President’s Message
Permanent Home of PAA Archives
Close to Reality...
Dear fellow Cretans,
I want to begin by wishing all our members, friends and the Cretan community throughout the U.S. and Canada a Happy
Easter and Xronia Pola. May Jesus Christ’s blessings bring hope and peace to you and your family, Kali Anastassi!
This month, my message is dedicated to a PAA project, long in the making; the PAA Archives Exhibit at the Maliotis
Center, Brookline, Massachusetts. I would like to update you on the progress we are making toward this long and arduous
effort to establish a permanent home for the PAA Archives. On the cover of this issue of KPHTH you will see the architectural drawings of the lower level of the Maliotis Center as envisioned by architect Bill Frangos, a PAA member from Boston.
The 5,000 square foot multi-purpose facility is designed for the display of the PAA archives and other purposes. These will
include small and medium size conferences, gatherings, meetings, and cultural events. Also in this issue, you will be able to
review the entire proposal presented to the Friends of the Maliotis Center Board of Directors at its bi-annual meeting, April
7, 2011. As PAA President and also a member of the Maliotis Board of Directors, I drafted the proposal in a manner that
would satisfy both sides. I am happy to report that, after many years of work and numerous attempts to reach agreement,
this proposal was accepted with much enthusiasm, exuberance and good will. Although there are still some minor issues to
negotiate with the Center, the most difficult part has been accomplished.
The next step will be to reach an agreement with the Hellenic College at Holy Cross, owner of the building and grounds.
Upon my return from Greece in early May, I plan to meet with the board of the Hellenic College to negotiate this agreement.
Once that has been accomplished, I will present the overall proposed project to our own PAA board for final approval.
The issue of the PAA archives has been at the forefront of discussion, debate, and deliberation over the last several years
but, more so, lately as the project was beginning to reach fruition. Some of our members have questioned whether the
archives are the true property of the PAA and further, whether the PAA should be the sole custodian of the archives. Others
differed regarding digitizing PAA archives at the University of Michigan Library, a project which is now nearing completion.
As PAA president, my responsibility is to do everything possible to keep peace, harmony and brotherhood in our association. Above all, however, I am obliged to follow the democratic process and, primarily as it relates to the PAA Constitution.
That process calls for each and every one of us to comply with the majority opinion whether or not we agree with it. We,
as individuals, may differ from the majority, and we certainly have a right to do so. At the end of the day, however, we must
respect and comply with the majority decision. We must not become obstacles to the democratic process lest we create
chaos, ill will and disillusionment.
The Maliotis Center as a home for our PAA archives is a serious undertaking, one that represents the wishes of the late
Kostas Maliotis and the blessings and support of all Cretans throughout the U.S. It has the financial support of our PAA
members along with the dream that we have dreamed for many years and are now, finally, seeing some light at the end of
the tunnel. I look forward to continuing this effort to make that dream a reality and ask for everyone’s help and support.
Only together, with unified effort and resolve, we can, ultimately, realize that dream.

Μόνιμη Στέγη των Αρχείων της ΠΕΑ
κοντά στη Πραγματοποίηση...
Αγαπητοί φίλοι,
Θέλω να ξεκινήσω ευχόμενος σε όλα τα μέλη, τους φίλους και την Κρητική κοινότητα στις ΗΠΑ και τον Καναδά, Καλό Πάσχα και
Χρόνια Πολλά. Είθε οι ευλογίες του Ιησού Χριστού να φέρουν ελπίδα και ειρήνη σε εσάς και τις οικογένειες σας. Καλή Ανάσταση!
Αυτό το μήνα, το μήνυμά μου είναι αφιερωμένο σε ένα έργο της ΠΕΑ που προεργάζεται εδώ και αρκετό καιρό, τη
Στέγη των Αρχείων της ΠΕΑ στο Μαλιότειο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο, στο Μπρούκλαϊν της Μασαχουσέτης. Θα ήθελα να σας
ενημερώσω σχετικά με την πρόοδο που κάνουμε προς αυτή την μακρά και επίπονη προσπάθεια για να καθιερώσουμε
ένα μόνιμο σπίτι για τα αρχεία της ΠΕΑ. Στο εξώφυλλο του παρόντος τεύχους του KPHTH θα δείτε τα προτεινόμενα
αρχιτεκτονικά σχέδια του υπόγειου του Μαλιότειου Πολιτιστικού Κέντρου, όπως το σχεδίασε ο αρχιτέκτονας Βασίλης
Φράγκος, μέλος της ΠΕΑ από Βοστώνη. H 5,000 τετραγωνικά πόδια εγκατάσταση πολλαπλών χρήσεων είναι σχεδιασμένη
για την φύλαξη των αρχείων της ΠΕΑ αλλά και για άλλες χρήσεις, περιλαμβανόμενου μικρές και μεσαίου μεγέθους
συνεδριάσεις, συνεστιάσεις, συναντήσεις και πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις. Επίσης, σε αυτό το τεύχος, θα επανεξετάσετε το
σύνολο της πρότασης που υποβάλλαμε στο Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο του οργανισμού “Φίλοι του Μαλιότειου Πολιτιστικού
Κέντρου” στην συνεδρίασή του, στις 7 Απριλίου 2011. Ως Πρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ και ως μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου
του Μαλιότειου Πολιτιστικού Κέντρου, συνέταξα την πρόταση κατά τρόπο που να ικανοποιεί και τις δύο πλευρές. Είμαι
ευτυχής να αναφέρω ότι, μετά από πολλά χρόνια δουλειάς και πολλές προσπάθειες να καταλήξουν σε συμφωνία, η
πρόταση αυτή έγινε δεκτή με μεγάλο ενθουσιασμό, και καλή θέληση. Παρά το γεγονός ότι εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν
ορισμένες λεπτομέρειες ως προς τις διαπραγματεύσεις με το Κέντρο, το πιο δύσκολο κομμάτι έχει ολοκληρωθεί.
Το επόμενο βήμα θα είναι η επίτευξη συμφωνίας με το Ελληνικό Κολλέγιο του Τιμίου Σταυρού, που είναι και ο
ιδιοκτήτης του κτιρίου. Μετά την επιστροφή μου από την Ελλάδα στις αρχές Μαΐου, σκοπεύω να συναντηθώ με το
διοικητικό συμβούλιο του Ελληνικού Κολλεγίου για να διαπραγματευτούμε αυτή τη συμφωνία. Από τη στιγμή που θα την
ολοκληρώσουμε, θα παρουσιάσω το προτεινόμενο σχέδιο στο ΔΣ της ΠΕΑ για τη τελική έγκριση.
Το θέμα των αρχείων της ΠΕΑ είναι στην πρώτη γραμμή των συζητήσεων, διαλόγων και διαβουλεύσεων εδώ και
αρκετά χρόνια, αλλά, πολύ περισσότερο, τον τελευταίο καιρό καθώς το έργο έχει φτάσει τον σημείο να αποδίδει καρπούς.
Ορισμένα από τα μέλη μας αμφισβητούν εάν τα αρχεία είναι περιουσία της ΠΕΑ και περαιτέρω, εάν η ΠΕΑ θα πρέπει
να είναι ο μοναδικός θεματοφύλακας των αρχείων. Άλλοι έχουν διαφορετική γνώμη όσον αφορά την ψηφιοποίηση των
αρχείων της ΠΕΑ στη βιβλιοθήκη του Πανεπιστημίου του Μίτσιγκαν, ένα έργο το οποίο βρίσκεται σε φάση ολοκλήρωσης.
Ως πρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ, ευθύνη μου είναι να κάνω ό, τι είναι δυνατόν για να διατηρηθεί η ειρήνη, η αρμονία και η
αδελφοσύνη στον οργανισμό μας. Πάνω απ‘ όλα όμως, είμαι υποχρεωμένος να ακολουθήσω τις δημοκρατικές διαδικασίες
και, κατά κύριο λόγο το καταστατικό της ΠΕΑ. Αυτό απαιτεί από το κάθε ένα από εμάς να συμμορφωθεί με τις αποφάσεις της
πλειοψηφίας ασχέτως εάν δεν συμφωνεί. Ως άτομα, μπορεί να έχουμε διαφορετική άποψη από την πλειοψηφία, και ασφαλώς
έχουμε αυτό το δικαίωμα. Στο τέλος όμως, πρέπει να σεβόμαστε και να συμμορφωνόμαστε με τις αποφάσεις της πλειοψηφίας.
Δεν πρέπει να γινόμαστε εμπόδια στη δημοκρατική διαδικασία, δημιουργώντας έτσι χάος, κακή θέληση και απογοήτευση.
Το Μαλιότειο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο ως μία στέγη των αρχείων της ΠΕΑ είναι μια σοβαρή επιχείρηση, η οποία
αντιπροσωπεύει την ευχή του αείμνηστου Κώστα Μαλιώτη και τις ευλογίες και την υποστήριξη όλων των Κρητικών στις
ΗΠΑ. Έχει την οικονομική υποστήριξη των μελών της ΠΕΑ, είναι ένα πολυπόθητο όνειρο πολλών ετών και τώρα, επιτέλους,
φαίνεται κάποιο φως στο βάθος του τούνελ. Προβλέπω στη συνέχιση αυτής της προσπάθειας να κάνουμε αυτό το όνειρο
πραγματικότητα και ζητώ τη βοήθεια και την υποστήριξη όλων σας. Μόνο μαζί, ενωμένοι σε αυτή τη προσπάθεια και με
αποφασιστικότητα, μπορούμε τελικά να κάνουμε αυτό το όνειρο πραγματικότητα.

Maliotis Cultural Center
Proposal for a permanent home for the PAA archives

The Pancretan Association of
America Inc.,a national not-for-profit
fraternal organization chartered in the
state of New York (PAA), wishes to enter
into agreement with the Friends of the
Maliotis Cultural Center (Friends) and
the Hellenic College, Inc., relative to
the renovation and use by the PAA of
the lower level space of the Maliotis
Cultural Center (Center) at the
Hellenic College / Holy Cross,
for the purpose of storing, classifying,
and exhibiting all PAA
archives.
Vision
In the early years of migration to
America, the “Land of Opportunity”,
like other Hellenes, the Cretan community of the U.S. and Canada endured
exceptional hardships of discrimination, difficult working conditions,
poverty, and loneliness. In due course,
however, the Cretan immigrants assimilated, raised families, and became
productive members of their newly
adopted homeland. Since the early
days and during the course of the last
100 years, Cretans of North America
wrote their own history, one filled with
pain and tears, but also with triumph
and glory. Today, we find this history
in books, magazines, photographs,
artifacts and paraphernalia scattered
in basements and boxes throughout
the country. The vision of the PAA is to
gather all these mementos of Cretan
life through history in the U.S. and
Canada, preserve them and exhibit
them for future generations to view

and enjoy. The Maliotis Center is an
ideal location for the PAA archives, not only because of
its central geographic
location amidst the
Greek community
along the east coast
of the U.S.,
but
also
because
of the strong bond
with the founder of the
Maliotis Center, Mr. Costa
Maliotis, a Cretan immigrant, past
president of the PAA, and great supporter of Cretan history and culture.
PAA-History and Mission
During the early migration of
Greeks to America, 1895-1915, many
young Cretan men left their homes in
Crete to seek a better life for themselves. Poverty and unbearable conditions forced them to leave their homeland. When they arrived in America,
however, they found conditions worse
than those they had left behind. They
became America’s coal miners, railroad
workmen and shoe shine boys. To ease
their misery, they gathered in “Kafenia”
in Boston, Salt Lake City, Wheeling
and New York. There, they spoke their
own language, shared news from back
home, listened to their music and
danced their traditional dances. They
comforted one another as much as
they
were
able.
The
Pancretan Association
of America evolved
from the necessity of these
young men and boys to stay close to
one another for comfort and security.
They gathered in groups and formed
small chapters, held meetings and
organized social functions. In 1929,
the PAA was officially organized as
the federation of all Cretan chapters
throughout the U.S. Its mission, as
relevant then as it is today, was charity
and philanthropy, culture and education, and scholarship. Over the years
since its inception, the PAA has participated in hundreds of philanthropic
and charitable projects in Crete, other
areas of Greece, and in the U.S. Following WWII, the PAA created assistance
programs for poor unwed orphan girls;
raised the funds for the construction
of the Venizelion Hospital in Iraklion;
started the University of Crete Press
(more than 400 textbooks have been
translated into Greek for classroom use
at Greek universities); more recently,
held a nationwide fundraiser for the
fire victims in Peloponese; continues to
support a number of schools and day
care facilities for people with special
needs and autistic children; supports
a summer camp program for poor
children run by the Archdioceses of
Crete. The PAA has helped hundreds of

agreement with the Center and the
College whereby PAA has the nonexclusive right to utilize and occupy
the lower level of the Center for the
purpose of collecting, classifying, and
exhibiting all PAA archives as set out in
this agreement.
PAA Representatives
The PAA is administered by a
30-member board of directors who are
elected at the PAA national convention
every two years. The board operates
under the PAA Constitution and ByLaws and is charged with carrying out
the PAA mission. Normally, the board
meets three or four times a year at different locations throughout the country, but also meets by teleconference at
least three times per year. In addition,

The PAA is also very active in promoting our Cretan culture. Each year,
over one hundred musicians, dancers,
theatre performers, singers, culinary
experts tour the U.S. They perform to
Cretan and mainstream audiences and
do their best to perpetuate our culture
for the benefit of the younger generations, individuals who have assimilated
completely and who are in danger of
losing their Cretan roots, Hellenism,
and their Christian Orthodox values.

Description of Proposed Use
of the Space
The space will have a multi-purpose
use. First, it will be an exhibit center
for PAA archives. These are primarily
books, magazine, periodicals, important letters, artifacts, the PAA Constitution and Bylaws, and minutes from
historic meetings and conventions.
They will be housed in specially lit
cabinetry at the perimeter of a large
(2000 SF) Exhibit Room. A library (600
SF) will contain material for research of
PAA history and will offer the appropriate accommodations for research and
work space. A conference room (300
SF) will accommodate small meetings
of up to 20 people while the Exhibit
Room will be used for meetings of up
to 200 people seated and approximately 300 standing. The multi-purpose

Exhibit Room will also serve as a dance
instruction area, small seminars, and
temporary cultural exhibits. There will
be separate storage space for unclassified archives as well as a secured
storage room for the exclusive use of
the Center, for a total of approximately
4950 square feet.
The space will be used by the PAA
for periodic functions such as board
meetings and conferences. With specific, prior permission from the PAA, it
will also be used by PAA chapters and
other groups that promote the culture
of Crete and Hellenism. Usage of the
space by others will require the permission of the PAA and the Center upon
giving the proper notice. For groups
using the facility, a small fee will be
charged designed to cover the maintenance and utilities of the space.
The facility will not operate on a
regular time schedule. Rather, the exhibit will be shown to designated groups
upon pre-arranged scheduling or during
meetings and functions of the PAA, the
Center, or other groups using the space.
When the facility is in use, an individual
from each group will be assigned as primary contact / coordinator. Therefore,
no permanent staff is anticipated.

Timetable
It is anticipated that completion of construction will take
approximately six months from the issuance of construction permits. Given that the construction permitting and
licensing process is sometimes not a definitive variable, we
anticipate completion of the project within twelve to fifteen
months from the date of acceptance of this proposal.
Contribution of Project to the Maliotis Center /
Greek Community
The mission of the Maliotis Cultural Center and that of
the PAA are in many ways similar. Since its inception, the
PAA has promoted the Cretan culture and traditions as well
as the idea of Hellenism and Christian Orthodoxy. Similarly,
the Maliotis Center has centered its efforts on continuing
the culture and traditions of Greece. When he conceived
the idea of a cultural center for Hellenism, Mr. Maliotis
recognized the importance of keeping our Greek values, our
history, and our culture. The PAA and the Maliotis Center
promote the Hellenic heritage to the Greek community in
Boston and beyond, so that future generations may retain
their Hellenic identity in this, the great melting pot of the
world. Our mission is quite similar, and even though we face
an uphill struggle against today’s assimilation and globalization, our common goal is well defined.
Costs / Financing of Construction
At this time, the architectural plans have not been finalized and, therefore, we do not have accurate cost figures for
the renovation. However, we believe that a good preliminary
estimate would be approximately $75 - $85 per square foot or
a total of $375,000 - $425,000.
We anticipate the cost to maintain the space will be minimum and will be limited to cleaning, general maintenance, and
utilities. These costs will be tracked separately and paid for by

The PAA views this transaction
as a gift from the PAA to the Center. This would be in addition to previous donations made
by the PAA, i.e. $25,000.00 donated when the Center was
under construction. In exchange the Center will make the
space available to the PAA, at no rental charge, on a nonexclusive basis, for as long as the Center operates. This was
the wish and stipulation of Mr Maliotis and this transaction
fulfills his direction, agreement, and instruction granting the
PAA this use and occupancy.

Message from Cretan Alumni Network Chair, Stacy Marakis
Dear Fellow Cretans:
At the PAA convention in
Greece, membership development and our ability to reach
out to former PYA members was
a topic that was discussed and
debated. To preserve the future
of PAA and increase its membership, the Convention voted to create a new committee that would
focus on developing a program to entice these
members back into the organization and to develop a program to sustain this new membership.
I have been very fortunate to have worked
with an excellent team as interim Chair for the
committee which has chosen the name “Cretan
Alumni Network”, aka CAN. The Committee is
comprised of many former leaders of our PYA,
including these former presidents:
Diane Kounalakis (1981-1986)
Mike Kastrenakis (1988-1990)
Andy Boutsikakis (1992-1995)
Mike Detorakis (1995-1997)
George Zoumberakis (2003-2005)
In addition, many other former PYA presidents
have been eager and willing to assist in spreading
the word. This includes: Jim Saklas (1973-1975),
George Pavlakis (1975-1977), Greg Simvoulakis
(1977-1979), Harriet Papasifakis-McGraw (19791981), Mike Pappas (1986-1988), Amalia Kalogridakis (2001-2003), Manoli Sifakis (2005-2007),
and Maria Kiagias (2007-2009).
With this newly formed committee, it was
quite clear to everyone that their goals were
strong, in helping the PAA succeed, prosper and
grow in the future. Within the first few weeks of
its formation, the committee’s energy and effort
was amazing! As word spread around the country
about this renewed enthusiasm, individuals from
coast to coast began to reach out, wanting to be a
part of the future of the PAA.
Let me begin by saying, “CAN” is NOT a new
organization. It is a committee of the PAA and not
a separate organization. It was given the task of
helping to develop ideas to enroll new members,
bring back former members and create network
opportunities for all its members.
Who is CAN? We are the alumni of the PYA.
What is CAN? The mission of the Cretan
Alumni Network of the Pancretan Association of
America (PAA) is to provide an environment for Cretan American young
professionals to share and exchange ideas in a social, cultural and
educational setting in order to promote the values and heritage of their
Cretan culture.
It will be a vehicle to increase the membership of the PAA in order
to continue its work of philanthropy, culture and education for many
generations to come.
Where is CAN? We are everywhere. We are members of the PAA
and local Chapters.
When is CAN? To kick-off our efforts, there are at least three REUNION events during the 2011 PAA Convention in Clearwater, FL. The
first event will be on Sunday, June 26th, a “Party of the Decades”, which
will take place following the picnic. The second event will take place
on Tuesday, June 28th during the Margaritaville event of the convention
and the final event will take place on Wednesday, June 29th before the
Cretan Banquet, which will be a cocktail party/orientation event.
How will “CAN” bring back members? CAN is networking. We
began our committee work by reaching out to fellow Cretans throughout the country, asking them to serve as ambassadors within their
chapters. In turn, we are empowering local chapter leaders to reach
out and contact former PYA members and current PAA members,
notifying Cretans about the reunion at the convention, in addition to
local events, and to begin to build a database of professionals to create
a PAA professional directory.
We CAN nurture and help build the membership of the future. We
CAN preserve our culture and heritage. We CAN build a professional/
social network that will empower our members. We CAN promote and
strengthen the PAA Philanthropic causes. Our former PYA leaders CAN
be the leaders of tomorrow. The PYA alumnae CAN be the future of
PAA. And, yes, together, we CAN lead the PAA to a new future.
We have many ideas, and many tasks we would like to execute.
However, we need everyone’s assistance to make this succeed.
Please spread the word and join us for what we hope will be the
biggest organized PYA reunion in Florida this summer. And, yes you
CAN join us for fun in the sun, dancing in the dark, singing in the rain
and memories galore!!!

indicated time period for the two primary classes of
accounts: 1) the KPHTH magazine, and 2) all other
general expenditures. It does not show income and
expenditures for scholarship, educational/cultural
and philanthropic programs. This is because of
space considerations and because all the monies
that come into the PAA for those three purposes are
expended for those three purposes.
Again, because of space limitations, President
Manousakis decided to only present summary numbers. Without detail, a summary may be confusing.
Furthermore, the income and expenditures of the
PAA are not consistent month to month. For example, dues income comes mostly in the 2nd Quarter,
while most expenditures occur in the 1st and 4th
Quarters. Consequently one quarter’s numbers
do not give a consistent picture of our operations.
However, after all four quarters are presented, you
will have a much better understanding of the PAA’s
finances.
Within QuickBooks, I have the item by item
details of the all income and disbursements. If the
membership shows a great interest in seeing more
detail, and space is available in the magazine, then I
will present greater detail in the future.

PAA 42nd Pre-Convention Standing Committees
According to PAA Constitution and
Bylaws we want to inform our membership to the formation of the PreConvention Standing Committees. The
purpose is to complete deliberations
before the convention in order to save
time during business sessions at the
convention. This means that the committee work will begin three to four
months before the start of the Convention. These committees will:
• Generate new programs,
resolve problems, etc.
• Meet and discuss issues by
means of teleconferences, internet discussions and, if necessary in meetings.
• Develop recommendations
and resolutions and present them to
the convention’s General Assembly for
disposition.

Message from Women’s Executive Director

Memorial for Eleftherios Venizelos
On Sunday, March 20, 2011, the Cultural Committees
of the New York and New Jersey chapters came together to
honor the memory of Eleftherios Venizelos at a memorial
service held at St. Demetrios Church in Astoria. Following
the service, members gathered at the Kritiko Spiti in Astoria
where Second Vice President of PAA and former President of the Omonoia
chapter, Nikos Kastrinakis, gave a heartfelt speech on the life of Eleftherios
Venizelos.
Greek Independence Day Celebrations
On Friday, March 25, 2011, Maria Koudelou, president of the Cultural committees of the New York and New Jersey Cretans, attended the raising of the Greek
flag in Bowling Green, New York. Later that evening, Maria Koudelou and Maria
Stratoudakis, PAA Women’s Executive Director, attended the annual dinner dance
of the Hellenic Federation of New York, along with several other Cretans.
On Saturday, March 26, a Greek dance festival organized by the Hellenic
Federation of New York was held at the Kritiko Spiti of the Omonoia Chapter.
Charlie Maragoudakis, former president of Omonoia, served as Master of Ceremonies. Those in attendance included: Minister for Citizen Protection Mr.
Papoutsis, Maria Koudelou, Maria Stratoudakis, District 2 Governor Zaharoula
Marmatakis and several dignitaries from Greece and New York. For several
hours, the Kritiko Spiti was filled with Greek music and dance. Congratulations
to Mr. Maragoudakis and all the Greek Youth for their participation.
On Sunday, March 27, the annual Greek Independence Day Parade was
held on Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. The cold weather and winds
were no match for the spirit and enthusiasm of the Cretans of New York and
New Jersey! As always, the Cretans were represented with a float featuring live music and dancing from the Youth, and a strong showing of marchers along the route. Several national PAA officers were represented at the
parade. Among them: Second Vice President Nikos Kastrinakis, Women’s
Executive Director Maria Stratoudakis , PYA President Eleni Sopasis, District 2
Governor Zaharoula Marmatakis, Cultural Chair Takis Psarakis, Philanthropic
Chair Stavros Antonakakis, and Auditor General Maria Makropoulos. Also participating in the parade were Maria Koudelou, President of the Cultural Committees, several Chapter presidents, the local Youth, and many members of all
the chapters in New York and New Jersey. A proud day for Greeks and Cretans!

of the Pancretan Association of
America:
With gratitude and honor I
would like to announce my candidacy for the position of the Third
Vice President of the Pancretan Association of America in the upcoming 42nd National PAA Convention.
As a 3rd Vice President, I would have
the opportunity to implement and
to work towards increasing our
membership. In this position, I will
communicate and work directly
with the District Governors and
Chapter Presidents in order to
deliberate, analyze and resolve issues. We can work towards bringing
back our young and old members,
as well as new ones, so they can
get energized and participate in the
betterment of our organization.
I have the drive, enthusiasm and
willingness to work from the position as a 3rd V.P., in order to
perpetuate the vision of the PAA that we inherited from our
forefathers, and to structure it to the needs of our membership today. I will be the link so that we reconnect PAA with
every local chapter in the nation.
For those who do not know me, I was born in Kastelli, Kissamou Chania. There, I finished my education at the Athens
Technological Institute and completed my military obligations.
Along with my wife Despina who is from Kourna, Apokoronou, in
1971 we immigrated to the United States seeking a better future.
We live in Toledo, Ohio where we raised our two children, Manoli and Eleftheria. For 35 years, we have operated
restaurants, donut shops, and real estate. My involvement
with PAA began right after becoming a member of the Psiloritis Chapter of Detroit and later, in 1981, I joined the newly
formed chapter, El Greco in Ann Arbor Michigan. It was my
honor and joy to serve as President of El Greco for three,
four-year terms. Subsequently I have served four years as a
member of the PAA Fundraising and Investment Committee
and then two years as Chairman. In the 4th District I have
served two years as Lieutenant Governor and, currently, four
years as Governor.
I consider it truly an honor to have had the opportunity

μαζί τα όποια προβλήματα ώστε να μπορέσουμε να
προσελκύσουμε ξανά παλιά και νέα μέλη, ώστε να
συμμετάσχουν και να ενεργοποιηθούν για το καλό και το
μέλλον της οργάνωσης μας.
Επιπλέον έχω το ζήλο, τον ενθουσιασμό και την
όρεξη να εργασθώ από την θέση του Γ’ Αντιπροέδρου σε
οποιοδήποτε τομέα που αφορά τη συνεργασία και την
εξάπλωση των ιδεών με όραμα να συνεχίσουμε και να
ευρύνουμε όλα όσα μας κληροδότησαν οι προκάτοχοι μας.
Θα είμαι ο συνδετικός κρίκος ώστε να επανασυνδέσουμε
την ΠΕΑ με κάθε τοπικό σύλλογο σε όλη τη χώρα.
Για όσους δεν με γνωρίζουν γεννήθηκα στο Καστέλι
Κισσάμου, Χανίων, όπου τελειώνοντας τις σπουδές μου
στο Αθηναϊκό Τεχνολογικό Κολλέγιο και υπηρετώντας τη
στρατιωτική μου θητεία, ήρθα στην Αμερική το 1971 μαζί
μα τη γυναίκα μου Δέσποινα από το Κουρνά, Αποκορώνου
για ένα καλλίτερο μέλλον, όπως οι περισσότεροι από εμάς.
Διαμένομαι στο Toledo, Ohio, και αποκτήσαμε δύο
παιδιά, τον Μανώλη και την Ελευθερία, και για 35

Όλοι νοιαζόμαστε για την Ελλάδα μας, την
οικονομία της που χειμάζεται, τα προϊόντα και τις

the Tradition Continues!

When I think about my childhood,
my fondest memories are of our Greek
Easters in New Hampshire. While my
parents left New Hampshire in the early 40s to work at Pratt and Whitney in
Hartford, Connecticut during the war,
the rest of my Mom’s family stayed in
New Hampshire, all nine brothers and
sisters and their families. And this is
where we returned, year after year to
celebrate our traditional Easter.
I remember my parents waiting
for the income tax return so we could
all go out and buy new clothes for the
holiday. Luckily, with Greek Easter
usually arriving later than the “American” Easter, we were fortunate to get
everything on sale. Our journey began

right after Good Friday services. The
road to New Hampshire during those
early years was mostly a two-lane highway and took what seemed forever for
anxious little kids to get started on the
celebration of Easter with cousins and
other family and friends. Since there
were no “Greek” stores in New Hampshire, we would always stop in Springfield to buy feta, olives, Greek wine,
etc. Next stop was “Nick’s Nest,” in
Holyoke. Well, we had to stop there
for hot dogs; after all, the owner was
Greek. I remember pouring nickels into
his one-of-a-kind juke box as the curtain opened to display monkeys playing
instruments while the music played.
Back on to Route 5, we held our breath
through Northampton wondering if
the car would make it up the hill in the
center of town.
As we arrived at Yiayia and Papou’s
farm, all the family poured out of the
farmhouse to greet us. All the uncles,
aunts and cousins were there. After
many hugs and kisses, the car was unloaded and our “Big Fat Greek Easter”
began. Across the street, in front of the
barn, there it was—our Easter lamb.
We all went over to pet it as it continually would “baaahh” at us. Since Dad
and Uncle Terry were in the restaurant
business, it was their job to kill and
dress the lamb. We always felt sorry
for Dad (not to mention the lamb)
because Dad was such a softie and we
knew he didn’t like to do it. But, as he

My sister, brother, cousins and I are ready for church in Keene, NH.
said, “somebody has to.” We don’t
know when the slaughter occurred,
but on Saturday, there it was, skewered
and ready to go.
I will never forget the smell of “innards” in Yiayia’s house! We kids were
very happy to find lots of things to do
outside while she cleaned the intestines, etc. to prepare what we called,
the “guts soup,” better known as mageritsa. The red eggs were ready; Mom
made the bread (her specialty). Yes,
Mom’s bread was the best. I remember one year she was in Greece, so I
had to make it. We ended up playing
frisbie with it—it was so hard and flat.
Saturday night, the whole family
went to the Anastasi service in Keene,
New Hampshire. Since it was a small
town and my Mom’s family was raised
in that church, it was a welcome homecoming for all of us as they greeted
their old friends and Koumbari. We
donned our new fancy city clothes
and really thought we were special.
Since our church in Hartford, Connecticut was so much larger, this little
church, which looked like a house to
us, seemed very different. We had to
load our new pocketbooks with change
because they passed the tray around
at least five times. We kids laughed
at this and thought they were taking
advantage of the “city slickers.” I remember thinking, “poor dad, he has to
dish out so much money.” But I could
tell he didn’t mind at all. My fondest
memory was seeing Yiayia all dressed
up with hat, stockings, takounia; the
works. It was a far cry from her normal
“house” dress.
After church, we all piled into the
car to make our way back to the farm
in West Swanzey. Yes, we all kept our
candles lit as we arrived home. It was
a miracle we didn’t set something on
fire! As the adults mingled, broke their
fast, and reminisced, all the cousins
were sent upstairs to sleep together
on the quilts and blankets set out on
the floor. We didn’t get much sleep as
there was a hole in the floor and we
preferred to listen to the conversation
going on below. They had so much to
talk about.
Easter Sunday morning always
started early. Uncle Jim and Uncle
Leon were already outside in the yard
taking turns at turning the lamb over
the charcoal fire. There was no grill,
just a bed of coal with two “Y” sticks to
hold the spit. We took turns turning
the lamb and taking pictures. As the
morning went on, we all anticipated
the Easter dinner. It was wonderful.
Although we kids skipped the “guts
soup”, we enjoyed all the wonderful
Greek dishes and the roast lamb. Dad
was the only one who ate the lamb’s
head, which he had to do when we
weren’t around. After a long, drawnout dinner, we cracked our eggs, the
adults cleaned up and everyone took a
well-deserved nap.

was incredibly sad after such a festive
celebration with our family, as we knew
we wouldn’t be together again until the
next holiday.
After Papou’s death, Yiayia sold
the farm and moved to town. We still
continued the traditions behind the
hotel and diner that had been purchased for Uncle Pete to operate when
he returned from the war. Yiayia lived
there, too.
To this day, I look back and wonder
how my Papou, George Nikiforakis,
from Pemonia, Apokorona, Crete, managed to come to America with his wife
Katina and one child, work in a factory
and save enough money to buy a farm
for $1500 from Yale University. According to our family history, they came
to America in 1912, sponsored by the
Greek Church in Lowell, Massachusetts,
where they also found work for them
in a factory that made blankets for the
military, in Marlborough, New Hampshire. They were each paid 50 cents a
day and given board. My Papou made
his living in farming and raised ten children, three of whom were adopted.
The Greek traditions that were
instilled in us by my parents and grandparents are indelible and long lasting, inspiring us to get together every
Easter and cook the traditional lamb
on a spit. All but one of Mom’s nine
siblings has passed, and, thankfully, all
their grandchildren continue to keep
the tradition alive.

ΑΝΑΣΤΑΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the fundamental truth and absolute fact of the Christian faith.
It is the central experience and essential preaching
of the Orthodox Church. It confirms the authenticity of Christ’s remarkable earthly life and vindicates
the truth of His teaching. The Resurrection of Christ
is the guarantee of our salvation. Jesus Christ has
truly risen; our sins are forgiven, death is destroyed,
and we are guaranteed new and eternal life. Jesus
Christ is our Savior, and His glorious and life-giving
Resurrection is the source and foundation of our
hope as Orthodox Christians.
From the tomb of the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ
comes Light, Life, and Love. Jesus Christ, our Risen
King, is the Light of the world, and in His light we
shall see light. Jesus Christ, rising from the dead,
is the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6). Jesus tells us in the Holy Gospel, “I am the light
of the world; he who follows Me will not walk
in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John
8:12). The powerful light and glory that was present at the moment of the resurrection give light,
clarity and meaning to us today and always. For, as
Saint Paul says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday
and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). For it is by shining the Light of Christ in our
lives, that the light of Christ radiates more brightly
in the world. The message of the resurrection of
our Lord Jesus Christ becomes more powerful and
more believable through our lives. We become
heralds of the Risen Lord, beacons of resurrection light, and messengers of the Good News. The
Resurrection bestows illumination, transfiguration,
brings forgiveness, and gives joy.
Christ has risen! We are forgiven! Christ has
risen! We are a people of Hope. Christ “was handed
over for our transgressions and was raised for our
justification” (Romans 4:25). The new life which our
Risen Lord and Savior gave us must translate into our
actions. We are called by the resurrection of the Lord
to always choose life and reject the sin.
Μέσα στην εποχή της ανοίξεως εορτάζουμε την άνοιξη
της ζωής, που συνδέεται με την Ανάσταση του Χριστού που
είναι το πιο γλυκό ορόσημο της ιστορίας της ανθρωπότητος,
αλλά και η πίστη και η ζωή των αληθινών Χριστιανών. Ο Άγιος
Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος περιγράφει το πνεύμα τής μεγάλης
γιορτής του Πάσχα: Λαμπρή πανήγυρις, χαρά τού Θεού,
συμπόσιο τής πίστεως, πλούτος τής χρηστότητος, νίκη κατά
τού θανάτου. Ανάσταση, που σημαίνει αιώνια ζωή. Πάσχα,
που σημαίνει σωτήριο πέρασμα. Διάβαση «εκ θανάτου πρός
ζωήν, καί εκ γής πρός ουρανόν». Λαμπρή, που σημαίνει άπλετο φώς. Διακαινίσιμος, που σημαίνει ανακαίνιση τών πάντων.
Αγάπη, που σημαίνει συμφιλίωση καί συγχώρηση.
Η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία είναι και λέγεται Εκκλησία
Αναστάσεως, γιατί ο Χριστός με την Ανάστασή Του νίκησε
τον θάνατο και έδωσε την βεβαιότητα σε όλους μας ότι θα
νικήσουμε και εμείς εν Χριστώ τον θάνατο και θα γευθούμε την
Ανάσταση. Είναι σημαντικός ο λόγος του Αποστόλου Παύλου
προς τους Χριστιανούς της Κορίνθου: “ει δε Χριστός ουκ εγήγερται, κενόν άρα το κήρυγμα ημών, κενή δε και η πίστις υμών...
ματαία η πίστις υμών” (Α’ Κορ. ιε΄, 14, 17).
Είναι Εκκλησία της Αναστάσεως γιατί στηρίζεται
περισσότερο στην Ανάσταση του Χριστού, που είναι συνέχεια
της σταυρικής Του θυσίας. H κεφαλή της Εκκλησίας είναι ο
αναστημένος Χριστός που με την Ανάστασή Του νίκησε το
κράτος του θανάτου. Η Εκκλησία είναι το αναστημένο Σώμα του
Χριστού.
Είναι Εκκλησία της Αναστάσεως γιατί το ακατάπαυστο
κήρυγμά της είναι το μυστήριο της Αναστάσεως, δηλαδή και
της ψυχικής Αναστάσεως, με την νέκρωση της αμαρτίας και
την απαλλαγή από τα πάθη, και της σωματικής Αναστάσεως
με την μελλοντική Ανάσταση των σωμάτων.
Είναι Εκκλησία της Αναστάσεως, γιατί εορτάζει
λαμπρώς την εορτή της Αναστάσεως του Χριστού, που
είναι η μεγαλύτερη εορτή της Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας.
Προετοιμαζόμαστε σαράντα μέρες για να την εορτάσουμε
πνευματικά, και όταν έρχεται η εορτή του Πάσχα την πανηγυρίζουμε λαμπρότατα, με αναμένες λαμπάδες, με το “Χριστός
Ανέστη”, με την αναστάσιμη θεία Λειτουργία, με την κοινωνία
του Σώματος και του Αίματος του Χριστού, με την εξωτερική
χαρά και με την όλη πανηγυρική ατμόσφαιρα. Εορτάζουμε την
έλευση της νέας ζωής που έφερε στον κόσμο ο Χριστός.

information about the whereabouts of
George J. Xiridakis from Imvros, Sfakia,
Crete. It stated that eighteen years
ago he lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The inquiry is regarding a $1,000
savings account at Mellon National
Bank. If no information is forthcoming,
the money will be forfeited to the state
of Pennsylvania. The Arkadi Chapter
of Pittsburgh was to be contacted for
information about Mr. Xiridakis.

As the youngest of three children,
and younger cousin in a large Cretan
“soi”, Andrew always had the support
and guidance of his family and friends.
From the age of seven, Andrew began
his involvement in the Pancretan Association as a member of his local chapter’s (Omonoia) “mikro horeftiko”, even
performing at the 1980 PAA National
Convention in New York City. In subsequent years, Andrew had the fortune
of taking part in the PAA’s annual dance
competitions in Clearwater, FL (1984),
Denver, CO (1986), and Boston, MA
(1988), and winning 1st Place with his
“Labrys” youth dance troupe. In the
summer of 1989, as President of his local youth chapter, the “Labrys” dancers
toured and performed on the island of
Crete to critical acclaim.
At the 1990 National Convention in
Anaheim, CA, Andrew was voted into
national office as the East Coast Vice
President, under the administration of
Gregory Pappas. For the next several
years, Andrew assisted Greg in working for more youth structured events
at national conventions, increasing PYA
membership across the US and Canada,
and organizing the PYA Odyssey to
Crete.
Riding a wave of enthusiasm, Andrew took the office of PYA President in
1992 at the PAA Convention in Chicago,
IL. In order to involve the growing
membership, Andrew and his executive
committee made Constitutional changes that altered the structure of the
organization; constructing a hierarchy
similar to that of the PAA, with a 1st,
2nd, 3rd, and 4th Vice President. This
enabled two of the PYA’s new Canadian
members (George Ikonomakis, 2nd VP
and Zambia Delidakis, Treasurer) to be-
come part of the organization’s growth.
The PYA Odyssey, originally scheduled to take place in 1991, fulfilled its
promise of getting “back to our roots”,
with a successful two-week adventure in the summer of 1993. Andrew
and PAA President, George Tzitzikas
escorted many of the organization’s
PYA and PAA members through Crete,
as we experienced the sights, sounds,
history and filoxenia of our beautiful
homeland. Compli­menting the already
wonderful Odyssey program, Andrew
was also able to be a part of an incredible ensemble of PYA dancers and singers (led by Dr. Mary Coros) that toured
and performed at many of the trip’s
highlighted destinations.
As part of the second half of his
wedding honeymoon in 1994, Andrew was sworn into a second term
as President, at the Miami National
Convention. This time, Andrew and
his new executive committee worked
tirelessly to bridge the gap of our older
and younger youth members, hoping
to keep both involved in our parent
and youth organizations. The addition
of the PAA’s Task Force 2000 and more
nationally sponsored youth events,
helped pass the baton to a new generation, and administration, at Modesto,
CA in 1995.
As important and rewarding as his
accomplishments were, Andrew states
that his greatest legacy in this organization should be the friendships, relationships, and lasting memories that were
formed. His most prized friendships
came as a result of his involvement
in the Pancretan Association, including meeting his wife Dena at the 1988
Boston National Convention.
Today, Andrew and Dena live in
New York with their two amazing
children, Evangelina Kyriaki (8½) and
Emanuel Andrew (6 1/2). Everyone
is happily involved in their local PAA
chapter: Andrew, along with his longtime friend and fellow “Labrys” dance
mate, John Kiousenterlis, help organize the dance instruction for all of
Omonoia’s dance groups and general
membership; Dena is involved in the
Pasiphae woman’s chapter; while Evangelina and Mano are proud participants
and future members of the horeftiko!

HISTORY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF
“LABRYS” YOUTH CHAPTER

At the July, 1948 National Conference of the Pancretan
Association of America (PAA) held in Pittsburgh, PA, President Nick Kalmer (Kalimerakis) appointed a committee of
young men and women to initiate the organizing of their
own national chapters.
The appointed officers in Pittsburgh were headed by
the chairperson, Mr. Mike Pavlakis of Denver, CO. They
planned for a meeting to present to special youth delegates,
programs and activities, as well as necessary tools and
guides. These aids were to assist in setting up chapters in
their respective communities. The national level conference
was planned for March 5-6, 1949 in Chicago, IL. The many
special delegates arrived from thirteen states; their New
York appointed delegate did not attend this Pancretan Youth
Organization event.
Youth chapters in New York existed under the auspices
of “OMONOIA”, the PAA chapter since the later 1930’s. The
“Sons of Crete” was a multi-member and successful, vibrant
chapter with an outstanding sport team, but disbanded when
the call-of-duty summoned, and was not reinstated after the
war. The co-existing “Daughters of Crete” (of which I was a
recent member) was viable, and noted for their dance group.
Two weeks prior to the conference, my beloved brother
Emmanuel’s wedding took place in Chicago. Much talk was
heard about the anticipated PYO Youth Conference. Two of
the outstanding people of the conference were in the wedding party, Mike Svourakis, Treasurer and John Volakakis,
Executive Secretary. Together they were intent in informing
me of the significance of the event, its purpose, but they
also were extricating information about the New York youth
scene. Before I left, I was appointed Associate Area Representative with a task to perform.

New York youth chapter. I was appointed the Area Representative as the former designated person with that title
proved inactive at this point. The urgency was explained, as
a National Conference was planned in July to elect the PYO
officers by chapter delegates.

charter of the new chapter.
The results of the elections of the officers were as follows:

Board Members were Frances Bolakas, Tessie Anifantakis, Effie (Calivas) Papjiannakis, Mark S. Sakellariou, and Gus
C. Papajiannakis.
The chapter was given the name “LABRYS”. I had submitted this name along with other names, as had other members, but I was praying “LABRYS” would be the one voted by
the members. I was very much elated when it was chosen.
“LABRYS” Is Chartered
Thanks to a solid and forceful foundation in its first year,
the PYA “LABRYS” chapter of New York has been perpetuated
for the past fifty-four years, and shall continue into the future.
My sincerest wishes are for “LABRYS” to continue in the path
of great achievements and to undertake meaningful projects.
I presented the concept of the PYO to the “Daughters of
Crete.” It was spring and the time of their annual elections.
They agreed to support the plan and elected me as President of the “Daughters of Crete” to conduct the reorganiza-

“LABRYS” The First Year
In a very brief time, the energetic committees of
“LABRYS” had accomplished great feats in preparation to
attend the first National PYO Conference in Chicago, over
the 4th of July week in 1949. “LABRYS” now was a chartered
chapter; had elected its delegates; voted on the name of its
chapter; and ratified its constitution. The memorable conference was most inspiring and enjoyable to all who attended.
All were promising to meet again next year at the Second
National Conference to be held in Akron, Ohio.
An extremely active program was pursued the first two
years with a very capable Executive Board and resourceful
membership committees working on national level projects.
One committee published a collection of Cretan Poetry
“Mantinades”. Our dance group continued to delight all.
Regional conferences held in New York at the St. Moritz
Hotel were very successful as were those held at Boston and
Springfield, Massachusetts.
“LABRYS” donated to philanthropic causes. Our first
Annual Dance was May 25, 1950 at the Cafe Rouge, Hotel
Statler. Monthly meetings where proceeded by lectures on
Cretan subjects; group visits to museums, house parties,
outdoor events, beach parties, boat rides up the Hudson,
and bowling.

Την Κυριακή 20 Μαρτίου 2011 η Μικτή Εκπαιδευτική
Επιτροπή τίμησε μνήμη του Εθνάρχη Ελευθερίου Βενιζέλου.
Η επιμνημόσυνη δέηση έγινε στον Άγιο Δημήτριο της
Αστόριας και η ομιλία δόθηκε στο Κρητικό Σπίτι. Την
ομιλία έδωσε ο Δεύτερος Αντιπρόεδρος της Παγκρητικής
Ένωσης Αμερικής και Πρώην Πρόεδρος της «Ομόνοιας» κ.
Νίκος Καστρινάκης αντικαθιστώντας τον κ. Δαμασκηνάκη
που ήταν αδύνατο να παρευρεθεί λόγο ασθένειας.
Ο κ. Καστρινάκης με την βοήθεια οπτικοακουστικών
μέσων ανέλυσε τους κύριους σταθμούς της ζωής
και της προσφοράς του Εθνάρχη και αναφέρθηκε σε
συμπεράσματα και διδάγματα που αντλούνται από αυτές
και είναι ακόμα επίκαιρα.
Στα πλαίσια τον εκδηλώσεων για την Εθνική μας παρέλαση
το Σάββατο 26 Μαρτίου διοργανώθηκε στο Κρητικό Σπίτι η
παρουσίαση των χορευτικών συγκροτημάτων της ευρύτερης
περιοχής της Νέας Υόρκης. Την ευθύνη του συντονισμού
είχε ο πρώην Πρόεδρος της «Ομόνοιας» κ. Κυριάκος
Μαραγκουδάκης. Στην εκδήλωσε που κράτησε από το πρωί
μέχρι το βράδυ πήραν μέρος περίπου τριάντα χορευτικά,
παρευρέθηκε ο Υπουργός Προστασίας του Πολίτη κ. Χρήστος
Παπουτσής καθώς και οι Εύζωνες.
Μεγάλη τιμή για το Κρητικό Σπίτι ήταν η επίσημη
επίσκεψη του Υπουργού Προστασίας του Πολίτη της
Ελλάδος κ. Χρήστου Παπουτσή που αντιπροσώπευσε
την Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση στις εκδηλώσεις για την Εθνική
Παρέλαση της 5ης Λεωφόρου στην Νέα Υόρκη. Στην
εκδήλωση που έγινε αμέσως μετά από την μεγαλειώδη
παρέλαση του Ελληνισμού την Κυριακή 27 Μαρτίου
2011 παραβρέθηκαν επίσης το Άγημα των Ευζώνων,
η Γενική Πρόξενος της Ελλάδος στην Νέα Υόρκη κ Άγη
Μπαλτά, Ο Διευθυντής Δίωξης Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος
Συνταγματάρχης κ. Μάνος Σφακιανάκης καθώς και
ο Στρατιωτικός ακόλουθος του Γενικού Προξενείου
Συνταγματάρχης κ. Χρήστος Μεσσαριτζίδης. Ο κ. υπουργός
αναφέρθηκε κατά την ομιλία του με θερμά λόγια για την
Ομογένεια της Αμερικής καθώς και στις προκλήσεις που
έχει να αντιμετωπίσει η Ελλάδα σήμερα. Τον υπουργό
προλόγισε ο Δεύτερος Αντιπρόεδρος της Παγκρητικής
Ένωσης Αμερικής και Πρώην Πρόεδρος της «Ομόνοιας» κ.
Νίκος Καστρινάκης. Την εκδήλωση τίμησαν με την παρουσία
τους η Εκτελεστική Διευθύντρια γυναικείων τμημάτων

Thanksgiving weekend dinner dance from near and far, again
making this event very successful. Special thanks to Mike
Detorakis of Akron who was instrumental in booking the
renowned musicians from Crete, Giorgios Vogiatizis, Lyra;
Yannis Katakis and Giorgios Pulakas, Laouto. Many thanks
to our Executive Caterers, Steve and Irene Nikolakis who
prepared the most delectable prime rib dinner along with
all the trimmings and the Αρβί βραστό με πιλάφι for the
midnight snack. Thanks to all the ladies of our association
who baked those scrumptious delicacies enjoyed by all. The
excellent Cretan musicians played our beloved Cretan music
for dancing into the wee hours of the morning.

George Varouh Cretan Club
Thanksgiving Dinner Dance
On behalf of the officers, board of directors and the
Condolences
Members of the Cretan Club of Cleveland were deeply
saddened to hear of the untimely death of a long-time member and officer, Andy Regan. Andy and his wife Maria were
preparing to leave for their annual vacation to Florida. On
Friday, Feb 25, while packing the auto, Andy suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 78. He was a devout member
of the St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church in North Royalton
where he had served as a parish council member, financial
Secretary and in other related capacities. Andy, along with
his wife Maria, was a chairperson of the Seniors Organization of St. Paul Church. Many of our parishioners enjoyed
the various activities that were planned by them and their
committee members. He also was co-chair of our annual
festival at St. Paul for many years. Andy served the Cretan
Club with much eagerness, not because he was of Cretan descent, but because of Maria’s Cretan heritage. What a wonderful, giving person. His services at St. Paul Church and the
Cretan Club were unending and his dedication tremendous.
Whatever needed to be done at church or the club, Andy
was right there, always ready to pitch in and do what was
needed. He was a member of the Cretan Board of Directors
for many years and then elected to the office of vice president, which he served loyally. He was a member of AHEPA
and the American Legion Hellenic Post 453, having served
in the Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict. He meant
so much to so many. Andy had a wonderful sense of humor
and a great smile. He loved everyone he came in touch with
and everyone loved him. Andy will be terribly missed by all
at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church as well as the George
Varouh Cretan Club of Cleveland. Memory eternal, Andy.
Andy is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Maria. He
was the loving father of Andrea Ljubi (Randy deceased) and
William (Susan) Regan, and proud grandfather of Nicholas,
Steven and Victoria Ljubi. His proudest moments were seeing his grandchildren win many awards during swimming
meets at their various school levels. Two brothers, Sam (Jay)

and Peter, also survive. Fr. Costas Keares and Fr. John Loijos
officiated his funeral. Multitudes of relatives and friends
thronged St Paul’s Church to pay their respects. May God
grant him eternal rest in Paradise where there is no pain or
suffering but life everlasting.
Elections
Elections were held Sunday, March 13, 2011. Newly
elected officers: President Paul Manos, Vice-President Ari
Varouh, Recording Secretary Lucky Varouh, Corresponding
Secretary Sophia Loizos, Treasurer Rae Elliott. Five newly
elected Board Members for a two-year term are: Vasilios
Mavrakis, John Verikakis, Andy Rokakis, Ronald Varouh, Curtis Varouh and Former President George Hohlakis. They join
the existing board members who will serve another year: Liz
Hohlakis, Maria Regan, Sophie Tetorakis, Nancy Andos and
Sandy Varouh. All newly elected officers and board members, along with the existing board members, are committed
to making 2011 a year of continuing growth.
Picnic
Our annual traditional July 4th picnic will be held on
Monday July 4th, 2011, at St. Sava’s Picnic Grove on Wallings
Road in North Royalton. We invite all friends from near and
far to attend this gala event. Mark your calendars and join
in the fun!

Pseloretes
On New Years Eve of 2011, we were proud to have live
music from Crete by Andrea Lilikakis. Our Chairman for
the evening was Dimitri Matsamakis, with Co-Chairman,
Konstantinos Katakis. The event was great and we welcomed
2011 ‘til early in the morning. Our 4th District Governor,
Niko Verikakis, with his wife Despina attended the event.
January 14th in Detroit, Michigan, we had the 2011
Winter Youth Conference, which hosted by the Detroit Levendoyenna Pancretan Youth. Numerous youth from across
the country, as
well as youth from
Montreal and
Toronto, attended. We had the
pleasure to have
with us also at the
welcome night the
PAA Board and
President Ted Manousakis . The welcome night took place
at Pseloretes Lesxi with live music from Crete, Maggelakis

and his band .
The next day,

15th, was the
start of the PAA
Board meeting,
along with events
of the PYA conference being held.
All the events
of the morning
and afternoon
gave way to the Detroit Pseloretes Annual Dance. Chairman
of the event was Konstantinos Katakis with Co-Chairman,
Gianni Marakis. The dance was phenomenal and the event
kept going ‘til early morning hours. All distinguished guests
and youth had a great time.

people from out of town as a thank you for attending our
events.
On Sunday, Feburary 20th, the Cretan ladies of “Pseloretes “ under the leadership of Maria Marakis, held a cooking lesson event at the lesxi for making Sfakiana paksimadia.
Several ladies from surrounding states and Canada attended
the event.
On March
6th, we had
our first annual
general meeting.
The president of
Pseloretes, Konstantinos Katakis, thanked the
co-chairman, Gianni Marakis, the Pseloretes ladies, George
Marakis, and the dance teachers, Gianni Marakis, Bobby
Markakis, and Matina Legakis, for their efforts in making all
these events a reality. Also he thanked the President of PAA,
Ted Manousakis, as well as Vice President John Manos, for
the help and guidance that they showed to Pseloretes and

Detroit. He also especially thanked President of the PYA,
Eleni Sopasis, for allowing Detroit the honor of hosting the
Winter 2011 PYA Conference.

Congratulations to Nick and Niki Kasotakis on the christening of their daughter Katerina Kasotakis on March 5th,
2011 at St. John the Baptist Church in Sterling Heights. The

Congratulations to Stephanie Ligerakis on successfully
passing her last set of the NBDE (National Board of Dentistry Exam) Part II and the NERB (Northeast Regional Board).
She graduates from dental school in May and in June will be
starting a 1 year GPR (General Practice Residency) at Miami
Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
We wish her all the best.

Libby Aretakis Sideriadis, PhD, recently completed
her doctoral degree at the School
of Social Work, University of Connecticut. Her research focused
on the implementation of various
interventions that improve students’
school behavior and increase academic performance. Libby teaches
at the University of Connecticut and
is also employed as a school social
worker. Libby, our chapter treasurer, is one of the founding
members of the Cretans of Connecticut, E. Venizelos Chapter, and has held various office positions. Congratulations,

In Sympathy
It is with heartfelt sympathy and love that we regret to
inform of the unexpected passing
of George E. Bonatsakis, grandson
of George and Kallie Bonatsakis of
Newington, CT. He passed away
in Rhodes, Greece, on February 7,
2011, at the age of 32, in the home
of his mother, Mika Bonatsakis.
George was born on March 29,
1979, in Hartford, CT. He graduated
from Newington High School and
from the Porter and Chester Institute with a degree in industrial mechanics. He was predeceased by his father, Emmanuel Bonatsakis, and leaves his mother, Mika Bonatsakis of
Rhodes, and his brother, Demetris Bonatsakis of Newington,
CT. He also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends
both in the States, Crete and Rhodes, including his first
cousin Rose Bonatsakis Vouthounes, Vice-President of our
Chapter, her father, Spiros Bonatsakis of Crete, former Present of our Chapter, and Nick Bonatsakis, brother of George

Bonatsakis, grandfather of George. He will be deeply
missed. He is now in eternal peace with our Good Lord.
Vasilopita Celebration

Dinner Dance and the
Cutting of the Vasilopita at The Nutmeg

Windsor, Connecticut,

We were honored to
have our District Governor, Demitris Hatzis,
join us for this event,
as well as the Godfather of our Chapter,
Nick Stavarakis, and
other PAA members
from Springfield. We were entertained by the highly talented young men from Springfield, Stamatis Moraitakis (lyra)
Nikos Hatzis (laouto), Spyros Doulakis (guitar), and Dino
Dourountoudakis (bass) who sang traditional Cretan songs
including syrto, pentozali, malevizioti, rizitika, and kalamatiana, as well as other tragoudia. We would like to thank
them for their most enjoyable music. This year we selected
Despina Spyros for our Member of the Year Award, which
was presented by Nick Stavarakis. Despina was recognized
as being a long-standing, loyal and hard-working member
of our chapter who has assumed many duties, including
Membership Chair and Festival Baking Chair. She has tremendous passion for the Cretan culture and traditions. The
lucky members who received coins in their Vasilopites were:

in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I’m studying as an undergraduate for a Bachelor’s degree in Biology
and thereafter for a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy.
I also work at an Aegean bistro in the Design District of Miami. I am a proud and active Cretan whether on the island
or abroad, keeping the culture a part of me anywhere I go.
From the history of our earliest Minoans to modern day Cretan hospitality, I am sincerely grateful. I proudly represent
and exemplify the beautiful traditions that I was raised by,
through the arts of music and dance, to authentic cuisines

Vassiliki Papastavros
Christopher Chryssis Scholarship
Vassiliki Papastavros is a junior in the Honors Program
at the University of Florida, majoring in Anthropology and minoring in
Modern Greek Studies. She is involved
in many organizations on campus,
including UF Habitat for Humanity,
Alpha Epsilon Delta Honors Society,
American Pre-Medical Student Association, and Collegiate Health Service
Corps. Vassiliki is a research assistant
at the UF Genetics Institute, studying molecular anthropology and population genetics, and is an undergraduate teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry. She plans to
attend medical school to pursue a career in medicine.

families have roots in Chania, Crete and are very active in the
Cretan community. Eleni is a physician’s assistant in dermatology in Boca Raton and Yianni is operations manager for
an industrial diamond company. Eleni and Yianni, along with
their family, look forward to celebrating the couple’s wedding
in September 2011. We wish them Kala Stefana!
Get Well Wishes

Condolences
It is with a heavy heart that we post the passing of
Konstantinos “Kostas” Albanis, father of our silogo president, Katerina Albanis-Theodorou. Kosta touched the lives
of many people in the community and the silogo and is
remembered with great love and admiration. We extend
our deepest sympathies, love and prayers to his wife Angela,
mother-in-law Maria Sotiriou, and daughters Katerina and
Maria, as friends and members of our silogo family. May his
memory be eternal.
The silogo sent condolences to the family Themi and
Angela Tsakirakis for the passing of Angela’s father, Yiannis
Monovouzi. We extend our sincerest sympathies to these
families. May his memory be eternal.

MATHEOS MIHAIL THYMAKIS DEC 19, 1937 - SEP 15,
2010 Matthew passed away
among family and friends on
Wednesday, September 15,
2010 at Doctors Hospital,
he was 72. He was born in
Embrosneros, a small village in
Hania, Crete, Greece, to Sofia
and Mihail Thymakis. After the
death of his brother Anthony,
Matthew moved to Sydney,
Australia, where he lived for
17 years. In Sydney he learned
furniture and cabinet making
which took him to New York. On a trip to Modesto for the
wedding of Olympia and Mihali Stathoudakis, he met and
later married his wife Argie (Kantelaris). Shortly after moving to Modesto with his son, from a previous marriage, and
getting married, he opened Matthew’s Custom Cabinets on
Scenic Drive, which he owned for 18 years. Matthew was
also employed by Tri-Valley Growers which is now Seneca.
He worked as a mechanic and forklift driver for 29 years.
Matthew was a man of conviction and passion in whatever
he believed was right. Possessing great faith in God, he was

a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Modesto. Putting his trust in God, Matthew was very
spiritual knowing Who controlled our destiny. Proud of his
Cretan heritage, Matthew would proudly wear the traditional Cretan garb consisting of a black shirt, gilota, sariki,
and stivania whenever the opportunity availed itself. As a
member of the local Cretan organization, Lefka Oree, Matthew understood the importance of preserving his cultural
heritage. He is survived by his wife Argie, son Anthony,
daughter Sophia and granddaughter Athena, sisters Erini
Stathoudakis (Nick) and Eleni Vamianakis (Manoli) and four
nieces and nephews. May his memory be eternal.

Στις 18 Ιανουαρίου, 2011, γεννήθηκε ένα
πανέμορφο αγοράκι, ο Γεώργιος
Αμπαδιωτάκης. Ο Γεώργιος είναι
ο γιός της κυρίας Σοφίας και
κυρίου Ιωάννη Αμπαδιωτάκη
και η εγγονή του κυρίου και
κυρίας Γεωργίου και Βαρβάρας
Αμπαδιωτάκη όπως και του
κυρίου και κυρίας Στρατή και
Γαριφαλιάς Κριαρά. Ο πρόεδρος
και το διοικητικό συμβούλιο του
συλλόγου εύχονται ολόψυχα στην

Σπουδαία Ενημερωτική Ιατρική Παρουσίαση
«Η Υγεία της Καρδιάς»
Ο σύλλογός μας στα πλαίσια ενημέρωσης των μελών
του και γενικά της παροικίας, οργανώνει την Τρίτη 12
Απριλίου στις 7 το βράδυ στο «Κρητικό Σπίτι», μια πολύ
σημαντική ιατρική παρουσίαση αφιερωμένη στην «Υγεία της
Καρδιάς ». Η παρουσίαση/ομιλία θα γίνει στα Ελληνικά και
Αγγλικά, από ομάδα γνωστών Ελλήνων ιατρών που έχουν
διαπρέψει στον κλάδο της καρδιολογίας, αυτοί είναι ο Δρ.
Ηλίας Ηλιάδης, MD, FACC, Associate Director Catch laboratories, Cooper University Hospital και ο Δρ. Απόστολος
Βουντούρης, MD Cardiology/ Electrophysiology Assistant Professor, UMDNJ. Είναι μια πάρα πολύ σπουδαία και σπάνια
παρουσίαση στην παροικία μας την οποία δεν θα πρέπει να
χάσει κανένας όταν μάλιστα γνωρίζομε ότι ο υπ’ αριθμόν
ένας λόγος θνησιμότητας ανδρών και γυναικών είναι η
«καρδιά». Μετά το τέλος της παρουσίασης θα ακολουθήσει

Στις 29 Ιανουαρίου, 2011 φιλοξενήσαμε τους Συνέδρους
της Πρώτης Περιφέρειας και εν συνεχεία είχαμε μία
εξαίρετη Κρητική βραδιά στη Λέσχη του Συλλόγου μας. Μας
τίμησαν ο Πρόεδρος της Π.Ε.Α κ. Θεόδωρος Μανουσάκης
μαζί με τις αδελφές του Μαρία με τον σύζυγό της και
Κατίνα με τον γιό της Κώστα και τον σύζυγό της. Επίσης
παρευρέθη ο πρώτος Αντιπρόεδρος της Π.Ε.Α κ. Γιάννης
Μάνος με την σύζυγό του ¨Έλενα. Από την Νέα Υόρκη
παρευρέθη η κ. Μαρία Στρατουδάκη, επόπτρια των
γυναικείων τμημάτων της Π.Ε.Α με τον γιό της Γιάννη, και
η Πρόεδρος της νεολαίας δ. Ελένη Σωπασή, ο κ. Κώστας
Τραβαγιάκης και ο κ. Μιχάλης Τερζάκης με την σύζυγό
του από την Βοστώνη, ο κ. Δημήτρης Ματθαίος και ο κ.
Χρίστος Λιραντωνάκης από το Λόουελ, καθώς και από
το Τορόντο του Καναδά ο κ. Γιώργος Κλουβιδάκης και ο
παραδοσιακός νέος Νίκος Σιρμάλης. Όλους τους ανωτέρω
τους ευχαριστούμε ιδιαίτερα για την τιμή που μας έκαναν.
Η τριάδα των εν Κρήτη καλλιτεχνών Αντωνίου Μαρτσάκη
βιολί, τραγούδι και λαγούτο Νικος φαραντάκης και
Κλωστράκης, μας διασκέδασαν μέχρι τις τρείς το πρωί όπως
συνήθως στις Κρητικές βραδιές του Συλλόγου μας.
Το Σάββατο 5 Φεβρουαρίου τελέστη η βάπτισης της
κορούλας του κ. και κ. Παναγιώτη και Γιάννα Καντανολέων.
Ανάδοχοι ήταν ο κ. και κ. Ηλίας και Ελένη Μπουζάκη.
Στην νεοφώτιστη εδόθη το όνομα Χρυσή. Επακολούθησε
παραδοσιακό τραπέζι στη λέσχη του Συλλόγου μας, με το
συγκρότημα του κ. Αντώνη Μαρτσάκη. Οι προσκεκλημένοι
περί των 220 πέρασαν μια υπέροχη βραδιά. Ευχόμαστε
στους γονείς να τους ζήσει η νεοφώτιστος Χρυσή , στον
Παππού και Γιαγιά Γιώργο και Ελένη Παπαδάκη να τους ζήσει
η εγγονούλα και να την καμαρώσουν και νυφούλα. Στους
ανάδοχους Ηλία και Ελένη πάντα άξιοι και πάντα σε τέτοιες
χαρές και να τους ζήσει η βαφτισιμιά τους και ότι επιθυμούν.

Cretan Ladies “Proodos”
Στις 25 Οκτωβρίου, 2010 ο σύλλογος μας είχε
“ Membership Appreciation Event and New Member Drive” με “ Manicure, Massage and Martini” εις
το Delany House. Τιμήσαμε όλα τα μέλη μας για τις
πολλαπλές υπηρεσίες όπου απλόχερα προσφέρουν
για την πρόοδο και ευημερία του συλλόγου μας.
Ευχαριστούμε τις υπεύθυνες Μαρία Τσιτσιρίδη και Ρούμπη
Περάκη για ένα αξέχαστο απόγευμα.
Το Σάββατο 11 Δεκεμβρίου, 2010 παραθέσαμε
εις την αίθουσα του συλλόγου μας το ετήσιο παιδικό
Χριστουγεννιάτικο πάρτι. Οι υπεύθυνες κυρίες Μαίρη
Περάκη, Μαρία Τσιτσιρίδη και Άλισον Μπουζάκη,
φρόντισαν και τα παιδιά μας πέρασαν ένα πολύ όμορφο
πρωινό γεμάτο από μουσική, παιχνίδια, ζωγραφική και
φαγητό. Τα επισκέφτηκε και ο Άγιος Βασίλης με πλούσια
δώρα. Ευχαριστούμε τον κ. Στέλιο Περάκη που έπαιξε τον
ρόλο του Αγίου Βασίλη.
Την Κυριακή 12 Δεκεμβρίου είχαμε Γενική Συνέλευση και
εκλογές. Πρόεδρος - Ευαγγελία Παπαμαρκάκη, Αντιπρόεδρος
- Γεωργία Ντουλάκη, Γραμματέας Πρακτικών - Μαίρη Περάκη,
Γραμματέας Αλληλογραφίας - Τίνα Κατσουνάκη, Ταμείας Μαρία Τσιτσιρίδη. Σύμβουλοι: Γεωργία Μαλανδράκη, Μπέση
Μαβρεδάκη, Ρούμπη Περάκη, Αλεξάνδρα Schoolcraft, Χριστίνα
Stebbins, Μαρία Τζαμπαζάκη.
Αμέσως μετά από την γενική είχαμε το ετήσιο
Χριστουγεννιάτικο πάρτι των κυριών. Προσφέρθηκαν
μεζέδες, ποτά, γλυκίσματα και δώρα, όπου ήταν δωρεά
των κυρίων του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου. Ευχαριστούμε τις
υπεύθυνες κυρίες Μπέση Μαβρεδάκη, Χριστίνα Stebbins,
Ρούμπη Περάκη καθώς και όλες τις κυρίες για τις δωρεές
και την βοήθειά τους.
Επίσης το Σάββατο 18 Δεκεμβρίου είχαμε οικογενειακή
Χριστουγεννιάτικη Βραδιά εις την αίθουσα του συλλόγου
μας. Η αίθουσα ήταν κατάμεστη από μέλη και φίλους. Όλοι
μαζί περάσαμε μία ωραία βραδιά.
Στις 7 Μαρτίου, 2011 γιορτάσαμε την Καθαρή Δευτέρα. Η
αίθουσα του συλλόγου μας ήταν κατάμεστη από μέλη και φίλους
μας. Εκατό και πλέον άτομα γευτήκαμε σαρακοστινά φαγητά και
λιχουδιές. Ευχαριστούμε τις υπεύθυνες δ. Γεωργία Μαλανδράκη
και κ. Γεωργία Ντουλάκη. Ευχόμεθα καλή Σαρακοστή σε όλους.

Χάρισον και Βασιλική Κουράκος και στις οικογένειές τους.
Αιωνία να είναι η μνήμη της και ο Θεός να την αναπαύσει.

και στην οικογένειά της για τον θάνατο της μητέρας της,
