All men when part of a mob brave and tough appear, but when two men are left alone, one shivers with fear From “The Voice of the People” by Dr. Stylianos V. Spyridakis OCTOBER 2011 | KPHTH 3 .:President’s Message:. Days we should never forget... My fellow Cretans, This time of the year holds much significance to Cretans around the world, and particularly to those in our organization. Every year we celebrate and remember the holocaust of the Arkadi Monastery and the active role it played in the Cretan resistance of Ottoman rule during the Cretan revolt in 1866. When 2000 Turkish soldiers attacked the building, rather than surrender, the Cretans set alight a store of gunpowder. When the smoke cleared, 864 Cretan men, women and children lay dead, along with 1500 Turks. The Turks took 114 prisoners whom they immediately put to death. Only 3 rebels managed to escape to tell the tale. Arkadi remains a symbol of Cretan defiance against those who want to subdue them. Our organization honors those heroes and all the others that fought for the freedom of Crete and Greece from the Ottoman rule. We hold memorials at churches, our youth dress in ethnic attire, and we have events at our clubs and gathering places to commemorate the events that took place at Arkadi. We share the story of the abbot at the Arkadi Monastery and the decision he made to light the gunpowder. We explain to our youth what their ancestors stood for, what these people sacrificed their lives for, and what the Cretan spirit meant and, in many ways, still means today. October 28 commemorates the 71st anniversary when former Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas said “OXI” to an ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini to allow Italian forces to occupy strategic locations in Greece. When the Prime Minister replied with a single laconic word “OXI,” Greece was drawn into World War II. Greece’s brave and adamant stance to Mussolini’s ultimatum echoed throughout the world and gave much needed support to Britain and the forces of freedom. Later, in 1941, Crete would play a vital role to the beginning of the downfall of Hitler’s reign. October also marks the anniversary of our great organization. On October 14, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, representatives from eight Cretan Clubs across the country met and officially created the Pancretan Association of America. Now, 4 KPHTH | OCTOBER 2011 82 years later, we have over eighty chapters and continue to develop programs designed to support our members and make them aware of our rich history, our culture and traditions to keep the Cretan spirit alive for many future generations to come. As parents, we are responsible for educating our children about the values held by our ancestors and the moral code they lived by. In words and deeds, we must keep alive the Cretan spirit by standing up for what is right and just and by respecting our family, our church, and our fellow man. I have witnessed our children look to sports figures, movie stars, and other superficial symbols as their role models. It is incumbent on us, as parents, to teach them about the Cretan heroes of our past so they can model themselves after those who embodied the Cretan character and values. After attending many events sponsored by other Greek organizations, none come close to those of the PAA. The success of our events is primarily due to the involvement and participation of our youth. I have been approached by the leaders of these “non-Cretan” groups asking, “How do you do it? How do you bring the youth in? What can we do to bring our youth in?” My friends, let me tell you, it is not easy, but it goes back to what I said above: it begins from our commitment as parents to pass on these Cretan values to the next generation. In this issue, we showcase some of our PYA youth and future PAA leaders. I am proud to have them as a part of our organization. The PYA was founded in 1949, and ever since its inception, it continues to grow. In addition to the dozens of young members that belong to adult and women’s chapters across the country, today we have 18 dedicated Youth chapters with over 477 members nationwide. Congratulations to newly elected PYA President Chris V. Marangoudaki and his Board. I pledge to them that the PAA will continue to support them in every way possible. They, and the members they represent, are the next generation of Cretans and the future PAA. Through them, the story of the Arkadi and the history of brave Cretans and their quest for freedom will be told to yet another generation. The defiant defense of this fortresslike monastery during the 1866 Cretan rebellion against the Turks is still legendary and inspirational. By the mid-1800, the Turks had occupied Crete for more than two centuries, despite frequent bloody uprisings by Cretan rebels determined to win independence and union with Greece. Then came the revolution of 1866, instigated by a 16-member revolutionary committee. Arkadi Monastery became the rebels’ headquarters, owing to its central position on the island and strategic location atop a craggy inland gorge. When the Turkish Pasha in Rethymnon learned of the rebels operating out of the monastery, he sent an ultimatum to Arkadi’s Abbot Gabriel Marinakis: either expel the revolutionary committee or the monastery would be destroyed. But Abbot Gabriel was himself acting as chairman of the committee. He refused the Pasha’s demand. The rebels began preparing the monastery for the anticipated Turkish attack. At dawn on November 8, 1866, the Arkadi defenders awoke to find the monastery surrounded by 15,000 Turkish soldiers armed with 30 cannons. The monastery walls were manned by only 259 armed men, including 45 monks and .:Cover Story Εξώφυλλο:. 12 of the 16 revolutionary committee members. There were also almost 700 unarmed women and children from nearby villages seeking refuge from the encroaching Turks. The Turkish commander’s demand for surrender was answered by gunfire. The battle was on. Turkish troops stormed the monastery gate in waves, and hundreds were killed by heavy fire from the defenders and from seven Cretan snipers who had barricaded themselves in a windmill outside the walls. As night fell on the first day of the battle, the fields around the monastery were heaped with Turkish corpses. The snipers had died one by one. But still the gate and walls held. In the dark of the first night, the two Cretan rebels dressed as Turks were lowered by a rope from a window to slip through enemy lines and seek reinforcements from a nearby town. When it was learned that no help was coming, one of the rebels crept back through Turkish ranks to return to Arkadi. The second day of battle broke with a bang, as the Turks opened fire with two heavy artillery guns they had dragged up the gorge from Rethymnon during the night. As the walls and gate smashed and crumbled under the incessant pounding of the shells, Abbot Gabriel gathered the defenders into the Arkadi Chapel to receive the last sacrament. The Abbot urged them to die bravely for their cause and then went up to the walls to do so himself. Aware that the Pasha had ordered him to be taken alive, Abbot Gabriel showed himself on an unprotected terrace and opened fire on the Turks. At first the Turks obeyed orders and did not shoot back. But at last the big Abbot, standing in clear view in his black flowing robes, blazing away at anything that moved, made too inviting a target for one Turkish soldier. A bullet caught Abbot Gabriel just above the navel and he fell dead - but not before he had given his blessing to a desperate plan hatched by an imposing rebel fighter named Constantine Giaboudakis. What the refugees at Arkadi feared more than death was to fall into the hands of the Turks. So when Constantine Giaboudakis presented his plan to the defenders, it was unanimously approved. By the afternoon of the second day, the Turkish heavy artillery had pulverized the outer walls. The defenders killed hundreds more invaders, but the end was clearly near - ammunition was running low and the gate was almost breached. As darkness fell, the Turks launched a massive final assault by pouring through the gate into the inner courtyard where the rebels fought them hand to hand. Meanwhile, Giaboudakis was preparing to carry out his plan. He led more than 600 women and children into the monastery’s gunpowder storage room where they said their prayers and waited until hundreds of Turks were swarming over the roof and ramming away at the bolted door. As the door splintered, Giaboudakis put a spark to a gunpowder keg. The massive explosion killed all the refugees, along with several hundred Turkish soldiers. When the smoke cleared, 864 Cretan men, women and children lay dead, along with 1500 Turks. The Turks took 114 prisoners whom they immediately put to death. Only 3 rebels managed to escape to tell the tale. News of the slaughter at Arkadi Monastery, with the heavy loss of women, children and clergymen shocked the rest of Europe and won much support for the Cretan rebels’ cause. In 1898, with help from Greece and the Great Powers (England, France, Italy and Russia), Crete won its independence and the Turks withdrew from the island, which they had held since 1669. Then in 1913, the long-fought-for goal was achieved and Crete was united with Greece. 1=Requires purchase of additional dish antenna. 2= Available at no cost to all DISH Network customers. Thank you PAA ARCHIVES COMMITTEE Day October 28 1940 BY ANTHONY BALAMONTES In the early morning hours of October 28, 1940, Italian Ambassador Emmanuel Grazzi awoke Greek Premier Ioannis Metaxas and presented him an ultimatum. Metaxas rejected the ultimatum and Italian forces invaded Greek territory from Italian-occupied Albania less than three hours later. (The anniversary of Metaxas’s refusal is now a public holiday in Greece.) Mussolini launched the invasion partly to prove that Italians could match the military successes of the German Army and partly because Mussolini regarded southeastern Europe as lying within Italy’s sphere of influence. The Greek army proved to be a more able opponent than Mussolini or his generals thought and successfully exploited the mountainous terrain of Epirus. The Greek forces counterattacked and forced the Italians to retreat. By mid-December, the Greeks had occupied nearly one-quarter of Albania, before Italian reinforcements and the harsh winter stemmed the Greek advance. In March 1941, a major Italian counterattack partially failed and the Italian troops only reoccupied small areas around Himare and Grabova. The initial Greek defeat of the Italian invasion is considered the first Allied land victory of the Second World War, even if in the event the campaign, thanks mainly to the German intervention, resulted in a victory for the Axis. Fifteen of the twenty-one Greek divisions were deployed against the Italians, so only six divisions were facing the attack from German troops in the Metaxas Line (near the border between Greece and Yugoslavia/Bulgaria) during the first days of April. In those days, Greece received help from British Commonwealth troops, moved from Libya by orders of Churchill. On April 6, 1941, Nazi Germany came to the aid of Italy and invaded Greece through Bulgaria and Yugoslav Macedonia. Greek and British Commonwealth troops fought back but were overwhelmed. On April 20, after Greek resistance in the north had ceased, the Bulgarian Army entered Greek Thrace, with the goal of regaining its Aegean Sea outlet in Western Thrace and Eastern Macedonia. The Bulgarians occupied territory between the Strymon River and a line of demarcation running through Alexandroupoli and Svilengrad west of the Evros river. The Greek capital Athens fell on April 27, and by June 1, after the capture of Crete, all of Greece was under Axis occupation. The Triple Occupation The occupation of Greece was divided between Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria. German forces occupied some strategically important areas, namely Athens, Thessaloniki with Central Macedonia, and several Aegean islands, including most of Crete. Northeastern Greece (Eastern Macedonia and Western Thrace with the exception of the Evros prefecture) came under Bulgarian occupation and was annexed to Bulgaria, which had long claimed these territories. The remaining two-thirds of Greece was occupied by Italy, with the Ionian islands directly administered as Italian territories. After the Italian capitulation in September 1943, the Italian zone was taken over by the Germans, often accompanied by violence towards the Italian garrisons. There was a failed attempt by the British to take advantage of the Italian surrender to reenter the Aegean, resulting in the Battle of Leros. For Greece, the strength of the Axis occupation forces always owed more to the threat of invasion from the Allies than to active resistance. Nazi atrocities Increasing attacks by partisans in the latter years of the Occupation resulted in a number of executions and wholesale slaughter of civilians in reprisal. The most famous examples are those of the village of Kommeno (August 16, 1943) by 1.Gebirgs-Division, where 317 inhabitants were murdered and the village torched, the “Massacre of Kalavryta” (December 13, 1943), in which Wehrmacht troops of the 117th Jäger Division carried out the extermination of the entire male population OCTOBER 2011 | KPHTH 10 .:World War II and the subsequent total destruction of the town, and the “Massacre of Distomo” (June 10, 1944), where an SS Police unit looted and burned the village of Distomo in Boeotia, resulting in the deaths of 218 civilians. At the same time, in the course of the concerted anti-guerrilla campaign, hundreds of villages were systematically torched and almost one million Greeks left homeless. Two other notable but almost unknown acts of brutality were the massacres of Italian troops at the islands of Cephallonia and Kos in September 1943 during the German takeover of the Italian occupation areas. In Cephallonia, the 12,000-strong Italian ‘Acqui’ Division was attacked on September 13 by elements of 1.Gebirgs-Division with support from Stukas and forced to surrender on September 21, after suffering some 1,300 casualties. The next day, the Germans began executing their prisoners and did not stop until over 4,500 Italians had been shot. Four thousand survivors were put aboard ships for the mainland, but some of them sunk after hitting mines in the Ionian Sea, where another 3,000 were lost. The Cephallonia massacre serves as the background for the novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Collaboration General Georgios Tsolakoglou, who had signed the armistice treaty with the Wehrmacht, was appointed as chief of a new Nazi puppet collaborationist regime in Athens. He was succeeded as Prime Minister of Greece by two other prominent Greek collaborators: Konstantinos Logothetopoulos first, and Ioannis Rallis second. The latter was responsible for the creation of the Greek collaborationist Security Battalions. As in other European countries, there were Greeks eager to collaborate with the occupying force. Some did so because they shared the National Socialist ideology (for instance members of ultra-nationalist political factions and parties), others because of extreme anti-Communism, and others because of opportunistic advancement. The Germans were also eager to find support from the Δεύτερος Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος:. ideologically-similar Greeks, and helped Greek fascist organizations such as the infamous EEE (Ethniki Enosis Ellas), the EKK (Ethnikon Kyriarchon Kratos), the Greek National Socialist Party (Elliniko Ethnikososialistiko Komma, EEK) led by George S. Mercouris and other minor pro-Nazi, fascist or anti-Semitic organizations such as the ESPO (Hellenic Socialist Patriotic Organization) or the Sidira Eirini (“Iron Peace”). In Nazi ideology, the Greeks were regarded as a German-friendly nation and were above Slavs in their racial scale. Adolf Hitler personally admired the ancient Greek civilization, the Spartan model and Hellenic classicism, which inspired many building and artistic endeavours in Nazi Germany. Hitler had no plans to occupy Greece either, and also resisted Italy’s plans to invade Greece, which in the end were for this reason enacted without Benito Mussolini consulting Hitler. Also the fact that Greece in the 1930s had a fascist regime lead by the germanophile Ioannis Metaxas placed Greece on Hitler’s list of potentially friendly nations. Furthermore, the Italians’ failure to conquer Greece after their October 28, 1940 ultimatum and attack gained the Greeks the respect of Germany. For this reason Hitler ordered the Wehrmacht not to take Greek prisoners during the invasion and the consequent collapse of the front. Resistance However, most Greeks did not cooperate with the Nazis and chose either the path of passive acceptance or active resistance. Active Greek resistance started immediately as many Greeks fled to the hills, where a partisan movement was born. One of the most touching episodes of the early resistance took place just after the Wehrmacht reached the Acropolis on April 27. The Germans ordered the flag guard, Evzone Konstandinos Koukidis, to retire the Greek flag. The Greek soldier obeyed, but when he was done, he wrapped himself in the flag and threw himself off of the plateau where he met death. Some days later, when the Swastika banner was waving on the Acropolis’ uppermost spot, two patriot- ic Athenian youngsters, Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas climbed by night on the Acropolis and tore down the flag. It was one of the first actions of Greek resistance and among the first in Europe, and therefore inspired not only Greeks but also other Europeans under German domination. The greatest source of partisan activity were the Communist-backed guerrilla forces, the National Liberation Front (EAM), and its military wing, the National People’s Liberation Army (ELAS), which carried out operations of sabotage and guerrilla attacks against the Wehrmacht with notable success. Other resistance groups included a right-wing partisan organization, the National Republican Greek League (EDES), led by a former army officer, Colonel Napoleon Zervas a well-known Republican, and the National and Social Liberation (EKKA), led by Colonel Dimitrios Psarros, a Royalist. These groups were formed from remnants of the Hellenic Army and the conservative factions of Greek society. Starting in 1943, on a number of cases EDES and ELAS fought each other in a sort of prelude to the civil war that sprang up after the German departure in 1944. EAM alleged that EDES was aided by the German occupying forces and by the Nazi-supported puppet regimes of Tsolakoglou, Logothetopoulos and Rallis. This situation led to triangular battles among ELAS, EDES and the Germans. At the same time, ELAS attacked and destroyed Psarros’ military formation, the “5/42 Evzones Regiment”. When Italy surrendered to the Allies in the fall of 1943, German forces actively hunted down and, in some cases executed, the Italian soldiers and simultaneously began serious attacks on EDES. There is evidence that Zervas then struck a deal with the German army. The right-wing partisans and Germans agreed not to attack each other. This truce left the Germans free of sabotage in some areas and allowed EDES to suppress local Communist rivals. The EDES-German truce ended in 1944, when the Germans began evacuating Greece and the British agents in Greece negotiated a ceasefire (the Plaka agreement). Your Cretan Alumni Network Committee: Mike Detorakis, Diane Kounalakis, Michael Kastrenakis, Stacy Marakis, Andy Boutsikakis, Mike Detorakis, George Zoumberakis (not pictured) Reuniting, Reconnecting! Cretan Alumni Network By Diane Kounalakis Where has the time gone? Seems like yesterday we were all sharing a disco dance at the Pancretan Convention Cretan Alumni Network Reunion Party of the Decades! Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated committee, we had an extremely successful reunion event. We danced, we laughed (a lot), we looked at amazing old photographs (man, the 70s were really a fashion disaster). And let’s not even talk about the hairstyles back then. (Well, the guys really did like the HAIR). Okay, but I digress. The reunion brought together Cretans from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and today! It was wonderful to watch an amazing slide show put together by former Snoopaki George Panos. (Actually, I think he’ll always be known as Snoopaki.) Then Michael Kaz brought out a video no one had really seen from the Clearwater $99 Cretan Youth Cruise of 1989! It was one great memory after another! We saw our friends from West Palm Beach, Orlando, Springfield, Chicago, Detroit, Salt Lake City, Clearwater, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Akron and so many more places I can’t even begin to list them all. But the fun didn’t stop there. On Tuesday night, we held a wine tasting/Cretan alumni meeting, and we had over 50 people attend to hear about our project. The committee presented a PowerPoint presentation that outlined the plans of the Cretan Alumni Network. Our main focus is finding all of you and reconnecting one another into the PAA and providing an opportunity for social and professional networking. It’s a great chance to come back to the PAA and to participate in the many philanthropic and cultural projects with your friends from coast to coast (or we should say worldwide). Following our meeting, we all attended the Margaritaville Night, chaired by our own Terry Zervos! During the evening, OCTOBER 2011 | KPHTH 12 we presented a slide show that took us once again down memory lane with lots of laughter and fun! So as you can imagine, we had an amazing time in Clearwater and we can’t thank the Clearwater organizing committee enough. Special thanks to Mia and James Boutzoukas, Violet Kokolakis, Michael Kastrenakes, Michael Boutzoukas and their entire chapter for organizing yet again one of the most memorable conventions in recent history. And yes, James, Mia, Violet, Michael, Michael and their spouses (amongst others) are active participants in CAN and we thank them for that too! Now if you’re wondering, what next? We have the answer to that. In the next months, you’ll be receiving a survey from the Cretan Alumni Network that we hope you’ll take a few moments to fill out. It will give us a better idea of the type of reunion programs you would like to see next, both at the conventions and throughout the year as well. We’d also like to set up a professional network and we need your help, so more information on that will follow too. We already have a Facebook page entitled Cretan Alumni Network. If you’re on Facebook, please join our page (and you can like us too). More networking opportunities are also being pursued. More importantly, if you haven’t sent us your email yet, please do so today. As we mentioned in our PowerPoint presentation, pick up your iPhone or Blackberry right now and just send us an email at can@pancretan. org and we’ll sign you up right away. It’s that easy and then you won’t miss out on any future events or communication from us. Thanks again to everyone who attended our 1st Cretan Alumni Network Reunion. We plan to host a lot more of these! The photos below just give you a peek at the fun. To see a lot more photos, go to our Facebook page and check us out. Next time, you’ll have to be IN the pictures!! Here’s to great success and reconnecting!!! .:Special Report Ρεπορτάζ:. One of those passengers was the first recorded Cretan named Demetrios Fundulakis, he recorded himself as “of the Greek church” in the 1783 census. As America became a nation, the Cretan community formed an American identity. In 1916 the first Cretan fraternal organization was founded, the Chicago and Suburbs Fraternity, Dr. loannis Volikos was its first President. The “Minos” Chapter of Salt Lake City, UT was founded a year later in 1917 and in 1918 the New York chapter of “Omonoia”, the Greek word for unity. Soon after followed the chapters of Boston, Chicopee, and Cleveland as others followed. In 1928, the Chicago presidency was assumed by Demetrios Betinis, a visionary, conceived the idea to form an association of all American Cretan organizations, an concept which was welcomed with enthusiasm by most of the Cretans. The seed for the formation of the Pan Cretan Association was planted. A major role in this whole effort was played by Archimandrite Erineos Tsourounakis, Nicholas Kalimerakis, and Emmanuel Kafatos and the effort took hold when with the leadership of “Omonoia” of New York, “Arkadi “ of Pittsburgh, and “Epimenidis” of San 14 KPHTH | OCTOBER 2011 Σύμφωνα με επίσημες καταγράφες, οι επιβάτες που έφειγαν απο το Μάχον, Μινόρκα της Ισπανίας κατάφεραν να φτάσουν στην Φλόριδα στις 26 Ιουνίου, 1768. Francisco held a special general assembly meeting on April 7th 1929 in New York City. At this meeting it was resolved to proceed with endeavor to create a “PANCRETAN UNION” of Cretan chapters in America. Representatives from “Arkadi” and “Epimenidis” agreed to the appointment of a committee consisting of the “Omonoia” officers Emmanuel Kafatos, Vladimiros Constantinides, and Dimitrios Theodorakis. Inviting the Cretan clubs of the time they convened to form such a union at the first official Cretan Convention in Chicago on October 14, 1929. The first PAA President elected was Vladimiros Constantinides from Omonoia of NYC – he is respected as the great unifier, our modern day Cretan hero. Also at this convention, by unanimous vote, Eleftherios K. Venizelos, then Prime Minister of Greece, was nominated by the delegates as the Honorary President of the Association. After the first convention the PAA continued to progress as other chapters joined and were created. It’s important to remember that there were and are, many Cretans throughout the years who worked tirelessly, even in circumstances of adversity, but in the spirit of unity for the progress of all the Cretans in America. We are happy to enclose in this issue, to you our extended Cretan family member, your PAA birthday gift, a DVD regarding the heroic Holocaust of Arkadi, a sacred event specifically recognized in the PAA constitution. This DVD gift is an opportunity to share our history, and as a chapter following the trisagion in memory of the martyrs of Arkadi also pray for the repose of the souls of the departed selfless founders of the PAA, individuals who had the foresight and courage to work together even if they faced adversity, for the greater good of Crete and Cretans. Pancretan Youth of America President Παγκρητική Νεολαία Αμερικής Του Νίκου Κατσανεβάκη By Νikos Katsanevakis Tell us about your family. Forty years ago when my father Vasili Marangoudakis was 13, he migrated to America from Greece. While living in New York, he met my mother, Athena Tsagakis, who is a first generation Cretan/American, and they got married in 1985. I was born in 1988 followed by my brother Niko in 1991, and we have been living in New York ever since. My father is the youngest of three brothers, and my mother is the fourth sibling of five. All of my family, especially my parents and grandparents, have taught me most of what I know today about what it means to be Cretan. Chris V. Marangoudakis What is your relationship with the Cretan community? I have been a part of the Cretan sillogo ‘OMONOIA’ in Astoria, NY, ever since I could remember. I grew up with the sillogo being a part of me, as I attended dance practices every Friday. Afterward, I would hang out with all the kids my age helping me grow close to them and establish the relationships that I still have to this day. I have attended multiple conferences and conventions and have always participated in dance groups, whether it was to dance or to teach, or sometimes even both. Why did you decide to be involved with PYA? I started attending youth conferences from the age of 15, and I have tried to attend every one since then, being that they are always a great experience. Once I became more involved with our local chapter ‘LABRYS’, I realized how much I enjoyed being a part of the youth and helping the youth stay strong, connected, and well cultured. This led me to take part on the PYA board by becoming the cultural chair from 2009-2011. As the convention approached, I decided to run for the 2011-2013 term as PYA president. It has always been one of my goals to be in this position, and I am humbled by the trust given by my fellow PYA members. What do you think it will take from the PYA to attract more youth? Every term, attracting more youth seems to be one of the main goals for the elected board, as it should be. In my eyes, there can never be enough youth. The concern is that there IS plenty of youth, but not enough active members. What we need to do is find a way to attract these inactive members and be able to host events that will keep everyone involved. Our board has come up with a preliminary idea to attract members by holding a nationwide membership drive. This is just one of the ways that we will try to start getting more people involved and reactivate members that have not been involved. What is your goal as the new PYA president? As stated in the previous answer, increasing membership and reactivating non-active members is one of my biggest goals. Each PYA board member has also set 2-3 goals for themselves to achieve within their term, bringing me to my next goal as President--to achieve all of these goals set together as a board and for them to be accomplished successfully and on time. How do you plan to achieve these goals? Having good communication with my board members, chapter presidents, and with the PAA is an important part Η καλή επικοινωνία μέσα σε μια ομάδα είναι το κλειδί για κάθε σχέδιο ή πρόγραμμα, και εφόσον όλοι είναι OCTOBER 2011 | KPHTH 17 .:Interview Συνέντευξη:. in achieving these goals. Good communication within a team is the key to any project or plan, and as long everyone is on the same page throughout the term, anything can be accomplished. What are your expectations from PAA? I expect the PAA to support us just as they always have, that they continue to be openminded to our ideas and are there for us whenever we need them. They are always supportive and give us positive feedback on our questions and decisions, and I am sure they will continue to do the same. What would you expect from PYA members? I would like for PYA members to continue being active locally and on a nationwide level. Attending dances, meetings, and any other type of events within your area will help the strength of your chapter. Attending conferences and conventions and being active on a nationwide level is also something that I would like to see out of our members. It is important that all chapter presidents participate on all conference calls or have a representative present. We must keep everyone communicating and on the same page. Do you have plans for improving the current situation of PYA? The PYA was left in great standing with many chapters being active and a wide variety of participation from all over the U.S, although there is still room for improvement. It would be such an implementation to see ALL youth chapters active and even starting new chapters where there is Cretan youth with no sillogo close by. PYA growth is an important portion of our board’s goals for our term, including membership, involvement, and contribution. Give us a message that you would like to pass on to the Cretans in the US. The PYA is assorted with youth from many different parts of the country. Many people are either first, second, third, fourth, fifth generations and sometimes higher. Some people are from Hania, Rethymno, Irakleo, or Lassithi, but what it comes down to is that we all come from the same KPHTH, and the PYA and PAA is what keeps us together. The PYA is like a bridge to our homeland. Year in and year out, the PYA continues to give us a taste of where we came from and reminds us of who we are. This is why we all need to do our best to keep our traditions alive and always remember where we, our parents, and grandparents came from. When we meet ‘others’, their way of thinking pollinates ours. Our own identity meets theirs. More specifically, this project has a twofold axis: the mountainous regions of Crete need help from the scientific community in order to develop, while academia needs to step out of its ivory tower and approach the people of the land. Mountains’ University is where these two needs converge”. This is what professor Ioannis Pallikaris (the ‘father’ of Lasik, a laser-based method for vision correction, which revolutionized scientific standards worldwide), Rector of the University of Crete, and one of the brains behind this initiative, said, putting in a nutshell the concept of this lifetime’s goal of a group of Greek and foreign academics, intellectuals, students, businessmen and other individuals who have an abiding love for Crete (“one of the precious few places in the world that generates more history than it can consume”). That is why classes at Mountains’ University do not take place in amphitheatres but at traditional village coffeeshops, in monastery courtyards, and just about anywhere else where academics and volunteers get an opportunity to meet with the locals and share learning and points of view on equal terms about various subjects that range from scientific practice to how traditional music instruments are made – in fact, the same way as Homer’s time. At this university, teachers become students, as the hard-working folk of the earth share their skills and traditional knowledge, providing stimulus for new scientific knowledge and innovation. As a matter of fact, stresses Prof. Pallikaris, “Mountains’ University aims to break the vicious circle of social exclusion by helping the people of these mountainous areas to integrate in a sound way without being forced to give up their values, for it is exactly these values that have always made a difference, turning Cretans into pioneers since Minoan times”. The first results Putting this theory into practice proved quite challenging but very promising too; people from the marginalized mountainous regions of Crete and nearby islands responded enthusiastically to the call of Mountains’ University. Initiative groups of academics, doctors, pre- and postgraduate students and others started visiting and examining large numbers of locals (mostly the elderly and children) on a very regular basis, gathering data about local communities, health, education and the environment, and, more importantly, conveying a message of optimism and hope through progress and science. At this initial level it is to be expected that Mountains University focuses mostly on social matters and how the mountain inhabitants can be guaranteed decent standards of living, while maintaining their solidarity and justice in their everyday interactions. .:Our Crete H Κρήτη μας:. As Prof. Pallikaris says, “Crete produces an over-abundance of what ‘technocrats’ call ‘best-selling cultural products’. Our land is one of the few places in the world where simple ordinary folk improvise ditties and songs with unprecedented skill over a glass of wine. They dance ancient dances in a way that has nothing to do with the ephemeral, and they spin yarns and myths that would be the envy of many a novelist or historian. Even the most basic Cretan dish, a roast from Mylopotamos or a cheese ‘kallitsouni’ from Lassithi, put time in perspective. Because my fellowcountrymen find it all too easy to take offence, I should add the ‘tsigariasto’ from Sfakia and lots of other delicacies from around the island. The crux of all the projects undertaken by Mountains’ University is to create a brand new sustainable model of looking at prog- In spite of the few years it has been in operation, Mountains’ University has already caused a sensation, and several visionaries, idealists, or socially concerned individuals from all over the country (Karpathos, Kassos, Epirus, Western Macedonia, and Peloponnese) have asked to join. It is estimated that there are already more than 2,000 active members, with twice as many supporters and followers. Mountains’ University fields of activity include: a) joint classes for students from mountain schools and city school students (this is called ‘mutual teaching method’, or ‘interactive teaching’), an initiative that flies in the face of our country’s urbancentered educational model; it should be stressed that dropping out of school is a dire problem, and juvenile delinquency is punished rather than dealt with effectively; b) specialized mobile medical units which visit remote areas; c) promotion of small-scale economies, i.e. enhancing traditional economies with modern tools, such as the solar cheese-factory at Madara on the White Mountains (Sfakia). Furthermore, the Cultural Academy of Mountains has been founded, with four deanships: Chania (Selino), Rethymno (Mylopotamos), Heraklion (Viannos or Vorizia), and Lassithi (Oropedio). More deanships are being planned for other municipalities on Crete and other nearby islands, as well as in other Greek regions. These deanships serve as the main administration and coordination bodies of the Mountains’ University, and are in charge of setting up local thematic initiatives: The Shepherds’ Museum at Omalos, the Song and Narrative Institute at Mylopotamos, a Music Academy at Lassithi, Folk Architecture and Crafts at Sitia, reviving traditional agricultural methods, etc. OCTOBER 2011 | KPHTH 31 .:Traditions Έθιμα:. The Secrets of Cretan Raki Various wine festivities begin throughout Crete every autumn after the grape harvest. Raki or tsikoudia is a strong distilled spirit containing approximately 37% alcohol per volume and is produced from the must residue of the winepress. Outside of Crete it is called tsipouro. In Turkey raki was first produced from the residue of grapes left over from winemaking only. When a shortage of residue began, spirits from abroad were imported and processed with aniseed. During the Turkish occupation of Crete the name raki was given to the local tsikoudia, since there were some similarities. Now both names are used in Crete equally. The Turkish raki has a history going back 300 years. But it all started long before that. Famous coppersmiths from Armenia and the Pont, who made decorated distilling vessels, confirmed the deep knowledge of distillation in all the Byzantine Empire. History even goes further back. The dietary habits of the ancient Minoans and the Mycenaeans were apparently in conflict with the contemporary Mediterranean diet, according to research conducted by 32 KPHTH | OCTOBER 2011 scientists from Greece, Britain, Italy and the United States. Examination of organic residue on ancient pottery shows that the Minoan and Mycenaean diet was mainly based on meats and greens, while fish was on the bottom of their culinary preferences. In addition, tsikoudia was a favorite drink with their meals. Just a few years ago, ouzo, tsipouro, tsikoudia and the distillation of Corinthian currant were fortified as exclusive Greek products. The European Union protects the following unique spirits as being only original when coming from its original place: Cognac, Brandy de Jerez, Grappa di Barolo, Berliner Kummel, Genievre Flandres Artois, Scotch whiskey, Irish whiskey, Tsikoudia from Crete. The names of tsipouro, tsikoudia and ouzo are and have been mixed up often. Ouzo is being produced traditionally and exclusively in Greece. It belongs to the “anise” category and has an aniseed flavor (aniseed is what gives ouzo its trademark milky countenance when water is added). The indigenous mastic (masticha) of Chios Island, ginger, cinnamon and other aromatic seeds, plants and fruits are all part of the distillation process and give ouzo its distinctive taste. .:Traditions Έθιμα:. source: www.cretanbeaches.com www.HellasFM.us online radio show The Garden of Iapetos because everything has 2 sides... has 2 sides... because everything GO ONLINE EVERY Tuesday 8pm-10pm Friday 2pm-4pm LIVELINE 718.707.3120 www.HellasFM.us only on www.HellasFM.us E.:[email protected] OCTOBER 2011 | KPHTH 09.10.2056 The Garden of Iapetos Its main distinction from other similar drinks lies with the traditional method of its flavoring. As with many gastronomic delicacies, most alcoholic beverages have their roots in poverty. Tsipouro and tsikoudia are produced in poor viniculture soil. Therefore, every year after the vines are pruned, the vineyard provides wood for the fireplace, grape leaves for cooking (the famous Greek dolmades), grapes as a fruit or as a pastry and, of course, wine. Some of the grape must is used to make molasses, which when combined with flour become must jelly, must rolls, and other well-known Greek pastries. When must is made from grapes, the seeds, stems and grape peels aren’t thrown away; rather they are distilled to produce tsipouro and tsikoudia, spirits consumed for centuries in this part of the Mediterranean. Grape gathering, winemaking and tsikoudia making are activities enjoyed in the autumn every year. Winemaking involves crushing the grapes in special stone constructions called patitiria, or winepresses. This can be done by feet or with small machinery. The remains in the patitiria, after most of the grape juice has been removed, is allowed to ferment and is then distilled. Traditional distilleries consist of large copper boilers and include long copper funnels on top so that the steam can escape. The funnels, which pass through barrels placed on the sides of the distillation flask and are filled with cold water, end up on the outside of the barrels on top of empty glass containers. Herbage is first placed on the bottom of the boilers, which are then filled with stemfila and a little water or wine, hermetically sealed and finally placed onto the bonfires. The hot steam passes into the funnel, and as it then travels through the barrel of cold water, it condenses and liquidates. In approximately half an hour, the warm tsipouro begins to fall, drop-by-drop, on the other side of the funnel into the glass containers. The liquid that first comes out of the funnel cannot be consumed, but is used for pharmaceutical purposes. The final amount of distilled liquid contains the least amount of alcohol, whereas the actual tsikoudia is produced during the middle of the entire process. This lasts for about three hours, during which the owners of the boilers must test for alcohol content, increase or decrease the heat, and finally stop distillation when the tsikoudia has acquired the desired taste. It takes two to three distillation processes in copper caldrons for the production of the tsikoudia. The entire process becomes a celebration in which friends and relatives take part by bringing food and sampling the drink as it is being made. Each step in the distillation process has a particular ritual and the presence of friends is a must. In some areas of Crete, people make a variety of tsikoudia, called mournoraki. This is colored red and is distilled from mulberries. It is quite rare and even stronger then tsikoudia. To conclude, raki is claimed to be a medicine for many ordinary diseases, like a cold, a toothache or a headache. It is even used for massages. 33 Calendar of Events OCTOBER 2011 10/01/2011 Astoria, NY “MINOS” of NY Annual Dinner Dance Manolis Anastasakis 718-726-0991 10/07/2011 New Brunswick, NJ “White Mountains” Family Night Takis Psarakis 908-256-6813 10/08/2011 Dunlap, CA District 6 Leadership Conference Roxanne Koston 650-368-7891 10/21-23/2011 Kalamazoo, MI District 4 Annual Sportmans Hunt Trip John Marakis 586-707-7279 10/22/2011 Astoria, NY “OMONOIA” of NY Annual Dinner Dance Panagiotis Rodamis 917-299-7525 10/23/2011 Miami, FLCretan Assoc. of Miami Arkadi Memorial George Georgalakis 954-599-7212 10/25/2011 New Brunswick, NJ “White Mountains” Breast Cancer Awareness Maria Makropoulos 732-329-6254 NOVEMBER 2011 11/05/2011 Chicago, ILCretans Frat. of Chicago Annual Dance 11/05/2011 Kostas Chaniotakis 847-373-6123 New Brunswick, NJ “White Mountains” Annual “Pilafi” Dance Panagiotis Psarakis 908-685-2148 11/12/2011 11/12/2011 Toronto, Canada Astoria, NY “Knossos” Commemorating Arkadi “Pasiphae” 70th Anniversary Dinner Dance 11/12/2011 11/19/2011 Miami, FLCretan Assoc. of Miami Cretan Night Sacramento, CA “Zeus Cretagenis” Annual Dinner Dance George Georgalakis 954-599-7212 Pagona Stratoudakis 916-837-4109 11/19/2011 11/19/2011 Pittsburgh, PA Pittsburgh, PA PAA and PYA National Board Meetings “Arkadi-Maleme” Annual Dinner Dance Erasmia Novotny Helene Semanderes 248-807-0352 724-746-2878 11/26/2011 Cherry Hill, NJ “KNOSSOS” Annual Dinner Dance John Pratsinakis 609-458-4434 Michael Tsouroupakis 416-820-1255 Christina Diamantakis 516-767-2716 JANUARY 2012 01/5-8/2012 01/12/2012 New York, NY Brooklyn, NY PYA Winter Conference Chris Marangoudakis 917-567-3988 “Cretan Sisterhood” Annual Dinner Dance Koula Xenakis 347-312-3890 01/28/2012 Detroit, MI “Pseloretes” Annual Dinner Dance The Cretan Association of Pittsburgh “ARKADI-MALEME” Invites all to attend Annual Cretan Dinner Dance Hosting the PAA and PYA National Boards and Honoring Eugene N. Κατερινα ηλιοπουλου, Γραμματεας Cleveland, Ohio George Varouh Cretan Club First Annual Grecian Festival For the first time in the history of the Cretan Association of Cleveland, a festival was held on September 3 and 4 on the grounds of our beautiful edifice located at West 168 Street at Kamm’s Corners in the West Park Section of Cleveland. Festival chairpersons, Paul Manos (president), George Hohlakis (former president) and Steve Nikolakis met with the Kamm’s Corners Development Association, council representative from that ward and City of Cleveland officials to allow the Festival to take place and to close West 168th Street from Lorain Avenue south to Albers. This allowed the club to install a huge tent over the street, with an abundance of tables and chairs, where the bands played our traditional Greek music and where all enjoyed the traditional Greek cuisine. Saturday evening under the tent the Hellenic Dancers of St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church performed, and Sunday evening the Grecian Dancers from St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church performed their various dances dressed in traditional folk costumes. The popular Greek band Omega performed Saturday evening, and the popular band Karizma performed Sunday evening entertaining the crowds, and everyone joined in the dancing, young and old, Greek and non-Greek. Under a small tent set up in front of our building a grill was set up where gyros, souvlaki and french fries were cooked and served. An outside bar was set up under the tent installed at the side of the building with more tables and chairs for outside dining. Many thanks to our executive caterer, Steve Nikolakis, and his assistant John G. Elliott, who worked diligently for weeks to prepare and serve the scrumptious Greek food inside our air-conditioned center. Thanks also to helpers during the festival Bill Regan and Andy Rokakis for their help in the kitchen. Offerings included spanakopita, tiropita, moussaka, pastichio, Greek salad, smelts, lamb shanks, rice pilaf, Greek roasted potatoes, Grecian style green beans, vegetarian platter and much more. Greek (Mythos) beer, along with several Greek wines and soft drinks, was offered at the inside bar. The organizational efforts of pastry booth chairpersons, Maria Regan and Nancy Andos were fruitful because the pastry booth was full of all kinds of Greek and Cretan pastries to complete two days of the festival. Many, many thanks to all the ladies who spent hours baking. The pastry booth was well equipped to say the least. Many thanks also to the vendors who set up their booths in marvelous manner. The Cretan Center hall and the surrounding grounds were packed to capacity for hours. Chairperson Nancy Andos did a superb job on compiling the ad book. A 50/50 raffle was held on Sunday evening. At the formal opening ceremony, Father Jim Doukas, priest at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church gave the invocation. President Paul Manos welcomed and thanked the many people in attendance. Our very own young member, Eleni Nikolakis, with her brilliant voice, sang the National Anthem. Councilman Marty Keane commented on the accomplishments made by the Cretan Association in renovating the building and becoming a part of the Kamm’s Corner Association and presented a Resolution of Recognition plaque from the City of Cleveland to the Cretan Association. A representative of the US Marine Corps spoke commemorating George Hohlakis, who was a member of the US Marine Corps having served during the Vietnam War. A plaque from the Cretan Association was presented to George for his many significant services in completing work needed not only for the fruition of the building expansion, but also for his leading help in accomplishing this festival. Father Doukas gave the closing prayer as well. Thank you festival chairpersons and all members who volunteered their help. Because of your efforts this festival was a great success. New Members We are pleased to welcome Dr. George and Maria Markakis. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Saridakis, and Mr. Mark Paras. We look forward to having them participate at our meetings and events. Condolences Members of the George Varouh Cretan Club of Cleveland are deeply saddened of the recent passing of our great benefactor, Mr. George Varouh. Many condolences are offered to his family, Ari Varouh and Ron and Sandy Varouh, grandchildren and great grandchild. Through George’s generous contributions and with love in his heart for the Cretan heritage, the Cretan population of Cleveland, Ohio has realized a dream come true, a home of our very own, our Cretan Leshi. The Cleveland Chapter would not have been able to achieve such a beautiful edifice if it were not for his generous philanthropic donations that he so affectionately gave, not only in the expansion and remodeling of the building, but also through his philanthropic donation of $30,000 into an endowment fund in memory of his loving wife, Hedwig B. He was so much a part of our association that we certainly will miss his affectionate smile and the great love he showed for all of us. We are very proud that while he was still with us our members voted during a general assembly to change the name of our club in his honor. President Paul Manos announced the official renaming at the Thanksgiving Dinner Dance in November 2009, where Mr. Varouh in his modest way thanked all for bequeathing this honor on him. Σταύρος Mελαμπιώτης, Γραμματέας Mahoning Valley, Ohio Manolakakis-Theodorakis Chapter Condolences Our chapter is saddened to announce the passing of Charter Member Christ Michelakis, a proud American, Hellene, and Cretan. Christ was only 73 years old, but ac- complished much during his time with us. Born in 1937 in Warren, Ohio to Nicholas and Anna Blazakis Michelakis, who were from Maheri, Chania, Crete, Christ served as the elected Treasurer of Trumbull County, Ohio for 12 years until his retirement in 2007. He also served for many years as the chairman of the Trumbull County Democratic Party. In 2002 he served as a founding member of the Nicholas Manolakakis-Mikis Theodorakis Association of Cretans of the Mahoning Valley and served as a trustee of the organization for many years. Christ and his brothers Manny, John and Gus helped cook lamb and other foods at our many Cretan events, including our Battle of Crete picnic just this past May, in spite of his severe illness at the time. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and was a member of AHEPA Zeus 89, GAPA, and Saint Dimitrios Church of Warren, where his wonderful cooking talents were put to good use at the many church events throughout the years. Christ and his wife Betty traveled to Crete in what he described as a “once-in-a-lifetime visit” in 2002 at the same time as this writer and his brother Manuel Michelakis, Senator Harry Michelakis Meshel, Antonis Kostoglou and others and visited the village of his parents, Maheri, and many other historic sites. He spoke of returning to Crete for another visit this fall, but God had other plans for him. Chris was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Ohio State University Buckeyes. A few years ago, Christ lost his wife Betty and more recently his Brother John, another chapter charter member. Also predeceasing him was his sister Koula Skarlis and another brother Mike Michelakis. He is missed by his loving daughters Cathy Huggins, Denyse Click, and Diane Hess, their families and five grandchildren, a sister Katherine Leftheris, and brothers Manuel and Gus, as well as by all the members of the Manolakakis Theodorakis Association.
