Members of i-News Dana Kelly Hi! I’m Dana Kelly, a longtime fan of beautiful Imabari, having spent 3 weeks here in 1997, one week each in bustling downtown Imabari, tranquil Tamagawa mountains and scenic Chikami by the sea. How lucky I was to live in traditional and contemporary homes, to drink green tea in an afternoon coffeehouse, fish for trout and cook it over a fire, travel to nearby towns like Sai Jo City & Matsuyama, practice with a tea ceremony, eat many tasty foods, soak at KurHaus, learn about historical shrines, speak English or a little Japanese with new friends. I cherish my memories and ongoing friendships with my three beloved host moms-Kieko, Akiko, & Kazuko, who inspired my love for Imabari city. I have been with Lakeland Sister Cities twenty years, watching our twinning grow from its 1995 infancy. At every chance, I enjoy sharing the richness of learning about our Imabari friends. I have attended many Sister City National Conferences, helped with student exchanges, served as vice-president, education liaison, newspaper editor, youth chair and special projects chair in our organization. I have worked with our State Department and National offices to promote world unity and international progress. In 2003, I received “National Sister Cities Volunteer of the Year”, an honor. I’ve taught 35 years, holding four college degrees, first working with children with disabilities and then with the intellectually gifted (superior intelligence). I am fortunate to have been inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 2002, the most prestigious teacher award in America, as well as recognized with Time magazine, USA Today and Disney Teacherrific awards in other years. I have been active with the American Red Cross Disaster Teams and VISTE, a local service group to help elderly people stay independent in their own homes. I’m single, with five siblings and 7 nieces/nephews. I’m fortunate to have my mother living nearby. My hobbies are writing, geneaology, ethnic cooking, languages, swimming and travel. I hope to continue to build a strong Lakeland-Imabari relationship by sharing stories in I-News and interacting with students through our annual exchanges. Please come see us in Lakeland.
