August 3, 1888 - A coroner's inquest was conducted on the death by casualty of Joseph K. Lutz. A 5-page report
appears in Gibson Circuit Court records. Witness testimony includes: Mary Lutz (his wife), Joseph A. Lutz (his
son), Martin J. Lutz (his son), Frank J. Ziliak (his neighbor). The report basically concludes that Joseph K. Lutz
died by accidental drowning on his property while taking a bath. No signs of violence were present on the body,
according to the Justice of the Peace, Harris Gwaltney. Peter Ottmann, M.D., officially declared that Joseph K.
Lutz "came to his death by drowning in his pond on said Joseph K. Lutz's farm."

Sister Mary Lucille, O. S. U. died at St. Rose's hospital in St. Louis, Mo., Friday afternoon, April 21, from the
effects of an operation performed two weeks before. The body arrived in Paola on Sunday morning and was
taken at once to the Ursuline Convent chapel from which the funeral was held Monday morning. Sister
Lucille who was known in the world as Mary Lutz was born in Haubstadt, Indiana, Oct. 13, 1874. She entered
the Ursuline Convent in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1888 and made her vows in 1891. In 1895 she came with the
little band of pioneer Sisters to Paola, Kansas, to lay the foundation of the present Ursuline Academy. A
young sister, with life and its possibilities before her, she consecrated herself to God in the services of the
struggling community she had helped to found, and which she was destined to serve for over twenty-five
years. For many years her labors lay in the Academy as music teacher where she was loved by the pupils who
came under her gentle influence. Later she taught at Olney, Ill., and Rosedale, Kansas. Two years ago, failing
health forced her to give up her work and she has been a patient sufferer ever since, waiting resignedly for the

day when her Heavenly Spouse should call her home. Hers was a genial, loving, refined nature, dedicated to
service and suffering from her earliest years. She has tasted of the joys of life promised to God's elect in this
world and she has felt the crosses without which we cannot follow Him. She lived her life with her soul
attuned to all the harmonies of the musical world and she has gone now to her heavenly home, which has been
the goal of all her labors since she made her vows at the foot of God's altar thirty-one years ago. And we,
whom she has left on earth, know that she has joined those pure souls who sing eternal songs and "Follow the
Lamb whither soever He goeth." The funeral Mass was said in the Convent Chapel Monday morning, April 24
at nine o'clock and the body was laid to rest in Mount Calvary, the Convent cemetery. "May she rest in
peace."

William J. Lutz, 97, died at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Gibson General Hospital in Princeton. He and his
brother, Orlando, were co-founders of Lutz Brothers Plumbing and Heating in Haubstadt. William retired in
1953. He was born Nov. 5, 1890 in Gibson County and resided his entire life in Haubstadt. He was a member
of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 194 and was the oldest member of that
post. Lutz was an U.S. Army Veteran of World War I. Preceding him in death was his wife, Christine Lutz, on
July 15, 1980. Surviving are a brother, Neil Lutz of Fort Branch and several neices and nephews.
Arrangements are pending at Wade Funeral Home.

HAUBSTADT (Special) - Services for Rose B. Greubel, 84, will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Sts. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church. The Rev Fr. Clarence Lindauer will officiate. Burial follows in the church cemetery. Mrs.
Greubel died at 1:40 a.m. Friday in her home in Haubstadt after a long illness. Born Aug. 1, 1876, near here, she
had lived in the community all her life. She was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul church Altar Society and the

Lawrence L. Lutz, age 49, prominent farmer, died at 7:35 o'clock Thursday evening at his home southeast of
Haubstadt, following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services will be held at 8 o'clock Monday morning at
the home, with continued services at 8:15 o'clock at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic church, in charge of Rev. Fr.
N. J. Forve. Interment in the church cemetery. Surviving to mourn the death of Mr. Lutz is the widow, Carrie,

Naomi M. Lutz, 86, died at 1:25 a.m. Sunday, April 21, at Gibson General Hospital in Princeton. She was born
May 22, 1904, in Haubstadt and resided in rural Ft. Branch. Mrs. Lutz was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic
Church in Ft. Branch. Preceding in death were two brothers, Edward and Paul Tenbarge, both died in 1990.
Surviving are her husband, Cornelious "Neal" Lutz, Ft. Branch; a daughter, Mrs. Donna Campbell of Redwood
City, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Ice of Princeton and Evelyn McReynolds of Dover, Del.; two grandchildren, Mark

Bertha A. Boren, 89, 1228 Busserson St., died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was a member of St.
John's Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John's, and a practical nurse. Born Jan. 14,
1896 in Haubstadt, she was the daughter of Martin and Minnie (Kreeb) Lutz. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Absalom Boren, in 1954. Survivors include a daughter, Hermania Smith, Vincennes; three sons, Enos
Boren, Indianapolis, LaVerne Boren, Tokoyo, and Derrell Boren, Noblesville; 11 grandchildren; and nine great
grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at
10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Erbacher officiating. Burial will be in St.
Peter and Paul Cemetery, Haubstadt. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Duesterberg-Fredrick Funeral
Home, where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Ladies Auxiliary Knights of
St. John's vigil service at 7 p.m.

Railroad Emplye Stricken as He Starts Vacation
A. O. Boren, 65, a C & E I employee, died suddenly at 6:45 a.m. Thursday while on a visit with relatives at
Evansville, Ind. Mr and Mrs. Boren were visiting with his brother-in-law. The couple had just started their
vacation. Death was attributed to a heart condition. Boren resided at 1228 Busserson street here in Vincennes. For
the past 32 years he had been associated with the C & E I railroad. He was a signal maintainer. He was a familiar
figure in Vincennes, generally carrying his small dog on his shoulder. A native of Gibson county, he was born
Jan. 12, 1889, the son of James and Mary Lowe Boren. Survivors are: the widow, the former Bertha Lutz; a
daughter, Miss Hermania Boren, Vincennes; three sons, Enos Boren, Evansville; LaVerne Boren, armed forces,
Tokoyo; Darryl Boren, Cynthiana; five grandchildren. He was a member of St. John's Catholic church of
Vincennes. The body was taken to the Duesterberg Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Friday.
Tentative funeral arrangements are set for Monday. The remains are to be taken to the Ziliak-Wade Funeral Home
in Haubstadt and services conducted from St. Peter and Paul Catholic church in Haubstadt. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.

Cletus Lutz, 84, of Big Cynthiana Road, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Deaconess Hospital. He retired in 1968

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Surviving are a son, Jack; a sister, Anna Mae Tenbarge; and five grandchildren.
Services 11 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 9

Matilda Lutz
Matilda "Tilly" Marie (Helfert) Lutz, age 83, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at
Deaconess Hospital. Mrs. Lutz was a homemaker and a former member of St. Wendel Catholic Church.
She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to shop.
She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Terry Carlton and Shirley and Tom Stolz, all of
St. Philip, Ind., Sandy and David Schmitt of St. Joseph, Ind., and Brenda and Gary Smith of Evansville, four
sisters, Helen Bastain with whom she lived for almost 15 years, Olivia Glass and Rose Ann Yancey, all of
Evansville, and Mildred Lovell of St. Joseph, Ind., two brothers, Elmer "Butch" Helfert of Evansville and Edwin
Helfert of Poseyville, Ind.; 12 grandchildren, Mark, Tim and Tom Carlton, Joy Johnson, Christopher, Tiffany and
Nicholas Smith, Jacinta Hilgeman, Phil and Joe Schmitt and T.J. and Andrea Stolz; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 10, 2005, at St. Wendel Catholic Church, Rev. Jack
Durchholz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

FORT BRANCH — Jack R. Hollis,79, of Fort Branch, Ind., died at his home on Nov. 27, 2005. He was born to
John and Bertha (Thompson) Hollis on July 9, 1926, in Oakland City, Ind.
He was retired from Emge Meat Packing and was a janitor at the Fort Branch Public Library for eight years after
his retirement. He was a Army veteran of WWII, having served in the Pacific Theater. He attended Holy Cross
Catholic Church, was a member of Fort Branch VFW Post 2714, the American Legion, and the Fort Branch
Masonic Lodge 696.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Mayer) Hollis, on Oct. 9, 1993.
Jack is survived by three children, Judy Richardson and her husband, Bill of Lawrenceville, Ill., Jackie Hollis of
Fort Branch, Ind., and John and his wife, Stephanie Hollis also of Fort Branch; and four grandchildren, Andy and
Abby Hollis and Hannah and Haley Richardson
Services for Jack will be Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Cross Church in Fort Branch,
with Father Tony Ernst and Father Paul Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with the VFW
Post 2714 conducting graveside military rites.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Stodghill Funeral Home located on Hwy 168 West in Fort Branch.

MILDRED LUTZ
PRINCETON -- Mildred Jean (Arvin) Lutz, 77, died Friday, March 14, 2003, peacefully at her home in
Princeton. She was born July 28, 1925 in Princeton. She attended St. Joseph Grade School in Princeton and
graduated high school at Ferdinand Academy of the Immaculate Conception. After graduation she was employed
at Gibson County Welfare Department. She had been a bookkeeper for Cable Tool & Bradford Supply for many
years, and went to work for Baldwin Building & Loan and then with her husband operated Lutz Appliance in
Princeton for 16 years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Princeton. She lived
in Princeton all her life. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed playing cards. Surviving are
her husband of 53 years, Bill Lutz of Princeton; 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, David Lutz, Princeton and John
and Tina Lutz, Princeton; 2 sisters, Angeline Fithian, Texas, and Martha Jane Wright, Princeton; 4 grandchildren,
Lauri Lutz, Neal Lutz, Justin Lutz, Rachel Carver and her husband, Danny; 2 great-grandchildren, Shantel Lutz
and Kayden Carver; 4 nephews and 2 nieces; and a former daughter-in-law and friend, Brends Carrigan,
Evansville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Elizabeth (Strigle) Arvin. Memorial services
10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiate will be Father Bernie Etienne, burial
in St. Joseph Cemetery in Princeton. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, March
22. Colvin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph

Gibson County recorder and county clerk. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church and a 1947 graduate
of Mackey High School. He was a member of Prince Masonic Lodge 231, Eagles, and Haubstadt Chamber of
Commerce. Surviving are his wife; Norma Jean; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Wagner of Champaign, Ill., and
Connie Jo Gardner of Somerville; three sons, Steven of Augusta, Ga., Richard of Crawsfordsville and Roger of

Dr. Robert M. Lutz, 78, a resident of Sandia Park and a resident of the Albuquerque area since 1958, died
Tuesday, January 15, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Kelly Lutz and wife, Chris of Albuquerque;
daughter, Karen Nennecker of Coeur d' Alene, ID; grandsons, Ryan and Kyle; granddaughters, Lauren and
Madison; and brother, Donald Lutz and wife, Joni. Bob was born and raised in Evansville, IN before serving his
country in the Air Force as a fighter pilot in the Korean War during which he was awarded the Distinguished
Flying Cross.
Following his military service, Bob went to dental school and in 1960 he began his orthodontist practice in
Albuquerque from which he retired in 1996. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held on
