May we each join our voices with theirs in prayer and praise being filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord... (Ephesians 5:18-19). Archbishop Demetrios of America Chair of Hellenic College Holy Cross Board of Trustees ABOUT THIS RECORDING ΛΙΓΑ ΛΟΓΙΑ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΝ ΑΝΑ ΧΕΙΡΑΣ ΨΗΦΙΑΚΟ ΔΙΣΚΟ In April 2013, the Holy Cross Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir recorded this CD in the Holy Cross Chapel in Brookline, Massachusetts, in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. The choir consists of students at Hellenic College and Holy Cross who are preparing to become priests, deacons or lay leaders in the Greek Orthodox Church in the United States and abroad. Most of the choir members received their training in Byzantine Music at Holy Cross, part of whose mission is to be a center for in-depth study of the sacred art of chanting. The recording is structured as a condensed version of the Good Friday Orthros service, which in contemporary practice is usually celebrated on Holy Thursday evening and is known as the “Passion Service” as well as the “Service of the Twelve Gospels.” To reflect the current practice in the Holy Cross Chapel, the recording is bilingual. Most of the musical scores for the texts performed in Greek were composed by Petros the Peloponnesian (c. 1735 - 1778), widely acknowledged as the greatest post-Byzantine Greek ecclesiastical composer. There is also one composition by Konstantinos Vyzantios (1777-1862), Protopsaltis of the Great Church of Christ. The settings of the texts in English were composed by John Michael Boyer, Protopsaltis of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco and Holy Cross Master of Divinity candidate. Besides the 24-member choir, participants in the recording include Rev. Fr. Nicholas Kastanas, Assistant Adjunct Professor of Byzantine Music at Holy Cross and Presiding Priest at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Arlington, MA, and Rev. Fr. Panteleimon Papadopoulos, Archdeacon to Archbishop Demetrios of America and Director of the Archdiocesan School of Byzantine Music in New York City. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In this CD the students of Hellenic College Holy Cross deliver a performance of classical repertoire in a fashion that is faithful to the musical tradition of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople. In this way, they render the gracefilled hymnology of Great and Holy Friday accessible to American audiences, while setting a standard for the performance of Holy Week hymnology by all cantors in the English-speaking world. This makes a significant educational contribution to the liturgical life of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese as well as other Orthodox jurisdictions in America that wish to make use of Byzantine Music during the services of Holy Week. First and foremost, I would like to thank His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America for his paternal love and blessing of this project, as well as for his tireless efforts at promoting and disseminating the Psaltic Art throughout the country. I would also like to thank Rev. Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, President of Hellenic College Holy Cross, Rev. Dr. Fr. Thomas FitzGerald, former Dean of Holy Cross, Dr. James Skedros, Interim Dean of Holy Cross, Dr. Demetrios Katos, Dean of Hellenic College, Rev. Dr. Fr. James Katinas, Director of Institutional Advancement, and the entire Holy Cross faculty for their vision and strong support. Deep gratitude is due to Rev. Fr. Or in what have I wearied you? I gave light to your blind, I cleansed your lepers, I set upright a man lying on a bed. My people, what have I done to you, and how have you repaid me? Instead of the manna, gall; instead of the water, vinegar; instead of loving me, you have nailed me to a Cross. I can endure no longer; I will call my nations, and they will glorify me, with the Father and the Spirit; and I shall grant them eternal life’. Today the veil of the Temple is rent as a reproof to the transgressors; and the sun hides its own rays, as it sees the Master crucified. Lawgivers of Israel, Jews and Pharisees, the choir of the Apostles cries out to you, ‘See a Temple, which you have destroyed; see a Lamb, whom you have crucified. You handed him over to a tomb, but by his own authority he has risen. Do not be deceived, O Jews, for it is he who saved you in the sea, and fed you in the desert. He is the life and the light and the peace of the world’. At that time, two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him vinegar and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us! "But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." And he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom." And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this, he breathed his last. Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "Certainly this man was innocent!" And all the multitudes who assembled to see the sight, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things. Glory to your forebearance, O Lord, glory to you. Impious and lawless people, why do you meditate vain things? Why have you condemned the life of all to death? O great marvel! That the Creator of the world, who loves humankind, is betrayed into the hand of transgressors and lifted up on a tree, that he may free the prisoners in Hell. Long-suffering Lord, glory to you. Today the blameless Virgin, when she saw you hanging on the Cross, lamenting with a mother’s love, bitterly wounded in her heart, groaning in lamentation from the depth of her soul, she struck her cheeks and tore her hair; and so beating her breast she cried out with grief, ‘Woe is me, my divine Child! Woe is me, O light of the world! Why have you left my sight, O Lamb of God?’ Therefore the armies of the Bodiless Powers were seized with terror, as they said, ‘Lord, beyond understanding, glory to you. Next day, that is after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, 'After three days I will rise again.' Therefore, order the sepulcher to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away, and tell the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last fraud will be worse than the first." Pilate said to them, "You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can." So they went and made the sepulcher secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard. Glory to you, O Lord, glory to you.
