Health Care Reform: Change is Coming
Dear Keiro Family,
Recently, the candidates for president
shared many thoughts about how best
to handle the reform of health care,
a system which is currently
unsustainable. Although many
details on the way forward are still
unresolved, we know that wide,
systematic changes to health care
(imposed on us from forces outside
of our control) will impact almost
everyone. We will do our best to
keep you all informed.
Consumer-Driven Health Care
The new model is partly based on an
idea called consumer-driven health
care. Consumer-driven health care
can be defined as giving health care
consumers control, choice, and
information regarding their health.
At Keiro, we have been educating
our community about this approach
and how it will impact our individual
aging experience for quite some time
now. To help curb health care costs,
consumers will be given choices in
selecting health plans that offer
different benefits and approaches to
managing our health. Some are more
focused on prevention strategies while
others on accommodating health
conditions. Already we are offered
choices as to what interventions or
medications we want to pay for, as
health plans choose what they allow
patients to access.
Coordinated Care
On a larger scale, we will be given
choices to join health plans that
combine groups of people
depending on where they live into
populations of beneficiaries. The
goal is to coordinate the care of
these beneficiaries, with integrated
groupings of providers, like nursing
homes, hospitals, and physicians.
Already, some of these groupings do
not make sense to people who use the
plans. For example, Keiro
residents may be forced to use a
hospital where their doctor does not
practice, because the hospital that
their doctor uses is not in the
provider grouping. Because of this,
the resident is treated by an
unfamiliar doctor, who may not speak
Japanese. These alignments of
providers are made for different
reasons. Keiro does not control how
these alignments are created but is
obligated to participate within them.
Many of you have already experienced
this if you are in an HMO.
Empowering Our Community
The way forward is to realize that
while we do not control how the
system is created, we can control our
approach to our own health through
managing our lifestyle behaviors and
making informed choices. This is
why The Institute for Healthy Aging
at Keiro was created back in 2006 –
to empower our community to take
charge of our own health. In
September, Keiro empowered over
300 women through seminars and
presentations at the second Women’s
Wellness Conference. Then in
November, over 800 participants
benefited from a one-mile walk,
education, health screenings, and
more at Genki Walk at the Farm, a
free event for our community.

also encourage you to attend one of
our many genki living programs to
help you chart your own path toward

Keiro Means Peace of Mind
An Interview with Beverly Ito, Keiro Intermediate
Care Facility Administrator and Family Member
Aging and caregiving are issues that affect everyone in our
community, including some of Keiro’s own staff members.
Below, KICF Administrator Beverly Ito shares about her own
family’s decision to place her mother in a long-term care facility,
and what Keiro means to her personally:
What has the journey been like for you and your mom?
The decision to relocate my mom from my sister’s
home in Las Vegas to Keiro Intermediate Care Facility
(KICF) happened very suddenly and unfortunately, we
did not have time to prepare my mom for the move.
We had declined several opportunities to admit her to
Keiro in the past, but in August, after repeated visits to
the emergency department and hospital stays, our family
decided to admit her to Keiro on a trial basis. Initially,
it was very difficult to explain and have her accept the
need for closely supervised care by licensed nurses to
prevent recurrent acute episodes of chronic medical
conditions. My sister and I actually cried the first night
my mom spent at Keiro – questioning whether the time
was right, if there were other options, just going through
a myriad of emotions. I brought my mom home the first
few weekends but actually, by the end of the first week,
she was very comfortable at Keiro and repeatedly told
us how much she loved it here. Now we’ve established a
daily routine, where I come early and walk with her in
the morning before starting work. We use this time to
catch up on family news, reminisce, or chat with other
residents. Having her at Keiro has given us an opportunity
to re-connect and for her to be near her grandchildren.
What does Keiro mean to you now as a
family member?
Having my mom at Keiro really does provide peace
of mind. I know that she is safe, happy, and healthier
at Keiro. She loves the social stimulation – having an
opportunity to chat with other residents and engage in
activities throughout the day. My family and I can see
the difference it’s made – her mood is brighter and she
is doing well physically. I know that the nursing staff is
looking after her and will call if there are any concerns.
I appreciate how Keiro has relieved the burden of care
from my siblings and promoted quality of life for
my mom.
How did you know the timing was right to put your
mom in Keiro?
We had repeatedly considered and dismissed the idea
of having mom live at Keiro after my dad passed away
four years ago. Following his passing, my mom moved
from Pacific Grove/Monterey to Las Vegas to live first
with my brother
and then with
my sister. They
both did a great job
caring for her and
filling the void in
her life. This year,
she had recurrent
health problems that

emergency department

and/or hospital more and
more frequently. It became
emotionally stressful for her and
for my brother and sister and their
families with each acute episode. When
a bed became available, we decided, as a
family, to give KICF a try. Knowing there would be
nursing supervision 24/7 and medical oversight to
potentially stabilize her condition were the key
deciding factors.
What’s a lesson your mom taught you that has
been useful to you in your job or personal life?
Though my dad was the one who articulated the
importance of values like “arigatami,” it was my mom
who gave meaning to those values through her
everyday actions. She still repeats “thank you, thank
you” for every small favor or kindness. I would have
to say that’s the lesson that has been most useful to
me – to show appreciation to others.
How does having a mom at Keiro affect how you
relate to other family members?
As staff, we really try to create relationships with
residents and families to make them feel like they are
an extension of our Keiro “family.” Now that I really
am a “family member,” I can share my experience
with other family members and I’ve found that most
often, there are more commonalities for us to
discuss as we share personal stories. It has also
become both a personal and professional mission
for me to understand the changes under health care
reform and its effect on not only facility operations,
but also on access to care for our residents. When
I visit on the weekends, I feel like any other family
member – picking up or delivering laundry, taking
my mom outside for walks, and leisurely sitting by
the koi pond or on the patio greeting other residents
and families passing by. It’s a new perspective on a
view that I’ve seen every day as an employee.

Walk with Ease to a Genki Life
Over the summer, Keiro offered the Arthritis Foundation’s 6-week self-directed walking program, Walk with Ease
(WWE) free of charge to our community through The Institute for Healthy Aging at Keiro. 519 people
participated including 43 Keiro residents, 188 volunteers and community members, and 288 Keiro staff.
The information and strategies contained throughout the WWE program were developed at the Stanford Center
for Research in Disease Prevention and were proven to be effective.
At the end of the program, participants
said that their physical pain and fatigue
levels decreased, while their mood levels
improved. Most importantly, they overwhelmingly felt confident that
they would continue to walk or be
physically active.

Why did you join Keiro’s Walk With
Ease (WWE)?
I needed a program that could give me more
instructions and structure to discipline myself to
exercise on a regular basis.
Did you exercise before WWE?
Yes. I did chair exercise on Monday and Friday, and
Tai Chi once a week at my church.
How often and how much did you walk
during WWE?
5 days a week: Monday-Friday, I walked around the
block in my neighborhood for 15-20 minutes.

On Sunday, I walked to church (15 minutes each way)
with my friend.
What were the results?
I feel my legs are stronger now. I am also more
disciplined – I even walked during my vacation.
I made time to do this.
What is Genki Living?
Genki living to me is the state where body, mind and
soul are well-balanced, and it can be achieved by
taking care of myself. Keiro’s programs have helped
me to realize that.

Over 800 people participated in Keiro Senior HealthCare’s Genki Walk at the Farm, a free event held at
Tanaka Farms in Irvine on Saturday, November 3. Participants of all ages enjoyed an educational one-mile walk,
sampled fresh fruits and vegetables, and picked up resources for healthy living. At the Resource Fair, participants
tried products and samples from nearly 20 exhibitors, watched cooking demonstrations, and took part in fitness
activities such as line dancing and zumba. Over 200 people also received optional free health screenings by
HealthCare Partners and Talbot Medical Group. Organized by The Institute for Healthy Aging, this event was
made possible only with the generous support of Tanaka Farms, nearly 100 volunteers, community partners, and
sponsors such as Sodexo Senior Living, The Folick Family, and many others.

Caregiver Tips During the Holidays
For those who may be celebrating the holidays with someone who has Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, here are
some tips to make things go as smoothly as possible:
• Talk about and show photos of people who are coming to visit beforehand
• Have name tags to help connect faces with names
• Celebrate earlier in the day to reduce the likelihood of Sundowner Syndrome
• Try to limit the guest list to avoid overwhelming your loved one
• Use ribbon or yarn instead of sharp hooks to decorate and avoid decorating with
items that look edible

確実にに一人一人に影響を与えること
になるでしょう。敬老では最善の努力
を尽くし、皆さまに情報をお伝えする
ことにいたします。
消費者主義の医療
新しいモデルは「消費者主義の医療」
と呼ばれる考えに一部基づいていま
す。「消費者主義の医療」は、消費者
に自身の健康に関する情報および選択
を与え、それによって消費者が自身の
健康の自己管理を行う医療と定義でき
ます。敬老では、この取り組みについ
て、また、それが一人ひとりが歳を重
ねていく過程で、どのような影響を与
えるかということを、ここ数年に渡り
コミュニティーの皆様にお伝えしてき
ました。上昇する医療コストを抑える
ため、消費者は、自身の健康を管理す
るための異なるベネフィットおよび取
り組みを提供する医療プランの中から
選択することになります。予防医療に
力を入れているもの、病名や健康状態
に順応したものなどプランは様々で
す。現在既に、個人が選ぶ薬や医療介
入は、皆様の医療プランがどのような
医療処置を許可するのかによってその
選択肢が決まっているのです。

連携するケア
もっと規模の大きな変化としては、敬
老は、受益者を居住地域によって群別
する医療プランに加入する選択を与え
られることになります。これは受益者
のケアを、供給側、すなわちナーシン
グホームや病院、医師たちと連携し
て提供させるのが目的です。しかし
今の段階でも、これらのグループ分
けがうまく稼動しないことは明白であ
ります。たとえば、敬老の居住者たち
は、これまでの主治医の所属する病院
とは違う病院を利用することになるか
もしれません。供給側との連携作用に
よって、これまでの担当医ではなく、
面識がなく、日本語も話せない医師に
診てもらうことになるのかもしれない
のです。このようなケアの連帯にはい
くつかの理由があります。しかし、こ
うした供給側の振り当てに敬老が関与
することはできませんが、このような
連携されるグループに敬老は義務とし
て参加しなければいけません。もし現
在、HMOに加入していらっしゃる方で
したら、こうした経験を既にされてい
るのではないでしょうか。
私たちのコミュニティーに力を
今後起こりうる変化の渦中にありなが
ら前進していくには、私たちはシステ
ムをコントロールすることはできませ
んが、生活習慣の管理とインフォーム
ド・チョイスを通して、自身の健康へ
の取り組みをコントロールすることは
できるということを認識することが必
要です。2006年、私たちは敬老ヘルシ
ー・エイジング研究機関を設立いたし
ました。個々人が自身の健康について
学ぶ場を作ることで、コミュニティー
に力を与えたいと考えたのです。この
９月、敬老は第二回女性たちのウェル
ネス・コンファレンスを主催、セミナ
ーやプレゼンテーションを通し、300
人以上の女性たちに力を与えること
ができました。そして11月には、800
人以上の方々が農場にて「元気ウォー
ク」に参加されました。コミュニティ
ーを対象にしたこの無料イベントで
は、１マイルのウォーキングや健康に
関する知識・情報の提供、健康検診な
どが行われました。

an attitude of gratitude, learning to adapt, being vulnerable, practicing
forgiveness, and finding your passion. Luncheon panelists Steven Huynh,
Andy Nakano, and Glenn Tanaka, led by moderator Frank Buckley,
co-anchor of KTLA Morning News, discussed the latest trends in cooking
and dining. The participants also enjoyed breakout sessions on financial
planning, stress reduction, skin care, feng shui, and the benefits of walking.

Witches, Pumpkins, and Grapes?
Staff members and
residents donned
costumes and paraded around for Keiro Nursing Home
residents on Halloween. Among the many traditional
Halloween-themed costumes were some that inspired
a second look. One creative nurse dressed as Keiro’s
time clock, while dietary staff members took the
opportunity to raise awareness about healthy
lifestyles. “To tie into Splash, a monthly hydration
program which promotes healthy nutrition and
wellness, we dressed as fruits and vegetables while
serving juice made from both fruits and vegetables,”
explains Christina Nguyen, Clinical Nutrition Manager,
dressed as Farmer John.
Giving Gratitude
To celebrate the beginning of fall, South Bay Keiro Nursing Home hosted a festive party for the Autumn
festival known as Akimatsuri. Traditionally, Akimatsuri is a time to celebrate and be grateful for a bountiful
harvest. Residents enjoyed eating outdoors in the patio area, decorated with bright paper lanterns, where
staff members wearing traditional kimonos served special food including sushi. “ We wanted to honor the
Fall Festival Day by wearing a Japanese traditional kimono,” said Sandy Garrido, pictured with resident
Sam Ichikawa. “The residents were very happy and we were very grateful to be part of such a special event.”

Certificate for
Centenarians
Every year, Japanese nationals who are naturalized
citizens of the United States or any other nation who
are or have turned 100 years old are presented a
Certificate of the Centenarian and a silver cup,
inscribed with the kanji (Chinese character) for
happiness. This year, Yuichi Kitada, Vice Consul at the
Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles, awarded
the certificate to Keiro Intermediate Care Facility
resident Kikuyo Utsumi, pictured at right with her
daughter Maggi Yaguchi, and Keiro Retirement Home
resident Aiko Yamaguchi, who were joined by their
family members and friends. They credit their healthy
and happy lifestyle for their longevity.
Unleashing
Their Talent
Some residents discover their artistic talents only after moving into Keiro. Throughout the year, Keiro
Retirement Home residents paint pictures, mold clay, knit yarn and fold paper into beautiful
masterpieces. One such artist is resident Techi Yoneda, who had an elaborate painting, origami, and
even a knitted dress on display with other resident artwork in the Activity Center. As the eldest in a
family that owned a store, Mrs. Yoneda never had any time for extracurricular activities like art. Only
when she moved into Keiro was she able to unleash her creative mind. “When I came to Keiro, I could do
whatever I wanted,” said Mrs. Yoneda. “I am so happy to be here.”

It Takes a Community…
to Hold an Outdoor Jazz Concert!
Every year, Keiro Intermediate Care Facility (KICF) staff and
volunteers host an outdoor concert for KICF and
Keiro Retirement Home residents to enjoy a special evening of
music and bento box dinners. Staff and volunteers
transform the parking lot into a tented dining area, string
lights, set up sound equipment, prepare decorations and
favors, escort residents, and serve meals to residents and their
families. The greater community is also involved: this year,
“Respect and Understanding,” a nonprofit organization
located in Pasadena, provided a jazz quartet, while donors
made possible the little extras for residents like favors and
catering. Thank you to everyone involved!

We’re over four years into a recession that seems to never
end. The stock market is more unpredictable than ever.
Real estate is still way down from its peak. The fiscal cliff
looms right in front of us, with the Bush tax cuts set to
expire at the end of this year and the increased taxes set to
take effect January 1, 2013, which could hurt the economy
even more. While we hope that this can be avoided, we
can’t be certain that will happen. What can a person do?
In spite of the uncertainties, in fact, because of them, we
need to plan. Now is not the time to bury our heads in the
shifting sands. We all want the best for our family and we
need to plan so that our family is taken care of, regardless
of what else happens.
1. Carefully select a good attorney to help guide
you to draft a good will or living trust. A living
trust is a little more complicated, but can save on
probate expenses and provide privacy. Your attorney
can keep your estate document current with
changing family and financial situations, and to keep
up with new laws and court decisions.
2. Consider family needs. Does an heir need help in
managing finances? Perhaps a trust providing life
time income would be better than giving that heir all
of the inheritance in a lump sum. Is there an heir
with special needs? If so, perhaps you want to look
into a special needs trust. Are grandchildren in the
picture? Perhaps special funds to provide for their
education should be part of your estate plan.
3. Estate taxes could see a big jump on January 1,
2013. Discuss with your professional advisors some
of the options you might want to consider to avoid
or reduce estate taxes. A gift to Keiro from your
estate will save on estate taxes and be a legacy from
you to all at Keiro.
4. Capital gains taxes could also increase next year.
Do you want to consider selling some highly
appreciated assets this year, pay the lower capital
gains taxes and re-purchase those assets next year
with a step-up in basis?
5. Need higher income, with safety? Bank CDs
and T-bills are paying so little, it’s hardly worth the
trouble. Consider a Gift Annuity with Keiro. We’re

Gift Annuities are issued in amounts over $10,000. Part
of that amount returns to you as a charitable income tax
