Hello, and welcome to the first all-digital edition
of the International Certification Newsletter. In our
ongoing effort to better serve you, we have moved
the International Certification Newsletter, formerly
the International Certification Report, into a fully
electronic format. All future editions of the report
will be emailed to you on a quarterly basis. And,
as with the previous versions of the International
Certification Report, each edition will be archived
and accessible via www.ascp.org.
In this issue, we have a number of exciting things
to share with you, including: updates from the BOC
Board of Governors Meeting at ASCP 2015 Long
Beach, BOC outreach activities in Ecuador and
Colombia, an exchange program with the
Japanese Association of Medical Technologists
(JAMT), and so much more!
Cytogenetics – The definition of a cytogenetics
laboratory was further defined in the eligibility
requirements for both the U.S. Technologist in
Cytogenetics, CG(ASCP) and the International
Technologist in Cytogenetics, CG(ASCPi).
International – Eligibility requirements for the
following international certification categories were
also revised:
• Cytotechnologist, Specialist in Cytotechnology
• Histotechnician, Histotechnologist
• Technologist in Molecular Biology
• Technologist in Microbiology, Specialist
in Microbiology
• Technologist in Blood Banking, Specialist

December 31, 2015, we have 8,643 applicants
from 91 countries of education.

work of the ASCP BOC International team. Please

JAMT Exchange Program:
International Internship
Expands Learning Opportunities
in the United States
As part of its commitment to contribute globally to the
highest standards of patient safety, the ASCP Board
of Certification (BOC) recently collaborated with the
Japanese Association of Medical Technologists (JAMT)
to arrange for a Japanese laboratory professional to
have an internship in the United States.

The ASCP BOC supported this year’s SOTEMELAB
laboratory conference (III Latin American Course for
Updates and Continuing Education in Laboratory and
Translational Medicine) —owned and managed by
the Chair of the Ecuador Advisory Board, Dr. Henry
Alvarez— with a booth in the main conference
hall and a lecture on ASCPi by Patricia A. Tanabe,
MPA, MLS(ASCP)CM, Executive Director, ASCP BOC.
Approximately 450 laboratory professionals attended
the conference. Meetings were held with four
Ecuadorian university medical laboratory science
program directors: Carola Cardenas (Universidad de
Cuenca), Dolores Salazar (Universidad Técnica de
Ambato), Lucia Ulloa (Pontificia Universidad Católica
del Ecuador), Bernarda Ulloa (Universidad Central
del Ecuador), and two government representatives:
Gregorio Montalvo, Advisor to the Higher Education
Council, and Fausto Oviedo, Advisor to the Evaluation,
Accreditation and Quality Assurance Council for
Higher Education. Currently, at the regulatory level,
university programs are being evaluated, and work
licensure exams are being created and implemented.
Participation and use of ASCPi examinations in these
processes was thoroughly discussed.
In September 2015, Patricia Tanabe, MPA, MLS(ASCP)CM,
and Cristina G. del Riego, Latin America and Caribbean
Program Coordinator, ASCP BOC, held strategic
meetings in Colombia to promote ASCPi certification.
Six key meetings were held in Bogota:
• Proasecal (General Manager and Technical Director,
Clara Morales) - a private company which manages
and provides external quality control programs for
laboratories and offers education services in all
areas of the laboratory.
• ACG Calidad (ACG’s Scientific Director is Alba
Cecilia Garzón, Chair of the Columbia Advisory
Board) – ACG provides consulting, training, and
auditing on quality management systems for
laboratories.
• National Association of Bacteriology (Chair Estela
Paéz and three other members of the Board).
• Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (MLS/Bacteriology
Program Director and Member of the Advisory
Board, Diana Patiño).
• Universidad Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca (Dean
of Health Sciences, Ana Isabel Mora and Director of
Bacteriology, Johana Moscoso).
• Columbia Advisory Board.
For Individuals Immigrating or Seeking Permanent Residence
In the United States and Canada, the CT(ASCPi),
SCT(ASCPi), and CTgyn(ASCPi) Examinations do
not circumvent state or federal work regulations or
national certification requirements.
As stipulated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement
Amendments Act of 1988 (CLIA ’88), individuals
interested in working in Cytotechnology in the U.S.
must have completed a Cytotechnology program
approved by the Commission on Accreditation
of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Cytotechnology programs originally accredited by
CAHEA are now being fulfilled by CAAHEP.

Cytotechnologists educated outside of the U.S.,
even those with a CT(ASCPi), SCT(ASCPi), or
CTgyn(ASCPi) credential, must still meet the
CAAHEP requirement to work in the U.S. A list of
accredited Cytotechnology programs is available
on the CAAHEP website. Additionally, a CT(ASCPi),
SCT(ASCPi), or CTgyn(ASCPi) credential does
not qualify certificants for a U.S. work visa. Visa
requirements are met through education and work
experience, not through attaining ASCPi certification.

This fall, Kazuya Takemura, MS, MLS(ASCPi), Division
of Blood Transfusion, Nagoya University Hospital,
in Nagoya, Japan, became the first student to be
awarded an internship opportunity for JAMT members
in the United States. Coordinated by the ASCP BOC
and funded by JAMT, the internship is only awarded to
ASCPi-certified or ASCPi-eligible individuals who are
JAMT members. The rotation was arranged at Loyola
University Medical Center, in Maywood, Ill. The JAMT
rotation provided an opportunity to promote the ASCPi
certification to Japanese laboratory professionals.
“This is our first collaborative effort with JAMT
and a first step at building a relationship with that
organization,” says Jennifer Young, CT(ASCP)CM,
Director of International Operations.
“We’re hoping this will encourage greater interest
in the certification exam and build awareness of
the ASCP BOC.”
During his week-long visit, Mr. Takemura met Eva
Wojcik, MD, FASCP, Pathology Department Chair, and
Clinical Directors while rotating through different
areas of the laboratory. He noted that laboratories in
Japan have a lot more automation, which results in
less staffing and smaller spaces in which to perform
diagnostic testing. Mr. Takemura works in a hospital
that has 1,000 beds and 60 medical laboratory
professionals.
“Kazuya expressed that he learned a lot being at
Loyola, and I’m sure the Loyola staff learned a lot
from Kazuya,” said Debra Johnson, Clinical Laboratory
Administrator at Loyola.
This initiative opens the doors to offer similar
opportunities to laboratory professionals in other
countries, according Pat Tanabe, MPA, MLS(ASCP)CM,
Executive Director of the ASCP Board of Certification.

their laboratory professionals to the United States to
gain exposure and knowledge.”

Institute of Medical Technology and manages the
laboratory and blood bank at Fatima Hospital, Baqai
Medical University. He is also a member of the
Pakistan Advisory Board, International Consortium
for ASCPi. He holds an M.Sc. in hematology
technology and a PhD in hematology.
“In Pakistan, very few medical technologists
are aware of the ASCPi certification and its
importance,” he says. “During the last two years,
the ASCP Pakistan Advisory Board organized
introductory lectures about ASCPi. Certifications
that I obtained are a ray of light for my medical
laboratory technologist and scientist colleagues.
ASCPi introduced me to new trends in the field and
enhanced my laboratory management skills.”
Tecnólogo Médico Internacional Renamed Científico de Laboratorio Médico Internacional
Effective Jan. 1, 2016, the Tecnólogo Médico
Internacional, MT(ASCPi) credential officially
transitioned into the Científico de Laboratorio
Médico Internacional, CLM(ASCPi) credential. The
ASCP is transitioning the Spanish version of the
MT(ASCPi) credential to the CLM(ASCPi) in order
to encompass the different terminologies utilized

in Latin America to refer to this
laboratory profession. Additionally, with this
change, the certification name will be aligned
with the equivalent English International Medical
Laboratory Scientist certification examination
name and its U.S. counterpart. All who have
received the Tecnólogo Médico Internacional,
MT(ASCPi) certification will be transitioned to the
CLM(ASCPi) credential, regardless of the year
in which they were certified. Therefore, as of
Jan. 1, 2016, all Tecnólogo Médico Internacional
certificants must use the CLM(ASCPi) credential.

The ASCP BOC Spanish Editorial Taskforce recently
revised the Spanish BOC Study Guide, the premier
study material for the CLM(ASCPi) examination. This
new eBook version of the study guide is available
starting January 2016. The eBook format includes a
self-assessment function which allows candidates to
test their knowledge of the study guide’s content.
The Spanish Editorial Taskforce is composed of
laboratory professionals who have volunteered
their time and expertise to help the BOC update
the guide. The members of the taskforce are:
