Introduction The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is internationally famous for the quality and impartiality of its news items. BBC reporters also strive to make the news both interesting, and as easy to understand as possible. In this book we have chosen 15 items that we think would be of particular interest. Most are about Britain, as you might expect, but many of the issues covered, such as health, education and the environment are generally familiar to Japanese learners. There are also some important international issues, and topics that are included because they give a fascinating insight into a different culture. It is hoped that the items will be motivating, and that students will be eager to watch and listen because they are interested in what they are discovering. New and important items of vocabulary are introduced, and the notes (in Japanese) will explain any interesting and important points of grammar and usage of English. However, perhaps the most important purpose of this book is that the learners should be able to engage in the subject matter, and then discuss it and research into it together. With this in mind, we have developed discussion questions that would encourage them to relate these new discoveries with what is already familiar to them in Japan.
