Legal Workshop in Japanese

here in Edmonton will hold a legal workshop at the
EJCA Centre as follows:

Japan recently decided to join the Hague Convention on
the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. There
will be some discussion regarding the Hague Convention.

2013 Annual General Meeting of the National
Association of Japanese-Canadians:
Future Direction of NAJC

As a delegate of the EJCA, I had an opportunity to
attend the 2013 Annual General Meeting of the
National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC)
in Toronto from September 20 to 22, 2013. This was
the third time I attended the NAJC AGM.
The NAJC was formed in 1947 and successfully
reached the Redress Settlement in 1988 on behalf of
all Japanese Canadians who suffered from internment
during and after World War II. Its website states that
“NAJC focuses on human rights and community
development.”
Through my attendance at three NAJC AGMs, I feel
that NAJC has been seeking new directions and
purposes for its existence.
While NAJC was negotiating the Redress Settlement,
many other communities supported NAJC’s activities,
including First Nations and Ukrainian Canadians. That
history makes NAJC sensitive to not only Japanese
Canadian human rights but also to human right issues
in general. For example, its current website posts
articles titled “Charter of Quebec Values”. They also
supported the Idle No More movement where
Aboriginal peoples protested a new bill proposed by
the Harper government.
NAJC also expressed an interest in community
development by hosting cultural events and reaching
out to new Japanese immigrants. Local organizations,
like EJCA, have been very active in organizing cultural
events. However, it may be difficult for NAJC to
organize similar events because it does not have
strong ties with grass root communities unlike local
Japanese-Canadian organizations. It will be interesting
to see how NAJC is planning to achieve this goal.
Reaching out to new immigrants seems to be a
common challenge throughout local organizations
including EJCA.
One thing I suggested to them was to make changes
to their website. EJCA began a Japanese website in
the hope that our website would be easier to find for
people whose first language is Japanese. Although
NAJC has some limited Japanese web pages, users
are yet unable to go from the English home page to
Japanese pages. Nowadays, most of us search
information online. It is important to make our
information on Internet easily accessible for people
who do not know about our existence.
Attending the AGM made me think not only about the
NAJC’s future but also the EJCA’s future. How can we
improve our services to Japanese Canadians,
Japanese immigrants, and those who are interested in
Japanese culture? How can we reach newcomers
from Japan. If you have any suggestions for NAJC or
EJCA, please share them with us.
２０１３年度カナダ日系人協会年次総会：NAJC のこれから

EJCA の代表として９月２０日から２３日にトロントで開催され
たカナダ日系人協会（NAJC）の年次総会（AGM）に参加してき
ました。NAJC の AGM に参加するのはこれで三度目です。
NAJC は第二次世界大戦で強制収容された日系カナダ人の歴史を
正す（リドレス、Redress）ようにカナダ政府と話し合うため
に 1947 年に発足し、1988 年にリドレス合意の達成に成功しま
した。NAJC のウェブサイトでは、「NAJC は人権とコミュニテ
ィーの発展に焦点を当てている」とあります。三度の AGM 参加
を通じ、NAJC は新たな方向と目的を模索しているな、と感じま
した。
リドレス合意にいたる話し合いの際、多くの他のコミュニティ
ー（例えばファースト・ネーションやウクライナ系カナダ人）
が NAJC の活動に寄与しました。そのため、NAJC は日系カナダ
人の人権問題だけでなく、一般的な人権問題に関心をみせてい
ます。例えば、いまの NAJC のウェブサイトは “Charter of
Quebec Values” について記事を載せていますし、ハーパー政
府が提案した一法案に反対するアボリジナルの人々による Idle
No More 運動の支援います。
コミュニティー発展に関しては、文化的なイベントを開催した
いと思っているようです。EJCA も含め、多くの地元に根付いた
コミュニティーはとても盛んに文化的なイベントを開催してい
ます。しかし、NAJC は地域とのつながりが薄いため、似たよう
なイベントを開催するのは難しいのではないかと思います。ど
のようにこの点を解決するつもりなのか、興味深いところです。
日本からの新移民との繋がりを強めるのも、NAJC の新しい関心
のひとつのようです。これには EJCA も含め、多くの地元団体
が面している問題です。私は NAJC のウェブサイトを変えては
どうか、と提案しました。EJCA は最近、日本語のウェブサイト
を設けました。日本語のウェブサイトも設けることで、日本語
が母国語の人にも我々のウェブサイトがなじみやすくなるので
はないか、と思ったからです。NAJC のウェブサイトも日本語の
ページがあるのですが、まだ限られていて、英語のホームペー
ジから日本語のページに切り替えるシステムがありません。最
近は多くの人がインターネットで情報を探します。我々の存在
を知らない人でもインターネット上で簡単に見つけられるよう
にするのは大切なことです。
NAJC の AGM に参加することで、NAJC の将来だけでなく、EJCA
の将来についても考えさせられました。日系カナダ人、日本人
移民、そして国籍に係わらず日本文化に興味のある人々に対し、
我々のサービスをどのように向上できるのか。もし NAJC、もし
くは EJCA に提案がありましたらお知らせください。

NAJC received a letter from Prime Minister on the 25th anniversary of the Redress settlement.
カナダ日系人協会（NAJC）は年次総会のプログラムの一つとして、戦時補償成立 25 周年記念祝賀会を行いました。祝賀会へのお祝いの
手紙がカナダ首相ステファン・ハーパー氏より送られました。
「カナダ政府は 1941 年に、カナダの西部海岸部に住んでいた日本人の血を引いたカナダ人 2 万 2 千人を、敵国人と決め付けました。政府は
男性をワークキャンプに送り、家族を分離し、日本語の新聞を廃刊し、夜間外出を制限し、所有物を押収し持ち主の許可なく売り払いました。
これらの行為は寛大で多様性を尊重するはずのカナダに汚点を残しました。アート・ミキ氏を代表とするカナダ日系人協会（NAJC）は、カナダ
政府に対して、これらの不正が起こった事を謝罪し、補償を求める活動を行いました。そして 1988 年 9 月 22 日に戦時補償の同意が成立し
ました。この重要な同意によって、個人への賠償が払われ、人権基金が設立され、戦時特別法が廃止され緊急事態特別法が設定されました。
ここに、日系人がカナダにおいて果たしている重要な貢献と、カナダ日系人会が真剣に人権問題に取り組んでいることを認識いたします。皆
様が調和と平等を重んじる国家を創っていくことへ貢献している事をどうぞ誇りにしてください。カナダにとって重要なこの 25 周年の祝賀に
当たって心よりお祝いいたします。」

The 2013 Annual General Meeting of the Edmonton
Japanese Community Association

Highlights
On October 20, 2013, the 2013 Annual General Meeting
of EJCA was held at the Argyle-EJCA Centre in
Edmonton.
President Stephanie Bozzer welcomed forty EJCA
members to this year’s AGM and highlighted this past
year’s main projects. The Japanese Canadian History
Project is nearing the completion of Phase II and
continues to accept surveys from those living in the
greater Edmonton area. The EJCA Board of Directors
decided that EJCA made a financial contribution to the
Japan Today program when the Consulate-General of
Japan in Calgary cut its funding support to the program
earlier this year. Many thanks were given to many
volunteers from EJCA’s clubs who spent a day helping
with the annual Cleaning Bee, led by Facility Manager,
John Priegert. EJCA’s Pavilion at the annual Heritage
Festival continues to be a popular attraction and was
another huge success. Many thanks go out to the
hundreds of volunteers who continue to showcase
Japanese culture at this three-day event.

２０１３年度エドモンントン日本コミュニティー協会年次総会の報告

２０１３年１０月２０日にアーガイル・ＥＪＣＡ会館で２０１３年度エドモン
ントン日本コミュニティー協会の年次総会が開かれました。
総会のハイライト
出席した４０名の会員を前にステファニー・ボザー会長がこの一年の
ＥＪＣＡの主要な活動を報告しました。ＥＪＣＡ歴史プロジェクトは第二
段階が終了間際です。第 3 段階のエドモントン地区在住の日系人、
日本人からの調査票はまだ受け付けています。まだ調査票を提出し
ていない方はＥＪＣＡセンターまでお届けください。ジャパン・トゥディ
プログラムへの日本政府からの補助金が 2013 年 4 月で打ち切られ
たので、ＥＪＣＡはプログラムの継続のために補助金を出すことに決
定しました。今春は昨年に続き会員がたくさん集まってセンターの外
と中をくまなく大掃除をしました。これでまた一年間気持ちよくセンタ
ーが使えます。今年のヘリテージ祭りは三日間とも晴天に恵まれ、
広大なホーリロックパークが人で埋まるほどの盛況でした。日本館も
大忙しでした。ＥＪＣＡヘリテージ・フェスティバル委員会のジョン・プリ
ガートをはじめとして大勢のボランティアが参加しました。
総会では今年７７才の誕生日を迎えたロン・オークラとデービッド・マ
チダ（リズ・マチダさんが代りに出席）さんをお祝いし、花束を贈呈し
ました。

EJCA Board for 2 terms (4 years), her final year as
Secretary. Her many contributions to the EJCA and the
Board of Directors are very much appreciated and she
will certainly be missed. We wish her well as she pursues
other interests.
Discussons on Heritage Festival and Omatsuri
The Board presented a discussion paper to receive
feedback and comments from the membership regarding
the EJCA’s participation in the Heritage Festival and/or
the creation of a new Japanese Festival (i.e. Omatsuri).
The Board was seeking input so that further discussion
can occur to consider the following scenarios:
a. Continue the current Heritage Festival in its
current format;

ヘリテージ・フェスティバルとお祭りのついての討論
役員会はＥＪＣＡのヘリテージ・フェスティバル参加の継続、新しいＥ
ＪＣＡの活動、お祭り、の開催についてのいろいろな選択の比較をま
とまた報告書を作成して討論の材料として配布しました。報告書は
次の三つの選択を提出しています。
a. 現在同様にヘリテージ・フェスティバルに参加する。
b. ヘリテージ・フェスティバルへの参加を止める。 (6 ページヘ)

Festival AND create EJCA’s own festival.
The Board heard from a number of members and
discussion was lively. Before any decision is made,
further input from all EJCA groups will be solicited. One
of the main concerns was the potential for volunteer burnout and ensuring a new generation of volunteer festival
planners is ready to provide leadership. It was suggested
that a mentorship program be considered, whereby
veteran volunteers would train interested and committed
younger members to assume leadership positions so that
the current Heritage Festival is not jeopardized. The
Board will continue to accept input from its members
before any decisions are made.

AGM Dinner and the 25 Anniversary of the Redress
Settlement
In September 1988, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney stood
in the House of Commons and apologized to the
Japanese Canadian community for their wrongful
confiscation of property and internment during WW II. Mr.
Art Miki, Chair of the NAJC Redress Committee, would
accept nothing less from the government than individual
compensation for those directly interned and the
establishment of a community fund.
At the 2013 AGM, we remembered this historic event in
Canadian history. The EJCA invited Dr. Henry Shimizu to
be the guest speaker after the AGM banquet. To

remember the 25 Anniversary, the National Association
of Japanese Canadians created a lapel pin and photo
frame, along with a special coffee to mark the event.
These are available for sale from EJCA.
While Dr. Shimizu was not directly involved in the
negotiations for redress, he chaired the Foundation which
provided grant monies to Japanese Canadian
communities to help fund, among other things, Japanese
cultural centres. The EJCA received $250,000 from this
fund to support the renovations and additions to the
Argyll Community Centre which EJCA currently shares.
Showing of a Movie, “A Sorry State”
The EJCA received the rights to show a film, A Sorry
State, by Mitch Miyagawa. The film documented Mitch’s
personal journey into his past and his insights into having
a father of Japanese ancestry, a mother of European
ancestry, a stepfather of Chinese ancestry, and a
stepmother of aboriginal ancestry. The theme of the film
focused on being part of a family who received three
public apologies from Canadian Prime Ministers: Brian
Mulroney to the Japanese Canadians for the internment;
Stephen Harper to Chinese Canadian community for the
head-tax; and Stephen Harper to the First Nations
community for residential schools. It is a personal and
captivating story about what it means to be Canadian, yet
subject to discrimination and racism because of your
ancestry and how the Canadian government has tried to
right a wrong through public apologies.

c.ヘリテージ・フェスティバルへの参加を小規模にして、ＥＪＣ
Ａ独自のお祭りをする。
討論が弾みましたが、役員会で最終決定をする前に会員からの意
見を広く聞く予定です。意見をお持ちの方はどうぞ役員の一人にご
連絡ください。現在の問題点の一つはＥＪＣＡのヘリテージ・フェステ
ィバルを企画して中心になって活動するＥＪＣフェスティバル会のメン
バーの「燃え尽き症候群」です。数年間中心になって活動すると疲
れて、継続することが難しくなります。新しいメンバーのバトンタッチ
してＥＪＣＡフェスティバル委員会を元気に続けていけるようにするの
が急務です。現在のメンバーが新しいメンバーを訓練してアドバイス
できるようにする、などいろいろなアイデアが出てきました。この件に
関してもアイデアをお持ちのかたは役員にお伝えください。
配布し、日系カナダ人強制収容されたキャンプの写真の展示を行い
ました。
また総会ではＮＡＪＣが２５周年を記念して作成したバッジを会員に
年次総会晩餐会とリドレス終了２５周年記念行事
１９８８年にブライアン・マルルーニ首相がカナダ国家の代表として第
二次世界大戦中の日系カナダ人に対する処置に正式に謝罪して団
体と個人補償を決定してから今年は２５年になります。今年の年次
総会では２５周年を記念して特別な行事を二つ企画しました。一つ
はリドレスが決着した後に連邦政府が
設立したカナダ日系人協会リドレス基
金の理事長を務めたヘンリー・シミズ
博士を招待して講演をしてもらいまし
た。シミズ博士はリドレス基金をもとに
カナダ全土の日系社会を再構築する
ことに役立つ公的なプロジェクトへの
資金援助活動を先頭にたって遂行しま
した。ＥＪＣＡもリドレス基金からの援助
金２５万ドルを基礎にして募金活動を
行い、アーガイル・コミュニティーリーグ
と共同で現在の会館を完成しました。
映画「謝罪する国家」の上映
二つ目は、ミッチ・ミヤギシマ制作の映画「謝罪する国家」を晩餐会
のあとで上映しました。映画はミッチ・ミヤギシマ自信の経験をまとめ
た記録映画です。ミッチ・ミヤギシマは父親が日系人、母親がヨーロ
ッパ系、義理の父親が中国系、義理の母親がカナダ・アブオリジナ
ルという環境に育ち、このため、カナダ国家の正式謝罪に三回関係
します。一つ目はブライアン・マルルーニ首相の日系カナダ人への
謝罪、二つ目はステファン・ハーパー首相による中国系カナダ人へ
の人頭税にかんする謝罪、三つ目はステファン・ハーパー首相によ
るファースト・ネーションズの人達にたいするレジデンシャル・スクー
ルに関する謝罪です。カナダ人であるにもかかわらず受けた人種差
別の経験の中で考えたカナダ人であることの意味とカナダ国家がこ
れらの差別をただすための謝罪の歴史とその個人的な経験を描い
た作品です。

Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation
日本外務大臣表彰状の受賞式

Every year, Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendations
are awarded to persons or organizations who have
provided exceptional and distinguished services in the
promotion of mutual understanding, friendship and
goodwill between their countries and Japan. The
recipients of the award are formally recognised for their
outstanding achievements in economic and technical
cooperation, information and cultural activities as well as
other activities to enhance international relations. This
year, the commendation was awarded to 98 individuals
and 31 groups around the world.
デービッド・ミューラー
毎年、日本の外務大臣は外国と日本の相互理解に貢献した人と団
体を表彰します。今年は世界で９８人の個人と３１の団体に感謝の
表彰状を贈呈しました。この中の一人にエドモントンの大木早苗さん
が選ばれました。大木早苗さんは１９７７年の設立以来メトロ・エドモ
ントン・ジャパニーズ・コミュニティー・スクールで教師、校長として 24
年間貢献しました。またＥＪＣＡのジャパン・トゥデイ・プログラムとエク
スプロアー・ジャパン・プログラムでも大切な役割をはたしてきました。
この二つのプログラムにはグレード８とグレード１０の生徒に日本の
文化を紹介するもので、合わせて毎年１，８００人以上の生徒が参
加しています。また大木早苗さんはＥＪＣＡ役員会のメンバーとしてＥ
ＪＣＡ歴史プロジェクト委員会に参加したり、多くの場で、カナダ人一
般に日本文化を紹介したり、日本語の学習の場を作ることに努力し
ています。
In recognition of her dedication to the promotion of
mutual understanding between Japan and Canada,
Sanae Ohki, has received the 2013 Foreign Minister’s
Commendation. Sanae’s dedication to the promotion of
Japanese culture has been outstanding. As one of the
founding members of the Metro Edmonton Japanese
Community School (MEJCS) in 1977, she served the
school for 24 years as both teacher and principal (and
continues to support it informally). Sanae has also been
instrumental in the development and success of the
Japan Today program and Explore Japan program.
These two programs promote Japanese culture grade 8
and grade 10 students in the greater Edmonton area.
Annual, over 1,800 students participate in these two
programs and get a firsthand experience of Japanese art,
culture and society. Finally, Sanae has been an active
member of the Edmonton Japanese Community
Association (EJCA) where her efforts as Member of the
Board, history project member, and many other roles
have been invaluable to the success of the organization
and services it provides.
On October 28, 2013 I had the honour of attending the
ceremony of commendation where Sanae was officially
presented with the Foreign Minister’s Commendation by
Consul-General Susumu Fukuda at an award ceremony
hosted by the Consulate General of Japan in Calgary. In
her acceptance of the award, Sanae acknowledged the
large number of people who together contribute to the
promotion of Japanese culture in both the EJCA and
MEJCS and she happily accepts the award for all of
these people.
As current President of the MEJCS and EJCA board
member, I am deeply appreciative of the efforts of Sanae
and truly enjoy working with her. This is a prestigious
award, and Sanae is most deserving. Congratulations!
２０１３年１０月２８日にカルガリーの総領事館公邸で開かれた授賞
式に私も出席しました。福田総領事が、アルバータ州からこの感謝
状を受賞した他の二人とともに大木早苗さんに賞状を手渡しました。
受賞にあたり大木早苗さんは、この受賞はメトロ・エドモントン・ジャ
パニーズ・コミュニティー・スクールとＥＪＣＡではたくさんの人と一緒
に活動した結果であり、賞は一緒に活動してきた多くの人達に与え
らたものだと思うので、うれしいですと受賞の挨拶をしました。私は
現在ＥＪＣＡ役員会の役員ですが、同時にメトロ・エドモントン・ジャパ
ニーズ・コミュニティー・スクールの会長をしております。この二つの
組織の両方で多くの貢献をした大木早苗さんに感謝し受賞のお祝
いを申し上げます。

The 4 Explore Japan was held on November 5 and 6 at
the Institute for Innovation in Second Language Education
(iisle) of the Edmonton Public School Board. The program
provides Grade 10 students in the greater Edmonton area
who have started the Japanese language program this
September with an opportunity to explore Japanese culture
at first hand. Through a variety of Japanese culture handson workshops, the program will enhance the understanding
of Japanese culture by the Edmonton youth and promote
friendship between Japan and Canada.
First time this year, a consul Yukimi Kurata from the
Consulate General of Japan in Calgary joined the Steering
Committee of the Explore Japan. Other members of the
Steering Committee are from the EJCA, iisle, Alberta
Education, and the Alberta Japanese Teachers Association.
Thanks to the effort of the Consulate General of Japan in
Calgary, a major part of funding for the program came from
Japan while Alberta Education and iisle provided the rest.
The EJCA made major contributions to the program by
providing instructors, assistants, guides, Taiko players,
Japanese dancers and all equipment/materials.
The activities and people contributed to the program were:
1. Opening session: Welcome messages by Consul
General Fukuda and Mr. Darrel Robertson,
superintended of the Edmonton Public School Board,
and Taiko performance. (Taiko players from Kita no
Taiko: Carley Okamura, Masa Oba, Ryan Dumas,
Marie Caluttung, Zavian Sildra and Yuki Isaka)
2. Closing session: Japanese traditional dance and
Manga contest (Japanese dancers from Wakaba-kai:
Anne Cassady, Mineko Sasano, Yoshie Kaneda and
Yuko Nakano)
3. Workshops: All students attended all workshops.
1. Calligraphy by Enko St. Laurent, Fukuko
Gordon, Kanae Nakamotoo and Keiko Oba).
2. Tea ceremony and Flower arrangement by
Mineko Koto, Naoko Kerr and anonymous.
3. Kimono by Junko Froment, Shiho Asano,
Thanh Royds, and Yukiko Nagakura.
4. Manga (a new program replaced previous
Origami workshop) by Gigi Lau.
5. Exchange experience and opportunities by
Catherine Ford.
6. Taiko.
7. Karate by Dana Nawata and John Priegert.
Guides played an important role to move students
from one workshop to another. They were Akiko
Ogata, Atsuko Bartsch, Cathy Tennant, Hiro Kubota,
Louise Wong, Naomi Leroy and Takashi Ohki. The
guides welcomed students when they arrived by bus
and led them to homerooms, passed around
nametags, then led them to workshops. Each day,
about 140 students in six groups moved from one
workshop to another. Without guides it could have
been chaotic.

２０１３エクスプロアー・ジャパン

１１月５日と６日に第四回エクスプロアー・ジャパン・プログラムがエドモ
ントン・パブリック校教育委員会の第二言語教育革新協会（ウエストマ
ウント・ショッピングセンター近くの旧小学校）で開かれました。このプロ
グラムはエドモントン地区の高校で日本語を学習している高校一年生
を対象にして、丸一日、様々な日本文化を実際に手にとって経験しても
らうプログラムです。この経験を通してエドモントン地区の若い人達が
日本とカナダの相互理解を深める、という意図もあります。
今年ははじめて在カルガリー日本総領事館から倉田ゆきみ領事がエク
スプロアー・ジャパンの企画委員会に参加しました。企画委員会の他
の委員はＥＪＣＡ，第二言語教育革新協会、アルバータ州教育省、アル
バータ州日本語教師協会の代表です。在カルガリー日本総領事館の
お骨折りでエクスプロアー・ジャパンの運営費の主要部分を日本政府
の援助金でまかなうことができました。残りの運営費はアルバータ州教
育省と第二言語教育革新協会からの援助金でまかない、生徒から参
加費は徴収しないで行うことができました。ＥＪＣＡは講師、助手、ガイド、
太鼓演奏家、日本舞踊家、そして様々な道具と材料を提供しました。
今年のエクスプロアー・ジャパンの運営に参加した人達は次のとおりで
した。

ＥＪＣＡからの道具の貸し出し：書道セット４０組(硯、文鎮、ふと筆、細筆，
下敷き)、墨汁、茶道セット一式、茶道用家具一式、屏風４枚、生け花用
花器と剣山、着物掛け二つ、姿見鏡一つ、浴衣セット（浴衣、帯、下駄、
草履）３５組、北の太鼓の太鼓１０とその他の演奏器具。
企画委員会ではＥＪＣＡの多大な貢献に感謝しています。また３０数名
のボランティアの中には二日間仕事の休暇をとって参加していただい
た方がいます。この方々をはじめてエクスプロアー・ジャパンの主旨に
賛同されて献身的に協力された皆様にお礼をもうしあげます。そして最
後に、今年もエドモントン、レッド・ディア、スプルース・グローブ、セント
アルバートから総勢２８０人の高校生や先生方がこのプログラムに参
加し、日本文化の理解を深め、将来ぜひ日本に行きたいという生徒も
たくさんいて、このプログラムがカナダと日本の相互理解に貢献してい
ると手応えを感じたことをお伝えいたします。

The equipment and materials that the EJCA provided were:
40 calligraphy sets (small and large brushes, pads, weighs,
ink pots), inks, one tea ceremony set, a furniture set for the
tea ceremony, 4 shoji screens, flower arrangement vases
and other tools, 2 kimono stands, mirrors, kimono hangers,
and 35 kimono sets (Yukata, Obi and Geta). Kita no Taiko
used 10 taikoes and other instruments.
The Steering Committee expressed their sincere
appreciation of the EJCA for its major contribution to the
program. Some volunteers took days off from their jobs and
worked for the program. Working full two days (three days
for most of people who came on the Monday afternoon for
set up of the rooms) by about 30 people was possible only
by their firm commitment to the program. EJCA owns many
culture-related equipment/materials and they were very
valuable for the event.
Finally, the most important outcome from this event was
that 280 students from Edmonton, Red Deer, St. Albert and
Spruce Grove improved their knowledge of Japanese
culture and the Japanese way of behavior. Many students
mentioned that they would like to visit Japan in the future.

The EJCA Fall Bazaar was held on Saturday, November 2 ,
2013. Organizers were once again anxiously watching the
weather reports and keeping their fingers crossed. Although
some snow did fall that afternoon, we were fortunate to
miss the major snowfall by one day.
Preparations for the Bazaar began in September with the
organizing committee meeting to decide on the menu,
hours of operation, volunteer recruitment, floor layout,

advertising, etc. Volunteers gathered on Oct. 8 and 9 to
make 82 packages of mochi, always a popular item. The
Matsu no Kai Seniors Group spent part of their meeting
cooking kinpira gobo as their contribution to the Bazaar.
Wagashi (Japanese pastries) enough for 250 packages

were prepared Oct. 24 in the kitchen while another group
worked in the basement sorting out non-food donations and
bringing them up to the lounge. Many volunteers were once
st
again at the Centre on November 1 working on food
preparation or pricing and display of non-food sales items.
On Bazaar day, kitchen volunteers began making sushi at
8:00 a.m. while the other workers continued to arrive
throughout the morning. They set up the tables and chairs,
organized the silent auction display, put together the bento
boxes, sorted and priced the baked goods and took care of
any last minute crises. Since the hall was not open for food
sales until 11:30, visitors who came early were directed to
the lounge where they were able to choose from many
treasures, both Japanese and Western. Once the hall
opened, a line formed to buy bento boxes and tickets for
the udon and Katsu-curry dishes. In all, 250 bento boxes
and 100 hot dishes were sold. The tables were soon full,
with visitors enjoying their meals while visiting with families
and friends. Servers were kept busy pouring tea and
bringing hot meals from the kitchen. Everyone was free to
buy some tasty baked goods, kinpira gobo, moshi and
manju. Everyone was encouraged to bid on the many silent
auction items which included the ever popular gift
certificates from Japanese restaurants, pottery, Japanese
dolls, kimonos, paintings and even a set of designer
coasters from our new Mayor’s office.
Everyone who came to the Bazaar had been given a ticket
for the door prize draw which was held at 1:00 p.m. The
prize was a basket filled with items donated by the private
vendors who had tables in the lounge. A head count was
kept throughout the day and showed a final total around
300+ visitors and volunteers at this year’s bazaar. No
wonder the hall felt overcrowded! Final bids for the 35 silent
auction items were accepted until 2:00 p.m., with the
Bazaar officially ending at 2:30 p.m.
The purposes of having a bazaar are identified as: (1) Fund
raising (we made over $6,500 as net), (2) Meet friends and
socialize with community people, (3) Enjoy Japanese food,
(4) Find unique gift for special occasions and for Christmas,
and (5) Open the Centre to Edmontonians in general. I am
quite sure that we achieved all the goals again this year.

２０１３年秋のバザー

１１月２日（土）にＥＪＣＡ秋のバザーがＥＪＣＡセンターで開かれました。
毎年のことですが、バザーの準備はもう９月から始まります。どういう食
べ物を用意するか、即売会とサイレントオークションの品物をどう集め
るか、調理はだれが何をつくるか、いったい何人のボランティアが何の
仕事に必要か、など様々な課題を一つずつ解決していきます。１０月８，
９日にはセンターでお餅をつくり１０切れずつ８２のパッケージにして冷
凍しまし、また１０月２４日には２５０パッケージの和菓子をつくりました。
松の会は例会でキンピラゴボウをつくりました。
バザー当日には調理担当のボランティアは朝の８時から働き始めまし
た。ラウンジはいろいろは工芸品の即売会の用意で忙しく、ホールはた
くさんの人が食事ができるようにテーブルと椅子をならべています。１１
時にラウンジが開くと同時にたくさんの人が工芸品の品定めに殺到し
ました。ＥＪＣＡの会員が家にある品物を持ち寄るのですが、クリスマス
の贈り物にちょうど良いような日本の工芸品や食器類が不思議と毎年
あつまります。エドモントンでは買えないものが多く、ＥＪＣＡのバザーで
クリスマスショッピングをするのを楽しみにしている人が大勢います。
さて１１時半になってホールが開くと昼食とベークセールを待っていた
人が一度に入ってきます。今年は過去の経験からお客さんの交通整
理をするボランティアを一人おいて、注文を受け付ける所が混み合わ
ないようにしました。また予定したお客さんに十分な数の弁当と昼食を
用意しました。ランチボックスの弁当は三種類で全部で２５０個、台所で
調理する暖かい昼食はカツカレーとかき揚げうどんで、これも十分な数
があります。弁当は完売で、暖かい昼食は１００食売れました。ホール
のテーブルはすぐに満員になり、ホールの隣の会議室も臨時の食堂に
しました。ホールは食事のあとも友達と歓談する人で賑わっていました
が、１２時半までには食事はだいたい終わっていました。でも今年は食
べ物を多く用意したので１時過ぎに来た人にも弁当と暖かい食べ物を
出すことができました。ホールの大きさ、ボランティアの数を考えると、
ＥＪＣＡバザーの食べ物の量は今年のバザーで用意したものが限界だ
とおもいます。
今年はバザーに来た人全部に福引きの切符をあげました。商品はいろ
いろなものが詰まったバスケットでした。テーブルを借りてバザーに出
店（？）した方からの寄付のものです。またサイレントオークションでは
３５の品物のオークションがありました。今年のバザーに来た人はボラ
ンティアを入れて３００人強でした。売り上げは、材料費を引いた純益
（ボランティアの人件費は引いてありません）が６，５００ドルでまた去年
の記録を更新しました。
今年もたくさんのボランティアとお客様が協力して楽しく、またＥＪＣＡの
運営資金に貢献するバザーが出来たことをうれしく思い、皆様に感謝
いたします。最後にバザーの目的をまとめてみました。そして今年はど
の目的も達成したとおもいます：（１）ＥＪＣＡの運営資金の調達に貢献
すること、（２）社交の場を提供すること、（３）日本食を楽しむこと、（４）
ユニークなクリスマスギフトを提供すること、そして（５）エドモントンに人
達一般にＥＪＣＡセンターを解放すること。

図書館の本を返して新年を迎えましょう
It's important for the Japanese to welcome a new year
with a clean state, so cleaning is done at home, work,
and school before New Year's holiday. So, start the year
fresh and guilt-free by returning your overdue books and
get ready to borrow some of the recently added
materials in the EJCA library. Looks like winter is already
here … the perfect time to relax with a book or get
hooked on a Japanese TV-drama!
Be Aware of the Dishwasher in the EJCA
Kitchen; It is not Like the One You Have at Home

Why is the EJCA dishwasher so different from the one
you have at home? The EJCA dishwasher is a
commercial, high temperature, sanitizing dishwasher. It
preheats wash water to 70˚C, and rinse water to 85˚C.
There is an automatic soap and rinse agent feeder
system. It washes and rinses in less than 5 minutes. (It
also costs over $3,000!)
How to use this wonderful machine? Preheat the first
wash water by opening the door, and then turning on the
toggle switch. Wait 10 minutes for the preheat cycle to
complete. While waiting, scrape food residue into the
garbage can, and rinse the plates and cutlery, place
plates, cups and utensils in the dish racks, then close the
door to run the load. While running, prepare a second
rack of rinsed dishes. When the first cycle is complete (5
minutes), remove the rack, put in the second rack, and
close the door. Allow the first rack to air dry, which takes
a few minutes since the dishes are so hot. Put away
these dishes, and prepare another rack. Keep going until
all dishes are done, dry and put away. See the written
instructions in the kitchen for pictures.
Food Safety considerations:
1. Air dry the dishes and cutlery. Why? Using a towel
can transfer germs to clean dishes.
2. Handle all plates and cups from the outside, and
utensils by the handles. Why? Touching surfaces that
contact food may transfer germs.
Recent Developments of the Movie, “Raiko’s Hina
Dolls”

A baby, Manzo Nagano Harold played a role of Sachi in
the movie. He is the fifth generation descendant of
Manzo Nagano, the first Japanese who came to Canada.
Now he has a baby sister and her parents named her
Sachi based on the character in the movie.
Mr. Yusuke Tanaka, the former editor of the Nikkei Voice
wrote an interesting review of the film in the Apirl 2013

ＥＪＣＡセンターの皿洗機の使用法

ＥＪＣＡセンターの台所の皿洗機は商業用で家庭用の皿洗機とは使
用法が違います。この皿洗機は３，０００ドルします。皿洗機を長持
ちさせるため、また効率的に衛生的に使うために次のことに注意し
てください。

皿洗機のドアーを開いてから、皿洗機の全面下部にあるスイッ
チを入れて１０分間準備の加熱をします。１０分間で皿洗い機に
使用する水を摂氏７０度に加熱します。
皿、カップなどの食器は食べ物のこりをゴミ箱にすててから、き
れいに水洗いします。次に食器を皿洗機用のカゴにいれてから、
このカゴを皿洗機にいれてドアーを閉めると摂氏８５度のお湯
で洗浄が始まります。５分間ほどで洗浄と乾燥が終わります。
カゴを皿洗機から取り出して数分間空気にさらして冷やします。
食器類を棚に戻し、カゴも所定の位置に戻します。台所に整理
場所に写真が貼ってありますから参考にしてください。

い。食器を布で拭かないでください。布に付いたばい菌が食器
についてしまいます。
食器を扱うときは裏側、縁を持ちます。皿の表面、カップ類の内

使用した食器を皿洗いして棚に戻すのは台所を使用した人の責任
です。センター・マネジャーの仕事ではありません。

うなことがありました。
映画で赤ん坊のサチの役を演じたマンゾー・永野・ハロルド（カナダ
への移民第一号として有名な永野万蔵の五代目の子孫です）に妹
が生まれて両親は映画にちなんでサチと命名しました。
元日系ボイスの日本語版編集長をしていた田中祐介氏が「麗子の
雛人形」の映画評をバンクーバー・ブレティン（2013 年 4 月号）に発

松の会の近況
At our October meeting, members made kinpira gobo as
their contribution to the EJCA Bazaar. Many members
also helped at the Bazaar in the kitchen, bake sale table,
bento sales, silent auction and non-food sales tables.
Each month one or two members makes a presentation,
sharing with us the highlights of their lives. October was
Jim Hoyano’s turn to tell us about his early years in
Southern Alberta, education and life in Edmonton. Since
we were so close to Halloween, everyone was asked to
dress in costume. Prizes were awarded to Magdalen
Miklos as a witch and Kiyo Oikawa as Zorro. After lunch
at our November meeting, Yoko Azumaya will present a
seminar on Wills and Estates. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
For our outgoing event in November, we are going to the
Jubilations Dinner Theatre for dinner and the show “Elvis
and the Las Vegas Hangover”. In December, we are
going to have our annual Christmas lunch at Buffet
Royale. New plans and activities will be discussed for
January and future months.
The club holds elections every two years to get a new
executive in place for the next year. At our 2013
elections held in October, Peter C. Wong was re-elected
as President and Yumiko Hoyano as Vice-President. New
executives, Louise Wong as Secretary and Heidi
Matsune as Treasurer, will complete the team to guide
the club’s operations for 2014 & 2015. Thank you to
Debby Oikawa and Martha Miller for their two years of
service on the executive committee. Other members will
be asked to serve on various committees to carry out
club activities.

ヤさんが遺言と資産についての話をします。これには松の会の会員
以外の人もどうぞご出席ください。
１１月の戸外活動はジュビレーション・ディナー・シアターに行き、「エ
ルビス・プレスリーとラスベガス」を観劇します。１２月の例会はビュッ
フェ・ロイェールでクリスマスの晩餐をします。１月以降の活動ははま
だ未定です。

We would like to thank EJCA for the Kimiko Shimizu
Cultural Development Grant which enabled us to hold our
first watercolor exhibition at the Centre on September 28
and 29, 2013. We were excited about showing you our
years of effort and putting this show on gave us the
experience on how to prepare for an exhibition. We
appreciated your support by coming out to view our
works and also those who came to the reception on the
28th. The same exhibition continues at the Jeff Allen
Gallery (Strathcona Place Centre, 10931 Univ. Ave.) until
October 31. A large number of people came to the
reception there on October 9 and we thank them.
The club began humble enough when a few art loving
people got together at the late Hyoko Baxter’s house in
2006. In 2007 we moved to the EJCA Centre to hold
classes in the present format. Ever since, we have been
steadily painting with support of a few core people. Our
present membership is 10. New members are always
welcome so if you are thinking of painting watercolor we
encourage you to join us and try it.
Our November-December session is as follows:
Classes are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday afternoon ( 1 to 4
pm) in the lounge-3.

Kita no Taiko is holding an intermediate
Japanese drumming workshop for those
who have already taken Level II.

We regularly offer beginners’ workshop to
allow people to experience taiko. This
workshop is full of fun for taiko beginners.

アート・クラブは２０１３年９月２８/２９日にＥＪＣＡセンターで開かれた
アート・クラブの第一回水彩画展覧会のために援助していただいた
キミコ・シミズ文化育成助成金に感謝いたします。最初の展覧会な
ので大変緊張しましたが、おかげで展覧会の用意についての経験を
積むことが出来ました。展覧会にいらしてくださった皆様、２８日にレ
セプションにおいでくださった皆様、ありがとうございました。同じ水

アート・クラブは２００６年にごくわずかな人達が今は亡きバクスター

支えられてコツコツと絵画の研鑽にいそしんでまいりました。現在の

IKEBANA CLUB
生け花クラブ
The ikebana club started in April this year and has 14
members. Generally we meet twice a month, on the 1st
and 3rd Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at EJCA
Centre Flower arranging follows the Ikenobo style of
ikebana under the guidance of our teacher, Jean-Marcel
Duciaume. Lessons, which include historical information
and discussions of the differences between Japanese
and “western” arrangements, began with more traditional
arrangements and have moved into discovering the
principles of modern free style ikebana. We hope to run a
series of introductory lessons for new students in the
spring of 2014 to prepare them for the group’s regular
lessons. Detailed information, pictures and lesson notes

a class at any time.

NIHONGO KIDS CLUB
The Edmonton Nihongo KIds Club (ENKC) is teaching
Japanese culture to children in the Japanese language. It
resembles a small Japanese school where interaction and play
are important elements for children growing up.
We play with children using puppet shows, Kamishibai (a
traditional Japanese picture show), and a home-made magic
show. The children partake in doing crafts, singing traditional
Japanese songs, dancing and much more. It is a good
opportunity for parents to meet new friends in a social setting.

エドモントン日本語キッズクラブは日本語で子供に日本の文化を教
えています。ちょうど小さいな日本の学校のように少人数で子供同
士、子供と大人の交流を遊びを通して楽しく深めていくなかでの学習
です。パペットショウ、紙芝居、自作のマジックショウなどを活用して
います。また子供はクラフトの作成、伝統的な日本の歌や踊りをしま
す。子供だけでなく、子供の親の交流の場所も提供しています。例
会は毎週木曜日午後１２時半から２時までＥＪＣＡセンターで行いま

NIHONGO KAIWA (Japanese Conversation Club)
We meet weekly on Mondays at EJCA Centre for
informal Japanese conversation in an effort to improve
our speaking and listening skills. New members are
always welcome to join us for one or both:
Beginner/Intermediate session 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Intermediate/Advanced session 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Drop-ins are welcome to join one free session before
committing. This year we have been lucky to have a
rotating group of native speakers volunteer their time to
help guide the conversation and help with
vocabulary/grammar.
