こ
のサミットが会期延長されることは間違
いない。

Combien sont-ils, musiciens, chanteurs,
à avoir eu une influence mondiale aussi
considérable au 20e siècle ? De qui, parmi
les précurseurs du Rock que furent
Bill Haley, Chuck Berry ou Bo Diddley,
fredonne-t-on encore les airs ?
Qui fait partie des légendes du rock,
au même titre que les Beatles ou les
Rolling Stones ? Et qui peut se targuer
d’avoir dans le monde des milliers de
sosies-imitateurs ? Le King bien sûr: Elvis
Presley. Même à Tahiti ? Oui, à Tahiti
aussi, et c’est une histoire comme on les
aime tant, dans nos îles.
How many musicians and singers had
such a huge global impact during the
20th century? Whose tunes do we still
hum along with all the Rock pioneers
such as Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, or Bo
Diddley? Who is one of the Rock legends
on the same level as the Beatles or
the Rolling Stones? Who can brag
about having thousands of lookalike
impersonators all over the world? The
King, of course: Elvis Presley. Even in
Tahiti? Yes, in Tahiti, too—and it is a story
just as we love them in our islands.

Un vent tiède souffle ce matin-là, presque trop chaud, entre les
purau du bord de mer et les frangipaniers qui embaument l’air.
Sans broncher, deux larges uru aux branches massives débordent
de la cour sur la rue et y dispensent une ombre bienfaisante. C’est
là que nous rencontrons le « King » de Tahiti, Rocky Gobrait.
La quarantaine approchant, un physique d’armoire à glace, il
nous accueille, généreux dans sa poignée de main. Son regard,
nostalgique et avenant, s’accompagne d’un sourire qui s’étire
jusqu’aux yeux. La voix est douce et s’enthousiasme dès qu’on
évoque Elvis. Rocky a un beau direct du gauche (il fut à quatre
reprises Champion de Polynésie de boxe), un sacré coup droit
au tennis, mais c’est Elvis qu’il a choisi. Quand certains destins
semblent tracés une fois pour toutes…
La gloire de mon père
En préambule, nous nous attardons sur ce prénom, Rocky,
qui interpelle. Tout commence au début des années 1970.
Son père, Hubert, déjà un boxeur, surnommé « le B52 », tel le
célèbre bombardier américain, avait beaucoup d’admiration
pour l’immense boxeur, invaincu, Rocky Marciano. Quand il le
rencontra en France, il lui promit qu’à la naissance de son futur
garçon, celui-ci se prénommerait Rocky. Une promesse respectée
dès le 20 septembre 1974. La boxe, passion familiale, forge les
premières années du personnage. Mais qu’en est-il de la passion
pour Elvis ? En fait, l’enfance du jeune Rocky est bercée par les
chansons rythmées ou tendres du King, qu’Hubert, mais aussi
toute la famille, écoute avec passion. La vie, avec ses surprises et
ses hasards, a fait le reste. Rocky n’est pas fait pour l’école, qu’il
quitte dès l’âge de 13 ans.

A warm wind, almost too hot, was blowing that morning
between the purau trees that lined the beach and the
frangipanis that filled the air with perfume. Without
hesitation, two large uru trees with their massive branches
hung from the yard over the street, providing welcome
shade. This is where we met Rocky Gobrait, the “King” of
Tahiti. Approaching his forties and built like a brick house, he
greeted us with a firm handshake. His nostalgic and likeable
demeanor accompanied a smile that stretched all the way to
his eyes. His voice was soft and got animated as soon as we
brought up Elvis. Rocky had a swift left swing (he was a fourtime Boxing Champion of French Polynesia) and an awesome
right forehand in tennis, but he chose Elvis. Sometimes a
destiny seems mapped out once and for all…
The glory of my father
Right away, we mulled over the name Rocky. It all began in the
early 1970s. His father Hubert was already a boxer, nicknamed
the «B52» after the famous American bomber. Hubert had a
great admiration for Rocky Marciano, the famous, undefeated
boxer. When he met Rocky Marciano in France, he promised
him that he would name his firstborn son Rocky. He fulfilled
this promise September 20, 1974. Boxing, a family passion,
forged Rocky’s early years, but where did this passion for Elvis
come from? In fact, young Rocky’s childhood swayed to the
tender songs and rhythms of the King, which Hubert and the
entire family listened to with passion. Life, with its surprises
and coincidences, took care of the rest. Rocky wasn’t made

for school, so he quit at 13-years-old.

> Grâce à son père qui possède des parts dans une affaire à
Hawaii, il se rend l’année suivante à Honolulu. Là, il découvre
le karaoké, dont c’était les débuts, rencontre des amis, fans
d’Elvis, qui a tant marqué cette terre d’Hawaii, part chanter
avec eux… D’un karaoké à l’autre, sa passion pour le King
s’enclenche presque naturellement. Il découvrira au fil des
ans qu’il partage avec le King certaines valeurs et la même
admiration pour certaines grandes figures tel Cassius Clay
(Mohammad Ali) ou Bruce Lee, entre autres. De retour à
Tahiti, à 17 ans, il avoue à son père qu’il veut être musicien.
Ce dernier le soutient aussitôt et lui construit un studio
dans le jardin familial. Il ne faut pas deux années pour que
Rocky soit sûr de lui : il sera un sosie d’Elvis. À 20 ans, il
achète son premier costume, Burning Love, pour 1400 $ !
Puis c’est le premier concert, celui du trac de se retrouver
enfin devant un public, son futur public, au Country Club.
Là, dans le soleil couchant de Punaauia sur l’île de Tahiti, les
gens sont debout ! Un succès qui ne s’est jamais démenti et
qui, depuis, fait vivre Rocky et sa famille.
Une vie consacrée à Elvis
Après ce premier succès, Rocky débute ses tournées, d’abord
dans les restaurants de Papeete, puis de plus en plus loin.
Car tous ses déplacements, tous ses voyages, se font au nom
du King. Les amis musiciens et choristes l’accompagnent en
Polynésie quand il s’agit de grands concerts. Puis, quand c’est
plus loin, il voyage en famille, avec sa femme Minarii, qui
gère toute la logistique, et avec ses enfants, notamment aux
États-Unis. C’est là en effet que les concours des meilleurs
imitateurs d’Elvis ont lieu : rien qu’à Las Vegas, il y en a
plus d’une douzaine par mois. Certains ne sont pas sérieux.
Heureusement, il y a de belles rencontres, notamment celle
avec Don Rose, l’un des meilleurs sosies d’Elvis, qui l’a
accueilli, guidé et avec qui il a beaucoup progressé. Avec
l’expérience, Rocky a appris à choisir les concours avec
soin. Son talent est là aussi reconnu : aux Championnats
du monde en 2005 à Memphis, lors de la fameuse « Elvis
Week » qui rassemble les meilleurs sosies, il termina 13e. Au
concours de l’hôtel Le Mirage à Las Vegas en 2011, il est au
pied du podium avec une 4e place ! Pour ces déplacements
internationaux, il peut d’ailleurs compter sur le soutien d’Air
Tahiti Nui, qui le sponsorise. Car vouloir ressembler à Elvis
a un coût. Rocky possède 13 costumes du King, tous achetés
à Memphis, pour une petite fortune. Il est en concert près de
quatre fois par semaine, ne passe jamais une grande fête du
calendrier en famille. Toute passion a un prix.

> Thanks to his father who owned shares in
a company in Hawaii, he took off the next
year for Honolulu. There, he discovered
Karaoke, which led to his making friends
who were Elvis fans. He sang with them and
this is what connected him deeply to the
land of Hawaii. From one Karaoke session
to another, his passion for the King simply
took off. He realized over the years that he
shared certain values with the King, as well
as his same admiration for certain famous
people, such as Cassius Clay (Mohammad
Ali) and Bruce Lee, among others. When
he returned to Tahiti at 17-years-old, he
admitted to his father than he wanted to
become a musician. His father instantly
supported him and built him a studio in the
backyard. About two years later, Rocky was
convinced that he wanted to become an
Elvis impersonator. By the time he was 20,
he bought his first costume, Burning Love,
for $1400 USD! Afterwards, he had his first
concert at the Country Club and his first
stage fright at finding himself in front of
an audience for the first time. There, under
the setting sun of Punaauia on the island
of Tahiti, people were on their feet! Ever
since, he has enjoyed a success that has
never waned, and that has allowed him to
support his family.
A life dedicated to Elvis
After this first success, Rocky started to
tour, first to Papeete’s restaurants, then
gradually farther away. He performs all his
trips and voyages in the name of the King.
His musician and singer friends accompany
him in French Polynesia when he has large
concerts. When he ventures farther, his wife
and children go with him. His wife Minarii
takes care of all the logistics, especially in
the USA. This is where the competitions
between the best Elvis impersonators
take place. In Las Vegas alone, there are
at least a dozen a month. Some of them
are not serious. Luckily, he has met some
wonderful people, such as Don Rose,
one of the best Elvis impersonators, who
took him under his wing and taught him
a lot. With experience, Rocky learned to
choose his competitions carefully. In the
States, his talent is recognized, such as
through the 2005 World Championships in
Memphis during the famous “Elvis Week,”
that attracts the best impersonators. He
finished thirteenth. At a competition held
at The Mirage in Las Vegas in 2011, he made
it to the foot of the podium in fourth place!
For his international travels, Rocky can rely
on the support of his sponsor, Air Tahiti
Nui. To want to look like Elvis comes at a
price. Rocky owns 13 Elvis costumes that he
bought in Memphis for a small fortune. He
is in concert about four times a week, and
he never gets to spend traditional holidays
with his family. All passion has a price.
The King, and then what?
Some years back, Rocky asked his father if
he thought audiences would eventually tire
of him. Hubert had this beautiful answer:
Can people ever tire of something that will
never go out of style? Since around 2005,
his fans have held him in high esteem:
“I have more than 6000 devoted fans
throughout the world. I perform throughout
all of French Polynesia, Hawaii, New
Zealand, and soon, Australia. To make it to
the top was hard, but to stay there is even
harder.” Fortunately, Rocky is motivated.
First, he regularly trains his voice, much
like an athlete practices a sport. Further,
he doesn’t just sing his favorite Elvis songs
(such as “American Trilogy” and “Suspicious
Mind”), but gives the public what they love
to hear. He also sings in Elvis’ style, for
he states, “Just in case you come across a
bad impersonator, you’re better off just
buying an Elvis CD!” Ultimately, someone
is looking over him. He has felt it for many
years. He likes to think both Elvis and his
father Hubert, who passed away in 2007,
have created a little star in the sky that
shines over Rocky and his family. He has
two daughters, Lisa-Marie (named after
Elvis’ daughter), and Grace (as an homage
to Graceland, Elvis’ home). He states his
vocation is a lifelong commitment! The King
died at the age of 42. Rocky will soon be 40.
He will need to invent the later Elvis, with
less vivid gestures, a rounder physique, but
with a voice so tender and true. He knows
his Elvis inside out. Of course, one day he
will stop. Sadly perhaps, but very fulfilled,
and with his five-year old nephew Andy
already onstage with him, the future is
assured! From the other side of the fare
(house) behind an open window, music rises
up into the heavy air of dusk. It was like a
Baudelaire poem, yet wilder and containing
notes of rhythm and blues. It lasted several
minutes before it lifted off and disappeared
into a gust of wind, much like the breath of
an angel. “You have made my life complete,
and I love you so.”

Elvis en quelques chiffres
Né le 8 janvier 1935 à Tupelo (Mississippi), Elvis
Aaron Presley fut unique, comme ses titres furent
inimitables. Quelques chiffres portent la légende
: il donna 1 156 concerts, dont celui de Hawaii du
14 janvier 1973, premier concert retransmis à la
télévision dans 54 pays simultanément et visionné
par 1,5 milliard de téléspectateurs, un record à ce
jour pour un spectacle musical. Il a vendu près d’1
milliard de disques, obtenu 90 disques d’or, 52 de
platine et 25 de multi-platine.
Elvis in a few numbers
Born January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Aaron
Presley was as unique as his songs were unmatched.
There are numbers to support the legend. He gave
1, 156 concerts, in which one in Hawaii on January
14, 1973 was the first to be televised throughout 54
countries simultaneously and was seen by 1.5 billion
viewers, still a record to this day for a musical concert.
He sold over one billion records, received 90 Golden
records, 52 Platinum records, and 25 Multi-Platinum
records.
Le King, et après ?
Rocky avait demandé à son père, quelques années auparavant, si
le public n’allait pas finir par se lasser. Hubert avait eu cette belle
phrase : « les gens peuvent-ils se lasser de ce qui est indémodable ?
» Depuis 2005 environ, le public l’a porté haut : « J’ai plus de 6 000
fans dans le monde qui me suivent, je chante dans toute la Polynésie,
à Hawaii, en Nouvelle-Zélande, bientôt en Australie. Arriver au top
a été dur, mais y rester est encore plus dur ». Heureusement, Rocky
a des arguments. D’abord, il travaille beaucoup sa voix, comme un
sportif travaille son sport, avec régularité et efforts. Ensuite, il ne
chante pas « son » Elvis, – American Trilogy et Suspicious Mind sont
ses chansons préférées – mais les mélodies que le public adore. Il
chante avec son style, aussi. Car il prévient : « à défaut de tomber
sur un mauvais imitateur, mieux vaut aller s’acheter un CD du King
! » Enfin, « on » veille sur lui, il le ressent depuis des années. Il
aime à penser qu’Elvis et son père Hubert, parti en 2007, forment
cette petite étoile dans le ciel qui brille pour lui et sa famille, dont
ses deux filles Lisa-Marie (prénom de la fille d’Elvis) et Grace (en
hommage à Graceland, la ville d’Elvis). Quand on vous dit que c’est
un engagement à temps complet ! Le King est mort à l’âge de 42 ans.
Rocky en aura bientôt 40. Il lui faudra inventer l’Elvis d’après, aux
gestes moins vifs, au physique plus rond, mais à la voix si tendre,
si vraie. Il le connaît tellement bien, son Elvis. Bien sûr, un jour, il
arrêtera, triste peut-être, mais tellement comblé. Et puis, avec son
neveu de 5 ans, Andy, qui monte déjà sur scène avec lui, la relève
est assurée ! De l’autre côté, derrière la fenêtre du fare ouvert, une
musique s’élève dans l’air alourdi du crépuscule. Comme un poème
de Baudelaire en plus sauvage, des notes de blues en plus rythmées.
Cela a duré quelques minutes, avant de s’envoler et disparaître, dans
un souffle d’alizé. Comme le souffle d’un ange. « You have made my
life complete, and I love you so ».

彼ほど世界中に影響を与えたミュージシャンや歌手は、２０世紀にいったい何人いるだ
ろうか？ビル・ヘイリーやチャック・ベリー、ボー・ディドリーといったロックの先駆
者の中で、いったい誰の歌が今でも口ずさまれているだろう？ロック界の伝説的存在と
して、ビートルズやローリング・ストーンズと肩を並べるのは誰だろう？そして、世
界中で物真似され、何千人ものそっくりさんがいると自慢できるのは、いったい誰だろ
う？答えはもちろん、「ザ・キング」、エルヴィス・プレスリーである。タヒチにもプ
レスリーのそっくりさんが？そう、タヒチにも。タヒチの島々の人が大好きな、プレス
リーのそっくりさんの話。
その朝、温かすぎるくらいの一陣の風
が、海辺に茂るオオハマボウの木々と
甘い香りを漂わせるプルメリアの間を
吹き抜けていった。堂々たる大きなパ
ンの木が２本、庭から道路にはみ出す
ほどに豊かに枝を茂らせて、気持ちの
よい木陰を作っている。ここで、タヒ
チの「ザ・キング」ことロッキー・ゴ
ブレに会った。４０歳手前のがっしり
した体格のロッキーは、手放しで歓迎
してくれた。ちょっとノスタルジック
で人好きのする眼差しで、笑顔は顔い
っぱいに溢れる。エルヴィスの話にな
ると、とたんにロッキーの声は甘くな
り、熱が入る。
ロッキーは、すばらしいストレートを
繰り出す左腕と（ボクシングで４回ポ
リネシア・チャンピオンだった）、テ
ニスをやれば強烈なフォアハンドを繰
り出す右腕を持っているのだが、彼が
選んだのはスポーツではなく、「エル
ヴィス」だった。運命には、道筋がつ
いているようにはっきりと見えるもの
もあるようだ。
父の誇り
まずは、ちょっと気になるロッキーと
いう名前から始めよう。すべては、１
９７０年代に始まった。その頃すでに
ボクシングをしていた父親のユベール
は、有名な米軍爆撃機にちなんで「B52
」というニックネームで呼ばれるほどの
腕前で、当時無敵の偉大なボクサー、
ロッキー・マルシアノの大ファンだっ
た。フランスでロッキー・マルシアノ
に会ったとき、ユベールは男の子が生
まれたらロッキーと名付けることを約
束し、１９７４年９月２０日、この約
束はちゃんと守られた。ロッキーの家
族は全員がボクシングの大ファンで、
生まれて数年間の人間性はボクシング
が作り上げた。しかし、ではエルヴィ
スへの情熱は、いったいどこから来た
のだろう？実は、ロッキーの幼少時代、
父親のユベールだけでなく家族全員が
エルヴィスが大好きで、家でしょっち
ゅう耳にしていたエルヴィスのリズミ
カルな歌や甘くやさしい歌はロッキー
の子守唄代わりだった。その後は、多
少は思いがけないことや偶然があるも
のの、ロッキーもエルヴィスのとりこ
になるのは自然の成り行きだった。
学校に向いていないロッキーは１３歳
で学校をやめ、次の年、ハワイに事
業を持っていた父のおかげでホノルル
に行った。ここでロッキーはカラオケ
に出会い、これをきっかけに、ハワイ
で大人気のエルヴィス・プレスリーの
ファンと友だちになって一緒に歌いに
行くようになった。ロッキーのエルヴ
ィスに対する情熱は、あちこちのカラ
オケで歌う中で自然に始まった。そし
て、時間が過ぎるとともに、ロッキー
は自分がエルヴィスと同じ価値観を持
ち、好きな有名人もカシアス・クレイ
（モハメド・アリ）やブルース・リー
など、共通していることを知った。
１７歳の時にタヒチに戻ったロッキー
は、父親に、ミュージシャンになりた
いと思っていることを打ち明けた。父
はすぐにロッキーの意志を応援し、家
の庭にスタジオまで作ってくれた。そ
れから２年もたたないうちに、ロッキ
ーは自分がエルヴィスのそっくりさん
になると確信するようになった。２０
歳の時、ロッキーは１４００ドルの大
枚をはたいて初めての衣装を買った。
「バーニング・ラブ」の衣装だ。次に
は、カントリークラブで初めてのコン
サートとなったが、未来のファンの前
でロッキーは上がりっぱなしだった。
しかし、タヒチ島のプナアウイアに沈
む夕日の中で聴衆は立ちっぱなしでロ
ッキーの歌に聞き入った。この成功は
その後も続き、それ以来、ロッキーと
家族はコンサートなど芸能活動の収入
で暮らしを支えるようになった。
エルヴィスに捧げる人生
デビューを大成功で飾ったロッキー
は、パペーテ市内のレストランでのス
テージ・ツアーを始め、その範囲はだ
んだん遠くまで広がっていった。ロ
ッキーのステージやツアーは「ザ・キ
ング」の名で行われ、ポリネシアで催
される大きなコンサートには友達のミ
ュージシャンやコーラス・ガールが同
行する。もっと遠くのツアーに出ると
きには奥さんのミナリイが同行してロ
ジスティックをすべて引き受け、アメ
リカなどへのツアーには子どもも連れ
て、家族で旅をする。エルヴィスのそ
っくりさんコンテストの本場はなんと
いってもアメリカで、ラスベガスだけ
で月に１２回以上もあるという。もち
ろん、この中にはいいかげんなコンテ
ストもあるのだが、エルヴィスのそっ
くりさんとしては世界のトップクラス
のドン・ローズのハイレベルのコンテ
ストも、ラスベガスだった。この大会
で、ドンはロッキーを歓迎してエルヴ
ィスの物真似の手ほどきをし、このお
かげでロッキーは格段に上達した。ま
た、ロッキーは経験を重ねながら、慎
重にコンテストを選ばなければならな
いことを学んだ。ロッキーの才能がだ
んだんと認められ、メンフィスに世界
中の最強そっくりさんが集まる有名な
「エルヴィス・ウィーク」で開催され
るエルヴィスのそっくりさんの世界選
手権大会２００５年大会で１３位にな
った。２０１１年にラスベガスのホテ
ル、ル・ミラージュで行われたコンテ
ストでは、惜しくも表彰台を逃したも
のの４位に入賞した。このような海外

遠征では、ロッキーはスポンサーのエ
ア タヒチ ヌイの支援に助けられてい
る。エルヴィスに似るためには、コス
トがかかるのだ。ロッキーは、エルヴ
ィスになるための衣装を１３着揃えて
いるが、いずれもメンフィスで買った
もので、一財産がかかっている。ロッ
キーは週に４回はコンサートのスケジ
ュールが入っていて、クリスマスなど
季節ごとの大事な祝日を家族で過ごす
ことは皆無。情熱には、代償がつきも
のである。
エルヴィスの後は？
数年前、ロッキーは父のユベールに、
そのうちに飽きられてしまうんじゃな
いだろうかとたずねた。ユベールの答
えは、「人は、時代を超えたものに飽
きることはできないだろう？」という
名句だった。たしかに、ロッキーは２
００５年以来の根強い人気に支えられ
ていて、彼いわく、「世界中の６００
０人以上のファンに注目され、ポリネ
シア中で、ハワイやニュージーランド
で、そしてもうすぐオーストラリアで
も歌う。トップに上り詰めるのはハー
ドだったけど、トップの座をキープす
るのはもっとハード」ということだ。
ロッキーには、自分のやり方がある。
まず、スポーツ選手がトレーニングす
るように、定期的に力の入った声の訓
練を欠かさない。次に、ロッキーが歌
うのは自分の好きな曲ではなく（彼の

お気に入りは「アメリカの祈り」と「
サスピシャス・マインド」）、みんな
が大好きな曲だ。自分のスタイルで歌
うロッキーは、「へたな物真似を見る
くらいなら、エルヴィスのCDを買いに
行く方いい」と語る。
ロッキーは、何年も前から「見守られ
ている」ことを強く感じている。２０
０７年に亡くなった父のユベールとエ
ルヴィスがともに夜空の小さな星にな
って、自分と家族のために輝いている
と考えるのが好きだ。ちなみに、ロッ
キーの二人の娘はライザ=マリー（エル
ヴィスの娘の名前）とグレース（エル
ヴィスの生まれた町グレースランドに
ちなんで）で、ここまで徹底すると、
まるでフルタイム契約、トータルなエ
ルヴィス漬けである。
プレスリーは４２歳でこの世を去った。
そして、ロッキーはもうすぐ４０歳に

d’envergure internationale à Tahiti, le
festival Ono’u 2014 réunira pour sa première
édition, du 5 au 11 mai 2014, une cinquantaine
d’artistes graffeurs internationaux, venant de
France métropolitaine et du monde entier
(Allemagne, Australie, Chili, Colombie,
Danemark, États-Unis, Hongrie, Japon,
Pays-Bas, Nouvelle-Zélande etc.) ainsi que
des artistes polynésiens . Parmi ces artistes
internationaux figurent des légendes vivantes
du graffiti. Ceux-ci ont été spécialement invités
à Tahiti pour créer des fresques murales
géantes dans le centre-ville de Papeete et
réaliser des performances artistiques inédites
devant le public. À noter que le nom du festival
Ono’u est inspiré de la fusion des deux mots
tahitiens «Ono» (pour l’action de joindre une
chose à une autre) et « u » (prononcer ou : pour
couleurs) exprimant ainsi l’action de joindre
une couleur à une autre et par extension «
la rencontre des couleurs » à Tahiti à travers
l’art du graffiti. Le président d’honneur
du festival sera l’acteur franco-américain
Christophe Lambert, grand amateur et
collectionneur d’œuvres d’art contemporain
urbain. Le comité d’organisation accueillera
également des personnalités de renom de
l’art contemporain urbain et des partenaires
prestigieux tels que le célèbre magazine
américain Juxtapoz (magazine art & culture
leader aux États-Unis) et la société Artcurial
(première maison française d’expertise et de
vente d’œuvres d’art) représentée par Maître
Arnaud Olivieux, commissaire-priseur et

International graffiti art competition
The 1st annual Ono’u International Festival of Graffiti Art is a huge first for Tahiti and
will take place from May 5-11. This promising event will merge modern and urban art with
the colors and graphic inspirations of our islands.
This first graffiti art event of an
international scope held in Tahiti from
May 5-11 will unite around 50 international
graffiti artists from Metropolitan France
and all over the world (Germany, Australia,
Chile, Columbia, Denmark, USA, Hungary,
Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and
Vietnam), as well as Polynesian artists.
Among these international artists will be the
living legends of graffiti invited specifically
to create giant fresco murals of original art
in downtown Papeete in front of audiences.
For this week of celebration surrounding
graphic street art, 1500m2/4900 sq ft of
surface area painted by day and night will
be installed on the iconic site To’ata, facing
Papeete’s harbor and the island of Moorea.
The name of the Ono’u festival is inspired by
the fusion of two Tahitian words, Ono (the
action of joining two things together) and ‘u
(rhymes with “do”; meaning colors), which
expresses the action of joining one color to
another, and by extension, the meeting of
colors in Tahiti via graffiti art.
The honorary chairman of the festival will
be the French-American actor Christophe
Lambert, a grand connoisseur and collector
of contemporary urban art. The organization
committee will also welcome known
figures in the contemporary art world and
prestigious partners such as the leading
American magazine of art and culture,
Juxtapoz and Artcurial, the premiere French
auction house, represented by Maître
Arnaud Olivieux, auctioneer and expert in
contemporary street art.
From May 5-9, the best artists will create
the first round of fresco murals of original
art downtown Papeete.
Moreover, within the framework of the
festival, there will be an international graffiti
art battle on May 10th and 11th on place
To’ata. Attractive prizes will be awarded to
the first three winners (10,000 USD, 5,000
USD, 2,500 USD) and Air Tahiti Nui will offer
a special prize, Fenua Student, to one of the
French Polynesian artists. Open to everyone
between 18 and 38 years old who practices
graffiti in the capacity of contemporary art,
out of 24 competing finalists, five spots will
go to Polynesian artists in the competition.
Parallel to the competition, numerous
activities and spectacles themed around
graffiti and street culture are on the
program. These include a giant, interactive
mural open to amateur artists and the
public, introductory graffiti workshops for
adolescents, booths selling graffiti objects,
a digital space with graffiti projections,
body painting workshops, DJ shows, and
dance performances fusing hip-hop with
traditional Tahitian dance.
For this week of celebration in May 2014 over
graphic street art, there will be more than
3000m2 /9800 sq ft of surface area painted
day and night in Papeete, turning the island
of Tahiti into an important international
meeting point for contemporary urban art in
the Pacific region. .

Pour cette semaine de célébration autour des arts graphiques
de la rue, ce seront au total plus de 3000m2 de surface qui
seront peints de jour et de nuit à Papeete faisant ainsi de l’île
de Tahiti pendant quelques jours au mois de mai 2014, un
important rendez-vous international pour l’art contemporain
urbain dans la région Pacifique. .

タヒチで初めて開催されるグラフィテ
ィアートの国際イベント、オノウ・フ
ェスティバル2014は、フランス本土を
始め世界各国の国際的なライターと（
ドイツ、オーストラリア、チリ、コロ
ンビア、デンマーク、米国、ハンガリ
ー、日本、オランダ、ニュージーラン
ド、ベトナム、etc）地元ポリネシアの
ライターを加えた約５０人のグラフィ
ティアーティストを集め、２０１４年
５月５日から１１日まで開催される。
参加アーティストの中でもグラフィテ
ィアート界の伝説的ライター数人は、
パペーテ市中心部に作られた特大ウォ
ールに観客の目の前でグラフィティ・
ミューラルを制作するというライブ・
パフォーマンスのために特に招待され
ている。
フェスティバルの名前の「オノウ」
は、タヒチ語の「オノ（Ono、あるもの
を別のものに結びつけること）」と 「
ウ（u、色）」というふたつの言葉を組
み合わせた造語で、つまり、色と色を
組み合わせることから、グラフィティ
アートを通じたタヒチでの「色彩の出
会い」を象徴している。
フェスティバルの名誉実行委員長は、
アメリカ生まれのフランス人俳優ク
リストフ・ランバートで、彼は現代ア
ーバンアートの大ファンかつ熱心な
コレクターだ。現代アーバンアート界
のセレブリティも招聘されていて、有
名なアメリカのアート・カルチャー誌
JUXTAPOZ、美術品鑑定・取引でフラ
ンス最大手フランスのArcturial社を代
表して現代美術のエキスパートで競売
吏のアルノー・オリヴュー氏がフェス
ティバルに参加する。
パペーテの中心部では、５月５日から
９日まで、参加アーティストの中でも
大物ライターたちがライブ・パフォー
マンスの形で、タヒチ初めての長いグ
ラフィティ・ミューラルを制作する。
５月１０日・１１日には、フェスティ
バルの一環としてトアタ広場で国際グ
ラフィティアート・コンテストが開催
される。最高位の３人には米ドルで１
万ドル、５千ドル、２千５００ドルと
いう多額の賞金が用意されており、さ
らに地元ポリネシアのアーティストの
中からエア・タヒチ・ヌイ特別賞のフェ
ヌア・スチューデント賞が贈られる。
国際グラフィティアート・コンテスト
は世界に開かれたコンテストで、現代
アートとしてのグラフィティアートを
実践する者で１８歳から３８歳までで
あれば誰でも参加できる。ただし、地
元ポリネシアのライターは別枠として
５人に限定されている。
コンテストと並行して、グラフィティ
やストリートカルチャーにまつわる数
多くのイベントが予定されている。ア
マチュアのライターや一般にも開かれ
たインタラクティブな特大ミューラル、
子供向けのグラフィティ教室、グラフ
ィティを施したオブジェを展示した
スタンド、グラフィティ・ビデオやデ
ジタルグラフィティ制作の展示スペー
ス、ボディ・ペインティング教室、DJ
パフォーマンス、ヒップホップとポリ
ネシアンダンスをフュージョンさせた
ダンスショーなど、多彩な催しが目白
押しだ。
ストリートアート、グラフィックアー
トを主役にしたこのフェスティバルの
期間中、パペーテでは昼夜を問わず、
トータル3,000m2以上の面積にグラフ
ィティが描かれる予定である。２０１
４年５月の数日間、タヒチの島は太平
洋地域現代アーバンアート関係者のイ
ンターナショナルな出会いの場として
賑わうだろう。

au Musée de Tahiti et des îles
Le 8 mai 1903, Paul Gauguin s’éteignait
à Atuona, aux Marquises, sur l’île d’Hiva
Oa. Ayant passé, depuis 1895, les dernières
années de sa vie en Polynésie, après un
premier séjour de deux ans, le célèbre
peintre français voulait y concrétiser un
idéal artistique exigeant, ouvrant ainsi
la voie à l’art moderne, notamment au
fauvisme et au cubisme. La reconnaissance
de son œuvre n’a pas été immédiate et il
est mort dans la misère. Un autre aspect
de son influence, moins connu, est d’avoir
permis assez rapidement l’éclosion
d’une succession de peintres - installés
à Tahiti ou y séjournant - également
fascinés par les îles, leurs couleurs, leurs
paysages, leurs habitants et le mode de
vie qui s’y déroule. Le Musée de Tahiti
et des Îles conserve une collection «
Beaux-Arts » composée d’environ 200
œuvres. Elle témoigne de la diversité de
représentations que la Polynésie française
a suscité auprès d’artistes, certains nés ou
résidant à Tahiti, dont le plus connu est
le Français Henri Matisse. L’exposition
« Après Gauguin » rassemble donc 80
œuvres issues de la collection du musée
ainsi que des toiles venant de divers
fonds - publics et privés - qui permettent
de reconstituer l’histoire d’une aventure
esthétique originale qui s’est déroulée sur
une soixantaine d’années.

A large exhibition organized at the Musée de Tahiti et des Îles - Te fare Manaha takes into
account the body of original artwork that took place in French Polynesia after the death
of artist Paul Gauguin in 1903 until the 1960s.
On May 8, 1903, Paul Gauguin passed away
in Atuona, Marquesas, on the island of
Hiva Oa. Having spent the last years of his
life since 1895 in French Polynesia after an
initial two-year stay, the famous French
painter wanted to establish an artistic
standard in Polynesia that would open the
door to modern art with an emphasis on
Fauvism and Cubism. However, recognition
of his work did not occur during his lifetime
and he died in poverty. Another lesserknown aspect of his influence is that it
quickly paved the way for the emergence
of a succession of painters, who either
lived or stayed in Tahiti, and who were just
as fascinated by the islands, their colors,
their landscapes, their inhabitants, and
the lifestyle. Le Musée de Tahiti et des
Îles has a fine arts collection that includes
about 200 works. It illustrates the variety of
interpretations that French Polynesia has
aroused in artists, whether born or residing
in Tahiti. The most famous is the French
painter, Henri Matisse. The Après Gauguin
(After Gauguin) Exhibition presents 80
works from the museum’s collection, as
well as paintings from various public and
private collections, that permit an historical
reconstruction of a unique aesthetic journey
that took place over sixty years. The works
of about forty painters with their different
styles are accompanied by an exhibit\
plaque. These accompanying texts situate
each work within its cultural and social
contexts before the installation of the
Center for Nuclear Experimentation in the
Pacific (CEP) in the 1960s, which brought
significant social changes. Theano Jaillet,
director of the museum, states that,
“through this selection of works, we wanted
to show the richness and complexity that
French Polynesia evoked in artists who
believed that a work of art is not just a
documentation of history from “la belle
époque,” but a gateway to unlimited
impressions of the world.”

French Polynesia. Traditional Polynesian art
is primarily expressed through tattooing and
sculpture in a very stylized way. Riccardo
Pineri, co-curator of the exhibit along with
Theano Jaillet, states, “Pictorial art in French
Polynesia did not exist before Gauguin.
What we wanted to express through this
exhibit, is the emergence of another look
at the world that started in Tahiti. To put
oneself in front of an object, to look at it
and reproduce it, to try and find the mystery
of the being that is in every face…paintings
suggest a kind of sharing that view, a close
attention to the world, to people…which is
inconceivable with traditional art.”
The exhibit is organized into three parts:
until the 1920s, from 1930-1940, and from
1950-1960. Although the majority of the
works are in a figurative style, some of them
express the attraction of certain painters to
modern forms of pictorial expression, such
as cubism or abstraction. However, also
evident are the initial figure paintings over
Polynesian legends that continue to this
day. In addition, visitors will see how some
artists attempted to «seize the mystery of
Polynesian light.» In particular, Riccardo
Pineri expresses that, «the advantage of
these artists, is that they did not copy
Gauguin.»

> Les œuvres d’environ quarante peintres, avec leurs différents
styles, y sont présentées en compagnie de tableaux
explicatifs, permettant de les resituer dans leur contexte
social et culturel, avant les changements importants de
société qu’apportera l’installation, dans les années 1960, du
Centre d’expérimentation nucléaire du Pacifique (CEP).
« Nous avons voulu témoigner, par ce choix d’œuvres, d’une
image riche et complexe que la Polynésie a suscité chez les
artistes, persuadés que l’œuvre d’art n’est pas uniquement un
‘’document d’époque’’, fût-il de la ‘’belle époque’’, mais une
ouverture au sens inépuisable du monde », explique ainsi
Theano Jaillet, directrice du musée. L’exposition «Après
Gauguin» est l’occasion de montrer que cette période a
permis que se développe une activité artistique nouvelle en
Polynésie. L’art plastique traditionnel polynésien s’exprime en
effet surtout au travers de la sculpture et du tatouage, de façon
habituellement très stylisée. « Il n’y avait pas d’art pictural
en Polynésie française avant Gauguin », explique Riccardo
Pineri, co-commissaire avec Theano Jaillet, de l’exposition.
«Ce que nous avons voulu montrer à travers cette exposition,
c’est la naissance à Tahiti, d’un autre regard sur le monde.
Se mettre devant un objet, le regarder, reproduire… essayer

de retrouver le mystère de l’être qui est dans chaque visage…
La peinture implique une sorte de partage de regard. Une
attention au monde, une attention aux hommes… inconcevable
dans l’art traditionnel». L’exposition est organisée en trois
parties : jusqu’au années 1920, les années 1930-1940 et les
années 1950-1960. Si la majorité des œuvres sont de style
figuratif, certaines d’entre elles manifestent l’intérêt de
certains peintres pour des formes modernes d’expression
picturale comme le cubisme, voire l’abstraction. Mais on
y trouve aussi les prémices d’une peinture d’illustration
des légendes polynésiennes aujourd’hui développée. On y
découvrira également comment certains artistes ont tenté
de «saisir le mystère de la lumière polynésienne», ainsi que
l’exprime Riccardo Pineri pour qui, notamment, «l’intérêt de
ces peintres, c’est de ne pas avoir fait du Gauguin».

タヒチ博物館（タヒチ語でテ・ファレ・マナハ）では、大規模な美術展「アプレ・ゴーギ
ャン展」を開催。この展覧会では、ゴーギャンが亡くなった１９０３年以降、１９６０年
代までの時期にフレンチポリネシアで展開されたオリジナリティ豊かな芸術活動の軌跡を
紹介している。
フランスの画家ポール・ゴーギャンは、
マルケサス諸島にあるヒバオア島のア
トゥオナで１９０３年５月８日に亡く
なった。初めてポリネシアに渡って２
年間滞在した後、１８９５年以降の晩
年を再びポリネシアで過ごしたゴーギ
ャンは、高い芸術的理想をポリネシア
の地で実現しようと試み、フォーヴィ
スムやキュビスムといった近代美術へ
の道を開いた。しかし、ゴーギャンの
作品は当時すぐには評価されず、彼は
貧窮の中で死んだ。ゴーギャンの死後、
彼に続いてタヒチに滞在したり住み着
く画家たちが間をおかずに多く現れた
ことは、ゴーギャンが芸術界に与えた
影響のうちあまり知られていない側面
である。このようにしてポリネシアに
暮らした画家たちは、ゴーギャンと同

様、ポリネシアの島々とその豊かな色
彩や風景、また島の人々と彼らの生き
方に魅せられた。
タヒチ博物館では、約２００点に及ぶ
美術品コレクションを所蔵しており、
その作品群には、フレンチポリネシア
が芸術家たちに与えたインスピレーシ
ョンによって生み出された多彩な表現
を見ることができる。タヒチ出身やタ
ヒチに住んだ画家たちの中で最も知ら
れているのが、フランスの巨匠アンリ・
マティスである。
アプレ・ゴーギャン展では、タヒチ博
物館の所蔵作品と公私団体のコレクシ
ョンから絵画約８０点を集め、６０年
間に渡るユニークな芸術美探求の軌跡
を再構築している。約４０人の画家によ
る様々なスタイルの作品が展示され、
作品に添えられた解説パネルには作品の
作成当時、つまり太平洋核実験センタ
ー（CEP）が１９６０年代に設立された
ために社会に大きな変革がもたらされ
る以前のポリネシアの社会的・文化的
背景が理解できるように配慮されてい
る。タヒチ博物館のテアノ・ジャイエ
館長は、「芸術作品というものは、単
なる「時代の記録」ではなく（たとえ
それが「良き時代」だったとしても）
、この世界の限りない感覚・感性を理解
する手がかりであるという確信に基づ
き、ポリネシアが芸術家たちに呼び起
こした豊かで複雑なイメージを今回選
んだ展示作品によって示したかった」
と展覧会の意図を説明している。
アプレ・ゴーギャン展を理
解する
アプレ・ゴーギャン展は、ゴーギャン
の死後６０年間という時期が、ポリ
ネシアにおける新たな芸術活動の発展
をもたらしのだということを明示する
機会となっている。ポリネシアでは、
伝統的な造形美術は一般に図案化さ
れた様式をとり、主に彫刻とタトゥー
として多く表現されてきた。この点に
ついて、「ゴーギャン以前には、フレ
ンチポリネシアには絵画芸術はなかっ
た」と、テアノ・ジャイエ館長と共に
アプレ・ゴーギャン展を企画したリカ
ルド・ピネリ氏は説明している。「こ
の展覧会を通じて示したかったのは、
この時期に、世界を見つめる新たな視
点がタヒチに誕生したこと。ひとつの
オブジェを前に、それを見つめ、それ
を再現する…それぞれの顔にある存在
の神秘を見出そうと試みる…。絵画と
はある意味で視点を共有することであ
り、世界に対する関心、人々に対する
関心といった絵画の視点は、それまで
のポリネシア伝統芸術の世界では考え
られないものだった」という。
アプレ・ゴーギャン展は、ゴーギャン
の死後１９２０年まで、１９３０年
から４０年、そして１９５０年から６
０年という３つの時期で構成されてい
る。展示作品の大半は具象絵画だが、
中にはキュビズムや抽象芸術といった
近代絵画の表現様式に対する画家の関
心が表れているものも数点見受けられ
る。また、今日多く見られるポリネシ
アの伝説を表現した絵画についても、
その芽生えを見出すことができる。
さらには、幾人かの画家たちがリカル
ド・ピネリ氏の言う「ポリネシアの光
の神秘をとらえる」ことをいかに試み
たかも見て取れ、ピネリ氏は「彼らは
ゴーギャンの真似をしなかった。この
ことは非常に意義がある」と評価して
いる。

Les Tahitiens dans la
Seconde Guerre mondiale
Le 6 juin 2014, le monde commémorera le 70e anniversaire du
débarquement des Forces Alliées en France. Soixante dix ans
après le fameux Jour J, le 6 juin 1944, opération militaire qui
marqua le réel début de la libération de l’Europe, des cérémonies
d’envergures sont prévues sur les plages normandes. Un temps
de mémoire qui est l’occasion de rappeler que ces événements
tragiques ont aussi concerné Tahiti et ses îles, si loin fussentelles des principales grandes zones de combat. Avant de devenir
la Polynésie française, les archipels qui étaient alors appelés les
Établissements Français d’Océanie (E.F.O.) furent précipités dans
la tourmente comme la France métropolitaine dont ces territoires
dépendaient. Au cours du second conflit mondial, environ 600
Tahitiens participèrent aux opérations de guerre principalement
en Europe, et dans à peu près tous les corps d’armées, au cours
d’opérations terrestres, maritimes et aériennes. Beaucoup n’en
revinrent pas et la mémoire de ces événements s’est amenuisée
au fil des années et des générations. La sortie de deux ouvrages,
et la tenue à Paris et à Tahiti d’une exposition, vont permettre de
mettre en lumière le destin de ces soldats tahitiens, la plupart
volontaires. À paraître le 17 avril 2014, la première publication,
L’Officier des îles, a été écrite par François Broche, historien
spécialiste de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de la résistance
française, auteur d’un ouvrage à la grande notoriété, Le Bataillon
des guitaristes. François Broche narre le destin de son père,
l’officier de l’armée française Félix Broche, qui a emmené le
corps expéditionnaire tahitien jusqu’au cœur du désert libyen,
à Bir Hakeim, en cette année charnière du conflit que fut 1942.
Là, bien loin des îles polynésiennes qu’il affectionnait tant,
il fut tué par un éclat d’obus au cours de l’un des combats de
cette bataille capitale, fin mai-début juin. Bir Hakeim permit
aux Forces Alliées de marquer un coup d’arrêt à la dangereuse

avancée allemande et italienne en Afrique du Nord. Au cours
des combats et au sein des forces de la France Libre, environ 150
soldats tahitiens s’illustrèrent par leur courage et leur ténacité,
faisant face notamment aux troupes de l’Afrikacorps menées
par le célèbre «Renard du Désert», le maréchal allemand Erwin
Rommel. L’ouvrage raconte également la passion qu’a partagée
l’officier français avec Tahiti et Suzanne Martin, dite Tutana, qui
s’est éteinte à l’âge de 100 ans en septembre 2012 à Huahine.
À paraître fin mai, une seconde publication est également
appelée à faire date. On la doit au travail et à l’opiniâtreté de
l’auteur tahitien Jean-Christophe Shigetomi, à la tête d’une
association consacrée à rappeler le rôle des Tahitiens pendant
les différents conflits du 20e siècle. Tamarii Volontaires, les>
Tahitiens dans la seconde guerre mondiale ambitionne d’être
une référence concernant cette période historique.

Tahitians in
World War II
On June 6, 2014, the world will commemorate
the 70th anniversary of the landing of
the Allied Forces in France. Seventy years
after the famous D-Day on June 6th 1944,
a military operation that marked the true
beginning of the liberation of Europe, largescale ceremonies have been planned for the
beaches of Normandy. This commemoration
should be reminder that these tragic events
also affected Tahiti and her islands, despite
their long distance from the principal combat
zones. Before becoming French Polynesia,
the archipelagoes, which were then called
the French Establishments in Oceania
(Établissements Français d’Océanie or
E.F.O.), were also thrown into turmoil since
they were dependent upon Metropolitan
France. During the second world war,
about 600 Tahitians took part in the war
effort, mainly in Europe and throughout
all branches of the armed forces, whether
on the ground, at sea, or in the air. Many
never returned, and the memory of these
events has faded over the years and across
generations. The publication of two books
and the presence of exhibitions in Tahiti
and Paris will shed some light on the fate of
these Tahitian soldiers, most of whom were
volunteers. The first publication, L’Officier
des îles (Officer from the Islands), will be
released on April 17, 2014, and is written by
François Broche, an expert historian over
the World War II and the French Resistance.
Brioche (also the author of the acclaimed
Le Bataillon des guitaristes) narrates the
fate of his father, Félix Brioche, an officer
in the French Army who, in 1942, led the
Tahitian expeditionary forces into the heart
of the Libyan desert to Bir Hakeim during
this pivotal year of conflict. There, far from
the Polynesian islands he loved so much,
Brioche was killed by shrapnel in late Mayearly June during this principal battle. Bir
Hakeim allowed the Allied Forces to push
back the dangerous German and Italian
advancement into North Africa. During
battles and in the armed forces for Free
France, about 150 Tahitian soldiers were
distinguished by their courage and tenacity,
notably for facing Afrikacorps troops led
by German Marshall Erwin Rommel, the
famous “Fox of the Desert.” The book also
tells of the passion that the French officer
shared for Tahiti and Suzanne Martin, aka
Tutana, who passed away on Huahine at
the age of 100 in September 2012. A second

dedicated to remembering the role of
Tahitians during various conflicts of the 20th
century. Tamarii Volontaires, les Tahitiens
dans la seconde guerre mondiale (Young
volunteers: Tahitians in the Second World
War) promises to be an excellent reference
concerning this historical period. After
considerable painstaking work collecting
information in Tahiti and throughout the
world, Shigetomi retraces the fates of
Tahitian soldiers and their participation
in various operations during WWII. This
military adventure took them from air raids
over Germany to Bir Hakeim, to battles in the
Italian countryside, to landing on the coast
of Provence in August 1944, and into the last
battles of the war. Extremely detailed with
previously unreleased material and moving
accounts, the author did not only commit
to writing about the battles, but also about
the journeys of these soldiers who arrived
from the islands. Interestingly, the author
also examines the conditions the survivors
faced in May 1946 when they returned home.
He highlights the profound changes that
the arrival of these Polynesians who fought
alongside the allies would bring to Tahitian
society. This abundantly illustrated book of
about 300 pages is rich in imagery, contains
the results of conscientious research, and
is complete with drawings by Jean-Louis
Saquet. It allows us to take a dive into this
war era to retrace the steps of these heroes.

iconographie, fruit d’un patient travail de
collecte et complétée par des illustrations
de Jean-Louis Saquet. Il nous permet de
replonger dans cette époque de guerre, sur
les pas de ces héros.

la Seconde Guerre mondiale»
La sortie, en août 2014, du livre de Jean-Christophe Shigetomi,
Tamarii Volontaires, les Tahitiens dans la seconde guerre
mondiale, s’accompagnera de deux grandes expositions. Une
trentaine de panneaux seront exposés. Ceux-ci seront illustrés
d’extraits du livre suivant sa thématique chronologique. Ils
seront constitués de courts textes, de photographies quasi
inédites trouvées dans les fonds familiaux et d’illustrations
réalisées par Jean-Louis Saquet lorsque la photo n’existe pas.

Tahiti Pearl Regatta
Cette régate met en compétition des
voiliers de différentes catégories sur des
parcours nautiques situés au cœur de
l’archipel des Iles sous-Le-Vent (îles de Taha’a, Raiatea et Bora Bora). La compétition est
ouverte à un large panel de voiliers, sans limitation de taille et de type (monocoques,
catamarans, trimarans, voiliers privés, loués, en escale trans-pacifique, pirogues
à voile, super yachts, radeaux, etc… ). Elle accueille plusieurs dizaines d’équipages
en provenance de Polynésie française mais aussi de l’étranger. La renommée de la
Tahiti Pearl Reggatta tient aussi à son aspect festif et décontracté. Entre les régates,
les escales sont rythmées par des animations variées et une ambiance typiquement

This regatta puts many categories of sailboats into competition over nautical courses
located in the heart of the Leeward Islands (Taha’a, Raiatea, and Bora Bora). The competition is open to a large array of sailboats without size or type restrictions (mono-hulled,
catamarans, trimarans, private or rented yachts, trans-Pacific stopover yachts, sailing
canoes, luxury super yachts, rafts, etc.). The race welcomes several dozen teams from all
over French Polynesia, but also from abroad. Tahiti Pearl Regatta is renowned for its festive
and relaxed approach. Between regattas, stopovers are animated with all kinds of entertainment in a typically French Polynesian ambience.

Festivités des Pléiades Matari’i i raro
Les anciennes cérémonies liées aux changements de saison – le lever et le coucher
de la constellation des Pleïades, Matāri’i i raro de mai à octobre et Matāri’i i ni’a de
novembre à avril – revivent à Tahiti depuis plusieurs années. Le mois de mai signe le
début de l’hiver austral, l’entrée dans le temps des restrictions où la terre donne peu.
L’association culturelle Haururu organise à cette occasion différentes réjouissances à
l’Embouchure de la Papenoo ainsi que dans la vallée de la Maroto.
Taapuna Master
La Taapuna Master est une des compétitions
majeures de la saison réservée à l’élite du surf,
du bodyboard et du paddle. Tous viennent se
mesurer sur la tubulaire et photogénique vague
de récif de Taapuna. Les compétiteurs apprécient
particulièrement cette compétition pour son cadre
idyllique et son ambiance exceptionnelle. Le
public pourra profiter du spectacle, au plus près de
l’action, grâce aux navettes qui circulent les jours
de compétition.
Ancient ceremonies related to the changing of the seasons – the rising and setting of the
Pleiades constellation, Matāri’i i raro from May to October and Matāri’i i ni’a from November
to April – has undergone a revival in Tahiti for several years now. May starts the austral
winter, an entrance into the time of restrictions when the earth bears little food. The cultural
association, Haururu, organizes several festivities during this time at the opening to the
Papenoo River, as well as in Maroto Valley.
The Taapuna Master is one of the major competitions
of the season reserved for elite athletes of surfing,
bodyboard, and stand up paddle. They all come to measure up against the tube and the photogenic waves of
Taapuna reef. Contestants especially appreciate this
competition due to its idyllic setting and exceptional
ambience. Spectators can enjoy the show close up
thanks to boat trips that will circulate during
competition days.

The traditional dance schools will open the festivities of the Heiva—the huge Tahitian cultural
festival—through presenting their annual show. About a dozen schools will perform on stage in the

scheduled day at the market in Papeete, the Office of
Tourism, Bougainville Park, on the waterfront by the
yachts, or in the evenings at Vai’ete plaza.
The election of Miss Tahiti is the high point of celebrating the beauty and richness of
French Polynesia. More than a beauty contest, it is a modern and elegant celebration of
Polynesian cultural heritage to the rhythm of the drums. Who, among all the contestants
from the different archipelagoes, will succeed Mehetia Riaria, who was also Miss France’s
First Runner-up for 2013?

« Big Apple »
Il est impossible de visiter New York
au pas de course ! Il ne faut donc pas
hésiter pas à réserver cinq journées,
au moins, pour un séjour réussi ! D’un
point de vue géographique, le cœur
de cette mégapole - Manhattan - est,
en fait, une île. Celle-ci est entourée
par l’Hudson River à l’ouest, l’East
River à l’est, l’Upper New York Bay au
sud et l’Harlem River au nord. Mais
Manhattan est également l’un des
cinq arrondissements de la ville de
New York. Les autres sont le Bronx,
Brooklyn, Queens et Staten Island.
Manhattan est, sans doute, la partie
la plus attrayante de Big Apple. C’est
le cœur économique et financier avec
notamment le célèbre quartier de
Wall Street, c’en est aussi le centre
culturel avec ses riches musées et ses
gratte-ciel les plus célèbres. Pendant
la visite de New York, vous aurez
presque constamment la tête levée
vers le ciel afin de mieux scruter les
détails des buildings. Si le métro
vous permet de vous déplacer très
rapidement, il n’offre aucun paysage.
En bus et en taxi, le visiteur a le nez
collé à la vitre, et tente vainement
d’apercevoir quelques curiosités...
Choisissez donc la visite en bus rouge
à deux étages. La partie supérieure
est à l’air libre et vous permet de ne
rien rater des gratte-ciel et de la vie
de la rue. Ces Bus à impériale partent
toutes les vingt minutes et cinquante
arrêts vous permettent de descendre,
visiter et reprendre un autre bus
à votre convenance. Ainsi vous
sillonnez Upper Manhattan, Midtown,
Downtown et Upper Manhattan. Et
plus… Grâce à des forfaits abordables,
la visite de la Grosse Pomme est un
véritable plaisir.
Exploring the Big Apple
New York is a magical name that draws visitors to the first European town of the new
continent. In 2011, The Big Apple attracted more than 50 million tourists, which shows
the appeal of this American east coast megalopolis. The urban area of Greater New
York has more than 20 million inhabitants and New York City has 8 million. With such
magnitude, having a proper guide is of the essence.
It is impossible to visit New York in a
hurry. It is a good idea to plan at least
five days for a fulfilling visit. From a
geographical standpoint, Manhattan is an
island, surrounded by the Hudson River to
the west, the East River to the east, Upper
New York Bay to the south, and the Harlem
River to the north. Manhattan is also one
of the five boroughs of New York City. The
others are the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens
and Staten Island. Manhattan is without
a doubt the Big Apple’s most appealing
area. It is the economic and financial center
with its famous Wall Street and the center
for culture with its diverse museums and
famous skyscrapers. While visiting New
York, your will probably tilt your head up at
the sky most of the time to try to see the
ornate details of the buildings. Although
the subway is a means to quickly get from
place to place, there are no views. With a
bus or taxi, passengers have their noses
glued to the windows, trying in vain to
take in the sights. A good alternative is the
double-decker Red Bus. The open-air upper
deck allows you to take in all the skyscrapers
and life on the streets. The Red Buses
depart every 20 minutes and fifty stops
give you the opportunity to get off to visit
the sights then hop on another bus at your
convenience. This way you will get to see
Upper Manhattan, Midtown, Downtown,
and more. Thanks to affordable prices,
visiting the Big Apple is a real pleasure.
Downtown: Battery
Park and Ground Zero

At the extreme south of Manhattan is the
historic center. Wall Street dates back to
a wall that early Dutch settlers built in the
16th century to protect themselves from
neighboring Indians. Today this street leads
to the Stock Exchange, the world temple
of finance. The Hudson River and the East
River meet at the southern tip of the island
where the Battery Park district is located.
Today the Sphere that decorated the Plaza
of the World Trade Center has found a
home. It rests there imposingly, damaged
by the fall of the towers. Battery Park is also
the departure point for ferries headed to the
Statue of Liberty, Staten Island, and Ellis
Island. The return ride provides magnificent
views over New York’s financial district and
the skyscrapers.

Voici l’extrême sud de Manhattan, le cœur historique avec Wall
Street dont l’origine remonte au mur construit par les premiers
colons hollandais au 16e siècle pour se protéger des Indiens
voisins. Aujourd’hui, cette rue débouche sur le Stock Exchange,
le temple mondial de la finance. L’Hudson River et l’East River
se rejoignent à la pointe sud de l’île où se situe le quartier de
Battery Park. La Sphère qui décorait la Plaza du World Trade
Center y a retrouvé une place où elle trône, bien qu’abîmée
par la chute des tours. Battery Park est aussi le point de départ
des ferries qui desservent la statue de la Liberté, Staten Island
et Ellis Island. Pour cette dernière, le retour vous offre une
vue magnifique sur le quartier financier de New York et ses
gratte-ciel. La statue de la Liberté, née du génie des Français
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi et Gustave Eiffel est l’objet d’une
visite incontournable comme Ellis Island, île où les candidats
à l’immigration subissaient les contrôles de moralité et de
santé. Remontez vers le nord par Church Street, vous arrivez à
Ground Zéro. Les tours jumelles détruites par des attentats en
septembre 2001 sont remplacées par la One World Trade Center,
surnommée Freedom Tower. Cette nouvelle tour dépasse de
huit mètres l’Empire State building avec 381 mètres de hauteur.
Avec sa flèche, elle mesure 541 mètres soit 1776 pieds, chiffre de
l’année de l’indépendance des États-Unis. Freedom Tower fait
partie d’un complexe en construction de plusieurs tours avec
Two, Three et Four World Trade Center.
Si la marche ne vous fait pas peur, (mais portez de bonnes
chaussures…) engagez-vous dans Park Row et rejoignez
Chinatown qui ne cesse de s’étendre, riche de plus de deux
cents restaurants. Votre promenade dans le quartier chinois
vous conduit vers le nord à Little Italy. Faites une pause dans un
des cafés ou l’un de ces restaurants pour déguster plats italiens,
pizzas et glaces onctueuses. Le Bus rouge que vous avez repris
vous promène dans Greenwich Village. Ce quartier a connu
le courant hippie, Bob Dylan y a vécu comme de nombreux
artistes. Aujourd’hui, Greenwich Village et ses boutiques
excentriques recueillent les faveurs de la jeunesse. La nuit,
la zone connaît une animation particulière dans les bars et
les boîtes de nuit. Vous vous dirigez ensuite vers Tribeca où
Robert de Niro a ouvert le Tribeca Film Center. Celui-ci est
surnommé aujourd’hui « Hollywood East ». Soho tout proche
est l’un des quartiers à la mode, où des artistes de toutes
sortes ont emménagé dans des lofts. Vous remontez toujours
vers le nord. Descendez à Union Square et dirigez-vous vers
Gramercy Park, le quartier le plus européen de la ville. Dans le
parc privé du même nom, les statues de George Washington,
d’Abraham Lincoln, du Mahatma Gandhi et du marquis de
Lafayette cohabitent dans la célébrité. Ne manquez surtout
pas le Flatiron, un immeuble qui est le symbole du début de la
construction des gratte-ciel.

The Statue of Liberty, designed by

where immigrants endured grueling health
and morality inspections. Then if you
head north via Church Street, it will take
you to Ground Zero. The twin towers that
were destroyed by the terrorist attacks in
September 2001 have been replaced by
the One World Trade Center, nicknamed
Freedom Tower. This new tower is 8 meters
(26 ft) higher than the Empire State
building, with a height of 381 meters (1250
ft). With the spire in place, the building is
541 meters high (1776 ft) to reference the
year of the United States Declaration of
Independence. Freedom Tower is the first
of a complex of towers under construction
that will feature towers Two, Three and
Four World Trade Center.
Chinatown, Little Italy,
Tribeca, Soho and
Greenwich Village
If walking is your thing (but wear the
right shoes), take Park Row to the everexpanding Chinatown, which has more
than 200 restaurants. Your stroll through
the Chinese district will take you north to
Little Italy. Take a break in one of the cafés
or in one of the restaurants to sample
sumptuous Italian food, pizzas, and ice
scream. Hop on another Red Bus to tour
Greenwich Village. This part of town
witnessed the hippy era, and Bob Dylan
once lived there, as well as many artists.
Today, Greenwich Village with its quirky
boutiques attracts the younger crowds.
At night, it is known for its lively bars and
nightclubs. Your Red Bus then takes you to
Tribeca where Robert de Niro opened the
Tribeca Film center. Today, it is nicknamed
Hollywood East. Soho, which is close by, is a
very fashionable district where all kinds of
artists have moved into lofts.
Keep going north. Get off at Union Square
and head towards Gramercy Park, the most
European district in the city. There is a
private park that carries the same name
where statues of George Washington,
Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi and
the Marquis de Lafayette famously reside.
You must not miss the Flatiron Building,
which symbolizes the beginning of the
construction of skyscrapers. It was built
in 1903 in a striking triangular shape. The
Flatiron Building is shaped like a cast-iron
clothing iron, and its metal structure was
a revolutionary construction technique for
its time. You are now walking on Broadway,
always going north, and at the corner of
West 34th Street, you have the choice
between the Empire State Building on the
right and Macy’s on the left. The Empire
State Building still remains the highest
viewing point in New York. Don’t let the
long lines turn you away from going up.
The ascent is well-organized with a short
waiting time. The elevator takes you (in
two phases) to the observation deck on
the 86th floor. The view during the day
is superb, yet stunning at night with
the thousands of lights of the New York
cityscape. Photographers huddle together
one after another at different points on the
deck to capture their best shots.

temps d’attente est court. L’ascenseur vous conduit (en deux
temps) à l’observatoire du 86e étage. La vue est superbe de
jour, surprenante de nuit avec les milliers de lumières de
l’agglomération new-yorkaise. Les photographes se pressent
et se succèdent aux différents points de la terrasse pour saisir
le meilleur cliché.
Times Square, Rockefeller Center
Time Square au coin de Broadway et de la 42nd Street, a été
immortalisé par les photos de la victoire des États-Unis sur
le Japon, pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, et par les
célébrations du Nouvel An où des millions de personnes se
rassemblent. Mais Time Square, c’est avant tout le quartier
des théâtres, où les pièces et les comédies musicales débutent

leur carrière. La nuit, Time Square prend une autre dimension
avec les enseignes au néon et les publicités lumineuses. Le
Rockfeller Center est situé à huit rues plus au nord. Nous
avons tous en mémoire les images diffusées par la télévision
dès que l’hiver arrive sur New York, quand les patineurs
envahissent la petite patinoire au pied du Rockfeller Building.
En d’autres saisons, le lieu est laissé aux tables des terrasses
de la brasserie du centre.
Upper Manhattan
Vous êtes maintenant à deux pas de la 5th Avenue, artère
légendaire où les enseignes les plus prestigieuses ont pignon
sur rue. La partie la plus intéressante part de l’Empire State
Building jusqu’à Grand Army Plaza, au coin de la 59th
Street, une promenade de moins de deux kilomètres. La
cathédrale Saint-Patrick, bâtiment gothique, est nichée entre
des buildings récents pour vous rappeler que cette ville est
tournée depuis longtemps vers le modernisme. Entrez par
les magnifiques portes en bronze et, à l’intérieur, admirez le
baldaquin, la rosace et la Lady Chapel. Grand Army Plaza est
le point de départ des calèches pour une balade dans Central
Park. Central Park South longe le parc. The Pierre, The Plaza,
Hemsley Park Lane et le Ritz Carlton sont des hôtels qui

Times Square,
Rockefeller Center
Times Square, starting at the corner of
Broadway and West 42nd Street became
famous with World War II victory photos
when the United States announced the end
of the war on Japan and the New Year’s Eve
celebration in which over a million people
gather to see the ball drop. However, Times
Square is above all the theatre district,
where plays and musical comedies start
their runs. At night, Times Square takes on
another dimension with its neon signs and
brightly lit advertisements. The Rockefeller
Center is located eight streets farther north.
We can all remember the images broadcast
on television as soon as winter arrived in
New York, with ice skaters filling the ice
rink at the foot of the Rockefeller building.
During the other seasons, the area is filled
with patio tables from Plaza restaurants.
Upper Manhattan
Now you are two steps away from 5th
Avenue, the legendary artery of prestigious
shops. The most interesting part starts
at the Empire State Building to the Grand
Army Plaza on the corner of 59th Street,
which is a stroll of about 2 km (a mile). The
gothic Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is nestled
between newer buildings as a reminder
that for a long time, this city has leaned
towards modernism. Enter the magnificent
bronze doors, and inside you can admire the
baldachin, the Rose Window, and the Lady
Chapel. Grand Army Plaza is the departure
point for a horse-drawn carriage ride
through Central Park. The Pierre, The Plaza,
Hemsley Park Lane and the Ritz Carlton are
hotels along Central Park South that offer
unobstructed views over the 36 acres of
Central Park, hence their high room rates.
Red buses await on this avenue to take you
to explore the west end while passing in
front of Columbus Circle. The itinerary then
takes 72nd Street to once again follow the
park. You’ll pass in front of the Dakota, the
first luxury apartment building built on the

Upper West Side. It became famous with the
film, Rosemary’s Baby. Judy Garland, Lauren
Bacall, Leonard Bernstein and Boris Karloff
all owned one of the 65 apartments that are
in one of the most beautiful addresses in
New York. Still farther north is Harlem. The
bus tours this famous, beautifully renovated
neighborhood. You’ll then turn towards the
south taking Madison Avenue with its chic
stores. Your two-day trip on the Red Buses
allowed you to see New York like it needs to
be discovered. But it is not over yet. Try to
visit Brooklyn. Cross the East River Bridge,
and perhaps like many New Yorkers, you’ll
come back on foot on a Saturday or Sunday.
Brooklyn Bridge is 1.8 km long (a little over
a mile) and offers a beautiful view over the
Civic Center skyscrapers. On the way back,
the Red Bus stops at South Street Seaport.
As an historic, renovated harbor, old riggings
still remain on the quay. Many boutiques, a
museum, and distinctive houses are part of
this stop.

Mais ce n’est pas terminé, tentez la
visite de Brooklyn, traversez l’East
River sur le pont du même nom,
vous y reviendrez peut-être comme
piéton un samedi ou un dimanche
comme beaucoup de New-Yorkais.
Le Brooklyn Bridge est long de 1,8
km et offre une très jolie vue sur
les gratte-ciel du Civic Center. Au
retour, le Bus rouge s’arrête à South
Street Seaport. Ancien centre
portuaire, le quartier a été rénové,
de vieux gréements sont encore à
quai. De nombreuses boutiques,
un musée et des maisons typiques
font partie de cette halte.

Transportation
All taxis are yellow. All you have to do is hail
taxis from the street. There are many of them,
and they are quick and affordable. It is the main
means of transport for New Yorkers. The subway
is very practical to go back and forth across
Manhattan. The Metrocard offers good deals.
Buses travel on a north-south axis with free
schedules available inside the buses. You can pay
with either a Metrocard or change. For Red Bus

nombreux, rapides et abordables. C’est le moyen de transport des New-Yorkais.
Le Métro est très pratique et son réseau sillonne Manhattan. La Metrocard offre
des tarifs intéressants. Les bus circulent sur l’axe nord-sud. Des plans du réseau
sont disponibles gratuitement à l’intérieur du véhicule. La Metrocard ou la

Pourquoi Big Apple ?
Au 19e siècle, à New York, les maisons closes sont nombreuses et la pomme est le
nom discret des belles et fraîches courtisanes. Une aristocrate française, Evelyne
Claudine de Saint-Evremond, y ouvre un des premiers salons pour jeunes gens
de bonne famille. Les pensionnaires prennent le nom de « pommes d’Eve ».Dans
les années 1920, John J. Fitzgerald chroniqueur au Morning Telegraph est en
reportage à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Il se rend compte que New York est appelée
« Big Apple » par des amateurs de courses de chevaux. Il reprend l’expression
dans sa chronique « Around Big Apple ». Ainsi au croisement de Broadway et de
la West 54th Street, vous verrez un panneau « Big Apple Corner » installé en son
honneur. Le terme « Big Apple » est repris dans les années 1930, où New York et
Harlem deviennent la capitale du jazz. Car les musiciens - pour évoquer le trac,
la boule qui leur noue la gorge - parlent de « Big Apple ». Dans les années 1970,
le terme « Big Apple » est officialisé par la New York Convention et le Visitor‘s

During 19th century New York, there were many
brothels. Beautiful, fresh courtesans were
referred to as apples. A French aristocrat, Evelyne
Claudine de Saint-Evremond opened one of the
first salons for young people from good families.
The boarders took on the name “Eve’s Apples.” In
the 1920s, John J. Fitzgerald, a columnist for the
Morning Telegraph, was on assignment in New
Orleans. He realized that amateur horse racers
called New York the Big Apple. He took up the
expression “Around the Big Apple” in his column.
Consequently, at the intersection of Broadway
and West 53th Street, you’ll see a sign that says
“Big Apple Corner” installed in his honor. The
term, “Big Apple,” was taken up again in the
1930s, when New York and Harlem became the
Jazz capital. Musicians spoke of the “Big Apple”
to describe the ball of anxiety they felt in their
Adam’s Apple before going on stage.

cette exposition exceptionnelle qui réunit plus de 80 objets
polynésiens connus pour incarner des atua, des dieux. C’est

polynésiens pré-européens dispersés et conservés à travers
le monde entier sont réunis pour mettre en perspective la
question du sacré et le rôle de ses réceptacles dans la vie

Michel Bourez, l’un des meilleurs
surfeurs mondiaux

surfers in the world
En novembre dernier, Michel Bourez remportait pour la 2e fois
le Reef «Hawaïan Pro». En quelques années, ce Polynésien de
bientôt 30 ans est parvenu à se hisser parmi les meilleurs surfeurs
de la planète ! Affichant un parcours sportif exceptionnel, il a
surpris régulièrement les plus grands noms de ce sport (Andy
Irons, Kelly Slater…) et étoffé son palmarès d’année en année.
En 2009, il intègrait le prestigieux circuit «WCT» réunissant
les meilleurs surfeurs professionnels mondiaux. Après Vetea
David, il devenait alors le second Tahitien dans toute l’histoire
du surf à atteindre ce niveau. En 2013, il a terminé en treizième
position dans le classement mondial du circuit «ASP». Nul
doute que pour cette nouvelle saison 2014, le surfeur Tahitien
aura à coeur d’améliorer encore ses résultats et pourquoi pas
signer une victoire lors d’une des épreuves de ce tour «ASP».
Last November, Michel Bourez won the Reef Hawaiian Pro for the
second time. In just a few years, this 30-year-old Polynesian has
managed to rank among the best surfers on the planet! Displaying
exceptional athletic prowess, he has regularly surprised the
biggest names in the sport, such as Andy Irons and Kelly Slater;
and year after year, he has racked up awards. In 2009, he entered
the prestigious WCT circuit that brought all the best surfers in the
world together. After Vetea Davis, he became the second Tahitian
in the history of surfing to achieve this level. In 2013, he finished
thirteenth in the ASP circuit world rankings. There is no doubt that
for this new 2014 season, this Tahitian surfer will be determined
to beat his current rankings and gain victory on one of the stops
of the ASP tour.

recognized in the arts and culture,
their common denominator is their
connection to Tahiti. They are ambassadors
because they represent excellence. They
lead by example, are high achievers, yet
also possess a beauty and elegance that
is uniquely French Polynesian. These are
qualities very much in harmony with the
values of Air Tahiti Nui, French Polynesia’s
international airline. Since its creation in
1998, this company has strived to highlight
all of Tahiti’s human and environmental
resources. In alignment with this goal,
ATN accompanies, and therefore supports,
its ambassadors and their activities in
French Polynesia and abroad. This is a
mission that the airline loyally carries
out in order to encourage young French
Polynesian prospects while promoting all
the richness and talents of our islands on
the international stage. Today, Air Tahiti
Nui sponsors over fifty ambassadors.
Stemming from the world of culture,
sports, and entertainment, they contribute
to enhancing Tahiti as a destination. Some

Teiva LC
En février dernier, Teiva LC a été choisi par Florent Pagny
pour son interprétation de «l’hymne à l’amour» d’Edith Piaf,
lors du concours télévisé «The Voice», Saison 3. Ce chanteur
polynésien avait été repéré par l’équipe de l’émission
diffusée sur TF1 grâce à des vidéos de lui circulant sur la
chaîne You Tube et les réseaux sociaux. Plus de 30 ans après
la participation de John Gabilou à l’Eurovision, Teiva LC
est le deuxième Polynésien à représenter le fenua lors d’un
concours prestigieux de ce type. En mars, Teiva - qui fêtait
ses 36 ans - est devenu le 19e talent à accéder aux épreuves
ultimes, toutes saisons confondues, de «The Voice».
Last February, Florent Pagny chose Teiva LC to be on his team
for his rendition of Edith Piaf’s «l’hymne à l’amour» during
the televised competition, The Voice, Season 3, broadcast on
the French channel TF1. This French Polynesian singer was
discovered by the show’s crew, thanks to videos of him on You
Tube and on social networking sites. More than thirty years
after Tahitian John Gabilou’s appearance on Eurovision, Teiva LC
is the second French Polynesian to represent the fenua (home
country) during such a prestigious competition of this kind. In
March, Teiva—who turned 36—became the 19th contestant of
the season to make it to the final battles of The Voice.
Moena est née dans le monde de
la danse tahitienne. Dès l’âge de
trois ans, elle suit un peu partout
sa mère, elle-même danseuse, et
reproduit ses pas. Danseuse «star»
de la troupe «Tahiti Ora» menée
par Tumata Robinson, elle est
également la principale chorégraphe
de ses spectacles. Elle a été sacrée
meilleure danseuse en 2011, en
danse solo, lors du 159e Heiva dans
la catégorie « Hura Tau ». Elle a
participé avec la troupe à plusieurs
tournées internationales (France,
Japon) et contribue également au
rayonnement de la Polynésie en
donnant un peu partout dans le
monde des cours de Ori Tahiti, ainsi
qu’en animant des «master class» de
danse tahitienne.

Moena was born into the world of
Tahitian dance. As early as 3 years-old, she followed her mother, a dancer,
almost everywhere she went and she copied her movements. Star dancer
of the Tahiti Ora dance troupe led by Tumata Robinson, she is also the main
choreographer of her performances. In 2011, she was crowned best solo
dancer during the 159th Heiva in the Hura Tau category. She has performed
with Tahiti Ora on several international tours in Europe and Japan. She also
contributes to the promotion of French Polynesia through giving Ori Tahiti
dance workshops and conducting master classes in Tahitian dance around
the world.

Résidant à Tahiti depuis de nombreuses années, ce photographe de
renommée internationale est passionné par la Polynésie et les cultures
austronésiennes. Il a rapporté des photos exceptionnelles de son immersion
dans le quotidien des populations indigènes de Taiwan. Des clichés qui
suscitent de nouvelles interrogations sur les liens culturels qui les unissent
aux Polynésiens et qui ont fait l’objet d’une exposition de plusieurs mois au
Musée de Tahiti et des îles en 2012. Pour Pacific Voyagers, il a également
établi le reportage photographique d’expéditions en pirogue à voile
traditionnelles polynésiennes en faveur de la sauvegarde des océans et
des cultures autochtones. En février, il a participé, en Nouvelle-Zélande, à
une importante cérémonie d’accueil de pirogues traditionnelles dans l’île
du Nord. Enfin, en juin et juillet 2014, il participera également activement
à une série d’événements centrés sur l’île de Raiatea et son célèbre marae
de Taputapuatea. En provenance de Hawaii, la célèbre pirogue de voyage
polynésienne Hokule’a y est attendu en juillet lors d’une des escales
marquantes du tour du monde qu’elle effectue. Après un périple dans
des îles polynésiennes voisines de Tahiti (Cook, Samoa etc), elle prendra
la direction de la Nouvelle-Zélande où elle sera accueillie lors de grandes
festivités en novembre 2014. De là, Hokule’a se lancera dans un tour du
monde nautique d’une durée de deux ans représentant une occassion
unique de faire découvrir la navigation traditionnelle polynésienne.
A resident of Tahiti for many years, this internationally acclaimed photographer
is passionate about French Polynesia and austronesian cultures. He took
exceptional photos during his immersion into the daily life of indigenous
peoples of Taiwan. His work stirred up new debates over the cultural
connections linking these populations to Polynesians and was the subject
of a 2012 exhibit that lasted several months at the Musée de Tahiti et des
îles. For Pacific Voyagers, he photo-documented Polynesian traditional sailing
canoe expeditions in support of the protection of oceans and indigenous
cultures. In February, he participated in an important ceremony that welcomed
traditional canoes on the North Island of New Zealand. In June and July 2014,
he will partake in a series of events centered around the island of Raiatea and
its famous Taputapuatea marae. In July, Holuke’a—the famous Polynesian
voyaging canoe—will be arriving from Hawaii for a memorable stopover on its
current tour around the world. After a journey through Tahiti’s neighboring
Polynesian islands (such as the Cook Islands and Samoa), it will head towards
New Zealand where in November 2014, it will be welcomed with huge
festivities. From there, Hokule’a will embark on a nautical tour of the world
that will last two years, which will present a unique opportunity for people to
discover traditional Polynesian navigation.

bonheur toutes sortes de styles dans ses chansons : hula,
reggae, slow, zouk… ; et les langues : le tahitien, le français,
l’anglais. Sabrina est invitée dans de nombreux pays qui
lui donnent la possibilité de promouvoir la musique et
la culture polynésiennes à travers ses chansons. Depuis
2009, le Japon, notamment, l’accueille chaque année
en tant que marraine du « Heiva i Tokyo ». Sa chanson,
Tu’e popo (Tape le ballon, ndlr), a été choisie pour être la
chanson officielle du Championnat du monde de beach
soccer qui s’est tenu en septembre 2013 à Tahiti. Elle l’a
interpretée devant les caméras du monde entier. Elle est
présente au «Heiva i Los Angeles», en avril 2014.
Sabrina has been singing since she was a little girl. She
defines herself humorously as being “Poly-nesian,” due to a
rich cultural background that allows her to happily merge all
kinds of styles into her singing: hula, reggae, slow, zouk…as
well as languages: Tahitian, French, and English. Sabrina is
invited to perform in several countries, which gives her the
opportunity to promote French Polynesian music and culture
through her songs. Since 2009, Japan has welcomed her each
year as the godmother of “Heiva i Tokyo.” Her song, “Tu’e

Pepena
Pepena, veut dire en marquisien “création ou
réinterprétation”. Ce groupe acoustique, formé en 2010
par quatre jeunes Polynésiens unis par la musique,
offre un son acoustique mêlant agilement le rock, le
blues, le jazz ou encore le reggae… et tout cela, chanté
en anglais, français, espagnol et tahitien. Porté par la
voix de Raimana, Pepena a su trouver une place sur la
scène musicale, avec essentiellement des reprises de
standards internationaux, mais aussi de vieilles chansons
tahitiennes et des créations. En décembre 2013, le groupe
a sorti son premier album intitulé «Unu» et contenant 12
titres. Il est disponible, notamment, sur les plateformes
de téléchargements habituels. Autre première, en mars
2014, Pepena a réalisé une série de concerts à l’étranger
lors du célèbre festival polynésien «Pacifica» à Auckland
en Nouvelle-Zélande. Le succès a été au rendez-vous pour
la formation musicale qui prévoit de s’exporter davantage
en 2014 avec des rendez-vous en Europe et au Japon.
Pepena is Marquesan for “creation or reinterpretation.” This

Originaire de la côte ouest de Tahiti, ce sportif de 34 ans est un des athlètes
les plus titrés et respectés du monde de la glisse polynésienne. Si il est à l’aise
en va’a, la pirogue traditionnelle polynésienne, c’est avant tout en Stand Up
Paddle que Georges Cronsteadt se démarque et s’impose ! Au sein des diverses
disciplines du Stand Up Paddle, il est spécialisé dans les courses de type «Race»
et «Long Distance» se positionnant dans les cinq meilleurs athlètes au niveau
mondial. Georges Cronsteadt enchaine les belles performances et les victoires
dans les compétitions tant tahitiennes qu’internationales. Tout récemment, en
mars 2014, il a remporté une nouvelle fois une course internationale de SUP au
Mexique. Athlète complet, souvent en déplacement à l’étranger, il a également
à coeur le développement du Stand Up Paddle à Tahiti, lieu où cette discipline
dispose d’un fort potentiel ! Cette année, il sera un des acteurs majeurs du
«Waterman Tahiti Tour», une série de 5 grandes courses de SUP, comptant pour
le championnat de Tahiti de cette discipline. La finale de ce premier «Waterman
Tahiti Tour», se tiendra en décembre 2014 lors du «Bora Bora Ironmana
KHT Liquid Festival», événement soutenu par notre compagnie. Une année
prometteuse donc pour Georges Cronsteadt et le SUP Tahitien.
Originally from the west coast of Tahiti, this 34-year-old is one of the most decorated
and respected athletes in the world of French Polynesian boarding sports. Although
at ease in a va’a, the traditional Polynesian canoe, it is above all in Stand Up Paddle
boarding that Georges Cronsteadt stands out and makes his mark! Among all the
diverse categories of Stand Up Paddle boarding, he specializes in surf racing and
long distance, and ranks among the five best SUP athletes in the world. Georges
Cronsteadt has a history of beautiful performances and victories in international as
well as in Tahitian competitions. Very recently, in March 2014, he once again swept
an international SUP race in Mexico. An all-around athlete often competing abroad,
he still dedicates himself to furthering Stand Up Paddle boarding in Tahiti, the place
where this discipline has enormous potential. This year, he will be a major contender
in the “Waterman Tahiti Tour,” a series of five big SUP races that count towards

chanteur tahitien à s’être classé successivement N°1

Chanteur, auteur, compositeur, producteur de
musique electro dance et pop, il a notamment

Ken Carlter became the first Tahitian singer to have
been been successively ranked number 1 on the Top

Singer, writer, composer, and electro dance and pop
music producer, he notably signed a double pop

Courting waves since he was 4 years-old,

Teahupoo wave in Tahiti, where he lives
with his family. He has already been the
surfing champion of French Polynesia four
times in the under 12 years-old category,
and has climbed onto several podiums for
international competitions in the United
States and in Europe, notably in Hossegor and
Biarritz. He has already gained the attention
of sponsors, and therefore participates fully
in projecting a positive image of Tahiti’s
younger generations. The youngest of Air
Tahiti Nui’s ambassadors, he will again depart
for overseas in July 2014 for competitions on
Californian waves; and in September 2014, he
will compete off the Landes coast of France, a
top European surf spot. There, he will uphold
the colors of Tahitian surf.

Vaast s’annonce déjà comme un nouvel
espoir du surf tahitien. À 12 ans, il n’hésite
pas à se confronter à la vague du célèbre
spot de Teahupoo, à Tahiti, où il vit avec sa
famille. Il a déjà été quatre fois champion
de Polynésie de surf dans la catégorie des
moins de 12 ans et est monté sur plusieurs
podiums aux États-Unis ou en Europe
lors de compétitions internationales,
notamment à Hossegor et Biarritz. Il a aussi
déjà su se faire remarquer de sponsors
qui lui font confiance et participe ainsi à
l’image positive de Tahiti auprès des jeunes
générations. Benjamin des ambassadeurs
d’Air Tahiti Nui, il sera de nouveau en
déplacement à l’étranger en juillet 2014
pour des compétitions sur les vagues
californiennes et en septembre 2014 sur la
côte landaise, haut lieu du surf européen. Là,
il portera haut les couleurs du surf tahitien.

déroulée à Papeete. En décembre dernier,
Dany Gérard était revenu à Tahiti avec six
médailles d’or obtenues aux États-Unis dans
deux compétitions internationales. Il vient
également de remporter le championnat «Pan
America 2014» en ceinture violette Ultra Heavy,
à Irvine, en Californie. Une médaille qui lui échappait depuis 2 ans. Aujourd’hui ceinture
marron, il se prépare pour une prochaine compétition programmée fin avril… au Brésil.

Comme nos vols sont «long courrier», vous restez assis et
inactif pendant de longues périodes. Le décalage horaire et
la perturbation des cycles de sommeil peuvent causer des
désagréments. Afin d’améliorer votre confort et pour que le
vol se déroule dans les meilleures conditions, voici quelques
recommandations :
Air Tahiti Nui cares about your comfort and well-being during
your flight. As all of our flights are long distance, you may
be seated and inactive for long periods of time. Additionally,
the crossing of time zones and the disruption to normal
sleeping patterns could involve a potential discomfort. To
stay healthy during the flight and improve your comfort level
we recommend the following :
NOURRITURE ET BOISSONS
EATING AND DRINKING
› Buvez au minimum un litre d’eau, voire deux, pendant le vol.
› Buvez fréquemment des jus de fruits.
› Évitez de boire du café, du thé ou de l’alcool, ou du moins buvez avec modération,
car ces boissons augmentent la déshydratation.
› Utilisez une crème hydratante, afin d’éviter les effets de dessèchement dus
à la haute altitude.
› Retirez vos verres de contacts et portez des lunettes, afin d’éviter l’irritation
des yeux.
› Mangez sans excès, afin d’éviter une indigestion.
› Drink at least one to two litres of water during your flight.
› Drink juices frequently during the flight.
› Avoid drinking coffee, tea and alcohol.
If you do so, drink in moderation. These beverages increase the body’s dehydratation.
› Use a skin moisturizer to reduce drying effects of high altitude.
› Remove contact lenses and wear glasses to avoid eye irritation.
› Avoid over-eating as it may cause indigestion.

Nous vous encourageons à faire les exercices indiqués sur la page ci-contre.
Ils sont conçus pour relaxer certains groupes de muscles. Il est conseillé de
faire ces exercices pendant 5 minutes toutes les heures. Vous pouvez également
marcher dans l’allée et éviter de garder les jambes croisées trop longtemps.
IMPORTANT : si ces exercices devaient vous causer le moindre inconfort, nous
vous prions de ne pas les faire. Vous pouvez également réaliser ces exercices en
vous aidant du film diffusé sur Tiare TV. Ravanui, Miss Tahiti 2001, est votre guide.
À LA DESCENTE
Lors de la descente, vos oreilles et vos sinus peuvent vous incommoder. Voici
quelques suggestions pour vous aider à équilibrer la pression entre oreille
interne et gorge : bâillez ou avalez fréquemment, pincez vos narines, puis
soufflez franchement en gardant la bouche fermée. Si vous voyagez avec un
jeune enfant, donnez lui sa tétine pendant la descente. Si vous ne vous sentez

EXERCISES
We encourage you to do the following exercises. These exercises are designed
to stretch certain muscle groups. We recommend you to do these exercises for
four to five minutes every hour. You should occasionally walk down the aisle and
try to avoid crossing your legs for long periods of time. IMPORTANT : If these
exercises cause you any discomfort, please do not do them. The film played on
Tiare TV can help you doing these exercices. Ravanui, Miss Tahiti 2001, is your
guide.
ON DESCENT
On descent ears and sinuses may cause discomfort. Here are a few
suggestions : Yawn or swallow frequently. Pinch your nostrils together and blow
firmly into your cheeks with your mouth closed. If you are travelling with an
infant feed or give your baby a pacifier during descent. These above actions
help reduce the pressure between your middle ear chamber and your throat.
If you feel unwell during the flight, alert one of our cabin crew.

Depuis le 08 septembre 2010, tous les voyageurs ressortissants des pays
bénéficiaires du Programme d’exemption de visa pour les Etats-Unis,
doivent s’acquitter d’un montant de 14 Dollars US pour l’obtention de
l’autorisation ESTA.
L’autorisation électronique de voyage (Electonic System for travel
Authorization), obligatoire depuis Janvier 2009 pour tout voyageur prévoyant
de séjourner aux Etats-Unis ou en transit, était délivrée à titre gracieux.
Désormais, elle permettra de financer la promotion du tourisme vers les EtatsUnis outre les frais administratifs générés.
Le passager peut effectuer le paiement de ces frais par carte de crédit ou de
paiement au moment de soumettre sa demande sur le site internet officiel :
https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Le formulaire d’approbation délivré – à mettre à
jour si nécessaire – reste valable pour deux ans sous réserve de validité du
passeport. Il est vivement recommandé de procéder à la demande au plus tard
72 heures avant le départ et de conserver une copie sur soi en cas de besoin à
l’enregistrement.
Pour rappel, l’ESTA est un dispositif mis en place par le bureau des douanes
des Etats-Unis pour renforcer les dispositifs sécuritaire et de sûreté. Il est
de la responsabilité de chaque passager de se procurer tous les documents,
visas et permis particuliers nécessaires à son voyage, et de se conformer
à la réglementation en vigueur (lois, règlements, décisions, exigences et
dispositions) dans les Etats de départ, de destination et de transit.
Since September 08, 2010, all travelers who are nationals of countries
benefiting from the United States visa exemption program, must pay an
amount of USD 14.000 to obtain the ESTA authorization.
The electronic travel authorization (Electronic System for travel
Authorization), mandatory since January 2009 for any traveler planning to
stay in, or to transit through the United States, used to be delivered for free.
Now this cost will help to finance the promotion of tourism to the United
States after the administrative costs it also generates.
The passenger may pay this fee by bankcard when submitting his/her
application on the official Internet website: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. The
approval form delivered – to be updated if needed – remains valid for two
years subject to the passport being valid. It is strongly recommended to
proceed with the application 72 hours at the latest before departure time
and to keep a copy on you should you need it to check in.
As a reminder, the ESTA is a device implemented by the United States
Customs Office to reinforce homeland safety and security programs. It is
the responsibility of each passenger to obtain all documents, visas and
specific permits required by his/her trip, and to comply with all regulations
in force (laws, regulations, legal decisions, requirements and provisions) in
all departure, destination and transit countries.
