At this time of year I have noticed that people are generally kinder to each other, children are better behaved and the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas are everywhere. Of course there is the opposite that occurs also. Many people are so caught up in the preparations of the “big day” shopping for the sales, baking, wrapping gifts, writing Christmas cards, they become frazzled and miss the beauty and peace of the season. We can and should prepare for Emmanuel (God with Us) in our hearts and minds. While we watch for and anticipate the Christ Child’s birth in the days leading up to Christmas let us examine what our busy-ness contributes to the joy of the season. As we think of the peace and good will toward men, let us look at what that means in January after all the decorations are stored in the attic, the gifts have been exchanged, and the baked goods and candy are given away. We can then start our New Year’s resolutions with the best of intentions. Both during the season and after, there will be problems to face in our world, in our nation, in our community. The homeless and the hungry, the sick and the shut-ins are going to be here after the holidays. The shelter will be bracing for another very cold winter. Meals will need to be prepared, served, and delivered. The Clothing Bank will need warm donations (as will Community Aid). The uninsured and underinsured will need to see the doctor and diabetics will need education classes. All of these ministries will need donations of time, funding, and much prayer. The Hanover community is very generous with their time, talents, and During gatherings of extended family members life events and stories are remembered and retold often with laughter. Have you ever been surprised by a sibling’s or a cousin’s rendition of a shared experience because it differed from your recollections? It happens. The same effect happens when it comes to spiritual events. The song, “Do You Hear What I Hear,” by Carrie Underwood, is a musical telling about the birth of Christ, about the great spiritual event of Christmas from the different perspectives of those who witnessed it. It is important to understand how those who do the work on a daily basis see Who We Are and What We Do! Provide-A-Lunch Kate Schroeder, of St. Matthew Lutheran Church helped me realize the answer to my dilemma through her proclamation of The Gospel on Sunday. You see, everyone I have listed above and those whom I have mistakenly overlooked are perfect examples of the men in the Bible (Matthew 25:14-30) who were given talents by their master when he journeyed from home. The men realized the responsibility bestowed upon them and invested their talents. Their money increased in value. Today, we do not speak of talents as money but rather service to mankind. Every person, no matter how they use their talents does so out of their love of Almighty God and their fellow man and their reward or thank you, comes in their opportunity to serve. So I will simply say “Thank you for your blessings to so many and may God continue to bless us all through your service to him and his children.” – Frank George, Provide-A-Lunch Coordinator ____________________________________________ How do I say Thank You? Keeping with the spirit of the Thanksgiving Holiday I wanted to recognize everyone who makes the ministry of The Hanover Area Council Of Churches P.A.L. Ministry the success that it has been for so many years reaching out to so many in this community. But how do I do justice to everyone who has invested so much? I cannot begin to list the names of individuals who contribute so much in the donations of food, money, and necessary operating supplies. The list of business owners who make certain they share their food with us on a weekly and sometimes daily basis is huge and that list continues to grow. The volunteers who just stop in to help wherever needed. The volunteer plumbers, electricians, carpenters, the office staff who volunteer their time over and above their usual working hours and the endless list of church team members who tirelessly, day-in and day-out, 365 days a year, come to our kitchen, use it as their own & prepare some of the most delicious culinary delights. How do I do justice to them all? Actually, Pastor In Everything Give Thanks! And this is why one wants to continue returning to volunteer!! Follow me…enter the back door, ascending the stairs to the portal of the building where countless generous donations are received, where trash collection and recycling occur. Move into the inner sanctum, passing the walkin freezer into the back room of the kitchen, where several long term dedicated volunteers give you a friendly smile and greeting. They are busily performing important tasks that contribute to the success of delivering lunch to those in need. Move into the kitchen, where your scribe the log with your name and time-in, observing today’s church team of volunteers prepping and preparing the meal of the day. It’s impressive to think this is repeated 365 days of the year, many of the churches scheduling themselves so never a day passes that a meal is not served. God gave Your initial task (unless pulled in another needed direction) is checking the drinking the best gift options on the designated shelves, usually requiring a trip upstairs to the second floor for additional liquids to replenish the shelves. Along the way, more encounters at Christmas. with very dedicated, friendly volunteers, cordial greetings ensue with innocent, funWhat will you filled banter and friendly jabbing (which usually continues throughout the morning!) And WOW is the second floor impressive with the clothing bank, run give back well by all the highly committed volunteers. Back on the first floor, drink shelves are refilled. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone…individuals, faith communities, civic groups, service and social clubs, and businesses. Without the vital support we receive from everyone we could not offer the assistance to those in need. It is in the services we give that we, on behalf of all, demonstrate “Emmanuel, God with us” during this season and every season of the year. Thank you seems inadequate for so very much. The four gospels in the New Testament also differ in their renditions of the same event. This is not a problem. It is a blessing, a gift to the world. Each of our testimonies, or witness, is needed in our world. A person never knows who will be touched by the Holy Spirit through their personal testimony. Each of our testimonies needs to be repeated over and over again, for the same reason as previously stated. The ministries of the Hanover Area Council of Churches are filled with God’s activity, of spiritual events. I invite each of the clients, volunteers, staff, representatives, donors and partners who have recognized God’s activity in a ministry to tell others about it. I wonder what would happen if all of us spread the good news that God is still very active and involved in our world as much as those witnesses of the first Christmas spread their good news. I wonder… “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). —Matthew 1:23 We want to say THANK YOU to everyone who dined with us at Hoss’s on November 16. ____________________________________________________________ Look in February’s issue for the amount we raised. During the winter months we have an increased need for sleeping bags, long underwear, winter coats and waterproof gloves for men, women and children. If you have any of these items please drop them off at the Council building Monday thru Saturday between 8 am and 12:30 pm. 4 Continued from page 3, “Volunteer” kitchen, donations are sorted and directed to their appropriate locations, some staying, some being further donated to other humanitarian agencies. Following up soon after, are donations from three local grocery stores and coffee café, which go through the process of being sorted into that which the center can use, and that which is sent along to the other agencies. The state food bank delivers ordered goods, which are separated and placed in their designated locations. Entering the walk-in freezer is required numerous times, and upon returning to more sane temperatures, you feel like you’re in a fog…er…your glasses frost up and your visual field is comically compromised for a few minutes! Observing the above activity you would think there was confusion everywhere, but it’s the exact opposite, everybody knows what needs to be done and synchronously it gets done. Throughout the morning numerous smaller donations arrive from generous individuals and companies, which go through the same processes as the larger donations. All donations are greatly appreciated and used!! Through it all there is a warm, fun filled presence with everyone in completing the tasks and contributing to an important community need, successfully achieved by many, many dedicated volunteers. The morning passes quickly and successfully because of the single goal of completing the center’s mission, everyone contributing, everyone’s contribution equally important. As served lunch is approaching, the buzz of activity slows a bit, some partaking of the day’s offerings. Sitting at the lunch table in the back room good conversation and discussion transpires. There is talk of the menu, “chili tomorrow,”…with the response, “but tomorrow is supposed to be warm!” Give the gift The time enjoyed in the last four hours culminates with the completing of the time-out of yourself... log and extending good wishes and farewells to everyone. The motivation to volunteer in such an environment is easy with all the genuine, VOLUNTEER! unselfish people who participate willingly, together, and with a genuine desire to continue returning week after week. It has a grounding feature in the fact that a basic human characteristic is being fulfilled, that being,…helping your fellow man. It is not a sacrifice of your personal time (all our time is personal with everything we do), but a positive use of a section of your personal time that feels productive and worthwhile…time well spent. Self recognition is not desired or needed, either. We just want to be PALs together serving a sadly existing need among our fellow human beings…Hunger…thus, PAL. —Robert Benscoter, Volunteer driver for PAL Check Out Our On-Going Volunteer Opportunities Building Committee—We need persons on our Building Committee to address repair & upkeep issues with our facilities and assess future needs. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 am. Fund Development Committee—We need 5 people to serve on the committee who are interested in growing our general fund donations. These funds are used to pay utility bills (ex. water, sewer, gas, garbage), provide for general building upkeep, salaries, etc. Meals-On-Wheels—We need Drivers & Runners as well as substitutes. Interested persons should be available for one week on an assigned month for one hour each day Monday through Friday between 11 am and Noon. Valid drivers license and insurance for drivers is required. Receptionist—To serve at our front desk on 1st, 3rd, & 5th Friday from 9am-1pm. Duties include answering the phone, assisting clients, & occasional light office work. Sunday Worship Leaders—We are looking for volunteers to lead our 30 minute worship service on Sunday mornings from 10:30 AM to 11 AM. It is a time of personal reflection, sharing, and prayer. Ruth’s Harvest—Additional individual volunteers and/or teams to assist with packing/delivering backpacks to local elementary schools. If interested call the Council at 633-6353. 5 Ruth’s Harvest Going Strong! Ruth’s Harvest is continuing to be blessed. We still have three school and 335 students being served. Even with this high number, we are still getting the support we need to keep it running smoothly. As of the first of the year we will have three new teams joining our ministry. This will put us up to about 15 teams and about 130 volunteers. We want to thank all the churches and individuals who support his ministry. We want to express our appreciation to Bill and Linda Schlitzer for talking to the Rommel Companies in Linthicum Maryland (near BWI) about Ruth’s Harvest. This company has a fundraiser called Golfing for Kids where all proceeds go to children’s charities. After they heard what we do they wanted to be part of it. Rommel Co. gave us a huge donation of food and gift cards which will be used wisely. This company gave to other charities in their area but to give to us in Hanover Pa makes it even more special. We deeply appreciate all the wonderful support that is given to the children. We have received thank you notes from the families whose child receives a bag, expressing their appreciation. With the holidays coming there will be no drop off days on Monday, Dec. 22 and Monday, Dec. 29. We will start receiving donations again on Jan. 5, 2015. All those involved with Ruth’s Harvest want to wish all of you a Joyous Holiday and a healthy New Year! Diabetes Education Classes Offered at HACC Our Community Health Ministry has received a $3,000.00 Grant from the York County Community Foundation, Edgar I. Garrett Fund, to operate a Diabetes Education Program and help provide testing supplies for uninsured and underinsured persons in the community. We will be taking names and phone numbers for people interested in having nutrition education as a first step of ongoing discussion and the learning process of living with and managing diabetes.
