Where has the time gone?
Assessing the past year
My dear fellow Cretans,
Just over a year has gone by since I assumed the office
of president. As the chill of the fall envelopes us after a long,
hot summer, I find myself asking introspective questions
about this beloved association, the PAA, and our Cretan
community. I ponder the things that we set out to do in
this administration, the choices we made, whether we’ve
focused on the right objectives, where have we fallen short,
where have we made our community proud.
During the harvest of each year, those who depend on
the earth for the fruits of their labor, assess the returns of
their hard work and whether, indeed, it was a good or a
bad year of harvest. They assess how well they did, what
they could have done differently, and how they would plan
their future activities. During the past month since returning from a whirlwind summer of PAA activities, I too have
tried to assess the fruits of this administration’s efforts since
we started a little more than a year ago. At this time, it is
too soon for definite conclusions but there are, for certain,
some positive signs.
My first observation over the last year was the unbelievable effort of our board. I am very proud to say that the
volunteers of the PAA board do not work like volunteers and
do not work as full time employees. They work full time X
2! Their creative ideas are the inspiration for new programs
and direction. Their steady focus on the PAA mission and
objectives keeps our association on an even keel. Their
dedication and devotion to the PAA goals set an example
for other Greek organizations to follow. It never ceases to
amaze me when I observe PAA board members participating in several teleconferences during a span of one evening
or when they are up late, burning the midnight oil for the
benefit of the PAA. Our board is well aware that only with
hard work and full participation would we be able to affect
changes, changes that meet the needs of our community
and reflect the ever changing profile of Cretan Americans.
I want to thank every member of the board for their hard

work, positive attitude, and willingness to give more than
what is expected of them.
My second observation is the incredibly close bond of
the Cretan community throughout the U.S. and Canada. In
my travels from chapter to chapter and from one event to
another, I am always amazed at the closeness of our members, the sense of community, the strong common bond that
they feel for one another. Young and old, they share that
bond and they share in that “idea” that we call Crete. At the
Leadership Conference in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Cretans from
many parts of the U.S. and Canada gathered by the hundreds. The obvious connection was felt whether at picnics or
dinner/dance receptions, cultural events or one-on-one, Cretans feel close to one another. Even individuals with major
differences feel the dominant Cretan bond which overpowers and keeps them together despite their differences. I can
say with conviction that our Cretan identity is well intact and
our community united.
But, the harvest is not only the time for reaping and assessing, it is also the time to plan the future, to prepare for
future harvests, the time for new beginnings. With that in
mind, the PAA is moving forward with:
• Our Culture and Educational Committee is planning
another music and dance concert that will tour the U.S. and
Canada.
• The PAA is collaborating with the municipality of Kandano and several U.S. universities to offer summer programs
to PYA university students.
• The Cretan Alumni Network (formerly The Cretan Professionals) is gaining momentum.
• The PAA e-Newsletter has been an instant success
reaching nearly 2,000 Cretans in its very short 4-month
existence. We continue to improve this very effective means
of communication.
• Through the determined efforts of our Archives Committee, the PAA Archives are being collected, categorized,

Πότε πέρασε ο καιρός;
Αξιολογώντας το περασμένο έτος
Αγαπητοί μου φίλοι Κρήτες,
Μόλις ένας χρόνος έχει περάσει από τότε που ανέλαβα
το αξίωμα του προέδρου. Με τα πρώτα κρύα του φθινοπώρου
που φθάνουν μετά από ένα ζεστό καλοκαίρι, βρίσκω τον
εαυτό μου να αναρωτιέται για την αγαπημένη μας οργάνωση,
την ΠΕΑ, και για την Κρητική κοινότητα μας. Συλλογίζομαι για
τους στόχους που θέσαμε να πραγματοποιήσουμε σε αυτή τη
διοίκηση, τις επιλογές που κάναμε, αν εστιάσαμε την προσοχή
μας στους σωστούς στόχους, αν χρειάζεται περισσότερη
δουλειά, αν κάναμε την Κρητική κοινότητα υπερήφανη.
Κατά την διάρκεια του θέρους κάθε χρόνο, όσοι
εξαρτώνται από τη γη, και τους καρπούς της εργασίας τους,
αξιολογούν την απόδοση της σκληρής δουλειάς τους, και
αν πράγματι, ήταν μια καλή ή μια κακή χρονιά συγκομιδής.
Αξιολογούν το αποτέλεσμα, τι θα μπορούσαν να κάνουν
διαφορετικά και πώς θα μπορούσαν να σχεδιάσουν το
μέλλον. Την περίοδο μετά την επιστροφή μου από τη
Κρήτη και μετά από ένα καλοκαίρι γεμάτο δραστηριότητες
της ΠΕΑ, προσπάθω να αξιολογήσω τους καρπούς των
προσπαθειών της διοίκησης αυτής από τότε που αρχίσαμε,
λίγο περισσότερο από ένα χρόνο πριν. Αυτή τη στιγμή, είναι
πολύ νωρίς για οριστικά συμπεράσματα, αλλά υπάρχουν,
σαφές, μερικά θετικά σημάδια.
Η πρώτη παρατήρησή μου κατά το τελευταίο έτος είναι η
απίστευτη προσπάθεια του συμβουλίου μας. Μπορώ να σας
πω με πολλή υπερηφάνεια ότι οι εθελοντές του διοικητικού
συμβουλίου της ΠΕΑ δεν λειτουργούν σαν εθελοντές και
δεν λειτουργούν σαν υπαλλήλοι πλήρης απασχόλησης.
Εργάζονται με πλήρη απασχόληση Χ 2! Οι δημιουργικές
ιδέες τους είναι η έμπνευση για νέα προγράμματα και
την κατεύθυνση μας. Η σταθερή εστίαση τους σχετικά με
την αποστολή και τους στόχους της Π.Ε.Α., διατηρεί την
ένωσή μας σε ευθεία πορεία. Η αφοσίωσή τους στους
στόχους της ΠΕΑ αποτελεί παράδειγμα για άλλες Ελληνικές
οργανώσεις. Δεν παύει να με εκπλήσσει όταν παρατηρώ
μέλη του διοικητικού συμβουλίου της ΠΕΑ να συμμετέχουν
σε αρκετές τηλεδιασκέψεις κατά τη διάρκεια της μέρας ή
όταν ξαγρυπνούν προς όφελος της ΠΕΑ. Το συμβούλιο μας
γνωρίζει πολύ καλά ότι μόνο με σκληρή δουλειά και την
πλήρη συμμετοχή θα είμαστε σε θέση να καταφέρουμε
αλλαγές, αλλαγές οι οποίες ανταποκρίνονται στις
ανάγκες της κοινότητάς μας και αντανακλούν τη συνεχώς
μεταβαλλόμενη εικόνα των Κρητών της Αμερικής. Θέλω να
ευχαριστήσω όλα τα μέλη του διοικητικού συμβουλίου για
τη σκληρή δουλειά, τη θετική στάση, και τη προθυμία τους
να δώσουν περισσότερα από ό, τι αναμένεται από αυτούς.
Η δεύτερη παρατήρησή μου είναι η παραδειγματική
στενή σχέση της Κρητικής κοινότητας σε όλες τις ΗΠΑ και
τον Καναδά. Στα ταξίδια μου από σύλλογο σε σύλλογο και
από το ένα γεγονός στο άλλο, είμαι πάντα κατάπληκτος
με το δέσιμο των μελών μας, την αίσθηση της κοινότητας,
τον ισχυρό κοινό δεσμό που αισθάνεται ο ένας για τον
άλλο. Μικροί και μεγάλοι, μοιράζονται αυτό το δεσμό,
όπως μοιράζονται και την “ιδέα” που λέμε Κρήτη. Κατά
τη διάσκεψη στο Καλαμαζού του Μίτσιγκαν, Κρητικοί από
πολλά μέρη των ΗΠΑ και του Καναδά συγκεντρώθηκαν
κατά εκατοντάδες. Ο κοινός δεσμός είναι αισθητός στο
πικ-νικ ή στο δείπνο, στο χορό ή στις δεξιώσεις, στις
πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις ή πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο. Οι Κρητικοί
αισθάνονται κοντά ο ένας με τον άλλο και μπορώ να πω με
πεποίθηση ότι η Κρητική μας ταυτότητα είναι άθικτη και η
Κρητική κοινότητά μας ενωμένη.
‘Ομως, το θέρος δεν είναι μόνο ο χρόνος για επιμέτρηση
και αξιολόγηση; είναι επίσης και ο χρόνος για να
προγραμματίσουμε το μέλλον, να προετοιμαστούμε για τη
μελλοντική συγκομιδή, ο καιρός για νέα ξεκινήματα. Με αυτό
κατά νου, η ΠΕΑ προχωρά μπροστά με προγράματα όπως:
• Η Πολιτιστική και Εκπαιδευτική Επιτροπή σχεδιάζει μια
συναυλία με μουσική και χορό που θα περιοδεύσει τις ΗΠΑ
και τον Καναδά.
• Η ΠΕΑ συνεργάζεται με το Δήμο Καντάνου και διάφορα
πανεπιστήμια των ΗΠΑ για να προσφέρει καλοκαιρινά
προγράμματα για φοιτητές της ΠΕΑ.

internet. The committee is also starting
a program of videotaping our members
and archiving the immigrant stories for
future generations.
• The long awaited “Operations
Manual” is being assembled and we are
hoping to complete it in time for the
Florida Convention.
• We continue to engage the PAA
chapters and encourage grass roots
participation through our ongoing visits
to functions, meetings at the local levels,
and the Leadership Conferences at each
district.
• We continue to improve the content of KPHTH to fill the current needs of
our members.
• Our efforts to welcome the Canada
Cretans into the PAA are ongoing.
The above is but a short list of the
activities for the rest of this year. There
are many other projects that are being
tended to, too many to mention here.
Again, I wish to thank all the individuals
who are spending their time, money and
effort to make our programs a reality.
Only with your effort can we open so
many fronts.

• Στο Κρητικό Δίκτυο Αποφοίτων (Cretan Alumni Network) η διαδικασία
επιταχύνεται για να επαναφέρουμε τους νέους Κρήτες στην οργάνωση.
• Το ηλεκτρονικό δελτίο (e-Newsletter ) υπήρξε μια στιγμιαία επιτυχία
φτάνοντας σχεδόν 2.000 συνδρομητές σε πολύ σύντομο χρόνο. Συνεχίζουμε
να βελτιώνουμε αυτό το πολύ αποτελεσματικό μέσο επικοινωνίας.
• Μέσα από τις αποφασιστικές προσπάθειες της Επιτροπής
Αρχειοθέτησης, τα αρχεία της ΠΕΑ συλλέγονται, κατηγοριοποιούνται,
ψηφιοποιούνται, και καθίστανται διαθέσιμα στο διαδίκτυο. Η επιτροπή
προβαίνει επίσης στην έναρξη ενός προγράμματος βιντεοσκόπησης των
μελών μας και την αρχειοθέτηση ιστοριών μεταναστών για τις μελλοντικές
γενιές.
• Το πολυαναμενόμενο “Εγχειρίδιο Τυποποίησης Λειτουργίας (Operations
Manual)“ της ΠΕΑ προχωράει και ελπίζουμε να το ολοκληρώσουμε εγκαίρως
μέχρι το Συνέδριο στη Φλόριδα.
• Συνεχίζουμε να αναμιγνύουμε τους συλλόγους μας και να ενθαρρύνουμε
τη συμμετοχή τους μέσω των συνεχών επισκέψεων μας στις λειτουργίες τους ,
τις συνεδριάσεις τους σε τοπικό επίπεδο, καθώς και τις διασκέψεις ηγεσίας σε
κάθε περιοχή όπως την συνεδριαση πρόσφατα στο Saint Nicholas Ranch στην
California.
• Συνεχίζουμε τη βελτίωση του περιεχομένου του περιοδικού «KPHTH»
για την κάλυψη των τρεχουσών αναγκών των μελών μας.
• Οι προσπάθειές μας να καλωσορίσουμε τους Κρήτες του Καναδά στην
ΠΕA βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη.
Τα παραπάνω είναι μόνο ένα σύντομος κατάλογο των δραστηριοτήτων
για το υπόλοιπο του τρέχοντος έτους. Υπάρχουν πολλά άλλα έργα που
βρίσκονται υπό εξέλιξη, πάρα πολλά για να τα αναφέρω εδώ. Και πάλι, θα
ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλα τα άτομα που ξοδεύουν το χρόνο τους, χρήμα και
προσπάθεια για να κάνουν τα προγράμματά μας πραγματικότητα. Μόνο με
την προσπάθεια σας μπορούμε να ανοίξουμε τόσοα πολλά μέτωπα.

I want to thank you and the rest of your family for
the love and support all of you have given me through
this very generous scholarship. I have always been a
proud member of the Pancretan Association both in
Florida and now in Boston, and knowing now that this

In previous communication, the
PAA has shared the IRS tax guideline
changes with its Chapters. Tax-exempt
organizations that have not filed
annual returns to the IRS for three
consecutive years automatically lose
their tax-exempt status.
If an organization loses its exemption, it will have to reapply to regain its tax-exempt status and their income may be
taxable. All Chapters with an annual income under $25K,
must file at least a 990-N (epostcard informational return) or
990-EZ. The threshold changes to $50K in 2010.
The IRS has published a list of organizations, including
PAA & PYA Chapters that have not completed the required
annual filing for 2007, 2008 & 2009 returns.
The list may be incomplete and certain Chapters may be
at risk of losing their tax-exempt status, even if their names
do not appear. Chapters should check their records and
check with their local IRS office to determine whether they
are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status.
Each Chapter should have their own EIN number. If you
do not have one, please call the IRS tax line at (800) 8294933. The PAA does not include Chapter financials with their
annual tax filings.

Η 5η Μεραρχία Κρητών
στο Έπος του 1940
Oι αγώνες των εκ Κρήτης Ελλήνων φαντάρων στην
Αλβανία δεν αναγνωρίζονται στο βαθμό που τους
ανήκει. Τα γεγονότα της Μάχης της Κρήτης συνήθως τους
προσπερνούν και τους καλύπτουν. Βέβαια ο λαϊκός ποιητής
δεν τους ξεχνά όπως πολύ καθαρά αποτυπώνετε στους
στίχους του Ριζίτικου τραγουδιού
«Χίτλερ να μην το καυχηθείς πως πάτησες την Κρήτη,
ξαρμάτωτη την ήβρηκες και λείπαν τα παιδιά της. Στα ξένα
επολεμούσανε πάνω στην Αλβανία, μα πάλι πολεμήσανε.
(Ριζίτικο).»
Η 5η Μεραρχία ήταν η Στρατιωτική Μονάδα κάτω
από την οποία πολέμησαν στο Αλβανικό μέτωπο οι
Κρήτες το 1940-41. Η 5η Μεραρχία Κρητών που για
πρώτη φορά συγκροτήθηκε στις 17 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1912
και διαδραμάτισε σημαντικό ρόλο στους Βαλκανικούς
Πολέμους όπως και στην Μικρασιατική εκστρατεία είχε
έδρα τα Χανιά. Κατά την επιστράτευση της 28ης Οκτωβρίου

του 1940 η Μεραρχία συγκροτούνταν από το 14ο Σύνταγμα
Πεζικού με έδρα τα Χανιά, το 43ο Σύνταγμα Πεζικού με
έδρα το Ηράκλειο, το 44ο Σύνταγμα Πεζικού με έδρα το
Ρέθυμνο, το 5ο Σύνταγμα Πυροβολικού Σούδας, καθώς και
τους λόχους Σκαπανέων και Διαβιβαστών, το Στρατιωτικό
Νοσοκομείο Χανιών και μερικές άλλες μικρότερες
βοηθητικές μονάδες. Συνολικά η δύναμη της Μεραρχίας
αποτελούνταν από 566 αξιωματικούς, 18,662 οπλίτες, 687
υποζύγια και 81 οχήματα.
Με την κήρυξη του πολέμου σε πολύ σύντομο
χρονικό διάστημα έγινε η προβλεπόμενη συγκρότηση και
ανάπτυξη της με την προσέλευση των εφέδρων και μέχρι
της 25 Νοεμβρίου έγινε η μεταφορά της από τα λιμάνια
της Σούδας και του Ηρακλείου στην περιοχή Αμυνταίου,
Πτολεμαΐδας, ‘Αργους Ορεστικού. Η Κρήτη από την στιγμή
εκείνη μένει εντελώς ανυπεράσπιστη μια που όπως
αναφέρει ο Προσωπάρχης του Υπουργείου Στρατιωτικών

στην έκθεση του: «‘Απαν το εν νήσο
πολεμικόν υλικόν, μέχρι και του
τελευταίου κιβωτίου πυρομαχικών
και παν μεταφορικόν μέσον, μέχρι
και του τελευταίου αυτοκινήτου ή
ημιόνου, επιταχθέντα εφορτώθησαν
δια το Αλβανικόν μέτωπον.» Ακόμα
και οι 3000 νεοσύλλεκτοι αμέσως
μετά την βασική τους εκπαίδευση
στάλθηκαν στο μέτωπο τον Απρίλιο
του 1941.
Η Μεραρχία από την Μακεδονία
μεταφέρθηκε οδικός στην περιοχή
Μπομπετσίστας, Κιάφε Ψεξές,
Βυθκούκι. Αν και η Μεραρχία
χαρακτηριζόταν ως εφεδρεία
με Διοικητή των Υποστράτηγο
Γεώργιο Παπαστεργίου, έδωσε
τις μεγαλύτερες μάχες της από
τις 29 Ιανουαρίου 1941 μέχρι
τις 12 Απριλίου 1941 όπου είχε
αναλάβει την κάλυψη του τομέα
Κλεισούρας – Τρεπεσίνας. Οι μάχες ήταν πεισματώδεις
και πολλές φορές κατέληγαν σε μάχη σώμα με σώμα για
την κατάληψη και υπεράσπιση σημαντικών στρατηγικών
θέσεων. Η μαχητές της Μεραρχίας κατάφεραν πολλές
φορές να καταλάβουν χωριά, οχυρωμένα υψώματα, μεγάλο
αριθμό αιχμαλώτων, όπλα, και πολλές φορές ολόκληρες
αποθήκες με πυρομαχικά. Αποκορύφωμα ήταν οι μάχες που
ξεκίνησαν στις 9 Μαρτίου και οι Ιταλοί αποκαλούσαν εαρινή
επίθεση. Κράτησαν 17 μέρες και παρακολούθησε ο ίδιος ο
Μουσολίνι από παρατηρητήριο. Οι Ιταλοί απογοητευμένοι
από το πείσμα των Κρητών μαχητών δοκίμαζαν ακόμα και
με προκηρύξεις να κάμψουν το ηθικό τους. Προς έκπληξη
τους όμως το περιεχόμενο τους κατάφερνε ακριβώς
το αντίθετο. Ενδιαφέρουσα είναι μια από αυτές τις
προκηρύξεις: «Στρατιώται της Κρήτης,
Η Αγγλία δια το αποκλειστικόν της συμφέρον σας
έσπρωξε εις τα βουνά και τον θάνατον.
Εις την θέσιν σας εν τη θαυμασία νήσω σας απολαύουν
δεσποτικώς οι ‘Αγγλοι στρατιώται. Μέσα εις το σπίτι σας
κάθονται οι ‘Αγγλοι. Αι γυναίκες σας ενοχλούνται από
τους ‘Αγγλους. Δια ποίον λόγον πολεμάτε: Διότι το θέλει
η Αγγλία, η οποία έχει αγοράσει την Κυβέρνησίν σας.
Μην ξεχάσετε ότι ο μεγάλος σας συμπολίτης, ο Βενιζέλος,
επεθύμησε και εζήτησε την φιλίαν της Ιταλίας.
Ρίξετε τα όπλα και ελάτε. Ημείς θα φερθούμε προς σας
αδελφικά και θα σας επαναφέρωμεν είς την νήσον σας και
εις τας οικογενείας σας. Ως πρώτον σημείον της συμπαθείας
μας θα δώσουμε 500 δραχμάς εις τον καθέναν που θα
παραδοθή εις ημάς με αυτήν την προκήρυξιν.»
Ενδιαφέρουσα είναι και η προκήρυξη – απάντηση από
την Ελληνική πλευρά:
«Ιταλοί στρατιώτες,
Για ποιο λόγο σας απέσπασαν από την ευτυχισμένη
οικογενειακή σας ζωή και σας έφεραν εδώ για να χάσετε τη ζωή
σας στα βουνά της Ελλάδος; Ποιούς λογαριασμούς έχετε να
ξεκαθαρίσετε με τον Ελληνικό Λαό, που δεν είναι εχθρός κανενός
και που αφοσιώνεται σύμπας στις ειρηνικές του εργασίες;
Οι αρχηγοί σας, σας οδηγούν σ’ ένα πόλεμο ΑΔΙΚΟ. Ο
ΘΕΟΣ ΠΟΤΕ ΔΕΝ ΕΥΛΟΓΕΙ ΤΗΝ ΑΔΙΚΙΑ. Λυπούμαστε που
σας χτυπάμε. Αλλά η τιμή μας να προστατέψουμε την
Πατρίδα μας, που οι αρπακτικοί αρχηγοί σας σάς έσπρωξαν
ξεδιάντροπα να κατακτήσετε, χύνοντας το αίμα σας.
Ο πόλεμος μας είναι ιερός. Εσείς πολεμάτε χωρίς
καμιά ηθική ή νομική δικαιολογία. Πετάχτε τα όπλα σας κι
επιστρέψτε στην πατρίδα σας.»
Οι Κρήτες μαχητές έδειξαν μεγάλη αυτοθυσία
πολεμώντας όχι μόνο τον εχθρό αλλά και τις αντίξοες
καιρικές συνθήκες και αναρίθμητες κακουχίες του πολέμου.
Οι απώλειες της 5ης Μεραρχίας κατά την διάρκεια του
πολέμου ήταν μεγάλες, υπήρξαν οι μεγαλύτερες συγκριτικά
με όλες τις άλλες Ελληνικές Μεραρχίες. Συνολικά είχε 1,141
νεκρούς, 2,025 τραυματίες, 2,553 παγόπληκτους και 434 με
διάφορα άλλα νοσήματα.
Η τελευταία πράξη του δράματος του πολέμου για την 5η
Μεραρχία παίχτηκε στην Λάρισα. Κατά την οπισθοχώρηση
η εντολή παράδοσης του οπλισμού στους Προέδρους
των τοπικών κοινοτήτων στις 24 Απριλίου 1941 βρίσκει
την Μεραρχία έξω από τα Γιάννενα. Οι εναπομείναντες
βαδίζοντας στην γραμμή ‘Αρτα-Πρέβεζα-Ναύπλιο στις αρχές
του Αυγούστου φθάνουν στην Πελοπόννησο. Από εκεί
άλλοι βαδίζουν προς το νότο και άλλοι προς την Αθήνα.
Περίπου 1200 από αυτούς φθάνουν στην Αθήνα και εκεί
σε ένα συσσίτιο στο Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο αιχμαλωτίζονται
από τους Γερμανούς και αποστέλλονται σε στρατόπεδο
συγκεντρώσεως στην Λάρισα. Μόνο περίπου 500 γλύτωσαν
από τις απάνθρωπες κακουχίες των Γερμανών. Όμως ούτε
οι υπόλοιποι κατάφεραν να φθάσουν στην Κρήτη πριν την
Μάχη της Κρήτης και δικαίως ο ποιητής αναφέρει:
«Kρήτη η Μεραρχία σου αν ήτανε κοντά σου δε θα
πατούσαν Γερμανοί τ’ άγια τα χώματά σου.»

Saint Nicholas Ranch
and Retreat Center

The history of Saint Nicholas Ranch dates back to 1979.
In that year, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony arrived in
California as the newly elected bishop of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of San Francisco. He brought with him boundless enthusiasm and energy, love and pride for his Cretan
heritage, and a passion for reaching out to the youth of the
Church. Soon after his arrival in the Diocese, he shared his
vision for the creation of a retreat and conference center
that could be used to provide programs for the faithful of
the Church, especially the youth.
While celebrating a baptismal service, he cradled the
newly baptized infant in his arms and proclaimed to the
congregation: “By the grace of God, I’m looking for someone to give me a million dollars, or its equivalent in land, to
build special facilities for our youth, facilities to nourish and
spiritually mold them in the dynamic life of Christ’s living
Church.” Many in the congregation probably shrugged off
the comment as the unrealistic dream of a young and inexperienced bishop. Others, however, were inspired and excited by this dynamic young bishop’s vision. A young priest,
Fr. John Bakas, hearing Bishop Anthony’s words, thought of
a friend who had a large parcel of land nestled in a beautiful
valley in the Sierra Nevada foothills, just outside of Sequoia
National Park. The property, owned by the Nick Kossaras

family, had once been part of the huge Sally K horse ranch,
which in the early 20th century had provided work horses
that pulled wagons of ice to homes and businesses in the
San Joaquin Valley. The Kossaras family enthusiastically embraced the Bishop’s dream and donated the entire 180 acres
to the Diocese.
We can only guess at Bishop Anthony’s thoughts as he
drove to the property for the first time. Making his way
through the seemingly endless orange groves and grape
vineyards of the eastern San Joaquin Valley, followed by the
steep drive up through the Sierra foothills, dotted with granite rock outcroppings and Oak forests, he arrived at a large
valley surrounded by towering mountains. The landscape
must have reminded him of his beloved Crete and, as he
looked at the old horse corrals, ranch buildings, the rodeo
arena, the grass fields and oak forest, he probably imagined
all that was to come. Saint Nicholas Ranch was born.
Immediately, it became a center for retreats and a youth
summer camp. In the early days, the old ranch buildings
were utilized, the centerpiece being a two story horse barn
built in the 1890’s in which a chapel dedicated to Saint
Nicholas was built. Before long, a beautiful conference and
retreat center took shape. The original 180 acres grew to
nearly 300 as additional parcels were purchased. Currently,
the Ranch facilities include 28 hotel style lodge rooms that
can house up to 90 people, 12 dormitories able to accom-
modate a total of 144 people, a large dining hall, two large conference
rooms and several smaller meeting rooms, along with picnic areas, athletic fields, a pool, a lake, and hiking trails. A favorite spot is the Cretan
Plaza Barbeque and Picnic area. Built and maintained by the chapters
of the Pancretan District 6, the Cretan Plaza is used throughout the
year, especially during the annual Cretan Family weekend.
As a young student at the Patriarchal Theological School of Halki,
Metropolitan Anthony had visited the Monastery of the Holy Theotokos, the Life Giving Spring located just outside of Constantinople. This
historic monastery contains a miraculous spring that for hundreds of
years has worked miracles through the intercessions of the Virgin Mary.
During his visit to the Monastery, the young seminarian promised the
Mother of God that if he was ever blessed to become a bishop, he
would build a monastery dedicated to her. In 1993 the promise was
fulfilled with the opening of the Women’s Monastery of the Holy Theotokos, the Life Giving Spring. Built on a hill overlooking the Ranch, the
monastery offers a spiritual oasis of Orthodox Christian worship and
spirituality to all who visit. The Abbess, Mother Markella, affectionately referred to as Gerondissa, oversees a growing community of 18
nuns. The monastery also contains the tomb of Metropolitan Anthony,
located directly behind the Altar of the Katholikon (main church) of the
monastery.
After his death, Metropolitan Anthony was succeeded by Metropolitan Gerasimos. Having visited the Ranch while serving as Archdeacon
to Archbishop Iakovos, Metropolitan Gerasimos had a great appreciation for this ministry of the Metropolis, and a clear vision for its future
potential. From the beginning Metropolitan Gerasimos has made the
Ranch a priority, working tirelessly to improve the facility and grounds
and to expand the ministries and programs offered at the Ranch.
Today, Saint Nicholas Ranch operates year-round and is home to a
wide variety of programs and events. It offers a teen summer camp,
youth and young adult retreats, family camps, a Greek language camp,
and a variety of Elderhostel programs. Many organizations, parishes,
and schools use the Ranch to hold their events. These include family
reunions, parish retreats, high school retreats, marriage encounters,
conferences, and music camps. Some of the larger groups include the
annual Philoptochos sponsored Kids and Cancer Camp Agape program,
the Orthodox College Conference, the California Autoharp Gathering,
the Cretan Family Weekend, and the Orthodox Senior Camp. Recently,
an ambitious effort has begun to renovate the now 30 year old buildings and grounds.
Metropolitan Anthony loved Saint Nicholas Ranch and the Monastery. He put all his heart and energy into making his dream a reality
and those who live and work at the Ranch feel his presence every day.
His vision, shared so long ago, continues to guide and inspire the holy
ministry of Saint Nicholas Ranch.

FOR YEARS, Greece has witnessed
an exodus of its talented and brightest the much talked-about brain drain. But
there’s a flip-side.
Alexandra Manousakis is a young
Greek American who put aside lucrative career opportunities in the United
States to build a future for herself in
Greece.
The 26-year-old, who was named
one of Greek America’s young leaders
last week (see story below), runs Nostos Vineyard on the island of Crete.
“The award was presented to 40
people of Greek descent who are under
40 years old and leaders of their industry,” Manousakis says. “It’s humbling
beyond words. Once you read all the
biographies of the other recipients - I
almost didn’t feel that I deserved to be
up there with all those people. So I’m
very honoured.”

DC, Manousakis says she always felt
strongly about her Greek roots. As
a youngster, summer holidays were
spent in Greece. And after spending
six years studying and working in New
York, Manousakis decided to pack up
and plant her roots at her father’s vineyard in Chania, Crete.
Athens News: Was it a difficult decision to make?
Alexandra Manousakis: Well, I was
going back and forth every summer, so
I knew Greece very well. And I wanted
to go and it was kind of a “now or never” type of thing. I knew I could stay
in New York where I was working in
marketing and I had a good job. I could
have stayed in New York, but I had always wanted to come and try out life
in Greece.
It wasn’t a hard decision. And as

they say, no regrets.
Tell me about the winery.
The wine is Nostos Wine. It’s the
Manousakis Winery. It started back in
1983, but the idea has been around for
a long time, since 1973. The first plantings of our vineyard were in 1993 and
our first vintage was 1997. In the beginning, until 2001, we were exporting
all of our products to the US and now
we’re in Greece, Germany, Holland,
Austria, Cyprus and Poland, and soon
Canada. I now run the winery.
What does your job entail?
It’s really different from what I was
doing in New York. I focus on sales and
marketing, but my job at the winery involves a lot of public relations and basically leading the winery into the future.
We plant vineyards every year so production goes up every year.
What was it like growing up Greek
in America?
My dad is Greek. I had the typical

I visited Greece every summer - never
missed a summer. We had a Greek restaurant growing up. I went to Greek
school and all that stuff, but I didn’t really get involved in the Greek community until I got to college.
I always felt very attached to Greece
even though I went to an international
school.
What made you want to come to
live in Greece?
I think the need to move to Greece
kind of came about from spending all
my summers in Greece.
What are your plans for the future?
Well, I’m busy now with plans to
build a new winery right next to our ex-
isting one. This is a big plan for the future. There’s also something else in the
works which I don’t want to announce
yet.
In general, we’re very much into giving back to the environment and about
doing things sustainably. We want to
get into everything green. It’s something that we want to emphasise.
Can you recommend a good wine
for the summer?
I would definitely recommend our
white wines, but all of our wines are
good summer wines even though some
people don’t like drinking red wine in
the summer. Each wine has its own appeal. Some wines are great for relaxing
at home, while others go great with arni
sto fourno (lamb in the oven). I would
recommend all of them. What else
could I say!

The Paitakis family legacy began when Constantine Paitakis borrowed money to send his son to the “promised land” to
help the family escape poverty. John, who was born in 1890
in Vafe, Apokorona, Hania, Crete was chosen by his father to
come to America in 1909 rather than his older brother, Adam,
who was already married and had family responsibilities.
He arrived at Ellis Island at the young age of 19 and settled
in Price, Utah, where he would work hard and long hours in
the coal mines. His first obligation was to send money back
Company. Soon after, Adam sent for his family. They arrived
just as the U. S. was entering the First World War.
The following year, in 1918, John was drafted into the U. S. Army.
He sold his cattle and was sent to France, where he fought with
two other fellow Cretans, George Paliodakis and John Dokimakis.
John Dokimakis returned; George Paliodakis was killed by German artillery, and John Paitakis returned with shrapnel wounds
and mustard gas that would later come back to haunt him. After a brief stay with his brother in New Jersey, John re-

Crete to sponsor the dowry of his two sisters, and to pay off his father’s
loan. Under the Homestead Act of 1862, he acquired 160
acres of land and started a dairy business in Sunnyside, Utah.
In 1913, he sent for his brother, Adam, who, by that time, had
3 children. Adam settled across the country in New Brunswick, New Jersey,where he found a job at the Michelin Tire
turned to Utah. Once settled, he married his 17 year old bride, Helen Kavoulakis, in 1921 and welcomed one sister
from Crete, while continuing to work
in the coal mines. The conditions in
the mines were difficult for all miners, but especially immigrants.
His wife’s father had survived the Ludlow Massacre in Ludlow,
Colorado, which took place years earlier. Fearing a similar uprising would occur in Sunnyside, Utah, his father-in-law encouraged
John and Helen to move to New Brunswick where they began
building their family.
Helen Paitakis gave birth to four children by the time she
was 23, but never gave up hope that she would some day go

back to Crete as she missed her family and the fragrance of
her village and all of the nature and botanicals she longed for
since she left. Living through the difficult years of the depression in the U.S., Helen often cried and developed migraines. John worked 12 hours a day/7 days a week at a local restaurant that many times could not pay him. While John was
keeping up with his rent and utilities, there was little money
to buy food or anything else for their family.
Helen became increasingly disappointed with the life in
the U.S. stating she came to America only to find poverty, despair, no way to earn money, and a language she didn’t understand. After Helen was hospitalized in 1932, John borrowed
money from family and friends to send his wife and children
back to Crete to see her family and to escape the effects of the
economic depression. John, recalling the poverty he endured
in Crete before coming to the U.S., had no intentions of returning himself.
Helen reunited with her family and introduced her young
children to her parents. They remember waking up to the
clear air and natural smells and sounds of life in Crete, very different from their lives of noise and air pollution in New Jersey.
But it wasn’t long before Helen’s struggle with the dirt floors,
fleas, bed and other bugs and general life in Crete made her
realize she was better off raising her family in America. Origi-

the depression, holding various jobs to survive, and another
child was born.
Helen and John Paitakis raised 5 children: Constantine,
Stephen, Katherine, Christ and George.
Many members of the Paitakis family belonged -- and still
belong -- to PAA Chapters across the country including Price,
Utah, New Brunswick, New Jersey, Clearwater, Florida and
Modesto, California.
Last year marked 100 years since the first Paitakis arrived
on American soil.
Steven Paitakis has written the history of his family called
The Paitakis Family Genealogy.
Beginning with his grandfather, Constantine Paitakis, he
captures the saga of each family member as they uprooted
their lives or watched as their loved ones boarded ships, busses and trains in search of a better life for their families. Each
of these family member’s stories and quotes of their journey have been passed down from generation to generation.

As Cretan pioneers in America, they made a difference in
our country, while never forsaking their morals, beliefs, cul-

nally, she had hoped to stay in Crete for 2
years. Within a year she was making plans to return to New
Jersey. As they boarded the bus to the port, Helen’s parents
were sad but stoically said goodbye to Helen and the children,
knowing they probably would never see them again. This was
a scene played over and over among families as they separated in search of a better life.
Finally returning and settling back to her home in New
ture, traditions, language or their beginnings.
It is these stories that
make us appreciate our
lives today.
This is just one story of Cretans who left
their homeland looking
for that elusive country
where the streets where
supposed to be paved in
gold. What they found
were many challenges -- but they included new and exciting opportunities for themselves, their families, and a new
beginning.

Φιλαδέλφεια των ΗΠΑ. Στο χωριό
Μεσκλά, στα ιστορικά χώματα των
Λευκών Ορέων της μεγαλονήσου, πλάι
στο νερόμυλο της προσπάθειας και
της επιτυχίας, το Σάββατο 24 Ιουλίου,
συγγενείς, φίλοι, συγχωριανοί και
μέλη της κοινότητας του Ντρέξελ,
όλοι ευλαβικά παρασταθήκαμε
στην επιμνημόσυνη δέηση και
στη συγκινητική τελετή των
αποκαλυπτηρίων της προτομής, που
φιλοτεχνήθηκε από το συντοπίτηγλύπτη Ζήνο Φρουδάκη, μία ακόμη
ευγενική προσφορά της Παγκρητικής
Ένωσης Αμερικής. Στη συνέχεια με

εμπνευστή του μοναδικού Τμήματος
Κρητικών Σπουδών σε αμερικάνικο
Πανεπιστήμιο που μας άφησε
απροσδόκητα ενάμιση χρόνο πριν
για να συνεχίσει να δίνει από τα
επουράνια έμπνευση στον αγώνα για
τη διάδοση κι ανάπτυξη του κρητικού
πολιτισμού παγκοσμίως:

στην υποτροφία ενός από τους χορηγούς κι επίσης
σπουδαίου κρητικού Δρ. Νικολάου Βιδαλάκη,
δικαιώνοντας την προσπάθεια μπροστά στα
μάτια της γυναίκας του Ελεάνας και της κόρης
του Μαρίας που καμάρωσαν τη φροντίδα και
τη συνέχεια. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως, τόσο το
πρόγραμμα μαθημάτων με διδακτικές μονάδες
αμερικανικού πανεπιστημίου σε συνδυασμό με
επιτόπιες επισκέψεις φοιτητών «στην αλλοδαπή»
όσο και η πρακτική άσκηση φοιτητών στο νησί
αποτέλεσε υψηλό όραμα του Κωνσταντίνου
Παπαδάκη, το οποίο και συνεχίζεται επάξια για
να τιμά τη μνήμη του και να πολλαπλασιάζει την
κρητική επίδραση. Εξάλλου, ο Δρ. Παπαδάκης
«επιζεί» σε χιλιάδες συναδέλφους και μαθητές,
μελλοντικούς πολίτες του κόσμου γιατί, όπως
μαρτυρεί ο Περικλής στον «Επιτάφιο» του
Θουκυδίδη, «ανδρών γαρ επιφανών πάσα γη
τάφος» («για τους διακεκριμένους, ένδοξους
ανθρώπους ο τάφος είναι όπου γης»).
Ας συνεχίσουμε να γιορτάζουμε, λοιπόν, όπως
του έπρεπε, το μέγα άνθρωπο με τρόπο κρητικό
που επισφραγίζει πως οι ψυχές δεν πεθαίνουν:
φορούν τις μνήμες και κυκλοφορούν ανάμεσά μας
ως πνεύματα που δίνουν συμβουλές και γνωμικά
που καθορίζουν τη ζωή μας. Εμείς που τον
ζήσαμε στο Πανεπιστήμιο ακόμη δεν μπορούμε
ν’ αποδεχτούμε και να συνειδητοποιήσουμε
την απουσία, αιφνιδιασμένοι και βουτηγμένοι
σε πρωτόγνωρη λύπη και προβληματισμό για
την απώλεια ενός ανθρώπου «βουνό». Ας
αναλογιστούμε, όμως, ότι εμείς οι ίδιοι μπορούμε
(και οφείλουμε) να του χαρίσουμε παραπέρα ζωή
ακολουθώντας πιστά το ομηρικό ρητό που ο ίδιος
ακάματα υπάκουε: «Αιέν αριστεύειν και υπείροχον
έμμεναι άλλων» («πάντα να αριστεύεις και να
ξεπερνάς τους άλλους»).
Μπορεί ο Δρ. Παπαδάκης να μην
ξανατραγουδήσει κρητικά, να μην παραπονεθεί
ξανά πατρικά, να μην ξαναμαλώσει
εποικοδομητικά, να μη μας παρασταθεί
ηλεκτρονικά με ένα μήνυμα στις 6:00 το πρωί, να
μην ξαναφάει το αγαπημένο του λαγό στιφάδο.
Όλοι μας, όμως, έχουμε τη φωνή του στην
Παπαδάκη
καρδιά μας --εγώ ιδιαίτερα έχω ένα καθήκον
να συνεχίσω το μέγιστο κρητικό έργο που τόσο
υποστήριξε από τα πρώτα μου «φιλαδελφικά»
βήματα. Όταν τον φέρνω στη σκέψη μου,
φύλακα-φρουρό και σύμβουλο των πράξεών μου, θ’ αντικρύζω τη
φωτογραφία του ως νεαρό με την κρητική φορεσιά και θα’ναι σαν να
με φωτίζει ο ίδιος ο φάρος του λιμανιού των Χανίων, υπαγορεύοντάς
μου, «καζαντζακικά» κι υπενθυμίζοντάς μου:
Ποτέ μην αναγνωρίσεις τα σύνορα του ανθρώπου! Να σπας τα
σύνορα! Ν’ αρνιέσαι ό,τι θωρούν τα μάτια σου. Να πεθαίνεις και να
λες: Θάνατος δεν υπάρχει!
Η ζωή όλη είναι μια φασαρία.
Μόνο ο θάνατος δεν είναι. Η ζωή είναι όταν λύνεις το ζωνάρι σου
και ζητάς φασαρίες.

the summer events was surely the World
Council of Cretans Convention in Lasithi.
Prime Minister of Greece George A. Papandreou opened the ceremonies and was the
keynote speaker and two former PAA presidents were recognized and honored for
their contribution to the WCC: Mike Elliott
for the vision he possessed for a world organization of Cretans; Stavros Semanderes
for making the WCC a reality, were among
the highlights.

Το Καρτ σαν άθλημα είναι ο προθάλαμος της Formula
1 και πολλές χώρες στοχεύοντας στην παγκόσμια προβολή
τους έχουν βοηθήσει αθλητές τους να φτάσουν στον στόχο
αυτό. Δυστυχώς στην Ελλάδα αυτό δεν μπορεί να γίνει
είτε γιατί δεν έχουμε την αναγκαία νοοτροπία είτε γιατί
δεν υπάρχει ομοσπονδία μηχανοκίνητου αθλητισμού η
οποία θα στήριζε τους αθλητές
οι οποίοι διαπρέπουν σε αγώνες
Καρτ παγκοσμίου βεληνεκούς.
Ο Αλέξανδρος τα τελευταία
5 χρόνια που εκπροσωπεί την
Ελλάδα σε αυτούς τους αγώνες
έχει δείξει δείγματα ταλέντου
και επίπονης προσπάθειας,
γι’ αυτό άλλωστε έχει κινήσει
και το ενδιαφέρον ομάδων της
Formula 1, οι οποίες αναζητούν
ταλέντα από τις μικρές ηλικίες.
‘Eχουμε ήδη κάποιες συζητήσεις
με ομάδες της F1 από πέρυσι,
οι οποίες αναλαμβάνουν την
προώθηση του παιδιού από την
ηλικία των 15 ετών και μετά. Τα
15 έτη είναι η ηλικία κατά την
οποία οι αθλητές αυτοί έχουν
το δικαίωμα συμμετοχής στο
πρωτάθλημα της Formula 3,
δηλαδή το ενδιάμεσο στάδιο
μέχρι την F1 και στο οποίο
ομάδες της F1 λαμβάνουν μέρος.
Δυστυχώς η οικονομική κατάσταση της οικογένειας
του Αλέξανδρου δεν της επιτρέπει να ανταπεξέλθει στις
ανάγκες του για τα επόμενα δύο έτη μέχρι την μεταπήδηση
του στην F3. Πρέπει επίσης να σας σημειωθεί ότι ο
Αλέξανδρος έχει ακόμη δύο αδέλφια 11 και 5 ετών τα οποία
έχουν στερηθεί πολλά μέχρι σήμερα για χάρη του 13χρονου
αδελφού τους.
Μέχρι σήμερα έχει βρεί
συμπαράσταση από τους :

Ειρηναίο ο οποίος βρίσκει χρόνο να
ασχοληθεί με τον Αλέξανδρο μέσα

DOLLAR FLIP?
“Ten cents for a dance”! Well, that San Francisco tradition, according to Wikipedia, is what it cost a typical male
patron in the 1920s at a so-called taxi-dance hall to dance
with a taxi dancer, usually a young woman. Back then, the
owners of a taxi-dance hall provided the music, a dance
floor and taxi dancers for their patrons. Today, a fistful of
dollars can snag you a song AND a dance – if you can Google
your way to a Greek party. Civilization wasn’t all the ancient
Greeks were cradling back in the day. This song, dance and
dollar tradition –which often rewards a dancer’s rhythmic
moves and pays the band for the requested song of choice
together with a cascade of dollar bills flipped and thrown
over the dancer’s head by a fellow partier - has been around
for hundreds of years. What makes this tradition of, for lack
of a better term - dollar flipping - more rewarding (and more
selfish) than taxi-dance-like venues is that it came with a
choice – with or without a dance partner. Who else but the
Greeks and the descendants of Crete’s King Minos himself
could come up with the “parangelia” and the famous “dollar flipping” craze which today continues to captivate the
guests at Greek wedding receptions and festive occasions
from Salonica to Silicon Valley.
Before we can talk about dollar flipping, we must first
briefly chat about “parangelia” which, essentially means,
order or request. Seen notably in Crete years ago, it was
not uncommon for someone at a reception to approach musicians and request a particular song. This person – typically

a male, would drop the currency of the day into a kapelo or
hat for that privilege, beside the reigning bouzouki player.
The song might be played immediately or plugged later
into the queue on behalf of the requesting party. When
the band eventually hit the buyer’s choice in the playlist,
the requester would essentially “own” the dance – holding
center stage on the dance floor ready to perform solo or set
to captain a line of dancers linked to family and friends.
As we fast forward to the present, we see that parangelia hasn’t changed much. However, the “method of
payment” has morphed into something new even as the
gatherings grow larger from wedding receptions to today’s
ethnic dance competitions. The funds find their way from
the requesters to the band, not by passing the hat and
not through PayPal, but indirectly through dollar flipping.
Contrary to popular belief, the money that reaches the floor
does not go to the dancers. Nor, as my young son once
believed, is it “free money” for the children who scoop it up
during and after the dancers are done. Rather, the dollars
find their way to the musicians at the end of the performance, as a tip.
One Cretan described dollar flipping as - “na petaxo ta
lefta,” meaning “I will throw the money.” Dollar flipping
can be defined as an event wrapped in a moment. It is
sometimes planned or even spontaneous. It has raised the
dance floor to the next level – connecting the musicians, the
dancers and the spectators (audience) even closer together.

We’ve come a long way as parangelia has gone genderneutral as all recipient dancers are handsomely rewarded
with added attention for their abilities. Take the Pancretan
Association dance exhibitions, for example, a spectacle of
sound, color and motion yet to be rivaled by modern HD
and 3D entertainment technology. A popular combo mezze plate
often served at Cretan events is a
dollar flip and a pentozali dance
when, during the pentozali, a
proud parent often struts to the
dance floor while young dancers
are in full swing – and ceremoniously showers a lead dancer with
hundreds of single dollar bills
flittering like confetti about his or
her head and shoulders. At dance
exhibitions, trophies as incentives
seem secondary as dollar flipping
can transform the simplest of
dancers with heart into superstars.
There are no hard and fast rules as to how to dollar
flip. Some flippers parade onto the dance floor and fan the
dollars across the palm of their outstretched hand while the
other hand quickly plucks each bill with precision-like clarity
akin to a casino counting machine. The audience witnesses
the sprinkling of dollars like flakes of fairy dust over the
dancers. Other flippers simply stroll to the dancers with a
thick wad of bills and toss the currency into the air over the
lead dancer and quickly exit the stage.
There also are no visible restrictions as to who can be a
dollar flipper. Men do it. Women do it. However, timing
one’s arrival to the floor is important and height can be a
factor. Don’t appear to rush onto the floor. Too much the
rookie. Wait until the music, dancers and audience get
into it. Take the floor like it’s yours. If there is a mismatch
in height from flipper to dancer, especially if the flipper is
much shorter, the flipper must take care in not blinding the
dancer with a stack of bills. There seems to be no guidance,
only a “do as I do” attitude among the Pancretan and Hellenic communities. However, I’m sure we will see it pop up
as a “how-to” demonstration at coming Greek Festivals. The
sky is literally the limit for this phenomenon. Dollar flipping
could become a stand-alone fundraiser where flippers compete for best stride-to-stage, toss and hang time. The trend
could break out of its ethno-bubble and make its way into
the current club scene….dollar flipping at a Hip-hop venue?
For now, parangelia stands tall beside the Parthenon as
an institution. And one sees its companion trend of dollar
flipping weaving its way into new century Europe and the
U.S. where young parents and 20-somethings line up beside
the parquet-squared dance floors requesting songs and waiting their turn to celebrate their dance idols. In this day and
age, keep your plastic Visa and tomorrow cards at home,
because today, it’s all about having the right paperwork for
the dance floor.

Dr. Emmanuel
G. Kopidakis
The Cretans Fraternity, “The
White Mountains”, Highland Park NJ
is mourning the passing of one of its
longtime and beloved members, Dr.
Emmanuel G. Kopidakis. Dr. Kopidakis
gave tirelessly and selflessly of his time
and talent to better the lives of others.
He came from the humble upbringings
of Assites in Iraklion Crete and grew up
during the very trying times of World
War II but also times that gave way to
change, opportunity and vision for a
brighter future. “Manoli” was a stellar
student, graduating from the Athens
University School of Medicine and
later serving in the Medical Corp of the
Greek Military in Kozani, Greece. He
came to the U.S. in 1959 as a Medical Resident in Surgery at Jersey City
Medical, joining his childhood friend
Dr. Stamatis Arkoulakis, member of the
chapter, who had come a year earlier.
A bright young man, thousands of
miles from his homeland, Manoli had
the ambition to persevere and make
a difference with his life, performing
miracles for others. After graduating
Medical school and meeting the love
of his life, Dr. Marianna Kopidakis,
he established his surgical practice in
Crete for a brief period. Upon return-

ing to the U.S. in 1967, to broaden his
horizons, he joined John F. Kennedy
Medical in Edison, N.J., where he later
served as Director of Surgery.
Dr. Kopidakis pursued a professional
career in General Surgery. His vision
for innovation was the driving force
behind the John F. Kennedy Medical
Center Development of Surgery. Dr.
Kopidakis introduced innovative and
ground-breaking Laser, Bariatric and
Laparoscopic Surgery and their applications to the center. He participated
in several surgical conferences held
in Crete and was also instrumental in
the extraordinary fundraising effort in
the early 1980’s, alongside former PAA
President, the late George Vardakis.
The funds raised were used to purchase
medical equipment for the treatment
of the condition known as Cooley’s anemia and Thalassemia. Several hospitals
across the island of Crete continue to
use this equipment to provide life saving treatments to thousands of patients
each year.
Over the years, the achievements of
Dr. Kopidakis became a celebration for
the entire Greek community. We came
to love him for his commitment and
compassion to his patients, his warm
friendship, and his invaluable contributions to society. He showed us that
everything is possible with real sacrifice
and unwavering dedication. He was a
remarkable hero who made a difference in people’s lives each and every
day and a true testimony to his promise
as a physician. Many Greek families, unable to afford care or unable to speak
the language turned to him for help.
Never once did he turn a patient away.
He offered them medical care, financial
support, friendship and kindness that is
rarely found in our society today.
Dr. Kopidakis offered so much to
our Greek Community. He never forgot
his Greek Orthodox faith, Greek history
and language and his Cretan heritage.
He always supported the mission to
carry on our Cretan culture and legacy
and we are forever proud and grateful
to have called him our friend.
Dr. Emmanuel G. Kopidakis is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Marianna
Kopidakis and sons Thomas of Naples,
Florida and Dr. George Kopidakis with
his wife Joyce and two daughters,
Nicole and Victoria of Springfield,
Vermont.
The board, on behalf of the members of the Cretans Fraternity, “The
White Mountains” extends its deepest
sympathies to his beloved wife, children and grandchildren.

Οικογενειακό Μνημόνιο του
αείμνηστου γιατρού, Μανώλη Κοπιδάκη
Χιονοθύελλες δεν γνωρίζομε στην Κρήτη. Βρεθήκαμε
στην Πενσυλβάνια τ’ αδέλφια του με την οικογένειά του
και τους φίλους του να τον συνοδεύομε μέσα σ’ ένα πυκνό
λευκό σύννεφο στην τελευταία του κατοικία. Ο Μανώλης
Κοπιδάκης του Γεωργίου και της Βικτωρίας ήταν το πρώτο
παιδί της οικογένειάς μας. Γεννήθηκε τον Απρίλη του 1931
στο ορεινό χωριό Άνω Ασίτες Μαλεβυζίου, 22 χιλιόμετρα
από το Ηράκλειο Κρήτης. Οι μπαλοτιές και οι πανηγυρισμοί
συνόδευσαν την γέννηση του πρωτογιού. Υπήρξε, κατά τις
διηγήσεις του πατέρα μας, αρκετά ζωηρό παιδί και η τότε
δασκάλα του χωριού Ζωή Μπαντουβά, στενή φίλη της
μητέρας μας, τον πήρε ένα χρόνο νωρίτερα στο σχολείο
για να βοηθήσει τη μητέρα μας που ανέτρεφε το δεύτερο
γιό της. Δεν πέρασε πολύς καιρός και η δασκάλα είδε πως
ο Μανώλης, μικρότερος από τους μαθητές της κανονικής
τάξης, άγραφος στο σχολείο, ήταν πρώτος στα μαθήματα.
Έμεινε πρώτος σ’ όλη του τη ζωή όπου και να βρέθηκε.
Στη Γερμανική κατοχή οι ομάδες Μπαντουβά και
Πετρακογιώργη βρισκόταν συχνά στα βουνά του χωριού
μας. Ο πατέρας μας συνεργάτης των ανταρτών φόρτωνε το
γαϊδούρι τρόφιμα και εμπιστευόταν το μικρό Μανώλη να τ’
ανεβάζει στα λημέρια τους.
Ως φοιτητής, πέρα από την άριστη πορεία των
σπουδών του, συμμετείχε στα συχνά συλλαλητήρια για
την ανεξαρτησία της Κύπρου από τους Άγγλους, στις
αποστολές φοιτητών στην επαρχία ή στις σεισμόπληκτες
περιοχές. Ήταν μέλος της Χριστιανικής φοιτητικής ένωσης.
Αυτή την πίστη την ορθόδοξη ο Μανώλης την κράτησε σ’
όλη του τη ζωή σταθερά και ενεργά. Δεν είχε να πει πολλά
έκανε όμως πολλά. Δεν γνώριζε «το όχι» σ’ όποιο του
ζητούσε βοήθεια. Δεν είχε ποτέ χρόνο για τον εαυτό του,
θάλεγα και για την οικογένειά του. Όλο το εικοσιτετράωρο
ήταν προσφορά στο συνάνθρωπο ασθενή. Δούλευε για να
εξαντλήσει κάθε περιθώριο ανακούφισης και σωτηρίας του
αρρώστου του. Κι όταν κάποιος πήγαινε στο ιατρείο του
και ήταν φτωχός, δεν του έπαιρνε χρήματα, του έβαζε και
στην τσέπη κάποια δολάρια. Ο γιατρός Μανώλης πίστεψε
στην ιατρική και την υπηρέτησε με αφοσίωση και πίστη.
Είχε και κάποιο έμφυτο ταλέντο μαζί με το πείσμα του να
είναι πρωτοπόρος σε μεθόδους και στα νέα βήματα της
επιστήμης. Ο γιος του ο Γιώργος, ο χειρουργός, μού λέει
συχνά ότι εγώ στα 13 χρόνια που χειρουργούσα μαζί με
τον πατέρα μου έβλεπα να κάνει πράγματα, ανάλογα με το
περιστατικό, που δεν τα είχα διαβάσει πουθενά. Και τώρα
όταν χειρουργώ με άλλους συναδέλφους και με βλέπουν
να δουλεύω με ρωτούν πού τα διάβασα αυτά και τους
απαντώ: Δεν τα διάβασα, τα έμαθα από τον πατέρα μου.
Η κοινωνική του συνείδηση συμβάδιζε πάντα με την
αξία της ιατρικής επιστήμης ως προσφορά στον άνθρωπο.
Θυμάμαι από δευτεροετής φοιτητής, όταν τα καλοκαίρια
κατέβαινε στο χωριό, από το πρωί μέχρι το βράδυ τον
ζητούσαν οι χωριανοί για βοήθεια με μεγάλη εμπιστοσύνη.
Όταν μάλιστα μετά από πολλά χρόνια ερχόταν από
την Αμερική, το σπίτι μας γινόταν ιατρείο γιατί, εκτός από
τους χωριανούς που ερχόταν και προληπτικά να τους δει,
μαζευόταν καθημερινά άνθρωποι και από άλλα κοντινά
χωριά. Αυτό του το αναγνώρισαν. Στο χωριό μας σ’ ένα
φυσικό βράχο χάραξαν την προσφορά του και ονομάτισαν
ένα μεγάλο δρόμο Λεωφόρο Ιατρού Εμμανουήλ Κοπιδάκη.
Ως οικογένεια παραδοσιακή δεν θέλαμε να φύγει
για την Αμερική. Πάντα τον λαχταρούσαμε και πάντα
περιμέναμε να γυρίσει. Όμως αυτός, όπως μας ομολογούσε
ήθελε την ιατρική να την εξαντλήσει σε βάθος και σε εύρος
κι αυτό νομίζω το έκανε στο Νοσοκομείο Κένεντυ στο New
Jersey. Το καταλάβαμε από τον τρόπο που τον τίμησε το
Νοσοκομείο του, με χάλκινη υπόμνηση, με χειρουργείο και
σεμινάρια χειρουργικής στ’ όνομά του .
Το New Jersey το αγαπήσαμε και μείς ως οικογένεια.
Σε δύσκολα ιατρικά περιστατικά βοηθηθήκαμε. Ερχόμαστε
συχνά γιατί δεν χωρίσαμε ποτέ από το μεγάλο μας αδελφό
που υπήρξε ο συνδετικός κρίκος της οικογένειάς μας. Και
τώρα στον επίλογο της ζωής του μας κάλεσε εμένα, με
τη γυναίκα μου τη Μαρία, τον αδελφό μας τον Γιάννη με
τη γυναίκα του την Καλλιόπη. Την άλλη μέρα Κυριακή,
μάς πήγε ο ίδιος στην εκκλησία. Παιδικές αναμνήσεις.
Αναπόληση μιας ζωής. Κρυφή η πίκρα του αναμενόμενου
χωρισμού. Κάποια μέρα κι αυτός και η γυναίκα του η
Μαρία μάς υπενθύμισαν το ευχέλαιον της εκκλησίας
μας. Καλέσαμε τον πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο, εφημέριο της
ορθόδοξης εκκλησίας της Αγίας Αικατερίνης του Naples.
Παρακολούθησε συγκεντρωμένος και συντετριμμένος
την ακολουθία του ευχελαίου, δέχτηκε το μυστήριο της
Θείας Ευχαριστίας, κοινώνησε σώμα και αίμα Χριστού. Το
απόγευμα της Πέμπτης μετά το ευχέλαιο μάς είπε απλά
: Να ξέρετε πως το ευχέλαιο και η θεία κοινωνία ήταν η
σφραγίδα της ζωής μου. Σε σας αφήνω μία παρακαταθήκη.
Θα πάτε στην προς Θεσσαλονικείς Α΄ επιστολή του
Παύλου και θα έχετε πάντα υπόψη σας : « Ου θέλομεν δέ
υμάς αγνοείν, αδελφοί, περί των κεκοιμημένων, ίνα μή

Το Σάββατο ημέρα των τριών Ιεραρχών μάς έφυγε απλά,
όπως απλή και καθαρή ήταν και η ζωή του.
Πικραθήκαμε που μας έφυγε. Σας τον αφήσαμε,
όμως, στα χώματα της Αμερικής αδιαμαρτύρητα γιατί την
αγάπησε και την υπηρέτησε πιστά. Εξ άλλου δίπλα του θα
μένει πάντα η πιστή γυναίκα του Μαρία που είναι γνήσια
Πολωνέζα, αλλά έγινε και γνήσια Κρητικιά. Την αγαπήσαμε
όπως και αυτός την αγάπησε. Ο Γιώργος ο γιος του, η
Ζωή και τα εγγόνια του Νικόλ και Βικτωρία, ο Θωμάς, ο
δεύτερος γιος του θα τιμούν πάντα το όνομά του στον τόπο
που πρόσφερε τη ζωή του.

Lefka Oree
A Golden Past —A Rich Future
Prior to World War I, isolated Greek families and bachelors began to settle in Modesto, Turlock, Stevinson, Livingston, Ripon, Manteca, Stockton and the Lodi areas of central
California. Most of these new arrivals were farmers, and only
a few actually lived in Modesto or Turlock. In the 1920’s,
the number of Greek-Americans in the Stanislaus/Merced
County area increased. As early as 1930, a significant segment of Modesto’s Greek community was composed of
Cretans, having migrated from Utah and Wyoming.
Most of those Cretans who wanted to share a fraternal fellowship had to join the “Epimenides” chapter of the
Pancretan Association in San Francisco. Attending meetings
for “Epimenides” became difficult, if not impossible, as it
was a day-long journey to the city.
As the desire to maintain Cretan traditions mounted,
32 Modesto-area Cretans became charter members and
organized the MODESTO chapter of the PAA in 1936. At the
suggestion of the late EMMANUEL CAFCALAS, the name
adopted for the new Cretan club was “Lefka Oree”, or White
Mountains—as Crete’s western mountains are known. The
first President was NICK TZITZIKALIS.

The goal of the Lefka Oree was to unite the Cretans of
the valley in a common cause—to maintain their heritage,
culture, and values. They held annual dinner-dances and
countless picnics. The picnics were held in Lodi at Mickey’s
Grove, in Modesto at the Old Fisherman’s Club and on
sites further down the valley. The dinner-dances were held
at the Annunciation Church Hall. Until his passing, the
club was fortunate to have had BILL DIMOTAKIS with his
renowned lyra, play for most of those years. Those pioneers
-- the protopori -- stood fast and ready to promote the
Pancretan cause. They lived by and for its existence. They
all toiled to keep the organization alive and prosperous for
theirs and future generations.

Many of the protopori played significant roles in promoting the PAA cause. However, Harry Joseph and John
Kocolas were most instrumental. Harry Joseph probably
had the greatest single influence on Lefka Oree in its first
30 years – holding every single local office and also becoming a district governor. Vice President John Kocolas enlisted
over 25 members in one campaign including past National
President Gus S. Pallios.
Through the years Lefka Oree has been blessed
with outstanding leaders who have sought to bring out the

Lefka Oree has been a vibrant chapter in its entire 74
year history.
In this period, the Modesto Cretans have hosted two
most successful National Pancretan Conventions – in 1962
and 1995. The conclaves have been acclaimed to be two
of the finest national conventions ever held. Three distinguished district conferences have also been hosted in
Modesto in addition to three national PAA board meetings.
Lefka Oree, along with Sisterhood Eleftheria and
Apogoni Tis Kritis, sponsors a yearly horosperida dinner
dance. Musicians from Greece are imported specifically for
this dance—where, up to seven hundred have gathered
from near and far to envelope the Cretan spirit.
Remembering those who have left a legacy in the
fight for freedom, the club also hosts a memorial Sunday
for those who valiantly gave of their life at the Monastery of
Arkadi, those who bravely fought and died during the Battle
of Crete during WW II, and also in the memory of legendary
Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. After church services
the club hosts all parishioners for a memorial luncheon.
Maintaining the Cretan filoxenia, Lefka Oree, along
with the other local Cretan clubs, has also hosted the Annual
Annunciation Parish Picnic for the last 24 years; a day where
everyone enjoys the beautiful Holy Liturgy in the park, a
wonderful steak luncheon, followed by continuing sports,
games, dancing and fellowship.
Always acknowledging the Church as the focal point
of the Cretan family, the club has been most supportive
of Modesto’s Annunciation parish. The membership has
promoted our culture and heritage, exemplified values, nurtured philanthropy and maintained the family bond through
the church. As the parish has endured financial needs, Lefka
Oree has also been quick to respond.
• The entire proceeds of the 1962 convention were
donated to the Annunciation parish to erase the mortgage
on newly acquired land bought to house a new Sunday
school structure.
• Gave a sizeable donation to help offset the expenditures of the church and hall remodeling.
• Gave a sizable donation to help offset costs of the
new roof on the church complex.
• Donated the hand-carved oak pangari when the
church was being redecorated.
• Along with Sisterhood Eleftheria and Apogoni Tis
Kritis donated two wall icons.
• Donates yearly to the St. Basil’s Academy through
the Vasilopita.
• Through a yearly Cretan retreat at St. Nicholas
Ranch, gives substantial aid to support the Ranch.
• Sponsors children for the annual JC’s ‘Clothe a
Child’ drive at Christmas.
• Donates to orphanages, monasteries and hospitals
in Crete.
• Sponsors dialysis machines for Cooley’s Anemia
patients in Crete.
• Sponsors 3 to 5 scholarships yearly for local youth
in memory of the late Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Papageorge, Gus S.
Pallios, and Eleftherios Venizelos.

• Donates to aid devastation in Greece during fires
and storms.
Lefka Oree meets monthly except for the summer
months. During May/June the clubs hold an outing at a local
restaurant in honor of Mother’s Day/Father Day. At yearend, a Christmas Party is also held at the Rev. Father Emmanuel Papageorge Cultural Center for families of all three
local chapters. The 150 attendees come for food, drink and a
special visit from Santa Claus.
Lefka Oree is proud of this golden history of love,
dedication, and nurturing of our family values that our
founding fathers—the protopori—have laid in the foundation for this generation and future generations of Lefka
Oree members to live an even richer life in our beautiful
horio of Modesto – “the Little Crete of America.”

The Detroit Cretan Ladies Society is very excited to share

We wish perastika to Lola Katzourakis of Chania, Crete,
sister of our former president, Amalia Kotsifakis. We also
would like to send get well wishes to Mike Vlastos, son of
Diamanto Verykokakis and brother of Helen Ranney and
Erasmia Novotny. Mike underwent surgery and has been

Cretan Wedding
On Sunday July 18, 2010, at the quaint, picturesque, St.
Nicholas Greek Orthodox
Church, which sits approximately 250 yards from
shore in Giourgoupolis
Bay in the Prefecture of
Rethymnon and is accessed
only by a narrow stone sea
wall, Michelle Lee Harrison became the bride of
Anthony George “Tony”
Pashos.
Michelle was born in
Spring Valley, IL, on June 28,
1982. She is the daughter of Bruce and Patricia Harrison of McNabb, IL. Michelle
earned both her Bachelor’s (2004) and Master’s (2006) degrees in Speech Language Pathology from the University of
Illinois. Following her graduation, she established a private
practice in Jacksonville Beach, FL, providing speech therapy
services for a pediatric population.
Tony was born in Palos Hills, IL, on August 3, 1980. He
is the son of George and Despina (Maropakis) Pashos of
Lockport , IL. Tony graduated from Lockport Township High
School in 1998, distinguishing himself in athletics and being
awarded a four-year football scholarship to the University
of Illinois, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History, repeatedly winning All-Big Ten as well as Pre-season
All-America and Academic All-America football honors. Tony
has played on the offensive line in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens for 4 years, the Jacksonville Jaguars for 2 years,
the San Francisco 49ers for 1 year, and recently signed a
3-year contract with the Cleveland Browns.
Tony’s University of Illinois football teammate, Pete
Christofilakos, of Springfield, IL, served as Best Man and

Koumbaro. Maids of Honor were Nicole Harrison, sister of
the bride, and Georgia Pashos, sister of the groom. Groomsmen were Haralambos “Bobby” Pashos and George Pashos,
brothers of the groom.
Tony and Michelle are currently residing in the Cleveland,
OH, area. Following the close of the NFL season, they plan
to return to their home in Jacksonville Beach. They also
maintain a summer home in Megala Horafia, Crete, which
overlooks Souda Bay and the surrounding area, and is just
minutes from the village of Kalyves, the birthplace of Tony’s
mother, Despina, and the ancestral home of the Maropakis
family
Following the marriage ceremony at St. Nicholas Church,
approximately 350 guests joined the bride and groom and
their families in celebration of the blessed event at an
authentic Cretan wedding reception, complete with the
traditional bridal dance and accompanied by Cretan music as
well as an American DJ. The reception was held at Kondaros’
Taverna near the village of Vrisses, and the Cretan music was
played by Manolis Kondaros and his syngrotima. Included
among the guests were approximately 90 relatives, friends
and teammates who had traveled from the U.S.
A festive, grand glendi was enjoyed by all.

and Tony. May the Lord bless their marriage with many years
of health and happiness....and children just like them!

Μας επεσκέφθη ο Πρόεδρος της ΠΕΑ κ. Θεόδωρος
Μανουσάκης μετά της συζύγου του. Eυχαριστούμε όλους
