The Principal’s Address
Happy New Year! 2010 finished
off with a flurry of activity. We
had a very successful Christmas
Fiesta with charity drives, music
performances, plays, art shows
and many games and other activities. The Fiesta is a great way to
get the whole school together to
celebrate our many successes.
Thank you to all the parents,
teachers, staff and students who
worked extra hard to make this
event so successful.
Welcome back to all the student,
parents, teachers and staff to
school after what I hope was an
enjoyable winter holiday. 2011
looks to be another exciting year
at Columbia International School.
I would like to thank all of you
for your past support and cooperation and encourage everyone
to get involved in many of the
programs and initiatives we have
going on this year. We start the
year with a PTSA sponsored
Rakugo performance in English.
We will have 15 visiting students
from Korea spending 10 days in
January with us on a cultural
exchange. The school wide ski
trip will take place later in February.
We look forward to the visit in
March by the Western Association
of Schools and Colleges as we continue to become one of the premier
international schools in Japan. And
after the Spring break we will have
our annual Ontario, Ministry school
inspection and the teachers are
excited about showing the inspector many of our leading edge programs. Later in April we will have a
2 week cultural exchange visit from
students from Lertlah International
School in Thailand and our students
will have the opportunity for a return visit in July.
With these and many more activities in front of us I once again
encourage students to take advantage of the many activities
available to them and get involved
in all aspects of the school. Classes
are in full swing as are the extracurricular and club activities. Midterm evaluations for the winter
trimester will soon be upon us and
students should start their preparations early. Graduating students
should be well on their way to
submitting their university applications.
Through the efforts of all the
teachers and staff and the hard
work and cooperation of parents
and all of our great students 2011
is shaping up to be another great
year at Columbia.

Looking at the New Term
It has been only two weeks since the winter term
started on December 6th, however elementary students have already had many excited events such as
“Christmas Fiesta”, “Secret Santa”, “ G3 excursion
to Ainu Center and Science Museum”, “G1 Mochi
Party”, and “Award Ceremony 2010” (whew…)!
The theme of this term is “working on language”. As
we continuously run full out to brush up reading,
writing, and communication skills we will have more
activities, “Rakugo” in English a PTSA sponsored
event, the “Spelling Bee” and “The Reading Challenge” in the near future, too!!
Daily, CIS welcomes many guests for various reasons, and a comment we often receive from them is
that “CIS students are bright-eyed and appear excited to be here”. Please continue to be a positive
force in the school. Negative comments and starting
rumors about other people have no place in school.
If you have concerns and want to get the correct
information please do not hesitate to directly contact the school. We are very proud of our school
and would like to thank all parents for their everyday
support, and look forward to working with all in the
CIS family in order to keep building our community
even better in 2011. Wishing a great year to all of

12月6日より冬学期が開始し2週間が経過したとこ
ろですが、すでに小学生は「クリスマスフィエス
タ」「シークレットサンタ」「G3アイヌセンター
＆科学技術館での課外授業」「G1おもちパー
ティー」「この一年の活動における授賞式」など
を行い、相変わらず盛り沢山の日々を送っており
ます！ふぅ～。今学期のテーマは「言語活動」。
新年開始後もPTSAイベント「落語」、「スペリン
グ大会」、「リーディングチャレンジ」などが待
ち受けており、読み書きやコミュニケーション力
を磨き上げていくため、新年もフル稼働で参りま
す!!
学校には日々、様々な理由で来校者が訪れます
が、その方々からよく「コロンビアの生徒達は生
き生きとしている」という言葉を頂きます。引き
続き温かく前向きな環境作りにご協力下さい。他
者への批判や噂話は、コロンビアには必要ありま
せん。正しい情報の確認、ご質問や不安な点があ
る場合には、直接学校にお尋ね下さい。自分達の
学校に誇りを持ち、常日頃の保護者の方々のサ
ポートに感謝すると共に、2011年もまたコロンビ
アファミリーとして、生徒、保護者、教師一同協

Sports Day!!
We were blessed with beautiful
weather this time around. Families starting arriving early taking
the best spots first closer to the
school and eventually encompassing the entire outside field.
It was great to see so many parents turning up to support their
children as they raced, jumped,
hopped and competed for the
coveted trophies!
This year we saw the Mighty Turtles, the
Red Dragons, the Wild Lions and the
Rapid Swallows competing in so many
wonderfully planned events. The music
was pumping with Ms. Presseau‟s famous
house mix which set the scene for some
courageous efforts on the students‟ part.
As I walked around during lunch time it
was great to see so many families enjoying each others company, sharing foods
and having a merry time. A great big
“Good Job” to all the CIS elementary
students.
Nihongo Kentei!!
We held the Japanese
Language Achievement
Test for all students in
elementary on Friday,
November 12th. This
official Japanese language standardized
test helps us to develop our program and
provide better language education for our students. We also
hope that it helps students know their
strong/weak areas to give them a guide for
future study as well as develop their confidence enthusiasm, and interest for learning
the Japanese language.

私達は見事な快晴に恵まれまし
た。子供たちを観戦するためによ
り良いスポット取ろうと家族の皆
さんは早めに到着し、ついには
フィールド全てを囲んでしまいま
した。トロフィーの獲得をめざし
て走り、飛び、跳ね、競争する子
供たちを応援する、たくさんの保
護者の方の姿はとても素敵でし
た。今年は、グリーンタートル
ズ、レッドドランゴンズ、イエロータイ
ガーズ、そしてブルースパローズがいろい
ろと楽しい種目で競っていました。プレッ
ソー先生の有名なハウスミックスのバック
ミュージックが、生徒たちの勇気あるプ
レーを盛り上げてくれました。ランチ休憩
のときには、家族同士でお弁当を一緒に食
べたりなどして楽しい時間を過ごしている
のが見られました。CIS小学生全員、大きな
大きな”Good Job”でした。

The Spanish Club
¡Hola, amgios! Hello, friends! ¿Como estan?
How are you? ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Happy
New Year! A group of students from grades
3-6 had a fantastic time learning Spanish
after school on Mondays. Through an assortment of interactive games, songs and
dialogues, they studied Spanish grammar,
vocabulary, and expressions. They also had
the pleasure of learning about the culture of
Spanish-speaking countries and the various
dances that originate in those countries. For
some of these students, Spanish is the 3rd
or 4th language that they are currently
learning. Although learning many languages
is not an easy task, these hard-working students are very committed and are enjoying
the challenge of learning Spanish! Let‟s continue learning Spanish with as much enthusiasm as we started the year with! ¡Hasta la
vista! Until we meet again!

Nuevo!（明けましておめでとうございま
す）小学３～６年生の月曜日の放課後、
楽しくスペイン語を学んでいます。ゲーム
や歌、ダイアログを効果的に取り入れなが
ら、スペイン語の文法、単語や表現方法を
学習しました。また、スペイン語圏の国の
文化やその国から生まれたダンスも学びま
した。多くの言語を習得することは簡単で
はありませんが、生徒たちはとても熱心
で、スペイン語へのチャレンジを楽しんで
います。熱中できるだけ熱中して、スペイ
ン語の勉強を続

contest. There were 137 entries in the elementary category. The 10 best works were
selected as winning work, and

And the Winner Is….
On December 17th,
an award ceremony
was held for elementary students. For
those new to CIS, this
award ceremony is a
time where students
are acknowledged for
their excellence. This
excellence can come
in the form of hard
work in a particular subject area or through
modeling good student behaviour. A new award
was given out this year for class involvement. On
a special note, Izumi Takahashi and Mizuki Kishida
in Grade 6 won the Leadership Award. Grade 5
students Takara Nishizaki and Yasuka Mihara won
the Leadership Award as well. This award is for
students who display leadership qualities both in
the classroom and out on the field during recess.
Congratulations!
Inogashira Trip
On September 24, 2010, the grade one class,
along with two parent volunteers, took the train
to Inogashira Park Zoo to see the animals. This
trip was the culmination of our science unit on
Living Things, our art unit on drawing and sketching, and in math with counting. Children looked
in the zoo for various mammals and birds and
counted how many they found. Everyone had a
chance to hold a guinea pig and then some down
time to stretch our muscles at the playground after a picnic lunch. A very
big thank you to Ryunosuke Sado‟s mom and Toa
Yokoyama‟s mom for
helping us on the trip !

尊良くんと三原康加さんも同じくリーダー
シップ賞を受賞したことです。この賞はクラ
ス内、そして休み時間中のグランドで見せた
リーダーシップの資質を評価しています。お

９月２４日に、Gr.1のみんなで井の頭動物公園
にフィールドトリップに行きました。今回は、
Ryunosuke SadoとToa Yokoyamaの保護者の方に
も引率頂きました。今回のフィールドトリップ
の目的は、今みんなが勉強している様々な科目
の学習内容について、実習することです。例え
ば、理科の「生き物」や美術の描画とスケッ
チ、そして算数の「数」の勉強をしました。動
物公園についてすぐ、生徒達に「園内の哺乳類
と鳥類の数を数える」と
いう課題を与えました。

Science Fair

On Saturday the 27th of November last year, CIS was
proud to hold the first „Science Fair International‟ or
Sci.FI for short. The event was organized by CIS and
Go Spirit Bears!!
live-in-japan.com, a non-profit, non-political organization
that provides useful information and events for children
in the Kanto area. Science Fairs are a great way for
students to apply the scientific investigation skills that
they have been learning at school to a topic that they
find interesting.
The Junior Division
There were entries from over 50 students from many
different International schools including our own elementary, junior and senior high school students, so the
gymnasium was bustling with activity as the displays were
set up. The participants then had some time to wander
around and check out the „competition‟. It was amazing
to see the range of topics investigated and the innovative
ways the investigations were carried out.
Before the advisors examined each entry, Anand Goswami PhD, a research scientist from RIKEN, gave the
key speech in which he talked about his area of research,
mental illness. The speech was interesting and gave
some insight to how scientific investigation is conducted
at the highest level. Everyone who participated received
valuable feedback about their project and were awarded
a participation certificate. The same date has been set
aside for next year and we hope to see even more students being involved next year and more families show-
ing their support.
昨年１１月２７日（土）、CISのキャンパスでCISとlive-in
-japan.com主催による、「Science Fair International
(SciFI)」が催されました。 live-in-japan.comは関東エリア
を中心に、子供達にとって有益な情報やイベントを提供
するサービスを展開している非営利・非政府団体です。
生徒たちにとってこのフェアは、学校の授業がきっかけ
となって初めた研究内容を、大勢の人の前で披露できる
絶好のチャンスです。今年も、CISを含む様々なイン
ターナショナルスクールから、50人以上の生徒の参加申
し込みがありました。生徒達の展示物やプレゼンテー
ションで開場は大いに賑わいました。他のグループの研
究発表を見学する機会もあり、皆、大いに刺激されたこ
とでしょう。それにしても、生徒達が取り組んだ研究内
容の幅や、その研究方法にはとても驚かされました。研
究アドバイザーが審査を始める前に、理科学研究所で研
究員を努めるアナンド・ゴスワミ博士から、専門分野
（精神疾患）についてのスピーチを頂きました。とても
興味深い内容のスピーチで、高度な科学調査がどのよう
に行われているかを知ることが出来、見識が開かれる様
な思いがしました。参加生たちにとっても、自分たちが
手掛けたプロジェクトが高い評価を得、賞を受賞する
ことができたので、ともて有意義な時間となったのでは
ないかと思います。来年も、今年と同時期にフェアを実
施する予定で、より多くの生徒さんの参加と、保護者の
方々のサポートを得られることを期待しています。
Computer Quick Fixes
Every year students at Columbia have trouble printing, researching, and connecting to the Tera-Station
or internet. Here are a few tips on how to overcome your daily computer frustrations;
1- Connecting to the Internet- Normally this is
because you are using a proxy setting which is not
possible with our WiFi system.
Fix= go to control panel, click internet options, go
to connections, click LAN settings. Inside this pop
screen make sure the Automatically detect settings is
checked and the proxy server is unchecked. Click
apply, close everything and try to reconnect to the
internet.
2- Cannot Print- 9 times out of 10 your paper size
is incorrect.
Fix= Open Word, go to menu, click Word options,
choose Advanced, under the Print section make sure
Scale content for A4…. is checked and you have
chosen Use Printer settings for default tray right
under that. Also, from Start menu click printers and
faxes, choose the student printer and right click,
choose Printing preferences, choose A4 as the paper
size and click Apply.

今年に入り、「テラステーションやインターネットに接続出
来ない」という問題が頻繁に発生しています。システムに関
連する諸問題と、その対処法を列記しますので、ご参考下さ
い。１．インターネットに接続できない：主な原因→学校の
WiFi環境では使用できないプロキシ設定を使用している可能
性があります。対処法→ ①コントロールパネルから次の順
でプロキシ設定画面に移動。「Internet Option / インター
ネット・オプション」 → 「Connection Tab / 接続タブ」 →
「LAN Setting / LANの設定」。 ②設定画面で「Automatically
Detect Setting / 設定を自動的に検索する」を選択し、プロキ
シサーバーがアンロックされていることを確認。「適用」を
クリックした後、設定画面を全て閉じ、再度インターネット
への接続可否を確認。２．プリントできない：主な原因→プ
リントサイズが、学校のプリンターでは対応できないサイズ
に設定されている可能性があります。対処法→Wordを起動
後、次の手順で用紙設定を変更。①「ファイル」から「オプ
ション」画面に移動し、「詳細設定」を選択。②「印刷」の
設定画面までスクロールダウンし、「A4または8.5 × 11イン
チの用紙サイズに合わせて内容を調整する」に✓があるかど
うか確認。③同じ画面で、「通常使う用紙トレイ」が「プリ
ンターの設定を使用」に設定されているか確認。別の対処法
→①PCの「スタートメニュー」から「ディバイスとプリン
ター」を選択。②使用しているプリンターを「右クリック」
し、「印刷設定」画面の「原稿サイズ」を「A4」に設定
に、「適用」ボタンをクリック。

ければ幸いです。今年度初のイベントは、PTSA主催
の英語で行われる落語です。今年の一月には、韓国
がタイを訪問する機会が訪れます。このように今年
度も盛りだくさんなプログラムが実施される予定で
す。生徒にはせっかくの貴重な機会を存分に活用し
ていただきたいです。授業だけではなく、課外活動
やクラブ活動も今たけなわです。冬学期の中間評価
も直に発表されますので、生徒が中間試験に向けて
から１５名の生徒が文化的交流を目的にコロンビア準備する時期となりました。今年卒業する生徒は大
にやって来ます。毎年恒例のスキー遠足は二月に開学への申請書を提出する準備に取り掛かる時期にな
りました。多くの教師やスタッフの協力やサポート

Get a Helping Hand

Elementary Mentoring
The CIS Mentoring Programme was set up in
2007 by the teachers and students at CIS to
“help each other”. The mentors volunteer to
teach or help with schoolwork after school, for
about 30 minutes to 1 hour, once every week.
This programme was open for middle school
and high school students. However, we opened
it for elementary school as well recently. The
mentors attempt to explain and teach students
in an easy and fun way. Ryuta Kato is helping a
boy in grade 5 who says “it helps me learn
grammar and it‟s fun!”. The elementary students
who have experienced the programme say that
it became enjoyable to study, and that their
grades went up high. We mentors are available
this term; if you need any help and/or have
more information about the program, or if you
are interested to join the program, please ask
Mr. Twist (middle/high school teacher), Mr.

CISメンタープログラムは、２００７年にコロ
ンビアの教師と生徒によって「助け合い」を
基に始められました。このプログラムは上級
生のボランティアが、週１回放課後に、ヘル
プが必要な生徒に30分から１時間程教えま
す。このプログラムは主に中学・高校学部が
利用していますが、最近では小学部も利用し
始めています。メンターの人は、教える生徒
のために説明や勉強を易しく、そしておもし
ろくなるよう努めています。加藤竜太の教え
子が“楽しくて、文法が分かる様になる”と
コメントをしました。このプログラムを利用
した小学部の生徒達は、勉強が楽しくなった
り、成績が上がったり、と色々な好評価があ
ります。今学期もメンタープログラムは実施
されます。ヘルプが必要な人やこのプログラ
ムのことをもっと知りたい方は、ツイスト先
生（中学・高校教師）、モリソン先生、また
は、ホームルームの先生にきいてみてくださ
い！メンタープログラムのメンバーは、皆さ
んの力になれるよう最大限の準備をしてお待

We grade 9s had already spent 3
years at Columbia International
School as junior-high school students.
At first, when we were grade 7, we
couldn't understand English, or what
teachers were saying. As a result, the
first year was pretty hard. On the
other hand, we made a lot of good
friends including older grade students. There is one more reason that
our school life was hard, and it was
the homework. The amount of homework piled up, and became more
difficult as we moved up grades.
However, after all, we're having a
comfortable school life and also having a lot of fun. Right now, our English
skills have improved, and we are making more and more new friends. In
total, we are having a great experience at Columbia.

ればいけないこと様々な不安が頭をよぎ
りとてもとても大変でした。しかし、た

てもらい、乗り切ることができました。
学校生活が大変だった、もう一つの理由
は宿題です。宿題の量と難しさは、学年
が上がることに多くなり、難しくなりま
した。それにも増して、学校生活は充実
していて、楽しいです。今は、英語はだ

Interview with the Art Teachers
To understand you have to ask questions. This piece does just that. I
have always been very interested in the art teachers, frankly because I
am so horrid at art myself. I hope you have also been wondering about
them. I finally got the chance to pick their brain with a few questions
and here‟s what they had to say;
Q1- What led you to Japan and how long have you been at Columbia?
Myers- I have been at Columbia for 5 years. I first decided to come to
Japan because I wanted to get experience in the international school
system. I believed Asia would be a great place to start, and Japan was my
preference among Eastern Countries. Still think so.

だからです。皆さんも、彼らについて興味をそそられたことがあるのではない
でしょうか。ついに、彼らの知恵を借りる機会を得たのでいくつか質問をして
みました。さて、どんな答えが返ってくるでしょうか・・・。
Q-なぜ来日を決めたのですか？コロンビアに赴任して何年になりますか？
マイヤーズ先生(以下M)：コロンビアでは５年になります。来日を決めた理
由は、当時私は国際的な学校のシステムの中で経験を積みたいと考えていたか
らです。そしてそれを始めるのに、アジアはとても良い場所だと思いました。
東アジアの国々の中でも日本は私のお気に入りでした、そして今でもそれは同
じです。
Hill- I came to Japan 13 years ago to teach English and backpack around
Asia. During my travels I saw so many amazing artworks as well as
different kinds of architecture, and these made me want to teach art
again. I‟ve been at Columbia for 3 years now.

日しました。旅行中、多くの素晴らしい美術品や様々な建造物を目にするうち
に、美術を再び教えたいという気持ちが蘇ってきました。コロンビアは３年目
Q2- Do you have a favorite Japanese artist?
Q-お気に入りの日本人アーティストはいますか？
Myers- Yes, however my tastes and interest change regularly. I saw a
recent exhibition by Ikeda Manabu. Look him up, he has amazingly intricate and detailed works. His depiction of the Tokyo Train System is
something that any confused foreigner can appreciate.
M：はい、しかし私の好みや興味はよく移り変わります。最近、池田学さんの
展示会に行きました。彼の作品は素晴らしく複雑で細密です。彼の東京鉄道網
の描写は、困っている外国人にとってとてもありがたいものでしょう。
Hill- I don‟t have a favourite Japanese artist per say, but I really like
Bizen-yaki pottery. I guess if I had to choose an artist I would say Anjin
Abe, or Shiro Tsujimura. Both have produced the most amazing work.
Mr. Tsujimura‟s sons are also ceramic artists, and their work is quite
impressive as well.
Q3- How has the art program changed while you have been here?
Myers- When I came, there was another lead art teacher. Since I took
over I would think is has improved immensely.
Hill- Mr. Myers has done a great job, and I‟ve never worked at a school
where the art teacher has made the actual textbook for the students!

Q-二人がコロンビアに赴任してからどのようにアートプログラムは変わりま
したか？
M：私が赴任した当初、もう一人アート教師がいました。その後、私が引き
継ぎましたが徐々に改良し、今では大きく向上したと思います。
H： Mr.マイヤーズは本当に素晴らしい仕事をされていると思います。今ま
で赴任した学校の中で、実際に自分で生徒のために教科書を作った教師に会っ
たのは、マイヤーズ先生が初めてです！
Q4- What advice can you give people that say “oh I‟m no good at art!”
Q-“美術は苦手！”という人々に何かアドバイスするとしたら？
Myers-With some proper instruction, I know for fact, I can make you
better than you are now. Besides, there is more than just creation in an
art class. There is appreciation and enjoying the excessive history of art.
At least so you are not left out of conversation, or sound like an idiot at
an art gallery.
M：いくつかの適切なアドバイスを受ければ、誰でも必ず今よりも技術的に良
くなるはずです。美術のクラスでは、作品を創ることがすべてではありませ
Hill- There are a lot of people who feel like they‟re unable to express
themselves through their own art, yet they enjoy going to galleries because they know what they like, or they understand what they see. Art
isn‟t just about being able to draw something well.
Q5- What would be an excellent new addition to the art program?
Hill- I majored in ceramics at University so I‟d like for us to have a kiln.
I‟d love for our students to be able to create clay sculptures, as well as
functional works of art. And using glazes is always a lot of fun for students, it allows them to turn even the most simplistic piece into something exciting.
Q6- What experience in Japan is most memorable or are you fond of?
Myers- I am going to have to go with my marriage to Wakana, and the
news of my coming identical twin boys this spring.
Hill- I don‟t have anything as exciting as that, but 8 years ago I backpacked around Kyushu and saw lots of volcanoes, crazy coloured hot
springs, and Arita-yaki. The Karatsu Kunchi festival was pretty cool too.
I really want to go again.

くともあなたは、会話から取り残されることはありませんし、アートギャラ
リーで恥ずかしい思いをすることもないでしょう。
H：自分のアート作品を通して自分をうまく表現できないと感じる人が沢山い
ますが、そんな彼らも自分の好きなアートを知り、また理解し、アートギャラ
リーに足を運ぶのを楽しんでいます。アートは、作品を上手に創るというこ
とだけではないのです。
Q5-
アートプログラムの次の新しい試みはなんですか？
H：私は大学で陶磁器を専攻しました。いつか窯を学校で持つことが出来、
将来的に生徒が陶器の彫刻や、機能的なアート作品を造ることができたら良い
と思います。釉薬（ゆうやく）を使うことは生徒にとってはとても楽しいはず
です。それはもっともシンプルな作品をとてもエキサイティングな作品へと変
化させてくれます。
Q6：日本での経験の中で、もっとも印象的、またはもっとも好きなことは何
ですか？
M：わかなと結婚し、今年の春に一卵性の双子を授かるというニュースを聞い
たことです。
H：それに比べれば私のは大したことはありませんが、8年前に私は九州を旅
して、いくつかの火山や奇妙な色をした温泉や有田焼を見ました。唐津くんち
祭もとても素晴らしかったので、また九州を訪れたいです。

Supporting Canada through Volunteer Activities
Study in Canada Fair
What a wonderful opportunity we took
advantage of late November of last year.
We were invited by the Embassy of
Canada to send volunteer students to
help chaperone guests at the embassy‟s
Study in Canada Fair. This was a 2 day
event that saw nearly 1750 guests looking for education and work in Canada.
Columbia students handled guest inquiries responsibly and led people to booths
they wished to attend.
The embassy said “The Public Affairs
Section of the Embassy of Canada would
like to express our appreciation for the
assistance in promoting Canadian educational excellence in Japan during the
course of the Study in Canada fair.”
Volunteers were; Aiko Shigeta, Manan
Watanabe, Juri Yamamoto, Satoko Nakamoto, Shoichiro Watahiki, Kanna Yoshida
and Maya Takeda.

れました。2日間にわたる「スタ
ディーinカナダフェア」のイベント
には約1750名の方がカナダでの教育
や仕事の情報を求めて来館されまし
た。コロンビア生は、イベント来場
者の各ブースへの誘導係りを務めま
した。大使館から、「カナダ大使館
の広報活動部門は、スタディーinカ
ナダフェアで、優れたカナダの教育
を普及することにお手伝い頂いた皆
様に感謝いたします」というお言葉
を頂きました。参加ボランティア生
は、茂田愛子、渡辺茉南、山村珠
理、中本智子、綿引昇一郎、吉田栞
菜、武田真耶さんです。
A Christmas Story
My family (daughters Olivia-4yr and Isabelle-6mo.,
wife Mayuki and relative Ryotaro) embarked on a
journey back to North Carolina where my mother
and step-dad have been living for the past 5 years.
For Isabelle and Ryotaro it was their first plane ride
and first time to America.
The purpose of this trip was to enjoy Christmas and
New Years the American way not sight seeing. My
mom was aware of this and had prepared and NOT
prepared many things for our experience and time at
her place. Below are a few things we did and I hope
that it will give you ideas to beef up your holiday
festivities the next time around.
1- Popcorn garland: Thread needles with string and
start pushing popcorn onto the needles as close as
possible to the center. When you have made
enough tie the different pieces each family member
made together to form one long strand and hang it
on or wrap it around the tree. Alternate your popcorn with cranberries to add color.
2- Christmas cookies: Using food dye, color regular
white frosting green and red. After baking Christmas
shaped cookies start a decorating party! Its that
simple. Using Christmas sprinkles makes them that
much better!

私の家族（娘のオリビア(４才）、イサベル(６ヶ
月)、妻のミユキ、親戚のリョウタロウ)は、私の
母と義理の父が５年間ほど住んでいるノースカロ
ライナへ旅行しました。イサベルとリョウタロウ
にとっては初めての飛行機、そして初めてのアメ
リカでした。
今回の旅行は観光ではなく、アメリカらしいクリ
スマスと新年のお祝いを家族と過ごす事が目的で
した。母はそのことを分かっていたので、準備で
きることは色々としてくれました。私達が祝日に
楽しんだ事を、皆さんにも是非試してみて欲しい
と思います。
１－ポップコーンの花輪：ポップコーンの中心に
糸を通した針を通していきます。たくさん通した
ら、家族それぞれが作った部分を繋げて、一つの
長い花輪を作り、それをクリスマスツリーに飾り
ます。クランベリーでポップコーンに色を付けて
もよいでしょう。
２－クリスマスクッキー：白の糖衣に緑と赤の
フードカラーを使います。クッキーが焼き上がっ
たらデコレーションパーティーの始まりです！と
てもシンプルでしょう。クリスマス用のスプリン
クルをかけてみるといいと思いますよ！

Go Go Rakugo
新年を迎え、１月７日に桂かい枝師匠による英語落語で、ＰＴＳＡ
は皆さんに初笑いを提供することができました。いかがだったで
しょうか？
「笑う門には福来る」ということわざがあるように、「笑う」こと
は、心身の健康にいいと言われています。皆さんも友達との会話や
コメディーなどを観て大笑いすると、気分がスッキリし、気持ちが
明るくなった経験が何度もあるのではないでしょうか。
「笑い」の効用が世界的に注目を集めたのは、1960年代米国サタ
デー・レビュー誌の編集長だったノーマン・カズンさんが、強直性
脊椎炎という難病に５０歳で襲われたのですが、「喜劇やコメ
ディーなどを観て“笑う”」という療法で、７６歳まで生き延びた
というのです。このことは世界的に話題になり、その後「笑い」に
関するさまざまな研究が行われてきました。最近では「笑い」は心
の交流を生み出すだけでなく、心身によい影響をもたらすことが、
医学的にも明らかになっています。笑いによって脳血流量は6～7割
もアップし、血糖値も低下するというのです。
私たちは「楽しい（おかしい／面白い）から笑う」のが普通です
が、うまくいかない時など楽しくないときでさえ反対に、笑うフリ
（動作）をするだけでも「笑いの効用」があるそうです。時には、
「笑う」こと、「満面の笑み」を心がけてみるのもいいのではない
でしょうか。
Model U.N.
I had heard of the Model United Nations before, but I never
took it into consideration. At first, I had no clue of what it was
and how it worked. However, after experiencing it, I realized
that Model UN is not what you want to ignore. Maya and I
worked very hard for the meeting at the “Kokuren University.”
It felt very bizarre representing a country that we knew nothing
about, but we put in great efforts into making that country
stand out. The Model UN gave us an opportunity to understand thoroughly world issues and what the world is doing to
solve these problems. In addition to this, we were astounded
about the level of knowledge on
world issues the students from all
over Japan had. However, most
importantly, we had a lot of fun!
We decided to participate in this
event in order to make it one of
CIS‟s major events, and pass it on
to others. This experience will
build individual‟s confidence in
taking leadership and making decisions. This is also the chance to
spread CIS‟s name around the
world. We recommend you to
participate in this event.

Happy New Year, we in the PTSA all wish you enjoyed the
new year event, English Rakugo by Mr. Kaishi.
Fortune comes in by a merry gate, laughter is surely one of the
best health remedies. We all know laughing makes us refresh
and feel better like after watching comedies or having fun conversation with friends.
Mr. Norman Cousins, who used to work for Saturday Review
in the 60s, suffered from Ankylosing spondylosis when he was
50 years old. But he lived until he was 76 years old by laughing,
watching comedies. This episode became famous and stimulated more scholars to study the potential of laughing for medication. Nowadays it is getting more obvious that laughing has the
power to cure. Laughing smoothens blood flow and decreases
blood sugar levels.
We laugh when we think
things are funny. It is a reaction but we can use it. When
things get tough and we have
to force laughter, the body
and the mind react the same
and we get better because
we are laughing! Well, just laugh or smile to others so we can
make ourselves smile!

私は“模擬国連”と言う言葉は聞いたことがありますが、
内容については全く知りませんでした。そのせいか、初め
の頃は模擬国連の意味と仕組みを全然理解出来ませんでし
た。しかし、経験後、私は模擬国連を無視してはならない
と気づきました。まやちゃんと私は国連大学で行われる二
次審査に向けて毎日努力しました。他国の意見や立場を代
表して発言することに対してとても違和感を感じました
が、代表国が目立つように努力しました。模擬国連は世界
問題について、また世界がどのように問題を解決している
のかを十分に知る機会を与えてくれました。これに加え
て、日本全国の生徒たちの国際
社会への知識の深さにも驚かさ
れました。模擬国連をCISの伝
統行事の一つとして次の世代へ
と、渡していきたいと思って参
加しました。この経験は、生徒
たちが将来自身のリーダーシッ
プを高め、自身の意思決定や協
調性に大変役立つことと思いま
す。これはCISの名前を全国に
広めるチャンスです。ぜひ、一
度参加してみてください。

Boys Basketball – This upcoming season will be an
exciting one for the Columbia Boy‟s Basketball Team.
The last couple of season‟s the boys have consistently
been one of the strongest teams in the league; howGetting their game ever, they haven‟t been able to win it all, falling just
short of the league championship several times.
on!!
With a strong group returning from last year‟s team
and several new players who will contribute, this year
could be the year the Columbia Boy‟s finally take
home the trophy. Come check out the action and
support your Columbia Spirit Bears Basketball.
Girls Basketball – This upcoming season will be
another strong one for the Columbia Girl‟s Basketball Team. Winners of last year‟s league championship, the girls return with a solid presence and new
players that are already showing dedication to the
game. The girls will definitely have a strong chance of
defending their title this year. With several home
games this year, come support your Columbia Spirit
Bears Basketball.
Girls Volleyball – The Columbia Girl‟s Volleyball
Team had a great season last term, coming in third in
the final tournament against other strong teams. The
girls played well, showing their improved skills and
teamwork with each game. We will miss the girls
who are leaving but expect the girls who are staying
to do even better next year. Thanks to everyone
who came out to watch and cheer for the team. Go
Columbia Spirit Bears!
Boys Volleyball - This past Fall Term 2010 brought
a "first" in Columbia sports. The first Columbia Boys
volleyball team participated in the International
school boys league. Though the team had only six
members, a lot of talent was on display at the games.
So, Kimitomo, Shushi, Ulysses, Yasutaka, Shoichiro,
and Taisei all represented Columbia very well in the
teams' debut. We played K. International at their gym
and ours, with the boys dropping the first match at K,
but coming back to take the next match on our
court. We also played Canadian International two
times with similar results. The boys picking up a win
at our gym, while the Canadian team pulled out a
victory on their court. While the league schedule was
short, the boys practiced hard each week to hone
their skills for each match. As noted earlier, the numbers were small for the team, but the talent and desire was big. We really hope we can continue with a
team next year. Mr. Hagerty and Ms. MacDonald
would like to thank the boys for their efforts this past
season and hope to build on this for next season.

シーズンも経験しています。昨年の強いチームに活躍が
期待される新しいメンバーが加わり、今年はコロンビア
の男子チームがトロフィーを持ち帰ることができるかも
しれません。彼らのゲームを観に来て、コロンビアスピ
リットベアーズバスケットボールをサポートしてください。
女子バスケットボール－コロンビア女子バスケット
ボールチームにとって、今シーズンも強いものとなるで
しょう。昨年のリーグチャンピョンシップ勝者でもある
彼女たちは、新たな仲間と共にすでに練習に励んでいま
す。今年も勝者のタイトルを守り抜く強さがあると信じ
ています。今シーズンもホームゲームを予定しています
ので、コロンビアスピリットベアーズバスケットボール
を応援しに来てください。
女子バレーボール－コロンビア女子バレーボール
チームは、他の強豪チームを抑え、ファイナル―トーナ
メントで３位に入るという素晴らしいラストシーズンを
経ました。毎回、息の合ったプレイをし、上達したスキ
ルとチームワークを見せました。このチームを去った生
徒がいることは惜しいですが、残りのメンバーで昨年よ
りも更に活躍してくれることを期待しています。チーム
の応援に駆け付けてくれた皆さん、ありがとうございま
す。がんばれ、コロンビアスピリットベアーズ！
男子バレーボール－２０１０年秋学期は、コロンビ
アのスポーツ界へ１位を持ち帰りました。コロンビア男
子バレーボールチームは、まずインターナショナルス
クール男子リーグに参加しました。チームメンバーは６
名だけでしたが、多くの才能が発揮された試合でした。
キミトモ、シュウシ、ユリシス、ヤスタカ、ショウイチ
ロウ、タイセイは、デビュー戦においてコロンビアの代
表として立派でした。Ｋ. インターナショナルとは彼ら
の体育館やコロンビアの体育館で試合を行い、最初の試
合では負けましたが、ホームゲームでは勝つことができ
ました。カナディアンインターナショナルとは２回試合
をし、同じような結果に終わりました。ホームゲームで
私たちが勝ち、彼らのコートで試合をするとカナディア
ンチームが勝ちました。試合のスケジュールは短期間で
組まれていたにも関わらず、毎週たくさん練習し、試合
のためにスキルを磨きました。尐人数のチームですが、
才能と欲望は大きいのです。来シーズンもこのチームで
続けていきたいと強く思います。ハガティー先生とマク
ドナルド先生は、前回のシーズンで努力してくれた彼ら
に感謝し、来シーズンも引き続き、がんばり続けてくれ
ることを期待しています。大変よくがんばりました！

As you know there is a 40 hour
requirement for volunteer activities
as a criteria for graduating at Columbia IS.
I understand it may be hard to find
avenues to get this done. Here is
one that has a fabulous reputation and does quite a lot
throughout the year.
Hands On Tokyo
Hands On Tokyo addresses the critical needs of the community by partnering with other organizations focusing on
environmental, educational, and social issues in Tokyo. By
collaborating with our partners to create projects designed
to meet their needs, we provide numerous volunteer opportunities for any individual or corporation looking to
make a difference in the community.
Currently, Hands On Tokyo has over 2,000 registered volunteers, arranges over 250 volunteer activities a year, and
has given back more than 15,000 aggregate volunteer hours
to the Tokyo community.
They do ask that all volunteers register with them through
their website so please visit it at www.handsontokyo.org

ルスクールの卒業資格の一つ

たくさんの活動をしている素晴らしいボランティア団体を
ご紹介します。
ハンズオン東京
ハンズオン東京は、東京都内の環境・教育・社会問題に重
点を置き、他団体とパートナーになって社会の重大なニー
ズを発信しています。パートナーと共同し、ニーズに合っ
たプロジェクトを企画して、社会がより良い場所になるよ
う協力したいと考える個人、または団体に、数々のボラン
ティア活動の場を提供します。現在、ハンズオン東京には
２０００名を超えるボランティア志願者がおり、毎年２５
０以上のボランティア活動を企画し、ボランティア時間は
総計１５，０００時間以上にもなります。ボランティア活
動への参加登録は、ウェブサイトwww.handsontokyo.orgを通
して行われています。
Outdoor Adventure Club
The Outdoor Adventure Club continued activities last term with
a kayaking trip to the Tama River. Club members participated in
a full day, beginner lesson provided by Gravity Kayak School. In
the morning session, under the blue sky and warm fall sun, students learned the basics of whitewater kayaking: paddle and boat
anatomy, getting in and out of the kayak safely, paddling strokes,
paddling in a straight line and turning. In the afternoon session,
students practiced paddling the kayak straight as they were guided
on a tour of the river. At the end of the day, the instructor, Mr.
Ouchi performed an Eskimo roll (when you tip the kayak upside
down and roll it back up while still sitting in the cockpit) students
were amazed such a move is possible! The students soon received an unplanned lesson on kayak rescue as one by one, they
began attempting the roll but couldn't get back up! Once the
students were wet, the water fighting began; splashing each other
with paddles. Some students were even brave enough to splash

nearby onsen to warm up and finish off the day. It was a great

先学期にアドベンチャークラブは多摩川においてカヤックを体
験しました。生徒は丸一日カヤックを楽しみ、初心者の生徒は
カヌースクールグラビティーが「初心者体験クラス」を用意し
ました。午前中のセッションではセルフレスキュー、基本スト
ローク(漕ぎ方)、流れの読み方、流れを利用した艇の操作方法
などを中心に基本的なスキルを身に付けました。午後のセッ
ションでは、多摩川を見学しながら、艇の操作方法を練習しま
した。一日の終わりの方では、インストラクターの大内さんが
エスキモーロールというカヤックの技（ひっくり返ったときの
対処のしかた）を実演してくれました。生徒はとても驚きまし
た。生徒も実際にエスキモーロールを試してみましたが、ひっ
くり返ったあと、なかなか元の状態に戻すことができませんで
した。生徒がいったん濡れたあと、艇を使って水の掛け合いを
始めました。ゴールデイ先生やインストラクターの大内先生に
水をかけた、度胸のある生徒もいました。夕方にはカヤックの
セッションも終わり、生徒たちは近くの温泉に温まりにいきま
した。もちろん保護者の許可を得た生徒だけです。笑いもあっ
たとても充実した一日でした。このクラブに興味のある方は、
いつでも大歓迎です。もちろん未経験者も大歓迎です。今学期
はインドア・ロッククライミングに行く予定です。興味にある
生徒はゴールデイ先生またはポールソン先生に聞いてみてくだ

I assume many of you know this already, but our school
is named after Christopher Columbus, the famous explorer
who found the American continent. Since his achievement,
the word „Columbia‟ was given a new meaning „new continent‟ or „new world‟. The word encompasses a special
meaning for us as well since it is our policy to encourage as
many students to make their first big steps towards their
global journey. However, I am rather disappointed by a
recent trend in youth culture where studying abroad is no
longer their popular dream. Indeed, adjectives used to
describe young adults, especially boys, are often associated
with passive connotations such as „introverted‟ and „soshoku-kei-danshi‟, which literally means „herbivorous young
males‟. Fortunately, I believe none of these words apply to
our students here at CIS.
Although Japan was not as rich as we are today, 50 years
ago our country was filled with dreams. Many young ambitious Japanese people had dreamed about studying abroad
and they seized every opportunity to reach their dreams.
Whether or not they had language ability was not their
concern. Those who could not afford to study abroad
applied for scholarships to make their way to America.
I have no doubt that those 13 days on a ship were the
most exciting time for them, dreaming what they could
possibly do when they arrive. Perhaps, some of them
even thought of the reality that this would not be
round trip.
50 years may sound like ancient times for some students, but considering the history of Japan, it is not very
long. The time has brought great prosperity to our
country, but at the same time, has seemed to have
taken away the ambitions of our youth to explore outside our country. I have asked myself, is it because they
have lost their spirit?
In 2010, two Japanese scientists, Dr. Eiichi Negishi, a
special professor at Purdue University in America, and
Dr. Akira Suzuki, an emeritus professor at Hokkaido
University earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. They
both studied in America. What they both had in common in their public speeches was that they clearly said,
“What is very important for young adults to do is go
abroad, and gain the opportunity to see our country
from the outside”. This truly is a message from the
Nobel Prize winners to us.
It is my desire to see our students work hard at our
institution and advance to a prestigious university overseas where they can exchange their ideas with students
from all over the world,

Leadership Conference: Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
Last October, Mr. McCliggott and I had the privilege of
attending the annual leadership conference organized by
EARCOS. Although it was set in the beautiful tropical
coastline of Borneo, the conference was a busy four days
of attending speeches, workshops and functions. The
speakers and presenters were renowned in the world of
education and provided excellent sources of information
and quality opportunities to network with other educators from across the Asian region. We learned a great
deal from the conference which we have already started
to implement in our programs or will in the near future.
Mr. McCliggott met with many other administrators he
has met at previous events and had the chance to share
information and ideas that will help Columbia continue
to grow. The workshops that I attended gave me valuable insights into how we can revise our teacher appraisal
and professional development program as well as using
data to inform decisions that will have a positive impact
on student achievement. Of course we had the chance
to relax so we decided to play a couple of rounds of golf
which we normally cannot do during the school year. It
was a very successful trip and we were grateful that we
could learn so much.

昨年の十月に、EARCOS主催のリーダーシップ会議に校長
先生とともに出席する機会がありました。ボルネオ島とい
う美しい南国の島で開催されたにも関わらず、多数の演説
からワークショップに出席し多忙な四日間となりました。
演説者の多くは、著名な教育学者であり、アジア各地方の
教育者と人脈を保つことができるように多くの優れた情報
を提供をしてくれました。この会議に出席して多くのこと
を得、我々のプログラムに組み入れていき、または近い将
来組み入れて行く予定です。校長先生は他のイベントです
でにお会いした多くの管理職の方々と再度お会いする機会
に恵まれ、コロンビアが更に飛躍できるような多くの貴重
な情報や考えをお互いに共有することができました。私が
出席したワークショップでは、教師の評価やプロフェショ
ナル・デベロップメント・プログラムを見直していくため
にはどうすればよいのかなどの貴重｛きちょう｝な明察を
いただきました。さらには、データを使って生徒の到達度
に対して有益な影響を及ぼすような決断を通知すること
も、このワークショップから学びました。もちろん多忙な
四日間だけではなく、リラックスする時間もあり、普段な
かなかすることのできないゴルフをして楽しみました。と
ても充実した旅となり、多くのことが学べてありがたく思
います。

Chris: What or who inspired you to pursue basketball as a career
or "take it to the next level"?

Nash: The inspiration to pursue basketball as a career has two
phases for me, as a player and then as a coach. As a player, my love
and inspiration for the game evolved from my inabilities or lack of
skills early on. Invited to play in a pick-up game of basketball revealed my lack of skills and knowledge of the game. But that initiation
and humbling experience fueled the fire to learn and work to become the best that I could be with hard work. I received numerous
honors at the high school level and later in college as an All American. My skill level developed to the point that I was selected as the
No. 7 pick overall in the 1972 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. I
went on to have a 5 year NBA and ABA Professional career with a
couple of years in the European Professional league.

explain that when I left for the NBA, I had not received my undergraduate degree, and I realized that my education was my real ticket
in life, and needed to get that done. After two years of honing my
skills as a student assistant, I was asked to join the coaching staff as a
full time assistant coach. Well, I stayed in that capacity for 20 years,
and on April 13, 2007 was selected as the Head Coach for UH at
Manoa and was in that position for 3 years. My most memorable
experience as a coach was in the development of players and watching them grow into contributing members of society.
Chris: Why Japan?
ナッシュ：選手としてのキャリアと監督としてのキャリアの要素
のできなさ加減を思い知りました。私ができるのは「一生懸命練
習する」ことしかありませんでしたが、そのおかげで高校時代に
は多くの賞をいただき、大学レベルではアメリカ代表にまで選ば
れる栄誉を得ることができました。その結果プロバスケットボー
ルのＮＢＡで、デトロイトピストンズから７番目にドラフトされ
るというところまで上りつめました。５年間のＮＢＡ経験とその
後も各国のプロリーグで選手としてのキャリアを積みました。私
のバスケットボールへの愛着から、その後は監督としてバスケッ
トボールと関わっていくことになりました。私はＮＢＡの選手と
してのキャリアを選んだため大学を終わらすことができませんで
した。選手のキャリアを終わらせたときに、教育は自分の人生に
とってとても大事であることを痛感し、大学教育を終了させるこ
とにしました。その間、学生アシスタントとして大学のバスケ部
のお手伝いをそしていましたが、私が大学卒業するに合わせて正
式にアシスタントコーチとしての就職口をいただくことができま
した。その後２０年間も続けていくこととはその時は思いもより
ませんでした。２００７年にはハワイ大学マノア校のヘッドコー
チに就任しました。コーチとして指導していることの醍醐味は、
生徒たちが成長しそれぞれの社会に貢献していくのを見聞きする
ことです。
質問：なぜ日本へ？
ナッシュ：ハワイ大学での仕事を終えた後、日本のＢＪリーグで
Nash: After leaving the University of Hawaii, I was approached by
an agent to look at the possibilities of coaching in the BJ League in
Japan. Being familiar with the BJ League because my son played for
the Shiga Lakestars piqued my interest. I was impressed with the
leadership of Mr. Narita and the direction and vision he had for our
team. My family had traveled to Japan numerous times and the close
proximity to Hawaii just made Japan a perfect choice. The Saitama
Prefecture is in a great location and is close to the center of Tokyo. Paramount in making our decision to come to Japan, was the
family atmosphere of the team. You have to have harmony on a
team to be successful!

Chris: What advice do you give players to help their game?

to make sacrifices of time and friends to pursue their dream. Basketball is not just God given ability (although that surely helps), but
the desire to compete and make sacrifices to be their personal best.

Chris: What is the best way for someone starting in Japan to make
a basketball career?
Nash: A basketball career has numerous opportunities. As a player,
coach, trainer, sales, officiating, management and along with all of
these areas are sub-levels with endless opportunities. One must
identify the area that most interests them and then study and work
and intern and learn everything from the entrance level on up. It's
hard to have just a short answer to this question as there are so
many career possibilities in basketball.
プレイしていた関係でなじみがありましたので私の興味の対象と
なりました。また埼玉ブロンコスの成田社長のリーダーシップや
ビジョンに強く感銘を受けました。また私の家族は何度も日本へ
旅行にきており親近感もありましたので、日本での仕事を選びま
した。埼玉は都心にも近く環境も大変良いところでしたし、なにより
もチームの雰囲気がよかったのが決定的でした。
質問：選手たちにはどのようなアドバイスを出しているのですか？
ナッシュ：私は選手のバスケに対する真剣さを確かめます。次に
打ち込めるかどうかです。バスケは天性の能力だけではありませ
ん。もちろん天性のものがあればより良いですが、よりうまくな
るためにどれだけ競い合い、他のことを犠牲にできるかというこ
とが大切です。
質問：日本でバスケットボールで成功しようとする人たちへのア
ドバイスは？
ナッシュ：バスケには様々な機会があります。選手として、コー
チとして、トレーナーとして、チームのセールス担当、審判、
チーム運営などなど様々な分野でバスケットボールにかかわるこ
とができます。繰り返しますが様々な可能性があるので、一言で
は答えられませんが、まずは何をやりたいのか決めて、勉強し、
実際に活動しながら学ぶこと、積み重ねを始めることが大事で
す。

Rainbow Dance @ the Gym
先日、外部のダンス披露に親子で参加させて頂きま
した。
参加のきっかけは、コロンビアに置いてあったチラ
シを子供が持ち帰ってきて、「ヒップホップを学校
でやるから見に行こうよ！」と子供に誘われ、子供
がヒップホップ習っている事もあり興味があったの
で見に行くことにしました。
ダンススクールの発表会でしたが、発表を見に来た
子供達も一緒に参加できるプログラムとなっていま
したので、子供も楽しく見て、体験することが出来
たように感じました。
「どうだった？」と子供に聞きましたところ、「楽
しかった！！」と喜んでいました。
ダンスの発表会は見ている事が多いいですが、参加
型ですと子供達も見ているだけではなくて楽しめる
ので良いと思いまいした。
私は外部の方にジムを公開の場に貸している事を
知らなかったので、このように学校内で外部のプロ
グラムに参加できる事は、交流の場にもなりますし

新しい事の体験に繋がる事だと思いました。もっ
と、このような場を作っていただき、コロンビアの
生徒も参加をしていったら、良い体験が出来るので

Me, my husband and my child attended the
dance performance at Columbia. My child
brought a flyer of the dance performance from
the school, and asked us to go to see the performance because she learns Hip Hop dance
and is interested in the performance. Children
could enjoy watching and experiencing it because the participants could not only watch but
were invited to dance as well. My child answered “Had fun!!” to my question “How was
it?”
The dance performance is usually only watched
by others, but the open style let the children
enjoy both watching and dancing. I didn‟t know
our school lends the gym to the public community, but it is a good opportunity to have a connection with outside programs at school. I
would like the school authorities to offer more
similar chances, then Columbia students will be
able to have many precious experiences.

Rock Challenge Japan
On November 22nd,
2010, students from
the Grade 5, 6, and
junior high school
classes went to Kannai Hall in Yokohama
to participate in the
Rock Challenge Japan, an exhibition of
dance, music, and
drama from different schools in Japan. The
junior high school students created an amazing original dance about the theme of ecology
and humans and animals living in balance, and
all the students worked very hard to practice
and perform the dance. In the end, Columbia
was given the “best concept” award, showing
the judges recognized our excellent effort!
Everyone had an excellent time, and both Mr.
McBurney and Ms. Whitcombe are proud of
the students‟ efforts!

ト”賞を授与されました。各人が素晴らし
い時間を過ごせ、マクバーニー先生と
ウィットコン先生は生徒達の努力を誇りに
思っています。

How We Made a Difference
This fall, we learned about charity and making a difference in the
world. We wanted to do something ourselves, so we decided to
help endangered animals. We brainstormed lots of ideas, like tiedying t-shirts or selling snacks, but they were too complicated.
Back then, Art Club was making friendship bracelets, and one of
the Art Club members suggested that that making bracelets was
cheap, easy, and fun! We all took a vote, and so our project began!
The money we raised is going to help a charity called the WWF
(World Wildlife Fund). It's a charity that helps endangered animals from becoming extinct. We chose to help pandas, polar
bears, arctic foxes, wolves, and grizzly bears. To "adopt" one kind
of animals costs $40, so for 5 types of animals we needed to
raise $200! If we raised more than that, we decided to donate it
to the WWF to help animals in general.
We started making and selling bracelets in November. We taught
each other different designs, and worked hard at home and
school. Our original goal was to sell 150 bracelets, which would
raise 15 000yen. To our surprise, we sold 4 times as many as we
predicted: 595 total! That means we raised almost 60 000 yen!
We're so happy that we can help even more animals. We thank
you all for helping us by buying so many friendship bracelets.
Together, CIS has made a big difference for endangered animals,
and we couldn't have done it without you!

ました。私たちは自分達でできることを何かしたくなり、絶滅の危
機にさらされている動物を助けることにしました。絞り染めTシャ
ツ、お菓子の販売などたくさんのアイデアを考えましたが、それら
はとても難しいものでした。以前、アートクラブが友情ブレスレッ
トを作り、そのメンバーの一人が、安くて簡単に作れて楽しいと教
えてくれました。全員で投票して決め、私たちのプロジェクトが始
まりました。集めたお金は、絶滅しかけた動物を助けるWWF（世
界自然保護基金）と呼ばれるチャリティーに寄付されるものです。
パンダ、シロクマ、北極キツネ、おおかみ、ハイイログマを助ける
ことにしました。一種類の動物を選択するのに最低４０ドルの寄付
が必要になるので、５種類の場合は２００ドルになりました。もし
その金額よりも多くの寄付を集められた場合は、そのお金を一般動
物のために寄付することにしました。ブレスレット製作と販売を１
１月から始め、お互いに違ったデザインを教え合い、家でも学校で
も一生懸命頑張りました。目標は１５０個のブレスレット販売で、
１万５千円の寄付でした。想像していたよりも４倍近くの５９５個
を販売することができ、およそ６万円の寄付金を集めることができ
てとても驚きました。私たちは、より多くの動物を助けることがで
きたことを嬉しく思いますし、多くの友情ブレスレットを買ってく
れた全ての人に感謝しています。CISと一緒に絶滅の危機にさらさ
れている動物に大きな手助けができたことは、皆様方のご協力なし
では成し得ませんでした。

The Grade 5's interviewed each other after our charity project,
and here's what they said:
Q: Why did you decide to help the animals?
A: I chose animals because I like animals. Also, if animals are in
trouble the food chain will break. (Mai Yanai) Animals are important to us, and we need to take care of them. (Rudei Akita)
Q: Would you do it again?
A: Yes! I would like to try it again, because it was really popular
and we raised a lot of money! (Moka Tsuda) Yes, because there
are more animals that need our help! (Risa Hasegawa) Yes. We
could raise money for people or the environment, because they
need our help too. (Himeka Kakinuma)
Q: How did you feel when you sold more than 150 bracelets?
A: I felt very happy that I could help endangered animals! (Koh
Sakamoto) I was really excited that so many people wanted to
help animals! (Marina Yagi) It was really fun! (Takara Nishizaki)
Q: How did you feel about helping animals, and why?
A: I was proud of myself, because I was able to help protect endangered animals. (Yasuka Mihara) I think helping the WWF is
great, because the animals will be safe and I am happy! (Soichiro

Q: What would you like to say to CIS students, parents and
teachers?
A: I would like to say "Thank you!", because they helped us save
the animals! (Ayano Tanaka) I would say "Thank you for helping

this past Halloween! Everyone got into the Halloween spirit this year including Daiki Shishido, a two
time winner of best costume for elementary.

costume from last year.
Daiki wasn‟t the only student
with an outstanding costume. Our elementary costume parade was an endless flow of crazy characters and cute
personalities. Our pizzazz was also evident in the crazy jack-o-lanterns produced in each class. It was a great time
for all!

Columbia DOJO for a Day
This past November 7th, 2010 the Columbia
International school gym was home to a band of
Karate experts.Yoshihiro Suzuki and Kamiya Akihiko
of the International Karate Organization
Kyokushinkaikan Group, South Oizumi Dojo/
Shakujikoen Dojo dropped in to perform various
katas and moves to a group of parents and their
children. It was a well-received event with many
eager children showing their delight at the skills of
the Dojo's members. But the event that really
highlighted the day was the participation of the
children showing their moves and kicks when asked
to do so. Mr. Holland and Mr. Hagerty had the
pleasure of watching their daughters Olivia and
Samantha get a kick out of strutting their stuff to the
delight of their proud dads. It was a fun day and
everybody went home with a smile on their face.

Fire Drills
For the safety of students and staff, each term
(November 5th, in the second term) at C.I.S. we
practice a fire drill. Once again we tested the alarm
systems and fire reporting procedures under simulated
emergency conditions. Such drills ensure familiarity
with exits, which in turn assures that everyone gets out
of the building promptly and in an organized manner to
a place of safety on the big field. We were told that we
arrived safely outside in record time so congratulations
to all students and staff for doing your best. Activities
included the Tokorozawa-Higashi City fire chief giving
students pointers for exiting the school safely.
Reminders from the chief included, to stay low and
cover your nose and mouth to protect yourself from
lethal smoke as you are leaving the school. It is also
important to know your first and second choice of
escape in case your first choice is blocked. Students in
grades six and seven also practiced putting out fires by
yelling „kaji da‟ and then hitting targets with fire
extinguishers. We want to thank the TokorozawaHigashi fire department for helping us once again reach
our fire safety goals.

昨年の１１月７日にコロンビアインターナ
ショナルスクールの体育館にて空手の集団に
よる演武が行われました。国際空手連盟極真
会館、南大泉道場所属の鈴木よしひろ氏と石
神井公園道場所属のKamiya Akihiko氏がコロ
ンビアの保護者と生徒のために様々な空手の
技を披露してくれました。彼らが披露してく
れた空手の技を大喜びで生徒は見ており、喜
ばしいイベントなりました。しかしこの日の
なかでもっとも喜ばれたことは、生徒が空手
の技を実践してみたときです。この日に参加
したホランド先生とハガテイー先生の娘（オ
リビアとサマンサ）達も楽しく参加してお
り、父親たちは微笑ましく見ていました。と
ても楽しい一日となり、誰しもが笑顔で帰っ
て行きました。参加された生徒に保護者の皆
様、お疲れ様でした。

在校生徒教師の安全のため、11月5日に避難訓練を
行いました。非常ベルの動作確認や、消防署への
通報訓練を非常時を想定して訓練しました。この
ような訓練を繰り返すことで、非常時に安全に素
早く避難できるようになれることができます。今
回は避難場所であるグランドに、もっともスムー
ズにかつ冷静に避難できたそうです。所沢東消防
署の方からも安全な避難についてのアドバイスを
もらいました。危険な煙が充満しているようなと
きは態勢を低く保ち、口や鼻を保護することもお
話しいただきました。また避難の方法も2つ以上考
えておくことで、初めの避難方法がダメでも冷静
に次の選択をすることができます。6年生と7年生

New PEP Schools
At the end of last year we welcomed our first junior
Program PEP school. Tokyo YMCA International
School, a school located on the other side of town,
currently has until grade 6 and had made initial efforts
towards creating more outgoing student support
services especially in the guidance area.
Now we have 11 PEP schools and are starting the
registration process with 2 more. Columbia is very
surprised to hear from a former student back when
the school was located in Hibarigaoka who is now a
school owner!! She is grown up, married, has children and runs a Hawaiian themed school named
Kailua International School in Chiba. She has shown
interest in supporting Columbia and we here that her
families are interested in Columbia‟s programs.
To date the Program has been very beneficial for all
schools involved. You may have seen some of the
schools taking recruiting booths at the Christmas
Fiesta. We hope that the opportunity produced
results in terms of new enrolments for those who
participated.

今年度末には当校で初めてのＰＥＰスクールからの
入学生が加わります。東京ＹＭＣＡインターナショ
ナルスクールは6年生クラスまでの学校で、生徒た
ちへの進路指導の一環としてこのプログラムに参加
しました。コロンビアでは現在11校がこのプログラ
ムに参加しており、2校が参加プロセス中にありま
す。コロンビアがまだひばりが丘にあったころの生
徒が、いまではプリスクールの経営者になったとい
ううれしい報告をいただきました。卒業後結婚し子
供をもうけ、ついにKailua International School in
Chibaという学校を始めたそうです。当校の同窓生
である彼女は当然当校を応援してくださっており、
彼女の学校に通う子供たちの家庭もコロンビアに関
心を持っていいただいているそうです。現在のとこ
ろこのプログラムは双方にとって良いものとなって
きております。クリスマス・フィエスタでは、この
プログラムに参加しているいくつか、の学校が宣伝
ブースを開いていたのに気付かれた方もいらっしゃ
るでしょう。このプログラムに参加していただいて
いる学校の皆さんが、より多くの生徒たちでいっぱ
いになっていけることが一番の願いです。皆様のお
知り合いでこのプログラムに興味をお持ちの方がい

Columbia’s Website Gets a Makeover
You have all probably seen the new website. It truly is a
thing of beauty. The school would like to thank Galvani
Creative Inc. for their wonder job and splendid design
work.
As we start using the website it is easy to see the great
potential uses for this site. Not only is it a wonderful PR
tool but it also comes with ample amount of new and fun
community tools. Under the Members category you will
find;
Alumnae- a place for all our past students to revisit
friends, share recent experiences and get caught up on
current Columbia IS happenings.
Intranet- here is a cluster of sites managed by the teachers that is similar to Facebook or Mixi, where comments,
pictures, class resources etc. can be placed and shared.
CIS Shop- Although not ready yet will be a place to make
purchases of uniforms and official documents which can
then be passed to students on their way home. These
are just a few of the new attributes of the site.
Yes, this site has it all, or at least a lot more than the last
one and we are sure that if everyone uses it, it will become a very important part of the Columbia IS society.

みていただくうちにお分かりになると思いますが、
いろいろなことがより簡単にできるようなホーム
ページです。学校ＰＲとしてだけではなく、たのし
いコミュニティーツールとしての役割も果たしま
す。メンバー専用のカテゴリーでは卒業生たちが懐
かしい思い出とともに仲間たちと盛り上がることが
できる場所があり、イントラネットでは各先生たち
専用のページがあり、フェースブックやミクシーの
ようにコメントや写真、課題や宿題などの情報が共
有できます。ＣＩＳショップはまだまだ先の話です
が、小さくなって着られなくなった制服を在校生同
士で融通しあったりできるようになるでしょう。新
しいホームページでは、今までできなかったことが
たくさんできるようになっているはずで、みなさん
に使っていただけるものです。
Youth Leadership Exchange
Columbia continues to expand its global reach
by making connections with other Canadian
schools in Asia. The opportunity for our students to meet and learn together with students
from other areas of the globe will not only create some wonderful memories but provide an
excellent learning experience and help them become global citizens. Recent meetings between
the Canadian curriculum, Lertlah International
School from Thailand and Columbia International School have resulted in the creation of a new
student cultural exchange program, the Youth
Leadership Exchange. In mid April for a two
week period students from Lertlah in grade 4
through 9 will visit Columbia and attend classes
with our students. Plans for a return visit by Columbia students in the summer of 2011 are
presently underway. I am sure it will be an exciting and memorable adventure for those who
participate.

化交流プログラムを発足することになりまし
た。４月中旬にラートラの4年生から9年生の生
徒たちが2週間の予定でコロンビアを訪れ、コロ
ンビアの生徒たちと授業に参加します。コロン
ビア生徒がラートラを訪問するプログラムは、
2011年夏を予定して、現在内容を調整していま
す。これは、お互いの学校にとって、面白くそ
して印象的なプログラムになるでしょう。

Korean Student Exchange
Our Organization
As a part of our ESLERs related activities, the school
tries to offer as many opportunities for students to
experience international/global exchange. Currently,
we are hosting 15 students from Korea. Those students are interested in Japan, the language and the
culture. We have a report that half of them are coming to CIS for English learning. This is only a small part
of globalization. Many students in Korea, China and
other Asian countries have been studying abroad for 2
to 4 years as they realize multi-cultural or multilanguage will be a norm in their near future. We are
discussing more invitations to other students in other
countries like HK and Thailand and hopefully our students will visit their school for exchange purposes this
year. For that reason, CIS needs volunteer host families in January, February and March for now. Living
with homestay overseas students is a very good way
for parents to experience a cultural exchange. In a
sense, it will be a good chance for parents to see how
great your child(ren) are by watching them help and
interact with foreign students who will probably become lasting friends.

ら１５名の生徒が体験留学にやってきます。彼ら
は日本や日本語、文化に興味がある生徒だそう
で、半数の生徒たちが英語のトレーニングにも強
い関心を寄せているそうです。これはアジア各国
の国際化のほんの一端で、韓国や中国その他アジ
アの各国の若者たちは、積極的に２年から４年間
の海外経験をしているそうです。彼らは自身と母
国の国際化や多文化共生化は、近い将来共通の変
化として避けられないとすでに認識しているよう
です。コロンビアでは香港、タイなどの学校とも
引き続き打ち合わせを続けており、相互訪問の機
会を作っていきたいと考えています。このような
理由から学校では１月～３月の間に、諸外国から
の留学生を受け入れるためのボランティア・ホス
トファミリーを募集しています。留学生との生活
は自国にいながら文化交流を体験できるとても良
い機会です。ある意味では、わが子がいかにすば
らしい（？）かを確認できるよい機会になるので
はないでしょうか。ちょうど、留学に出て初めて
自国のすばらしさを実感できるのと同じように。
Food Drive

ブースで食料の寄付をお受けする傍ら、セ
カンド・ハーベスト・ジャパン(以下、2HJ)
の活動を映像で紹介してくれました。２Ｈ
Ｊによると,飽食日本の中でも、フードセ
キュリティーに欠く人々が現在６５万人以
上いるそうです。２ＨＪは、そうした人た
ちのために安全な食料を提供することをメ
インに、日本で余っていて安全に食べられ
る多くの食料品を分配する活動を２０００
年より行っています。今回のフード・ドラ
イブでは、コロンビアファミリーの他に
も、外部からフェスタに遊びにきていただ
いた多数の方々にも、お家にある未使用で
賞味期限前の食品を寄付して頂きました。
この日一日で１００キロ近い食料が集ま
り、全ての食料は大竹さんによって2HJへお
今回のコロンビア・フードドライブは、ク持ち帰り頂きました。皆様のご協力に心よ
リスマスフェスタに行われ、セカンド・ハーり感謝いたします。また次回のフードドラ
ベスト・ジャパン事務局長の大竹正寛さんがイブでもご協力をお願いします。
The Columbia Food Drive was held during the
Christmas Fiesta. Mr. Masahiro Otake from the
Second Harvest Japan was at the booth all day to
collect foods from people, and at the same time
he showed the video to introduce the activity of
the 2HJ. According to the 2HJ, there are about
65 thousand people who lack the food security
even in Japan. The 2HJ has started their activity
since 2000 to help those people to secure foods
by 2HJ‟s distributing safe and edible foods collected from communities. In the Columbia Food
Drive, many foods were brought in from the
Columbia family members and also from the
people outside who came to enjoy the Fiesta. At
the end of the day, close to 100 kgs of food was
collected and Mr. Otake brought it back to the
2HJ. We thank those who donated. The next
Columbia food drive will take place again soon!

Columbia I.S. is now in its 22nd year of operation
and education. The school has went through many changes
and is increasingly successful as a solid choice for international
schooling in Japan.
Over the process of CIS growth we have been
maintaining a high level of communication with parents that I
consistently hear is a much appreciated aspect of Columbia‟s
customer service. Most of this communication is either by
phone or printed material. Obviously the time to put the
printer to rest is at hand.
In our classes we teach about our personal
“Ecological Footprints”, we teach about environmental awareness and how to increase the want to save our natural resources. Now, let us take the lessons we learn in the class
and apply it to our own school system, abide by our teachings
and make a real and present movement to turn our office
“green”.
The very first thing we can do is register a home email or webmail address for basic and periodic communication, we can also register a cell phone mail address for emergency contact. To do this, send both home and cell mail addresses with your name, your child‟s name and grade to [email protected] .

コロンビアは、今年で開校から２２年目を迎えます。その間
様々な改革を実施し、日本国内の国際教育において皆様の支
持を頂けるよう、日々努力しております。皆様のニーズに
叶った学校改革を行う為には、皆様と密にコミュニケーショ
ンを取り、皆様の声をくみ上げていくことが大切であること
は言うまでもありません。現在、保護者の方が学校との連絡
の際に用いられているコミュニケーション手段は、主に電話
かお手紙です。その際に使用される紙の量は決して尐なくあ
りません。
現在学校では、「エコロジカル・フットプリント = 生物
が環境に与える影響」について学習しています。この授業を
通じて、生徒たちが環境保護への意識を高めてくれることを
期待しています。そんな中、教職員を含める私たち「大人」
が今後求められるのは、生徒たちの見本となり、学校の「グ
リーン化」に向けて積極的に行動を取ることだと思います。
その手始めとして、現在の紙ベースのコミュニケーションか
ら、メールで連絡を取り合う方法に切り換えていくことが求
められていると考えています。その土台を整えるべく、皆さ
んが普段使用しているメールアドレス（PC及び携帯メール）

クールで学ぶ生徒は例外だと私は確信しています。
若い生徒の皆さんからは大昔に思えるかも知れませんが、長
い日本の歴史から見たらつい50年前、日本は貧しく、簡単に海
外に行ける時代ではありませんでした。しかし向学心に溢れる
人の中には、英語に自信が無い人でも、何とかお金をため、あ
した。これこそがノーベル賞受賞者の心からのエールだと思いま
私はコロンビアインターナショナルスクールの生徒一人一人が、
将来なりたい職業、叶えたい夢に向かってコロンビアで学び、世界
の若者が集う海外の大学に進学して欲しいものと願っています。各
人が国際舞台で活躍してくれることを大いに期待しております。
最後になりましたが、コロンビアの理事側を代表し、この紙面をお
借りいたしまして、皆さまと御一家が幸せで、健康を享受し繁栄す

Hello, everyone! We are the members of the
Student Council in Grade 10. In this article
we are going to introduce to you a bit about
our school life in 2010. First, we graduated
from junior high school in March. Some
friends are gone, and our high school life has
begun with new classmates. High school is
not so different from junior high school
where there is lots of homework and assignments, but we began to have more responsibility. For example, our ESL class has changed
to English, so we started to realize that we
have to study English more seriously as we
started to think about going to foreign university. Moreover, we have to volunteer
more than 40 hours in order to graduate, so
we started to think about participating in
community events more often. We are busy
everyday, but we are having a great time at
CIS!
WASC is Coming!
In early March, we will again welcome a visiting team from one of
our accreditations, WASC. The
last time they were here was during our self-study in 2008. Since
then we have submitted annual
reports on the progress we are
making in the critical areas for improvement and other school-wide
goals. This team will consist of
three members who will stay with
us for three days. Their purpose is
to learn about all of the programs and other improvements we have implemented in the last
three years that have had a positive impact on
student achievement and the school community.
They will observe classes, talk to students, teachers, staff and parents; and they will give us suggestions on how we can continue to enhance and
enrich a school that already has an excellent reputation. So if you see our WASC visitors please
give them a warm Columbia welcome and help
them in any way you can!

皆さん、こんにちは！私達はG10の生徒会のメ
ンバーです。私達はこれから2010年の学校生
活についてお話します。三月、私達は中学を
卒業しました。たくさんの友達が旅立って行
きましたが、四月から、新しいクラスメート
とともに華の高校生活が始まりました。宿題
やアサイメントが多いのは変わりませんが、
高校になって変わったことは、私達に責任感
が増えたことです。たとえば、基礎英語か
ら、本格的な英語の授業になり、大学進学の
ことも見据えてもっと真剣に勉強をしなけれ
ばならないと感じるようになりました。ほか
にも、卒業するためにボランティアの単位が
必要なため、私達は積極的にコミュニティー
活動に参加するようになりました。毎日忙し
いですがCISで充実した日々を送っています!

今年の３月初旬に、教育機関認定
組織WASCの査察チームを再びコ
ロンビアにお迎えする予定です。
前回彼らが来校したのは、2008年
でした。それ以降、私たちは改善
が必要なエリアに関する現在の学
校の取り組みや、全校の目標等に
関するレポートを毎年WASCに提
出して参りました。今回来校され
るチームは3名の査察官から構成
され、3日間にわたってコロンビ
アを査察します。彼らの目的は、
当校の全プログラムを観察し、過
去3年間に提示された学校改善のための対策案
が、実際に生徒の成果に繋がり、学校にとっ
て有益に働いているかを調べることにありま
す。彼らは、授業を見学し、直接生徒、教職
員、保護者たちと話をし、学校環境をさらに
豊かにするための提案をして下さいます。
WASC査察官を学校で見かけた際は、温かくお
迎えください、そして皆様が出来る範囲で査
察官の方にご協力頂きますよう宜しくお願い
致します。
