Prayer for a Sick Person
Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our
Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me Your servant from all physical
and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant me patience in this sickness, strength of
body and spirit, and recovery of health. Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each
other that we may be healed. I pray that You heal me as Your servant and grant me the gift of complete
health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

to church your baby on the 40th day after its birth, no matter what day that might
be. There is no reason that you have to inconvenience the mom and the baby,
waiting in the back of the Narthex until the priest is available on a Sunday ONLY.
Make an appointment to come to church when it is convenient for you at a time
that will not disrupt the baby's routine. ANY day you would like. 9am through
6pm by appointment. Bring the entire family or come just with your husband and the baby. Whatever you want.
No waiting no inconvenience. More private time with the priest to talk about the future baptism if you wish. Call

O God, when You come upon the earth in
glory, the whole world will tremble. A river
of fire will bring all before Your Judgment

Όμως τη θέση μας μπροστά στο Θεό δεν την
καθορίζει κάποιο φαγητό, γιατί ούτε με το να φάμε
κερδίζουμε πνευματικά τίποτε ούτε με το να μη
φάμε χάνουμε τίποτε. Προσέχετε μόνο, μήπως το
νόμιμο αυτό δικαίωμά σας γίνει εμπόδιο σ’
εκείνους που είναι αδύνατοι στην πίστη. Γιατί, αν
ένας, ο οποίος είναι αδύνατος, δει εσένα, που έχεις
τη γνώση αυτή, να συμμετέχεις σε τραπέζι
ειδωλολατρικού ναού, δε θα ενθαρρυνθεί μήπως η
συνείδησή του - μια και είναι αδύνατος στην
πίστη, - στο να τρώει με λαθεμένη αντίληψη το
κρέας των ζώων που έχουν προσφερθεί θυσία στα
είδωλα; Kι έτσι, εξαιτίας της κακής χρήσης της
δικής σου γνώσης, θα χαθεί ο αδύνατος αδελφός,
για τον οποίο ο Xριστός πέθανε. Aμαρτάνοντας
όμως έτσι έναντι των αδελφών και προξενώντας
τραύματα στη συνείδησή τους, που είναι αδύνατη,
έναντι του Xριστού αμαρτάνετε. Γι’ αυτό,
λοιπόν, αν κάποιο φαγητό γίνεται αιτία να
σκοντάψει σε θέματα της πίστης ο αδελφός μου,
τότε, όχι, δε θα φάω κρέας ποτέ, για να μη
σκανδαλίσω τον αδελφό μου.
Δεν είμαι μήπως απόστολος εγώ; Δεν είμαι
ελεύθερος; Δεν έχω δει μήπως τον Kύριό μας
Iησού Xριστό; Δεν είστε εσείς ο καρπός του έργου
μου για τον Kύριο; Kι αν ακόμα για άλλους δεν
είμαι απόστολος, όμως τουλάχιστο για σας είμαι,

St. Paul's First Letter to the
Corinthians 8:8-13; 9:1-2
Brethren, food will not commend us to God.
We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no
better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling
block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a
man of knowledge, at table in an idol's temple,
might he not be encouraged, if his conscience
is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so
by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died.
Thus, sinning against your brethren and
wounding their conscience when it is weak,
you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a
cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat
meat, lest I cause my brother to fall.
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not
seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an
apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the
seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Matthew 25:31-46
The Lord said, "When the Son of man comes
in his glory and all the holy angels with him,
then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before
him will be gathered all the nations, and he
will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he
will place the sheep at his right hand, but the
goats at the left. Then the king will say to
those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of
my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for
you from the foundation of the world; for I
was hungry and you gave me food, I was
thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger
and you welcomed me, I was naked and you
clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I
was in prison and you came to me.' Then the
righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we
see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and
give you drink? And when did we see you a
stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe
you? And when did we see you sick or in
prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to
one of the least of these my brethren, you did
it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left
hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the

What we learned last week
The Second Sunday of the Triodion

‘Sunday of The Prodigal Son’
‘Let us eat and make merry; for this my son was
dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.'
‘Father, give me the share of the property that falls
to me.’
'Father, I have sinned against
1.What does the word “prodigal” mean? 2. What happens to the prodigal son in this story? 3. How does his
father react? 4. How does his brother react? 5. Why
is Jesus telling this parable? 6. What does this Gospel
passage mean for our lives?
1. Prodigal refers to one who spends money foolishly, recklessly and is wasteful with money. 2. He
asks his father for his share of his inheritance and
leaves home, He eventually realizes his mistake in
leaving the safety of his father and home. He, then
realizes his error and is willing to return to his father’s home, even if he became a servant in his father’s home. He returns home. 3. His father is overjoyed and thanks God for the return of his youngest
son. 4. His brother was angry that his father celebrated the return of his brother, even though he
wasted his inheritance on wasteful things. 5. Jesus
taught this parable to teach us that even when we
turn from what God has freely given us, He still welcomes us back joyfully. When those who were ‘lost’
return, God, who has waited patiently for their return, celebrates those who were lost, but have now
been found. 6. This Gospel from St. Luke allows us
to understand that God is always ready to welcome
those who leave the ‘safety of our ‘Father’s home’,
back into His embrace. Many who leave their
“Father’s home, to seek something ‘better, soon
realize that God waits patiently for our return.

The Last Judgment

The scrolls pronouncing the judgment can
be seen at Christ's feet and below them, Adam
and Eve bow before Christ. On the right, the
scroll proclaims “Come, you blessed of My Father, and inherit the kingdom”
On the left, the scroll condemns the unfaithful with the words, “Depart from me you cursed,
into the everlasting fire”
and the resurrection of the dead!
In the Parable of the Last Judgment, Christ tells
us of His Second Coming and all the living
and the dead who will be judged. He will speak
of what will happen when He will “come in His
glory
and all the holy angels with Him”.

Grace shining forth from your lips like a beacon has enlightened the universe.
It has shown to the world the riches of riches poverty;
it has revealed to us the heights of humility.
Teaching us by your words, O Father John Chrysostom,
intercede before the Word, Christ our God, to save our souls!
The Troparion (Tone 8) above is sung to pay homage to St. John Chrysostom, who is known as
being one of the most amazing orators of the Holy Fathers in our Orthodox faith. St. John Chrysostom, as
his name implies, is known ‘Golden Mouthed’. He was a wonderful orator and spoke well and glorified the
name of our Lord.
In our Archdiocese, we have a very worthy event that bears his name: St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. This ‘Festival’ includes two levels of competition: a Junior level and a Senior level of students from 7th to 12th grade. Each level is given 5 topics to select from; each dealing with a scripture reading
and questions that the students need to explain in their own words. Students are expected to write a speech
with their thoughts. Junior level speeches are 3 to 4 minutes long and Senior speeches are 4 to 5 minutes
long.
Once the speeches are complete, the students compete at their local level. The 2 Juniors and 2 Seniors who
are selected will then go on to the District level, along with the other 6 Districts in our Metropolis. From
the District level, 1 Junior and 1 Senior are selected from the Metropolis and 18 finalist go on to the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship
Fund provides college scholarships to the top speakers. In 2012, the top three speakers of each division received college scholarships of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000. This year, our own St. Nicholas Cathedral is hosting the Metropolis Oratorical Festival.
We are working with our local speakers at this time and would like to invite any other 7 th through 12th
graders to consider joining us and to prepare for this amazing event. This is an opportunity to participate in
the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival and to learn more about our faith. This is an outstanding way to
be involved in your Church Community. Join our group of speakers today!
