THE SOURCE November 201 2013 Issue # 11-13 HOL HOLY TRINITY RINITY GREEK REEK ORTHODOX RTHODOX CATHEDRA CATHEDRAL THEDRAL CAMP HILL, ILL, PA Give us this day our daily bread. (Matt 6:11 and Luke 11:3) τὸν ἄρτον ἡµῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον δὸς ἡµῖν σήµερον Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This month’s topic is the Eucharist, generally, and then the bread specifically. Probably most of you realize that in the Orthodox Church the Eucharist plays a central role in the life of the church. We bring bread and wine to church. This is changed into the very body and blood of Christ, then given back to us as Holy Communion or the Eucharist. The Eucharist really is the body and blood of Christ, not “just” a symbol like some non-Orthodox think. This is a great mystery on many levels and to a large degree cannot be explained. Holy Communion is simultaneously both the body and blood of Christ while at the same time being bread and wine. This is sort of like saying 1 + 1 = 1, not 2. That isn’t allowed in most systems of human logic. True. However, God created the universe and human logic and God beyond mere human logical categories. In fact, most of the big problems of the church, the ones that gave rise to Ecumenical Councils, sprang from people relying too much on human logic to “explain” God. The heretics made limited human logic into a sort of net they wrongly thought could contain God and fully explain or know everything about God! The right approach to God is not arrogant logic but humbly purifying yourself (confession, keeping the fasts, study of scriptures, prayer, etc.) and hoping you will have an experience of God. That, and approaching the chalice with “fear of God, faith and love.” Let’s talk about the bread in the Eucharist. In the quote from the Lord’s prayer (above) the Greek word “epiousion” (ἐπιούσιον) is rendered “daily.” However, Epi = over/on top of, ousia = essential and some people combine the two to mean “super-essential.” Or, that which we need for life: bodily and spiritually. And, what is that? Christ Himself, God’s grace, which could be interpreted as Holy Communion, too. We need God’s grace daily. In some monasteries the Eucharist is served daily, at least outside of Great Lent. Even in Lent some monasteries will have pre-sanctified liturgies Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Lent. THE SOURCE NOVEMBER 2013 Page 2 In a parish our size we can easily use four (4) or more loaves of altar bread (prosphora) for each Sunday, mostly for the blessed bread given after communion and at the end of liturgy. Weekday services usually require only one loaf. Some months we need in excess of twenty (20) loaves of bread! We have a dedicated group of bakers---we don’t buy altar bread from a commercial bakery (they don’t offer it in central PA). This group of bakers needs your participation. Ask around for advice on recipes or look on the internet. We would rather the bread be very dense, not airy like dinner rolls. Remember, do not use oil, flour the pans. Also, when the bread is taken out of the oven to cool, most people use wire racks. If you prefer to wrap it in a towel to keep the crust from getting too crunchy, please do not use a towel that has been laundered/dried with any kind of fabric softener or perfumed detergents. The hot bread re-activates the fragrance agent, the bread absorbs the fragrance and it gives the bread an off flavor. Please pray for God’s blessing upon your work before/during the making of the altar bread. In a way, the Liturgy starts when you get out the bowl and ingredients to make the bread! Before liturgy the priest picks a loaf with a nice seal to prepare for the Eucharist during the service of proskomedia. Every part of the seal has meaning and the loaf is cut/prepared with a series of prayers referring to the work of Christ for our salvation, as well as commemorations of the mother of God, angels, the saints, our Metropolitan, the clergy, the people both the living and the dead. Seal on baked bread--------------and as it is arranged on the diskos/paten. The triangle on the left is for the Theotokos. The square/cube in the center is the “lamb.” IC=Jesus XC= Christ, NIKA = triumphant/victorious (over death!). The nine small triangles are for the angels and 8 ranks of saints: prophets, apostles, hierarchs, martyrs, ascetics, unmercenary healers, Joachim and Anna and saints of the day, author of the liturgy i.e. John Chrysostom or Basil the Great (rarely St. James). The crumbs (the leaf looking things my paint program gave me…) are for the living and the dead. The “IC” portion goes in the chalice before the communion of the clergy. The clergy partake of the XC portion. The people are communed with the NIKA portions. The commemorative portions are put in the chalice after communion with a prayer asking God to forgive their sins. Any eucharist that remains at the end of the liturgy is consumed by the clergy with solemn prayers after distribution of antidoron. For presanctified liturgies during Lent, extra “lambs” are consecrated as needed on Sunday and reserved for use later. The prayers of proskomedia are rich with scripture quotes and symbolism. An internet search will quickly bring up the full text. I highly recommend you look over it. Don’t forget, we need YOU to participate in the liturgy by baking prosphoro. If you don’t have a seal, there are a few available in the parish bookstore. God bless and happy baking! + Fr. Congratulations, "Χρονια Πολλα," and thank you to the Syllogos Neohoriton for all the ways you benefit our community. I would like to acknowledge a generous contribution to our church from the Estate of Mr. John Prokop and his sister, Freda. They have left the church a substantial amount of money to be used for the Building and Grounds Trust Fund at Holy Trinity. They also have left another large sum to AHEPA to be distributed as scholarships. We are grateful that they chose to continue doing good through their Estates and we encourage others to include Holy Trinity in their estate planning. We are fortunate to have had these parishioners in our midst. May their memory be eternal. After many months of research and discussion by the Building and Grounds Committee, we expect to soon sign a contract for new heat and air conditioning systems at Holy Trinity. The installation work may start this month. Also, I want to remind everyone how important it is to close all the doors as he or she leaves the church. Before you walk away, please test whether the door is locked such that you can't re-enter without a key. Please treat the church premises as God's house and preserve it for generations to come by making it secure when you are the last to leave. Thanksgiving will soon be here. Don't forget to help those in need throughout the year but especially during this holiday season. Consider inviting someone to your home that may have no one to spend the holiday with. Also, our Philoptochos plans to collect new unwrapped items before Thanksgiving for New Hope Ministries Christmas Wish List. The end of the year is fast approaching. I ask all parishioners to turn in their pledge cards and bring their stewardship up to date. I also want to encourage you to strengthen our church in other ways. Here are some of my suggestions: • Think about why you come to church so you can communicate to friends and relatives why they should come also, especially if they haven't come recently. Bring someone to church on Sunday so they can experience the richness of our faith. • Think about the value and importance of our church and priests. Their importance is obvious when you are asking for a funeral service, a hospital visit, a wedding, an engagement, a baptism, or a 40-day churching, but we need to properly respect them all the time. • Think about strengthening the relationship between our parishioners and our priests. Use your God-given talents to find a way and to start a conversation, that God may be glorified. Have a blessed, healthy, grateful November. Our book is “Everyday Saints” by Archimandrite Tikhon Shevkunov and Lowenfield. “More than a million copies and several million electronic versions of this book have sold in less than a year. Everyday Saints is the English translation of the work that has soared at the top of the bestseller lists in Russia since its publication in late 2011. Winner of several national awards including "Book of the Year", its readership spans philosophical boundaries, from the devoutly religious to the vehemently atheist. Surpassing all competition many times over, it was voted the most popular book in Russia for 2012. Open this book and you will discover a wondrous, enigmatic, remarkably beautiful, yet absolutely real world. Peer into the mysterious Russian soul, where happiness reigns no matter what life may bring. Page upon page of thanks, praise, and testimonies to the life-changing effect of these bright, good-hearted, and poignant tales have flooded the Russian media. This book has been the cause of many sleepless but happy nights: "I couldn't put it down-was sorry when it ended" is the common reaction. The book is being translated into ten different languages. This English translation, Everyday Saints, is every bit as charming as the original.” Everyday Saints is available for purchase from our church bookstore or from Amazon.com. Wood, parishioner Although our attention has been on the celebration of our 75th Anniversary, I would like to share a footnote about some of our early settlers who became members and leaders of our community. While doing an internet search with an amateur genealogist on my father’s early days in Harrisburg, we came across an article in the Patriot Newspaper dated Saturday, June 22, 1918. This article was titled “Eleven Greeks To Go with Draftees Monday” The article continued with a listing of these individuals. Unfortunately this article must have been considered a ‘filler’ because it was located in the Sports section with misspelled names. I am including two lists – one with the Patriot spelling, and the second with my corrected spelling. Check and see if you remember any of the men listed. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No. 112 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance. Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
