GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.
REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR.
(E. J. Dunn., F.G.S.)
Throughout the past year the staff of the Geological Survey has been fully employed in working
out the rock structure and general geology of the State, and the work has been supervised by me. Steady
progress has been made in elucidating the special features of the Ballarat and Bendigo Gold-fields, and
the data obtained will prove of lasting value.
Visits have been paid to the following localities, and in some cases several visits have been made
to the same locality :-Powlett, Daylesford, Ballarat, Bendigo, Kawarren, Timboon, Lang Lang, Grant,
Staweli, Welshpool, lnverloch, San Remo, Hurdy Gurdy Creek, Kyneton, Lauriston, Dereel, Warrnambool,
Port Fairy, Clunes, Myrtleford, BuffaJo River, Benalla, French Island, Euroa, Crib Point, Yea, Bonnie
Doon, Barnawartha, Beechworth, Eldorado, Tarrawingee, Tallangatta, Castleruaine, Chewton, ~Iansfield,
and J amieson.
Control has been exercised over the boring, no far as selecting the sites is concerned, and applications
for leases and for loans under the ~iining Development Acts have been dealt with. ~!embers of the staff
were occupied throughout the year as under :111r. lV. Baragwanath, iunior, Fndrrgronnd Rm·veyor, th:·mrghout the year has continued in charge
oi the Ballarat District. From January to the beginning of June was devoted to topographical and
surface geological field-work around Ballarat, the fic[d-work was completed by August, and some of
the plans were finished by the end of Ortober. Novmnber and December \vere spent for the most part
at Daylesford and Bendigo. Surveys of the following mines were also made :-Woah Hawp No. 2, New
Indicator, Reward, Ballarat Prospecting, Ballarat City, ~ew Kohinoor, Woah Hawp Canton.
Inspections were made and reports furnished on the following mines, &c. :--Newlyn Valley, in
re boring, Britannia, Ballarat East, Limonite deposit at Bradshaw's Creek, New Kohinoor (several visits),
Ballarat East Prospecting, West Berry Consols, Magotty Hill, Buninyong Rand, New Cornish mine,
Daylesford, Steele's Pioneer. Inspections of land were made at Taylor's Hill, Bradshaw's Creek, Durham
Lead, Lal Lal, Dereel, Allendale, Creswick, and ~apoleons.
Underground plans of the Ballarat West mines were prepared in the office, and only require the
titles to be inserted to complete them. The N cw Cornish United mine, Daylesford (Mitchell's and Bonnard's
shafts), was examined and reported on. Steele's Pioneer mine, Yandoit, was surveyed and reported upon.
At the Woah Hawp Canton and North Woah Hawp mines the sites of the nuggets on the indicator were
determined and placed on a sect.ion.
As assistants, ltfr. J. P. L. Kenny was at Ballarat up to 4th August; ltfr. P. J. Lacey acted as
chainman up to August; ltfessrs. J. Foster and lV. Eilwards as chainmen during the whole year; and
ltfr .. lV. Forbes acted as chainman during November; Mr. G. L. Nightingale acted as draughtsman
during the year.
Mr. Il. S. lVhitelaw.-During the year Mr. Whitelaw has continued the surface and underground
survey at Bendigo. The extension of the anticlines at the surface has been pushed on, and 45 miles of
additional length has been laid down on the map. A preliminary plan, showing the anticlines so far as
surveyed and the areas of sold land, has been published. It embraces a total length of 20 miles, extending
from Raywood, on the north, to ~fandurang, on the south, and a total width at the City of Bendigo of 4~
miles. A feature and general map of the whole area to scale of 20 chains to 1 inch is in course of preparation.
The longitudinal sections of the several lines of reefs in the 8 miles block showing the surface
pitch, and, where possible, the pitch underground, have been prepared, and three lines will be published
in this Annual. Besides the above, Bird's Reef mine was reported upon; the bore sites to test the slimes
deposited along the old course of Bendigo Creek below Huntly were laid out. The Pioneer mine, One Tree
Hill, was reported on. Along the New Chum line, the South Belle Vue, Eureka Extended, New Chum
Railway, Shenandoah, Shamrock, Garibaldi, New Chum Consolidated, Lansell's 222 and 180 mines, and the
Victoria Quartz shafts were sounded in connexion with the proposed drainage scheme. A report on marble
deposits, Limestone Creek, Wombat Creek, Native Dog Creek, Mitta ~fitta River, &c., was prepared and
sent in. ~Iatrix Reef, :M:clntyre's, and Goldsmith's Ueei, Jackass Flat, were inspected.
The lower
levels of Russell's Reef Amalgamated, near Lamiston, were surveyed. The Caledonia mine Castlemaine,
Harry L::mder mine Campbelltown, and New Golden Hill mine Fryerstown, were inspected. Anticlinal
lines through the Bendigonia Company's leases, Chewton, were surveyed. Sites were selected for shafts
on the Derby and Miller lines of reefs. A plan and section were made of the Sheepshead line of reefs, to
show the probable course of an auriferous reef now being worked at 311 feet in the Central Red, White, and
Blue mine. Twenty cases of fossilfl, each one accurately locat-ed, have been sent in to Head Office. 1Jc1r.
lVhitelaw has had as assistants during the year Mr. E. S. Usher, AssiHtant Field Geologist; Mr. J. J.
Oaldwell, foreman; Mr. lV. Farbes, chainman up to November; Mr. E. G. Egglestone, chainman (fossil
collector); and 111r. 0. J ..Thornpson, chainman. 2lfr. Rai.sbeck, draughtsman, resigned in April, and Mt.
Bonnet took up the position at the end of August.
Mr. 0. A. L. lVhitelaw.-On 21st January the topographical and geological work on tho central
and northern portion of the Jamieson sheet was resumed, and continued until 26th February. During
this period the Golden Gate mine, J amieson, was surveyed, so as to connect the tunnel and shaft workings.
This was done, and the shoot of gold worked out from the adit to the shaft. From the 28th of Febru:1ry
to 5th of March :Mr. Whitelaw accompanied the Hon. the Treasurer from Jamieson to Walhalla. From
29th March a survey was made of the surface and underground workings of the ::'~few Dempsey's and South
Dempsey's mines. Plans and sections were completed on 31st March, and sent in. In April the Hon. the
Minister of Mines was accompanied through the minefl at J amieson, Kevington, Gaflney's Creek, and
58
Walha.lla. From 27th April field work was resumccl., and the rough country in the north-east.cornel' of
the sheet, lying between the Goulburn and Jamieson Rivers, t<> the west of the Dividing Range, was
surveyed. On 25th May the camp was removed to Pheasant Creek, and the area between Flourbag Creek
and Mount Terrible was surveyed. Underground surreys were also made of the Elsie Mny, Routh Elsie
May, Enterprise, and Britannia mines. On the 29th June underground work was begun at the Star of
the West Extended, and continued to 8th September. The following mines were surveyed and sectionC(i
throughout :-Star of the West Extended, Victoria, Clancy's, Star Blocks, Pride of Goulburn, and North
Gleeson's. In addition, the workings of the Blue Ribbon, Straw and Marrows, Hungarian, Clancy's,
Sailor Bill's, Gleeson's, Alabama, Star Blocks, Champion, Star of the West, and Star of the West Extended
mines were connected into a group by surveys. Work done subsequently to the original surrey was
brought up to date. Upon 18th September the main camp was removed to Jamieson, and field work was
resumed. The Goulburn River and i~ affiuents have now been surveyed, both topographically and
geologically, from its source to Jamieson township. The survey is being continued up the Jamieson River,
and should be completed shortly in that area.
Sixty-nine square miles of the surface geology and topography have been completed within the
year; 5,100 feet of underground sectioning and 41,905 feet of mine surveying. Mr. W. Alien and
Mr. L. J. MoLe ish acted as chainmen.
Mr. W. H. Ferguson, Assistant Field Geologist, was engaged from 21st January to 27th September
in making a. geological and topographical surrey of the Stciglitz Goldfield, and in compiling statistics as
to the gold-field. Surveys of the Waterloo, Homeward Bound, Kinglock and South Kinglock mines were
made. Fossils were collected from the various zones in the Ordovician rocks of the locality, and their sites
were fixed by traverses. Plans and sections of the mines were sent in to Head Office.. A fossil occurrence
at Glenrowan was reported upon. The remainder of the year was employed in collecting rock specimens
and fossils from the Heathcotc beds at Knowsley East, from Nowa Nowa, and South Buchan districts.
:Mr. E. S. Egglest<>ne acted as chainman.
Mr. A. M. Howitt, Assistant Field Geologist, fl:om .January to the end of May was engaged in the
completion of the topographical and geological survey of the Talbot quarter sheet, and 8 square miles
of country were surveyed and laid down. During the same period several localities were inspected and
reported upon, as Newstead, Havelock, Wareek, :M:a.ryborough, Yandoit, Caralulup, Cockatoo, Craigie,
Majorca, and Alma, and some time was spent at Bendigo. Since .Tunc Mr. Howitt has been engaged in
superintending the transference of the geological collections from the vaults to the Museum, in readiness
for their display in the show cases that are being made for. their reception. He has attended to the
gathering together from vaults, offices, &c., of all books and publications, and their removal to the
Library, where they have been arranged on the shelves, and a catalogue has been compiled. He has also
assisted in dealing with the numerous land applications. Chainman, .1b-. E. T. il<lellber-g.
Mr. J. 8. Easton.-From 11th January to 21st March Mr. Easton was engaged at Head Office in
completing plans and reports of the areas surveyed in the Ovens River, Buckland River, and Happy
Valley localities; in laying down the field work and preparing plans of Eldorado Creek, between the
Woolshed and Eldorado; in making plan, &c., of the Red Jacket mine, Upper Buckland; and in writing
reports on the Yackandandah and Stanley districts, with complete records of the gold yields from the
several quartz mines so far as obtainable.
,
On the 21st of March he proceeded to Bethanga, and since then has surrcyed and laid down on a
plan about 200 square miles of country between the Mitta Mitta and Murray Rivers, in the parishes of
Berringa, Tatonga, Talgarno, Bungil, Bungil East, Thologolong, Bullioh, Granya, Wagra, and Yabba.
The area consists principally of metamorphic rocks, as schists and gneiss, with dykes of many
varieties; also much granitic rock, which appears to have resulted from metamorphic action. The Bethanga
gold-field occurs in this metamorphic area, also the Granya gold-field, which is sitt1atc on Cotton Tree
Creek, in granitic country. Jlfr. El. Poster acted as chainman throughout the year.
Mr. J. P. L. Kenny, Assistant Field Geologist, was engaged from January until 4th August at
Ballarat assisting Mr. Baragwanath and in preparing plans and reports on Bright and Freeburg, and
portion of quarter sheet 47 N.W. Plans and sections of the underground workings, with reports, were
prepared on the Lone Hand and Lone Hand Extended mines at Wandiligong. From the 9th August to
the end of the year was occupied in surveying the area of metamorphic rocks around Baruawartha, and
28 square miles of country has been surveyed and mapped. Reports were furnished on the Indigo
Pioneer gold mine and on Archer's wolfram mine. For the Museum a collection of specimens was made
from the metamorphic rocks. :From 14th to 25th November was spent at Beechworth and vicinity in
levelling along Reid's Creek and in making transverse sections between Beechworth and Eldorado.
Mr. P. J. Lacey acted as chainman from August to the end of the year.
Mr. E. 8. Usher.- From January to the beginning of April Mr. Usher was engaged in surveys of the
anticlinal lines at Mandurang, and in plotting the work. From April to July the surface outcrops of the
anticlines within the S-mile block were levelled. These were plotted on scale of 750 feet to 1 inch.
August, September, and October were employed in surveying on the Break o' Day Gully area, and the
outcrops of the anticlines were levelled, the contour work was filled in, and a complete plan made of the
whole area. From the beginning of November to the end of the year the fossil localities have been located
The localities were plotted

on the plan, and copies sent to Head Office. A detailed survey was also made along about 4 miles of the
Sheepshead line of reefs, the surface was levelled, and a longitudinal section prepared. The mines along this
portion of the Sheepshead line were accurately surveyed, so as to show the" pitch" and probable course of
the rich saddle reef worked in the Central Red White and Blue mine. Smaller surveys were made for
the purpose of locating shaft.s. A plan was prepared showing the trigonometrical work done on the
Bendigo gold-field.
Mr. D. J. Mahony, .M.Sc., ],.G.S., Professional Assistant, for the greater part of the year has been
engaged in editorial, petrological and general office work.

The Annual Report of the Geological Survey Laboratory is as under:-
Staff.
The Staff consists ofP. G. W. Bayly, Assoc. S.A.S.M., Chemist and Assayer, Officer-in-charge.
Alan G. Hall, Assoc. W.M.C., Assistant Chemist (senior).
A. MeN eilage, Mechanic.
StudentsJ. P. Taylor, Senior Student.
J. Clark, Junior Student.
E. E. Poole, Junior Student.
Simon Fraser, junior, Junior Student.
During the year Mr. A. A. Topp resigned from his position as Assistant Chemist (Junior) to take
up a position with the Cassrlis G.:M. Coy.; and :Mesrs. Opie, Love, and White completed their term of service
and have obtained good positions outside.
New Laboratory.
From the beginning of the year the New Laboratory has been in commission, and the old building
at Richmond was handed over to the Public Works Department.
The new building, which is splendidly equipped with apparatus suitable for carrying out the best
class of work, consists of large furnace room, large main laboratory, and ten smaller rooms for various
,
classes of work, office, stores, &c.
The operations of the year include a great nnmber of tests on clays and pigments, rock analyses,
and ore and mineral determinations.
A great many analyses of coal have been made owing to the development of the Powlett State
Coal Mine. Regul!l>f 3:n~lyses have been made of the slack coal from the mine.
Briquette Tests.
The boiler tests (stationary) show that, under working conditions, the briquettes from slack compare
very favorably with other fuels.

The cost of manufacture, taking all charges, and including cost of sleek coal in Melbourne, is
14s. 5d. per ton f.o.b. Melbourne. This estimate is based on the experimmtal manufacture of some
hundredweights of briquettes.
For household use the ovoid shape has proved a great success, and if this work be undertaken on
a large scale a successful industry might result.
Staiement of Assays.
The total number of samples received was 842, including 1,521 deterrninations.
Results have been classified as follows : A.-Analvses and Chemical Determinations.

The number of actual determin::>tious reported (1,521) represents a much larger number of distinct
The complete analyses at times involve the determination of as many a~l twenty
separate elements. Jlmcticc;,lly every determination is made in duplicate.
The number of samples received (842) and the deterrninations involvea (1,521) are considerably
higher than for any former year at the L<fboratory. This is to some extent due to the more convenient
situation of the Laboratory l.nnlcling.
StatJ.-The members of the Staff, although considerably short-handed, hrwe worked well and

THE GEOLOGICAL MUSEUM.
A serious hindrance to the work of the Geological Survey has been the absence of a museum, which
is an essential part of such an organiza·tion. During the past year a suitable building has been completed.
It is situated conveniently, as it faces Gisbornc-street and is on the continuation of the Collins-street tram
line. For security from fire it is quite isolated, but is near to the Geological Survey Library and Laboratory.
There are two floors-the ground floor and the basement-each 95 feet by 45 feet in the clear. Unfortunately
most of the area in the basement has been temporarily diverted to other purposes, and this greatly hampers
the museum work.
The accumulated specimens of the Survey will be arranged and exhibited wit.h a twofold objectfirst, to record and make available a knowledge of the geological conditions that prevail in Victoria ;
secondly, to bring irito notice and to encourage the utilization of the mineral resources of the State.
On the ground floor, which is reached by steps from the street, show cases with storage cabinets
beneath will be arranged in such a manner as to illustrate the geological sequence and the distribution of
the rocks, minerals, fossils, and economic materials in their proper order.
Diagrams and explanatory sections will be hung on the walls, so that students and the general public
will be enabled to obtain a rapid and accurate knowledge of Victorian geology in the most facile manner.
In the basement it is intended to display the varied mineral products of economic value, such as
ores of the different metals, building stones, marble, slate, pigments, clay, soils, as well as characteristic
examples of rock structure, casts of the gold nuggets, &c.
For educational and for practical purposes the Museum will be of great utility, while it will also
afford the officers of the Survey Staff opportunities of comparison and of reference that will prove most
beneficial in the carrying out of survey operations.
GEOLOGICAL SuRVEY LIBRARY.
The new library is right opposite the Gordon Monument, at the top of Collins-street. The room
attached to the laboratory has been fitted up as a library, and the various geological publications, such
as periodicals, magazines, geological survey monographs, records, bulletins, maps, plans, sections, &c., that
hitherto have been stored away and inaccessible, can now be made use of. Exchanges from other geological
surveys are arranged according to their countries, and the maps are placed in cabinets to preserve them
and so that they may be readily available.
Many gaps exist in the exchange literature, and steps are being taken to remedy this defect so far
as possible. The library is more particularly valuable for reference and for those specially interested in
geological studies.
All the Victorian published quarter-sheet maps and underground surveys, plans, and sections will
be arranged and catalogued so that they may be quickly found. Catalogues on the card system are in
course of preparation, and they will enable any particular subject or article to be looked up. It will take
a year or two to complete these. It is hoped that the present nucleus will rapidly grow, and that it will
prove helpful to science workers and to the public generally.
ANTICLINAL MAP OF BENDIGO.
For some time past Mr. H. S. Whitelaw has been engaged in extending the anticlinal lines beyond
the originalS-mile block. They have now been surveyed from Mandurang to Raywood, a distance in
north and south direction of 20 miles, and for a width ranging from 2 to 4 miles. There are still two areas
to be added-The Break o' Day and Neilborough.
It is intended to complete a new geological and topographical survey of the whole tract, and then
lay down these lines on the map, but to provide for immediate necessities a rough plan is published showing
the position and extent of .the anticlines and the land that has been sold over or adjacent to these linos
of reefs. The total length of the anticlines in the block as published amounts to 440 miles. It is along
these lines that the rich auriferous saddle reefs occur one below the other, and in some cases as many as
30 reefs have been proved each under the other. By mapping out the anticlines the sites can be fixed
for shafts on any line that is desired, and the great losses incurred formerly in misplacing them can be
avoided. In marking out leases this plan will be useful, and ganerally it will be found serviceable to the
mining community.
The surface outcrops of these anticlines are by no means straight, and this is accentuated by the
varying heights of the surface. Generally the anticlinal plane is not vertical, and consequently the outcrop
as it crosses hills and hollows appears to be further east or west, as the case may be, on the plan. As the
nsual dip of the anticlinal plane is east, where the anticline crosses a gully it is further east than where it
crosses a hill. If these lines were laid dov.'ll on a horizontal plane they would be less tortuous.
Where the lines are thickened indicates where work has been done along the anticlines, even if only
to a very moderate depth. The total length on these lines so far worked amounts to about 30 miles, and
therefore there yet remains over 400 miles of these anticlinal lines untouched.
As the future prosperity of mining in the State depends largely on those lines being resolutely attacked,
every effort should be made to induce systematic shaft sinking along them. Much capital will be required
to place the industry on a stable footing, but this should be forthcoming when the true conditions on this
field are understood.

NoTE oN THE PITCH LrNE, NEw CHuM, GARDEN GuLLY, AND HusTLERS LINES oF REEFS, BENDIGO.
A diagram is being prepared which will show a line of pitch !tlong each of the lines of reefs in the
8-mile block. In this Annual the lines are shown through the three principal worked lines.
So far as the workings extend actual surveys have been made to determine the oourse of the pitch;
elsewhere the pitch of the surface beds has been utilized. The value of these lines of pitch in carrying out
scientific mining can scarcely be overrated, for it will be possible by means of such lines to determine even
before a pick is put in the grotmd the levels at which the several favorable zones for gold will be encountered
from one end of the line of reefs to the other. Of course, the correctness of this method will depend on
the accuracy of the observations made, and will be grcf~ter when the line can be surveyed through
shafts than when reliance has to be placed entirely on surface observations. These lines serve to show
where mines are still in the poorer zones, and where additional depth is essential to be attained before
improved yields can be looked for. By means of these lines the courses of the several rich saddle reefs
can be traced along the anticlines, and their approximate depths from the surface can be determined before
the shafts are even commenced.
In selecting sites for new mines, these lines will afford a safe guide as to the most favorable positions
along the anticlines. They also explain the reasons why on the different lines good yields were
obtained in positions nearly opposite one another. When the zones can be determined they will be bounded
by lines parallel to the pitch lines, which are actually the course of a particular bed traced along the
anticline.
At present it is only possible to trace a bed along one anticline and not to trace the same bed along
the next anticline ; but as cross-cuts are made connecting the several anticlines, it will be possible to run
the same horizon out on as many anticlines as are connected, and this will be a great advance, but it will
require time and very careful surveys. Ultimately the whole field can be so tied in that it will be possible
to locate the most favorable sites to look for gold on any of the anticlines from one end of the field to the
other. The value of such work in practical mining will be
and it is towards that end the present
work of the survey is being directed at Bendigo.
MINERAL SPRINGS.
There are many mineral springs in the State, but they are mostly confined to a limited area. The
accompanying map will serve to show how they are distributed. They appear t{) occur along lines of
fracture, and no doubt rise from deep-seated sources. These fractures probably run in a direction of about
N. 10° W. A line drawn through the most westerly springs extends from the most southern ones at
Geclong, northward to the next group at Ballan, then through Hepburn, and still further northward to the
spring near where Joyce's Creek joins the Loddon River. Eastward of the Hepburn group arc the numerous
springs around Daylesford, and this it> the principal group. Drawing a line parallel to that running through
the Geelong and Joyce's Creek springs but further cast, the Drysdale and Blackwood springs would be
intersected. The Coimadai spring is a little east of this line. Still further east is the Kyneton group of
springs, and another line would cut the Frankston and Donnybrook springs. A spring is also reported
at Stratford, which is far away to the eastward from all the rest. The relation between these springs and the
volcanic agencies that have been so widespread is uncertain. It is probable that in the same belt of oountry
in which these springs occur there are others that are hidden by basalt and other tertiary rocks. These
springs yield potable waters of great excellence and that arc sparkling with the contained carbonic acid
gas. They are largely availed of for their palatable qualities, but, in addition, they possess curative
properties of great value. In many cases reserves have been made around them to secure them from
injury, and some attention is directed towards rendering their waters more accessible and to improve
the appearance of the surroundings.
In some of the mines around Daylesford, notably the New Cornish Mine, mineral waters have been
cub in the workings, while the presence of carbonic acid gas proves troublesome in the mines. At Welshman's mine, a libtlc west of Maldon, the gas is so troublesome that a cresset had to be kept continually burning
at the foot of the shaft. At some of the springs travertine incrustations have formed. They consist of
carbonate of lime principally, with some silica, magnesia, and oxide of iron. The Geelong springs rise on
the beach between high and low water.
NoTE oN THE IRON SMELTING FuRNACE, LAL LAL, BY MR.
W.
BARAGWANATH.
The accompanying photograph of the Lal Lal Iron Furnace, taken while work was in progress, showa
the only attempt made to work an iron-ore deposit in the State.
The furnace shown was erected abou~ 1881, on the western bank of the Moorabool River, east of the
township of Lal Lal. A furnace consisting of a boiler shell lined with fire-brick had been tried formerly
on the same site, but the output was only about 1! tons per day. With the blast furnace illustrated up to
5 tons of hard iron, or 2i to 3 tons of soft iron per day, could be produced. The furnace was built of
locally-quarried sandstone, lined with Stourbridge fi:re-brick. Air was supplied by a type of air pump
compressor, a receiver 30 feet in length and 6 feet in diameter maintaining a uniform supply at a pressure
of about 15 lbs. per inch. Three blasts entered the furnace. The fuel supply consisted of locally burnt
charcoal, which was found to be too soft, and was replaced by coke obtained from Geelong and Ball~rat.
Limestone for flux was obtained also near Geelong. Carting to and from the railway was by bullock waggon,
afterwards replaced by a tram line, railway rails being supplied by the Government. A fall in the price
of cast iron from £10 when work was started to £4 10s. prevented the success of the company, a limited
liability one, and work ceased during the eighties. The quality <d the iron produced was reported as
very good but hard, and was used very largely for truck wheels and sta.mper shoes iu the Balla.rat mines.
