Νέα Πρωτοβουλία “PAA 300”
Κατά την διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης
η Παγκρητική
ανακοίνωσε τη δωρεά μεγάλης ποσότητας υγειονομικού
αναλώσιμου υλικού, αξίας 300.000 δολαρίων στην 7η
Υγειονομική Περιφέρεια Κρήτης και θα διανεμηθεί σε όλα
τα νοσοκομεία και στα Κέντρα Υγείας της Κρήτης.
Ακόμη οι εκπρόσωποι της ανέφεραν ότι συγκεντρώθηκαν
και μετέφεραν στην Εκκλησία της Κρήτης περίπου 30.000
δολάρια και αυτές τις ημέρες θα διαθέσουν αλλά 80.000
δολάρια σε διάφορα ιδρύματα της Κρήτης Μάλιστα κατά
την εκδήλωση προσφερθήκαν επιταγές συνολικού ύψους
21.000 δολαρίων για την Εκκλησία της Κρήτης το Παιδικό
χωριό SOS την Ηλιαχτίδα και τον Πολιτιστικό σύλλογο του
Αγίου Μύρωνα.

Μεγάλη εντύπωση άφησε η δωρεά των κ.κ. Σημαντήρη,
Βελιβασάκη, Μανουκαράκη και Μπελαδάκη που
ήταν1.000$ προς το Πολιτιστικό Σύλλογο και μια όμορφη
μεγάλη πλάκα από γρανίτη, πάνω στην οποία απεικονίζεται
ο Ν. Καλημεράκης και το σήμα της Παγκρητικής,
τοποθετημένα σε μια ειδική ξύλινη προθήκη. Επίσης
μοιράσθηκε στους παρευρεθέντες ένα προσεγμένο λεύκωμα
για τον Ν. Καλημεράκη και την εκδήλωση. Στο εξώφυλλο
υπάρχει επικολλημένο ειδικό αναμνηστικό γραμματόσημο
που εκδόθηκε από τα ΕΛΤΑ προς τιμήν της Παγκρητικής
και της εκδήλωσης για τον Ν. Καλημεράκη.
Ο Πρόεδρος του Πολιτιστικού Συλλόγου δώρισε στους
συντελεστές, που τίμησαν την εκδήλωση ένα αντίγραφο του
νομίσματος της αρχαίας Ραύκου και παρέθεσε γεύμα προς
τιμήν τους.

Μεγάλη εντύπωση άφησε η δωρεά των κ.κ. Σημαντήρη,
Βελιβασάκη, Μανουκαράκη και Μπελαδάκη που
ήταν1.000$ προς το Πολιτιστικό Σύλλογο και μια όμορφη
μεγάλη πλάκα από γρανίτη, πάνω στην οποία απεικονίζεται

We Made a Difference in Crete!

e are back home in the states again! As
summer draws to a close, I look back
with great satisfaction on the impact our organization has made in our homeland. During
my second trip to Greece this year, we had the
opportunity to meet with many political and
religious leaders throughout the cities and villages in Crete. We also made scheduled and
unscheduled visits to several key organizations that have been on the receiving end of
the PAA’s and its members’ generosity.
While tourism in general appeared to be less
than in previous years, especially in Athens
and the Peloponnesus, Crete experienced an
increase in visitors, especially after the second
series of elections.
We began our visits with the Metropolitan
in Rethymno, where we discussed the current
needs of the Metropolis. The sisitia and the
idrimata in the area were at capacity and the
assistance from our PAA Relief for Crete program was very much needed.
We continued on to Chania and met several
of our members at the Idrima of Ag. Nektarios. The Metropolitan greeted us there as well
as the local press. The PAA’s donations were
made public in both television news and newspapers. The Cretans there understood and saw
the efforts that our organization had made to
raise these funds and they were very much
appreciative of your donations. The idrima at
Ag. Nektarios has an orphanage that has been
operating for many years. They feed, clothe
and provide a home for children from infancy
through the age of 18. It is truly touching to
see the children there and hear their stories.
After leaving the orphanage, many have returned to help, both physically and financially. At a concert hosted by the Metropolitan
there a few nights before, we were entertained
by local dance groups and also a dance group
from Cyprus that had come to support the
Metropolis. During this concert, the PAA was

publically recognized for its current assistance
and for its moral and financial support over the
years.
After a short trip to Athens, we returned to
the island, this time landing in Heraklion, and
drove to Sitia.
There, we met at the Voulefti’s office with his
family and the Idrima Samarites. They have
more than 700 women members from the area
and their accomplishments over the years have
been incredible! Several of their board, along
with their president, welcomed us and took
us around the city to the various charities that
they founded and now support. They were very
pleased to see us because it has been many
years since anyone from the larger organizations has visited.
Our next stop was in Heraklion, where we
began our day with the Pancretan Endowment
Fund (PEF) meeting at the University of Crete’s
ITE College. It was great to see many of our
members there and all of the university’s pritanis, presidents and many of their professors. I
was impressed when the Pritani of the University shared the rankings of many of the colleges
in the University of Crete and how they rank
with their peers from Europe. Several were at
the top of their peer group!
The PEF presented its donations for the various projects there, after which presentations
were made by several professors on their projects and work over the past few years. This
was followed by a brief tour of their facility,
which was truly amazing. Their laser technology research is cutting edge, and many of the
applications they developed are being used all
over the world. One of their laser technologies
enables users to scan paintings without harming the original artwork to test for authenticity
and hidden layers behind the paint. These “Cretan” lasers are currently being used by museums and universities in England, Italy and the
United States.

Μία από τις τεχνολογίες λέιζερ τούς δίνει τη
δυνατότητα να εξετάζουν λεπτομερώς πίνακες
ζωγραφικής για τον έλεγχο της γνησιότητας και
πιθανόν κατι κρυμμένο πίσω από τα στρώματα του
χρώματος, χωρίς να βλάπτεται το πρωτότυπο έργο
τέχνης. Αυτά τα “Κρητικά” λέιζερ χρησιμοποιούνται
σήμερα από μουσεία και πανεπιστήμια στην Αγγλία,
Ιταλία και Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.
Συναντηθήκαμε επίσης με τους εκπροσώπους του
University Press, το οποίο είναι ένα απο τα έργα που
η ΠΕΑ βοήθησε να ιδρυθει και έχει συνεισφέρει
πάνω από 600.000 δολάρια μέχρι τώρα. Είναι ένα
απίστευτο πρόγραμμα που, αν δεν ειχε βοηθήσει η
ΠΕΑ, πιθανώς και να μήν υπήρχε σήμερα. Είναι ένα
από τα λίγα, αν όχι και το μοναδικό απο τα τμήματα
του Πανεπιστημίου που είναι κερδοφόρα, με εσοδα
από τις εκδόσεις τών πάνω από 300 βιβλίων και
χειρόγραφων τα οποια πωλεί σε όλη την Ελλάδα
και την υπόλοιπη Ευρώπη.
Στο Ηράκλειο, ο εκπρόσωπος μας στην Κρήτη,
ο κ. Ιπποκράτης Μπελαδάκης (στον οποίον ειμαι
καταυποχρεωμένος για τίς απίστευτες υπηρεσίες
που έχει προσφέρει στη ΠΕΑ τά τελευταία χρόνια),
συντόνισε μια εκδήλωση στο Άγιο Μύρωνα, ένα
χωριό λίγο έξω από το Ηράκλειο, γενέτειρα ενός
από τους ιδρυτές και πρώην Προεδρους τής ΠΕΑ,
του αείμνηστου Νίκου Kαλημεράκη. Η εκδήλωση
πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 8 Αυγουστου την ημερα
τής γιορτής του χωριού. Εξαιρετική ευκαιρία για
να αποθέσομε φόρο τιμής σε αυτόν τον σπουδαίο
άνθρωπο για όλα οσα προσέφερε στην ΠΕΑ και στο
αγαπημένο του νησί. Την εκδήλωση παρουσίασαν ο
κ. Νίκος Ψιλάκης και ο κ. Ιπποκράτης Μπελαδάκης.
Αρκετοί αξιωματούχοι, συμπεριλαμβανομένου
του Αρχιεπισκόπου, Βουλευτές, Δήμαρχοι και
τοπικοί ηγέτες, μίλησαν για τον αείμνηστο Νίκο
Kαλημεράκη και τα πολλά επιτεύγματά του. Η
βραδιά ολοκληρώθηκε με τα αποκαλυπτήρια
και παρουσίαση πλάκας στη μνήμη του πρώην
Προέδρου Νίκου Kαλημεράκη, προσφορά του κ.
Ιπποκράτη Μπελαδάκη, των δυο πρώην προέδρων
της PAA κ. Σταύρο Σημαντήρη και κ. Μανώλη
Βεληβασάκη, και απο εμένα εκ μέρους της ΠΕΑ.
Η ετήσια συνάντηση του Παγκοσμίου Συμβουλίου
Κρητών ακολούθησε στο Ρέθυμνο λίγες μέρες
αργότερα. Ο Πρόεδρος, Αντώνης Τσουρδαλάκης,
ήταν εκεί μερικές εβδομάδες πρίν, καθώς εργαζόταν
σέ θέματα που αφορούν τό PSK. Συναντηθήκαμε
πολλές φορές και συζήτησαμε τα διάφορα θέματα τής
ατζέντας του Προέδρου. Η ετήσια αυτή συνάντηση
πήγε πολύ καλά και σημειώθηκε σημαντική πρόοδος
στην προώθηση τού PSK και στους στόχους του. Το
Μήνυμα Προέδρου
επόμενο έτος θά συμπληρωθεί το τρίτο και τελευταίο
έτος της θητείας του σημερινού συμβουλίου. Το
επόμενο συνέδριο έχει προγραμματιστεί για το 2013
και θα πραγματοποιηθεί στα Χανιά. Περισσότερες
πληροφορίες για όσους από εσάς ενδιαφέρονται να
τό παρακολουθήσουν θα ανακοινωθουν μόλις γινουν
γνωστές.
Κατά τήν παραμονή μας στο Ρέθυμνο, συναντηθήκαμε με την τοπική επιτροπή τού MVI όπου
πληροφορηθήκαμε την πρόοδό τους κατά τη διάρκεια
των τελευταίων μηνών. Πολλοί άνθρωποι ήταν παρόντες
και ενθουσιάστηκαν στήν ειδηση τής επιχορήγησης απο
την πολιτεία την οποια περιμέναμε και έμειναν απόλυτα
ικανοποιημένοι με την πρόοδο που έχει σημειωθεί στις
Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες γιά το έργο αυτό.
Το 2009, κατά τη διάρκεια τού Συνεδρίου μας
στην Κρήτη, μάθαμε οτι δημιουργήθηκε μια νέα
εταιρεία για να παρέχει ατμοπλοϊκή συγκοινωνία
από τον Πειραιά προς Ρέθυμνο. Πριν από την
αναχώρησή μας απο το Ρέθυμνο (και τη Κρήτη),
συναντήθηκα με ένα από τα μέλη του διοικητικού
συμβουλίου της εταιρείας για να μάθω νεώτερες
και πιο συγκεκριμμένες πληροφορίες. Το πλοίο είναι
έτοιμο και λειτουργεί, σε καλή κατάσταση, και έχει
αναβαθμιστεί και ανακατασκευαστη. Ζήτησαν τη
βοήθεια και την υποστήριξή μας. Τά δύο πρώτα
χρόνια είναι κρίσιμα και θα μας πλησιάσουν για να
αγοράσομε μετοχές της εταιρείας. Σας παρακαλώ
επικοινωνηστε μαζι μου αν σας ενδιαφέρει να
επενδύσετε και εγώ θα σας φέρω σε επαφή μαζί τους.
Παρ’όλο που τρεξαμε από τη μία πλευρά του
νησιού στην άλλη, αισθανθήκαμε πολύ υπερήφανοι
που εκπροσωπήσαμε την οργάνωση μας. Το έργο των
προκατόχων μας όλα αυτά τα χρόνια είναι εμφανές.
Η ΠΕΑ είναι πολύ σεβαστή και έχει κερδίσει τη φήμη
ως μια οργάνωση η οποια τρέφει βαθιά αγάπη για την
Κρήτη. Το έργο της Επιτροπής του Φιλανθρωπικού
και η γενναιόδωρη συνεισφορά σας στον έρανο
για την «Ανακούφιση τής Κρήτης» ειχε απίστευτο
αντίκτυπο στις οργανώσεις που έλαβαν τίς δωρεές
μας. Η παρουσία μας στην Κρήτη, τόσο η προσωπική
όσο και η οικονομική έχει κάνει τέτοια καλή εντύπωση
στους ανθρώπους που βοηθήθηκαν που θα κρατήσει
για πολύ. Σάς μεταφέρω την ευγνωμοσύνη τους και
τίς θερμές τους ευχές σε όλους σας.
Μπορείτε να κάνετε τη διαφορά!
Τώρα που το καλοκαίρι εχει φθασει στο τέλος του, σας
καλώ να σκεφτείτε να ασχοληθήτε (περισσότερο) με
την ΠΕΑ. Μην κάθεστε στο περιθώριο, γίνετε ενεργά
μέλη και κάνετε τη διαφορά! Βρείτε ένα πρόγραμμα
ή έργο που να σας ενδιαφέρει, ενημερωθείτε για τις
επιτροπές, ζητήστε να στηρίξετε η να προεδρεύσετε
σε μια επιτροπη και χρησιμοποιήστε τό μοναδικό
ταλέντο σας και με το εργο σας κάνετε τη διαφορά!

he PAA was founded to cultivate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Crete and
to empower our members to become effective
and responsible citizens.
This month, we are launching a new program,
the PAA 300, to strengthen our Culture and Education, Philanthropic, and Scholarship funds to
provide each with the resources to develop and
implement programs for our members and deserving groups.
The program represents the 300 brave Cretans who sailed from Crete to Constantinople in
1453 to fight for the freedom of all of Greece.
To become a member of the PAA 300, you
would commit to making a $1,000 donation annually for 10 years. Your donation will then be
equally disbursed to the Culture and Education,
Philanthropic, and Scholarship funds. There is
also the option of completing your commitment
in one lump sum.
By becoming a member of the PAA 300, you
will receive a special pin when you make your
pledge. Once your commitment is met, you will
receive a custom, one-of-a-kind gift to thank you
for your support.
All pledged members will also be recognized
in KPHTH Magazine, on our Pancretan.org website, and at a special event held during our biennial conventions.

How 300 Cretan Sailors
Successfully Defied the entire
Turkish Army in 1453

O
ne of the blockbuster movie hits
of 2007 was the romanticized
version of the classic defense of
Thermopylae against Persian hordes in
480 B.C. by 300 Spartans and their allies
under King Leonidas. Though the movie
“300” has taken liberty with certain
historical facts, distinguished historian
Victor Davis Hanson states that “…300
preserves the spirit of the Thermopylae
story.” Indeed, it has been suggested the
success of the movie is predicated on
the notion of free men fighting heroically
against overwhelming odds in defense of
their country and their freedom.
Two thousand years later at Constantinople in 1453 A.D.,
300 Greeks from Crete were going to exhibit a bravery that
would rival the valor of their Spartan ancestors at Thermopylae. These Cretans successfully defied a vast Turkish army,
and were, in fact, the only Christian force in the siege of
Constantinople that was not defeated by the Turks.
The Ottoman Turks established themselves in Europe
in 1354. The Turks proceeded to crush major Christian attempts to stop their expansion. In 1371 at Maritza a combined Bulgarian-Serbian force was defeated. In 1389, a
massive Turkish attack defeated gallant Serbian resistance
at Kosovo. A combined Hungarian-Romanian army was destroyed at Varna in 1444.
As the Turks expanded through the Balkans and crossed
the Danube River for new conquests, an independent Byzantine held city of Constantinople became more unaccept14

able. Indeed, because of its history “the city” was viewed as the
logical capital of their empire. The Turks unsuccessfully laid
siege to the great city from 1393 to 1395 and in 1422. Though
the Byzantine Empire by this time was reduced to a few hundred square miles around Constantinople and most of the Peloponnese, psychologically having “the city” in Christian hands
was very important for both Christians and Muslims—for obviously different reasons.
The new Turkish sultan Mehmed II assumed the throne in
1451. With Turkish armies ravishing the Balkans and southeastern Europe, Mehmed saw Constantinople as the logical finale to Turkish victories. In February-March 1453, the Sultan
started preparations for a massive assault on Constantinople.
Ultimately, the Turkish force would reach nearly 300,000—including 80,000 regular troops.
As the Turkish preparations for the assault were taking place,
the Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI made appeals for help
throughout Christian Europe. Unfortunately, the number of
fighters sent to help in the city’s defense numbered less than
2,000. Among those warriors were more than 300 sailors from
Crete. The Venetian rulers of Crete enthusiastically encouraged
the sailors to go; a Turkish conquest of Constantinople was not

απο τους Τουρκους.
Η Οθωμανοί εγκαταστάθηκαν στη Ευρωπη το 1354.
Οι Τουρκοι συνεχώς συντρίβουν τις προσπάθειες τών
Χριστιανών να αναχαιτήσουν την επέκτασή τους. Το 1371
στη Μαριτζα η συμαχικη Σερβο-Βουλγαρικη δύναμη
ηττήθηκε. Το 1389 μια τεράστια Τουρκική επίθεση έκαμψε
την θαρραλέα Σερβικη αντισταση στο Κοσοβο. Ο μικτος
Ουγγρικος –Ρουμανικος στρατός καταστράφηκε το 1444
στη Βαρνα.
Οπως οι Τουρκοι επεκτάθηκαν στα Βαλκάνια και πέρασαν
τον Δούναβη για νέες κατακτήσεις, το ανεξάρτητο Βυζαντιο
κρατούσε την Κωνσταντινούπολη, γεγονός απαράδεκτο
για τους Τουρκους. Οντως λογο της ιστοριας «η Πολη»
λογικα θεωρήτο ως η πρωτεύουσα της αυτοκρατορίας των.
Οι Τουρκοι επολιόρκησαν ανεπιτυχώς την Πολη απο το
1393 μεχρι το 1395 και το 1422. Μολονότι η Βυζαντινή
αυτοκρατορία στη περιοδο αυτη ειχε μειωθή σε μερικες
εκατοντάδες τετραγωνικά μίλια γύρω απο την Πολη καθως
επίσης και το μέγιστο μερος τής Πελοποννήσου, ψυχολογικά
κρατόντας την πόλη σε Χριστιανικά χέρια ηταν πολύ
σημαντικό για τους Τουρκους και τους Χριστιανους για
διαφορετικούς ομως λόγους.
Ο νέος σουλτάνος, Μαχμέτ Β’, ανέβηκε στο θρόνο το 1451.
Οι Τουρκικος στρατος απολάμβανε τα Βαλκανια και την νοτια

On April 5, 1453, the Turkish forces of nearly 300,000
soldiers and irregulars began its assault on Constantinople. The Byzantine defenders, including the Cretans, had
barely 7,000. For nearly two months the Byzantine defenders beat back Turkish attacks. The Cretan sailors bravely
defended the walls near the Horea Gate, beating back numerous assaults by the Turkish invaders.
After a two-month-long siege, the Turks breached
the defenses of the city’s wall on May 29, 1453. When
it became obvious that the Turkish breakthrough had
been made, and that the city was lost, the brave sailors
made an orderly retreat to three towers near the Golden Horn named Alexis, Basil, and Leo. The Cretans then
fortified themselves, as best as they could, against an expected Turkish assault. In less than two hours the Turks
launched intense assaults against all three towers; the
brave defenders decisively beat back all attacks.
A Turkish commander, under a flag of truce, promised
the Cretan sailors that if they surrendered their lives would
be spared. The sailors’ response was “if you want our weapons, come and take them.” The Turks then began a coordinated and overwhelming assault on the three towers. After
several hours of intense fighting, the Cretans had repelled
all attacks—killing numerous Turks and forcing them to
halt their offensive. The Turks were committing every
known outrage against Constantinople’s population, but
they could not dislodge the Cretan sailors. Three hundred

Word of Cretan defiance at Alexis, Basil and Leo reached
the Turkish Sultan, Mehmed II.
Mehmed had developed a grudging admiration for the
Cretan sailors. Moreover, he could not claim total control
over “the city” as long as there was organized Christian resistance. Through his personal envoy the Turkish Sultan
advised the Christian sailors that if they left the towers,
they could keep their weapons, banners and possessions
and sail for Crete as unvanquished warriors. Additionally,
the Cretan sailors would be escorted to their ships by the
Sultan’s personal soldiers.
The Cretan sailors reluctantly accepted Sultan Mehmed’s
terms. Perhaps, most remarkably, the Turks kept their
word and the brave sailors were sailing back to Crete. On
their voyage home, most Cretan sailors donned black
handkerchiefs on their heads to mourn the loss of center
of their culture and religion. This black headgear was the
beginning of the traditional Cretan headgear known as the
“Sariki.”
When Greek Orthodox Christians reflect on May 29,
1453, it certainly is a tragic event that is mourned—the
destruction of the Byzantine capital, and the beginning
of nearly 400 years of tyranny for the Greek people under
Turkish misrule. However, this date should also remind us
how 300 brave Cretan sailors successfully defied the entire
Ottoman Empire. K

του απεσταλμένου ο Τουρκος Σουλτανος πρότινε στους
Χριστιανούς ναυτες να αποχωρήσουν απο τους πυργους
και τους υποσχέθηκε οτι θα μπορούσαν να κρατήσουν τα
αρματα τους, τις σημαιες τους, τα υπαρχοντά τους και να
αναχωρήσουν σαν ανυπότακτοι πολεμιστές. Επιπλέον,
οι Κρήτες ναυτες θα ειχαν συνοδεία την προσωπική
σωματοφυλακή του Σουλτανου.
Οι Κρητες ναυτες απρόθυμα εδεχθηκαν τούς ορους του
Σουλτανου Μαχμέτ. Λιαν αξιωσημειωτο, οι Τουρκοι
κράτησαν τον λόγο τους και οι ηρωικοί ναυτες σάλπαραν για
την Κρητη. Στο ταξιδι της επιστροφής οι περισσότεροι Κρητες
ναυτες φόρεσαν μαυρο μαντηλι στό κεφάλι θρηνώντας την
Αλωση της εστίας του πολιτισμού και Χριστιανισμου. Αυτο
το μαύρο κεφαλομάντηλο καθιερώθηκε σαν μερος της
Κρητικης παραδοσιακής φορεσιάς το λεγόμενο «Σαρίκι.»

As your elected Venizelion Scholarship Chairman, it gives me great pleasure to announce the recipients for this year. 2012 has been an exceptional
year for the PAA and the Venizelion Scholarship program. The PAA awarded scholarships to 30 qualified
students, and I am pleased to say they all had unique
characteristics and qualities. But the common characteristic each student identified in their pursuit of
higher education was their Cretan heritage and its
influence on their desire to succeed. They all have
chosen to better themselves and, coincidentally, the
PAA through higher education. The scholarship winners will help carry the PAA into the next generation
and continue our love for our culture, heritage and
fellowship.
The PAA is blessed to be able to offer this program
of financial assistance to qualified PAA/PYA members. PAA members have donated to the Venizelion
Scholarship fund for more than 75 years. We promote
higher education to our members by giving monetary
assistance as well as honorary recognition to our almost 5,000 members in KPHTH magazine. I applaud
the students for their hard work and will to succeed
through higher education. The added benefit of a PAA
scholarship is the proud moment the student and
their family experience when they see their names
displayed in KPHTH magazine. Not only are we proud
of our family but we’re also proud of our patriotis’,
families, and that my fellow Cretans is what the PAA
has to offer. It is a national, international connection
that dates back to the inception of the PAA.
It was somewhat nostalgic for me since I, too, was
a scholarship recipient. Reading the essays reminded me of the enthusiasm I had as a young scholar in
search of my dreams. I recall the pressure of maintaining an acceptable grade point average and, most
important, the desire to make my parents proud.
The PAA scholarship is more than just financial
assistance—it is recording a place in the history of
the PAA. With today’s technology we archive this

on the Internet for the world to see. It is important
that we perpetuate this program by continuing to
fund the scholarship program. Tax deductible donations memorialize a loved one and provide a vehicle
to help our youth. It is imperative to remember we
need your support to continue this most worthy endeavor.
Over the years, hundreds of scholarships have been
given out. If you were a recipient of the scholarship
program, I encourage you to “donate back” to the
scholarship fund to help the PAA provide greater assistance to our youth. In actuality I think we should
redefine our scholarship program. We need to encourage a “Donate Back Program.” One of the criteria of
receiving a scholarship should be that if economically
possible, at some point and time in one’s career, a
scholarship recipient should on a voluntary basis “Donate Back” to the PAA Venizelion Scholarship Fund.
We are making investments in our youth’s future, and
once a “Donate Back” program is established, it can
perpetuate the scholarship program indefinitely.
Where are all the people who have received scholarships over the last 50 plus years? I would like to identify the PAA alumni, recognize them for their accomplishments and encourage them to “Donate Back.”
There are hundreds of alumni. Past scholarship
recipients who were helped when they needed help,
I am certain if approached, would be happy to “Donate Back.” When the “Named Scholarship” program
was introduced it significantly helped our scholarship
fund. For a $10,000 tax deductible donation, a named
scholarship is given annually to memorialize a donor
or their family. A “Donate Back” program in addition
to the “Named Scholarship” program will help us offer
financial assistance to our youth.
I would also like to particularly thank all donors to
the scholarship program! I look forward to another
great year for the Venizelion Scholarship program.

Scholarship Opportunities
Endowments Offered to Students of Cretan Descent Outside of PAA
The Pancretan Association of America is not the only organization in the United States providing educational scholarships to students of Cretan descent. The following endowments are offered at specific universities and colleges in the
United States and Crete.
VIDALAKIS FAMILY CRETAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM
T
he Vidalakis Family Foundation gave a $1 million gift to Drexel University to endow the
Vidalakis Family Cretan Scholars Program. Through this program, every year eight students are awarded a $5,000 stipend to help support their six-month cooperative education
placement in Crete. Through Drexel’s co-op program, Drexel students “learn by doing” and
alternate between their classroom studies in Philadelphia and periods of off-campus full-time
employment in Crete, which aligns with their academic interests.
Dr. Nick Vidalakis also donated $100,000 to the Pancretan Association of America to help
students who want to study at the Universities of Crete.
ATK/NICK VLAHAKIS SCHOLARSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP FUND
A
s a tribute to his parents, George and Antonia Vlahakis, who immigrated to the United
States from Chania, Crete, and his heritage, Nick Vlahakis established a $1 million ATK/
Nick Vlahakis Scholarship and Fellowship Fund at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh,
Penn., in 2003. Vlahakis attended night school at Carnegie Mellon to obtain a master’s degree in
mechanical engineering while working for Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh.
The fund provides multiple annual scholarships and fellowships for Carnegie Mellon graduates and
undergraduates in selected engineering and technical disciplines. As a tribute to Vlahakis’ parents and
his heritage, the fund makes a special effort to identify students of Cretan descent.
THE ARTHUR AND MARY PLATSIS ENDOWMENT
G
eorge Platsis honored the memory of his parents by establishing the Arthur and Mary
(Seiradakis) Platsis Endowment for the Greek Legacy at the University of Michigan.
The endowment, which was announced in October 2001 at the official opening of Hellenic
Cultural Month, helps fund an annual symposium on the Greek legacy and gives students
prizes for their original work relating to Greek heritage.
In regards to the Platsis Endowment, Mr. Platsis said, “Our hope is that the symposia and prize
contestants will successfully explore the beauty and significance of the Greek tradition and its relevance to contemporary life
and learning.”
Arthur and Mary Platsis immigrated to the United States from Crete. Both exemplified the finest traditions of modern
Hellenism, including hard work, service to their adopted homeland and a commitment to education. Arthur served in the
U.S. military with the 32nd Michigan Infantry during World War I. After returning home, he was the head chef at the American Legion Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich., which catered to veterans suffering from the side effects of poison gas attacks.
During this time, he also worked to support his family in Greece, including saving for the dowries of his four sisters.

Mary volunteered for the Red Cross, helped establish the Battle Creek Friends of Greece during WWII, which shipped
clothes to Greece and provided relief to orphanages in Kandanos and Sougia, her grandfather’s village, from 1945
to1947, under the United Nations Relief and Reconstruction Act.
DR. JOHN PSAROUTHAKIS ENDOWMENTS
D
r. John Psarouthakis is an American engineer, academic, entrepreneur and philanthropist who
lives in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was born in 1932 in Chania, Crete. He is best known for creating
JP Industries Inc. and JPE Inc. Psarouthakis established scholarships for students of Greek descent
at MIT, Carnegie Mellon University and at the Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology. At
MIT, he established the John Psarouthakis and Elisabeth Paleologou Scholarship; at Carnegie Mellon, he established the Anastasia Zacharias Memorial Scholarship; and at the Hellenic College/Holy
Cross School of Theology he established the Pari Paleologou Memorial Scholarship. According to
Psarouthakis, “Both Elisabeth and Anastasia were aunts of mine. Elisabeth took care of me since the
age of three by which time both of my parents had passed away. Anastasia
was my mother’s sister who was instrumental in my going to MIT by suggesting to me to apply there.” For more information about the scholarships,

Το γεγονός αποτέλεσε μεγάλη τιμή για τους Κρήτες
της Αμερικής. Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε από τον
Πολιτιστικό Σύλλογο Αγίου Μύρωνα στα πλαίσια των
εκδηλώσεων «ΡΑΥΚΕΙΑ 2012» με σκοπό να τιμηθεί ο
μεγάλος Αγιομυργιανός Μετανάστης. Την ευθύνη της
οργάνωσης και της πρόσκλησης των ομιλητών είχε
αναλάβει ο εδώ εκπρόσωπος της Παγκρητικής Ιπποκράτης

Στη συνέχεια ο Καλημεράκης εργάζεται σκληρά για να
στεριώσει και να προκόψει, χωρίς ποτέ να ξεχάσει τις ρίζες
του. Το 1929 πρωτοστατεί, μαζί και με λίγους ακόμα, για
την ίδρυση της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής την οποία
υπηρέτησε επί τρεις θητείες ως Πρόεδρος της.
Το έργο του Καλημεράκη ξεκινά πριν την ίδρυση της
Παγκρητικής και έχει να κάνει με μια στερεή βάση πάνω στην
οποία κτίστηκε με ένα πολύ δυνατό μήνυμα «Όλα για την
Κρήτη, όλα για τους Κρητικούς όλα για τον συνάνθρωπο μας»
Από την πρώτη φορά που ο Καλημεράκης εκλέχθηκε
πρόεδρος της Παγκρητική όσα είχαν ανακοινωθεί άρχισαν
να εφαρμόζονται. Το επιθανάτιο φιλοδώρημα ή ασφάλεια
ζωής, αναβαθμίσθηκε το περιοδικό «ΚΡΗΤΗ», αυξήθηκαν
τα μέλη μέσα στους συλλόγους και συνενώθηκαν όλοι
οι Κρητικοί Σύλλογοι με την Παγκρητική. Παράλληλα

καθιερώνει υποτροφίες με την δωρεά μετοχών που ανήκαν
στην σύζυγο του και αναλαμβάνει πρωτοβουλίες για γίνει
πράξη το Βενιζέλειο Νοσοκομείο και οι νέες πτέρυγες στα
νοσοκομεία Καστελίου, Χανίων, Ρεθύμνης καθώς και η
αναβάθμιση των ιατρικών κέντρων Ιεράπετρας και Σητείας,
ενώ παράλληλα αγωνίστηκε και κατάφερε την έκλειψη της
ελονοσίας. Για την προσφορά του Καλημεράκη στην Κρήτη,
πρώτη θέση κατέχει η προσπάθεια για την οικοδόμηση
του Βενιζέλειου Σανατορίου. Ο έρανος για το Βενιζέλειο
ανέδειξε τη δεινότητα του Καλημεράκη σαν ομιλητή και
υπάρχουν πολλά περιστατικά Κρητικών που έδωσαν τα πάντα
στον έρανο. Αναφέρθηκε ο Ιπποκράτης Μπελαδάκης στην
περίπτωση της Χανιώτισσας δασκάλας Κριτσωτάκης από το
Ντιτρόιτ, η οποία είχε μαζέψει χρήματα για να ταξιδέψει στην
Ελλάδα για να δει τους γονείς της πριν πεθάνουν. Δώρισε όλες
της τις οικονομίες για το Βενιζέλειο κα έτσι δεν κατόρθωσε
να επισκεφτεί τους γονείς της πριν πεθάνουν. Επίσης ο
Μαρκάκης από την Βοστώνη δώρισε τα πάντα για τον έρανο
του Βενιζελείου και όταν πέθανε, μάζεψαν οι γνωστοί και οι
φίλοι χρήματα με το «μαντίλι» για να τον θάψουν.
Σημαντική ήταν επίσης η προσφορά στη γενέτειρα του
το 1945 μετά την απελευθέρωση, φέρνει είδη ιματισμού
και ντύνει όλους τους κατοίκους του χωριού Το 1947 που ο
Άγιος Μύρωνας υδρευόταν από πηγάδια ο Καλημεράκης
δώρισε στην τότε κοινότητα 14.000 μέτρα σωλήνες με δική
του δαπάνη για να φέρουν το νερό στο χωριό από την πηγή.
Το 1972 πρωτοστάτησε στην ίδρυση δημόσιου Γυμνασίου
και έστειλε ένα μεγάλο ποσό για τις δαπάνες της κοινότητας
προκειμένου να διαμορφωθεί ο χώρος που θα ανεγειρόταν
το κτίριο του Γυμνασίου. Επίσης ήταν αρωγός σε κάθε τι που
αφορούσε το χωριό του ενώ ποτέ δεν του ζητήθηκε κάτι για την
Κρήτη και να μην εκδηλώσει την προθυμία να το υλοποιήσει.
Μια από τις μεγαλύτερες προσωπικές του προσφορές
υπήρξε η οικοδόμηση μαζί με τον γαμβρό του Σακόραφο,
του οικοτροφείου κορασίδων της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής
Κρήτης στις Μεσαμπελιές.
Μίλησαν ακόμη για την επιμονή του στη διαφάνεια

και τον σεβασμό με τον οποίο περιέβαλε όλους, τόσο τους
αξιωματούχους της Παγκρητικής όσο και τους απλούς
ανώνυμους μετανάστες.

της Παγκρητικής όπως ο τέως Υπουργός Νίκος Σκουλάς,
όπως ο Στέφανος Τραχανάς από τις Πανεπιστημιακές
Εκδόσεις ο οποίος αναφέρθηκε με ιδιαίτερο τρόπο στον
Κώστα Σταματάκη αλλά και όλους που βοήθησαν το έργο
των εκδόσεων, ο Πρύτανης Γιάννης Φίλης αναφέρθηκε
στην τεράστια συνδρομή της Παγκρητικής αλλά και των
Κώστα Σταματάκη και Μανώλη Βελιβασάκη, ο πρόεδρος
του Π.Σ.Κ. αναφέρθηκε στον Σταύρο Σημαντήρη και την
οργάνωση του Π.Σ.Κ. επίσης αναφέρθηκε στον Γιάννη
Νάθενα το πρόγραμμα ΔΙΑΣ και την «Μινωική Οδό».
Ο Υποδιοικητής της 7ης Υ.Π.Ε. Γιώργος Φραγκιαδάκης,
αναφέρθηκε στην διαρκή αξία της ύπαρξης του Βενιζέλειου
Γενικού Νοσοκομείου, για την Κρήτη και ανακοίνωσε ότι έχει
προωθήσει την πρόταση για να ονομαστεί η επόμενη πτέρυγα
που θα κτιστεί στο Βενιζέλειο, «Πτέρυγα Καλημεράκη».
Ο Σεβασμιότατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος ευχήθηκε στους Κρήτες
της Αμερικής να συνεχίσουν να ευημερούν και να έχουν την
ευλογία του Θεού να δίδουν από το περίσσευμα τους, για
τους αναξιοπαθούντες.
Η εκδήλωση θεωρήθηκε ως μια πολύ σοβαρή εκδήλωση
τιμής προς την Παγκρητική, μιας και για πρώτη φορά
συνυπήρξαν τόσες πολλές προσωπικότητες για να επαινέσουν
την διαχρονική πορεία της Παγκρητικής Αμερικής και της
προσφορά της στην Κρήτη.
Κατά την διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης η Παγκρητική ανακοίνωσε τη δωρεά μεγάλης ποσότητας υγειονομικού αναλώσιμου υλικού, αξίας 300.000 δολαρίων στην 7η Υγειονομική
Περιφέρεια Κρήτης και θα διανεμηθεί σε όλα τα νοσοκομεία
και στα Κέντρα Υγείας της Κρήτης.
Ακόμη οι εκπρόσωποι της ανέφεραν ότι συγκεντρώθηκαν
και μετέφεραν στην Εκκλησία της Κρήτης περίπου 30.000
δολάρια και αυτές τις ημέρες θα διαθέσουν αλλά 80.000
δολάρια σε διάφορα ιδρύματα της Κρήτης Μάλιστα
κατά την εκδήλωση προσφερθήκαν επιταγές συνολικού
ύψους 21.000 δολαρίων για την Εκκλησία της Κρήτης το
Παιδικό χωριό SOS την Ηλιαχτίδα και τον Πολιτιστικό
σύλλογο του Αγίου Μύρωνα.

Βελιβασάκη, Μανουκαράκη και Μπελαδάκη που ήταν1.000$
προς το Πολιτιστικό Σύλλογο και μια όμορφη μεγάλη
πλάκα από γρανίτη, πάνω στην οποία απεικονίζεται ο Ν.
Καλημεράκης και το σήμα της Παγκρητικής, τοποθετημένα

παρευρεθέντες ένα προσεγμένο λεύκωμα για τον Ν.

εκδόθηκε από τα ΕΛΤΑ προς τιμήν της Παγκρητικής και της

τον Μεγάλο Καλημεράκη. Και επειδή το έργο και
η παρουσία του Καλημεράκη υπήρξε διαχρονική,

διακυβέρνησης και παρουσίας της Παγκρητικής,
ο Καλημεράκης προήδρευσε μόνο έξι χρόνια.

from Arathena in Sfakia Province. My mother Eleni
Nicolozakis’ family comes from Darmarohori, which
is outside of Chania.
My father was involved in the Cleveland Chapter
of the PAA, so I also became involved. I started out
helping out at chapter events. Then I sat on numerous boards and later became president of our chapter. Afterward I became lieutenant governor and now
I’m the third district governor.
Our District has a long and rich history. We have
some of the oldest chapters in all of the PAA and we
also have the newest chapter, the “Vianos” Chapter
in Columbus, Ohio. I would truly like to thank each
and every chapter in our district for their hard work
in keeping the Cretan culture alive. The third District Chapters and their presidents are:

Our district chapters host a variety of events during the year. The Arkadi-Maleme Chapter will have
its dinner dance on Nov 3. The Cleveland Chapter
will host its Thanksgiving weekend Dinner/Dance
on Nov 24. The Manolakakis – Theodorakis Chapter is planning a 10th year anniversary dinner
dance (the date is to be determined), which will
also include our District Leadership Conference.
Our district conference will be held in Cleveland
sometime in May 2013. In addition, the Akron,
Ohio chapter is also proud to host the 43rd National Convention of the Pancretan Association
of America June 29 to July 5, 2013.
Unfortunately not everyone can claim to be
from Crete. My wife Tsabika is from Rhodes,
but together we have three of the most beautiful daughters that someone can be blessed
with—Eleni (18), Irini (17), and Christina (12).
Our daughters are following in their father’s and
grandfather’s footsteps by becoming involved
in the PAA. The older two are already members
of the PAA and the youngest will join when she
is old enough. The girls were part of the dance
group when the Cleveland Chapter had a dance
group. I love it when they dance so I can shower
them with money. The tradition continues. K

From Early Beginnings to Today

T
he first children of the proud and historic island of
Crete to come to Akron, Ohio, arrived in 1913. They
were few in number at the time and there was no social organization. However, these individuals served the Akron
Greek community well in its early years. When World War I
began several years later in 1917, many Akron Cretans enlisted in the armed forces to fight for their adopted country.
By 1931, the number of Cretan immigrants in the area
had increased and there was a desire to more formally unite.
On Sept. 2, 1931, the Cretans in the Akron area organized
into the “The Cretan Brotherhood of Akron and Suburbs.”
Immediately it became a charter member of the Pancretan
Association of America. Those founding members were dedicated to the organization and donated $10,000 to actively
support the building of hospitals in Crete. The following
year was distinguished by the presentation of “The Holocaust of Arkadi,” a dramatic effort organized and performed
by Akron Cretans that re-enacted the defense of the monastery by heroic Cretan priests and area villagers. The play was
performed in many other cities beginning in 1932. Akron
had a vibrant, active and growing Cretan community.

Manouselis, Joseph Tzortzinakis, George Poleondakis, Gust
Kleines, Gust Vlastos, John Spiridakis, Andreas Manousoudakis and Gust Anastasakis.
The first Cretan Women’s Club in Akron was known as
Mount Ida Auxiliary, with Antonia Manousoudakis serving
as the first president. This ladies organization also supported
many philanthropic endeavors in the Akron Greek community and nationwide.
Headquartered in Akron’s premier Mayflower Hotel, the Cretans of Akron, Ohio played host to the National Convention
of the Pancretan Association of America during the summer
of 1938. Many delegates from all over the United States attended, and the convention was an outstanding success.
The war years of 1940-1945 saw the inception of Greek War
Relief and U.S. Bonds. The members of the Brotherhood contributed toward these drives and they spent many hours soliciting funds to support the effort during World War II.
The first National Pancretan Youth Conference was held in
Akron at the Portage Hotel in 1949. The members have hosted

several District 3 Conferences; the first one in 1961. When
Akron hosted the District 3 Conference in 1965, the membership donated the conference profits plus contributions
by members for a total gift of $7,000 toward the Greek Orthodox Youth Camp in Uniontown, Pa. The most recent PAA
District 3 Conference was held in Akron in May 2011.
Since then, the Akron chapter has supported philanthropic
endeavors of the National Association, including fire relief
funds for Greece, and has contributed to the scholarship program and various other causes. The Akron chapter also supports its beloved church by membership, financial contributions and manpower with many of the members serving as
Parish Council officers and on the Church Board of Trustees.
In recent years, Akron has served the PAA on a district
and national level: past District III Governors and Lt. Governors, Convention delegates, past PYA national president, vice presidents and KPI-KPI editor and the PYA’s
current East Coast Youth Supervisor. In addition, the enthusiasm and outgoing nature of this chapter has played a
key role in forging and maintaining a strong relationship
and ongoing ties between the Pancretan and the Cretans’
Association of Toronto, Canada. This chapter has always
strived to employ an approach of service, hospitality and
most of all … Φιλοξενία.
Today, the “Cretan Association of Akron, Ohio” has upwards of 70 members and is one of 11 active, dedicated
chapters in the PAA’s 3rd District. The men’s and women’s
chapters are combined into one organization, and the Cretan youth of Akron are members of the District III Youth.
The Cretans of Akron continue their mission of building relationships, enjoying fellowship and perpetuating the Cretan culture throughout the Midwest.
This chapter meets monthly throughout the year to discuss the business of the organization. Key functions and
activities that keep the membership connected include: the

annual Cretan Glendi with traditional music from Crete, the
annual Spring Picnic with family and friends, the Annual
Christmas Party at Glenmore Country Club (complete with
a visit from Santa Claus) and fall excursions on hayrides and
pumpkin picking.
Culturally, Akron has orchestrated 10 successful District
III Cretan Dance Workshops under the instruction of Bobby
Markakis, the current PAA Cultural & Education Committee chairperson. And, the Cretan youth of Akron have been
performing traditional Cretan dances over the last two decades at the local and district level at dances/festivals, nationally at Cretan conventions and even in Crete. Today’s
Akron Cretan Dance Group has more than 20 participants.
More recently, a small group of youth and adults capped off
the monthly meetings with a “Cretan Jam Session” where
musical members of the club learn and play traditional Cretan music (lyra, laouto, violi). The children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren of the founding members continue
to carry on the traditions.

Recipes from the Cretans of Connecticut Members
Zucchini Courgettes (Kolokethokeftedes)

Ingredients:
2 lbs. grated zucchini, well strained
1 lb feta, cubed
2 medium tomatoes, cubed
2 teaspoons parsley, finely chopped
2 teaspoons mint, chopped
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 to 2 cups flour
2 teaspoons olive oil
Salt and pepper
Oil for frying
Directions:
• Combine the zucchini with all the other ingredients, minus the oil for frying. Mix well.
• Work with a fork until it becomes a runny batter.
• Heat oil and place spoonfuls of the mixture into the hot oil.
• Fry on both sides until fluffy and golden brown.
• Place on paper towels to drain excess oil and serve.

Vegetable oil
Directions:
• Put grated zucchini in cheese cloth. Drain well.

• Coat in semolina.
• Fry in vegetable oil until golden brown.

Condolences
Our chapter lost three long-standing and cherished
members in April. Millie Calogeras (nee Saridakis), 89,
beloved wife of the late Arthur, leaves behind her children
Denise (Dale) Kronenberger, Athena, Betsy (Jack) Shertzer, and Ellen, along with six grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
That same week we also lost Spero Tetorakis, 90, beloved
husband of Sophie Tetorakis (nee Lentzas) Besides his wife,
he leaves behind his children Peter and Angelo (Susan). At the end of April, Theodore “Ted” Steffas passed away,
leaving behind his beloved wife Sophie (nee Matzorkis), his
children Steven (Colleen), Paul (Charlene) and James (Debbie) and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held at
St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church.
May their memory be eternal. They will be greatly missed.
RAFFLE PARTY
On May 19, our club held its first Reverse Raffle. The
event was attended by approximately 125 people. Guests en-

joyed a delicious prime rib dinner prepared by our member
and caterer Steve Nikolakis. The grand prize was $500. Every
25th number called received $50. It was a fun time for those in
attendance and hopefully this will become an annual event.
CLUB PARTY
This was the first year that we did not hold our annual July
4th picnic. The members voted to cancel this event. Instead we
met at our hall. People brought their own food or purchased
gyro and souvlaki prepared by Steve Nikolakis. Delicious pastries were donated by some of the members and were available
for purchase. The temperature that day was close to 100 degrees! We chose a good day to hold our event indoors! Those in
attendance enjoyed an afternoon of Cretan music and “philoxenia.” By 7:00 p.m. the group dispersed, leaving people plenty
of time to enjoy fireworks held by various communities.

Congratulations
Owner of Arizona-based apparel brand, Living Dreams Clothing, Michael Poulos has been selected from 250 applicants as one of 12 fashion designers to compete for the “Emerging Designer
of the Year” at Phoenix Fashion Week 2012. As part of the competition, each designer is required
to submit 12 new pieces of their work for the event, which will take place Oct. 3-6.
A $10,000 grand prize goes to the winning designer in services from Phoenix Fashion Week to assist in launching their brand. Michael’s Living Dreams Clothing line features bold colors with relaxing and inspirational designs in t-shirts, tank tops and products for both men and women. Living
Dreams Clothing’s mission is to be a part of the “palm tree lifestyle,” using clothing as a canvas to
tell the story.
Poulos’ Cretan family originally hailed from Chania and emigrated to the United States. MiMichael Poulos
chael has been active with the local chapter for a number of years and was the co-chairman of the
club’s recent dinner dance. He is set to chair the event again on Jan. 26, 2013 in Phoenix.
Michael is a 2010 magna cum laude graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in organizational studies.

Testimonial Dinner Honoring
Antonios Kounalakis
On Sunday, May 6, the Modern Greek Studies Foundation honored a true Cretan, Mr. Antonios Kounalakis, at
the Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo, Calif.,
with a lovely testimonial dinner. The event was a benefit for
the Foundation and hundreds of friends and relatives were
there to pay tribute to Mr. Kounalakis. Special thanks to
President George Konstantopoulos of the Modern Greek
Studies Foundation, and Titika Koplos and Katerina Mavroudi-Steck who served as co-chairs. The evening included
a number of beautiful tributes by many friends and fam-
ily members and a video that highlighted Mr. Kounalakis’
wonderful life journey.
As was noted in the program, “Antonios and his brothers
became actively involved in the Cretan Resistance in 1941.
The first Resistance meeting on the island of Crete took place
in the Kounalakis home in Vrisses in June 1941. Antonios
and his brother George handled the resistance correspondence to and from the city of Chania, a game between life
and death, as the Germans were well aware of the Resistance
mailings. The cleverness, bravery and distinct Cretan spirit of
Antonios and George proved instrumental for the Resistance
and deservedly earned them national distinction.”
Among the speakers honoring Antonios that evening

sent in donations in honor of Mr. Kounalakis. The Modern
Greek Studies Foundation raises funds for the Nikos Kazantzakis Chair Endowment, which supports the Modern Greek
Studies program at San Francisco State University.

Earlier in the year, the Epimenides/Ariadne Chapters of San Francisco hosted their annual Cretan Glendi. More than 350
people enjoyed an amazing meal, followed by dancing to the sounds of Andreas Lilikakis into the early morning hours. The
event was a benefit for the Athenagoras Patriach Institute of Orthodoxy in Berkeley, Calif.

Birth of a new Cretan
Ikaros would like to congratulate Nick and Christina
Kokologiannakis on the birth of their second child, John
Charles, this past April. John was born four weeks early,
but was a healthy 7 lbs. 1 oz. The proud grandparents are
Yiayia and Papou Valerie and Steve Bolaris, of Morgan Hill,
and Yiayia Martha Kokologiannakis of Modesto. John
Charles was named after his paternal grandfather, the late
John Kokologiannakis, of Modesto, and his maternal great
grandfather John Alessi, Sr., of Erie, Pa. John has an older
sister, two-and-a-half-year-old Stella.
Baptism
On July 7, 2012, Ariadne Sophia Cocoles was baptized at St.
Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
in San Jose. The Nouno and Nouna are Ikaros members Nick and
Penny Pagonis. The special event
was witnessed by Ariadne’s loving
parents, John and Janet Cocoles,
her big brother Thanos, grandparents Stamus and Mary Cocoles of Ariadne Sophia Cocoles
Modesto, Calif., and Abelardo and
Elsie Gonzalez of Chiclayo, Peru, along with many other close
friends and family, including many members of Ikaros.
CONDOLENCES
It is with a sad heart that I have to report the passing
of two dear Ikaros members, George Koukoutsakis and
Paul Mastorakis.
George Koukoutsakis died unexpectedly on June 24,
2012, after suffering a heart attack. A son of Greek immigrants, George was one of our “Carbon County Greeks,” having been born in Utah on Oct. 21, 1927. He grew up in the
mining town of Columbia, but his family moved to California
when he was 16. George worked for 40 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad, where he was the operations manager,
retiring in 1983.
George is survived by his wife of 61
years, Irene, and his two children, Stella
Kearney (Terry) and John Koukoutsakis
(Claire), and his four grandchildren,
James, Christina, Nicholas and Alexander. George and Irene lived in Mountain
View for the last 57 years.
George was proud of his fellowship
with the Ikaros Chapter of the Pan Cretan
Association, where he was the board secretary for several years. Our thoughts and George Koukoutsakis
prayers are with Irene and the family.

Paul Mastorakis passed away on July 5, 2012, after a courageous bout with cancer. He was 79 years old. Paul was born in
Crete, Greece, on Oct. 18, 1932. He came to America in 1967 to
make a better life for his family. He worked incredibly hard and
achieved tremendous personal and professional success.
Paul was a devoted husband to Denise, his wife of 55 years. He was survived by his son Andrew (Rhonda) and
daughter Kathy (Paul), and grandchildren Christopher, Christian, Jennifer
and Andrea.
Paul was the epitome of integrity,
generosity and selflessness, and he will
be missed by all of Ikaros. Our prayers
are with Denise and the family.
