JAL スカラシッププログラム / アジアフォーラム
JAL スカラシッププログラムは、毎年アジア・オセアニアの大学
の公開発表会の場で、日本再建のための提言を行った。また、ア

2013JAL スカラシッププログラム
2013 年度の JAL スカラシッププログラムは、6 月 24 日～ 7 月
16 日の 21 日間にわたって開催された。今回でプログラムは 44 回
目となり、「活気あふれる日本を再現するためには～私たち若者か
らの提言」をテーマに、海外から 21 名の大学生（JAL スカラー）
が参加し、日本語を使用して実施された。また日本人学生 25 名も
プログラムに加わり、スカラーとの友好を深めた。

歩みを映画上映を含めつつレビューを行った。翌日は首都大学東
京大学院生の土屋依子氏によって、日本のモノづくり産業に関す
る講義及び秋葉原見学を含めたフィールドスタディー及びディスカッ
ションが行なわれた。

学生セッションでは、近現代を振り返る中で日本が抱える問題点
について理解を深めた後、魅力が薄れてきている日本をどうすれば
活気あふれる国にしていくことができるのか、４つの討議テーマをそ
れぞれ設定した。グループ毎に激しい議論を重ね、プログラム終盤

援拠点としての遠野市の役割をお話いただいた後、附馬牛小学校
を訪問、生徒達との交流を深めた。遠野ふるさと村の古民家にも
体験宿泊した。

アジアフォーラム in 石川
アジアフォーラム in 石川実行委員会とJAL 財団との共催で行われ
るプログラムで、石川県金沢市で開催された。今年は、
「活気あふ
考える」をテーマに、金沢市観光、日本文化体験、企業施設見学、
講義、グループディスカッションなどが行われた。学生達は、最終日
の公開シンポジウム「2013 アジアフォーラム in 石川」でその成果を
披露した。地元石川の 15 名の日本人学生もこれに加わり、事前の
グループごとのテーマ設定や準備に主体的な役割を果たした。
学生によるパフォーマンスも披露され、地元の人々とスカラーとの親
睦・交流が深められた。

フィールドトリップ ( 岩手）

白山市プログラム
白山市国際交流協会、白山市俳句協会が企画し、白山市が後
援する、白山市観光及び俳句創作体験が実施された。白山比咩
神社と獅子吼高原を訪問した後、白山市俳句協会の先生方指導
の下、それぞれが俳句の創作を行った。翌日には地元新聞紙面に
おいてもスカラーが創作した俳句が紹介された。

The JAL Scholarship Program invites college students from across Asia
and Oceania to Japan each year and provides them with opportunities for
workshops and cultural interchange. Through these activities, the Program
aims to enhance their understanding beyond national borders, and
develop young men and women who will assume future leadership roles in
the region.
The JAL Scholarship Program was launched in 1975 by Japan Airlines.
JAL Foundation took over the management of the Program when it was
established in 1990, and has since been working to improve its content
each year in tune with the needs of the times. A total of 1,492 students
have participated in the program so far.

The 44th Program was held for 23 days from June 24 to July 16 under
the theme of “Revitalizing Japan – Proposals from the Youth”. The session
was held in Japanese with 21 international students participating. Twentyfive Japanese students also participated and deepened friendships with
their foreign counterparts.

Opening Seminar
Mr. Takehiro Yoshimura, a graduate of Hitotsubashi University, reviewed
the development of Japan from the end of the war to the present
showing some historical films. The following day, Ms. Yoriko Tsuchiya, a
graduate of Tokyo Metropolitan University, gave a lecture on the Japanese
manufacturing industry, followed by a field study at Akihabara as well as a
discussion on the relevant subject.

Keynote Speech
Ms. Shihoko Nemoto, Associate Professor of Nihon University College
of Economics, spoke on“Japan's Challenges”. She analyzed the current
situation of the world and Japan based on actual examples such as the
fight over resources, the end of American hegemony, Abenomics, and the
nuclear power plant issue. She gave an explanation and her own views
on the subject; “how to ensure a sustainable society and economy when
money and resources are limited – how we should act, our priorities,
how we should obtain the understanding of other parties.” Toward the
end of her presentation, World Shift (a world movement aiming to shift
to a sustainable society) was introduced as a means for change. The
participants gave their thoughts and made a small presentation on what
and how they could change in different areas.

Student Sessions
The participants deepened their understanding of problems currently
facing Japan through a study of Japan’s modern history. They then were
divided into four groups to discuss how to revitalize Japan which is often
said to be losing its former attractiveness, and each group took up one
of the four themes they had established themselves and engaged in
heated discussion. At the end of the session, each group presented its
recommendations for recreating a vibrant and attractive Japan. Through
cooperation and planning by the AIESEC local committee at the University
of Tokyo, the students joined in discussion, visited the University of Tokyo

campus, and took part in fieldwork in the old town area called “Shita-Machi”.
●
Field Trip
The Field Trip Program, in conjunction with the East Japan Railway
Culture Foundation, has been sponsoring a study tour to provide
scholarship students with exposure with Japanese local culture. This year,
the students visited the cities of Kamaishi and Tono in Iwate Prefecture. In
Kamaishi, the students had an opportunity to listen to Ms. Akiko Iwasaki,
proprietor of the Japanese inn Horaikan, speak about her experience of
being swept by - and surviving - a tsunami caused by the Great East Japan
Earthquake, and afterwards pouring her energies toward the recovery of
the region. Her talk left an extremely strong impression on the participants.
The students also had an opportunity to participate in voluntary work
for the restoration of the damaged area. In Tono, Mayor Toshiaki Honda
spoke on the city’s role as a logistical support base for the areas hit by the
earthquake. Then, the students visited Tsukimohshi Elementary School,
where they had memorable exchanges with local children. The students
also gained exposure to traditional Japanese culture by staying overnight

Asia Forum in Ishikawa
This program has been co-hosted by JAL Foundation and the Asia
Forum in Ishikawa Executive Committee, and was held this year in the
city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture under the theme “Revitalizing
Japan – Thoughts on what Ishikawa and Kanazawa should be like in 10
years”. The program included sightseeing, experiencing Japanese culture,
visits to companies and other facilities, lectures and group discussions in
accordance with the theme. The students presented their achievements at
the 2013 Asia Forum in Ishikawa, an open symposium held on the last day
of the program. Fifteen Japanese students from Ishikawa also participated
in the program and played a leading role in selecting themes for group
discussions and other preparations.
After the Forum, the scholarship students joined the International
Exchange Festival and enjoyed a powerful taiko drum performance by
the local Asaka Daiko team. Both international and Japanese students
also presented their own performances and deepened friendship and
exchanges with the local residents.

Hakusan City Program (in Ishikawa Prefecture)
Hakusan International Association, Hakusan Haiku Association and the
city of Hakusan provided the students a sightseeing trip of the city and
lessons on how to compose haiku. After a visit to Shirayama Hime Shrine
and the Shishiku Highlands, the students experienced making haiku in the
Japanese language under the guidance of members of Hakusan Haiku
Association. Their haiku were introduced in the local newspaper the next
morning.

Homestay
This program aims to deepen the students’ understanding of Japan
through first-hand experience of Japanese life and customs. Several
families in Ishikawa cooperated in the program as host families, while
several families of Japan Airlines employees and retirees acted as host
families in Tokyo.

世界こどもハイク
World Children’s Haiku
昭和 39 年 (1964 年 ) に日本航空がアメリカでの音楽番組で呼びかけた「ハイ
クコンテスト」が、海外での俳句普及のきっかけとなったが、それを受けて、平成
2 年 (1990 年 ) の日航財団（現 JAL 財団）設立以来、
日本及び全世界の子供（15
歳以下）を対象とした「世界こどもハイクコンテスト」を 2 年に一度開催している。
このプログラムは、現地の小中学生にハイク創作の楽しさを広め、世界で
最も短い
「詩」であるハイクを生み出した日本文化や日本への理解を深めても
らうことを目的として、海外各国の教育機関、日本航空海外支店などの協力
のもと実施している。このコンテストの作品は、ハイクと絵で構成することとし
ているが、ハイクを詠んだときの目の前の光景や記憶にある情景を子供たち
自らの手で描きとめた絵とハイクの創作を通して、子供たちの豊かな感性を
育むことも目的としている。

The Haiku Contest which Japan Airlines held in the U.S. in 1964 through a
radio music program opened up a way for haiku to spread overseas. Since its
establishment in 1990, JAL Foundation has held the World Children’s Haiku Contest
every two years for children at the age of 15 and under around the world.
In the Japan Division, Japanese schools and supplementary schools abroad
many of which had shown interest in participating in the contest were invited
for the first time, and 2,395 haiku composed in the Japanese language were
submitted from 33 such schools.
Through this contest, which is held in cooperation with educational institutions
in each country and overseas branch offices of Japan Airlines, JAL Foundation
aims to spread the joys of composing haiku among children in elementary and
junior high schools around the world, and promote their understanding of the
Japanese culture which gave birth to haiku, the world’s shortest form of poem, as
well as the current situation of Japan. We invite children to send in their works
composed of drawings and haiku. The works brilliantly portray scenes which
children saw when they composed haiku or kept in their memory. Through
children creating such drawings and haiku themselves, we also aim to nurture
their rich sensitivity and spirits.
In the World Division, Armenia, Finland, Mongolia and Vietnam newly joined
the World Contest and Brazil, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Russia and Spain
resumed the contest, and Austria, Bangladesh, Latvia, Sri Lanka and Ukraine
submitted works for the first time. The Spain Division Contest and Vietnam
Division Contest were held as one of the official events celebrating 400 years
of relationship between Japan and Spain, and commemorating the 40th
anniversary of Japan-Vietnam diplomatic relations respectively.
Inquiries on contest participation have increased from foreign embassies
in Japan as well as school teachers abroad. In addition, the Special
Prize winning work by a visually challenged student in the 12th Contest
was reproduced in Braille in the book Haiku by World Children Vol.12 –
Impressions of Festivals , and consequently works by visually challenged
students from both Japan and abroad have increased. All prize winning
works in the 13th Contest will be posted on. JAL Foundation’s website and
selected haiku and artworks will be published in Haiku by World Children
Vol.13 – Impressions of Dreams in November 2014.
● Countries and regions which participated in the 13th World Children’s Haiku Contest
In the contest, the JAL Grand Prize and JAL Prizes are awarded to outstanding
works from each country and region. The Grand Prize winning works are
published in a picture book titled Haiku by World Children . In this book,
haiku are printed in the composers’ native languages as well as in English
and Japanese with a view to introducing those works all over the world. JAL
Foundation donates copies of the book to major public libraries in Japan as well
as related organizations overseas.
In addition, when the Foundation sponsors or supports haiku events in Japan,
the book Haiku by World Children and other haiku panels are displayed at the
sites to introduce world children’s haiku activities to the visitors.

ハイクプロジェクトの歴史
東京オリンピックが開かれた 1964年、日本航空は、日本文化を海外へ紹
介する事業の１つとして、ハイクを取り上げ、アメリカのラジオ音楽番組を通し
て
「ハイクコンテスト」を行ったところ、全米から 4万 1千ものハイクが投稿さ
れた。これが、今日につながるハイクプロジェクトの始まりであった。その後、
イギリス、アメリカ、カナダ、オーストラリアでハイクコンテストを実施。いずれ
の国でも、世界最短詩のハイクに子供たちや教師たちが大変な関心を示し、
応募作品も想像以上に素晴らしいものであった。
日航財団（現 JAL財団）設立の 1990年、大阪で開催された
「花と緑」の
万国博覧会にあわせ、世界中の 15歳以下の子供たちを対象に

● For clarity, the word haiku is written in kanji (Chinese characters) when referring
to traditional 17-syllable (5-7-5) poems composed in the Japanese language,
and in katakana (simplified Japanese script) when referring to three-line poems
composed in foreign languages.
History of Haiku Project
In 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Japan Airlines took up haiku as one
of the means to introduce Japanese culture overseas and held a haiku contest over a
radio music program in the U.S. As many as 41,000 haiku were submitted from all over
the country. This event was the first step leading to the current Haiku Project. Then,
JAL expanded its haiku contest into the U.K., U.S., Canada, and Australia. In each
country, children and teachers showed a strong interest in haiku, the world’s shortest
form of poetry, and the haiku works submitted were brilliant.
In 1990, the year JAL Foundation was founded, the 1st World Children’s Haiku
Contest was held for children all over the world aged 15 years and under timed
concurrently with the Osaka Flower and Green World Exposition. The current contest
is the 13th such event.
The works, composed of drawings and haiku, reflect the children’s sensitivity
and characteristic features, social conditions, and perspectives of their respective
countries, and help deepen the understanding of people living in distant countries and
regions. Prize winning haiku published in Haiku by World Children have been widely
introduced in textbooks and reference books in Japan and abroad, and effectively used
in the field of education.
Supporting Projects
During 2013-2014, the Foundation continued supporting various haiku
contests in Japan, where we introduced children’s haiku activities around the
world through panels of the World Children’s Haiku Contest and such.
◆ 44th National Students Haiku Contest
Since its establishment, the Foundation has continued supporting
the National Students Haiku Contest (hosted by Japan Students Haiku
Association) which has been held annually since 1970.
◆ 16th Haiku Koshien
The Foundation, as a supporter, provided prizes for the “Haiku Koshien”,
(a national haiku tournament for high school students – the name Koshien
refers to the stadium hosting the annual high school baseball tournament)
held every August since 1977 in the city of Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture.
◆ 18th Kumamoto Kusamakura International Haiku Contest
This international haiku contest was started in 1996 in Kumamoto, in
commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Soseki Natsume’s visit to the
city. The Foundation has been a supporter of this contest, providing the JAL
Foundation Award in its junior division.
◆ 2nd Japan-Russia Haiku Contest
As a part of cultural exchanges between the two countries, the second
Japan-Russia Haiku Contest was held in the cities of Akita and Vladivostok
the same as the first contest. The Foundation continues to support the
contest and provided the JAL Foundation Award.

Atmospheric Observation Project
JAL 財団は、地球温暖化をもたらす大気変動のメカニズム解明のた

の開発も成り、関係者の尽力の結果、

CONTRAIL PROJECT 2013年度の活動

その成果は広く国内外から評価され、観測
データは世界中の研究者に活用されている。
この取り組みが開始された20 年前は、
ようやく環境に関する世界
的な議論が始まったばかりの頃であったが、
その後、
プロジェクトは、
観測体制を日々充実させながら成長してきた。

With the establishment of JAL Foundation in 1990, the
Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Airlines and JAL Foundation
jointly developed ASE (Automatic Air Sampling Equipment) with the
support of the Ministry of Transportation (currently the Ministry of
Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism), installed them on
classic Boeing 747 aircraft, and since 1993 have been engaged in
observation and analysis of atmospheric air during commercial flights
between Japan and Australia on a twice-a-month basis.
In 2005, when Japan Airlines’ classic Boeing 747 aircraft were
retired, it became necessary to build a new observation framework.
In the meantime, improvement on the conventional ASE and
development of CME (Continuous Automatic CO 2 Measuring
Equipment) were completed at the request of researchers. Through
the efforts of many parties involved toward their verification and
approval, the improved ASE and the newly developed CME were
installed on both Boeing 747-400 and 777-200 aircraft. This
new observation system was named the CONTRAIL PROJECT
(Comprehensive Observation Network for Trace gases by Airliner
Project), and it has added on to existing observation data while
enabling the collection of more advanced and reliable data.
For the purpose of obtaining advice on the observation project
from leading experts in academia, industry, and government, the
“Committee on Promoting the Earth Environment Observation by
Commercial Flights” was formed in 2007. JAL Foundation has been
serving as the Committee’s secretariat. The Committee meeting
to review FY2013 activities was held on March 27, 2014, where
constructive advice was provided by members specializing in different
fields.

continuously changed its system as necessary and marked its 20 th
anniversary in March 2013. Such a long-term scheme of atmospheric
observation using aircraft has no parallel in the world and findings
have been highly evaluated and its observation data have been widely
utilized by researchers worldwide.

The first time in Japan that atmospheric air was collected by
commercial aircraft for analysis was in 1979, when Tohoku University
began monthly observation of greenhouse gases on flights between
Sendai and Fukuoka with the cooperation of Toa Domestic Airlines
(currently Japan Airlines). In 1984, they conducted observation and
analysis of atmospheric air collected on Tokyo-Sydney and TokyoAnchorage flights with the cooperation of Japan Airlines.

There are many aspects to the issues surrounding our environment
today, including global warming, deterioration of the ozone layer, acid
rain, deforestation, and desertification. The project’s observation
of earth’s atmosphere targets the global warming issue, which is
capturing ever growing social interest. This project’s primary aim is
to monitor extensively and frequently the atmospheric concentration
of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), which is closely
linked to human activities ever since the industrial revolution, and to
collect basic data to help clarify the mechanism of the fluctuation and
circulation of such gases in the atmosphere.
History
行ったのは、東北大学であり、1979 年に当時の東亜国内航空（現
在の日本航空）の協力により、仙台＝福岡間において、月1 回の温

Aviation Day-Study Tours to Major Airports for Junior High School Students
「空の日」中学生主要空港派遣事業
JAL 財団は、国土交通省と航空や空港に関する会社などが一体
となって設立している「空の日」・「空の旬間」実行委員会より委嘱
を受け、
「空の日」中学生主要空港派遣事業の企画・運営にあたっ
ている。この事業は
「空の日」
（9 月 20 日）
の記念行事の一環として、
次世代を担う中学生に航空や空港について理解と関心を深めても
らい、視野の広い若者を育成することを目的としている。1994 年
に開始され、2013 年までの派遣中学生は累計 397 名に達した。
8/2（金）
ＡＮＡベーカーズフィールド乗員訓練所では、駐機している訓練機
の操縦席で説明を受けたり、フライトシミュレ－タ－にて航空機操縦
の模擬体験をしたり、訓練所の方から航空機についての分かりやす
い説明を受けたりして、航空機に対する知識を深めることができた。
8/3（土）
帰国日。ロサンゼルス空港にて、搭乗予定の NH005 便の運航乗
海外派遣事業 ーカナダ・アメリカ
2013 年度海外中学生派遣事業には、成田空港周辺の中学校
より 6 名の中学生が参加。7 月 30 日から 8 月 4 日までの 4 泊 6
日で、カナダのバンクーバー、米国西海岸のシアトル、ロサンゼル
スを訪問した。
務員・客室乗務員と対面し、運航乗務員のブリーフィング、運航乗
務員と客室乗務員とのブリーフィングをオブザーブした。また、機内
では、ギャレーにて客室乗務員からその仕事について話を聞いた。
飛行機を安全に運航させる為に、たくさんの方がいろいろな仕事をし
ていることを身近で学び、空港と航空会社の役割などを学習した。

7/30（火）
研修への出発に先立ち、日本を代表する空の表玄関である成田
国際空港を知るために、一般旅客の立ち入りが制限されている空港
制限区域で、納品されたばかりのボーイング７８７機や出発前の飛行
機の側で準備作業を見学したり、離発着する航空機を滑走路脇から
見学。カナダ・バンクーバーへ向うＪＬ018 便機内では、客室乗務
員に質問をして、その仕事について学習した。
バンクーバー空港では、管制塔に入り、航空機の離発着の様子や
管制業務を見学したほか、その他の空港施設も見学した。
陸路国境を越えてカナダからアメリカへ入国するにあたり、厳しい
入国審査・税関審査を経験した。シアトルの近郊エバレット市にある
世界最大の航空機製造会社であるボーイング社のエバレット工場を
訪問し、今後の主力機となることが想定され、日本でも多くの導入が
短い滞在ながらも、厳しい入国審査などを体験し、また、国籍の
異なる方や現地学生と交流することを通して、カナダ・米国の文化や
生活様式に対する理解も深めることができた。
今回の研修を通じて中学生達が深く感銘を受けた点は、航空や空
港の世界には、様々な仕事があり、安全で快適な空の旅は、機械
やシステムだけでなく、そこで働く多くの人々によって支えられていると
いうことであった。このように今回の研修は、参加学生が航空や空
港に対する理解を深め、グロ－バルな視野を養う一歩となるとともに、
研修後、参加者のレポ－トや研修写真を収録した「研修レポート」
を発行し、JAL 財団のホームページに掲載している。

予定されている最新鋭のジェット機 B787 を間近で見学した。そして
航空機の胴体そのものが組み立てられている米国の工場の広大さを
実感するとともに、航空機 1 機の製造にはさまざまな部品や工程があ
り、そして多くの人々が携わっていることや日本の製品が多く使用され
ていることを学んだ。その後、現地のカミアックハイスク－ルの生徒た
ちと交流し、一緒に「Future　of　Flight」航空博物館を見学したり、
高校を訪問したり、ショッピングモール散策をしながら親交を深めた。
8/1（木）
シアトルからロサンゼルスへＡＡ 7018 便で移動。ロサンゼルス空港
に到着後すぐに、空港内にある機内食工場にてエグゼクティブクラス
の機内食を試食後、機内食がどのような工程で作られるのか、実際
に調理される工程を見学した。

Overseas Study Tour –Canada and USA
The 2013 study tours for junior high school students took place
from July 30 to August 4. Six students from junior high schools in
the neighborhood of Narita International Airport spent four nights in
Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle and San Francisco, U.S.A.
Program Duration: Tuesday, July 30 – Sunday, August 4

7/31（水）
JAL Foundation conducts Aviation Day Study Tours to major
airports for junior high school students at the request of the
Aviation Day and Aviation Week Planning Committee, comprised
of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, airlines, and
airport-related organizations. As part of the events celebrating
Aviation Day (September 20), the study tours aim to enhance
the students’ understanding of aviation and airports and broaden
their outlook for the future. Since its inauguration in 1994, a total
of 397 students have taken part in the program till 2013.

July 30 (Tue.)
Before departing for the study tour, in order to learn firsthand
about Narita International Airport, a key air gateway to Japan,
the students were given access to restricted areas of the airport
where they witnessed a Boeing 787 aircraft which was just
delivered from the U.S., observed preparations of an aircraft
before takeoff and watched departures and arrivals standing
beside the runway. On board flight JL018 to Vancouver,
Canada, the students had a question/answer session with cabin
attendants to learn about their duties. At Vancouver International
Airport, they visited the control tower where they observed
departures and arrivals, air control operations, and other airport
facilities.
July 31 (Wed.)
When entering the U.S. overland from Canada, they experienced
stringent passport control and customs clearance procedures. After
arriving in Seattle, they visited the nearby Everett plant of the Boeing
Company, the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer, and were treated to
close-up views of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing’s newest jetliner
expected to be introduced to Japan in large numbers to become the
main aircraft of airline fleets. The students were amazed at the vastness
of the fuselage assembly plant, and learned that an airplane requires a
significant number of parts and processes as well as the involvement
of many individuals working as a team. They also learned that a
significant number of Japanese-made products are used in the aircraft
manufacturing process. Afterwards, they were joined by students from
the nearby Kamiak High School and deepened exchanges through visits
to their school and the Future of Flight Aviation Museum as well as
nearby shopping malls.

The students flew to Los Angeles aboard Flight AA7018. Upon
arrival at Los Angeles International Airport, they were given a
chance to taste Executive Class meals and to witness the in-flight
meal preparation process firsthand at the production facilities
located in the airport.
Aug. 2 (Fri.)
At All Nippon Airways’ Bakersfield flight crew training center,
the participants were given a chance to not only receive
explanations while seated in the cockpit of the training aircraft
but also to experience piloting aircraft on flight simulators. They
were also able to expand their knowledge of aircraft through a
presentation by an official of the training center.

At Los Angeles International Airport, before leaving for Japan,
the students met with the flight crew and cabin attendants
of their flight NH005, and observed their pre-flight briefing.
After boarding the aircraft, they learned from cabin attendants
in the galley about their duties on the plane. Through such
observations, the students learned that many people are
performing various kinds of tasks for the safe operation of
aircraft, and also gained insight into the importance of the roles
played by airports and airline companies.

The students arrived safely at Narita International Airport.
Through this short visit, the participating students were able to
enhance their understanding of Canadian and American culture
and lifestyle by experiencing stringent immigration controls
and exchanges with people of different nationalities and local
students.
One of the points the students were deeply impressed with
through this study tour is the fact that there are various kinds
of work in the world of aviation and airports and that safe
and comfortable air travel is supported not only by high-tech
machinery or systems but also by many people from a wide
range of specialties working as a team. Thus, the tour helped
the participants in deepening their understanding of aviation and
airports as well as in widening their global perspective and also
provided them with an opportunity to start thinking deeply about
their future.
A “Study Tour Report” containing all participants’ reports and
photos is compiled and posted on the JAL Foundation website.

地球人育成プログラム
Program for Fostering Globally Minded Citizens
航空文明社会において地球規模で考え行動できる「地球人」
の育成を目的として、第１線で活躍する講師による「地球人講座」
の開催やインタ－ンシップ事業をはじめとする国際相互理解促進に
資する事業に取り組んでいる。

【外国人学生に対する研修プログラム】
JAL 財団では、国際交流事業の一環として、海外の大学で日本
語や日本文化を学んでいる大学生を研修生として受け入れて支援
している。1990 年からこれまで、シドニ－、北京、上海、ソウル
から計 33 名の研修生を受け入れてきた。
2013 年度は、北京外国語大学の大学生 1 名を受け入れた。
研修生は、JAL 財団のスタッフとして日本での仕事を実体験し、日
本語能力を向上させ、日本社会に対する理解を深めるとともに、Ｊ
ＡＬグル－プボランティア活動や 2013 年ＪＡＬスカラシッププログラ
JAL 財団では、地球規模で考え行動できる青少年の育成を目的
として、2003 年から第一線で活躍する講師による「地球人講座」
と称する講座を各地で開催しており、17 回目となる今回は、「地球
人」として 15 か国の方々と宇宙で活躍している古川宇宙飛行士に
講演をお願いした。
古川宇宙飛行士は、
「君も宇宙へ行こう！」という講演タイトルで、
スペースワールド・ギャラクシーホールの日本最大の迫力あるスクリー
ンで、宇宙への出発時の様子、165 日間長期滞在された ISS で
の実験や生活の様子、帰還時の様子を映し出した後、宇宙飛行
士の仕事、ソユーズ宇宙船、国際宇宙ステーション、「きぼう」日
本実験棟、
「こうのとり」貨物船、JAXA 宇宙飛行士、宇宙旅行等、
ひとつひとつのテーマを丁寧に詳しくお話しくださった。
最後の質問コーナーでは、応じきれないほどたくさんの子ども達
が、手を挙げて質問をした。
「ソユーズとスペースシャトルの違いは？」
「宇宙で一番行きたい惑星は？」「宇宙で一番困った事は」「宇
宙食で思ったよりまずかった物は何？」「宇宙飛行士として一番大
切な事は？」などたくさんの質問に対し、子どもたちの目線でわかり
やすく回答し、質問した子ども達ひとりひとりと笑顔で握手する古川
さんの優しく温かい姿勢は、偉大な遠い存在だった宇宙飛行士を
身近に感じ、将来への夢を育ませることとなった。
JAXA宇宙飛行士 古川 聡氏　略歴
1964 年 神 奈 川県 生まれ。2011 年6 月から第28 次/ 第29 次
長 期滞在クルーのフライトエンジニアとして国際宇宙ステー
ション（ISS）に日本人宇宙 飛 行 士として最 長 の165 日間 連
続 滞 在し、
「 きぼう」での実 験 やISS の 維 持 管 理を行ったほ
か、最後のスペースシャトルミッションとなったSTS-135 ミッ
ションの支援などを実施した。

ムの運営補助業務を担当し、参加者とも積極的に交流を行い、国
際理解に努めた。その他、日本に関する論文を作成し、その論文
は、多くの方々の国際理解促進に役立てるため、日本語、中国語
の２ケ国語で、JAL 財団のホームページ上に公開した。

東日本鉄道文化財団研修生受け入れ事業
JAL 財団では、東日本鉄道文化財団と相互に研修プログラム
の提供を行う事業提携を行っており、2007 年度より、日本航空
の協力のもと、東日本鉄道文化財団で研修を行っているベトナム、
モンゴル等のアジア諸国の鉄道会社の若手社員に対して、主に
安全をテ－マとする研修プログラムを提供している。安全は運輸
事業に携わるものにとって共通の命題であるが、航空会社の安全
に関する取り組みの現場を実際に見学することにより、安全に対
する意識の向上を図ることを目的としている。2013 年度は、4 カ
国から 8 名の研修生（出身国 : インドネシア・ベトナム・モンゴル・
タイ）
を受け入れ、2013 年度までの受入数は累計 58 名に達した。

With the aim of fostering globally minded citizens who can think and
act on a global level in this “Global Age of Aviation”, JAL Foundation has
been engaged in activities geared toward enhancing international mutual
understanding, including activities such as Lectures for Globally Minded
Citizens given by lecturers who are active in their respective fields and an
international internship program.
Lectures for Globally Minded Citizens in
Kitakyushu to mark the 50th anniversary of the
municipalization of the City of Kitakyushu
On December 23, 2013, in the Galaxy Hall of SPACE WORLD in
Kitakyushu City, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut
Dr. Satoshi Furukawa gave a lecture under the title of “Space is inviting
you” for approximately 470 children and their parents. The event was
sponsored by JAL Foundation and backed up by Kitakyushu City, the city
of Kitakyushu Board of Education, SPACE WORLD, Nishinippon Shimbun ,
a local newspaper, Kitakyushu Airport Promotion Conference and JAL
Express.
This was the 17th session since JAL Foundation started this program in
2003, and we invited as a lecturer Dr. Satoshi Furukawa, a truly globally
minded citizen, who worked in the International Space Station for 165
days with people from 15 different countries of the world.
Dr. Furukawa spoke about “Space is inviting you” showing, on
Japan’s largest screen at the SPACE WORLD Galaxy Hall, video
pictures of his launch to space, his experiments and daily activities in
the International Space Station where he stayed for 165 days and his
landing on earth. He also spoke on various topics including the work
of astronauts, the Russian space ship Soyuz, the ISS (International
Space Station), Japanese experiment module “Kibo”, H-II Transfer
Vehicle “KONOTORI”, JAXA and its astronauts, and future outer
space travel.
During the question and answer session toward the end of the event,
many children asked various kinds of questions; “What are the differences
between the Soyuz and space shuttles?” “Which planet would you want
to go most?” “What was the biggest problem in the space?” “What foods
have you found less tasty than expected?” “What is the most important
thing for an astronaut?” Dr. Furukawa answered each question from a
child’s perspective in an easy-to-understand manner, shaking hands with
each child who asked questions. His gentle and warm manner made the
children feel close to an astronaut who was a remote figure to them, and
inspired their imagination for the future.
Dr. Satoshi Furukawa was born in 1964 in Kanagawa Prefecture. From
June to November 2011, he stayed on the International Space Station
(ISS) for 165 days, the longest period for a Japanese astronaut, as a
flight engineer for the extensive Expedition 28th /29th missions. His duty
included experiments in “Kibo” and maintenance of the ISS. He also
supported STS-135, the 135th and final mission of the American Space
Shuttle program. (as of December 2013)
Internship Activity
【Understanding Japan - Study Program for International Students】
As part of its international exchange programs, JAL Foundation has
been hosting international students who are studying the Japanese
language and culture in colleges and universities overseas. Since 1990,
we have hosted a total of 33 trainees from Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai, and
Seoul.
In 2013, the Foundation hosted one student from Beijing Foreign
Studies University. As a staff member of the Foundation, the trainee
gained experience in a working environment, made progress with
her Japanese language proficiency and deepened her understanding
of Japan. She also participated in volunteer activities of JAL Group
companies and the 2013 JAL Scholarship Program in which she actively
engaged in exchanges with foreign participants and deepened her
international understanding.
The trainee has completed a paper on Japan which is uploaded in both
Japanese and Chinese languages on JAL Foundation’s website in hopes
of promoting international understanding.

Traineeship Program by East Japan
Railway Culture Foundation
JAL Foundation has an agreement with East Japan Railway Culture
Foundation to provide mutual support to their respective study programs.
Since 2007, with cooperation from Japan Airlines, the Foundation
has been conducting study sessions for young employees of railway
companies from Vietnam, Mongolia, and other Asian nations as a part
of the traineeship program provided by East Japan Railway Culture
Foundation, with a focus on safety. Safety is of paramount importance to
all who are engaged in the transport business, and this program aims to
foster safety awareness of the participants by witnessing how an airline
company deals with safety matters day-to-day. In 2013, there were 8
participants in the program from Indonesia, Vietnam, Mongolia and
Thailand. Since its start in 2007, a total of 58 trainees have taken part in
the program till 2013.

in the upper troposphere as part of its company projects aiming to be environmentally aware.
The Environmental Observation and Monitoring Project received the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Environmental Technology
Award, under the auspices of Nihon Keizai Shimbun, for remarkable results achieved in investigation, research and
preventative measure application towards environmental issues.
The Japan Airlines Research and Development Department received a Certificate of Commendation from the Director of
the Meteorological Agency for contributions to the development of installable meteorological testing equipment and the
meteorological field.
Japan Airlines received the Flight International Company Award.

Modification of first Boeing 777-200 aircraft was completed.
Based on the results of Boeing 777 observations, the 7th Committee on Promoting the Observation to Investigate Atmospheric
Composition by Scheduled Flights (final meeting) was formed.
Modification of No. 2 and No. 3 Boeing 777's was completed, and it became possible to install the measuring equipment on the
first aircraft.
The New Atmospheric Observation Project was presented on NHK's 'Good morning Japan'.
The 1st Subcommittee of Data Application for Atmospheric Observation by Airline was established.
A committee senior to the above-mentioned one, the 1st meeting of the Committee on Promoting the Earth Environment
Observation by Scheduled Flights (main committee), was formed. Its purpose is to promote the effective use of observation
data and ensure maintenance, management and development of the observation platform.
JAMCO Corporation received a Certificate of Commendation from the Chairman of Japan Aeronautical Engineers' Association
for the development of the new environmental observation and monitoring's equipment.
Professor Nakazawa of Tohoku University, Chairman of the Committee on Promoting the Earth Environment Observation by
Scheduled Flights was presented the Shimazu Award from Shimazu Science and Technology Foundation.
Dr. Sawa of Meteorological Research Institute received a Certificate of Commendation from the Director of the Meteorological
Research Institute for the development of observation equipment and establishment of analysis methods for tne new
observation program.
The 2nd meeting of the Committee on Promoting the Earth Environment Observation by Scheduled Flights was held.
A paper on the CONTRAIL Project appears in 'J. Atmos. Oceanic. Technol.' and 'J. Geophys. Res.'
Dr. Machida of National Institute of Environmental Studies received the NIES Award for public relations about environmental
issues and contribution to the development of the institute's activities.
The 3rd meeting of the Committee on Promoting the Earth Environment Observation by Scheduled Flights was held.
A patent application made in October 2007 for ASE (Automatic Air Sampling Equipment) and CME (Continuous CO2 Measuring
Equipment) was published in Japanese Published Unexamined Patent Applications.
Dr. Takakiyo Nakazawa Professor of Tohoku University and Chairman of the Committee on Promoting the Earth Environment
Observation by Scheduled Flights was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal for his long-term achievements in enhancing the
understanding of the mechanism of global warming caused by greenhouse gases.
The number of atmospheric observations under the CONTRAIL Project has exceeded 5,000.
