Isn’t it uplifting to be welcomed into the neighborhood with garlands at the entries and festive bows on the mailboxes? Volunteers
make it all a reality. Just another reason to love Oak Meadow. A
big THANK YOU to all those who hosted and attended several
parties to make bows, to those who went door to door taking orders and to those who attached bows to the mailboxes. Another
big THANK YOU to Eleanor Settle who sees that the entrances
are decorated with garland. It is beautiful and well worth the effort. There might be a few bows left. If you missed the chance to
order, call Colette at 408-440-7301 or Pam at 493-2141.
OMWC took the opportunity to show-off the baking skills of
our members by having a wide assortment of desserts to sell at
the Fall Festival & Chili Cook-off. The Halloween cupcakes went
fast, along with the brownies, pumpkin bars and cookies. There
were even gluten-free desserts to be sure everyone could indulge.
Proceeds were added to the Swim Club coffers. Again, a big
THANK YOU to the many volunteers who baked and served at
several booths throughout the afternoon.
Kids will be warm at night thanks to a pajama drive held by Oak
Meadow Elementary School to provide pjs to their sister school,
Serna Elementary. OMWC supported that drive by collecting
pajamas for the children. Another THANK YOU to those who
donated to this worthy project and to Emily Marshall and Marcia
Krolik for pulling it together.
It is official the long-hoped-for Mom’s Playgroup has been organized and is off and running. The playdates were held throughout November at different parks and playgrounds in the area
with both morning and after school times. One session included
a Mom & Me music lesson and playtime. Sounds like fun. For
more info call Audrey Cox at 210-908-9341. And, this calls for
another THANK YOU to Audrey.

Meadowlark
Oak Meadow
Homeowners Association
NEWS
The year is quickly drawing to a close, the main part of the
annual membership drive is over and HEB gift cards have been
distributed to drawing winners. If you haven’t paid your dues yet
for 2014-2015, or you are a newcomer, of course you may still
join. Membership is never closed! Just contact membership
chair, Olive Whelan, or any other board member. (A roster is
listed elsewhere in this newsletter.)
We had good response to the membership drive, but there are
still some residents who are “on the fence” about joining. They
may wonder: Why should I support the HOA? What does it do
for me? We thought we would answer these questions with some
information on how the membership funds are used:
1. Plants and supplies, plus water and electricity for entrances.
We have three neighborhood entrances with a total of five
planting beds.
2. Mowing of greenbelts along NW Military Hwy. and Huebner
Road.
3. Repair and maintenance of the five stone entrance walls.
There is also a special fund to replace walls as the need arises.
4. Directors and Officers Insurance for board members.
5. Cost of mailing the Meadowlark monthly newsletter.
6. Eblast program, which sends notices of activities or events
within Oak Meadow. These emails are normally sent out
once a month unless a special circumstance arises such as
unusual criminal activity or a dangerous situation within
our neighborhood. Eblasts are sent only to those residents
who subscribe.
7. HEB gift cards for the annual membership drive drawing.
8. National Night Out celebrations at the park. (These are not
held every single year.)
9. Movies at the park.
10. Coffee Klatch. This is open to all residents and is an informal
get-together during which board members answer residents’
questions and discuss their concerns.
11. Annual membership meeting.
12. Donations to the two churches in our neighborhood for use
of their facilities for various events.
If, for no other reason, your $40.00 annual dues are well spent
on just the upkeep of the entrances and greenbelts. Just imagine
what they would look like with no stone walls, planting beds or
lighting, and mowing of the greenbelt only done twice a year by
the state. The board of directors takes its fiduciary responsibilities
seriously and works hard to insure good stewardship of each
member’s funds. Be assured no discretionary spending is done
without much discussion and vote taking.
Many thanks to those who have already joined. You and your
membership dues are what keep our neighborhood a great place
to live. We could do nothing without you!

Easily Visible House Numbers are Important for Safety
While driving in the subdivision about 8 PM last week trying to distribute some of the HEB gift cards to winners of the Homeowners Association’s drawing, I was very concerned to see such an absence of visible
house numbers. Many numbers are on the front of the house placed
above the driveway lights. The light glare prevents the house number
from being seen after dark. Other numbers on the curb are worn off
with only a few characters visible. Some on mailboxes have missing or
faded numbers. Some homes have no house numbers posted at all.
-Fully furnished kitchen, washer & dryer.

Suspicious Vehicle
Take a look at your house numbers in the dark. If they are not readily
visible, emergency personal may have a hard time finding your house.
The Emergency Medical Service vehicles and San Antonio Police and
Fire Departments’ GPS devices may not always be accurate in areas like
ours with irregular street numbers. On streets that have entry from two
directions the house numbers should be visible from both sides. A few
minutes spent looking for house numbers can mean the difference between life and death.
Dog and Cats Need Updated ID with Phone Numbers
Be sure to put the proper ID on your pet. Update your phone number(s)
when you change numbers; you can order a name tag online or at your
vet’s office. While you are waiting for the name tag to be processed, consider taping a small piece of paper with your name and phone number
on the pets’ collar. Please look into having your pet “chipped” by your
vet; a small price to pay for a chance to be reunited with a wandering
pet.

Thank you to all that came
out and participated in the
Fall Festival and Chili Cookoff. It was a great time that
raised some much needed
funding for the off season.
I would like to welcome Jeff Kraft to the pool board. He has graciously
agreed to be a part of the team. The pool board is sad to be losing Cara
Taylor to a move, but we wish her well in her new adventure and thank
her for her being a board member. Lastly, I want to thank my husband,
Tim Clark, for his years of service to the board. Tim resigned from the
board, but promised me he would council me in “all things pool” if I
begged… which I’m sure I will.
The OMSC’s annual meeting was November 2nd. We had a small turnout, but a good meeting. We covered accomplished items, as well as future plans. Here are the discussed items of accomplishment this year:
• 2014 had a slight increase in membership numbers. Charging tax on
the memberships has taking care of the burden of the sales tax liability.
• The sales tax, which is paid on the memberships and concession sales,
was changed from yearly payments to quarterly payments this year. This
means that the pool paid double the amount that it usually does per
calendar year. The 2013 payment was paid in early 2014, and the 2014
payments have been paid throughout the year. This benefits the pool in
the future by not having a large tax liability due when the pool is at its
most cash poor point in the year.
•
The pool was drained in March to replace the broken in-wall steps

and patch up any potential leaks in the shell of
the pool.
A massive leak was found and patched in May.
The Swim Team’s Swim-a-thon raised enough
money to pay for the leak detection, plus most
of the fix.
There has been a great influx of board members
in the last year and a half. With an active board,
we have been able to do more activities for the
community, such as the Spring Fling, the 4th of
July Celebration, and the Fall Festival. We hope
to add more in coming years.
Financial records will be available on the website
www.oakmeadowswimclub.com for anyone who
would like to review them.
Even with $6000+ in repairs, $2000 in non budgeted
tax payments, and $5000 in water loss, the pool has
almost made it to the end of the year in the black. I
hope this gives our neighbors faith that the pool and
tennis courts are a worthy cause. My Christmas wish
is for a solid 2015 with no major expenses. Happy
Holidays to you and yours.
