We are happy to welcome you to the Cultural Exchange 2012 that will be held in Zagreb
during the beginning of November2012.
This guide was designed to provide you, dear guest, with necessary information to help
planning and preparing for your trip to Zagreb. It does not contain information about the
schedule (as it is found elsewhere), rather it focuses on handy information such as arrival
instructions, accepted currency and a few local words and sayings. :)

1. Arrival, Stay and Departure
1.1 How to reach Zagreb, Croatia
 By airplane
There are numerous connecting flights available from Valladolid and Sankt Petersburg to
Zagreb. Its main airport, Pleso, it is located 17 km from the center of the city. There are
regular connecting bus lines that go to the main bus station (Autobusni kolodvor). The price
for a one way ticket is 30 kn (~7 euros).

In case you end up in other Croatian airports such as Pula, Rijeka, Dubrovnik, you can travel
by bus to Zagreb.
 By bus
We do not recommend going to Croatia by bus, it takes a long time. :) But, in case you come
by bus, you will end up at the main bus station (Autobusni kolodvor) in Marin Držic Avenue.
From there you can take a direct tram line (line 6, Črnomerec) to the center of the city.

The main railway station (Glavni kolodvor) is located on King Tomislav's square, only a 10
minute walk from the city center.
1.2 Public transport in Zagreb
 Buses
They usually drive from 6h until around midnight. One way ticket (valid for 90 minutes)
bought outside the vehicle costs 12 kn or 15kn if bought inside. A daily ticked costs 40kn, a
three day ticket 100kn and a seven day pass costs 200kn.

Trams
The main difference is that they drive during the night. Prices are the same as for buses.

1.3 Accommodations
The accommodation will be arranged in a student dorm "Stjepan Radić"(address: Jarunska
2), popularly known as "Sava" (because of the vicinity with Sava river ). It consists of 11
pavilions and is located only 15 minutes from the center. You will be notified later as to
where exactly you will be staying.
For now rest assured that there will be wardrobes, beds (with sheets) and a table in each
room. Toilets and showers cabins are shared, but be sure to bring your own towels.
Laundry services are available in the dormitory complex, but we recommend taking more
clothes rather then too few. Down sides: there is no internet access and there are no
fridges.
Below are instructions how to get there. Exit station is "Studentski dom Stjepan Radić".
1. If you're going from the city center (Ban Josip Jelačić square) take direct tram lines 17
(Prečko) or 14 (Zapruđe).

2. If you're going from the main railway station (Glavni kolodvor) or King Tomislav square
(Trg kralja
Tomislava) the only direct tram line is 4 (Savski most).
3. If you're going from the main bus station (Autobusni kolodvor) take direct tram lines 5
(Prečko) or 7 (Savski most).
Line 5 passes by our BEST office (located at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and
Computing), tram stop "Sveučilišna aleja".
1.4 Food and drinks
Meals will be served in student's canteens, at least one hot meal per day. We will provide
Croatian student ID cards needed for purchasing meals. Please let us know if you have any
allergies or are a special diet. We'll try to suit your needs.
If you want to buy meals yourself they will be around 30-40 kn (cca 5 euros). There are a lot
of bakeries, sandwich and kebab shops in the vicinity of the dorms, just take a 5 minute walk
to the tram and bus stop "Savski most".
Tap water is of good quality and drinkable throughout the whole of Croatia. No need to buy
bottled water.
Alcohol is sold in regular stores, but have your ID card with you! Sometimes they check your
age (consider it a compliment to your looks).

2.1 Croatia
Located in southeast Europe, also known as "The land of a thousand islands" (1 185 to be
exact). It holds a population of 4,3 million people spread over 56, 5 thousand square

kilometers. The capital, Zagreb, is also the economic, traffic, cultural and academic center
and the largest city with almost 800 thousand inhabitants. The official language is Croatian.
As for foreign languages Croats are mostly familiar with English, German and sometimes
Italian. The current time zone offset is GMT +1.
Croatia became an independent democratic parliamentary republic in 1991. The current
president is Ivo Josipović.
2.2Currency and prices
The Croatian currency is "Kuna" (literal translation marten) which is divided into 100 "Lipa" (
literal meaning linden). There are a lot of exchange booths in town, as well as ATMs. Check
with your bank provision rates for transactions.

Euros are usually not accepted as a means of payment. Cafés and smaller stores don't accept
credit cards very often so it's recommended to carry smaller amounts of cash with you.
Compared to EU countries we have somewhat cheaper fruits and vegetables (and, of course,
booze), but milk and bread are pretty much the same. Zagreb is a little bit more expensive
than the rest of Croatian cities and towns, except the ones on the coast.

2.3 Weather
Because of its unique position, Croatia has three different climates. The Mediterranean
climates predominates on the coast, with an almost subtropical climate in Dubrovnik. The
coldest regions are Gorski Kotar and Lika with a snow forest climate. The rest of the country
(including Zagreb) has a continental climate.
Average temperatures in Zagreb during summer are around 20°C and during winter around
1°C.

We have two main mobile operators Vip (Vodafone partner) and T-mobile. Check with your
operator about roaming prices. If you would like a local operator (with a pre-paid SIM card)
check out offers from Vip, T-mobile, Tele2, Tomato, Bon bon, Multiplus or ask us. We might
have a spare SIM card :)

You can find free hotspots in bars, restaurants, shopping centers. Sometimes it can be
password protected, but as a guest, fell free to ask the staff for access. If you prefer internet
cafés, 1 hours costs 10-20 kn.
In case of emergency there is internet access from the BEST office.
2.5 How to recognize a Croatian
As you get to know us better, see how many of the following statements are true. You will
get a full list during the event, don't worry. ;)
1. The use of vulgar language at home is unacceptable, unless it is Croatian
2. Ladles are not only used for stirring when cooking... they are also used by your Mother to
beat you when there is no "šiba" handy
3. Lunch on Sundays have more courses than Americans have for Christmas or Thanksgiving

4. You have 17 consonants in your name and only 2 vowels
5. Most common jokes feature Bosnians (Mujo and Haso) or Slovenians. For example:
Slovenia is so small you can go carting around it. :)

It is possible to get discounts with it, mostly in cultural places (museums, theaters).

Personal medication and hygiene accessories
Let us know if you have any allergies or health problems. We have a typical array of pills
(Aspirin, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen), but better to bring your own. In case you forget
toothbrushes, toothpaste... etc, fear not- stores are always open :)

4. Language basics
4.1 Pronunciation
Croatian vocabulary is phonetic- read it as it is written. But we do have some funny letters.
Č and Ć are pronounced like ch as in CHarming. Č is a more "harder" sound then Ć.
Dž and Đ are pronounced like j as in Jeep, but Đž is more "harder".
Š is pronounced like sh as in SHeep (and you thought we were going to write something
rude).
Ž is pronounces like s as in meaSure.
Lj and Nj have no English equivalents so we will gladly demonstrate then in person :D
