On the weekend of May 30 & 31,
the World Buddhist Women’s Convention JULY Team 5
was held in Calgary, Alberta. The theme Lead: Hirose, Ted

Convention
We are enjoying one of the nicest
spring and early summer with endless
sunshine and very little rain. Are these
normal fine weather conditions in the
cyclical nature of our climate or is it
the result of global warming?
I do
remember many early strawberry seasons and the warm
afternoons in early June when all the windows in the
school classrooms were open but it was still too hot to
listen to the teachers.
Calgary, May 30 and 31
After many years of planning, this convention now
is in our memories, but what wonderful memories they
are! The theme “Embraced by the oneness of life”
was exemplified in this diverse gathering of delegates
from Japan, US, Hawaii, Brazil and Canada, by the
keynote speakers, panel discussion and workshops.
Although the roots of the majority are from Japan, the
presence of non Japanese was clearly evident with
Caucasian ministers and delegates.
Looking towards the North Shore mountains, reveals
bare mountain tops without the normal display of last
winter’s snow. Without the rain and the snow melt,
how dry can our mountains become before adversely
affecting life forms?
In the short term, stress may
be beneficial, however long periods of drought may
devastate many living forms of life.
Women were in the forefront with keynote speakers,
Rev. Nana Yanase on Saturday and Rev. Patricia
Kanaya Usuki on Sunday. Both speakers brought
unbidden tears to the listeners...Rev. Yanase as she
spoke about facing uterine cancer at the age of 29
and realizing that this probably meant no marriage
or children at a time when her friends were getting
married and starting families.
Rev. Usuki spoke
about the conflicting feelings she had as her career
became more successful and seeing how having
power changed people.
In recorded history, civilizations have been destroyed
by climate change.
The Mayan and Angkor Wat
Empires were wiped out by the lack of rain fall due
to change in climate. If our climate is changing, how
will Richmond deal with a twenty foot rise in the sea
levels?
Should we relish in the fortunes of our good weather
or should we be humbled by the interconnectedness of
all living beings and care about the human impact on
our environment and on our spaceship “Earth”? Can
we all live and enjoy life with a lot less impact on our
fragile earth?
A variety of workshops were offered on Saturday
afternoon centred on the Eight Fold Path.
One
could attend two different sessions. Gagaku music,
perspectives from First Nations, Qi Gong, naikan, line
dance, Buddhism in Canada and history of women in
Japan were some of the topics. After the sessions,
we had free time so we chose to visit the Glenbow
Museum, specifically the Raymond Buddhist Temple’s
butsudan. While sitting in front of the butsudan, we
met relatives of Maya Whittier. The three sisters and
a husband were from Utah and California.
Volunteering at the World Womens’
Buddhist Convention

Maya Whittier, Annette Scott (daughter of Miyuki
Toyoda) and I volunteered to help during the weekend
of the World Womens’ Buddhist Convention in Calgary. I
had arrived in Calgary early in order to visit with family
so I attended an orientation on the Wednesday night
leading up to the convention. I met with other volunteers
and we were introduced to the event planner and her
staff. T-shirts were given out and explanations on
how to assist guests were discussed. On the Saturday
morning, Maya, Annette and I met at the convention.
We were shown the area we were to seat attendees
and then the convention began. Annette was busy with
both ushering and helping at the Marketplace where
delegates could purchase items for souvenirs. Maya,
Annette and I were enjoying our volunteering since
we met many old friends and acquaintances and we
also enjoyed the many speakers. That evening at the
banquet, we again assisted with helping people find their
seats for dinner. Sunday, seating was the same as it
was on Saturday, but interpretation mobiles had to be
given out again as well as collected throughout the day
since some of the delegates were
leaving early for their flights. The whole event ran so
smoothly and Susan Huntley and the Calgary Buddhist
Temple as well as members from the Southern Alberta
Buddhist Temple as well as the event planner did a
wonderful job with the whole weekend. As busy as we
were some times during the convention, we were all
inspired to agree that we would attend the next World
Womens’ Buddhist Convention in San Francisco in 2019.
The Saturday banquet and entertainment ended the
first day on a high note. Dinner companions were
a mixture of Canadians, Americans, Japanese and
Brazilian delegates. We were often the lone Canadian
at a table but everyone made a wonderful effort to be
congenial. The theme “Embraced by the oneness of
life” came to mind. Those at my table could hardly
wait until the exchange of omiyage! The highlight
of the entertainment was the Osaka Choir and its
saxophonist. They visited our Steveston temple on
their journey home and those present were fortunate
to have the saxophonist perform.
The Sunday schedule started with the White Hat
Ceremony with white cowboy hats being presented
to the VIPs. This was followed by a very formal
but brief World Buddhist Women’s Association annual
general meeting. Rev. Usuki gave her keynote speech.
After lunch, the panel discussion and closing service
were held. The panel moderator was Sylvia Oishi
from BTSA with panel speakers representing the four
countries. At the conclusion each country left the
hall in order with Canada leaving last. A Canadian
contingent formed a line to say farewell. At the end,
the Canadians had given away their cowboy hats and
scarves which were popular items.

On Sept. 13 we will be having our annual pancake
breakfast. But instead of breakfast we are going to
make it a brunch. Dharma school will have our service
at 10:00 AM and while the adults have their service,
the kids and teachers will be making pancakes for after
their service. Anyone attending the 10:30 AM service
is welcome to have brunch with us. Please ask your
parents and grandparents to join us in the fun.

Our Obon weekend is
just around the corner. Bon
Odori practices have already
begun starting on Monday,
June 1st and continuing on
every Monday and Friday
evenings leading up to the
Obon weekend in July.
Practices start at 7:00 pm. We would like to encourage
as many people as possible to come and learn the Bon
Odori dances as both a fun activity as well as a way
to learn the culture of paying gratitude to our ancestors.
Moe No Kai
Keiko Go
Thank you again for coming to Moe No Kai. We
had a wonderful gathering in the month of June.
We made decorations for Obon dancers, played games
and had luncheon together. I would like to thank
everyone for attending Moe No Kai and those who
volunteered to organize this club. Special thank you
to Sachiko Takeuchi , Tomoko Kakehi,
Kazuko
Niguma and Kisako Matsuno for your help.

On the weekend of August 8 – 9, Rev. Ikuta will
be leading the annual Obon Cemetery Visitation to
Vancouver Island. Over the course of two days, Rev.
Ikuta will be visiting cemeteries in Chemainus, Nanaimo,
Cumberland, Port Alberni, Duncan and Victoria.
If you are interested in joining this most spiritual
journey in which we pay our respects to pioneer Nikkei
individuals who spent their lives on Vancouver Island,
please contact Rev. Ikuta.
VISION
20/20
In many meetings over the past 18 months, the
20/20 Committee has worked with many groups to
create a concept for our temple’s future, that will allow
the temple to start offering more daytime programs for
seniors in our community.
At Obon, we will have information, architects’ drawings
and members of our committee to present what we have
done so far. After the Obon service we will be happy
to answer questions and explain what we have come
up with so far.
Based on your feedback at Obon, we will ask our
partners to create a final design that we will take to our
members for a vote at a special AGM in September.
If approved by members at this special AGM, we will
sign a contract and approach the City for approval.
We hope to see many of you at the information
session and look forward to your feedback. We will also
start taking names of those who think they might want
to live in this new building!

Gateball is Hot
On Saturday, June 27th, 5 teams competed for the
Vancouver Shinpo Cup. The tournament was held on
the front lawn of Nikkei Place.
It was a beautiful
setting with trees, a pond and a waterfall surrounding
the playing area. Although it was a hot sunny day
with very little shade for the players, we all managed
in the heat, played well and enjoyed the camaraderie.
The winners were team Nakatsu. Photos were taken
and there should be one in the Vancouver Shinpo so
keep your eyes open. All the other teams received
consolation prizes so no one went home empty handed.
The next tournament is the Steveston Buddhist Temple
Cup which will be held on Saturday, July 11th , starting
at 9:00 am at the Steveston Buddhist Temple. Please
come out to see our players in action.

Congratulations to
Naoki Hirano Sensei
Special Movie Presentations
In the summer of 2012, we had the good fortune to
show the Japanese documentary movie “Umareru – To
be Born”, about the life of four couples as they go
through the process of giving birth. It has been shown
at a number of international film festivals, including the
Montreal Film Festival.
The movie was made by the Japanese director,
Tomo Goda and narrated by the Japanese actor Takeshi
Tsuruno. We are happy to announce that the director,
Tomo Goda, has released a new documentary entitled,
“Umareru – zuuto issho” or “To be Born – and to
be together forever” and that he will be coming to
Vancouver this summer to show his new documentary.
Once again, we are
very fortunate to have
been asked to show
“Umareru
–
zuuto
issho” at our temple.
The documentary movie
will be shown at our
temple
on
Sunday,
August
2nd
starting
at 7:00 pm. Director
Tomo Goda will be on
hand and will have a
question and answer
session following the
movie.
We will also be airing
the original documentary,
“Umareru” on Sunday,
July 26th at 7:00 pm,
for those who may have
not seen the first one,
or for those who wish
to refresh their memory
before
seeing
the
second
documentary.
Although the second
documentary is not a
complete sequel to the
first one, some of the
individuals from the first
documentary are also in
the second one as well
so it would be a good
idea to see the first
one before seeing the
second one.
We hope you will
be able to join us
for both weekends to
see this most moving
documentary series.
Both movies include
English subtitles.
On May 16th, 2015, Mr. Naoki Hirano successfully
passed his Tokudo Ordination and became a priest of
the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha. Hirano Sensei has
been active in our temple and will now be joining
Roy Akune Sensei and Shinobu Fukakusa Sensei as a
Minister Assistant at our temple. The Steveston Buddhist
Temple would like to congratulate Hirano Sensei for his
dedication and we look forward to having him share his
understanding of the Buddha Dharma
Temple Clean Up
On Sunday, June 28th, the Steveston Buddhist Temple
conducted its annual summer cleanup.
Volunteers
started to arrive around 8:00 am. At 9:00 am, we had
a short service. Grant Sensei remarked that it is quite
common for members to come together to clean and
maintain their temple.
After the service the 40 or so volunteers went off in
different directions. One group looked after the hondo
and the naijin. One group worked on the grounds
trimming and weeding. Another group washed the gym
floor, took off the old wax and then applied a new
layer of wax.
Another group worked on fixing the
bingo tables, sanding the surface and applying a varnish
finish. And another important group was the Fujinkai
ladies who not only cleaned up the kitchen but also
prepared a delicious lunch for the volunteers.
It was hard to come back to work on a full stomach
but we did, just in time to welcome a group for an
afternoon wedding.
Thank you to everyone who came out to make our
temple shine like the jewel it is.
Father’s Day Sleepover
On a perfect evening, on June 20th 2015, 14
children and 7 dads pitched tents and slept over for the
annual fathers’ and children’s sleepover. The weather
was perfect for the sleepover and all involved enjoyed
the evening highlighted by the bonfire with wiener
roasts, hot chocolate, and roasting marshmallows to
make smore’s sandwiches. In the morning, the children
enjoyed pancake breakfast with the dads, which was
followed by the Dharma school service and potluck
Father’s Day picnic. Thank you to Rainer and Rev.

Eventually, we were able to convince the National
Board that we could host such a convention in Calgary
and everyone came on board to support the Convention
Planning Committee. As it turned out, thanks to the
dedicated and hard work by so many people, the 15th
World Buddhist Women’s Convention was a rousing
success.
I sometimes think about what would have happened
had we gone ahead and pulled out from hosting
the Convention all together. Conversely, what positive
influences has hosting the convention done for the
Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada. The time
and effort involved in preparing for the convention has
brought together members from across Canada and has
provided a sense of great pride in being associated
with our organization. But perhaps, most importantly, it
has established a deeper sense of appreciation for the
Nembutsu teachings.
Going forward, Canadian Jodo Shinshu followers will
be welcomed at other international conventions and
events because of the wonderful job we did as hosts.
And we can hold our heads high for putting on such a
meaningful event. Thank you to all who were involved.

2015 60TH Convention Annual & General Meeting
September 19 -20, 2015
‘The Mosaic of Buddhism’
The Steveston Buddhist Temple is honoured to host the 60 th Annual BCJSBTF Convention over the weekend of
September 19 & 20, 2015.
The theme for the Convention will be ‘The Mosaic of Buddhism’. In the June 12th edition of the Vancouver Sun
Newspaper there was a front page article on how Richmond is the most multi ethnic city in Canada with over 60% of
the population being born outside of Canada. This diversity in population is also represented in the Buddhist
Community as Richmond is home to temples from around the world.
For the 60th BCJSBTF Convention, we will be exploring the rich mosaic of the many temples, mosques, ashrams, and
churches that exist side by side on No. 5 Rd. in Richmond. We are presently in the process of arranging a bus trip to
visit several of the facilities that has created a unique hub of world religions, leading the area to be commonly
known as the “highway to heaven”.
Come join us as we learn about the world of Religion within our own city.

会長からのお知らせ

今年は今までになく素晴らしい春と、ほとん
ど雨のないお天気続きの初夏を皆様楽しんで
おられることと思います。これは自然の気候
のサイクルがもたらす普通の素晴らしいお天
気なのか、それとも世界的な温暖化のせいな
のでしょうか。昔、6月の初めにイチゴの時
期の早い到来と暑い午後が続き、教室の窓を
全部開けてもまだ暑く先生の話もろくに頭に
はいらなかった事が何シーズンもありました。
北側の山々を見ても、普通見られる去年の雪を残した山はな
く、むき出しの頂上だけが見られます。雨や雪解け水がない
と、生物に悪い影響を与える前に、山はおお枯れになるでし
ょう。短い期間ならばストレスはいいこともありますが、干
ばつはいくらかでも長く続くと生物を荒廃させるでしょう。
文明が気候の変化で破壊されたことが歴史に記録されていま
す。マヤ文明とアンコール王朝は気候変動による雨量不足の
ために消滅しました。もし、私達の気候が変化しつつあるな
ら、リッチモンドは海面が20フィートも上昇したらどのよう
に対処するのでしょうか。
私達はこの素晴らしい気候に恵まれたことを楽しめばよいの
か、それともすべての生物とつながっていることを謙虚に考
え、私達の環境と私達の宇宙船「地球」に人類が与える影響
についてもっと注意をすべきなのでしょうか。この壊れやす
い地球にあまり衝撃を与えずに皆が楽しく生きられないもの
でしょうか。

平野直樹さん得度おめでとうございます
去る5月16日に平野直樹さんが京都にある西本願寺にて御門
主様より得度式を受け,本願寺の僧侶となりました。これか
らは、阿久根ロイ先生と深草しのぶと一緒に生田開教使を支
える、当仏教会の開教師補として活躍されます。平野先生得
度おめでとうございました。そして、これからもお寺の為に
御指導をよろしくお願いいたします。

次の方がご逝去されましたので、生前のご苦労を偲び、
謹んで敬弔の意を表します。

またお盆の季節が参りました
先週末、お盆前にお寺の大掃
除を執り行いました。まずこ
こに皆さんにお礼を申し上げ
ます。皆様の御蔭でお寺はき
れいになりました。掃除して
いるうちにノートの整理をし
ていたら、2012年度の7月の
記事がたまたま目に入りまし
た。面白いことに、2012年
の夏はとても寒くて、記事の中でそのことに触
れていました。今年はそれと正反対であり、猛
暑と乾期に悩まされている。雨が降ってくれな
いかなと思う人も少なくないと思います。
この暑さは日本のお盆の季節を思い出させま
す。私がまだ日本で留学をしていたころの出来
事でした。お盆の季節にアルバイトとして、北
九州市にあるお寺でお盆参りの手伝いをした時
の事です。日本ではお盆の季節にお寺さんが全
ての門徒さんのお宅を訪ね、各家庭の仏壇の前
でお盆参りをする風習があり、大きなお寺にな
ると2,000件以上の門徒さんのお宅を参らなけ
ればならないところもあります。とても住職だ
けでは参りきれないので、お坊さんになろうと
している学生を雇い、お盆参りのアルバイトを
やらせてもらいました。三日間で約100件のお
宅、つまり1日に33件くらい回りました。初日
に地図を渡されて、回らなければならない地域
に朝一番に連れていかれて、一日中家から家へ
と転々と回って行きます。まず玄関で「浄徳寺
からお盆のお参りに伺いました。」と挨拶をし
た後仏間に案内してもらい、仏壇の前で「讃仏偈」を唱え、
少しお話をして次の家に行きました。大体各家庭に20分程
度の訪問が平均でした。多くの門徒さんは同じ近所に住み、
お参りは隣から隣へと歩いて回りました。毎朝7時から夜8
時半くらいまで回っていました。初日を終えた時、声はガラ
ガラで、足は正座しすぎでパンパンに張っていた覚えがあり
ます。若さのおかげで何とか3日間無事に勤めました。
この3日間で、ある一件の家を訪問した時の事が印象に残り
ました。そこには一人の年配の女性が住んでいました。彼女
は数年前に御主人を亡くし、二人のお子さんも成人して別々
に暮らして、お参りした当時は一人暮らしでした。仏間にご
案内してもらい、お参りの準備をしていた時、彼女が「私は
毎日主人や亡くなった親たちの為にお経をあげています。」
と嬉しそうに言いました。「それはとてもいいことですね。
」と私が返事をした後、彼女が「でも、私は難しい漢文のお
経ではなく、日本語に訳されているお経をあげているのです
が、それでもかまわないでしょうか？」と聞かれました。「
ええ、それでも御立派ですよ。」と答えたら、彼女が最後に
一言つぶやきました。「だって、主人も亡くなった親も日本
人ですから、難しい漢文を読んであげても分かるわけがない
からね。」それを聞いた瞬間私は自分の中ではっきりと「彼
女はお経を唱える理由を誤っている。」と思ったことを今も
覚えています。学生であった自分は理屈だけで考え、浄土真
宗の御教えは先祖崇拝を認めず、お経を上げるのは阿弥陀様
の尊い御教えをいただくご恩報謝の為に唱えるものであると
思っていたからです。
しかし、それから25年の歳月が過ぎて、多くの方とのお別
れなどを通して、あの時何も分かっていなかったのは彼女で
はなく自分であったことが、今になって笑いながら思いだせ
るようになりました。彼女は亡くなられた御主人や御先祖様
を偲び、そしてその方々のお導きによって立派に阿弥陀様の
御教えに出会われておられたのです。それに比べて私の理解
は本当に浅いものでした。
後二週間で当仏教会のお盆法要があります。「お盆」は先
に亡くなったご家族やご先祖を偲び、その方々を通して阿弥
陀様の御教えに逢えた喜びを味わう大切なご縁でもありま
す。ですから、今年も盆踊りやお盆法要をお念仏に出会えた
報謝の気持ちで、多くの皆さんと一緒に迎えたいと思ってい
ます。是非、踊りにも法要にも来て頂けるよう、お願い念じ
申し上げます。

世界仏教婦人会議でのボランティア活動

ウィッティア・マヤさんとスティーブンス・アネットさん
（トヨダ・ミユキさんのお嬢さん）と私はカルガリーでの
WBWCがあった週末にボランティアをしました。水曜日の
晩に何をするか指導があり、他のボランティアや企画責任者
と彼女のスタッフに会いました。皆にTシャツが配られ、訪
問者をどのように援助するかを話し合いました。
土曜日の会議で私たち3人が会いました。私達は参加者が座
る場所と参加者に渡す通訳機を見せてもらいました。アネッ
トさんはマーケットプレイスで参加者を誘導したり彼らがお
土産を買うのを手伝っていました。私達はボランティアをし
たおかげ旧友や知人に会え、またゲストスピーカーの話も聞
くことができました。その晩も参加者達が自分たちのディナ
ーテーブルを探すのを手伝いました。
日曜日は参加者の座席は前日と同じでしたが、通訳機を手渡
したり、早く帰る人達からそれらを回収したりしました。
ハントレー・スーザンさん、カルガリー仏教会、それに南ア
ルバータ仏教会の皆様が企画責任者と共に運営したこの行事
は全てがとても順調に行きました。会議の間はとても忙しか
ったですが、2019年のサンフランシスコでの世界仏教婦人
会議に参加するというアイディアに皆鼓舞されました。「サ
ンフランシスコにこの意気込みを持って行きましょう！」
仏教会での映画上映
8月2日（日）午後７時より、3
年前に上映させていただいた『
うまれる』の続編『うまれる　ずっといっしょ』を特別上映い
たします。この度も前回と同じ
くゲストとして映画を監督され
ました、豪田トモ監督を日本か
らお招きいたしております。こ
の映画はドキュメンタリーの素
晴らしい映画です。尊い命、
絆、感謝、愛情などについて、
色々と考えさせられ、きっと皆
様は感動することでしょう。英
語の字幕も出ますので、是非お
誘いの上お越し下さいませ。
7月26日（日）午後7時より、最
初の作品『うまれる』を前回見
逃した方、あるいは思いだすた
めに再上映いたします。本堂で
上映されます。上映後は体育館
にてお茶菓子などを出しますの
で、どうぞ最後までいらして下
さいませ。尚、映画は無料とな
りますが、お志を承ります。
カルガリーで5月30日と31日に行われた
2015世界仏教婦人会議
何年もかかって計画したこの会議ももはや過去の思い出とな
りました。でも、なんと素晴らしい思い出でしょう！　会議
のテーマである「抱かれてともにつながる私の命」は日本、
アメリカ本土、ハワイ、ブラジル、カナダからの様々な人達
や、基調講演、パネルディスカッション、ワークショップ等
で余すところなく示されました。　参加者の多くは日系人で
したが、白人の開教使や代表もかなり見受けられました。
基調講演は、土曜日はヤナセ・ナナ開教使が、日曜にはウス
キ・カナヤ・パトリシャ開教使が行い、二人の講演は聴衆の
涙を誘いました。ヤナセ開教使は彼女が29歳の時に直面した
子宮がんの話をしました。彼女は友達が結婚し家庭をきずい
た時には自分は結婚も子を産むこともできないだろうと思い
ました。ウスキ開教使は彼女の仕事が成功するにつれ、権力
がどのように人を変えるかという自らの矛盾する感情につい
て話しました。
土曜日の午後は八正道についての様々なワークショップがあ
りました。一人で二つのセッションに出席できました。雅
楽、ファースト・ネイションの話、キゴン、内観、ラインダ
ンス、カナダにおける仏教、日本女性史等の話がありまし
た。セッションの後には自由時間があり、グレンボウ博物館
とレイモンド仏教会の仏壇を見学しました。仏壇の前に座っ
ている時にウィッティア・マヤさんの親戚に会いました。3
人姉妹とそのうちの一人のご主人はユタ州とカリフォルニア
州から参加しました。
第1日目の土曜日はディナーと余興で終わりました。ディナ
ーではカナダ、アメリカ、日本、ブラジルからの参加者が交
じりあいました。私達はしばしばテーブルで唯一のカナダ人
でしたが、私達が居心地のいいように皆が努力をしてくれま
した。会議のテーマである「抱かれてともにつながる私の
命」が心に浮かびました。私がいたテーブルでは誰もがお土
産の交換を待ち遠しく思っていました。余興のハイライトは
大阪コーラスとそのサキソフォン演奏者でした。彼らは大阪
に帰る前にスティーブストン仏教会を訪れ、たまたま仏教会
にいた人たちは素晴らしいサキソフォンの演奏を聴くことが
できました。
日曜日は白いカウボーイハットをVIPに贈呈するホワイト・
ハット・セレモニーで始まりました。その次に、短いけれど
正式の世界仏教婦人会の年次総会があり、ウスキ開教使が基
調講演をしました。昼食後にパネルディスカッションとクロ
ージング・サービスがありました。パネルの司会者はBTSA
のオオイシ・シルビアさんでパネリストは4か国の代表者で
した。最後は各国の参加者が順に去り、カナダが最後に去り
ました。カナダの参加者は一列に並び皆様にお別れを言いま
した。最後に、カナダ人は人気があったカウボーイハットと
スカーフを皆様にさし上げました。

ゲームをして、夏前の打ち上げ
パーティーをしました。早くも今年も半年が過ぎ、皆様健康
で参加してくださったことに感謝

して松野きさこさんには毎回お手
伝いをしていただき、心より感謝をしています。どうぞ皆様
