D iverse and large participation for continuous wide-area activities
Initiatives for biodiversity should ideally be on-going efforts by a large number of people, involving
a wide range of entities and covering all corners of the country.
That is why this competition screens various biodiversity-related activities by companies, businesses
as well as miscellaneous other collaborating organizations and NPOs. These activities’ outcome
was assessed comprehensively to highlight and recognize excellence in factors such as modelability,
foresight and scientific rationale.
Now in its fourth iteration, this competition is finally gaining recognition for its presence, paving
the way for strengthening corporate understanding and interest in biodiversity and their voluntary
participation. I hope the examples of activities and award-winning cases in this competition will
further accelerate the trend toward mainstream biodiversity awareness.
This time, 41 of 78 entries passed the primary screening. The judging committee underwent
thorough discussions before selecting 9 entries for awards including the Minister’s Prize.
The Minister’s Prize, Ministry of the Environment, went to the “Creature prosperity activity
through development of Kao Kashima Plant ‘employees’ forest’”. All Kao employees working at the
Kashima Plant have each planted their favorite tree over the last 35 years since the Plant’s launch
in 1980, creating the ‘Employee’s Forest’ consisting of 143 types of trees planted by a total of 800
employees. Each of the trees carry a tag identifying when it was planted, who it was planted by and
what the type of tree it is, serving as a visualization tool for employees’ working history and career
development.
The Minister’s Prize, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, went to the “Environmental
conservation rice Survey of living creatures in rice fields” by JA Miyagi Tome. For the last twelve
years, the organization has worked on producing ‘conservation-oriented rice’, grown with only half
the regular amount of agricultural chemicals and chemical fertilizers. Subsequent biodiversity study
confirmed the return of tadpole shrimps (Triops) and Minami Medaka rice fish (Oryzias latipes)
to the rice fields. Such biodiversity-themed rice initiatives are in place across the nation, but this
was an advanced example by ‘JA’. I hope this recognition will help spread the practice to JA entities
nationwide.
The Director-General’s Prize, National Land Afforestation Promotion Organization, went to the
“Tree planting festival of Co-op and forest development workshop” by the Consumers Co-operative
Sapporo “Co-op Future Forest Development Fund” . To secure the initiative’s continuity, the
Organization set up the Fund (2008), signed an agreement with the Hokkaido government, and
planted / fostered trees at fourteen Co-op Forest sites within Hokkaido. A total of about 6,000
citizens participated, planting 30,000 trees. The award was given in recognition of its consumer
participation and spread of project base.
The Aroma Environment Association of Japan Prize went to the “Nature restoration project

of Global Environmental Contribution Plan ‘Hitachi IT Eco Experimental Village’ ~Keeping
suburban Satoyama~”by Hitachi Limited Information & Telecommunication Systems Company. The
project opened an IT Eco Experimental Village in Hadano City as the site for IT-based ecosystem
conservation, restoring disused paddy fields in areas including Akiruno and Hachioji cities,
preserving Satochi and Satoyama areas (e.g. thinning of bamboo forests) and assisting children’s
environmental education. It also contributed to building an environment-aware mentality among a
total of some 10,000 participating employees.
The President’s Prize, the Earth, Water & Green Foundation, went to the “Environmental
Education Program ‘Hachi-iku’ in Urban Park by SEIBU Landscape Co., LTD At city parks in
Yokohama, Odawara and Yokosuka, the company’s employees farmed bees and partnered with the
local governments to organize environmental education events, showing that biodiversity activities
can be carried out at urban parks.
The Chairman’s Prize, the Judging Committee, went to the “Ikimonomikke-farm, a national-scale
project covering eleven prefectures by TOYO RICE CORPORATION. With the aim of establishing
a sustainable society, revitalizing local communities and promoting environmental education for
families, the project offered hands-on activities for learning about ‘correlation and synthesis of foods,
agriculture and economy’ by building a network involving producers / processors / distributors,
consumers, NPOs, educators and bureaucrats.
The Special Prize, the Judging Committee, went to three unique projects. The “AWASE-HAMAYA
Satoumi council of Fisheries‘aquatic resources management activity’” project by the AWASEHAMAYA Satoumi council of Fisheries, is a resource recovery research for Sujiara red-spotted
rockcod and other species whose population has been notably declining at the coral reef area at
Nakashiro Bay, Okinawa, setting up off-limit conservation zones and carrying out monitoring in
collaboration with the local prefecture’s fisheries center and fisheries cooperative. The project won
the award in recognition of its scientific approach.
The “Environmentally-friendly Kyoto Station building promotion project” by the Kyoto Station
Building Development Co., Ltd. has been going on only for a short period of time but is expected
to generate a rippling effect due to its high-profile exposure to the eyes of consumers. The “Cherry
blossoms preservation activity of Mt. Yoshino” by DAIWA HOUSE INDUSTRY CO., LTD. and the
Yoshinoyama Hoshokai (Mt. Yoshino Sakura Aid) set up a cherry tree nursery for growing healthy
cherry trees from seeds collected from established Shiro Yamazakura trees, which form a crucial part
of Yoshino’s cherry blossom landscape but are losing their vigor in recent years despite having been
carefully preserved for generations. After six years of volunteer activities by the company’s employees
and their families, one tree has become advanced enough to be planted on the mountain. The project
won the award in recognition of its historical and cultural perspectives.

“社員の森”は、工場建設の年にあたる 1980 年から工場に在籍した全て
メジロやモズ、キジ等の鳥たちやアオスジアゲハ、ゴマダラ蝶など多く
の人が工場で仕事をした証として、新入社員や転入者が入ると地域に生
の生き物が集まる森となったことである。
この工夫は、現在の生物多様性の考え方であり、35 年前より生物多様
息する樹木や県花、県木等から好きな木を選び植樹しており、現在では、
143 種類が確認されている。
本活動の成果は、35 年に渡る緑地保全を継続していることで、鹿島港
の航路建設に伴う、掘り込み・浚渫によりできた海浜砂丘の地に、実の
性の活動が行われており、今では、この森を用いた見学コースや視察会、
健康づくりの場などに利用することで、生態系サービスの恩恵に与って
いる。なる木や蝶の食草であるクスノキやエノキなどの植樹、高木とその脇に
社員の森が地域生態系の一角を担っているとの認識のもと、引き続き

大阪市立北田辺小学校は、学校運営の目標の一つとして、従前から学校
環境の緑化と美化を掲げ、学校環境の改善に取り組んでいる。
今回の事業は、日常的に自然と触れ合える空間をつくり、理科・生活科・
総合的な学習の教材として有効活用することや校庭の環境整備を一層推進
することを目的に実施したものである。児童・教職員・保護者・地域住民
が協力して、ドングリなど実のなる樹木を植樹するとともに、ビオトープ
づくりを行った。このビオトープは、児童の投票により「なでしこの森」
と名付けられた。
今回のビオトープづくりは、1 年生から 6 年生まで役割を決めて活動を
行った。高学年は低学年をサポートし、低学年も自分の役割をきちんと行
うことで、
「なでしこの森」を完成した。
学校・保護者・地域住民などが一体となり、この事業に取り組んだこと
で地域交流の輪を広げることができたモデル的な活動である。

This project was carried out with the purpose to create space where students
can come in contact with nature on a daily basis, be effectively used as
educational materials for science, life environment studies and comprehensive
learning, and further promote environmental development of the schoolyard.

fruits such as acorn and created a biotope. This biotope was named “Nadeshiko
forest” in a poll by students.

絶滅危惧Ⅰ A 類のニッポンバラタナゴ（コイ科魚類・キンタイ）を
保護するために、地域の多様な主体と共に伝統的なため池の水質浄化
管理法である“ドビ流し”（池干し）を行い、ニッポンバラタナゴの産
卵母貝であるドブガイを繁殖させ、ニッポンバラタナゴを含む生物多
様性を保全する活動である。また、その生物多様性から生まれた地域
の衣・食文化および伝統な農業技術である“ドビ流し”を 100 年後の
子どもたちに継承する。さらに、高安山の森林整備を実施し、高安山
の水循環を健全化することで、ニッポンバラタナゴが生息する保護池
の水量と水質を安定化させ、その保護池の水を利用して稲作と和綿の
有機栽培を推進している。これらの地場産業である稲作と花卉栽培を
活性化し、米のブランド化 ( キンタイ米 ) と地元の伝統工芸である河内
木綿を再生・保存することで、持続可能な地域づくりを目指している。
It is an activity to protect biodiversity including -apanese rose bitterling
Kintai by conducting “draining” pond drying, which is a traditional method
of water puri¿cation and management of ponds, with various organizations in
the local community and breeding -apanese pond mussel which -apanese rose
bitterling lay eggs to, in order to protect the critically endangered -apanese
rose bitterling family Cyprinidae. It is also aimed to pass clothing and food
culture of the region brought about from biodiversity and “draining” which
is a traditional agricultural technology, on to children years from now.
Furthermore, organic cultivation of rice and -apanese cotton is promoted
using the water of the protection pond where -apanese rose bitterling live
and amount and quality of water are stabilized by maintaining forests and
restoring water circulation of Mt. Takayasu. We aim for a sustainable regional
development by vitalizing rice cultivation and Àower growing, which are local
industries, as well as developing a rice brand Kintai rice and regenerating
and preserving Kawachi cotton which is a traditional craft.
