Over the course of this past weekend, I had the opportunity to
once again lead the Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery Visitation.
It was a wonderful weekend with many new encounters. One of the
nicer encounters took place at the cemetery in Duncan and I’d like
to share with you a little of what happened.

For the last several years we’ve had a handful of people attending
the service at the Duncan cemetery, however this year was
quite different. As the four of us from Steveston drove up to the
cemetery, we noticed a fairly sizeable group of over 25 people busy
scrubbing the headstones cleaning them of the moss that had built up. Among
them were about a dozen children playing and
cleaning at the same time. What a wonderful
sight to see. Most of the families were from
the local Nikkei community with the mothers
from Japan married to Canadian men. During
the service, I asked the children, “When you
were cleaning the headstones, did you hear
the voices?” They gave me a blank stare with
a few nodding their heads from side to side.
I proceeded to tell them that I had heard the
voices. To which they looked at me with a
questioning gaze. I told them the voices were
saying, “Aaah, that feels so good. Thank you.” They seemed very interested and
wondered if I could really hear voices. I told them that I may not hear it in the
same way as we hear our voices, but we can just feel the sense of gratitude for
being remembered and cared about. By the way their parents were nodding in
agreement, I knew they understood what I was talking about.
In the Jodo Shinshu teachings, there is a fundamental teaching known as KiHo Ittai. “Ki” means the vesicle (or in this case sentient beings, limited in time
and space) and “Ho” means the Infinite Dharma (not limited to time and space).
“Ittai” is translated as the unification of two entities. So put together, “Ki-Ho
Ittai” means the unification of the Infinite Dharma with the Sentient Beings.

The cemetery visitation was a wonderful opportunity to get a
glimpse of the concept of “Ki-Ho Ittai”. On one hand, those who
went before us have brought us to visit the cemetery, giving us a
deeper sense of appreciation and gratitude to our pioneers. Yet at
the same time, by the action of paying homage and cleaning, we can
sense the appreciation felt by those who had gone before us.
Though we may be limited in time and space, we are able to
come in touch with the unlimited truth of the Dharma. Much like
the encounter that we had at the cemetery, our temple is a place
to come in touch with the Dharma. As we begin the fall activities
starting with the September Shotsuki Monthly Memorial service,
may I invite you to come and experience
the Dharma at our temple.

Bon Odori Festival, 2016
Hopefully the past two months
have been a relaxing time for
everyone in contrast to the hectic
pace of spring events. Opportunity
was taken during this down time
to tidy the kitchen area and the
Fujinkai storage room. We hope to
label the shelves so items are returned to the same location.
This should keep the storage room tidy.
A thank you is extended to Bud Sakamoto and others
who repaired the water leak in the ceiling near the gym.
The monthly clean up tobans are reminded to wet mop
the kitchen floors as part of their tasks. A request was
forwarded to the temple board earlier in the spring. Few
of the Fujinkai ladies do mop when the floor is dirty, but
would appreciate it if this is again the responsibility of the
monthly toban.
Soft Goods Drive continues on. When the 20/20 project
is completed, there will be no storage space for the clothing
bags and boxes so take the opportunity to reduce your
clutter. It is hoped that the goal of 151 bags will be reached
before the end of 2016.
Extra copies of the 2015 World Buddhist Women’s
Convention report has been received. If you are interested
in receiving a copy, please let us know. It is in English,
Japanese and Portuguese. The next WBWC will be held
Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 2019 in San Francisco.
Planning for our annual Obon Festival started later than
usual but many members and non members came forward
to volunteer and we were quickly back on track.
The Bon Odori dance practices led by Yoko Matsuno,
Sensei, were well attended by 30 to 40 dancers, mostly
female but occasionally a male or two. These are the
dancers we follow as we dance around the Yagura.
A successful festival depends on a lot of preparation
and we had a lot of support. Days before, volunteers were
busy shopping, chopping and cooking. D-day, Saturday,
July 16th, started cool and overcast. The set up crew was
out in full force early in the morning and with the help
from the Judo Club members and Takarajima parents the
yagura, lanterns, booths and chairs were set up quickly
and smoothly. The area behind the temple now took on a
festive air and was ready for the occasion. At 4:00 pm when
the gates opened the festival mood was upped a few notches
with music, dancing, food and festival goers.
The food vendors were all busy with a few selling out
before the end of the day. A wide range of food items
were available from takoyaki to pulled pork to hot dogs to
sushi to Belgian waffles as well as popcorn and shaved ice...
something for everyone.
As the skies cleared and the day warmed up, more and
more people arrived. Many families with young children
came and the kids were thrilled to play the numerous games
and win prizes. In total, an estimated 800 people attended
the festival.
There were breaks in the festivities to hear a few speeches
from our special guests: Consul General Okai and her
husband, Mayor Malcolm Brodie, John Yap, Rev. and Mrs.
Koshin Ogui and Bishop Tatsuya Aoki.
At half time, we switched briefly from Bon Odori dancing
to Hawaiian hula dancing and for a couple of numbers from
the ever popular Taiko group.
Our Sensei, Grant Ikuta, did an excellent job as the
emcee as he announced the dance numbers, introduced
speakers, and called door prize winning numbers as well as
being the gracious host to our visitors. The winner of the
first prize of an Ipad Mini was Ron Araki. Congratulations
to all the prize winners.
As the Festival came to a close, volunteers again came
forward to take down the lanterns, yagura, booths and
chairs. In short order the magical moments of the festival
vanished into a mist. Photos of the events are also in the
mist as our official photographer could not attend. We
would ask anyone who took photos to please send a few to
the office for our records, and to remind us of the joy at the
festival. Or let our co-chairs know that photos do exist and
are available.
All of these memories could not have happened without
the countless number of volunteers. They made the festival
a success and a joy. Thank you for helping us to serve and
connect to the community.
We look forward to seeing all of you at the temple
on other occasions and most certainly at the next Obon
Festival.

President’s Message
I hope everyone is having an enjoyable
and a wonderful summer. This year spring
came early and the summer started with a
little rain in late June and early July. For the
past six weeks it has been very dry with mild
warm days and cool evenings. For our Obon
Festival in mid-July, the weather was a perfect day with no
rain and pleasantly sunny and warm.
When we plan the Obon Festival, we always hope that it
will not rain on that day. We cannot control the weather.
However if the weather is good we all feel good and are
grateful. If it rains we don’t share the same gratitude. It is
so easy to lose the sense of gratitude and meaning of Obon
as result of the weather that we have no control over. The
feeling and the meaning gratitude can be so fleeting.

SBT 2nd Annual Bowlathon
UPCOMING EVENTS
Sarana Affirmation Service
Saturday, November 19, 2016 6 – 8 pm
Zone Bowling Centre, 14200 Entertainment Blvd,
Richmond.
The event is both a fundraiser for the temple and an
evening of social and friendly competition. There will be
prizes for best scores and hidden scores so we will all have a
chance to win a prize.
You can participate as an individual and we will place
you on a team or you and your family/friends can register
as team. We are trying to recruit a minimum of 60 bowlers
to form 12 teams of 5 players each. The cost will be $35 per
person which will include 3 games and shoe rental as well
as prizes and refreshments during and after the games. The
cost for children will be $20 per person.
There will be a silent auction for prizes donated by our
members and temple supporters. The winners will be
announced at the end of our bowling session. At that time
we will also award prizes to the winners of the bowling
competition.
Please join us for an evening of physical activity,
competition and fellowship.

The Steveston Buddhist Temple in conjunction with the
JSBTC is planning on holding a Sarana Affirmation Service
to be held on Sunday, September 18th from 9:30 am.
The Sarana Affirmation Service is a solemn service,
following a tradition dating back to the time of Sakyamuni
Buddha. Men, Women, and children, who aspire to lead
the Buddhist way of life, are invited to join the countless
followers of the Buddha by taking refuge in the Three
Treasures of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and are
formally admitted to the Buddhist community. In Japanese
this service is known as “kie shiki”. As the applicants take
refuge in the Three Treasures of Buddhism their head is
touched three times by a ceremonial razor to symbolize the
shaving of the head upon entering the Brotherhood. On
participation, one receives a ‘hōmyō’, or Dharma Name.

We will be holding our Fall Higan Equinox service on

婦人会からのお知らせ
幾法一体の世界

先週末バンクーバーアイ
ランドお盆お墓参りツア
ーに参加することとなり
ました。私がツアーを担
当するようになって今年
で五年目になります。毎
年新たな出会いに巡り合
えて行くたびに楽しく過
ごさせていただいていま
す。今年は私のほかにスティーブストン仏教会
坂本バッドさんやほかの人たちがジムに近い方の天井の漏れから阿久根ロイ先生と筧朋子さんと私の母が行
を直してくれました。どうもありがとうございました。

春はいろいろな行事で忙しかったで
すが、この2か月間はいくらかゆっく
りできたでしょうか。この暇な時期
にキッチンや婦人会の倉庫を片づけ
ることができました。いずれ、棚に
ラベルを付けて品物を元の棚に戻せ
るようにしたいと思います。そうすれば倉庫もきちんとなる
でしょう。
毎月のお当番の時にモップを濡らしキッチンの床を拭くこと
も仕事の一部として下さい。この要求は春の役員会にも提出
されました。婦人会の何人かの方達は床が汚れている時は拭
いて下さいますが、毎月のお当番の一部としてもう一度ここ
でご確認をお願いいたします。

今年のツアーで一番印象に残ったのはダンカン
市のお墓参りです。去年までダンカンのお墓に
お参りに来るのは10人そこそこで、周りに住ん
でいる日系人たちでした。ところが、今回私た
ちが車で墓地に入るとそこには何と30人の親子
が一生懸命にお墓の掃除をしていました。聞く
柔らかい素材グッズ回収も続いています。20/20プロジェクと、去年参加された一人の日本人女性の方（ご
トが完了すると、これらを入れるバッグや箱の置場所がなく主人はカナダ人）が周りに住んでいる日本から
なります。ですから今のうちにご家庭の余分なものを減らしきている友達のお母さんグループに声をかけて
てください。2016年の末までに151バッグを達成したいで

会長からのお知らせ　皆さんは楽しく素晴らしい夏を過ごしていら
っしゃると思います。今年は夏が早く訪れ6月
末から7月初めは雨が少しありました。しか
し、過去6週間はとても乾燥し、昼は暖かく、
夜は涼しかったです。7月半ばの盆踊りは素晴
らしいお天気で、雨も降らず、心地よく晴れた暖かい夏の日
でした。
盆踊りの計画をする時はいつもその日に雨が降らないように
願います。お天気をコントロールする事はできません。でも
お天気がいいと誰もがいい気分になり、ありがたいと感じま
す。もし雨が降るとそうはいかず感謝の気持ちもありませ
ん。私たちがコントロールできない天候に左右され、お盆の
意味も感謝の気持ちも簡単に無くしてしまいます。それらは
本当にうつろい易いです。

お参りの時、子供たちに「みんな、お墓の掃除をしていた時
に何か声が聞こえましたか？」と聞くと子供たちはボーとし
た顔で私を見つめました。二・三人は何も聞こえなかったと
答えてくれました。そこで私が「先生にはちゃんと聞こえた
よ、墓石から『あー気持ちいいな、ありがとう』という声が
はっきりと聞こえたよ」、と言うと子供たちは興味津々に私
の話を聞いてくれました。私たちが日常的に話す声と同じよ
うな声は聞こえないけど、掃除している姿を見るとお墓に眠
る方からそのような気持ちが伝わってくると私が説明をする
と子供たちの後ろに立っていた親たちがうなずきました。
そこでふっと浄土真宗の根本的教えのひとつ「幾法一体」を
思い出しました。「機法一体」の「幾」はものを受ける器の
ことで、法を受ける私たち衆生のことです。「法」は宇宙心
理を表す仏法のことです。無限なる「法」と有限的「幾」が
ひとつとなったことを「機法一体」と言います。
ダンカンのお墓でのお掃除とお参りはまさに「機法一体」の
姿でした。それは、我々は亡くなられた方々（法）に導かれ
てお墓に参り、感謝の気持ちで掃除やお参りを通して亡くな
られた多くの命と一体になれたからです。これは理屈を超え
た世界であり、お念仏の世界であります。
お寺も私たちが法と一体になれる場所です。九月の祥月法要
をはじめ、秋の様々な行事へのご参加をお願いいたします。

2016年　盆踊り
帰依式
2016年のスティーブストン仏教会の盆踊りの準備は例年よ
り遅れて始まりましたが、多くの会員、会友がボランティア
をして下さり、すぐに軌道に乗りました。松野洋子先生の
ご指導による盆踊りの練習は例年通り老いも若きも毎回30
～40人参加しました。ほとんどが女性でしたが、一人、二
人男性もいました。盆踊り当日は踊りを知らない人達も、
練習に参加したこの人達が櫓の周りで踊るので参考にでき
ます。
お祭りを成功させるためには多くの準備が重要で、私たちは
沢山の支援を頂きました。何日も前からボランティアは買い
物をしたり、野菜を切ったり、料理をしたりしました。
そしてその日、7月16日（土）は涼しく曇りのお天気で始ま
りました。柔道クラブと宝島の親御さんたちの手助けもあ
り、会場設置グループは朝早くから全力で櫓、ちょうちん、
屋台、椅子を素早く設置しました。そのお陰でお寺の南側は
すでにお祭り気分になり、開場を待ちました。4：00にゲー
トが開くと音楽、ダンス、食べ物、多くの人の混雑でお祭り
ムードが急激に高まりました。
屋台は皆大忙しでその日が終わる前に売り切れた屋台も2か
所ほどありました。たこ焼き、プルドポーク、ホットドッ
グ、寿司、ベルジャンワッフル、ポップコーン、かき氷等、
皆さんの好みに合うよう食べ物は多岐にわたりました。
空が晴れあがり暖かくなってきたらもっと大勢の人達が来ま
した。子供連れの家族がとても多く、子供達は様々なゲーム
をしたり賞品に当たったりでワクワクしました。合計想定で
約800人もの人が来ました。
休憩時間には来賓のご挨拶がありました。来賓の方々は日本
国総領事岡井様とご主人様、リッチモンド市長マルコルム・
ブローディー氏、ジョン・ヤップ氏、小杭好臣先生と奥様、
総長青木龍也先生です。
半分ほど済んだところで、盆踊りを一時休憩し、ハワイのフ
ラダンスに代わり、さらにいつも大好評の太鼓演奏があり
ました。
我が生田先生は盆踊りの曲の案内、来賓の紹介、ドアプライ
ズの当選者発表、さらに参加者全員に対してのホストとして
素晴らしい司会者ぶりを示しました。1等賞のiPadMiniの当
選者はロン・アラキさんでした。当選者の皆様、おめでとう
ございます。
お祭りの終わりにはボランティアがまた櫓、ちょうちん、屋
台を外し、椅子を片付けてくれました。すぐにお祭りの楽し
かった時間が霧と消えてしまいました。というのは、お寺の
カメラマンが参加できなかったのでお祭りの様子を撮影でき
なかったのです。写真が数枚送られてきましたのでそれをニ
ュースレターに載せます。どなたでも写真を撮られた方は記
録として、そして楽しかったお祭りの思い出としてお寺に送
ってくださればありがたいです。または写真があると言う事
を教えて下さるだけでも結構です。いろいろな思い出は数多
くのボランティアがいなければできませんでした。ボランテ
ィアの皆さんがお祭りを成功と喜びに導いてくれました。私
たちを支持し地域とのつながりを付けるのを助けて下さり、
ありがとうございました。
また皆さんとお寺のほかの行事で、そして必ずや来年の盆踊
りでお会いするのを楽しみにしています。
スティーブストン仏教会は浄土真宗カナダ教団と共同で来る
9月18日（日）の9：30 amに帰依式を行う計画です。
帰依式はお釈迦様の時代からの伝統にのっとった厳粛な法会
です。仏教徒として生きていきたい男性、女性、お子さんは
仏法僧の三宝に帰依する事により、ほかの数多くのお釈迦様
の信徒に加わり、仏教徒として正式に認められます。日本語
では「帰依式」として知られています。志願者は仏教の三宝
に帰依するときに儀式用のカミソリで頭を3回触られます。
これは仏教徒になる時に頭を剃る事を象徴しています。帰依
式を受けることにより「法名」(Dharma Name)を授かりま
す。
帰依式の申込について詳しくお知りになりたい方はお寺の生

SBT 第2回年次ファンドレイジングボーリ
ング大会 2016年11月19日（土）6-8 pm

この行事はお寺のための資金集めと同時に、皆と楽しくボー
リングを競い合う夕べです。優勝した人には賞品があります
し、秘密のスコアもあるので皆が賞品をもらえるチャンスが
あります。
個人で参加する人はこちらでチームを組みますし、家族や友
達とご一緒ならその人たちとチームも組めます。1組5人で
12チームを作りたいので最低60人の参加者が必要です。参
加費は1人35ドルで、3ゲーム、靴、賞品、ゲームの間と後
でのスナックが含まれます。子供は20ドルです。
お寺の会員や会友から寄付された賞品のサイレント・オーク
ションもあります。ボーリング終了後賞品に当たった人の発
表があります。またその時にボーリングに勝った人にも賞品
が手渡されます。
運動と競技と親睦の夕べにどうぞ参加して下さい。
