I hope all of you have had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. As for me, SEIZA MEDITATION: August has been busy, with three weddings and the Obon cemetery Thursdays @ 7:30pm visitation to Vancouver Island (Please & Fridays @10:30am read Obon Cemetery visitation report). It was an unusual, but pleasant month as YOGA with Alanna I conducted three wedding ceremonies - Mondays & Thursdays @ 5:30pm and no funerals. All three weddings were - Saturdays @ 9:30am Chair Yoga unique in their own right and for this month’s article, I’d like to share with you a little of the experiences I SEPT: Team 2 encountered. The first wedding was on August 1st, held at Stanley Lead: Sakai, Mitts Park with the ceremony taking place in the Rose 604-273-7603 Sundays 10:30 AM Garden and the reception held at the old Brockton Members: Cricket Club. The wedding ceremony was interesting Araki, Ron Regular Service unless noted: as there were quite a number of other wedding parties Inouye, Mike all congregating around the same area to take their Inouye, Masako Tue Sept 8, 7:30 PM wedding pictures. It almost felt like the Old MacDonald Kondo, Kaoru Mutually Sustaining Life Seminar song, “with a wedding party here and a wedding party Kondo, Norman Mon Sept 14, 7:30 PM there, here party, there party, everywhere a wedding Mukai, Akiko party…” The setting was truly a beautiful backdrop for Nagata, Kazuo Board Meeting a wedding ceremony and the venue for the reception Nagata, Sayoko Wed Sept 16, 11:00 AM was also interesting as the Brockton Cricket Club is Sakai, Kay Nikkei Home Service steeped in history. The only unfortunate thing about Sakai, Lynn Thu Sept 17, 10:00 AM this wedding was that the couple had planned it for Toyoda, Miyuki Moe No Kai the same date as the final day of the Festival of Lights OCTOBER: Team 3 Fireworks, with Canada presenting the fireworks for Lead:Tabata Toshiyuki Thu Sept 17, 2:30 PM the evening. I happened to leave the wedding reception 604-271-6102 Maples Residence Service just around the same time as the fireworks were Members: Sept 18-20 concluding and there couldn’t have been a worst place Matsuno,Seishi, BCJSBTF Convention to be for traffic than at Stanley Park. It was bumper to Matsuno, Kisako Tue Sept 22, 7:30 PM bumper traffic and it took me well over an hour to get Matsuno, Tommy Mutually Sustaining Life Seminar home. Matsuno, Yoko The second wedding ceremony was literally far Okada, Rumi Sun Sept 27, 10:30 AM out, as I was asked to conduct a ceremony at the Sakamoto, Bud Higan Fall Equinox Service Timberline Lodge, on Mt. Hood, Oregon. The lodge Tabata, Mieko Thu Oct 1, 2:30 PM itself is situated at 6,000 feet elevation and you could Tani, Kiyoshi Maples Residence Service feel your heart pounding with the lack of oxygen. You Tani, Mutsumi may ask yourself, how in the heck did I get invited to Watanabe, Keiko Sun Oct 4, 10:30 AM conduct a wedding in Oregon? Well, as it turns out Yamashita, Setsuko Shotsuki Monthly Memorial there were a couple of connections which made it quite logical for me to conduct the ceremony. First, Areas to be cleaned: the mother of one of the individuals getting married was the former president of the Spokane Gymnasium: dry mop/ sweep floor. Wet mop Buddhist Temple and had thought favourably of me when I visited there several years ago where necessary as their guest speaker for Obon. Second, and more importantly, the marrying couple had just moved to Vancouver earlier this year as one of them was enrolled in a Masters Program at Classroom: dry mop floor, wipe tables, UBC. Having connected the dots, I was all set to conduct the wedding. By the way, I forgot to mention that this was going to be the first same-sex marriage ceremony that I would be Hondo: Dry mop floors around and under pews involved with. Having established that I was going to conduct the wedding, the next question was, how Kitchen: Wet mop floors am I going to get down to Mt. Hood? As many do in this day and age, I started my research by using Google Maps to figure out how long it would take for me to drive there. Just over 6 hours according to Google Maps. To fly there, I would have to go to the airport 2 hours in advance (recommended for travel to the US), take the plane to Portland (1 and a half hours once I get my bags) and someone would have to pick me up at the airport and drive me to Mt. Hood which is another hour and a half away from the Portland Airport. Total time flying there Contact: would be roughly 5 hours, so it made sense to drive and have the freedom to come and go at Miyuki Toyoda my own schedule. As some of you may have already guessed, (Continued on p.5) Wednesdays @ 6:30pm MONTHLY TOBAN GROUPS COMING UP: FUJINKAI TOBAN #2 1 DHARMA LIGHT President’s Message FUJINKAI Once September arrives, Toban 2 Bud Sakamoto (contact: Miyuki Toyoda) will have one month remaining of tasks to be done. In October, Toban 3 (contact: Itoko Akune) will be taking its turn until end of January 2016. During the summer, Hiroko Kawamoto of Toban 2, Mary Murao and Patty Tipple have been busy helping out at Wednesday’s bingo nights until the Kendo and Judo ladies arrive around 6 pm. The regular helpers have been away more than usual in July and August due to family commitments and vacation so this extra help has been appreciated. Thank you very much. Upcoming Fujinkai events are: 1.Semi annual AGM on Sunday, September 27 at 1 p.m. Guest speaker will be Mandy Ling from the Richmond Hospital Foundation. Following her brief talk, the members will discuss matters of concern to the Fujinkai. Attendance by Fujinkai will be appreciated as input is invaluable. One does not have to be a member of a toban to attend. 2.Craft Fair on Saturday, November 21. The past two years, this has been held on the 1st Saturday in November but attendance by the public has not been great so decision was made to move the date to later in the month. Application forms have been mailed to last year’s crafters but more crafters are needed so please spread the word around. Table rental has been a reasonable $25 since the beginning of our craft fair. Food products always sell well. Assistance will be appreciated at the coming BCJSBTF convention on September 19 and 20: baking for Sunday’s continental breakfast (muffins , scones, etc.) and coffee breaks (cookies, squares, etc.) SPECIAL AGM & VOTE I hope everyone is enjoying the long and pleasant summer. As you are all aware this weather is unprecedented with such very little rain. The sunshine is very nice, however we do need the rain and when it comes, will we really appreciate the moisture and water as being essential for all living beings and plants. At this time of the year with the start of a new school year we often try to introduce new programs and activities. This year starting in the second week of September we are introducing YOGA. If you are interested please check the information in this newsletter for details. The art classes introduced several years ago will begin again in the middle of September. For those interested in joining the classes, the program will be catered to individual need and abilities. The regular art classes are held on Wednesday at 7:00 pm and possibly in the morning at 10:00 am if three or more registers. Please contact myself at 604 274 4799. We are open to new ideas and programs for the temple. Please feel free to make suggestions for adding new activities to the temple. I look forward to hearing from you. Please call the number above. In gassho, Bud Sakamoto 2015 Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery Visitation Tour – A Journey of Awakening On the weekend of August 7 – 9, Bud Sakamoto, my mother, my daughter, Erin and myself, were joined by 5 others from Victoria as we travelled to six communities throughout Vancouver Island for the annual Obon Cemetery Visitation Tour. The journey began on the Saturday morning in Nanaimo, where we held a service at the local cemetery for the Japanese Canadians who were interned there. This was followed by a service at the residence of one Mr. Makoto Fukui who welcomes us every year so that we may conduct the Obon service for the local residence in the Nanaimo area. After the service and a brief visit with the locals, we continued on our journey making our way up to Cumberland. For the past several years, we have been graciously invited to lunch with Mayor Leslie Baird and Councillor Roger Kishi and his wife, Catherine. The lunch with the Mayor Baird and Councillor Kishi, has become one of the highlights of the trip as they are so friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, the cemetery visitation in Cumberland was hampered by rain, so the attendance was not as large as in previous years. Day one of the trip came to an end with a service at the cemetery in Port Alberni. Over the past four years that I have been involved with the Obon Cemetery visitation, the Port Alberni Cemetery has always seemed lonely as there has not been any local representation when we visited the site. This year as well, there was no one from the local community in attendance, though we did notice that someone had recently visited the site as there were fresh cut flowers placed by the memorial marker. I don’t know if it was someone locally who had placed the flowers, or someone who happened to be visiting the Port Alberni area, but either way it was nice to see that others have been visiting the site as well. VISION 20/20 Over the past 18 months, the 20/20 Committee has worked hard to create a concept for our temple’s future, that will also allow the temple to start offering more daytime programs for seniors in our community. At Obon, we presented this information, architects’ drawings and members of our committee were present to answer questions and explain what we have come up with so far. Nineteen people put their names on a list of individuals who might want to move into the building. In September members will get a mailed notice for a special AGM, where you will get the chance to ask more questions and then vote to continue this project. We hope to see many members at the special AGM, and will do our best to answer questions in both English and Japanese! In gassho, Rainer Mehl, Chair BCJSBTF raffle tickets We would like to ask everyone to return sold/unsold raffle tickets and top white page intact along with money/ cheque to the temple at your earliest convenient. The due date was on August 28th. Winners will be announced at the BCJSBTF Steveston Buddhist Temple Banquet on September 19, 2015. Thank you for your participation and dedication in sharing the Buddha Dharma. 2 SEPTEMBER 2015 UPCOMING EVENTS Moe No Kai Day two of our journey began in Chemainus, with a service at the local cemetery. Prior to the service, our group cleaned the memorial marker and tidied up the area around it. This was when I noticed that there was also a memorial marker for the members of the Chinese community who were interned in the cemetery. Being good neighbours, we also cleaned their marker as well. Once we finished with the visit to the Chemainus cemetery, we headed down to Duncan for their cemetery visitation. There, a group of several local Nikkei families joined us for the service. The cemetery in Duncan is quite unique and interesting as it was on the grounds of an old Presbyterian Church so the headstones of the Nikkei individuals were protected and not desecrated as in some of the other cemeteries. Because of this fact, the cemetery in Duncan has aged naturally, which has created its own unique situation. It must have taken decades for it to happen, but right in the section where the Nikkei graves are situated there is a large Maple tree which has grown out of the spot where several headstones exist. In fact a couple of the headstones have been pushed aside by the tree to the point where they look like they may topple over at any moment. The uniqueness of this tree, however, is that the branches spread out creating a natural umbrella shading almost perfectly all of the graves where the Nikkei people are buried; giving the tree the appearance of being a gentle protector overseeing the site. The pilgrimage of visiting the cemeteries on Vancouver Island came to a fitting close with the Obon Service at the Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria. Just over 50 people were in attendance for the service which has become part of the annual activities of the local Nikkei community in Victoria. For the past several years, the local Nikkei community has been organizing events in conjunction with our annual visitation. While our group was still visiting the other cemeteries on the Sunday morning, the Victoria Nikkei community was busy cleaning up the grave sites of all of the Nikkei graves in the Ross Bay Cemetery and preparing for the Obon Festival which followed the service at the cemetery. The Obon Festival started several years ago hosted by the local Nikkei Society of Victoria at the Ross Bay Villa (a house belonging to the cemetery) located just across the street from the cemetery. The festival includes performances of Japanese Folk Songs, Taiko Drumming and of course Bon Odori. It is truly gratifying to see the local Nikkei Community of Victoria come together to organize this Obon Festival in conjunction with our annual visitation. I hope it is something they can continue on for years to come. The Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery visitation continues to be a wonderful spiritual journey which allows us the opportunity to not only pay homage to our Nikkei pioneers, but to recognize that they were individuals who helped forge the history of our country of Canada. The annual Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery visitation tour is one that I would highly recommend for anyone interested in taking a spiritual journey. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s journey. In Gassho, Grant Ikuta Keiko Go September Moe No Kai will be changed to Thursday, Sep. 17th. at 10am. We have lots of ideas for the fall Moe No Kai again this year. Please bring your friends and enjoy Moe No Kai morning. See you soon. Yoga at Our Temple We are very happy to introduce a new yoga class being offered at our temple. The classes will be offered by Ms. Alanna McConnell, who is the granddaughter to Mr. & Mrs. Hayao and Tomiko Sakai. Alanna has quite an extensive career in teaching Yoga, having taught for over 11 years. She has a Bachelor’s of Science in Food, Nutrition and Health and is also certified by the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association to lead group fitness classes and work with older adults. She used to lead a falls prevention fitness class at Rosewood Manor, and has been running her own Yoga studio in the Minato shopping complex. Alanna is planning on offering general Yoga classes on Mondays and Thursdays starting September 14th. The following is a schedule for the two sessions: • Monday session start: September 14th from 5:306:45pm for 6 consecutive weeks (except for October 12th- Thanksgiving Day), ending on October 26th. • Thursday session start: September 17th from 5:306:45pm for 6 consecutive weeks, ending on October 22nd. A third Yoga program, known as Chair Yoga Session, would be conducted on Saturday mornings beginning on September 26th and running for six weeks. This Chair Yoga will be run as a drop-in style class geared more towards seniors in our community. The cost for the Saturday sessions would be through donations to the Temple (suggestion of $5 -$10 per session). The classes would be 45 minutes in length starting from 9:30 – 10:30 am. If you are interested in any of the above programs, please contact Rev. Ikuta and he will provide the contact information for Ms. McConnell. The temple is very grateful to have Alanna join us in providing the Yoga classes. In the near future, we hope to be able to expand our programming to provide other activities and classes for the community at large. Bingo is Alive and Going Strong. Dharma School We hope you all had a great summer. It sure was warm. September 13 - Dharma school will be having our pancake brunch. After service all are invited to join us. While the adults are attending the service, the children will be making pancakes for brunch (or breakfast for those that haven’t eaten yet). We hope you will join us. See you all for the new school year. 3 Summer has come to a close and we enjoyed the warm, sunny weather. As we start the fall season, we would like to say thank you to the volunteers from the Judo Club and the Kendo Club who help us at Bingo during the summer. Your efforts are greatly appreciated as we could keep Bingo going in the summer and give our regular Bingo helpers a well deserved break. The summer break is all too short as we welcome our regular helpers back. Thank you for your dedication and hard work. We must thank all the Bingo players for coming out regularly to support our temple and to play Bingo with a chance to win big and small cash prizes. We wish you good luck in the coming weeks and hope you hit a big jackpot or two. What it didn’t take into account is a very busy border crossing taking close to an hour and a half to get across the border, this was followed by crawling traffic from the south end of Seattle right through to south of Tacoma. It actually took me closer to 9 hours driving there. Once I finally arrived there, though, I must say I was moved by the beauty of the mountain. It was definitely one of the most spectacular sites that I have been for a wedding. As for the ceremony itself, even though it was my first involvement with a same-sex marriage, everything went beautifully. The vast majority of the guests were non Buddhists and I had so many individuals come up to say how much they enjoyed the simplicity, yet very meaningful ceremony. The third and final wedding ceremony I was involved with this past month, took place this past weekend at our temple. It was a wedding ceremony for an East Indian couple. The accommodate the bride’s side and a Buddhist ceremony on the Saturday to accommodate the groom’s side. The groom’s family belonged to the New Indian Buddhist Society founded in the 1950’s by Dr. Bhimaro Ramji Ambedkhar (1891-1956), who was born in the north-eastern part of India, belonging to a family in the ‘untouchable class’ of the Hindu Caste system. Ambedkhar received a scholarship to study abroad at Columbia University in New York, where he received his Ph.D. in 1916. In 1936 Ambedkhar formed the Independent Labour Party, and in 1947 was appointed Minister of Law of the first government of India and was the author of large parts of the Indian constitution. However, his attempts to bring about a thorough reform of Indian Civil law met with strong opposition, and in 1951 he withdrew from the government. In 1950 Ambedkhar made his allegiance to Buddhism official. He said that Buddhism is preferable to all other religions because it is based on wisdom and compassion, not on superstition and supernatural beliefs. Because in Buddhism the concepts of love, equality and spiritual freedom are essential parts of its message and 5 create true equality amongst all the people of India. The ‘New Buddhist Society’ was formally created in 1956. Through this final wedding ceremony, I learned that there are around 150 East Indian Buddhists in the Vancouver area and that they don’t really have a temple to call their own. They were so overjoyed that we welcomed them into our temple and conducted the ceremony for them. The president of the Society told me after the ceremony that we had just created history as it was the first Buddhist wedding ceremony for their community. They made me realize how fortunate we are that our pioneers had the foresight to build such a beautiful temple as ours. The members of the ‘New Indian Buddhist Society’ were so happy with the ceremony that, when they left, came up to me to say this will definitely not be the last East Indian wedding to be held at our temple, as long as our membership allows it. As we start preparing for the fall activities at our temple, I look back fondly on the summer of wedding bells. It sure was a nice change to have so many weddings and no funerals.
