一人で学ぶ場合
If you are reading this booklet by yourself…
普通の本のように読んで下さい。各章の冒頭および最後の質問はグループでの話し合いにぴったりの内
容ですが、それらの質問を通して、各章で学んだ内容の理解を深めることができるでしょう。必要でなけれ
ば、質問は飛ばしていただいても大丈夫です。
Feel free to simply read it like any other book. The warm up questions and discussion
questions are designed for use in a group setting, and are interesting. They might help you
to catch on to the concepts presented in each lesson. But don’t get hung up on them, and
feel free to skip them as well.
グループに参加する場合
If you are participating in a discussion group of some sort…
学ぶ際に、わからない事があればぜひ質問してください。最初からすべてを理解できなくても大丈夫で
す。学校のようにテストはありませんので、焦らず、自分のペースで、キリスト教のテーマである愛について学

Feel free to stop and ask questions along the way. You probably won’t understand
everything the first time you hear it, and this is fine. You’re not in a classroom, and there is
no test coming. Don’t be in a hurry. Don’t feel any pressure. The Christian message is a
message of love. Try to enjoy yourself as you learn.

本書は様々な場面で使用できます。グループを導く際にもご利用ください。以下が基本的な本書の利
用方法です。
You might be reading this book together with a friend, or e ven with a group of friends. This
book was designed to be used in a variety of settings. Feel free to get creative with it if
you’d like. But if you’re looking for a basic approach, here are some helpful suggestions.
1) 「はじめに」の質問をする
Take some time to "warm up."
「はじめに」の質問は、各章の内容に関連しています。質問は学びに対する準備以上に、和やかな雰
囲気作りに役立ちます。グループ内の関係作りはとても大切です。もし質問内容がグループに合わないと
思ったら、質問の代わりにお互いに自己紹介をするのも良いでしょう。ぜひ関係作りを重視してください。
The provided warm-up questions relate to the study content, to get your mind turning in the
right direction. But more importantly, they help to create a friendly atmosphere. Getting to
know each other and getting comfortable with each other are an important part of the
process. If these questions don't feel natural for the group you're with, you might choose to
go around the room and casually introduce yourselves, or just chit chat for a bit. Just make
sure to connect with each other relationally as much as possible.
2) 声を出して、交代でテキストを読む
Take turns reading the main study portion out loud.
グループで学ぶ際も、テキストは一冊あれば十分です。必要なだけ時間をかけて質問をし、内容を明確
に理解できるようにしてください。目標は、学んだ内容を頭に叩き込むことではなく、聖書の内容をじっくり
学び理解することです。
Only one book is actually needed, even for a group setting. Stop often to take questions
and clarify what’s being said. The goal is not to pound out a lesson, but to take in and
process the ideas of the Bible in a meaningful way.
3) 最も興味深い質問をする
Cover whatever discussion questions seem most interesting to you.
本書にテストはありません。質問を通していろいろと考え、本書で扱いきれない内容を話し合うことが本
書のねらいです。神学者ほどの知識は必要ありません。自分の知識や体験を分かち合うことで、周りの人
も祝福されるでしょう。
This is not a drill or a test. The questions are meant to stimulate thinking and to surface
further explanations that cannot be covered in a booklet this short. Don’t pretend to be an
expert. Just share what you understand and what you’ve experienced. That’s the stuff that
will bless others.

序文 Introduction
大学時代のルームメートが、聖書を持っていました。彼が留守の間、聖書を本棚からこっそり取り出して
読んだことがあります。「キリスト教って何だろう？」と思っていましたが、誰にもそのことを悟られたくありませ
んでした。聖書を読み終わった後はいつも、何事もなかったかのように聖書を本棚に戻していたものです。
I had a college roommate one time who had a Bible on his bookshelf. I remember reading it
a number of times when he wasn’t around. Just for a few minutes. I wanted to see what the
book actually said -- What’s Christianity all about? But I didn’t want anyone to know it. Each
time, I made sure to put the Bible back perfectly as if it hadn’t been touched.
大学時代の私のように、興味がないふりをして、キリスト教について知りたいと密かに考えている人は少
なくないと思います。
Many people are like that. They wouldn’t say they’re interested in Christianity, but they kind
of are. They’d like to take a peak, but only if it’s safe.
キリスト教に興味を持つ人が、小さな「最初の一歩（ファーストステップ）」を安心して踏み出す手助けを
するために、本書は作られました。高度な内容ではなく、キリスト教の基礎的な内容を扱っています。学ぶ
上で、キリスト教についての知識は全く必要ありません。自分のペースで学べます。
First Steps was designed for exactly that kind of person. It’s small, safe steps. It’s basic
information. It covers the key points of Christianity, not the advanced concepts. And it’s
made for a beginner. You don’t have to know anything about Christianity to enjoy it. And the
pace is nice and slow.
一人で本書を学んでもいいですが、クリスチャンの友人や小グループの仲間と一緒に学ぶのが、もっとも
効果的です。クリスチャンの友人に、わからない点を質問するとよいでしょう。
The book is most helpful when read together with a Christian friend, or in a small discussion
group. This gives the chance to ask questions and talk through the concepts with someone
who has travelled a bit further down the path already. But of course, the content makes
sense if you want to just read it straight through as well.
知らない土地を旅する時、親切なツアーガイドがいてくれると助かります。ファーストステップは皆さんの信
仰の旅のツアーガイドです。情報収集をして、景色を楽しみながら旅を進めましょう。旅の行程で、聖書に

Whenever we venture into unknown territory, it feels nice to have a friendly tour guide
leading the way. First Steps can be that kind of a guide for you. Start by enjoying the
scenery and gathering some information. Along the way, there’s a good chance you’ll
discover a relationship with the God of the Bible, who loves you more than you could know.

Chapter 1: What is God like?
はじめに Warm Up
「キリスト教って何だろう？」そう思っている方は多いと思います。その問いにこのテキストは答えます。テキ
ストの内容はとても基礎的で、複雑でも、議論的な内容でもありません。あくまでも聖書の内容に基づい
ていて、世界中のクリスチャンが信じている事を取り扱っています。まずはじめに、クリスチャンが神をどのよう
にとらえているか見てみましょう。
“What’s Christianity all about?” That’s the topic of this book. We’re going to look at the
basic teachings of Christianity. Nothing complex or controversial. Just the basic ideas that
Christians all over the world believe, straight from the pages of the Bible. Let’s start in the
obvious place. What is the Christian view of God?
聖書には、神は私たちの想像を超えて、美しく、優しく聖なる方だと書かれています。はじめに、以下から
質問を選び、それについて自分の思ったことを自由に話してみてください。
The Bible describes a God that is more beautiful, kind and holy than we can imagine. As a
warm-up exercise, choose one or both of the following questions to discuss, and spend
some time in friendly conversation, giving each person a chance to share.
1.　崇拝するとは、何かを崇めたり、何かに愛情を示したり、献身することを意味します。過去にロックス
ターや俳優、もしくはスポーツ選手などを「崇拝」したことがありますか？その体験について話してください。
When we worship something, we offer our heart’s adoration, affection, and devotion. Have
you ever “worshiped” a rock star, actor or athlete? In the past or present, who have you
“gone crazy” over? Share.
2.　他の人があなたのことを一語で表すとしたら、どんな言葉を用いてほしいですか？
If other people were asked to describe you in one single word, what word would you hope
that they would use?

神様はどんな方？ What is God really like?
誰かを個人的に知らなければ、その人がどんな人であるかを理解するのは難しいものです。しかし、もしそ
の人についての話を聞いたり、情報を得たり、その人と親しい人を知っているなら、その人をもっと正確に理
解できるでしょう。
Sometimes, until you get to know someone personally, it’s hard to say what they’re really
like. But if you hear some stories, gather information, and especially if you know a close
acquaintance of the guy, you can start to assemble a pretty accurate picture of them.
それでは神はどうでしょう？神にインタビューするのは難しいかもしれませんが、世界中には神を愛し、崇
拝する人が大勢います。神は優しく、辛抱強く、けれども強く、厳しい方です。キリスト教は神の性質につ
いてどのように教えているのか見てみましょう。
So... what about God? It’s hard to get a first-hand interview with Him! Yet, we know that
millions around the world love to worship Him. He appears to be strong, strict, tender and
patient, all at the same time. So let’s take a look. What does Christianity actually teach
about God’s personality?
神の優しさ The kindness of God
はじめに、特筆すべき神の性質を挙げてみたいと思います。
For starters, here are some of God’s important emotional qualities.
神は愛 God is loving
愛のない者に、神はわかりません。なぜなら神は愛だからです。Ⅰヨハネ 4:8
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8
神は憐れみ深い God is compassionate　しかし主よ。あなたは、あわれみ深く、情け深い神。怒るのにおそく、恵みとまことに富んでおられます。
詩篇 86:15
But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in
love and faithfulness. Psalm 86:15
神は慈悲深い God is merciful
あわれみと赦しとは、私たちの神、主のものです。これは私たちが神にそむいたからです。ダニエル 9:9
The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.
Daniel 9:9
神は喜びに満ちている God is joyful　なぜなら、神の国は飲み食いのことではなく、義と平和と聖霊による喜びだからです。ローマ 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness,
peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17
神は良い方 God is good

Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

神の偉大さ The greatness of God
これらの性質に加えて、いかに神が偉大で素晴らしい方かわかる神の特性をいくつか以下に挙げておき
ます。
In addition to these emotional qualities, here are a handful of qualities that describe how
immense and amazing God is.
神は全てを知っている God is all-knowing
なぜなら、神は私たちの心よりも大きく、そして何もかもご存じだからです。 Ⅰヨハネ 3:20
For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:20
神には何でもできる God is all-powerful　神にとって不可能なことは一つもありません。ルカ 1:37
For nothing is impossible with God. Luke 1:37
神はどこにでもいる God is everywhere　私はあなたの御霊から離れて、どこへ行けましょう。私はあなたの御前を離れて、どこへのがれましょう。
たとい、私が天に上っても、そこにあなたはおられ、私がよみに床を設けても、そこにあなたはおられま

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the

神は永遠に存在する God is eternal　どうか、世々の王、すなわち、滅びることなく、目に見えない唯一の神に、誉れと栄えとが世々限りなく

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and
ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17
神は完璧 God is perfect　神、その道は完全。主のみことばは純粋。主はすべて彼に身を避ける者の盾。Ⅱサムエル 22:31
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all
who take refuge in him. 2 Samuel 22:31
神の聖さ The holiness of God
神は優しく、何でもできるだけでなく、完全な誠実さと聖さを持ち合わせた方でもあります。
Besides being kind and mighty, God is also the ultimate expression of integrity and purity.
神は聖い God is holy　互いに呼びかわして言っていた。「聖なる、聖なる、聖なる、万軍の主。その栄光は全地に満つ。」イザ
ヤ 6:3
And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole
earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3
神は正しい God is righteous　主は正しく、正義を愛される。直ぐな人は、御顔を仰ぎ見る。詩篇 11:7
For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face. Psalm 11:7
神は賢い God is wise　知恵と力とは神とともにあり、思慮と英知も神のものだ。ヨブ 12:13
To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his. Job 12:13
神は正義 God is just　主は岩。主のみわざは完全。まことに、主の道はみな正しい。主は真実の神で、偽りがなく、正しい方、
直ぐな方である。申命記 32:4
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does
no wrong, upright and just is he. Deut. 32:4
神は誠実 God is faithful　神は真実であり、その方のお召しによって、あなたがたは神の御子、私たちの主イエス・キリストとの交わ
りに入れられました。 Ⅰコリント 1:9
God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. 1
Corinthians 1:9
神についての記述は聖書にいくらでも書かれていますが、今までに挙げたポイントを読んだだけでも神の
基本的な性質は大分つかんでいただけたのではないでしょうか。
Of course, drawing from the Bible, hundreds of descriptions could be listed here. But for
now, we have a good “snapshot” of God’s basic personality.
自分に当てはめてみよう Application
この章を振り返り理解するために、以下の質問について話し合ってみましょう。
As a way to reflect on and process the lesson, spend a few minutes discussing the
following questions.
1.　神の特徴の中でどの部分が最も信じ難いと思いましたか？それはなぜですか？
Which of the discussed character traits strike you as hard to believe? Why?
2. 神が実在し、ここに挙げられた全ての特徴を持っていることが証明されたとします。そうであれば、心か
ら神を崇拝し、神に仕えることはたやすいと思いますか？それともまだ難しいですか？それはなぜですか？
Imagine that we could somehow “prove” that God exists, and that he does indeed embody
each of these traits? Would you then find it easy to whole-heartedly worship and serve him?
Or would it still be difficult? Why?
祈り Prayer
祈りは恐れる必要のない、とても単純なものです。一人でも他の人と一緒でもよいので、声に出して次
のように祈ってみてください。
Prayer is an extremely simple idea that should scare no one. The following prayer is
designed for the beginner. Whether individually, or with a group leader, simply read aloud
from a sincere heart.
あなたを私に示してください Reveal yourself to me...
神様、もしあなたが本当にいて、良い方で、私を愛してくれているなら、あなたのことをもっと知りたいで
す。どうかあなたを私に示してください。アーメン。
God, if You are real, if You are good, and if You indeed love me, I want to know You.
Please reveal Yourself to me. Amen.
２章　キリスト教の何が良いの？(前編)
Chapter 2: What’s so good about Christianity?
(Part 1)
はじめに Warm Up
この章では、キリスト教の良いところについて説明していきます。神は良い父親のように私たちを祝福した
いと願っている、と聖書では教えています。はじめに、以下から質問を選び、それについて自分の思ったこと
を自由に話してみてください。
This lesson explains the great things about Christianity. The Bible teaches that, like a good
father, God desires to bless us. As a warm-up exercise, choose one or both of the
following questions to discuss, and spend some time in friendly conversation, giving each
person a chance to share.
1. お買得商品を買ったり、または信じられないようなセール品を見つけたことがありますか？その体験を
話してください。
Can you remember finding an unbelievable “bargain,” where a product you bought was
worth far more than you paid for it? Share the story.
2. いつも新品を買いますか？それとも中古品を買って、お金を節約することを好みますか？どんな物な
ら新品で買い、どんな物なら中古品でも喜んで買いますか？
Do you always buy new? Or do you like to save money by buying used? What kind of
products will you only buy new, and which are you happy to buy used?
聖書の言葉 Word
お得な話 What a deal!
キリスト教のもっとも基本的な特徴は「関係」です。１章で述べたように偉大な神は、私たちと親密で個
人的な関係を持ちたいと願っています。私たちが自分の小さく、ボロボロで、不純な心を捧げると、神は代
わりに自身の大きく、寛容で、美しい心をくださいます。こんないい話ありますか？
The most basic aspect of Christianity is “relationship”. The amazing God described in
chapter one wants to have a close, personal relationship with us. We give our small,
broken, impure hearts. He gives us His huge, generous, and beautiful one. Talk about a
great deal!
神がこんなに良くして下さったことを私たちが忘れないようにと、聖書に書いてあります。
And because the exchange is so lop-sided, so generous on God’s behalf, scripture
encourages Christians to always remember the benefits we enjoy.
わがたましいよ。主をほめたたえよ。主の良くしてくださったことを何一つ忘れるな。詩篇 103:2
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Psalm 103:2
しかし、それは非常に大変なことです。なぜなら、私たちが受ける祝福は、数え切れないほど多いからで
す。このことを心に留めて、主からの大きな三つの祝福について見ていきましょう。
But if you really think about it, that’s a tall order. The benefits are too many to count! With
that in mind, let’s look at three of the main benefits.
神との関係 A Relationship with God
1章で、神は愛にあふれ、憐れみ深く、慈悲深く、喜びに満ち、良い方であると記しました。また、神は全
てを知っていて、何でもでき、どこにでもいて、永遠に存在し、完璧で、聖く、正しく、賢く、正義で、誠実で
あると、キリスト教は教えています。このような友人は他にいるでしょうか？これらの資質を持った神が私た
ちと親しい、密接な関係を築きたいと願っているのです。まさかと思うかもしれませんが、これこそがキリスト
教の中心となる教えであり、最高の祝福なのです。
If you skipped chapter one, go back and take a quick peek. Christianity says that God is
loving, compassionate, merciful, joyful, good, all-knowing, all-powerful, everywhere, eternal,
perfect, holy, righteous, wise, just, and faithful. Do you have any other friends like that?!
And this God desires a relationship with you and I. A personal relationship. An intimate
relationship. Yes, it sounds crazy. But this is at the heart of Christianity. This is the biggest
benefit of them all.
呪いからの解放 Freedom from curses　病気、鬱、貧困、離婚、薬物乱用。これらの出来事は時として自分の行いによってもたらされます。原
因がわからないこともあります。聖書には、呪いと霊的な戦いは実在すると書かれています。
Cycles of bad luck. Sickness. Depression. Poverty. Divorce. Substance abuse. Sometimes
these conditions are brought on by our own doing. But at the same time, we know that
some people suffer under such burdens for unknown reasons. The Bible teaches about the
reality of curses and spiritual warfare.
26)見よ。私は、きょう、あなたがたの前に、祝福とのろいを置く。27)もし、私が、きょう、あなたがたに命
じる、あなたがたの神、主の命令に聞き従うなら、祝福を、28)もし、あなたがたの神、主の命令に聞き
従わず、私が、きょう、あなたがたに命じる道から離れ、あなたがたの知らなかったほかの神々に従って
行くなら、のろいを与える。申命記 11:26-28
26) See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse – 27) the blessing if you
obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today; 28) the curse if
you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn from the way that I
command you... Deuteronomy 11:26-28
5)それらを拝んではならない。それらに仕えてはならない。あなたの神、主であるわたしは、ねたむ神、わ
たしを憎む者には、父の咎を子に報い、三代、四代にまで及ぼし、6)わたしを愛し、わたしの命令を守
る者には、恵みを千代にまで施すからである。出エジプト 20:5-6
5) I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the
fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6) but showing love to a
thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. Exodus 20:5-6
難しい内容ですが、キリスト教は罪、呪い、そして罰が存在することをはっきりと認めています。慈悲深い
神は、私たちを救いたいと願っていますが、同時に正しさを求めるので、私たちが罪を完全に償うことを求
めています。しかし、ありがたいことに、神は驚くべき解決策を与えてくれたのです。神の子、イエス・キリスト
は人間となって、この世に生まれました。ありとあらゆる葛藤や誘惑を体験しましたが、決して罪を犯しませ
んでした。何の罪も欠点も無かったからこそ、私たちに代わって私たちの罪を完全に償うことができたので
す。私たちの身代わりになって、イエスはすすんで拷問を受け、十字架の上ではりつけにされました。私た
ちの罪の代償をイエスが払ったことで、神の怒りはおさまったのです。
Though it’s a difficult topic, Christianity acknowledges the realities of sin, curses and
punishment directly. God, in His mercy, desires to spare us. But in His justice, He demands
the appropriate penalty to be paid in full. Thankfully, God came up with an amazing solution.
God Himself became a man, Jesus Christ. He lived on earth as a man, and faced every
kind of human struggle and temptation, but was without sin. He was flawless and without
fault, which made Him the perfect substitute for us. On our behalf, Jesus freely volunteered
to be tortured and killed on the cross. God’s wrath was satisfied when Jesus paid the full
penalty for our disobedience.
キリストは、私たちのためにのろわれたものとなって、私たちを律法ののろいから贖い出してくださいまし
た。なぜなら、「木にかけられる者はすべてのろわれたものである。」と書いてあるからです。ガラテヤ
3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is
written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” Galatians 3:13
いろいろな定めのために私たちに不利な、いや、私たちを責め立てている債務証書を無効にされたから
です。神はこの証書を取りのけ、十字架に釘づけにされました。コロサイ2:14
God canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and
condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:14
私たちの罪をイエスが完全に償ってくれたのです。イエスには、あらゆる呪いや罪を取り除く力があります。
The price for sin has bee paid. Jesus has the authority to remove every kind of curse, and
every residual effect of sin in our lives.
変えられる人生 A changed life
神が私たちの罪の後始末をしてくれて、私たちは何もする必要がないなんて、キリスト教はなまぬるい！
と思うかもしません。純粋にキリストを主、救い主として受け入れる人は例外なく二つのことを体験します。
変わりたいと思う気持ちを起こさせる神の愛と、私たちが瞬時もしくは徐々に変わる事を可能にする神の
力です。
At this point, you might think that Christianity seems too easy! God takes care of the mess,
and we don’t have to do anything. In reality, the person who genuinely receives Christ as
Lord and Savior experiences two things: God’s love, which motivates towards change, and
God’s power, which enables us to change, both instantly and incrementally.
キリストは聖なるものとされる人々を、一つのささげ物によって、永遠に全うされたのです。ヘブル 10:14
By one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Hebrews
10:14
というのは、私たちをご自身の栄光と徳によってお召しになった方を私たちが知ったことによって、主イエ
スの、神としての御力は、いのちと敬虔に関するすべてのことを私たちに与えるからです。Ⅱペテロ 1:3
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our
knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3

Christianity is unique because it directly addresses the issue of sin and punishment. Rather

To many people, Christianity seems too good to be true, and they wonder, “What’s the
catch?” How difficult is it for you to imagine a God that would willingly suffer for you, just
because of love?

This lesson continues to look at the great things about Christianity. As a warm-up exercise,
choose one or both of the following questions to discuss, and spend some time in friendly
conversation, giving each person a chance to share.
1.　子供の頃、もらって一番嬉しかったプレゼントは何ですか？プレゼントをもらって、喜びのあまり、誰かに
抱きつきたくなったことはありますか？その体験について話してください。
As a child, what is the best gift you ever received? Which gift made you jump for joy, or run
into someone’s arms? Share the story.
2.　誰でも人を傷つけます。誰かを傷つけた後、｢ゆるします｣と言われたのにも関わらず、長い間根に持た

We’ve all offended others. Can you think of a time when, after offending someone, they
said they forgave you, but in reality, they held it over your head for a long time? On the
other hand, is there a time when your offense was 100% totally forgiven? Share a story or
two.

前の章ではキリスト教の良いところを三つ見ました。すなわち、神との関係、呪いからの解放、そして人生
が変えられることです。神と親しくなるということはそれだけでも非常に価値のある事ですが、神はそこでとど
まらず、良い父親らしく、良いものを次から次へと私たちに与えてくださるのです。
In the previous lesson, we looked at three of the stunning benefits of Christianity: a
relationship with God, freedom from curses, and a changed life. God could stop right there,
and the idea of entering into a relationship with Him would be more than worthwhile. But
why should He stop with those three? Like a good father, He loves to pile it on.
やりなおすチャンス A chance to start over
熟成していくワインや、使っていくうちになじんでいく野球のミットのように、時とともに良くなるものもありま
す。しかしやはり、新品は特別な気分にさせてくれます。クリスチャン人生とは、そのようなことを意味しま
す。つまりただ私たちをきれいにするだけでなく、真新しくしてくれるのです。神は、私たちの心を変えてくれる
のです。
Some things get better with time, like a good wine or a favorite baseball mitt. But at other
times, there’s just something special about that “brand new” feeling. The Christian life offers
a beautiful opportunity in this regard. More than “cleaning us up,” God makes us brand new.
He changes our heart on the inside.
だれでもキリストのうちにあるなら、その人は新しく造られた者です。古いものは過ぎ去って、見よ、すべて
が新しくなりました。 Ⅱコリント 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has
come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
罪の赦し Forgiveness of sin
どんな社会でも、住民の経歴が重要な法的記録として残ります。何年か経てば、交通違反の記録は
忘れられるかもしれませんが、重罪を犯したら、その記録は一生ついてまわります。天国にも同じ様な記
録があります。大きな犯罪についてのみならず、小さいことに関しても記録が残ります。ありがたいことに、
キリストによって私たちの罪は完全に取り除かれるのです。
In every criminal system, there are important records where citizens’ legal histories are
kept. After a number of clean years, driving violations may be erased, but when a person is
convicted of serious crimes, the records permanently. Heaven also has these kinds of
records, not only for big violations, but little ones as well. Thankfully, Christ made a way for
all of our sins to be erased forever.
神は、善であれ悪であれ、すべての隠れたことについて、すべてのわざをさばかれるからだ。伝道者の書

For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is
good or evil. Ecclesiastes 12:14

But [Christ] was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the
punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Christ has paid the penalty in full. He now has the legal right to forgive us, and He chooses
to do so. He doesn’t hold our record over our heads! Instead, He desires reconciliation.
恥からの解放 Freedom from shame
人間特有の感情の一つである恥には、私たちを麻痺させる力があります。行動することや目立つことへ
の恐れから、人は良いものを受け取ることができなくなります。しかし、クリスチャンはいつでも胸を張って、自
信を持つことができます。なぜなら、完全に正しい者とされ、赦されていることを知っているからです。
One of the most unique human emotions, shame has the power to paralyze us. It even
stops us from receiving good things, because the pain of moving or the fear of being
noticed is too intense. Christians have the unique opportunity to hold our heads high,
knowing that we are fully justified and forgiven.
あなたがたは恥に代えて、二倍のものを受ける。人々は侮辱に代えて、その分け前に喜び歌う。それゆ
え、その国で二倍のものを所有し、とこしえの喜びが彼らのものとなる。イザヤ 61:7
Instead of their shame my people will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace
they will rejoice in their inheritance; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land,
and everlasting joy will be theirs. Isaiah 61:7
後悔 Regrets
私たちはよく、はっきりした罪でないとしても、生きていく上で取り返しがつかないと思われる過ちを犯しま
す。自分に合わない職業や結婚相手を選んでしまうと人生は耐えがたいものになります。しかし、キリスト
を自分の人生に受け入れると、新しい自由と方向性、そして人生の目的を受けることができるのです。
Often, we make mistakes that seem impossible to overcome, even when they’re not
outright sins. Nagging feelings about choosing the wrong career, marrying the wrong
spouse, and the like, can become unbearable. But when a person receives Christ into their
life, they also receive new freedom, direction and purpose.
うしろのものを忘れ、ひたむきに前のものに向かって進み、キリスト・イエスにおいて上に召してくださる神
の栄冠を得るために、目標を目指して一心に走っているのです。ピリピ 3:13-14
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal
to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians
3:13-14
生まれ育ち Upbringing
どの家庭に生まれようとも、全ての子供に等しく価値があることは言うまでもありません。しかし、この事実
を自分のものとして受け入れることに困難を覚える人がたくさんいます。キリスト教は私たちが平等であると
述べ、聖書はこの真実をはっきりと伝えています。
It shouldn’t need to be said that every child has equal value, regardless of the family it’s
born into. Yet we often struggle desperately to believe this simple truth. Christianity is the
great equalizer. The Bible shouts this truth openly and often.
私たちが神の子どもと呼ばれるために、・・事実、いま私たちは神の子どもです。・・御父はどんなにすば
らしい愛を与えてくださったことでしょう。 Ⅰヨハネ 3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of
God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

ず、どの国の人であっても、神を恐れかしこみ、正義を行う人なら、神に受け入れられるのです。使徒

Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show
favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. Acts
10:34-35
永遠のいのち Eternal life
おそらくキリスト教の最も素晴らしい点は、私たちの死後に対して平安と確信を与えてくれることでしょう。
私たちは死んだ後も永遠に生きますが、その事実を知らずに生きていくのは難しく、時に疲れてしまいま
す。しかしクリスチャンには、聖書や聖霊を通して、死後、神と共に永遠に生きることができるという強い確
信が与えられるのです。
Perhaps the greatest benefit of all is the rest and assurance we can receive about our lives
after death. Eternity is a long time! To live with uncertainty about this issue is difficult, and
sometimes exhausting. A Christian, on the other hand, receives deep assurance, from the
Bible and from the Holy Spirit, about living with God forever in the next life.
私たちはいつも心強いのです。そして、むしろ肉体を離れて、主のみもとにいるほうがよいと思っていま

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with
the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8

And this is what He promised us – even eternal life. 1 John 2:25

リスチャンもまた同じです。神に出会うことで私たちの人生は想像以上に変わるのです。それが本当に可

A married person might look at their life in two halves: before meeting Mr./Mrs. Right, and
after. For an adopted child, the two halves of before and after finding a family might
resonate even deeper. Can you imagine how a Christian feels? Before and after meeting
God takes this idea to a whole new level. If it were truly possible, would you want to have a
genuine relationship with God? How badly?

This lesson takes a good look at Jesus Christ himself. As a warm-up exercise, choose one

Have you ever been mistaken for someone else? Have you ever mistaken another person in
a funny way? Share what happened.

完全に人間 Totally Human
イエスは、歴史上実在した人物でした。ギリシャ神話に登場するヘラクレスや、日本のおとぎ話に出てく
る桃太郎と違って、実際に生きていたのです。イエスの存在は、聖書はもとより歴史的文献でも証明され
ています。
Jesus was human, and a very real figure in human history. Unlike the Greek Hercules or the
Japanese Momotaro, He lived as a normal person in full view of others, and much of His life
is documented historically in reliable sources, even outside of the Bible.
イエスはエルサレム近郊のベツレヘムという小さな町に生まれました。イエスの母のマリヤは処女だったの
で、彼の誕生は奇跡的な出来事でした。イエスを生んだ後、マリヤはヨセフという人と結婚し、少なくとも四
人の弟がいる家庭で育ちました。イエスは神のことを述べ伝える活動を30歳まで開始せず、それまで自分
の父親のように大工をしていたと思われます。イエスは私たちのように、食べたり、飲んだり、泣いたり、笑っ
たりという人生を送りました。そして33歳の時、十字架にかけられて死んだのです。
He was born in Bethlehem, a small town not far from Jerusalem. His birth was a miraculous
act of God, as His mother Mary was a virgin. After the birth, Mary married a man named
Joseph, and Jesus was raised in a home with at least four younger brothers as siblings.
Joseph was a carpenter, and because Jesus did not begin His public ministry until age 30, it
is assumed that Jesus was as well. He ate, drank, laughed, cried, and experienced life like
the rest of us. And He lived to age 33, when He died by being crucified on a cross.
イエスによって行われた数々の奇跡や、彼の神聖さ、そして圧倒的な影響力から、彼は人間ではないと
いう説が生まれました。イエスが天使だったという人もいれば、幽霊だったという人もいます。今でもこのよう
な考えを持つカルト教団があります。しかし、聖書ははっきりとこう述べています。
Because of His many miracles, His divinity, and His incredible influence, myths suggesting
that Jesus was not human have experienced popularity from time to time throughout history.
Some say He was an angel, others say He was a ghost, etc. These views are even held
today by certain cult groups. But the Bible is very clear:
初めに、ことばがあった。ことばは神とともにあった。ことばは神であった。この方は、初めに神とともにおら
れた。すべてのものは、この方によって造られた。造られたもので、この方によらずにできたものは一つもな

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing
was made that has been made… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among
us. John 1: 1-3, 14
神は唯一です。また、神と人との間の仲介者も唯一であって、それは人としてのキリスト・イエスです。Ⅰ

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1

完全に神 Totally God
イエスは人間でもあり、神でもありました。始まりも終わりもない、永遠の存在なのです。そのような概念
を理解するのは難しいかもしれませんが、聖書は一貫して、イエスの二つの性質を強調しています。イエス
は人間である以前に神であり、永遠に神であり続けるのです。これらのことを聖書の箇所から考えてみま
しょう。
At the same time, Jesus was and is God. His nature is divine. He is an eternal being, with
no beginning or end. While it can be difficult to grasp as a concept, the Bible is consistent
and emphatic about Jesus’ dual nature. He is man, but before that, He was God. And He
will always be God. Consider these statements from scripture:
ひとりのみどりごが、私たちのために生まれる。ひとりの男の子が、私たちに与えられる･･･その名は「不
思議な助言者、力ある神、永遠の父、平和の君」と呼ばれる。イザヤ 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, …and he will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for
him. Col. 1:16
聖書には、キリストが神であることについて数多くの言及があります。キリストをただの人間と考えるのは、
全くの誤解であり、大きな勘違いです！名前を間違えただけなら後に笑い話にもなりますが、その人が本
当は神で、しかも知り合いになれるとしたら、そんなチャンスは逃したくないですよね！
The Bible is loaded with references to Christ’s divinity. To think of Him as a mere man is a
tragic misunderstanding. Talk about a case of mistaken identity! Calling someone by the
wrong name can be a humorous mishap. But if we have a chance at connecting with God,
that’s not something we want to miss!
神であるイエスは人間の姿になって天から来られました。彼は、高い地位をかえりみず、この混乱した世
界で人間と喜んで生活しました。この事実を「自らゴキブリになってゴキブリを教育し、救い出した人間」に
例える人がいました。極端な例えですが、真実をとらえているのではないでしょうか。イエスは、私たちと関
係を築くために、信じられないくらい私たちに合わせてくれました。
God came down from heaven and took on the body of a man. He left His high position, and
gladly walked among us in our messed up world. Someone has compared it to a person
voluntarily becoming a cockroach to educate and save the cockroaches. An odd
comparison, for sure, but it captures an important truth. Jesus went to extreme measures
to connect with us.
神はふんぞり返っていて、何もしてくれないと思われています。しかし実際は、神は私たちに歩み寄るため
に、すでに大きな一歩を踏み出しているのです。イエスは、私たちの世界に来て、私たちと同じ姿かたちと
なり、私たちの先祖に直接教えたのです。イエスの言葉や偉業は、私たちのために記録されており、イエス
は地上に戻ってくると約束しています。実は、イエスは私たちの方がイエスに近づいていくことを待っているの
です。
Often, we think God is sitting back, and we are waiting for him to make contact with us. But
the opposite is true. He has already made a giant leap. Jesus crossed over into our world,
took on our form, and taught our forefathers face to face. His words and deeds are
preserved for us to feed on. And He has promised to return again. In actuality, He is waiting
on us.
三位一体 The Holy Trinity
聖書は、神が三つの顔を持つと記しています。それは父、御子、聖霊です。このことは三位一体として
知られています。
In the Bible, God is represented as one God that manifests three distinct personalities –
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This three-fold personality has become known as the holy
trinity.
これは大変理解しにくい難しい概念であり、細かく説明しませんが、二つほどお伝えしたいことがありま
す。まず、神は一人であるということです。聖書は、神は三つの側面を持ちながらも、一人であるという真
実を強調しています。神は一つに統一された、完全な存在です。神は三つに分かれた個別の神ではあり
ません。
Because it is somewhat of a mystery to understand, we won’t attempt to explain it
thoroughly here. Instead here are two helpful points. First of all, though we see three
distinct aspects of God, the Bible is emphatic about the fact that there is only one God. He
is one complete, unified and concrete individual. He is not three separate gods.
次に、人間との類似点です。全ての人は、肉体、魂、霊、感情、知性、良心を持っており、これらが組
み合わされて人間として形成されています。では、神が三つの顔を持ちながらも一人であるとは、どういうこ
とでしょうか？人間の理解を超えるかもしれませんが、それが神の性質なのかもしれません。三位一体につ

Second, this three-fold nature is not so entirely different from the human experience. Every
person is made up of body, soul, spirit, emotions, intelligence, conscience and the like. Yet
they come together to make one person. So how is it that God can be three in one?
Perhaps it is enough to say that He does it in the same way that we do. He just is! Volumes
of theology books have been written about the holy trinity. These explanations are meant
simply to introduce you to the ideas, and to provide a comfortable point of reference about
God’s nature, which will help you to enjoy the Bible’s rich teachings from the very start.

Two contrasting ideas were presented in this lesson. Jesus was a real human being and a
proven historical figure. But He is also God. Which of these ideas is harder for you to take

れ合いを楽しむのです。人となった神であるイエスは、同じような気持ちで人々に接したと思いますか？私

Sometimes a parent will slow down to play a cute game with their child. Adults aren’t so
interested in dolls or puzzles. But the interaction with their child makes everything enjoyable.
Do you think Jesus, the God-man, experienced this while interacting with people face to
face? Do you think God connects with us in this way whenever we pray?

By now, you can see that prayer is a simple and beautiful thing. Whether individually or with

愛の本 A Book of Love
聖書が歴史上のベストセラーであることは誰もが知っています。聖書は禁じられ、破棄されそうになり、す
べての国や地域から排除されそうになりました。しかし聖書は消えていません。非常に危険な状況でも、
人々は聖書を読み、聖書に従い、聖書の考えを広め続けています。それはなぜでしょうか？
Everyone knows that the Bible is the best-seller of all time. People have banned it, tried to
destroy it, and in every way sought to eliminate it from entire countries and regions. Yet it
endures. People continue to read it, follow it, and promote its ideas, even in the most
dangerous of circumstances. Why is that?
この章では、聖書がどのようにできたかを説明し、歴史や考古学などの観点から、聖書の信ぴょう性を
検証することにします。まず神の視点から、聖書がどのように書かれたのかを知る必要があります。聖書

In this lesson, we’ll explain how the Bible came to be, and look at historical and
archeological evidence for its validity. But the first thing to know about the Bible is how it
was written, at least from God’s perspective. It is not only a book of history or knowledge
or morality. It is a book of love. It is a love letter written from God to man. It is much like a
will, explaining the inheritance meant for each one of us. When we approach the Bible from
this perspective, we will always benefit the most. David, one of the great figures of the
Bible, expressed his love for God’s written word in this way:

With any important document, it makes sense to verify its authenticity. Are we sure that the
Bible is not a forgery? Could it have been tampered with in any way? The first test of
authenticity for any ancient work of literature has to do with surviving manuscripts, both in
terms of their age, and the sheer number of them. In ancient times, writings were spread
and preserved the old-fashioned way – by tediously copying them word for word, by hand.
A surviving copy is known as a “papyrus”.

None of the significant documents from antiquity have the author’s original manuscript.
But as a point of reference, consider Homer, the ancient Greek author, and his famous
story, The Iliad, written somewhere around 800 B.C. Aside from the Bible, no other
ancient work has more surviving papyri than The Iliad, which has about 643 hand-written
copies surviving in museums and universities around the world. Though we may hesitate
to believe the fantastic story of Achilles, Hector, Zeus and the others, the historical
evidence is fairly clear. The Iliad is an actual piece of literature, which was popular
amongst real people in the ancient world.

The New Testament section of the Bible, on the other hand, has not 643, but over 20,000
surviving papyrus! And though the stories in the Bible may at times be harder to believe
than Homer’s, you can rest assured that the text is reliable. It was not invented or twisted
along the way.

As for the other part of the Bible, which we call the Old Testament, the physical evidence
for its integrity is even stronger. Though it’s older, and less ancient manuscripts are
available, the archeological discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 has quieted all
honest skeptics. Well-preserved scrolls, buried in clay jars since approximately 100 B.C.,
were discovered in 11 caves along the west bank of the Jordan River. They contain large
portions of the Bible, and if you compare its text to any modern Hebrew Bible, the matchup is extraordinary. Almost line by line, the words and stories of scripture have been
wonderfully preserved for over 2,000 years.

Now, let’s take a look at the Bible itself, and get a handle on some of its basic features. As
already mentioned, it’s divided into two parts. The Old Testament is the first part, covering
the period of history from creation to the times of Jesus, and primarily tells us about how
God interacted with the nation of Israel through its prophets and leaders. The New
Testament covers the life of Jesus, and continues into the period of the early Christian
church. It gives us snapshots of the lives and activities of Jesus’ followers for many
decades after His death, resurrection and ascension.

The Bible contains a wide variety of sections. Some are more historical. Some cover
legal or ceremonial protocol. There is a long section full of songs and poems, called
Psalms. There are personal letters, a romantic poem, majestic prophecies, and even a
section full of short, clever statements, which we call Proverbs. For most people, the
best place to start reading is in one of the books known as the “gospels,” which are the
first four books of the New Testament. Here, you can read all about Jesus himself, both
His teachings and His deeds during His 3½ years of preaching and ministry.

The Bible has approximately 40 authors, from a wide variety of backgrounds: king,

and free. Its message is eternal, and its reach is universal, able to speak to and inspire
any heart.

Some books rely heavily on endorsements from respected leaders or authors to generate
credibility and sales. The Bible, on the other hand, has thousands of endorsements that
speak louder than words.

After Jesus’ death and resurrection, 12 of His disciples continued His work of preaching and
teaching, helping the poor and planting churches around the world, amidst the utmost of
persecution. Each of these men chose to face death rather than deny their faith, and all but
one were eventually killed in the process. Since then, literally billions of Christian believers
have suffered around the world for the right to read the Bible and connect with its God.
Their endorsement echoes through eternity.

In this lesson, we’ll look at the roots and expressions of Christianity as a religion. As a

救い主に気づかなかった人たち Hidden in Plain Sight
イエス・キリストが生きていた時代の宗教的指導者は盲目的でした。中でも、パリサイ人は、ユダヤ人の
宗教であるユダヤ教を強く信奉していました。極度な勤勉さをもって、彼らはユダヤ教の聖書である「トー

One of the surprises in the Bible is the blindness of the religious leaders during Jesus’ days.
The most memorable of them were called “Pharisees,” and were strict adherents to the
Jewish religion, which we call Judaism. With extreme diligence, they adhered to the Jewish
Bible, or Torah, which is the very same part of the Christian Bible that is known as the Old
Testament. In fact, it would be accurate to say that Christianity developed out of Judaism.
パリサイ人は「トーラー」に記載されている細かい規則に従うだけでなく、時代を追うごとに、さらに何千も
の規則や慣習を作り出し、厳格な生活を送るようになりました。
But in regards to the Pharisees, not only did they follow the detailed codes of conduct
recorded in the Torah, but they even invented thousands of extra rules and traditions along
the way, making their lifestyles quite strict.
そして驚くことに、これらの宗教的な人々がイエス・キリストの活動に対する主な反対勢力となったので
す。ねたみや不安ゆえに、彼らはイエス・キリストを批判し、拒絶することによって自分たちの地位や重要

It is startling, then, to read that these religious men became the main opponents to Jesus’
ministry. Motivated by jealousy and insecurity, they sought to protect their status and
importance by criticizing and resisting Him. At the end, they were the very group that
arranged for His crucifixion on the cross. The very Savior that their holy book spoke of
came to them in plain sight, and they did not recognize Him.
難しい歴史 A Difficult History
クリスチャンはユダヤ教徒に「あなた方は救い主であるイエス・キリストを見逃したのだ！」と言い、ユダヤ教
徒はキリスト教徒に「あなた方は偽者にだまされている！」と言うのです。キリスト教とユダヤ教の根本的な
違いは、この会話に表れています。
This is the fundamental basis of the difference between Christianity and Judaism.
Christianity says, “You missed him!” Judaism says, “You’ve been duped by an imposter!
Wait for the real one!” It can be quite an uncomfortable conversation.
悲しいことに、人間はすぐ高慢になってしまいます。イエスを非難したパリサイ人と同じ醜い態度が、キリス
ト教会においても見られるようになりました。
Perhaps even more tragic, however, is the human problem of pride that creeps into us so
easily. The same ugly attitude that moved the Pharisees to condemn Jesus, at various
points of Christian history, has shown up in the Christian church as well.
特にヨーロッパでは、キリスト教会は部外者を極端に迫害するようになりました。イエスのようにへりくだって
愛を示す代わりに、クリスチャンは、パリサイ人のように振舞い始めたのです。彼らは独善的なエリート意識

Especially in Europe, but in other countries as well, the Christian Church has slipped into
periods of extreme persecution of outsiders. Instead of carrying ourselves in the humble,
loving way that Jesus did, Christians have acted more like Pharisees at times. That selfrighteous, elitist attitude caused all kinds of ugly behavior, from mockery and political
oppression, to downright brutality and torture. The Jewish people have been one of the
groups to witness and experience this, though they are not the only ones. They have surely
experienced their share of hatred and discrimination.
中世の教会は、中東の聖地を勝ち取るために悪名高い十字軍を結成しました。キリストの名のもとに、
ヨーロッパから軍隊が派遣され、イスラム教徒と戦いました。初代のイスラム教徒たちは暴力的で、何千も
の人々にイスラム教への改宗を強制し、改宗しない人たちを殺害しました。しかしながら、彼らに対する十
字軍の反応は時に行き過ぎであり、多くの兵士が聖地を奪還するという気高い目的ではなく、富や栄誉
のために戦ったのです。
In a similar way, the church of the middle ages was involved in the notorious Crusades,
which were wars over the Holy Land in the Middle East. In the name of Christianity, armies
were sent from Europe to fight against Muslims. To be fair, people should know that the
early Muslims were extremely violent, forcing thousands to convert to their religion or be put
to death. Still, the reaction from the Europeans was at times overboard. And many of the
soldiers fought not for noble purposes, but for riches and glory.
このような出来事は、ユダヤ教徒やイスラム教徒のみならず、世界中の民族の間で、キリスト教の歴史
の汚点となっています。悲しい事に、今日世界はこのような歴史の影響を未だに受けているのです。ひどい
ことをした人たちは本物のクリスチャンではなかったと思いますし、イエス・キリストは決して彼らのしたことを

The memory of these and other infractions continues to tarnish the reputation of Christianity
amongst many countries and ethnicities around the world, including many of Jewish and
Muslim descent. Christ never condoned such activities, and one could justifiably argue that
such “Christians” were not really Christians at all. But our world today continues to be
affected by this difficult history.
宗教改革 Trying to Start Over
キリスト教会の態度の問題がもっとも明白になったのは、16世紀から17世紀にかけての宗教改革の頃
でした。その頃、世界の大多数のクリスチャンはローマ・カトリック教会に属し、地球上で唯一真実のキリス

This problem attitude in the church manifested itself most memorably in the events
surrounding the Protestant Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries. Up until that point in
time, the vast majority of Christians in the world were part of the Roman Catholic Church,
which basically considered itself to be the only true expression of Christianity on the earth.
The Catholic Church had strayed so far from its roots that it practiced strange rituals that
even contradicted the basic message of Christianity. One of the most controversial was the
lucrative sale of “indulgences,” which were special certificates that supposedly guaranteed
a person’s forgiveness by God.
免罪符や他の聖書的でない慣習に、新しい指導者たちが反対し始めました。1500年代の初め、ドイツ
で、マルチン・ルターにより宗教改革が起こりました。この動きは、カトリック教会を改革する試みとして始ま

Because of this and other unbiblical practices, a new wave of religious leaders began to
protest. Thus, starting with Martin Luther in Germany in the early 1500’s, the Protestant
Reformation was born. The movement started as an attempt to reform the Catholic Church,
but as time went on, it became apparent that the pope and other Catholic leaders were not
willing to change, at least not at a reasonable pace. So many new churches were started,
separate from the Catholic Church.
新しい教会が次々と誕生し、キリスト教はカトリックとプロテスタントという二つの宗派に分かれ始めまし
た。それから何世紀にもわたって、二派は対立と和解を繰り返すようになりました。対立が最も激化した
時代には、カトリック信者がプロテスタント信者を拷問したり処刑しました。しかし、プロテスタント信者に非

Many of these new movements flourished, and the body of Christendom basically began to
separate into its two main sections: Catholic and Protestant. Over the centuries, the
hostility between these two groups had intensified and lessened from time to time. In its
ugliest stretches, the Catholic Church tortured and killed Protestant believers. Protestant
believers, likewise, do not have a spotless history.
自分と何の関係があるの? How does this help me?!
これまでの説明を聞いて混乱しているかもしれません。キリスト教の名のもとに多くのことが行なわれまし
たが、それらの出来事がいつもキリストの姿を正しく反映しているわけではありません。しかしながら、歴史
的事実を検証することによって、自分たちが現在に至るまでの経緯を理解できることがあります。完璧から

Certainly, it may add a little bit of confusion into the conversation! So many things have been
done “in the name of Christianity” that misrepresent Christ himself. But a simple snapshot of
the historical landscape often helps a person to understand how we got to where we are
today. Thankfully, both the Roman Catholic and Protestant movements have “grown up”
over the years, and though they’re far from perfect, they’ve become a much better
expression of the Bible’s message.
現在、腐敗した支配的なキリスト教宗派はなく、何千もの宗派が存在しています。それぞれが、さまざま

Now, instead of one dominant and corrupt Christian institution, we have thousands of
groups. They express a wide variety of styles and approaches to the message of Christ.
Even within the Catholic Church, there is variety. And though some groups at times may
stray into controversial areas – and can even fall into a cult-type of existence – an
enormous body of true Christian believers continues to grow around the world.
多様性は、神の素晴らしい思いを表現しています。自然界や文化に神が素晴らしい多様性を与えられ

The extensive variety is also a beautiful expression of God’s heart. Just as He put extensive
variety into the natural world, and as He gave us beautiful diversity in our human cultures,
the freedom and uniqueness of different Christian traditions is easy to appreciate. It makes
the message of God’s love available to people from any background. The Bible compares
the diversity in the church to the many parts of a human body:

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many,
they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one
body – whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to

ス・キリストと親しい関係にある友人はいますか？彼らは不完全でしょうか？彼らの人生はどのように見え
ますか？彼らはあなたが望む何かを持っているでしょうか？神からの助け、愛と赦しは現実であり、あなたも
受け取ることができるのです。
Perhaps an important take-away from all of this is that Christianity continues to endure and
flourish. Through many ups and downs, the message still touches hearts and changes lives.
The reality of a changed life is perhaps the greatest proof that the God of the Bible is still
active today. Do you know a friend or two who has experienced a relationship with Jesus?
Are they imperfect? Is their life going in a positive direction? Do they seem to have
something that you want? This message of God’s help, love, and forgiveness has indeed
survived, and is now available to you as well.
キリストも一度罪のために死なれました。正しい方が悪い人々の身代わりとなったのです。それは、肉に

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to

Regardless of the mistakes of previous generations, if we hear the message of God’s love
from a credible source today, it should generate interest and excitement. As you learn
more, is your interest growing? Are your concerns and questions slowly being answered?
祈り Prayer
キリスト教の歴史は複雑かもしれません。もし神が本当に存在するなら、ご自身を明らかにしてくれるで
しょう。自分の正直な気持ちを神に直接伝えましょう。
History may be complicated, but if God is real, He can easily make it clear for us. The most
important part of a person’s spiritual journey is honest expressions of the heart directly to
God himself.

神様、少しずつですがあなたに近づいています。難しい歴史的事実もあり、疑問もありますが、本当のこ
とを知りたいです。あなたに出会いたいです！そして納得したいです。キリスト教は今まで誤解されてきたと

Dear God, I am marching forward in my journey. I am looking at some of the difficult
realities on the religious landscape. But I do this, not to justify my fears or doubts, but to
find the truth. I want to know You God! And I want it to make sense. Give me wisdom to
understand where You are at work, and where You have been misrepresented. Even more,
give me spiritual revelation to see Your plan for my life, and to hear Your voice in my heart.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Chapter 7: Why did God make people?
はじめに Warm Up
この最終章では「なぜ自分は存在しているのか？」という人間なら誰しも抱く疑問について考えてみたい
と思います。はじめに、以下から質問を選び、それについて自分の思ったことを自由に話してみてください。
In this final lesson, we ponder the question for all times: Why are we here? As a warm-up
exercise, choose one or both of the following questions to discuss, and spend some time in
friendly conversation, giving each person a chance to share.
1.　小学校時代に図工の時間に作った作品や、大人になってから本格的に作った物など、今までに作っ
た中で記憶に残っているものはありますか？なぜその作品を作りましたか？なぜその作品が印象に残って
いるのでしょうか？
Can you recall something memorable that you’ve made? Maybe a craft project in
elementary school, or a more ambitious effort as an adult? Why did you make it? Why does
it stand out in your memory?
2.　子育ては多くの時間を要し、体力的にも経済的にも負担が大きい大変な仕事です。それらの大きな
代価を払ってもなお、なぜ人は子供をもちたいと願うのでしょうか？
Children are a lot of hard work. They take a lot of time, energy, and finance to raise.
Considering the extreme “cost” involved, what motivates people to have children anyway?

神のため For Himself
赤ん坊は、世界が自分を中心に回っていると考えがちです。子供たちに、世界が自分を中心に回って
いるわけではないということを理解させることはとても大変です。しかし、私たちは大人になっても自分中心
に物事を見る傾向があります。現実には、全てイエスを中心に回っているのです。
It’s an amazing thing how a baby tends to think that the world revolves around them. As
kids grow up, it takes a lot of effort to convince them that they are not the center of the
universe! Yet even in adulthood, that way of thinking persists. We tend to see the world with
ourselves at the center. In reality, everything revolves around Jesus:
万物は、天にあるものも地にあるものも、見えるものも見えないものも、位も主権も、支配も権威も、み
な御子にあって造られたからである。これらいっさいのものは、御子によって造られ、御子のために造られ
たのである。コロサイ 1:16
For by him [Jesus] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by
him and for him. Colossians 1:16
楽しむため To Enjoy
神は私たちのことを喜んでいます。この否定的な世の中では、単純ですが力強いこの事実を忘れてしま
うことがあります。神にとって私たちは、害虫でも問題児でもありません。価値ある存在なので、忍耐強く
接してくれるのです。一緒にいるということが何よりの喜びなので、私たちを創造しただけでなく、私たちのた
めに死んでくれたのです。神は、死ぬことによって、私たちと近くなれるということを知っていたのです。
In a world that weighs us down with negativity, it can be easy to overlook this simple, but
powerful idea. God gets excited about us. We are not pests or problems to Him, at least
not in the ultimate sense. He is patient with us, because we are valuable to Him. He not only
created us, but even died for us, because the idea of being with us brings Him great joy. He
knew that His sacrifice would make a way to intimate relationship with us:
信仰の創始者であり、完成者であるイエスから目を離さないでください。イエスは、ご自分の前に置かれ
た喜びのゆえに、はずかしめをものともせずに十字架を忍び、神の御座の右に着座されました。ヘブル
12:2
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set
before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the
throne of God. Hebrews 12:2
あなたの神は、主は、あなたのただ中におられる。救いの勇士だ。主は喜びを持って、あなたの事を楽し

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17
近づくため To Be Close With
神が私たちに求める関係は、厳格で儀式的で義務感から来るものではありません。心と心を通わせるよ
うな親密な関係を望んでいるのです。神は、私たちと語り合い、私たちの感情を知り、自分の思いを私た
ちに分かち合いたいと願っています。神は、私たちと生き生きした関係を持ちたいと思っているのです。
The relationship God seeks with us is not a rigid one based on ritual and formal obligations.
He wants to connect with us relationally — heart to heart. He wants to talk with us, hear our
deepest emotions, and share His thoughts with us in return. He desires a vibrant, active
relationship with you and me.
神は真実であり、その方のお召しによって、あなたがたは神の御子、私たちの主イエス・キリストとの交わ
りに入れられました。Ⅰコリント 1:9
God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. 1
Corinthians 1:9
神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神はあなたがたに近づいてくださいます。ヤコブ 4:8
Come near to God and he will come near to you. James 4:8
愛するため To Love
現代において私たちは愛本来の意味をしばしばはき違えてしまいます。愛は、化学反応やぬくもり、キュ
ンとする気持ちなどではありません。確かにそれらは素晴らしく大切なものではありますが、本当の愛ではあ
りません。愛は他の誰かのことを自分のことよりも気にかけることです。真実の愛とは、自身の身を削って他
の人に益をもたらすことで、代価や犠牲を払うことであり、痛みを伴うものです。
In our day and age, what people call love often misses the mark. Love is not about
chemistry or warm, fuzzy feelings, though these are wonderful and important. Love focuses
its attention away from self and towards another. True love gives, at one’s own expense, to
benefit someone else. It’s a sacrifice. It’s costly. It’s painful.
そして、信じられないかもしれませんが、それはとても楽しいことです！私たちの理屈を超えますが、それ
が真実です。たとえ私たちが神を傷つけ、失望させ、なかなか神の愛に応えないとしても、神は喜んで私た
ちを愛しています。神は私たちを愛するがゆえに私たちを造られ、どんな代価を払ってでも私たちと関係を
持ちたいのです。
And it’s so fun! It’s what we call an “oxymoron.” It cuts completely across normal logic, but
it’s entirely true. God enjoys loving us — even when it hurts; even when we disappoint Him;
even when He has to wait for our response. He made us to love us, and is willing to pay the
necessary price to have this love relationship.

…remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
私たちが神の子どもと呼ばれるために、―事実、いま私たちは神の子どもです。―御父はどんなにすば
らしい愛を与えてくださったことでしょう。 Ⅰヨハネ 3:1
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of
God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1
愛されるため To Be Loved
神は私たちからの応答を待っています。一方通行の関係は決して楽しいものではありません。むしろ惨め
なものです。それでも神は、完璧な紳士のように、忍耐強く私たちからの応答を待っているのです。神は私
たちに強要はしません。私たちが自ら神を求め、選び、必要とし、愛することを望んでいるのです。
God waits for our response. A one-way relationship is never fun. In fact, it can be a pretty
miserable experience. Yet God waits patiently, like a perfect gentleman, anticipating our
response. He will not force Himself on us. He wants us to seek Him. To choose Him. To
want Him. To love Him.
信仰がなくては、神に喜ばれることはできません。神に近づく者は、神がおられることと、神を求める者に
は報いてくださる方であることとを、信じなければならないのです。　ヘブル 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must
believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6
見よ、わたしは戸口に立って、たたいている。だれかわたしの声を聞いて戸を開ける者があれば、わたし
は中に入ってその者と共に食事をし、彼もまた、わたしと共に食事をするであろう。黙示録 3:20
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I
will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelations 3:20

1. 情熱的に愛してくれる神よりもあいまいで神秘的な神を信じる方が簡単かもしれません。神があなた

To believe in a vague, mysterious version of God is often much easier than believing in a
God that loves us passionately. Do you find it difficult to believe that God loves you like
this? Why or why not?
2. 神の愛に応えることは怖いことかもしれません。私たちは、心の一部だけで神を愛することもできます
し、心の全てを神に捧げることもできます。神に心を捧げる準備はできましたか？どうしたら準備ができると
思いますか？どうすれば心の扉を開けようという気持ちになりますか？
Returning love to God is perhaps the scary part. We can love Him with a small part of our
hearts, or give Him everything we have. Are you ready to give your heart to God? What
would it take for you to become ready? What would make you willing to “open the door”?
祈り Prayer
このテキストで多くのことを学びました。もしかしたら、イエスと関係を築いて、より深いレベルでイエスを知る
喜びを体験したいと思っているかもしれません。もしそうであれば、簡単な祈りによってイエスとの関係を始
めることができます。自分一人で、もしくは友達と一緒に次のように心から祈ることで、すぐに神と関係を築
くことができます。
We’ve covered a lot in this short booklet. Perhaps you’re ready to enter into a relationship
with Jesus, and experience the joy of knowing Him at a more meaningful level. If so, this
kind of relationship starts with a simple prayer. Either on your own, or with the help of a
friend, you can begin your relationship with God right now by repeating this prayer from
your heart.
私の主、救い主となってください Be my Lord and Savior...
天のお父さま、私に対して親切で忍耐強くいてくれてありがとうございます。あなたは素晴らしい方です。
そして、あなたとあなたの愛に感謝します。私の無関心さと罪、高慢さやためらいによって、あなたとの間に
隔たりをつくったことを認めます。どうか、赦してください。私の態度と、これまでに犯した全ての罪、そして今
まであなたを悲しませてきたことをどうぞ赦してください。
Heavenly Father… You have been kind and patient with me... I acknowledge Your
goodness… and thank You for Your love... I also acknowledge that the separation between
us… is because of my disinterest and sin… because of my pride and reluctance… Forgive
me… Forgive me of these attitudes… and for all of my sin… everything I’ve ever done to
offend you or let you down.
私が犯した全ての罪の代価を払うために、ひとり子のイエスをこの世に送ってくださりありがとうございます。
イエスが十字架で死んでくださり、死からよみがえられ、私を赦してくださったことを信じます。
Thank you for sending Your Son… for His sacrifice on the cross… for paying the penalty in
full… for all of my sin… I believe that Jesus died for me… was raised from the dead… and
that You forgive me… as I turn to You in faith.
今日この日から、私は聖書で罪とされている全てのことに背を向けます。そして、あなたを私の人生の
主、救い主として心に迎え入れます。私の人生をあなたにゆだねます。イエスの名前により祈ります。アー

From this day forward… I turn away from everything that the Bible calls sin… and receive
you… as my Lord, Master and Savior… for the rest of my life… in Jesus’ name… Amen!
