Memorial Service
Looking out my office window, I can see
the cherry tree with all the blossoms just on
the verge of springing open signalling the
arrival of spring. It is hard to believe that we
are already coming up on the month of April.
It is during such a beautiful time of
the year that we celebrate our Hanamatsuri
Service commemorating the birth of Gautama
Sakyamuni Buddha, who was said to have
been born on April 8th, 565 BC, in Lumbini’s
Garden, in what is now known as Nepal. It
was in Lumbini’s Garden that Queen Maya,
who was returning back to her parent’s place
to give birth, took rest and it is there, that
the baby Siddhartha was born.
As we commemorate the birth of the baby
Buddha, we must keep in mind, what is
important is not just the fact that he was
born, but because of his existence the world
was given the gift of the Buddha Dharma. In
fact, in many Asian countries, Buddhists do
not commemorate the birth of the Buddha as
an isolated event, instead they commemorate
three important events in the life of the
Buddha, namely his birth, his attainment of
Enlightenment, and his passing from this earth
into what is generally referred to as PariNirvana, or Perfect Enlightenment. The three
events are commemorated in one celebration
known as the Wesak Celebration and is usually
held on the full moon day in May. According
to the Wesak celebrations, Siddhartha’s birth
is important because it ultimately led to the
attainment of Enlightenment by the Buddha.

the Dharma. For this
year’s Hanamatsuri,
we
are
very
fortunate to have
Dr. Bob Akune Sensei from our neighbouring
temple, the Vancouver Buddhist Temple, join
us as our special guest. Bob Sensei has
been serving as a minister assistant at the
Vancouver temple for the past several years,
however, even before becoming an assistant,
he has been helping out, leading Dharma
discussion groups for many years at the
temple.
Bob Sensei will be giving a public lecture
on Saturday, April 19th at 3:00 pm entitled,
“The Unique Life of Siddhartha Gautama and
My Dharma Path.” His talk will be followed
by the Hanamatsuri Potluck dinner starting at
5:00 pm. On Sunday, April 20th Bob Sensei
will be our guest for the Hanamatsuri service.
May I urge all of you to come join us
in receiving the Dharma on one of the most
important services that we observe during
the year, better still, bring along a friend or
family member and let us fill the Hondo with
the ringing voice of the Nembutsu.

President’s
Message
You may have noticed
a new dark silvery car
parked in our Sensei’s
carport.
I would like to report on a
recent major expenditure for the temple.
For the past 17 years the Honda Accord
has served ministers of the temple for
their transportation needs. This vehicle
was purchased in 1997 and for 17 years
it has performed well with reasonable
maintenance expenditures.
However in
the next few years major repairs would be
needed to maintain its drivability. Thus
the Board of Directors of the Temple
concluded that now is the time to replace
the vehicle.
To
determine the best replacement
option a committee was formed comprising
of the minister, a senior advisor and the
treasurer, to expedite selection of the
vehicle, lease or purchase options and
financing. After examining a number of
makes of vehicles, the Mazda 3 was
recommended. The best purchase option
was determined to be through a car
brokerage firm and financed internally
by the temple.
The Fujinkai donated
$20,000 and the remaining $6,000 was
to be paid through the Legacy Fund.
Thanks go to the Car Purchase
Committee for their dedication and
hard work and to Denise Ikuta for her
assistance with the brokerage firm and
her thoughtful donation of the finders’ fee
to the temple.
As we move forward into the year
2014, I am humbled and honoured by
the support of the Board of Directors
of the Temple. I hope to meet all the
temple members and to receive advice
and support to better serve the temple.

Toban 1 is now halfway into the
rotation of four months and looking ahead
to Hanamatsuri and preparation for the
Fujinkai’s Spring Food Fair.
Shrimp
will soon be prepared in readiness for
the latter event on March 22

Our new Logo
As you already noticed, the
temple newsletter committee has
produced a new vibrant format
for our newsletter with even colour
pictures. Along with the new format for
the newsletter, the committee has also
designed a new logo for the Steveston
Buddhist Temple. It is the wisteria crest
encircled by a rope. The wisteria is
the traditional symbol for the Hongwanji
branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism and
the rope represents the fishing industry
and the role it played in the lives
of many of our members. The circle
that the rope makes up represents the
harmony of the Sangha at our temple,
receiving together the Buddha Dharma.
We think that this new logo captures the
uniqueness of the Steveston Buddhist
Temple. We hope you like it too and
would be happy to hear your feedback.

Highlights of March Board Meeting
The new executive for 2014 was
elected at this meeting. Bud Sakamoto
is our new president. Kiyo Domai is 1st
Vice with Hiroko Yoshihara as 2nd Vice.
Elmer Morishita will remain as treasurer.
Our newest board member, Nicole Okano,
is secretary.
Fujinkai has helped with the financing
of the minister’s car.
$20,000 was
given to the Temple to replace the car
of 17 years old and in need of expensive
repairs.
A new committee has been formed
as the Development Committee(20/20
Vision) with Sensei and Rainer Mehl at
the present time. Work of this committee
will take a lengthy time period of 5 years
as they meet with the consultant, Doug
Purdy. Board and temple members will
be kept informed before any decisions
are made.
Join us in welcoming Dr. Robert
Akune Sensei of the Vancouver Buddhist
Temple as our guest minister for the
Hanamatsuri Weekend (19-20 May,
2014). A public lecture will be held on
Saturday, April 19 at 3:00 pm followed
by our Hanamatsuri Pot Luck dinner
starting at 5:00 pm.
Expansion
of temple services
continues with the 1st service being held
on the first Thursday in March at The
Maples Residence. This was attended
by 20 residents with one half being non
Japanese. In April, tea and refreshments
will be served after the service by 2 or
3 Fujinkai members.
Hanamatsuri
The Hanamatsuri service will be on
Sunday, April 20th with the Dharma
School service beginning at 10:00 am
followed by the Hanamatsuri service at
10:30 am.

The
Steveston
Buddhist
Temple
established a Legacy Fund a couple of
years ago to receive donations which
would then be used for major expenditures
or projects of benefit to the temple and
its members.

The 2014 Keirokai was held on
Sunday, March 16, 2014 to honour our
senior members and Bingo volunteers.
98 seniors and some juniors were in
attendance. Seniors were warmly greeted
and beautiful corsages were pinned by
Sharon Sakai, Lynne Sakai-Boden and
Lisa Hirose-Cameron.

newly elected President, Bud Sakamoto
proposed a toast and wished everyone
good health.

The highlight of Keirokai was the
introduction of the seniors by decades,
70’s, 80’s and 90’s and the bingo
volunteers. It was wonderful to see all
the seniors still fit and hardy. Bouquets
were presented to the oldest female,
Eiko Kokubo age 96, and oldest male,
Toshio Murao age 94. These seniors
then cut our celebration cake.
The final part of the program was
the draw for a couple of gift baskets
donated by June Ikuta, a Safeway gift
certificate donated by Jack Kawabata and
a message board from an anonymous
donor.
The winners were:
Hanako
Oye, Hayao Sakai, Terry Sakai and
Etsuko Izumi.
The afternoon came to an end with
full stomachs and wonderful memories.
We also carried
home a package of mikasa manju
made by our temple members.
The other volunteers working behind
the scenes were led by Larry Ryan to
set up the tables and stage, and, after
everyone left they set up the gym for
Wednesday night Bingo.
Another Keirokai celebration was happily

法のともしび
花祭りを前に
雨の降るのも、風の吹くのも、花の咲くのも、葉
の散るのも、すべて縁によって生じ、縁によって
滅びるものである。この身は父母を縁として生
まれ、食物によって維持され、また、この心も経
験と知識とによって育ったものである。だから、こ
の身も、この心も、縁によって成り立ち、縁によ
って変わると言わなければならない。
（仏教聖典81ページより）
この清々しい春の日に記事を書きながら事務
所の窓から眺めると目の前にお寺の正面にあ
る桜の木が咲き始め、改めてわが仏教会の美
しさに心がうたれます。また、この時期はお寺で
「花祭り」の季節となります。
「花祭り」とは、約2500年前に現在のネパー
ルの南部にあるルンビニ園という場所で、後に
お釈迦様となられるシッダルタ王子が世に誕生
されたことをお祝う法要です。誕生された時に
は天より甘茶のような雨がふり、花びらが一面
に降ってきたと言われていますので、法要でシッ
ダルタの誕生像を安置する花御堂に甘茶と花
を捧げます。赤道に近いルンビニ園では桜みた
いな樹が咲いていたかどうかは分かりませんが、
日本やここスティーブストンではこの時期は特に
桜の美しさに酔わされます。
桜は昔から日本を代表する花であり、ちょうど
今頃はお花見の季節が始まるころです。そうい
えば、去年の今頃にお寺の表にある桜の花の
あまりの美しさに引かれた日本人のグループが
お庭にブランケットを広げてお弁当を食べなが
ら、お花見を楽しんでいました。以前読んだ本
の中に、「日本人が桜にロマンを感じるのは、
一斉に満開に咲く花の美しさと、また一瞬に散
ってしまうはかなさを同時に味わえ、そしてそこ
にはわびさびの世界の魅力がある」と書かれて
いました。これもまた仏教の深い影響を受けて
いると思います。
そこで、上記の仏教聖典より引用された文書
はお釈迦様の言葉であり、花が咲くのも散るの
も、すべて「縁」によって成り立っていると説かれ
ています。一般に「縁」という言葉は、人と人が
巡り合うときによく使われたりしますが、それは「
縁」という言葉の片側だけを表しています。桜
の花に同時に感動と未練を味わえるのもすべ
て「縁」によるのではないでしょうか。

銀色っぽい車が生田先生宅とお寺に駐車されているの
に気が付かれたかもしれません。実は、先生の車を買
い替えたのです。そこで最近の大きな支出に関してお
知らせ致します。ホンダ・アコードは17年間も先生方の
足となってきました。１９７７年に購入され、あまり故
障もなく、整備費もまあまあでした。しかしこれから先、
安全に運転できるようにするには修理費がかなりかかる
と見込まれますので、仏教会理事会は今買い換えた
方が良いという結論に達しました。
どのに買い替えるかについて、車購入委員会が先生
を含む、経理会計担当とシニア役員監査役によって
作られ、車種の選択、資金をどうするか等が検討さ
れました。その結果、マツダ３が推薦されました。車の

4月19日～-20日の花祭法要にバンクーバー仏教会の阿久根ロバート先生をお招きし
ました。午前10時から、日曜学校、午前10時半からは、花祭り法要が始まります。10
時からの花祭り日曜学校に参加希望されるお子様がいらっしゃいましたら、お寺にお知ら
せ下さいませ。 4月19日(土) の午後3時から講習会がそして、午後5時からポットラック
デイナーがあります。皆様お揃いでご参加下さいませ。

仏教会の多額な支出やお寺の福祉プロジェク
トをカバーするために、スティーブストン仏教会
レガシー・ファンドは2年前に設立されました。
それ以来、皆様からの寄付金を受け付けレガ
シーファンドに宛がってきました。2年間に渡って
の合計金額は、お蔭様で$39,734になりまし
た。そのうち$30,000が婦人会からの寄付に
よるもので、残りの＄4360は、去年行われま
した50周年記念からの皆様の寄付によるもの
です。婦人会と寄付を下さった方々には心より
感謝申し上げます。有難うございました。
尚、このレガシーファンド福祉プロジェクトには2
つの企画があり、その一つは除細動器の購入
です。除細動器は心室・心房細動を除いた
り、心臓が止まった時に即使用され医療器具
で、蘇生にかなりの効果があります。人目につ
く使いやすい場所に設置いたします。二つ目の
プロジェクトは身障者用のトイレの設置です。
キッチンの向かい側の女性用トイレは今後、男
女共用身障者用トイレになり、女性用のトイ
レはジムに行く廊下のみになります。会長で建
築家でもある坂本バッド氏が設計図と費用の
見積もりを現在検討しています。改築の進行
状況は随時お知らいたします。
お寺の改善のために、何か好いアイディアがご
ざいましたら是非お知らせ下さいませ。

降誕会と初参りのお知らせ
日時：5月4日(日)午前10時半
親鸞聖人（しんらんしょうにん）のご生誕を祝
う降誕会（ごたんえ）に併せ、初参りを行い
ます。尊いご縁により、この世に生まれたことを
共に祝いましょう。初参りは、昨年度から今年
に産まれたお子様に限らず、満三歳までのお
子様でしたら、どなたでもお参りできます。当日
参拝くださったお子様には、仏教会よりお祝い
の品を用意しております。初参りを希望される
方は、4月３0日までにスティーブストン仏教会
へご連絡下さいませ。

10時から、映画を上映。小津安二郎監督、
東京物語です。是非、お友達をお誘いの上い

敬老会　―　ベレスフォード・テリー、森下エルマー
2014年の敬老会が3月16日に行われました。シ
ニア会員とビンゴのボランティアの方たちに敬意を表
し、98人のシニアと数名のジュニアが参加いたしまし
た。サカイ・シャロンさん、サカイ・ボーデンさん・リンさ
ん、ヒロセ・キャメロン・リサさんが参加者の胸に、素
敵なコサージュをつけて差し上げ歓迎しました。司会
の生田氏がシニアと新会長の坂本バッド氏を歓迎
し、皆の健康を祝して乾杯いたしました。
美味しいランチは、ふじやのお弁当、お寺自家製の
味噌汁とマグロのお刺身でした。ボランティアされた
皆様に心から感謝致します。ご協力有難うござい
ました。
お食事の後、じゃんけんゲームをしました。各テーブル
ごとじゃんけんに勝ち抜いた人が、センターピースに飾
られた美しい花をもらいました。幸い、喧嘩も無くけが
人も出ませんでした。次にオカノニコールさんがまとめ
た過去の懐かしい敬老会のスライドショーを見て、楽
しかった思い出などを語り合い、和やかなひと時を過
ごしました。今年の敬老会のカメラマンはメール・ライ
ナー氏で、沢山の写真を撮って下さいました。

会は、中津毅氏の詩吟で始まり、とてもかわいい宝
島の子供たちの合唱は微笑みを誘いました。次に初
出演のエクレストン・キコさん、平野香織さん、ウラッ
ド・ミサオさんと清水マサコさんのキーボードによるハミ
ングバードコーラスが美しい歌声で演出して下さいま
した。、最後は童謡のメドレーで締めくくり、多くのシ
ニアも一緒に歌いました。お馴染みの庄司ホノカちゃ
んがハープを弾いてくれました。演奏して頂く度、上
達していくホノカちゃんに聞き取れていたシニアの皆さ
ん、きっと彼女を応援していることでしょう。皆様の熱
唱と演奏、心が和み素敵でした。ご協力、心から感
謝致します。
さて、敬老会のハイライトは70代、80代、90代の

様がご健在でおられるのは素晴らしいことです。女
性の最年長者の小久保エイコさん(96歳)、男性の
最年長者の、村尾俊夫氏(94歳)には花束が贈ら
れ、記念のケーキが小久保さんと村尾氏によって切
られました。
生田ジューンさんが寄付して下さいましたギフト・バ
スケット2個、川端ジャック氏が寄付して下さいまし
た、ギフト券、匿名の方の寄付によるメッセージボー
ドのドアプライズもあり夫々、大江ハナコさん、酒井
隼雄氏、サカイ・テリー氏、泉エツコさんが当選されま
した。おめでとうございました。美味しいご馳走と楽し
い思い出が詰まった午後も終わり、三笠まんじゅうを
お土産に帰途につきました。楽屋裏ではライアン・ラ
リー氏が率いるボランティアの方々が会場の準備や
後片付けをし、人々が去った後、翌日のビンゴの準
備もしました。
今年も成功裏に敬老会が終わったのも多くのボラン
ティアの皆さんのお蔭です。阿久根イトコさん、阿久
