法学部経営法学科 １ 年次の「国際コミュニケ−ション海外研修」が、本年度も関係各位のご
理解とご支援により、８ 月15日から ８ 月30日の日程で、ワシントン州のシアトルにあるシアト
ル大学（ SU ）で行われる第 ２ 回目のプログラムとして実施されました。2001年にワシントン
大学で本プログラムがスタートしてから通算で第11回目となります。
福岡大学法学部のウエストン教授の指導の下で、本海外研修の準備が周到になされ、15日間
の短期研修ではあるけれどもその内容は充実したものとなりました。本研修の主要な内容は、
英語による講義の受講だけでなく、ワシントン州上級裁判所・連邦地区裁判所・ボ−イング社
工場・法律事務所・シアトル貿易開発協議会・任天堂・日本総領事館などを訪問し、裁判官・
弁護士・州議会議員・企業実務家・外交官などによる講義や説明を受け質疑応答を行うという
ものです。このような経験は、日本では得ることができない貴重なものということができます。
この夏期海外研修における講義や訪問活動には、シアトル大学の国際留学生センタ−のライ
アン・グリーン所長 ; デイル・ワタナベ留学生アドバイザーやサンドラ・ブイ留学生センター・
プログラムコーディネーターおよびセンタースタッフならびに支援学生の指導の下で行われ、
インストラクターのマケイン・スピラスースの指導により講義等の後でのまとめや確認などを
するというプログラムの構成を取っています。現地の企業訪問では、本研修の参加学生を ６ グ
ループに分けて、各グループごとに英語で報告を行うことにしました。このようなプログラム
により、アメリカの法政事情についての知識だけでなく現地の実際の状況を体験することがで
き、参加学生の今後の勉学や将来の進路決定に寄与することは大きいものと考えられます。
本海外研修プログラムは、今年で通算11回目となり、ウエストン教授のご尽力と本学および
法学部の支援体制により、年々充実した研修内容となってきています。参加学生は、本研修を
契機としてその後も結び付きを強め、卒業後、社会人として活躍しております。これらの先輩
に続いて、本年度参加者の皆さんが、本研修の貴重な体験を糧に積極的に勉学を進め、各々の
希望する就職先や目的を成就して実社会へ飛び立って行くことを期待しております。
最後に、本海外研修のプログラムの開発、シアトルの関係機関・関係者との連絡や交渉、学
生の現地での受入れの手配、学生の引率などをすべて意欲的に実施していただいたウエストン
教授、シアトル大学の国際留学生センターのライアン・グリーン所長、デイル・ワタナベ留学
生アドバイザーやサンドラ・ブイ留学生センター・プログラムコーディネーターおよびセンター
スタッフならびに支援学生の皆さん、インタ−カルチュアル・ホ−ムステイ＆サービスのアイ
リーン・ブ−プレ社長をはじめとするホスト・フャミリーの方々に心から感謝する次第であり
ます。
[Translation] With the support and understanding again of all those involved with
Fukuoka University Business Law Program at Seattle University (3rd program), we
were able to carry out this year's program (8/15-8/30/11). (This program originally
started at University of Washington 2001-2008.) Under the direction of the law faculty's
Professor Weston's directions, all preparations were made for this short but fulfilling
program. This program most important contents consists of not only lectures carried
out in English but also visits to a Washington State Superior Court, Federal District
Court, Boeing, a law firm, the Greater Seattle Trade Development Alliance, Nintendo
and the Japanese Consulate General and the Boeing Co. In addition, students listened
to presentations by judges, lawyers, a state legislator, business representatives and
diplomats followed by Q & A. with the speakers. All of these invaluable experiences
can not have been experienced in Japan.
Under the auspices of the Seattle University International Student Center (ISC) s
Director Ryan Greene; International Student Advisor Dale Watanabe; International
Student Advisor/Program Coordinator Sandra Buis, as well as other staff members,
the schedule of lectures and activities were ably carried out. In addition, SU Site
Instructor Markane Spiraseuth followed up with students after each lecture to check
their comprehension of key points and engage them in discussion. Company visits are
divided into six different teams. Through this kind of program students not only learn
about law and policymaking but acquire practical experience. Moreover, this kind of
experience also contributes to students future plans.
This is the eleventh year of this overseas program, which thanks to Professor
Weston's efforts and those of the law faculty's support staff, has increasingly become
with each year an even more fulfilling curriculum. The present participants will take
this program as an opportunity to strengthen their ties to future goals after graduation
as active adults in society. I hope that like their seniors, the present students will build
on this program positively in their studies. I also hope that they will all be able to
realize their desired employment goals.
Finally, I would like to express my thanks to Profess Weston who enthusiastically
collaborates with all of the program's partners to operate this program as well as care
for students stateside as their escort instructor; SU ISC Ryan Greene, Dale Watanabe,
Sandra Buis, and other staff members; Intercultural Homestays and Services President
Eileen Beaupre as well as all the homestay families who received our students for their
earnest efforts on the behalf of our students.

In spite of a tough year for Japan due to the triple disaster in N.E. Japan and its
related economic woes, the Fukuoka University Business Law Program in Seattle
celebrated its 11th anniversary. However, after eight years at the University of
Washington, this was our third program at Seattle University. Eileen Beaupre,
President of Intercultural Homestay and Services continued as our reliable provider of
homestays. I want to express my special appreciation to all at the Seattle University
International Student Center (ISC) ‒ Director Ryan Greene; Student Advisor Dale
Watanabe, Program Coordinator Sandra Bui, Administrator Assistant Teresa Berry, part
time staffer ‒ Jennifer Wascher, site instructor Mark Spiraseuth and five student leaders
for their wonderful support and contributions to the growth of the program. Everyone
did their very best to make sure our group felt welcome at Seattle University and in
Seattle. They also continued to maintain the high standards of this program.
This year the Japanese Foreign Ministry started a new fund to promote study
overseas. After applying, our program was granted a subsidy for each student this
summer. Our students truly maximized their practical experiences in and outside
of Seattle University. They learned No action, No results; Don't be late for your
future; and Connect the Dots. Moreover, students in six different groups visited
local companies based on their selected topics: Sports Business Strategies and
Future Challenges in an IT Society, Diversity and Promotion of IT Education at
the Elementary School Level: John Stanford International School; City Promotion
and the Fashion Industry: Fashion Network Seattle ‒ A Case Study,
Child Abuse
and Domestic Violence among Asians and Pacific Islanders Problems & Measures,
Comparative Study of Disaster Relief: Peace Winds America- A Case Study; and
Training Programs for the Social Reintegration of the Homeless: Farestart.
On a special note, Rika Morofuji, a member of the 2007 Seattle Class, was given a special
Kuwaiti government grant last year to study law, other subjects as well as Arabic in
Kuwait until this summer. Please see Morofuji's special report on her experiences. To
follow up further on what they learned during the spring and the summer, students visited
Fukuoka International School, Fukuoka Chamber of Commerce, General Children's Center,
Japan Red Cross Fukuoka Prefectural Office and Fukuoka City Hall's Welfare Division and
Super Sports XEBIO to gather more information on their topics for their fall presentations.
I look forward to working with SU ISC taking next year's program in innovative
directions to foster international legal minds as well as the next generation of Japanese
leaders in the global community.
東日本を襲った大災害とその経済的打撃により厳しい年となった2011年の中で、福岡大学経営
法学科シアトルプログラムは11年目を迎えることになりました。最初の８ 年はワシントン大学で、
シアトル大学に変わってから今回が ３ 回目となります。インターカルチュラル・ホームステイ＆
サービスのアイリーン・ブープレ社長には初回からホームステイの手配を担当して頂いています。
シアトル大学国際留学生センター（ ISC ）に対し、私は心から感謝の意を表したいと思います。
センター長のライアン・グリーン、留学生アドバイザーのデイル・ワタナベ、プログラムコーディ
ネーターのサンドラ・ブイ、事務補佐のテレサ・ベリー、パートタイム職員のジェニファー・ワッ
シャー、サイトインストラクターのマケイン・スピラスース、そして素晴らしい支援でこのプロ
グラムの発展に寄与してくれた ５ 人の学生リーダーの皆さんです。私達がシアトル大学に快く受
け入れられるようベストを尽くし、このプログラムの高い水準を維持してくれました。
文部科学省は海外研修促進のための新たな基金を今年度スタートさせ、この夏期プログラム
の各参加学生に対し助成金がおりました。シアトル大学 ISC のスタッフも言及されているよう
に、学生達は大学内外での実践的経験を最大限に活かせたと思います。彼等は真に「行動なく
しては結果なし」
、「将来に備えることに遅れてはならない」、「学んだ一つ一つの点を繋いでい
く」ことの大切さを肌で感じることができました。学生達は ６ つのグループに分かれ自分達が
選んだテーマに基づき地元の企業や組織を訪問しました。各グループのテーマは、
「 IT 社会に
おけるスポーツビジネス戦略と今後の課題」、
「小学校レベルにおける IT 教育の多様性と促進：
ジョン・スタンフォード・インターナショナルスクール」
、「都市のプロモーションとファッショ
ン産業：事例研究―ファッション・ネットワーク・シアトル」
、「アジア系および太平洋島民の
児童虐待と家庭内暴力：問題と対策」、
「災害救助の比較研究：事例研究―ピースウィンズ・ア
メリカ」、「ホームレス社会復帰のための訓練プログラム：フェアスタート」です。前期および
夏期研修で学んだことに加え、後期には各テーマに関連する福岡の企業や組織―福岡インター
ナショナル・スクール、福岡商工会議所、こども総合相談センター、日本赤十字社福岡県支部、
福岡市役所保健福祉局、スーパースポーツ XEBIO ―を訪れ、後期プレゼンテーションのため
の情報収集に努めました。
また、2007年度プログラムに参加した諸藤里佳さんはクウェート政府の特別助成金を昨年受
け、この夏までクウェートで法律とアラビア語を学びました。彼女の体験報告をご覧下さい。
来年度プログラムもシアトル大学 ISC と協力し、国際的視野を持つ法律専門家と国際社会に
おける日本の次世代リーダーを育てることができるように革新的方向を目指して行きたいと思
います。

As the Director of the International Student Center at Seattle University I consider myself very privileged
and honored to have such a close relationship with Fukuoka University. This past summer I completed my
second year with the Summer in Seattle Program and I am thrilled to see how successful the program is
as it has evolved over the years. Clearly, the success the program has achieved over the years is attributed
directly to 1) the outstanding students from Fukuoka who have applied and competed year after year to
enter the program, and 2) Professor Stephanie Weston's excellent coordination of the program which is
literally a full year commitment for each summer program, and 3) Dr. Komei Hatada's leadership as the
Dean of the Faculty of Law to continuously support the program by sending Fukuoka students to Seattle
has also had a major impact on the overall success of the program. I want to thank both Professor Weston
and Dean Hatada for their steadfast commitment and devotion to international education and to providing
an educational environment where crossing borders is both valued and appreciated. All of us here at
Seattle University commend the both of them for their exceptional work and dedication. I have spent
sixteen years in higher education and I have yet to see an intensive summer program with more rigor and
academic and community engagement than the Fukuoka Univertity Business Law Program in Seattle.
One of the great aspects of being a host campus for the Fukuoka University Business Law Program is
that the faculty, staff, and students get the privilege and opportunity of interacting with Fukuoka's best
and brightest students, and the program leaves all of us with so many lasting and fond memories it is
often very difficult to see the program come to an end each year. During their time here this past summer
students did site visits to Nintendo, the Japanese Consulate, the Trade Development Alliance of Greater
Seattle, the law firm of Lane Powell. And they also visited King County and Federal District Courthouses.
In addition to these site visits, students received a business lecture from Seattle University Professor
Ben Kim from the Albers School of Business & Economics. And they also received a law lecture from
Professor Mark Chinen of the Seattle University School of Law and spent time with Dr. Victoria Jones,
Seattle University's Associate Provost for Global Engagement. Several other dignitaries and scholars
met with the students during their time in Seattle, including King County Courthouse Judge Mary Yu,
Washington State Representative Bob Hasegawa, and King 5 News Anchor Lori Matsukawa. All of these
site visits confirm my assertion about the academic rigor of the program.
The International Student Center at Seattle University was honored to host your talented and
dedicated students this past summer. The energy they brought to the program was felt by every
student, faculty and staff member that worked to make the program a success. Traveling almost 7,400
miles to Seattle from Fukuoka can be daunting enough as the flight is very long. So to arrive at Seattle
University in such a positive, engaging, studious, charming, and devoted manner is testament to how
prepared Fukuoka students were to get the most out of their experiences in Seattle. We thank all of
you for enriching our institution of higher education. And we are very excited about the new class of
students arriving in August, 2012.
Everyone involved with the program at Seattle University has spoken so highly of their experience.
This highlights that the interpersonal exchanges throughout the program have had such a large and
positive impact on our educational development and level of cultural awareness. As you all move
forward with your educational endeavors I encourage you to stay active in both the Fukuoka and Seattle
University communities as these two higher education campuses are committed to seeing you succeed as
you move forward in you careers and in establishing lives of integrity and purpose.
As you prepare to come to Seattle University in 2012, please keep in mind we are growing and
expanding services to you as we move forward as a University. As you may know, U.S. News and
World Report's Best Colleges 2012 has ranked Seattle University among the top ten universities in the
West that offer a full range of masters and undergraduate programs. We just completed a $10,000,000.00
addition to our University Recreation Center and we also opened the Lemieux Library & McGoldrick
Learning Commons which combines new construction and a renovation to offer a state-of-the-art
library and learning commons facility of approximately 125,000 square feet. This new facility blends
student academic support services, scholarly research, collaborative learning, and social interaction in a
technology-rich, light-filled environment. We look forward to seeing you all soon!!

夏、私にとり ２ 年目のシアトル夏期研修プログラムを終え、年毎に進化してきたこのプログラムが素晴らしいもの
であるとの印象を強く持ちました。明らかに、このプログラムの成功は １ ）プログラムに参加するため選考された
福岡大学の優れた学生達、２ ）夏期プログラムを中心とした １ 年間の取り組みにおけるウエストン教授の優れた調
整力、３ ）シアトルに学生を送り出し変わらぬ支援を頂いた畠田公明法学部長の指導力によるものです。畠田法学
部長とウエストン教授が国際教育に強い熱意で取り組み、
「国境を越える」ことが有意義である教育環境を提供さ
れていることに感謝の意を表したいと思います。シアトル大学の私達は皆、お二人の類ないご尽力を賞賛致してお
ります。私は高等教育に16年間携わって来ましたが、この夏期研修ほどに堅実で学習内容が充実し地域との関わり
を持った短期プログラムを他に知りません。
このプログラムの受け入れ大学になることで、シアトル大学のスタッフや学生は福岡大学の素晴らしい学生と交
流する機会に恵まれ、心に残る楽しい思い出にプログラムが終了するときはつらいほどです。この夏、学生達は任
天堂、日本総領事館、シアトル圏貿易開発連合、レイン・パウエル法律事務所、キング郡、連邦地方裁判所など
を訪問しました。さらに、ビジネス経済アルバーススクールのベン・キム教授からビジネスのレクチャーをロース
クールのマーク・チネン教授から法律のレクチャーを受け、ビクトリア・ジョーンズ国際関与担当准副学長との時
間を持ちました。他にもキング郡のメアリー・ユー判事、ワシントン州のボブ・ハセガワ議員、キング5ニュース
のアンカーであるロリ・マツカワなど地域の重要な人物や学者に会っています。このような訪問は、このプログラ
ムの持つ学術的堅実さについて私の確信を強めるものでした。
シアトル大学留学生センターは有能で熱意のある学生を迎えることができ、嬉しく思っています。プログラム運営
に関わったシアトル大学の学生やスタッフ一同が彼等の持つエネルギーを感じ取りました。福岡からシアトルまで約
7,400マイル、長いフライトを経てシアトル大学に到着した彼等は、前向きで学ぶことに熱心で魅力的でした。シア
トルでの経験を最大限に活かすため、十分な準備をされたに違いありません。皆さんが高等教育機関であるシアトル

「2012年ベストカレッジ」は全領域の修士および学士課程を持つ西部地域における上位10大学の中にシアトル大学
をランキングしています。私達は大学リクリエーションセンターに1000万ドルの追加を終えたところです。また、
約125,000平方フィートの最新鋭図書館とラーニングコモンズ施設として新しい建物と改装からなるルミュー図書
館＆マクゴールドリック・コモンズをオープン致しました。この新しい施設はテクノロジー満載の明るい環境の中

personally work with the last three classes and help build upon the foundation of the
past and continue the fine traditions of this program. This year it was my pleasure to
accompany the class on visits, and help teach about the relocation and incarceration
experience of Seattle Japanese Americans during WWII. As each class completes
the experience every year, the program continues to grow in various exciting
international educational directions. Professor Stephanie Weston has created a program
that embodies the spirit of Seattle University and its mission to educate the whole
person for a just and humane world. The experiences all the classes have gained
are immeasurable in fostering greater global understanding between our two nations.
Many lives, both on the Japanese and American side, have been enriched because
of this experience. Person-to-person exchanges are the basic building blocks for a
true global society. We look forward to many more years of cultural and educational
exchange between our two nations, our two schools, and you and me. The future is
bright. 明るい未来を。

Greetings from Seattle University! Our farewell at Bellarmine Circle was sad but on the
brighter side you have grown so much in just a two-week stay in Seattle. Imagine ten years
from now, where will you be and what will you be doing? We hope that this year's program has
positively impacted your personal development and confidence in using your English skills.
Some of the highlights of the program were the visit to the law firm Lane Powell where
you took on roles as judges to decide on the Taco Bell vs. McDonald case; the visit to
King County Court to hear a live jury trial and also the meeting with Judge Mary Yu; the
visit to the Japanese Cultural and Community Center to meet with U.S. Representative
Bob Hasegawa, a staff from the Minidoka Pilgrimage, King 5 TV anchor Lori Matsukawa
and the artist Boss Hiko; the lecture about U.S.-Japan relations at the Japanese Consulate;
the visit to Nintendo; interviews with different companies and organizations; and the
visit to Boeing Factory, the largest building in the world. These are only some of the
valuable experiences to be learned and not to mention extra-curricular activities beyond
the classroom, such as the discussions about cultures, field trips and day-to-day life skills
gained through your homestays. We hope that your two-week experience in Seattle will
give you some guidance in reaching your educational and career aspirations.

SU ISC Site Instructor Markane Sipraseuth debriefed students after a presentation.
It was a pleasure to be a part of the 2011 Fukuoka University Business Law Program
at Seattle University. To work with Professor Weston and her students in the 11th
year of this excellent program was truly an honor. Professor Weston's experience and
preparation of her students was evident as they were eager and ready to learn about
American culture and business law every step of the way.
When I first taught the students they were very shy to speak. However, with smiles,
a positive attitude and a Yes, we can ! and Don't be shy ! motto they steadily
progressed. As time progressed they became more confident and comfortable using
English as they interviewed ferry passengers, asked challenging questions to guest
speakers while creating everlasting friendships with their host family and others. By the
end of the program the students had blossomed, impressing not only me but also my
colleagues by delivering outstanding presentations encompassing their experiences in
Seattle.
Overall, I believe the Fukuoka Business Law Program has been exceptional,
creating an irreplaceable kindle for students to embrace and comprehend international
understanding at a higher level. The program has provided an important step in not
only developing students international understanding but also has provided students
valuable motivation and confidence to become our next future leaders of tomorrow.
With great respect to Professor Weston and her class I look forward to their success in
the future. I wish them all the best of luck and may all their dreams come true. Girls

I thank Professor Weston for giving me the opportunity to meet the class of 2011.
I have been privileged to have been a part of the Fukuoka University Business Law
Program in Seattle from the beginning. I learned from all of you.
You were faced with English every minute of every day. You were tired. You were
frustrated at times, but you learned from these experiences.
You met unexpected challenges. You faced diversity challenges far beyond your
imagination. You found diversity of cultures, food and the good and the bad; both in
people and experiences. Maybe you did not like some of those differences, but you now
know that there are many ways of life.
Congratulations to this year's graduating class. Please plan a return trip to Seattle. I
will be happy to help all Fukuoka students plan their return travels.
I look forward to meeting many more Fukuoka University students in the future.

Program Abstract
法学部では、2001年度に、英語力を高めながら、日米の法政事情をよりよく理解するために、
「国際コミュニケーション・法政事情Ⅰ」
「国際コミュニケーション海外研修」
「国際コミュニケー
ション・法政事情Ⅱ」を開設しました。前期週 ２ 回「国際コミュニケーション・法政事情Ⅰ」を
開講し、夏休み中に、シアトル大学（2008年度まではワシントン大学）を中心としてアメリカ
で「国際コミュニケーション海外研修」を行い、後期週 ２ 回「国際コミュニケーション・法政
事情 ２ 」を開講します。これらの課程を終えると、選択必修科目として、10単位が認定されます。
「国際コミュニケーション・法政事情Ⅰ、Ⅱ」は、少人数で、ネイティブスピーカーの講師に
よる英語でのレクチャーを聞き、英語でディスカッションをしながら、日米間の法律・ビジネ
スの問題を中心として学習します。
「国際コミュニケーション海外研修」は、シアトル大学での講義や政府関連事務所、法律事務
所などで説明を受けます。また、各グループのプロジェクトテーマに関する関連企業、非政府

グループテーマ：IT社会におけるスポーツビジネス戦略と今後の課題
Group Topic: Sports Business Strategies and Future Challenges in an IT Society
■法制度・政策・社会
私たちは、裁判所では裁判官の話を聞き裁判を傍聴し、法律事務所でも話を聞き実際の訴訟
ケースに基づいてロールプレイをしました。また、いかに印象的なプレゼンテーションをする
かについて大学の先生から話を聞き、自分たちのホームステイ、企業訪問、そして訪れたシア
トルについてのプレゼンテーションを行いました。
裁判所で見聞したことはとても印象に残っています。ワシントン州では罪を犯した青少年の
更正プログラムがしっかりしていて、そのプログラムには教師、親、弁護士など様々な大人の
バックアップがあり、罪を犯した青少年を見守る形がしっかりしています。そのプログラムを
クリアすると前科もつかないというのでとても驚きました。また、青少年がちゃんと社会復帰
できる道も作られていて非常に良いと思いました。福岡は少年犯罪が多いので、このようなプ
ログラムがあれば、もっとしっかりと更生してまた罪を犯す事は少なくなるのではと思いまし
た。
裁判官の話を聞いてもうひとつ興味深かったのは、ワシントン州では重犯罪を ３ 回犯すと終
身刑という厳しい判決になるため、軽犯罪か重犯罪かを見極めるのはとても重要で難しい問題
だという事です。確かに、アメリカでは銃の所持が認められていて重犯罪の刑罰が重いのでしっ
かり見極めなければなりませんが、アメリカならではの難しい問題だと思いました、
また、レイン・パウエル法律事務所ではアメリカで実際に起こった裁判のロールプレイをし
ました。自分たちに有利になる意見や資料を探し裁判官を説得させる事が難しく、結果は実際
の裁判と同じ判決になってしまいましたが、意見を述べている時はそれぞれが上手く行くよう
に一生懸命で楽しかったです。
このような経験をして、日米間の相違についてさらに学ぶことへの興味が強くなりました。
■企業･事務所訪問
今回、私たち A グループのテーマは「情報化社会におけるスポーツ企業戦略と今後の課題」
です。私たちがこのテーマにした理由は、今日の情報化社会の中で、私たち A グループが興味
を持っているスポーツ企業がどのような経営戦略を行っているのかを知りたかったからで、全
米42州に約480店舗を誇る「 Dick's Sporting Goods 」というスポーツ用品店を訪れました。そ
こでアシスタントマネージャーの仕事をしているシェアナさんからお話しを聞くことができま
した。
ディックス・スポーツ用品店は、世界的に有名なスポーツメーカーから特定スポーツにだけ
力を入れているメーカーまで、あらゆるメーカーの商品を扱っています。また、ディックス独
自のブランドも扱っています。幅広い年齢層に合わせたスポーツグッズを提供しアメリカで高
い人気を誇っています。
ディックスは特に「カスタマーサービス」に力を入れており、
「来店してくれた客が今後毎日
のように来てくれる店」を目指しており、顧客サービスを幅広く提供しています。例を挙げれ
ば、来店舗に目的の商品がなかった場合は無料で取り寄せ発送を行うことができます。日本と
同様に、ディックスもポイントカードシステムを行っています。そして、オンラインショッピ
ングで買った商品も指定した店舗で受け取ることができます。また、チームサービスにも積極
的に力を入れており、プロ選手を招き講習会などを開いて、子供達にスポーツをする機会を提
供しています。フェイスブックやツイッターなどを利用し、ネット上でチームでチャットした
り情報交換したりするサービスも提供しています。
私たちが訪問して印象深かった点は、まず店内はかなり広くフロア毎にカテゴリー分けされ
ていたことです。そのため、すぐに目的の商品を見つけることができ、スムーズに買い物を楽
しむことができるようになっていました。何よりもカスタマーサービスに力を入れていること
には驚きました。顧客を大事にする思いがアメリカで人気を誇っている理由なのではないかと
考えます。
今回、ディックスを訪れ、知りたいことや経営の仕組みを学んで自分達の視野を広げること
ができました。将来、きっと私たちの糧になる充実した企業訪問でした。
■新たな挑戦
僕はこの海外研修に行くにあたり、下準備をして臨みました。それは TOEIC の講座受講と受
験、それに英会話教室にも通いました。自分の中の興奮と不安を解消するために行ったとも言
えるのですが、海外研修のためと思いながら行っていると、次第に楽しくなっていました。こ
れは両方とも週二回あり、大学の授業もあったので正直大変だと思うこともありましたが、日々
頑張って通っていました。私の新しい挑戦とは、日頃から練習してきた英語能力がしっかり通

じるか試してみることでした。
海外研修が始まってみると、毎日が充実したもので、かつ楽しい日々でした。平日は法律関
係の話を英語で聞いたり、ゲストスピーカーの話を聞いたり、家に帰るとホストファミリーと
の英語の生活で、毎日が英語漬けでした。その度に僕は質問をしていました。するとアメリカ
で過ごしていくにつれ、自分の英語能力が上がっていくことに少しずつ実感が湧いてきました。
アメリカに行って驚いたことは文化の違いです。自分はオーストラリア、シンガポール、マ
レーシア、韓国に行った事があり文化の違いを感じた事はあったのですが、アメリカが一番文
化の違いを感じました。例えば、人種の多様さです。これについて中学、高校で学んだ経験は
あったのですが、改めてアメリカに行ってみると、本当にいろんな人がいると感じました。自
分がホームステイした家もフィリピン系の家族でした。
もう一つ感じた文化の違いは、アメリカの人はとてもフレンドリーということです。アメリ
カにはダウンタウンと言う賑わった場所があるのですが、そこを歩いていると、知らない人か
ら「ハイ！」とよく話しかけられました。自分から話しかけても同様に笑顔で「ハイ！」と返っ
て来ます。これを福岡でやると、
「なんだろ？この人」ときっと思われます。また、拙い英語で
道やバスの乗り方を聞くと、同様に笑顔で教えてくれました。自分は学校の行き帰りはバスだっ
たのですが、方向音痴なのでバスを降りてから家までの道がわからなくなってしまいました。
しかし携帯も持っていなかったので知らない人に声をかけたら、すぐに携帯を貸してくれたの
でホストファミリーに迎えに来てもらい無事に帰ることができました。最後に、アメリカに行っ
て、人間的にも成長することが出来、とても充実した生活を送ることが出来ました。ここでの
経験を、英語だけでなく、いろいろな方面に生かして行きたいです。

As business law students, during the summer session, we listened to a presentation
by a Washington Superior Court judge, observed a jury trial and went to a law firm. It
was also impressive that we could listen to lectures by university professors and visit
companies.
During the judge's presentation, we learned about a special Diversion Program
carried out in Washington State for juvenile delinquents. Different members from
the community volunteer to serve on the Diversion Board to guide and protect these
delinquents so they can return back to society. If the juvenile delinquents enroll in
this program instead of going to court, they records will later be cleared. I was also
surprised to learn that in Washington State, there is a three strikes law. If a felony is
committed three times, the criminal could be given a life term sentence.
In addition, at Lane Powell Law Firm, it was fun to role play different actors in a
court case. Everyone did their best to make convincing arguments or final judgments
in the case. After reviewing materials on precedents, our mock judges came to the
same decision as the judges in the actual case of McDonald vs. Taco Bell.
Finally, we really had good experiences this summer. While I am an university
student, I want to visit many countries. I would also like to return to Seattle.

Our group topic is Sports Business, Strategies and Future Challenges in an IT Society.
Subsequently, we visited Dick's Sporting Goods which has 480 stores in 42 states.
There we interviewed Shannon Dougherty, one of the store managers.
Dick's Sporting Good is very popular in the U.S. They offer a wide range of famous
brand name goods as well as their own goods. One of Dick's Sporting Goods strong
points is its custom made service. The company offers a wide range of services. For
example, the Dick's Sporting Goods will search for goods its customers want if it is not
available at their store and ship it free. In addition, Dick's also like stores in Japan uses
a point card system. Finally, online shopping is available.
Dick's provides a special services for teams; offers lectures by professional athletes
and creates opportunities for children's sports. Also through Internet, Facebook and
Twitter, Dick's set up chatting space and hubs for information exchange.
I was impressed with the spacious layout of the store. Customers can enjoy
findng quickly the merchandise they want. After visiting Dick's Sporting Goods, our
perspectives about business management broadened. We were satisfied with what we
learned. We want to thank all of those who were involved in this company visit.
Finally, after returning to Fukuoka, we visited Super Sports XEBIO to talk to a
representative there about our topic.
New Challenges
On my own time prior to departure, I went to TOEIC training and English language
classes in order to relay my own anxieties. Before arriving in Seattle, my challenge
was to use my English everyday to build up my capacity. I found the overseas
experience fulfilling and fun. During the day, I listened in English to guest speakers
about legal topics. Then I went back to my homestay where I used my English to ask
questions. Without realizing it, I began to use English in everyday situations.
In America, I was surprised by the cultural differences and diversity even more than
on my visits to other countries such as Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Korea. Also
my homestay family was of Phillipino descent. I found Americans to be friendly,
especially, in downtown Seattle. Finally, through these fulfilling experiences, I grew
up personally. I want to maximize all aspects of these experiences from now on.

約 ２ 週間のシアトル研修で最も印象に残っていることは、
「シアトルの多様性」です。本当に
多くの人種がシアトルで暮らしており、バスやお店の中は英語ではない言語がたくさん聞こえ、
とても驚きました。街を歩いていると、日本語で話しかけてくる人々も多く、日本語がとても
上手な店員さんもいました。このような人達がいてくれたおかげで、英語がわからないときや
道に迷ったときなど、本当に助けられました。シアトルに行って気づいたことは、シアトルで
出会った人々は、英語だけではなく何ヶ国語も話せる人が多かったということです。
私は企業訪問でインターナショナルスクールに行ったのですが、そこでは １ 日の半分は日本
語とスペイン語で、もう半分は英語で授業を行っていました。メキシコと神戸に姉妹校がある
ため、学んだ日本語とスペイン語の練習に、その姉妹校の人達とネットを通して会話している
そうです。このように彼らは幼い頃から ３ ヶ国語を勉強しているため、試験で高い点数をとり、
大学に入る前に単位をとることができます。
企業訪問やシアトル研修を通して、私は英語力をもっと伸ばし、英語以外の言語もたくさん
学んで、何ヶ国語も話せるようになりたいと思いました。
■企業/事務所訪問
今回、John Stanford というインターナショナルスクールを訪問した。理由は、社会は情報
化や国際化している。情報を発信するのもパソコンというツールを使い、その技術は年々発達
している。また、グローバル化に伴い、その情報はインターネットで国内だけでなく世界に発
信できるものとなってきた。そんな傾向に、子供たちの情報処理能力はどうなっているのか。
年々発達しているこのような社会に、子供が大人になったときに対応することができるのか。
そう思った私達はこの国際化という観点からインターナショナルスクールを選び、その中でど
のような情報に関する知識を学んでいるのかを聞くため、この学校を訪問した。
この学校は幼稚園から始まり小学五年生までとなっている。学校のテーマ（目標）として「児
童すべての成績をあげる」、「日本語、スペイン語、英語の三か国語を学ぶ」、「アメリカの社会
的考え方を学ぶ」という ３ つの項目があり、授業プログラムとしては、日本語・スペイン語の
みで数学、理科を学び、英語で社会科を学んでいる。授業中は決められた言語しか使うことが
できないが、休み時間等は好きな言語で話すことができ、幼少からストレスを与えることなく、
３ か国語を学びながら勉強することができる。これを「イマージョンプログラム」と言う。
また、情報に関する授業としては、パソコンを各教室に一台ずつ置き、エクセル、パワーポ
イントなどを学ぶことができ、インターネットも使いやすい環境となっていた。セキュリティ
もしっかりと行っており、地区ごとにフィルタリングが施され、見張りをしている。しかし、
パワーポイントなどは児童が直接に家庭で勉強のために行うので、そういった授業はなく、生
徒自身が個人的に先生に聞くようになっている。
さらに、インターナショナルスクールなので、メキシコや日本の神戸ともスカイプを使い会
話をしたりしている。こういった活動も社会のグローバル化の一環だと感じた。残念ながら、
夏休み中で生徒には会えなかったが、この学校にいる子供たちはとても自立心が強く、情報の
知識を学ぶのも自ら聞きに行くという非常に積極的な姿勢で学んでいることがわかった。また、
そのような姿勢をつくるこの学校は尊敬するものがたくさんあり、この訪問で私たち自身が学
ぶ点が非常に多かった。帰国後の11月 ７ 日、福岡インターナショナル・スクールを訪れ、ダイ
アン・ルースウェイト校長に私たちのテーマに関し話を聞いた。今回のインタビューで終了と
いうわけではなく、ここで学んだことを活かしていくことで自分たちが社会に出た時、通用す
る人材になりたい。また、周りの人たちに還元していくことができればと思っている。
■新たな挑戦
今回のシアトル研修で、私は多くの刺激を受け成長することができたと感じました。まず １
つ目は、ホームステイです。私はこれまでに何度かアメリカを訪れる機会がありましたが、ホー
ムステイは人生で初めての体験でした。言葉や文化の違いなどの不安を抱きつつも、楽しみに
ホームステイ生活を迎えました。しかし、はじめは自分の想像とは違う生活に戸惑ったり、分
からないことだらけで、不安が募る毎日でした。正直、日本を恋しく思うこともありました。
でも、このままではこの研修への参加が無駄になると思い、何事にも積極的に取り組もうと考

えを改めました。ホームステイ先の家族との会話も、英語の失敗を恐れずに少しずつ話す努力
をしました。次第に分からなかったことも解決し、毎日本当に楽しく過ごしました。最後の夜
はとても寂しくなり涙が止まらなかったのは、ホストファミリーが本当の家族と同じように大
切な存在になったからだと思います。
２ つ目は、毎日のように裁判所や法律事務所、企業などを訪問して貴重な話を聞いたことで
す。自分たちで行く旅行などでは決して体験することのできない、本当に貴重な経験でした。
４ 月に勉強を始めたばかりで、まだ日本の法律ですらよく理解できていない私たちでしたが、
今ある知識の範囲で日本とアメリカの違いを学び、自分の意見をまとめるなど大変なことばか
りでした。しかし、大きく成長することができたと思います。将来の目標を見直すための良い
機会にもなりました。また、フェリーのインタビューではたくさんの素敵な出会いがありまし
た。英語に自信がなくても 伝えたい という気持ちと 理解しよう という気持ちがあれば通
じあえることに気づきました。東北大震災のこともあり、初めて会った私たちのことを心配し
てくれた方もたくさんいました。シアトルの人は本当に親切で、フレンドリーで、いつも笑顔
で話しかけてくれました。朝が早くて辛いときも、バスの運転手さんの笑顔を見るだけで、不
思議と １ 日頑張ろう！という気持ちになれました。Justin, Stella, Josie、３ 人の支援学生との
出会いは一生大切にしたいです。シアトルでの人との出会いは、かけがえのない宝物です。私
はこの研修で、多くのことを学びました。しかし、これに満足することなく次へ次へとステッ
プアップし、もっと視野を広げていきたいです。

What impressed me most about Seattle is its diversity. I was so surprised to see so
many different races living in the city, on the buses and in the stores. Often I would
hear other languages than English. As we walked around, there were many people who
spoke in Japanese. This really helped when I was lost or couldn't understand English.
Our company visit was to John Stanford International School. Students there take
classes half a day in either Spanish or Japanese. Also, John Stanford International School
has sister schools in Mexico and Kobe. The students at John Stanford International
School can use the languages they are learning via Skype with partners at their sister
schools. In this way, JSIS students can study 3 languages and even earn credits for
university studies.

Our group visited John Stanford International School because we are interested in
IT and internationalization trends in society. The computer has become a channel
to develop, transmit and disseminate information. Every year, IT is progressing
further along with globalization. The Internet is not just a domestic but also global
phenomenon. It is good think about how these trends are impacting on how children
are processing information. Also, we should also reflect on how these children as
adults be processing information in the future
Starting with John Stanford International School's kindergarten until the 5th grade
of elementary school, the main goals are to raise all the students grades; to foster
students learning of three languages ‒ English, Japanese and Spanish; and U.S. social
studies. Students learn mathematics and science in either Japanese or Spanish. Social
studies are in English. While class is being conducted in a second language, only that
language is used. During the break, the students can freely use the language they like.
Students can learn three languages without stress. This kind of learning approach is
called immersion.
Moreover, in each class, there is one computer per student. Students learn Excel
and power point. At the same time, John Stanford School enforces a filtering system
on the computers used by students. With sister schools in Mexico and Kobe, students
talk to their partners via Skype. This kind of activity is also one kind of globalization.
Unfortunately, due to summer vacation, we were not able to meet many students.
However, the ones who were there displayed a strong sense of independence and
a positive desire to learn. I respect this school for creating this kind of learning
atmosphere. I hope to maximize the many things we learned on this visit later on in
society. I would like to contribute in some way to communities.
After returning to Fukuoka, we visited the Fukuoka International School and spoke
to Principal Diane Lewthwaite about our topic.
New Challenges
Although I had travelled to the U.S. before, this was my first homestay experience.
Although before departure I was anxious about relating to a newlanguage and culture, I
was still looking forward to the experience. After arriving, at first, it was different from
what I imagined. I became confused and anxious because of the different lifestyles and
so many things I could not understand. I was homesick for Japan. However, I realized
to end this program with such a feeling would be a waste. So I was determined to
be positive in my approach. I gradually made an efforts to engage my host family in
conversation and use English without fear of making mistakes. I resolved what I could
not understand, while enjoying every day. On the last night, while feeling sad and
crying, I felt that my Seattle family had become as important as my family in Japan.
Secondly, every day, that we could listen to presentations at courts, law offices and
companies was an invaluable experience. After entering Fukuoka University with little
knowledge of Japanese law, we now learned about some differences between Japanese
and American law. Also, we can now express our opinions among other wonderful
experiences. All of this has greatly contributed to my personal development. This program
was an opportunity to readjust our goals.
Also on the ferry to Bainbridge, Washington, we met many nice people. I realized
that even if you do not have confidence you should speak up. And also if you try to
understand others English, the other side will meet you half way. So many people whom
we met for the first time expressed their concern regarding the disaster in Eastern Japan.
People in Seattle really are so kind, friendly and speak to you with a smile. Meeting
SU student assistants ‒ Justin, Stella and Josie ‒ is a memory I wish to cherish for life.
Meeting so many people in Seattle is an invaluable treasure.
Finally, I really want to thank Professor Weston for giving us this wonderful chance.
Through this program, I definitely grew up. However, I am not satisfied with just my
accomplishments over the summer, I must continue to progress, while expanding my
perspectives.

Group Topic: City Promotion and the Fashion Industry: Fashion Network Seattle- A Case Study
■司法制度・政策・社会 私達のグループは、FASHION NETWORK SEATTLE というシアトルの会社を訪問した。
この会社は、ファッションを通してシアトルを活性化させていくシティープロモーションを目
的としており、地元のデザイナーや写真家、モデルを育て上げることを目標としている。また、
バイヤーの役割も担っており、多くの会社と関わっていることが伺え、そのぶん契約も重要と
なるので、今回はアメリカの契約法に触れてみたい。
現在、アメリカには ２ つの重要な体系があり、ひとつは統一商事法典 (UCC) である。商法の
各主要項目に関する包括的商事法典で、契約法を検証する ２ つの機会を私達は得た。まず、シ
アトル大学のマーク・チネン法学教授による双方向的講義において、ある楽器販売に関する契
約上の問題点を討議し、この件について様々な法的側面からの分析を行った。また、訪米中だっ
た福岡大学法学部の蓑輪靖博教授もこの討議に加わった。次に、レイン・パウエル法律事務所
ではマクドナルド対タコベルの契約に関する訴訟例に基づき、弁護士、判事、検事のロールプ
レイを行った。この二つの経験を通じ、米国契約法の幾つかの点について効果的に学ぶことが
できたと思う。
■企業/事務所訪問
今回私たちＣグループが訪問した企業は、ファッションネットワークシアトルというファッ
ションを通してシアトルという都市を活性化させていこうというシティープロモーションを
コンセプトに活動している企業でした。インタビューに答えていただいたのはエレワラさんと
いうとてもおしゃれな方でした。インタビューを行った場所は、ベルビューというシアトル
に隣接する街にあるビルの最上階のレストランでした。このようなシチュエーションでインタ
ビューを行うのはとても緊張しました。私たちがファッションネットワークシアトルに質問
した内容は大きく分けて ３ つで、一つ目が日本とアメリカのファッションの相違点、二つ目が
ファッションによるシティープロモーションの重要性、そして三つ目がファッションネット
ワークシアトルについてでした。ファッションネットワークシアトルは、まだ実績がないスタ
イリスト、デザイナー、メイクアップアーティストなどをプロデュースすることで若い世代の
技術向上を目指し、シアトルという都市の活性化に取り組んでいる企業でした。私たちはこの
話を聞き、非常に良いことを行っている企業だと感じました。やはり若い世代の人間がこれか
ら力をつけていかなければ社会の活性化にはつながらないと思ったからです。同時に日本には
このような活動を行っている企業はないかと思い探してみると、福岡の商工会議所が同じよう
にシティープロモーションを行っていることがわかりました。日本に戻り、10月17日に福岡商
工会議所を訪れ、商工振興本部の高比良拓児経済部長と山崎ルミ子さんにもいろいろと話を聞
きました。ファッションネットワークシアトルのキーコンセプトの一つに Entertain がありま
した。私は個人的にここが素晴らしいと思いました。やはり何をするにも第三者の立場になっ
て仕事を行わなければいけないんだなと感じました。私の将来の目標が起業することなので今
回のエレワラさんおよび福岡商工会議所の話をこれからの自分に役立てていこうと思いました。
■新たな挑戦
私は、今回のシアトル海外研修プログラムで、かけがえのないとても貴重な時間を過ごしま
した。日本から出たことのない私にとって、昔から海外へ行きたいという気持ちはとても強く、
小さい頃からの夢のひとつでした。この研修に参加できると決まったとき、とても嬉しかった
のを今でも覚えています。そして ８ 月16日、シアトルに降り立ったとき、天気は湿気がなくカ
ラッとした晴天でした。バスで大学の寮へ行くときに、街のシンボルであるスペースニードル
というタワーや、SAFECO FIELD という野球ドームを見て、本当にシアトルに来たのだと実
感しました。シアトルの人達は、とても温かくフレンドリーで、道に迷ったとき、分からなく
て何回も尋ねても、笑顔で明るく親切に教えてくれました。
私にとって一番の挑戦となったのは、ホームステイでした。ホストファミリーと出会って間
もない頃は、少し緊張していました。自分自身の乏しい英語力で家族とコミュニケーションが
取れるのか、本当の家族みたいになれるのかなど少し考えてしまったからです。しかし、ホス
トファミリーは私が話し始めると耳を傾け、一生懸命聞いてくれました。このことがキッカケ
となり、自信が身につき積極的に話しかけるようになりました。そして、日が経つにつれ、だ

んだんと絆が強くなっていくのを実感しました。休日に連れていって貰ったショッピングモー
ル、ホストファミリーの友達の結婚式へ行ったこと、家族皆で映画鑑賞したこと、どれも楽し
い思い出になりました。日本に帰国する日、仕事へ行ったはずのホストマザーが一旦帰宅して
見送ってくれたときは、嬉しくて感動しました。私はホームステイを通して、家族の絆や文化
や考え方など、たくさんのことを学びました。今回のシアトル海外研修で、前よりも成長でき
たと感じられるし、もっと海外を訪れていろんなことを知りたいと思いました。この経験を活
かし新たな目標に向かって挑戦し続けたいです

Law, Policies and Society
Our group visited Fashion Network Seattle which promotes fashion for Seattle's
development. The network fosters designers, photographers and models. The network
also takes on the role of buyer and interacts with many companies. Along with these
transactions, contracts play an important role. Consequently, I would like to make
some points about U.S. contract law.
Common law and the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) both have a large impact on U.S.
contract. The UCC is a comprehensive set of laws on every major type of business law.
Moreover, our class had two opportunities to examine contract law. First, in our interactive
class with SU law professor Mark Chinen, we discussed a contract problem concerning the
sale of a musical instrument. We analyzed various legal aspects of this case. In addition,
FU law professor Yasuhiro Minowa also visited this class and participated in the analysis
of the case. Second, at Lane and Powell law firm, we role played lawyers, prosecutors and
judges in a contract case ‒ McDonald vs. Taco Bell. Through both experiences, we could
learn effectively about some aspects of U.S. contract law.

Group C visited Fashion Network Seattle, a private company, whose aims include the
promotion of fashion to revitalize Seattle. At FNS, we interviewed the very fashionable COO/
CMO Cynarah Ellewala. Actually, our interview was held in a restaurant on a top floor
of a high red building in Bellevue. We were interested in three areas ‒ the differences
between Japanese and American fashion, the importance of fashion for city promotion
and Fashion Network Seattle, the company.
This company manages stylists, designers, make-up artists who are still relatively
unknown and trains them for the future development of Seattle. We were impressed
with this company ' s emphasis on fostering young talent. Moreover, one of this
company's key concepts is entertainment. After visiting, Fashion Network Seattle,
I wondered if there was a similar entity in Fukuoka. I discovered that the Fukuoka
Chamber of Commerce is involved in the promotion of fashion for city development.
On October 17, 2011, our group interviewed General Manager Takuji Takahira and
Rumi Yamasaki, Business Promote Division at Fukuoka Chamber of Commerce about
our topic.
In the future, I would like to start up a company. Personally, I found what we
learned during our interviews very useful.
New Challenges
During this Seattle Program, more than I could ever imagine, I enjoyed invaluable
experiences. It was my dream since childhood to travel overseas. I remember that I
was so happy when I was selected to be a member of this program. After landing in
Seattle, I felt I really arrived after experiencing the fair dry weather and seeing so many
famous landmarks. The people of Seattle are so friendly and warm.
On so many occasions, local people kindly directed me with a smile when I lost my way.
My biggest challenge was my homestay. When I first met my homestay, I felt a little
tense because of my poor communication skills. Afterwards, I started to think of my
homestay as a real family. They earnestly made an effort to listen to me. This helped
me to have confidence and then I could speak up positively. As the days passed, I grew closer
to my homestay family. We made many pleasant memories together including shopping,
attending their friend's wedding and watching movies together.
On the day we were leaving Seattle, my host mother, who was supposed to be at work,
returned to see us off. This really made me happy. Through this experience, I learned
a lot about family ties and ways of thinking. Also, I grew up. From now, I want to go
overseas again and learn about many things.
I owe this wonderful experience first to Professor Weston as well as all those I met in
Seattle. I want to maximize this experience to move towards new goals and to continue
challenging myself.

■司法制度・政策・社会 シアトルはアメリカの中では比較的治安の良い街で、気候もよく、産業も盛んです。市内や
近隣の都市にはスターバックス第一号店をはじめ、ボーイング、マイクロソフト、任天堂など
数多くの大企業があります。私がシアトルにきて一番衝撃的だったのは、たくさんの人種が当
たり前のように一緒に過ごしていることです。私はホストファミリーの友達の結婚式に招待さ
れました。ホストファミリーは中国人でしたが、その友達は白人で、会場にはアフリカ系アメ
リカ人もいました。披露宴は日本よりもルーズで、みんなでダンスを踊り自由に解散していま
した。私はウエディングドレスを着て踊る花嫁に圧倒されました。この研修でわかったことは、
家でも靴を履いたままの家庭・脱ぐ家庭、洋食の家庭・米中心の家庭など、さまざまな家庭が
あることです。また、坂の多いダウンタウンでは、バスに無料で乗れるので高齢者や体の不自
由な人がたくさん利用していました。そして、アメリカ人のオープンマインドに触れることが
できたことは嬉しかったです。バスの中で話かけられるのは当たり前で、目が合っただけで微
笑んでくれる人もたくさんいました。アメリカの法制度以外に文化や生活なども肌で感じるこ
とができ毎日が新鮮でした。10代のうちにこのような貴重な体験ができて本当に良かったで
す。
■企業／事務所訪問
私達 D グループが「アジア系および太平洋島民の児童虐待と家庭内暴力 - 問題と対策」とい
うテーマを選んだのは、家庭内暴力や児童虐待が日本国内だけではなく世界中で懸念されてお
り、この問題の実態について詳しく調べ、特に日米間ではさまざまな面でどういった違いがあ
るのかを知りたいと思ったからです。
私達が訪問したアジア系及び太平洋島民セイフティ・センターでは、地域社会プログラムマ
ネージャーのエマ・カテイグさんから、たくさんの話を聞きました。例えば、アメリカと日本
の虐待の定義の違いについてです。アメリカでは日本で躾の一環と見なされる「叩く」行為は
虐待になります。12歳以下の子供は緊急事態に対応する能力がないため子供だけで留守番をさ
せてはいけないとか、車でスーパーやコンビニに行った時、数分で帰るからといって車に子供
を置きっぱなしにすることも虐待になります。日本ではそういった光景はよく見られるので、
これが虐待になると知り驚きました。また、この行為は動物に関しても同様で、動物虐待にな
るのです。このように、アメリカは児童虐待に対し非常に厳しい態度をとっていることが分か
りました。
二つ目としては、家庭内暴力の心理的な考えについてです。子供が幼い頃から親同士の家庭
内暴力を見たり経験したりすると暴力の考えが染み付き、大人になってからその考えを崩すの
は難しいそうです。したがって、大人になって子供の頃に受けた虐待を真似してしまう人も少
なくないようです。被害を受けた子供達は、最悪の場合は他の家族の家に移されます。アメリ
カで家庭内暴力や児童虐待が起きがちな家とは、例えば、親が麻薬を使っている、経済状況が
厳しいなどの家庭です。日本をはじめとするアジアでは、文化的伝統や誇りがまだ地域社会で
このような環境の子供たちを保護することができているのかも知れません。
私達が訪問した API セイフティ・センターでは、ここ20年間で家庭内暴力と児童虐待を認識
し始め、事務所に暴力の被害を受けたもっと多くの人が相談に来てほしいと考え、広報活動も
しています。また、近くである祭りなどの行事では、自分たちがどういう組織でどんな活動し
ているかを宣伝し、ワシントン警察、病院、弁護士にも知らせています。私はいつの日か、こ
のような組織の必要がなくなるように暴力が永遠になくなれば良いと願わずにはいられません
でした。帰国後の10月31日、テーマに関し福岡の状況を知るため、私たちはこども総合相談セ
ンターを訪問し、こども緊急支援係長の中川原敬子さんにお話を伺いました。
■新たな挑戦 DonT' be shy 、 Yes we can この ２ つの言葉が私を成長させた。シアトルで過ごした ３
週間は、見るもの感じるものすべてが新鮮で毎日が充実していた。特にシアトル大学の講義で
は、日本では得られない「積極性・自己主張・チャレンジ精神」を身につけることができた。
毎回の講義でネイティブの英語を聴きとり、発言する。間違ったことを言うかもしれない…発
音に自信がない…恥ずかしい…という気持ちは一切捨てた。少しでも思ったこと、気づいたこ

とは発言した。拙い英語でも良い。身振り手振りを使って一生懸命に伝えようとする気持ちが
あれば、きっと相手は理解してくれる。そう思えるようになったのも、シアトル大学での講義
を受けたおかげである。
また、ジャスティンとの出逢いは、かけがえのない思い出と言っても過言ではない。たった
３ 週間だったが、私たち18人とジャスティンの間に生まれた友情は計り知れなく大きい。ジャ
スティンと出逢えたことで「一期一会」を大切にしようと思うようになったし、多くの出逢い
の中で自分自身が成長していくのだと身をもって感じることができた。
今回のシアトル研修で学んだことは、日米の法の違いや、価値観、英語能力の上達だけでは
ない。精神的に成長できたし、なにより「国コミ」という仲間や両親、私に関わるすべての
人に対する感謝の気持ちや絆を改めて学ぶことができた。私は、国コミに入ってシアトルに行
き、ホームステイをして様々なことに挑戦した。しかし、私の挑戦はまだまだ終わらない。今
後の人生の中で悔いの残らぬように貪欲に様々なことにチャレンジしたい。私は成長し続ける。

Seattle, an important business center in the U.S., is a nice and relatively safe city. In
Seattle or nearby cities, you find the original Starbucks store, Boeing, Microsoft and
Nintendo. What was really surprising for me was to see so many diverse people living
in Seattle. On a different note, my host family, who were Chinese, invited me to a
friend's wedding. At the wedding party, there were many different nationalities. Also
everyone freely danced. Through this program, I learned that there are many kinds of
families with different lifestyles and food customs.
Also, downtown anyone could ride the buses free. I observed many elderly and
physically challenged people making use of these services.
I am happy that I could come in contact with Americans open-mindedness. Also, it
was very natural for people to talk to you on the bus. And if you made eye contact
with someone, you were often greeted with a smile. Finally, besides learning about
the U.S. legal system, it was fresh for me every day to experience culture and lifestyles.
It was good that we became one of the 11 generations to have this precious experience.

Our topic is Child Abuse and Domestic Violence among Asian Pacific Islanders:
Problems and Measures. We chose this topic because DV and child abuse is a growing
concern not only domestically but also worldwide. We were especially interested in
the various differences between the U.S. and Japan concerning these areas. Thus,
we decided to visited the Asian & Pacific Islander (API) Safety Center where we
interviewed Emma Catague, Community Organizing Program Manager.
We learned at the Center what Japan takes as a form of discipline which may involve
hitting a child would be considered to be a kind of abuse in the U.S. Another kind of
abuse, we learned, is leaving a child under 12 alone in the car while the parents goes
into the market or a convenience store. In Japan, as we often see this kind of scenario,
I was surprised to learn this was a kind of abuse. Also, leaving animals alone in a
vehicle is also an abuse. Through our discussions at the center, I realized that the U.S.
takes a very strict stance on child abuse.
Secondly, it is also difficult for children, who have witnessed DV between their parents,
to get rid of the psychological impact of seeing that when they themselves become adults.
Moreover, those children who were abused, may repeat the cycle. In the worst case scenario,
I was surprised to learn, children who are abused may be moved to another family.
In America, the types of families where abuse may occur often tend to be where there
is drug abuse or difficult economic situations. In Asia including Japan, it is not that
this does not occur but rather that cultural traditions and pride may lead to families to
cover up these kinds of situations.
Twenty years ago, API Safety Center starting addressing DV and child abuse
issues. API safety Center, hopes that the victims of abuse will come to the center for
consultations. Through various events, they are raising the consciousness of people
in the community about these problems. Also other entities in the community like the
police, hospitals and lawyers also publicize API's activities.
After returning to Fukuoka, we visited Fukuoka City Children Futures Bureau
General Children Consultation Center's Emergency Support Section and interviewed
Assistant Chief Keiko Nakahara on October 31, 2011 about our topic.
New Challenges
Two expressions I heard this summer were a catalyst for my personal development ‒
Don't be shy and Yes we can, What I experienced over approximately two weeks
in Seattle was all fresh and fulfilling. Especially at Seattle University, what I could not
gain in Japan, I received there ‒ positivity, self pride and a spirit to challenge many
things. After I listening to lectures in English, although I probably made mistakes, I
expressed my opinions.
Even if my English was poor, it was good to express myself. If you use gesture in an
effort to earnestly communicate, the person on the other side will try to understand. I
came to this way of thinking thanks to the lectures I heard in Seattle during this program.
It is not an exaggeration to say how important our group s friendship with Justin
over these two weeks. I felt this also contributed to my personal growth. Through this
program, we not only learned about Japan and U.S legal systems, but also values. We
also improved our English and I developed emotionally.
I want to thank all those involved with this FU Business Law practical training
program and my parents. I not only feel grateful but also learned again about the
meaning of strong ties.
After entering this program and going to Seattle including participating in a
homestay, I challenged many things. However, I still have more challenges to come.
From now, so there will be no regrets, I will take up many challenges. I will keep
developing personally. Yes, I can !

■司法制度・政策・社会 シアトルでは、多くの法律関係者や企業の方と実際に話す機会がありました。シアトル商工
会議所、裁判所をはじめとして、東レ元役員など、毎日違った方の話を聞く事ができました。
一つ一つの話で自分たちが持っていない考え方を聞く事ができ、日本との違いを講義の中から
も感じる事が出来ました。
個人的に一番自分のためになったのは、シアトル大学のビジネス関係のキム先生の講義です。
IT のグローバル化を軸に、これから自分たちに何を求められているか、また何を信条として学
び続けていくのが良いのかを講義してくれました。話の中で、日本など東アジアでは、間違い
を怖がり積極的に話さない人が多いのに対して、アメリカでは言わなければ伝わらないので話
さない事は評価されない。同じ時代、同じ人間でも地域が違うだけで、ここまで違うのかと改
めて感じました。また、「自分がやりたい事すべてに情熱を持つ事」が大事だと学びました。
シアトルの日本領事館で、外から見える日本というテーマでも講義をして頂きました。あま
り良いイメージを持っていなかった日本の官僚は外から見ると実は非常に優秀であること、聞
いた事もなかった JET プロジェクトのことなど、自分の日本に対する無知を感じました。外国
ばかりに目を付けず、まずは日本の事から知りたいと思いました。
グループ訪問では、PWA にお世話になりました。日本にも東北支援に来ていて、世界の人
が東北に関心を向けているという事に気づきました。
■企業･事務所訪問 私達 E グループのテーマは「災害救助の比較研究：事例研究‐ピースウィンズ・アメリカ」で、
ピースウィンズ・アメリカという災害支援の非営利団体を訪ねました。このテーマを選んだ理
由は、我が国では今年の ３ 月11日に東日本大震災が起こり、国内はもちろん、世界から沢山の
義援金や支援物資を頂きました。私達は、そのような支援をしている世界の団体について、資
金源や日本との関係などにとても興味を持ち、このテーマに決めました。この組織には日本に
もピースウィンズ・ジャパンという姉妹団体があり、世界の様々な災害の復興、支援に取り組
んでいます。このように姉妹団体を持っていることで、災害時に現地で様々な協力が出来ます。
この組織は、災害への備えと対応をするもので、主にアジア太平洋地域における自然災害の壊
滅的な影響を減らすことに焦点を当てています。自然災害への備えと対応に加え、政府、軍、
NGO、民間セクターとも関係を持ちながら活動しています。
私達は、CEO のチャールズ・アネンソンとスタッフのひとりにインタビューをし、新たな支
援における考えや政策を学びました。まず、特に民間セクターとの関係を重視し、ブランケッ
トや食料といった支援だけではなく、中小企業が早く復興するように食べ物を運ぶカートや道
具、そしてプレハブオフィスなどを支援物資として送っていることがわかりました。その理由
は、中小企業が早く立ち直る事で街自体の復興に繋がり、さらに人々の復興にも繋がるという
意図があります。やはり、支援といえば食料などの生活物資を想像していた私達にとって、企
業を支援するという考えは新たな知識となりました。印象深かった点としては、組織内に多く
の日本の物があり、シアトルの姉妹都市である神戸と協力して復興のためのチャリティー・イ
ベントにも参加するなどとても日本との関わりがあるという点でした。ピースウィンズ・アメ
リカは日本に向けて「 Don't give up あなたも助ける。あなたの友達も助ける」というメッセー
ジを送りました。そしてアメリカも日本の今回の震災から色々な事を学んだので、お互いこれ
からも協力し合っていきたいとのことです。私達は、この組織を訪れて、避けることの出来な
い自然災害を最小限に抑える備えをし、対応もしっかりとする凄さを実感しました。そして、
ここまで日本の事を考えてくれる事にとても感謝しなければならないし、これからも協力して
助け合っていかなければならないと思いました。帰国後の10月17日、日本赤十字社福岡県支部
に行き、災害救護担当の森勉さんにもお話を伺いました。
■新たな挑戦 19日間のシアトル海外研修を終えて、以前に増して海外への関心、国際理解が深まったと
感じる。研修前の前期の講義ではシアトルについて、また日本とアメリカの文化の違いについ
て学んだが、やはり現地に行くと講義の中で見たり聞いたりする内容をさらに理解することが
できた。例えば、講義の中ではアメリカ人のイメージについて意見を出すことがあったが、肌

は白や黒、ブロンドヘアーで青い目。このような外見の人をアメリカ人と思う学生が多く、私
もその一人であった。そのような外見の人々ばかりではないという教授の言葉もピンとはこな
かった。しかし、現地に行ってみると改めてアメリカは多人種国家であることが理解できた。
これが私の最初のカルチャーショックであった。毎日の通学で利用したバスの中でも、私たち
が思い描いていたアメリカ人ばかりではなく、私たちと同じようなアジア系の人々ばかりのと
きもあった。
初めてのホームステイで不安もあったが、ホストの家庭は親切で、食事やライフスタイルな
ど実際にアメリカの生活を体験できたことはとても嬉しく思う。日本語の通じない環境で、英
語でその日の出来事や生活の仕方について会話したことは語学力の向上にとても役に立ったと
思う。留学は中学時代からの夢だったので、このプログラムの一員になれたこと、そしてこの
プログラムを支援してくれたシアトル大学、様々な分野で私たちを手伝ってくれた教授や多く
の方々、そして親に感謝したいと思う。この経験を経験として終わらせることなく、19日間で
見つけた、語学力の乏しさ、国際理解、専門知識の足りなさをこれからの課題として次の機会
に生かしたい。

In Seattle, we had the opportunity to meet various people in legal and business
fields. For example, we visited and heard presentations everyday by speakers from the
Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle, courts and companies. Through these
experiences, we learned about different ways of thinking and could compare these ideas
with Japan.
SU Business School Professor Kim through his lecture gave me the best message for
my future. He asked us what do all of you seek in the globalized world of IT. He also
emphasized doing what you aim for with passion.
At the Japanese Consulate General in Seattle, Consul General Kiyokazu Ota spoke to
us about how Japan is viewed from the outside. Through his presentation, we learned
about the high level activities of our public servants.
Our group is indebted to Peace Winds America (NPO) where we carried out our
interview regarding our topic: Comparative Study of Disaster Relief: Peace Winds of
America- A Case Study. Peace Winds America representatives came to Japan after the
Eastern Japan Disaster and helped turn the eyes of the world on that area.

E group visited Peace Winds America (NGO) regarding our topic: Comparative Study
of Disaster Relief: Peace Winds America: A Case Study. Due to the disaster in Eastern
Japan, we selected this topic. Also Japan received support in terms of money and
donations in kind not only domestically but also from organizations worldwide. We
were especially interested in the sources of this support and relationships. After that
we selected Peace Winds America which is involved in disaster recovery and support
logistics. Moreover, this organization is engaged in these activities as well as disaster
preparedness principally in the Asia Pacific region with the aim to reduce the effects of
natural disasters. They carry out these activities along with governments, militaries,
NGOs and private sector entities.
We visited Peace Winds America and interviewed CEO Dr. Charles Aanenson and
one project officer about their new support approaches and policies regarding disaster
preparedness and recovery. This NPO concentrates on rebuilding the private sector after a
disaster not by sending blankets and foodstuffs but by the promotion of small and medium
companies redevelopment. Some of this is done by supplying food carts, furniture and pre
fab offices. Peace Winds America reasons that if these businesses quickly recover, this is also
linked to local communities disaster recovery. Before this interview, we primarily though of
disaster support as food etc., this focus on rebuilding the private sector was a new idea for us.
Peace Winds America also collaborated with Kobe, one of its sister cities to hold a charity
concert to raise donations.
At the end of the interview, Dr. Aanenson's message for Japan was Don't Give up.
As both America and Japan learned various things from this experience, we hope that
this kind of cooperation will continue. We learned that it is important to minimize the
importance of disasters through advance preparations. Also good follow up measures
for recovery are also needed. We would like to express our appreciation to all those
thinking of Japan. And from now on, we must cooperate with each other.
After returning to Fukuoka, we visited the Japan Red Cross Fukuoka Prefectural
Branch Disaster Rescue Protection Section and spoke to Tsutomu Mori, a staff member
to further explore our topic on October 17, 2011.

At the end of this overseas program, I felt more than before my international
understanding deepened. During the spring semester lectures and preparations, we
learned about some of the differences between Japan and U.S. However, after actually
going to Seattle, we were able to deepen our understanding further. We were also able
to express our opinions. For example, I, like others, thought Americans were either
white with blue eyes or African Americans. Being in Seattle, I saw how diverse people
were. Also, riding on the bus, I saw many Asians.
On another point, I was very happy to be able to experience an American lifestyle
during the summer. As my host family could not speak Japanese, I was able to develop
my English language skills. Studying overseas has been my dream since Jr. High
School. I want to express my appreciation to Seattle University and all those who
helped throughout in various areas as well as my parents. My challenge from now
is work on my lack of language abilities, international understanding and knowledge
through the next opportunity.

シアトルで強く心に残った出会いがあります。私が出会ったそのアメリカ人は、毎日同じカ
フェにいました。たまたま、私たちもそのカフェで休憩していてその男性と目が合い、話しか
けたのを覚えています。男性に「どこから来たのだい？」と聞かれたので日本から来ましたと
答えると、「そうか。俺たちアメリカ人は日本の方に謝らなければならない。本当に申し訳ない
ことをした。ごめんよ、ごめんよ…」 その男性は何度も何度も謝るので、なぜ私たちに謝るの
か聞いてみると今から約66年前、アメリカ軍が日本の広島、長崎に原子爆弾を投下し、多くの
命を奪ったことを今も自分の中で罪に思い謝りたいのだと言いました。それを聞いた私は感動
し、同時にこのアメリカ人の優しさ、そして原爆投下から今日まで自分を責めてきた苦しさを
感じ取ることができました。私の実家は広島で、小さい頃から原爆の話を聞かされてきたとそ
の男性に話すと、「お前の家族は大丈夫だったか？おじいちゃん、おばあちゃんは無事だった
か？」と心配してくれました。その瞬間、胸がいっぱいになったのを覚えています。日本の被
ばく者は年々減少しており、戦争の経験談を話す機会も減ってきています。それ以上にアメリ
カなどの海外で、このような体験談を聞くことができる機会はほとんどと言って良いほどあり
ません。そんな中で、このように戦争の重さや恐ろしさについてアメリカの人と語り合うこと
ができたのは、かけがえのない出会いであり、自分の中では一番大事にしたい瞬間でもありま
す。
今後、被ばくや戦争の経験、恐ろしさ、罪深さを伝えていくのは、私たちの世代です。そし
て被ばく体験は、日本国内だけでなく、世界に伝えなければならない出来事だと考えています。
世界にはまだまだ原爆、核戦争の恐ろしさを知らない人がたくさんいるので、日本が率先して
このことを世界に伝えていくべきです。
■企業/事務所訪問
現在シアトルには約8000人のホームレスがいて、その内約3000人が外で暮らしており、約
5000人はホームレスシェルターで生活をしているという。そこで私たちはアメリカにおける大
きな社会問題であるホームレス問題に興味をもち、NPO 団体が経営するレストラン「フェアス
タート」を訪問し、コーディネーターであるエリカ・バン・メラーさんにインタビューを行った。
1987年、シェフであり起業家でもあるデイビッド・リーが、シアトルのホームレスシェルター
に食事を提供するビジネスを始めたことがきっかけで、1992年に NPO 団体フェアスタートの
運営が開始された。ここは元ホームレスや恵まれない立場の人々にフード・サービス業界で働
く機会を与え、自立を促すというミッションの下で運営されている。彼らに物質的な援助では
なく、社会的自立に必要なスキルを学んでもらうため、レストランではさまざまなトレーニン
グが提供されている。毎週行われるオリエンテーションに参加すれば、16週間の調理とカスタ
マーサービスのトレーニングを受ける訓練生になることができる。その間、生徒たちはホーム
レスシェルターに住み、交通・保険など生活に必要なものは全てサポートされる。最初の １ ヶ
月は調理の実践トレーニングを受け、２ ヶ月目はレストラン運営のサポート、３ ヶ月目はケー
タリングなどを担当し、最後の １ カ月で初めてレストラン内の調理場に立てるようになる。基
本的に誰でもトレーニングを受けることは可能であるが、修了するのは容易ではない。毎週テ
ストが行われ、それに合格しなければ次のステップに進むことはできない。ある訓練生は修了
まで31週間かかったそうだ。４ ヶ月内で訓練生の90% が修了し、そのうち80％が就職している。
毎週木曜日の夜にはシアトルの有名なシェフと訓練生たちが一緒に作った料理をリーズナブ
ルな価格で提供している Guest-Chef-Night というユニークなイベントも行われており、い
つも予約が殺到しているそうだ。ここで訓練生たちは一流シェフから調理のスキルを学ぶこと
ができる。
私が強く印象を受けたのは、店内に入って一番初めに目に入った壁に飾られている多くのプ
レートだった。フェアスタートは補助金だけでなく、多くの企業や個人からも援助を受けてい
る。プレートには同団体に協賛する企業のロゴなどが描かれており、その中にはマイクロソフ
トやボーイング、バンクオブアメリカ、スターバックスなどシアトルの有名企業のプレートが
並んでいた。これらの企業は食品や建物などを寄付するだけでなく、トレーニングを終えた人
を雇ったりもしている。また、このレストランで出てくるコーヒーはスターバックスから提供
されたコーヒー豆を使用したものであり、食材もシアトルの大手スーパーが提供している。

このトレーニングを通して彼らは調理のスキルを習得するだけでなく、自立のための勉強も
するので社会との繋がりを持つことができるようになり、新たな人生を始めることができる。
フェアスタートのようなコミュニティビジネスを行う団体が増えることで、地域が一つと
なってホームレス問題などの社会問題を解決できるのではないだろうか。帰国後の10月17日、
私たちは福岡市保健福祉局総務部保護課を訪れ、援護支援担当の矢野英亜さんに福岡市のホー
ムレス対策について話を聞いた。また、市のホームレス・シェルターにも行き、施設長の安達
さんにもいろいろと話を聞くことができた。
■新たな挑戦
私は、今回シアトル留学で多くのことを学びました。一番印象に残ったことは、アメリカ人
と、日本人の違いです。例えば討論をするとき、アメリカ人は自分の意見を的確に相手に主張
します。反対に日本人は自分の意見を心に留めたまま主張しようとしません。このようなアメ
リカ人と日本人の性格の違いに大いに興味を持ち、今回レポートにまとめようと思いました。
私達はシアトルで多くの企業訪問、講義、プレゼンテーションなどを体験しました。これら
の体験を積み重ねていくうちに、アメリカ人の積極性について考えさせられるようになりまし
た。基本的に私たち日本人は講義を受ける時は受け身の姿勢をとりますが、アメリカでは積極
的、且つ攻撃的に授業を受けます。このような違いが日本とアメリカの差だと思います。自分
の意見を的確に主張できるアメリカ人は何をするにしても成功の糸口が見つかると思います。
だから私たち日本人はアメリカの積極性を見習い、良い所を吸収していく必要があると私は思
います。今回のシアトル留学で、この事を見つけられたのは自分のプラスになったと思います。
これらの体験をこれからの私の人生に活かして、たくさんのことを学んでいきたいと思います。

During my overseas study, there is one most unforgettable experience for me. In a
café we visited daily, we happened to meet one American man. He asked us where we
were from. We said Japan. Then he said, we Americans must apologize to Japanese.
Americans did something bad. I am so sorry.
He apologized over and over. When we asked why. He said approximately 66 years
ago, the U.S. military dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and many people lost
their lives. He said he still feels guilty about this and wants to apologize. After hearing
this, I felt very emotional. I also realized at the same time, the gentleness of Americans
and the suffering they felt because of these past actions. As my family is from Hiroshima,
I have heard about the bombings. When I told him where I was from, he asked about the
welfare of my family during that time. His concern filled me with so many emotions.
The number of remaining Japanese bombing victims is diminishing yearly. And the
opportunities for them to talk about their experiences are also decreasing. It was best
experience for me to talk with this American about the terribleness and the seriousness of
the war. Now it is our generation's time to talk domestically and worldwide about the
experiences of the bombing victims, the war's terribleness and the guilt that still remains.
Japan has to take the lead in telling the world about these experiences.

In Seattle, presently, there are 8,000 homeless. Although the majority of these live in
shelters, 3,000 of them do not. Consequently, we had an interest in homeless people.
In line with this concern, we visited FareStart (NPO) and interviewed Community
Engagement Coordinator Erika Van Meer about our topic ‒ Training Programs for the
Social Reintegration o the Homeless: FareStart- A Case Study.
In 1987, David Lee, an entrepreneur, started the business of delivering food to shelters.
This became the starting point for FareStart which was established in 1992. Farestart
gave the homeless a chance to work in the food service industry, while fostering each
person's independence. Participants in FareStart do not receive actual salaries but are
taught various skills to function in society.
During a 16 weeks training program, participants learn cooking and customer service.
Participants live in shelters while they are in the program. They are given support
for transportation, health and living. The training is divided into 4 parts ‒ 1)practical
cooking skills; 2) restaurant operations support; 3) catering and 4) food preparation in
the kitchen in the FareStart restaurant. Once a homeless person enters the program,
graduating is not so simple. Every week, a test is held. If the student passes, he or she
can move on to the next step. 90% of the participants complete the training within 3
months. And 80% of these graduates later find jobs.
Every Thursday at FareStart's Restaurant, it is Guest Chief night. The guest chief
along with the students prepares the evening meal which is offered to guests at a
reasonable price. As you enter FareStart's building, there are plates on the wall with
the name of donors from companies, associations etc. including Microsoft, Boeing,
Starbucks and Bank of America. Donations include foodstuffs, equipment and money.
Some donors later employ graduates.
Participants in FareStart ' s program not only learn cooking skills but also
independence. They are given a fresh start on life. If more organizations like Farestart
stimulate community business, this will ameliorate the homeless problem.
To follow up on our organization visit in Seattle, we visited on October 17, 2011
Fukuoka City's Welfare Protection Bureau General Protection Support Division and a
homeless shelter in the city. We spoke to Mr. Fusatsugu Yano, head of the Protection
Support Division, and Mr. Adachi, head of the shelter.
New Challenges
Through this Seattle program, I learned so many things. One of my lasting
impressions is the differences between Americans and Japanese. For example, when
there is an argument, Americans express their own opinions. Alternatively, Japanese
keep their opinions to themselves. With great interest in this cultural difference, I
decided to write the following report. In Seattle, we experienced many company
visits, lectures and presentations. These experiences made me think about the positive
character of Americans. When Japanese listen to lectures, they tend to be very passive.
Americans, on the other hand, listen proactively. I think Americans' capacity to do
so is linked to successfully achieving something later on. Thus, I think Japanese
people have to learn from and absorb the good aspects of this positivity. Personally,
this overseas program has been a plus for me. From now on, I wish to maximize this
experience and continue to learn many things.

私は2010年10月から10カ月間、クウェート政府奨学生として留学していました。クウェート
大学では世界各国からの留学生約80名と共にアラビア語の勉強に励みました。クウェート大学
は総合大学で、私はランゲージ・センターの授業だけでなく、文学部、経済学部、社会福祉学
部、政治学部、法学部の授業を聴講していました。経済学部は英語でしたが、他学部はほとん
どアラビア語で進められました。さらに学外でのセミナーも積極的に参加しました。クウェー
トに住む西洋人向けの講座で、「ムスリムの女性は弾圧されているのか」「アラブ世界と欧米の
認識の違い」等、興味深いものばかりで大変勉強になりました。生活を通して感じるのは、ア
ラブ人は懸命に ９・11テロによって始まった国際社会とイスラム社会の誤解の溝を埋めようと、
歩み寄る努力をしていることです。確かにアプローチの仕方は不器用にも見えますが、国際社
会はもっとアラブに正面から向き合うべきであると思います。また、留学中は勉学だけではな
く実に多くのチャンスに恵まれました。
まず2010年はイギリスから独立50周年、湾岸戦争によりイラク軍の占領から解放され20周年、
日本とクウェートの国交樹立50周年、そしてアラブ革命という印象深い年に幸運にも留学でき
たことです。クウェートでは多くのイベントが用意され、国全体が盛り上がっていました。そ
して日本とクウェートが国交50周年を祝い共催イベントも続々と始まっていました。国家間の
イベントだけでなく、学生同士でもサークルを立ち上げ何度もクウェート大学内でイベントを
催しました。クウェート政府が全面支援してくれたので、それは伸び伸びと、クウェート人ら
しく豪華に取り行いました。ちなみに予算は無限大です。イベントは回を増す度にレベルの高
いものになっていき、同じ釜の飯を食べて過ごしたチームメイトと厚い信頼関係が構築されま
した。
その後、東日本大震災が起こりました。予定されていた日ク国交50周年記念セレモニーは全
て自粛され、お祭りモードは一転しました。その時、苦しんでいる被災者の方々に何も出来な
い自分に居てもたってもいられず、NPO や上記のサークル仲間と協力してチャリティーイベン
トを開催しました。共に各国の大使館やクウェートの主要省庁を駆けずりまわって活動したこ
とは良い思い出です。また、日本ではあまり報道されていないのでご存じない方も多いと思い
ますが、クウェートは震災直後、日本に石油を500万バレル寄付してくれました。遠く離れた地
から応援してくれる心強い友人がいることを、どうか頭の片隅にでも置いて下さい。
最後になりましたが、クウェート留学は私にとってかなり思い切った決断でした。しかし現
在、それは最良の選択だったと断言します。中東・アラブ諸国＝テロリスト、危険地帯、イス
ラム教、戦争カメラマン、黒い布をまとった女性程度のマイナス情報しかなく、偏見だらけで
飛び込んだからこそ、本当に有意義な留学生活を送ることが出来ました。当たり前の事ですが、
「外国」＝「欧米」「先進国」だけではない事をしっかりと認識しました。世界は広いです。多
様な地域、言語、文化があります。そのどれが良いとか悪いとかではなく、まず互いの文化を
受けとめ、そして歩み寄っていくことが大切であるということを意識した10カ月間でした。
また正直に言うと、留学前の私は自分のアイデンティティに自信がありませんでした。語学
が弱い、優柔不断、すぐに集団で固まろうとする、個を尊重しない、新しいものを受け入れな
いなど、日本人の弱い面ばかりを見ており、私は西洋人を目指して努力していたように思いま
す。しかし今は違います。クウェートで生活することによって、日本がいかに誇り高い国であ
るかを教わりました。社会に出て、「私個人で何ができるか」ではなく、「一日本人として何が
できるか」を考え、自分の経験を還元していきたいと思います。 クウェートで過ごした時間
は私の一生の宝物です。その礎を造って下さったのは、ウエストン先生とシアトル研修でした。
このきっかけがなければ、私は海外に行くことすらなかったと思います。多くの方に将来への
大きなステップとして参加し、一人でも多くの方が研修後、様々な地域に飛び込んで、メディ
アに振り回されずに自分の体で異文化にぶつかって頂ければと思います。もし迷っている方が
いるなら、勇気を出して一歩を踏み出して下さい。想像もつかないような宝物が待っているか
もしれません。

治安田生命で一生懸命頑張りたいと思います。

2009-2010 Asia Pacific Relations Training Class (New Zealand/Australia)
海外研修へ行く前は、異言語、異文化の地
で上手くやっていけるのか不安で仕方があり
ませんでした。しかし研修を終えて自分にも
自信がつき、人間的に成長出来たと感じる事が
出来ました。これもウェストン先生と、仲間
のお陰だと思います。私はこのゼミで、一生
心に残る貴重な経験をする事が出来ました！

私は卒業後、医療機関への就職を希望し、現
在、就職活動中です。就職活動では、自分の将
来について考える機会がたくさんありますが、
私はウエストン先生や他のメンバーとの海外
研修のおかげで、人を笑顔にし、社会の役に立
ちたいという自分の夢に気付くことができま
した。素敵な社会人になれるよう頑張ります。

大学生として過ごした ４ 年間を思い返すと
沢山の事があり、サークルや、ゼミ、海外研
修を始めとし、多くの経験をしました。どれ
も 私 に と っ て 誇 り で あ り、 糧 と な っ て い ま
す。就職活動も無事に終えましたが、決して
楽なものではなく、一時期中断していたこと
もありました。しかし、何においても諦める
ことなく最後まで続けることができたのは、
前向きに物事を考え、全てを楽しもうとして
き た か ら だ と 思 い ま す。 こ れ か ら 社 会 人 に
なり、きっと今まで以上の壁にぶつかり、挫
けそうになることもあると思いますが、キラ

卒業後、メーカーの事務職として働くことが
決まりました。大学 ４ 年間を振り返ると、この
研修での出来事が今の自分の自信になってい
ると強く感じます。思い切ってチャレンジする
ことが自己の成長へつながるということを学

んだことを存分に生かしたいと思っています。

私は大学卒業後、広告代理店の営業として
働きます。就職活動は長引くほどに不安や自
信喪失に陥りやすく、私自身も何度も心が折
れかけました。ですが、大学生活の楽しかっ
た 思 い 出、 充 実 し た 経 験 を 思 い 出 し て 自 分
を 勇 気 づ け て い ま し た。 研 修 に 参 加 し た
皆 さ ん も、 各 々 に 素 敵 な 思 い 出 が で き た と

３ 週 間 の NZ/AUS 研 修 で し た が、 普 段 の
学 生 生 活 では 得 るこ と が 難し い 貴重 な 経 験
と 知 識 の 習 得 を 多 く で き ま し た。 ま た、 一
緒に研修に参加した仲間やホストファミ
リーとの １ 日 １ 日は楽しい思い出ばかりで
し た。 こ の 研 修 で、 ま ず 挑 戦 し て み よ う と
す る 気 持 ち を 学 べ た こ と が 一 番 大 き く、 こ
の気持ちはこれから先もとても大切にな
る と 思 い ま す。 こ の 気 持 ち を 忘 れ ず に
何 事 に も 取 り 組 ん で い き た い と 思 い ま す。
私 は 最 初、 研 修 に 軽 い ノ リ で 参 加 し ま し
た。 し か し、 実 際 に 行 く こ と で 多 く の 刺 激
を 受 け、 視 野 が 広 が り、 自 分 自 身 成 長 で き
た と 感 じ て い ま す。 最 初 は ノ リ で も 思 い
つ き で も 何 で も 良 い の で、 や っ て み よ う
と思ったことを行動に移すことが大切だ
と、研修に参加した自分の経験から学びまし

保 険 会 社 で す。 こ の 会 社 は、 皆 さ ん に 馴 染
み 深 い 車 や 家 な ど の「 物 」 を 対 象 と す る 保
険 を 扱 い ま す。 ま だ 勤 務 地 な ど は 決 ま っ
て い ま せ ん が、 可 能 で あ れ ば 福 岡 に 戻 っ

会長として、先輩の後について行くだ
けで精一杯だった私も今では最高学年に
なりました。女性プレジデント二人目と
いう妙なプレッシャーもあった気がしま
す ( 笑 ) この研修を通して今まで見たこと
のなかったメンバーの一面を知り、尊敬できる先輩や可愛い後
輩に出会うことができ、幸せ一杯な４年間でした。負けず嫌い
なところがあるので会長というポジションにいながらも、海外
に行けば自分より英語ができる子、発言できる子、現地の人と
コミュニケーションをとれる子がいて正直劣等感を感じるこ
とがありました。今だから言えることです ( 笑 ) それでも結
局「あー良い研修だった」と思えたのは、メンバーの人柄に恵
まれていたからです。 I am youth and joy. I'm a little bird
fresh from the egg. 「僕は、若さと喜びのかたまりだ。かえっ
たばかりのヒヨっ子なのさ」私の大好きなセリフです。私たち
は卒業しても22、23歳で、この先にあるいろんなことにチャレ
ンジできる可能性を秘めています。チャレンジする最初のス
テップ、個人の活躍のフィールドを見出すことに繋がったキッ
カケがこの海外研修だったのではないでしょうか。ウエストン
先生や研修関連スタッフのみなさん、両親、ホームステイファ
ミリー、たくさんの人に感謝の気持ちで一杯です。ありがとう
ございます。そして、国際コミュニケーションがさらにパワー
アップすることを期待しています☆

早いものでシアトル研修から １ 年が経
ちました。シアトルでの研修は、シアト
ル大学スタッフの方々、ホストファミリー
の方のおかげで有意義な時間を過ごすこ
とができました。シアトルでは、裁判所
や貿易センターを訪れたり、英語で授業を受けたりと初めての
経験ばかりでした。その中で私たちは英語力、コミュニケー
ションの大切さ、シアトルと日本の関わり、法律について考え、
学び大きく成長できました。この研修を終えてから、私たちは
TOEIC のスコアを伸ばし、国際交流やボランティア、ホスト
ファミリーを経験し、さらにグローバルな人間を目指していま
す。これからもこの18人でお互いに切磋琢磨し合い、自分たち
の夢を叶えるために努力していきます！

この挨拶を考えるときにいつも
思います。今年もまたこの季節が
来たのだな、また一年経ったのだ
なと。あの衝撃と感動の18日間からはや２年が経とうとしてい
ます。
「あれから自分たちは何か成長できたのだろうか」と自
問自答の日々が続いていますが、国コミでの経験、出会いが、
いま私たち18人がそれぞれ歩んでいる道の基盤になっているこ
とは間違いありません。そしてそれが留学、海外研修、資格習
得など、さまざまな面で行動や結果として表れているのも確か
です。１年の時からこのような貴重な経験ができた私たちはと
ても幸せ者だと思うし、この国コミの扉を自ら開けたことに誰
も後悔はしていません。これから就職活動も本格化しますが、
私たちにはシアトルで多くのことを学んだ経験とシアトルで得
た新たな価値観と仲間とのつながりという大きな財産がありま
す。この財産を胸に今度は社会人もしくは夢への扉を自ら開い
ていきたいと思っています。このプログラムを企画していただ
いた福岡大学をはじめ、１年の時から今も変わらず私たちを優
しく見守って下さるウエストン教授には本当に感謝していま
す。ありがとうございました。

今回、このプログラムにプレジデントという代表の立場で
参加でき、とても良かったと思います。シアトルでは講義や
研修の後には必ず英語で御礼を言う時間があるため、他のメ
ンバー以上に集中して話を聞かなければならず、また、メン
バーの態度が良くなければ自分が注意を受けたりと嫌な事も
ありました。しかし、それ以上に得る物が多かったのも事実
です。やはり現地の方と話す機会が多く、英語を使う事が多
かったというのが一番自分のためになりました。また、メン
バーとの仲も非常に良くなり、この国際コミのメンバー全員
が一生付き合っていける友人だと言えます。こんな体験を一
年から出来たことをありがたく思い、色々な方に感謝してい
ます。この体験は、言葉で説明するより皆に実際に体験して
貰いたいです。今までの自分を小さく感じ、もっと広く世界
を見たいと思いました。来年度も参加したいと考えています。

the Seattle Club workshops at Solange Resort).
Kunitomo has also helped to organize past field
trips taken by Seattle Club members.
2007-2008 Asia Pacific Relations Training Program
(NZ & AUS) member Shota Oishi spoke about his
work on June 19, 2011 to participating students as
a sales representative at a medical equipment company during the Seattle Club workshops at Solange
Resort.
Students visited the lovely Yusentei near Fukuoka
University campus. The yusentei s director spoke
about the history of the Japanese gardens there.

Seattle Club Activities
Last December 2010, Professor Weston gathered
Seattle Class Presidents past and present together
at a local restaurant to give them thanks for
their cooperation during the 10th Business Law
Anniversary celebration held November 20, 2010.
After the 2011 Seattle Class returned from their
overseas business law studies at Seattle University,
we celebrated on September 15 , 2011 at the
Lighthouse restaurant, Bayside place. Students
enjoyed the dinner and a wonderful magic show.
On November 17, 2011, students joined in the 旅
立ち会 for the 2008 Seattle Class and the 2009-2010
Asia Pacific Relations Training Class seniors at
Hotel Monterrey LaSeour Fukuoka.
This year the Seattle Club enjoyed Ohanami
in Nishikoen March 30, 2011. We then welcomed
the 2011 Seattle Class on April 25, 2011 at Sancho
Panza, Tiempo Iberoamericano.
On June 18-19, 2011, the 2011 Seattle Class along
with OB members stayed overnight at the Spa
and Resort Solange in Oita Prefecture. The guest
speaker was Shu-Lin Augustine who spoked to
students about Japanese cinema masters and their
respective cinematic styles. Also 2002 Seattle Class
OB Kazutaka Kunitomo, travel agent at Nihon
Ryookoo, arranged this year's tour to Oita as well
as spoke about his work to participants. And Syota
Oishi, 2007-2008 Asia Pacific Relations Training
Program OB spoke as well about his work as a
salesman for a medical equipment company.

今年、福岡大学シアトルプログラムは文部科学省から国際
交流促進の特別助成金を得た。これまでに198名の学生が参
加した11年目となるこの実践的な経営法学科特別研修プログ
ラムを認めて頂いたと喜んでいる。この教育イニシアティブ
を日米の架け橋とした講義やプレゼンテーションをしてくれ
た方々を始めとした協力を頂いた皆さんのお陰だと思う。
前期では夏期研修の準備に加え、米国の多様性についてフア
ン・アベシーヤ米国領事の特別講義を聞いた。福岡アメリカン
センター・レファレンス資料室長および図書館員、カグノ麻衣
子が色々な資料やその資料の調べ方を学生の発表のために教え
ました。また、アメリカ文化センターで研修をした安陪麻由可
さんが自身の留学経験について話をした。さらに、学生達は海
外に出る前に自分達の文化についても学ぼうと典型的日本庭園
である友泉亭を訪ねた。
今年の参加学生が学んだことを次のレベルにつなげるこ
とを願っている。分析する力を伸ばし、人生は開かれるの
を待っている扉の連続であることを認識して欲しい。最後
に、2012年 ３ 月に卒業予定の2008年度シアトルクラスおよ
び2009-2010年 NZ/AUS クラスの学生達が社会に出て新しい
チャレンジに臨むにあたっての健闘を祈っている。

This year the Fukuoka University program at Seattle
University was given a special grant to foster international
exchange by the Ministry of Education, Science and
Technology. It was wonderful recognition of this special
practical business law training program now in its 11th year
with 198 students who have now participated.
It is also a celebration of all the partnerships and
contributing lecturers/presenters who make this education
initiative a create bridge between the U.S. and Japan.
During the spring semester, in addition to their regular
preparatory classes, students also listened to a special presentation
by U.S. Consul Juan Avecilla on diversity in America. Also,
Fukuoka American Center Reference Facility Head/Librarian
Maiko O, Cagno spoke to students regarding how to use different
resources for their presentation. In addition, Maiyuka Abe, who
interned at the American Center in Fukuoka, also spoke to
students about her study overseas experience. And students
visited Yusentei, a typical Japanese garden to learn something
about their own culture before travelling overseas.
I hope that this year's participants take what they learn to
the next level; increase their analytical skills and realize that
life is a series of doors, waiting to be opened. Finally,
I wish the 2008 Seattle Class as well as the 2009-2010 NZ/
AUS Class students who will graduate in March of 2012 all the
success as they move on to their next challenges in society.
