Charlie Hunter’s Story
Charles Godfrey Hunter was the youngest of 7 children born in
Magherafelt, Co Derry Ireland. to Dr Mitchell and Jane Hunter, 30th
January, 1904. Feeling that Ireland was too cold and that one had to
wear too many clothes there Charlie came to live in Australia. He lived
and worked in Burke till 1939.
Charlie was a ‘Thirty Niner’ joining the Australian Army in November
1939. Initially he was a member of the 2/3 Battalion AIF Sixth Division,
later being transferred to the 16th Brigade HQ. His name is on the
War Memorial in the park in Bourke and on the national POW wall in
Ballarat Victoria.
In 1941 Charlie took part in the Middle East Campaign where they
captured Bardia,Tobruk and Benghazi. After defeating the Italians
Charlie was transferred to Greece with the Sixth Division to assist
the Greeks defend their country against the German invasion. On
arrival in Athens they were greeted with great applause, enthusiasm
and appreciation by the Greeks. After embarking in Athens (port of
Piraeus) the allies moved north through Greece to establish their
defences against the Germans. Although the ANZACs fought gallantly
they lacked air cover and were greatly outnumbered by superior
German forces with far superior equipment on the ground. The Allies
had no choice but evacuation. During this campaign Charlie described
‘driving over narrow winding mountain roads many with large craters
from bombing, often at night with no lights on (lights would have
alerted the German planes to their location) was no picnic. The
German stukkas harried us every day in ou retreat south.’
The Greek campaign was a disaster for the ANZAC because they were
exhausted from the Nth African campaign;, late arriving in Greece and
with only half the troops they had been promised by Britain; totally
under equipped and had virtually no air cover support. Most of the
Allies were evacuated to Cairo, but some were forced to go to Crete.
Charlie was on the ‘Cost Rica’ which was sunk but fortunately the
destroyers moved in and managed to rescue most of the soldiers and
then landed them at Suda Bay. They had lost most of their weapons,
ammunition, and most of their heavy equipment was left behind in
Greece. Some of them had onlythe clothes they were wearing.
Crete had great strategic significance for both the Germans and
the Allies. Hitler had in mind once Crete was taken, to then use his
paratroopers to subdue Cyprus, and then launch attacks on the Suez,
Palestine and Iraq. General Student’s plan was to also link up with
Rommel trapping the Middle East Allied Force in a pincer movement.
These plans were subsequently thrown into disarray by the events in
Crete.
The Battle of Crete was the first time an air attack by paratroopers
had been used to invade a country. These were General Student’s
crack German paratroopers. They attacked Suda Bay and Chania, and
the 3 airfields along the north coast: Maleme, Retimo and Heraklion.
The Germans met strong opposition from the troops on the ground
(ANZACs, Greeks and Cretans). Many of the paratroopers were shot
as they came down – others after they landed – and the Germans
suffered heavy losses. The New Zealand battalions tried desperately to
hold Maleme but were eventually overcome, resulting in the Germans
being able to bring in reinforcements in the way of troops, supplies,

weapons, and tanks,
which ultimately
sealed the fate of
Crete. The Australians
actually defeated their
opposition at Retimo
but were forced to
surrender when the motorised reinforcements and tanks arrived from
the west.
This was also the first time the civilian population jojned in the
fighting - men, woman and children came to fight the Germans with
what ever they could find – garden forks, shovels, axes, kitchen knives
whatever. The Germans later carried out savage reprisals against the
Crete people both for their resistance in the Battle of Crete and during
the occupation. After 12 days fierce fighting the Germans managed
to defeat the allied forces, but at a heavy cost, and the paratroopers
were never again used as a surprise invading force..
The retreating Allies did manage to evacuate most of their troops –
from Heraklion and Sphakia. However not all the troops got evacuated
as the Royal Navy carried out their last trip on May 31st, leaving
many Allied troops behind on the beach. Charlie Hunter was asked
to join some of the 7th Battalion to fight the rear guard action on
the cliffs above Sphakia before being told to return to beach where
the surrender took place. He was now a prisoner in enemy occupied
country, and along with the others was forced to march back over the
mountains to the POW camp at Skines.
Conditions in the POW camp at Skines were horrendous and when
Charlie heard from one of guards that the plan was to ship the
prisoners back to the mainland (Salonica & then Germany) – Charlie
decided that was not for him, so he escaped from the camp and made
his way up into the mountains. He and a couple of others who escaped
soon after, managed to get up into the rugged mountain region on the
White Mountains – to a small village called Koustoyeriko. He lived and
worked there with the villagers – basically living in caves high in the
mountains and spending the occasional night in the home of one of
the village families. Living conditions were pretty bad, their clothing
& boots wore out, food was scarce, much of the time having little
to eat for days on end, with snails and stewed grass part of the fare.
Villagers shared their meagre supplies and food when they had some
but they had little more than the soldiers. Even in freezing conditions
blankets, coats, boots etc. were a ‘pipe dream’ and the Winter of 1942
proved to be one of the coldest for thirty years. Villagers found to be
harbouring or helping allied soldiers were shot and whole villages
burnt to the ground and bombed.
Charlie was a humble man who didn’t talk about the horrors of war
except to say how wonderful the people of Crete were to the allied
soldiers; how generous, giving and courageous they were – nor did
he talk about what he did. It has been contact with families from the
village (as well as my husband Neil’s research) that has given us the
information we now have about what Charlie did on Crete – otherwise
we would never have known half of it. In connection with his
admiration for the Cretan people he did mention a few incidents:

a. Charlie told Colleen that when he was being sheltered by Petros
Georgiakakis and his family, their little son George used to save
some of his food and give it to Charlie, but Petros’s wife said that it
was Charlie who used to save part of his food for George.
b. On an occasion when Charlie had sought refuge from the weather
in a church – the priest arrived and after talking with Charlie (who
by this time spoke rather good Greek) the priest said ‘Your shirt is
in rags – you need a new one. This alter cloth would make a really
good shirt and I won’t be here this afternoon.’
c. On another occasion Charlie and 2 other Aussies had sought refuge
from the rain in another church. Charlie had been carrying a few
photos of himself and others soldiers training in the Middle East.
He had emptied his pockets and put the water soaked contents
including the photos on the window -sill. Some German soldiers
arrived looking for shelter and started questioning Charlie and the
others. The other 2 distracted the Germans by telling them a story
about Charlie – ‘don’t worry about him, he is a simpleton – not all
there, a bit crazy – you know, just ignore him’. The Germans nodded
and walked out and went on their way, thankfully without noticing
the incriminating photos.
In late1942 a boat carrying British Intelligence officer Xan Fielding
(later Major Fielding) to Crete, sank prior to landing. Charlie Hunter,
John Simcoe and Frank Ezzy were able to locate the wreck, swim to
it, then dive repeatedly to recover the essential equipment, and were
then able to repair the radio set that was essential for the Intelligence
Operations. Quote from Xan Fielding’s book‘Hide & seek’, ‘The setback
we have suffered from shipwreck seemed insignificant compared
to the conditions in which the three of them had been living for the
last 18 months. Though we had lost practically everything except the
clothes we stood up in, our shirts were at least unpatched and our
boots intact; while these men were bare foot and in rags.’
During the two years he spent in this area Charlie worked with the
villagers doing their regular tasks and working with Vassili Paterakis
to set up and organise the resistance fighters in that area. On a trip
to Crete in 2004 Vassili’s son Ionnias showed us where his father and
Charlie stored the weapons for the partisans. When asked how he
knew about Charlie, Ionnias replied that he heard about Charlies as a
boy sitting on his father’s knee.
In 1943 Tom Moir (from MI.9, an escape organisation) was given the
task of organising an evacuation to take the remaining ‘stragglers’
off the island and on to Alexandria. Before he left on an associated
mission he put Charlie in charge to complete the organization – should
he not return. He was captured and taken prisoner while on the
mission so the organization passed to Charlie who then spent several
weeks contacting British Intelligence headquarters in Cairo though the
ISLD station set they had set up high in a mountain cave and organised
the boat for this evacuation. Chartlie noted‘ I requested a boat large
enough to evacuate all British Stragglers, Cypriots and some Greeks
as the evacuation a month previously had been cancelled’. During
this embarkation Charlie did not endear himself to some evacuees
when he insisted that all who were leaving the island take off their
boots, coats and any other non-essential clothing, as these items
were desperately needed by the Cretan people. In all some 52 were
taken off on the boat, and Petros Georgiakakis, his son George, and
a group of the partisans escorted the group down to the beach at
Tripiti. We are now good friends with both the surviving Paterakis and
Georgiakakis families, as well as a number of other wonderful crete
people.
On reaching Alexandra after spending 2 years in such adverse
conditions, Charlie’s health was so poor that he was repatriated back
to Australia. He continued to correspond with, and to send food
parcels to the villagers for many years after he returned to Australia.
He and his wife Francis also assisted Greek families who came into
their district, to settle in and adjust to Australian culture and mores.
In 1944 Charlie was Mentioned in Despatches for ‘Gallantry and
Distinguished Service in the Middle East’(primarily on Crete).
Nearly 70 years later the people of Greece and Crete are still
appreciative of the fact that the Australians and New Zealanders came
from the other side of the world to help them defend their country.
Charlie described the people of Crete - ‘During the darkest and most
dangerous times before I left Crete these friends continued to assist
me as staunchly as ever, even to the extent to incurring opposition
from a number of their own countrymen of the village, who although
loyal to British, were not desirous of running the risk of having British
soldiers in the village…. I would like to stress the point that apart from
their outstanding courage, their unselfish devotion in sharing their
very limited food necessitated themselves and their families going
hungry for long periods was truly heroic’.
In 2004 Neil and I went to the village of Koustoyeriko and presented
the people with a plaque thanking them for their protection of he and
many other Allied soldiers; unexpectedly they presented us with a
plaque of appreciation, thanking Charlie for his work and protection of
their village over 63 years before.
A past president of The Crete Association of NSW said that ‘I know
that Charlie was not only a veteran, he was also a hero to the people
of Koustoyeriko.’
After returning to Australia, Charlie married, and had 2 children,
myself and my brother Frank. He became a farmer at Boorowa where
he lived for the next 20 years. Failing health necessitated him selling
the property – he returned for a holiday to his original homeland,
Ireland, with my mother and was planning to return via Crete but
sadly passed away beforehand. He was a great father, husband and
wonderful, humble, calm and generous man.

Teaching Activities
The Greek campaign, in which Australian, British and New
Zealand troops supported Greek forces against a German
invasion, was ill-planned, disastrous and short.
Use the websites and references above to research the
background to the answers to the following questions.
Greece entered the Second World War on 28 October 1940,
when the Italian army invaded from Albania. The Greek army
proved much tougher than expected and the Italians were
expelled from Greece and driven back to Albania. Germany,
led by Hitler, was forced to send its own forces to overcome
Greece, and on 6 April 1941 German forces attacked Greece
and Yugoslavia simultaneously. The Allied forces, vastly
outnumbered, were evacuated to Crete and to Egypt after
conducting a fighting withdrawal from northern Greece to the
southern part of the country.
The Germans then attacked Crete on 20 May 1941 in their
largest airborne assault of the Second World War.
Britain was unable to commit more troops to the island due to
the pressure of operations in North Africa, leaving the Allied
forces in Crete ill-equipped and facing considerable difficulties in
defending the island.
Most of the Allied force had arrived exhausted from the failed
Greek campaign with little equipment and too few weapons.
However, while tired, they were not demoralised and by the
end of the battle’s first day, the Germans had not had the
success they expected and had suffered far greater losses than
anticipated. Only at the western end of Máleme airfield did
German paratroops manage to set up a viable base. At first a
German victory was uncertain and the campaign could have
gone either way as Australian, British, New Zealand and Greek
soldiers fought the Germans in a savage battle for possession
of the island. However, with Máleme airfield in German hands,
supplies and reinforcements poured in and the campaign swung
against the Allies.
The result was another evacuation by sea of defeated Allied soldiers.

1. Who said that the defence of Greece was a “great risk in a
good cause”? Do you agree with them? Why or why not? Take
into account the location of Greece and Crete, the alliance of
countries and the intent of the enemy in your answer.
2. Print a map of Greece and Crete. Mark on the map some of
the key places, including the Sea of Crete, the Kaso Strait, the
Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea. Also include the towns of
Maleme, Chania, Heraklion and Rethymno.
3. From your reading about the battles draw up a timeline of
events from April to June 1941. Include the German invasion,
the battle for Greece, the evacuation from the mainland, the
‘Creforce’ troops on the island of Crete, the battle for Crete
and the final evacuation.
4. List the problems that were encountered by the Australians
in assisting the Greeks and the Cretans to defend themselves
against the invading German army.

War 1939–1945 website. How important was Horrie to the
men who found him and what did they do with him when

8. Ian Rhodes (1912–1967), a sheep farmer from Victoria,
became a naval officer and won the Conspicious Gallantry
Medal for his actions on the HMS Kashmir on 23 May 1941.
Write a paragraph as the officer writing up the citation
describing his actions and bravery. What is significant about

9. On the 70th anniversary, design a new memorial to honour
those who died in the Battles for Greece and Crete. Create
a concept for the memorial including the wording, images
and messages you wish to present. Where in Australia or

As an Australian, of Greek background who’s parents were
born in Crete just before the start of WW2 , I have grown up
hearing and accepting the heroic struggles and sacrifices that
were made in Crete during the German invasion in May 1941.
May we and future generations never live to experience such
wars or battles ever again , but from all the books I have read,
and all the movies I have seen nothing represents the events
of 1941 better than the following quotes.
“Until now we know that the Greeks fought like hero’s , from
know on we shall say that HERO’S FIGHT LIKE GREEKS ……..
(Winston Churchill, June 1941)
“While the German paratroopers were advancing on Galatas
, a villager , Emanuel Theodorakis was shooting at them .
A wounded paratrooper returned fire seriously wounding
Theodorakis . An unarmed escort of Theodorakis , Adonis
Fidilakis killed the German with a large stone , took his
weapon and continued to fight ……These Cretans fought the
invader with anything available RESISTANCE WITH NAILS AND
TEETH ………..

Over the past 15 months as President of the of the Cretan
Youth Federation, I have embraced my role and learnt more
about the History of my fore fathers than ever imagined.
Travelling to Crete for the Wold Cretan Convention
Representing Australia and New Zealand made me even more
thankful for those who fought and fell and have today given
me the honour to enjoy the beauty and culture that is the
Island of Crete.
Having gathered this year for the 70th anniversary of
the Battle of Crete, let us pay homage and respect to the
memories of all the Greek, Australian and New Zealand and
allied freedom fighters, and particularly those brave civilian
Cretan men and women who fought valiantly and many of
whom shed their blood to defend the timeless principles of
freedom and democracy.
I am indeed privileged and honoured to say that my blood
stems from the heroic history of Crete.

This year we commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle
of Crete and the Greek Campaign, a landmark in our history,
a decisive turning point in the operations of World War II. We
pay tribute to the strength, courage, dignity and human spirit
demonstrated by all those touched by these events in 1941.
In April and May 1941, Australian, New Zealand and British
troops joined the Hellenic Army in their fight for democracy
and freedom - the common bond between our nations. These
troops fought bravely to stop the German invasion of Greece
reaching the island of Crete.
This event is of particular importance to the relations between
Australia and Greece, not only because we admire the courage
and bravery of those who participated in the Battle of Crete and
the Greek Campaign, but also because it was the catalyst for the
strengthening of our bilateral relations.
Although strong bonds of friendship between Australia and
Greece were formed during the campaigns of World War I, the
Battle of Crete further strengthened these bonds and they have
been reinforced over the last decades.

It remains the duty of both the peoples of our nations to
preserve the lasting inspiration of the Battle of Crete and Greek
Campaign and to pass it on to our future generations for a
better world. The spirit of the commemoration is not to bring
to memory the sacrifices and events only, but the reasoning of
the blood shed for the highest humane ideals of dignity, respect,
personality, freedom and Democracy.

Συμπληρώνονται φέτος 70 χρόνια από τη Μάχη της Κρήτης,
την μάχη που άλλαξε την Ιστορία. Στη μνήμη όλων μας
ξαναγυρίζουν οι στιγμές που έζησε η Κρήτη στις 20 Μαίου του
1941. Στιγμές πολέμου, βαρβαρότητας και θανάτου αλλά και
στιγμές ένδοξου αγώνα, ηρωϊσμού και αυτοθυσίας.
Στη Μάχη της Κρήτης οι Έλληνες, Βρετανοί, Αυστραλοί και
Νεοζηλανδοί στρατιώτες έκαναν το καθήκον τους πολεμώντας
με γενναιότητα και αυταπάρνηση. Έδωσαν άνιση μάχη,
προσφέροντας στον κοινό συμμαχικό αγώνα πολύτιμες ημέρες
αντίστασης και καθυστέρησης. Έδωσαν μάθημα ανδρείας και
ομοψυχίας.
Σε αυτή τη μάχη, όμως, πολέμησαν στο πλευρό του ελληνικού
στρατού και των συμμάχων και οι απλοί Κρητικοί με κάθε
λογής μέσα: όπλα, μαχαίρια, σπαθιά. Και είναι πρωτοφανές να
πολεμά ο άμαχος πληθυσμός με τέτοια αυτοθυσία για να μην
σκλαβωθεί το νησί του, για να μην χάσει την ελευθερία του.
Ο αγώνας του κρητικού λαού συνεχίσθηκε και πέρα από τον
Μάιο του 1941 για τέσσερα ολόκληρα χρόνια, μέχρι τον Μάιο
του 1945. Αμέτρητοι οι νεκροί και οι εκτελεσμένοι μέσα στα
χρόνια αυτά, κάθε χωριό και ένας θρύλος, κάθε οικογένεια και
μία ιστορία, κάθε γωνιά ποτισμένη με αίμα.
Eπέτειος τιμής σήμερα και ολόκληρη η Κρήτη γιορτάζει, για να
θυμούνται οι παλιοί και να μαθαίνουν και οι νεώτεροι από τους
νεοριζίτικους στίχους:
«Γιέ μου, τον τόπο τουτονέ να τον εκαμαρώνεις
γιατί είχε αϊτούς και κάθουντου κι αγναντεύαν τον καμπό,
γκρεμνά, μιτάτα και λαγκά γιέ μου τα γονικά σου,
γιέ μου ποτέ μην τ’ αρνηθείς.
Καμάρι νάναι ο τόπος σου και η μάνα που σε γέννα
Μιά φλέβα νάχεις στη καρδιά, νάχει δικών των αίμα.
Καμάρι μου είναι ο τόπος μου κι η μάνα που με γέννα

Εκ μέρους του Δ.Σ. του Παγκοσμίου Συμβουλίου Κρητών
θα ήθελα να απευθύνω στους Κρήτες που ζουν και
σταδιοδρομούν στην μακρινή Ωκεανία θερμές ευχές και καλή
επιτυχία στις εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις της Ομοσπονδίας σας
επ’ ευκαιρία, της 70ης επετείου από την θρυλική Μάχη της
Κρήτης. Οι εκδηλώσεις αυτές όπως με έχετε ήδη ενημερώσει,
θα ξεκινήσουν στην Ωκεανία και θα τερματιστούν στους
ιερούς τόπους που δόθηκαν οι Μάχες αυτές, στην ιδιαίτερή
μας Πατρίδα την Κρήτη.
Να είστε βέβαιοι ότι στην Κρήτη, οι Φορείς του Νησιού
περιμένουν να τιμήσουν τους Κρήτες αλλά ιδιαίτερα τους
Αυστραλούς και Νεοζηλανδούς μαχητές που πρόκειται
να επισκεφτούν το νησί και να θυμηθούν μαζί με τους
απογόνους τους που θα τους συνοδεύουν, το πώς ένας
άνθρωπος χιλιάδες μίλια μακριά από το σπίτι του, μάχεται για
την ελευθερία μιας πατρίδας που δεν είναι δική του, δίνοντας
ότι πολυτιμότερο διαθέτει, τη ζωή του. Αιώνια Τιμή και Δόξα
τους αξίζει!
Κλείνοντας θα ήθελα να καλέσω όλους τους Κρητικούς να
στηρίζουν ενεργά τους Κρητικούς Συλλόγους και Ομοσπονδίες

της περιοχής τους. Ας εμπνευστούμε όλοι από τις ιδέες του
Παγκοσμίου Συμβουλίου Κρητών που συνοψίζονται στο: “μια
Κρήτη δυνατή, μέσα σε μια Ελλάδα ισχυρή και υπολογίσιμη”.

Ο Στέφανος Βορδώνης με καταγωγή από Ρέθυμνο (ΛΑΜΠΙΝΗ
ΑΓΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΥ)παρόλο που τα πρώτα χρόνια της ζωής
του τα πέρασε μακριά από την Κρήτη , διαμόρφωσε το
χαραχτήρα σύμφωνα με τα ήθη και έθιμα ,την νοοτροπία και
την κουλτούρα της Κρήτης. Σημαντικό ρόλο σε αυτό έπαιξαν οι
γονείς του που ήταν κοντά στην παράδοση .
Ο Μιχάλης Παχάκης κατάγετε από την Μεσσαρά Ηρακλείου
,είναι είκοσι έξη χρονών με πλούσια παρουσία στον χώρο
της Κρητικής μουσικής. Έχει συνεργαστεί με σημαντικούς
καλλιτέχνες και δισκογραφικά και στο πάλκο. Συνεργασία
σταθμός για αυτόν είναι η τρίχρονη μέχρι στιγμής συνεργασία
με τον Στέφανο Βορδώνη που τους ενώνει η αμοιβαία
εκτίμηση και ο σεβασμός. Ο Μιχάλης Παχάκης είναι από τους
πιο ταλαντούχους λαουτιέρηδες στην Κρήτη και το μέλλον
σίγουρα του ανήκει.
Η κρητική μουσική τον κέρδισε από πολύ μικρή ηλικία
καθώς στα τριάντα επτά του χρόνια έχει δεκαοκτώ χρόνια
καλλιτεχνικής πορείας ,με δέκα δισκογραφικές δουλειές και
σημαντικές εμφανίσεις εντός και εκτός Ελλάδας.
Η επικοινωνία του με των κόσμο, ο αληθινός χαραχτήρας και
το ιδιαίτερο ταλέντο του ,τον έχουν καταξιώσει στο χώρο της
Κρητικής μουσικής και οι εμφανίσεις του συνοδεύονται από
επιτυχία.

Για άλλη μια φορά οι Κρήτες και γενικά οι Έλληνες της Μελβούρνης θα γιορτάσομε την 70η επέτειο
της Μάχης της Κρήτης . Μια μάχη που ήταν ίσως καθοριστική για τον 2ο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο. Δέκα
ολόκληρα μερόνυχτα οι Γερμανοί χρειάστηκαν να κάμψουν την λυσσώδη αντίσταση των Ελλήνων
Αυστραλών Άγγλων και Νεοζηλανδών.

Οι παλιοί Αυστραλοί που πολέμησαν στην Κρήτη , και οι οποίοι ζουν ακόμη αγαπούν πολύ τους
Κρητικούς και όλους τους Έλληνες , γιατί γνώρισαν από κοντά και κάτω από συνθήκες πολέμου την
ελληνική φιλοξενία, και αυτοθυσία. Οι Κρητικοί με θανάσιμο κίνδυνο της ζωής των απόκρυψαν και
συντήρησαν εκατοντάδες Αυστραλούς και Νεοζηλανδούς που είχαν παγιδευτεί στην Κρήτη μετά το
τέλος της μάχης .
Σαν αυστραλογεννημένοι Έλληνες είμαστε περήφανοι και ευγνωμονούμε όλους εκείνους που με
το αίμα τους θεμελίωσαν την ελληνοαυστραλιανή αυτή φιλία και την οποία καλούμεθα εμείς να
συνεχίσομε και να προάγομε για το καλό όχι μόνο της ελληνικής παροικίας μα και των δύο λαών .
Μέσα από τα λουλουδιασμένα μνήματα των Αυστραλών και Νεοζηλανδών στο Ρέθυμνο και τη
Σούδα μα και των παππούδων μας σε όλη την Κρήτη βγαίνει ένα προγονικό μήνυμα. Ότι η λευτεριά
δεν αγοράζεται μα κερδίζεται με αγώνες και θυσίες . Έχομε χρέος να τους τιμήσομε και να μην τους
ξεχάσομε ποτέ.
Ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη τους .

Ρίγη συγκίνησης και ύψιστης περηφάνειας , μας διακατέχουν για ακόμη μία φορά που ήλθε η
ώρα να αποτίσουμε την πρέπουσα τιμή σε εκείνους που έπεσαν ηρωϊκά μαχόμενοι για το μέγιστο
ανθρώπινο αγαθό, την ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ. Φέτος γιορτάζουμε την 70η Επέτειο της Μάχης της Κρήτης, την
ένδοξη αυτή μάχη που αποτελεί φωτεινό ορόσημο της νεότερης ελληνικής ιστορίας και εμπνέει τις
νεότερες γενιές απανταχού της γης. Αποτελεί επίσης το πιο λαμπρό παράδειγμα ανθρωπισμού και
αυτοθυσίας, δεδομένου ότι οι Κρήτες, χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη έβαζαν συχνά σε κίνδυνο την ίδια τη ζωή
τους προκειμένου να κρύψουν και να φυγαδεύσουν τους συμμάχους Αυστραλούς και Νεοζηλανδούς.

Εμείς, οι Κρήτες, αλλά και όλοι οι Έλληνες της διασποράς, οφείλουμε, με κάθε θυσία να κρατάμε
ζωντανές τις μνήμες της ιστορικής αυτής μάχης, και να μεταδίνουμε τις πανανθρώπινες αξίες που
πηγάζουν από αυτή, στις επόμενες γενιές.
Έχουμε ιερό χρέος να διατηρήσουμε αλώβητη τη σελίδα αυτή της ένδοξης Μάχης της Κρήτης και να
τη μεταδώσουμε στους νεότερους. Πράττοντας αυτό, οφείλουμε παράλληλα να κρατάμε αναμμένη
τη φλόγα των ηθών και εθίμων της ιδιαίτερης πατρίδας μας και να την μεταλαμπαδεύουμε στα νέα
βλαστάρια μας.

Με την ευκαιρία των εκδηλώσεων για την 70η επέτειο της Μάχης της Κρήτης, θα ήθελα να στείλω
ένα θερμό χαιρετισμό στους Κρήτες στην Αυστραλία και στην Νέα Ζηλανδία.
Πριν απο 70 χρόνια Έλληνες, Αυστραλοί και Νεο Ζηλανδοί πολέμησανε μαζί για να ζούμε εμεις
σήμερα ελεύθεροι. Είναι σημαντίκο οι εκδηλώσεις της Μάχης της Κρήτης να συννεχίζονται καθέ
χρόνsο, για να μην λισμονίσουμε όλους που πολεμήσανε για να μπορόυμε να ζούμε ελεύθεροι και να
μπορούμε να κρατάμε τα εθίματα, την γλώσα και την παράδοση των προγόνων μας.
Πρώτα ο θεός θα ξανά ανταμωθούμε πάλι το 2012 στο Σύδνευ, για την ετήσια συνεδρίαση της
Κρητικής Ομοσπνδιάς Αυστραλίας και Νέα Ζηλανδίας

Με την ευκαιρία των εκδηλώσεων του 70ου επετείου της Μάχης της Κρήτης θα ήθελα να στείλω
ένα θερμό χαιρετισμό σε όλους τους Κρήτες του κόσμου και προπαντός στην Αυστραλία και Νέα
Ζηλανδία.
Πάλι και φέτος με περηφάνια και Κρητική λεβεντιά τιμάμε μια πολύ σημαντική επέτειο της ηρωικής
και ιστορικής Μάχη της Κρήτης. Έχουν περάσει 70 χρόνια από τότε που η ελευθερία που εμείς
σήμερα απολαμβάνουμε στήθηκε στο αίμα εκείνον που θυσιάστηκαν στους αγώνες του νησιού μας
πριν τόσα πολλά χρόνια.
Η Κρήτη πάντα θα θυμάται την Μάχη και τους μαχητές της. Και εμείς σαν Έλληνες και Κρήτες
που ζούμε μακριά από την Πατρίδα μας, πρέπει πάντα να είμαστε ενωμένοι για να θυμόμαστε
την ιστορία του νησιού μας και να κρατάμε τα ήθη και τα έθιμα της Κρήτης μας και ποτέ να μην
ξεχάσουμε όλους που πολέμησαν για την ελευθερία του νησιού μας.

On the 20th of May 1941, Crete was the scene of the largest German Airborne operation of WWII,
and the first time in history that an island had been taken by airborne assault. Afterwards, Crete was
dubbed the graveyard of the German parachutists; nearly 4000 were killed or declared missing in
the assault. It was also the first time the Germans had encountered stiff partisan activity, with
women and even children being involved in the battle. The allied forces included Australian, New
Zealand, Greek, and British armies confronted overwhelming odds while defending the island during
the campaign. The annual commemoration allows the allied communities, to remember those who
valiantly and heroically gave their lives for freedom.
On behalf of the Cretan Association of Canberra and Districts, I wish to congratulate the Cretan
Federation, in organising the commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

Επέτειο της Μάχης της Κρήτης την οποία τιμά ολόκληρο το ελληνικό Έθνος. Η Μάχη της Κρήτης έχει
εξέχουσα θέση στην σύγχρονη Ελληνική ιστορία, διότι εκεί γράφτηκε μια από τις λαμπρές σελίδες
δόξας. Ο ηρωισμός που έδειξαν οι αγωνιστές της ελευθερίας στην Μάχη αυτή αποτελεί ορόσημο που
προσδιορίζει τη ζωή οριοθετεί και διαγράφει πορεία των νεοτέρων γενεών.
Στον τιτάνιο αγώνα των Κρητών ιδιαίτερης σημασίας υπήρξε η συμβολή των φίλων μας Αυστραλών,
Νέο Ζηλανδών και Άγγλων με τους οποίους μας συνδέουν δεσμοί φιλίας και κοινών αγώνων γα την
ελευθερία και τα ανθρώπινα ιδανικά που το Ελληνικό πνεύμα παρέδωσε στην ανθρωπότητα.

On May 20th, 1941, the skies above Crete were filled with a strange new phenomenon - thousands of
Nazi paratroopers landing in a massive invasion of the island. Hitler expected a swift, easy conquest
which would complete his occupation of Greece. Instead, he encountered vigorous resistance from the
Cretans, foreign residents, and Allied forces based at Maleme Airbase and other points on the island.
While the Third Reich was ultimately successful in occupying the island, Crete exacted such a price
from the German forces during its ten days of resistance that the Fuhrer abandoned plans for any
similar attacks elsewhere, bemoaning the loss of almost 4500 elite paratroopers.

Οι Κρήτες ξέρουν πραγματικά να πολεμούν και αυτό ήταν η αιτία που σήμανε την αρχή και το
τέλος του Χιτλερικού Ιμπεριαλισμού. Σήμερα τιμούμε την μνήμη αυτών που θυσιάστηκαν για να
απολαμβάνουμε την ελευθερία. Πάντα ενωμένοι στην μακρινή αλλά φιλόξενη Αυστραλία μπορούμε
να διατηρήσουμε και να διαφυλάξουμε αυτά που μας παρέδωσαν οι πρόγονοι μας.

This year for the 70th time we commemorate the bitter fighting on Crete in May 1941. It began just
after dawn on 20 May 1941. Many of the 7700 New Zealand soldiers stationed on Crete were finishing
breakfast when hundreds of German transport aircraft – some towing gliders – rumbled in over the
Mediterranean island. The air above was suddenly filled with parachutes as thousands of elite German
paratroops began to descend from the sky. This was the start of what is known as the Battle for
Crete. For 12 dramatic days New Zealanders, Australian, British, and Greek troops, assisted by Cretan
civilians, tried to repel a huge airborne assault by the Germans. They almost succeeded. Many New
Zealanders made it off Crete, but thousands were left behind: more than 2000 were taken prisoner;
671 died. Among those evacuated were Charles Upham and Alfred Hulme, both of whom won the
Victoria Cross (VC) for their actions on Crete. A few New Zealanders took to the hills, sheltered by the
Cretans who, to this day, remember New Zealand’s role in this key battle in the Second World War. We
remember the outstanding courage and compassion of the men and women of Crete who selflessly
risked reprisal to provide shelter and care for the many stranded Allied Servicemen. Strong and
enduring bonds of friendship respect and affection were forged between our peoples. Our heartfelt
thanks go out to the survivors of the Crete campaign and their families. We owe them more that can
ever be repaid.

ευημερίας είναι επιδίωξη των πολλών. Το να πεθαίνει όμως αυτόβουλα για όλα αυτά τα αγαθά είναι

Η εποποιία της Μάχης της Κρήτης αντανακλά τη δικαίωση
των αγώνων των λαών απέναντι στην αυθαιρεσία, τη
μισαλλοδοξία και την ωμή κατακτητική ορμή των ισχυρών
όταν αποπειρώνται να χειραγωγήσουν και να υποδουλώσουν
ελεύθερα μυαλά και ζωές.
Αντιμέτωποι με μια τέτοια αιφνίδια, βίαιη και αλαζονική
επιδρομή βρέθηκαν οι Κρητικοί το Μάιο του 1941. Δεν
λιποψύχησαν, δεν υποχώρησαν, δεν υποτάχθηκαν.
Στάθηκαν υπερήφανα, με τόλμη, αξιοπρέπεια, προσωπική
υπέρβαση και θαυμαστή γενναιότητα, απέναντι στον
προκλητικό, σαρωτικό, ναζιστικό επεκτατισμό, γνωρίζοντας
τον άνισο χαρακτήρα της αναμέτρησης που προοιώνιζε
αιματηρό, στρατιωτικό αποτέλεσμα.
Το ελεύθερο φρόνημα τους, η αυτοθυσία και η αυταπάρνησή
τους σηματοδότησαν την πορεία του πολέμου και
καταξιώθηκαν ως σύμβολα πανανθρώπινων αξιών.
Αποτελεί εθνικό μας χρέος η διαφύλαξη της υπέρτατης θυσίας
του λαού της Κρήτης στη Μάχη του 1941 η οποία εκτός των
άλλων ήταν αντίσταση απέναντι στο ρήγμα τους ανθρώπινου
πολιτισμού, ήταν και παραμένει αγώνας για την ελευθερία ,
κυματοθραύστης κάθε επίδοξης ολοκληρωτικής, απαξιωτικής
και καταστροφικής απόπειρας ενός λαού απέναντι σε κάποιον
άλλο.

Συμπληρώνονται φέτος 70 χρόνια από τη φοβερή ώρα, που
η Κρήτη αναδύθηκε κι ορθώθηκε, σαν το θεριό μέσα απ’
την καυτή θάλασσα του πολέμου, που έκαμε τα παιδιά της
ανθρώπινο τείχος κι ασπίδα της, που ατένισε ατρόμητη,
γεμάτη ψυχικό σθένος και απελπισμένη αποφασιστικότητα
τη θύελλα, που είχε φθάσει κι ατσαλώθηκε απέναντι στον
σιδερόφραχτο γίγαντα, που ήρθε να πατήσει την ιερή της γη.
Εμείς οι απόγονοι τους, θα συνεχίσουμε να αγωνιζόμαστε
και να πρωτοστατούμε στο “Ποτέ πια πόλεμος”, αλλά
και θα λογαριάζουμε σωστά το βάρος του Χρέους, που
κληροδοτούμε στις νέες γενιές. Το δικό μας βαρύ χρέος
είναι να συνεχίσουμε να προσφέρουμε στα παιδιά μας τους
ηθικούς θησαυρούς της εθνικής μας κληρονομιάς. Μόνο έτσι
θα νοιώσουν και θα γνωρίσουν ακόμη καλύτερα με πόσες
θυσίες διασώζεται το αγαθό της Ελευθερίας από τη βουλιμία
των κάθε λογής εχθρών του καιρού μας και θα μπορέσουν να
σταθούν αντάξιοι συνεχιστές όλων εκείνων, που θυσιάστηκαν
για την ανθρώπινη αξιοπρέπεια και τιμή.

Σήμερα, που η χώρα μας βιώνει μια πολύ δύσκολη κοινωνικοοικονομική συγκυρία. το μεγαλείο της Μάχης της Κρήτης,
οι συμβολισμοί της και τα μηνύματα της επικαιροποιούνται
για να οπλίσουν με ψυχική δύναμη, σθένος, ελπίδα και
θάρρος τους Κρητικούς αλλά και όλους τους Έλληνες για
ν ανταπεξέλθουν σε αυτή την κρίση που υπερβαίνει τα
οικονομικά κριτήρια και διαχέεται στη κοινωνία, τις δομές
και τη λειτουργία της, τον Πολιτισμό και τη φυσιογνωμία
της πατρίδας μας, στην ίδια μας την εθνική υπόσταση και
συνείδηση.
Ο εορτασμός της Μάχης της Κρήτης,
απεκδυμένος από στοιχεία στείρας και
άοσμης παρελθοντολατρείας, αποτελεί
σταθερό προσανατολισμό για το Μέλλον.
Είναι Πείρα, Δίδαγμα, Σύμβολο,
Κανόνας Ζωής.

My name is Yianni Rerakis and I am a third generation Cretan. The battle of Crete has great significance
to me as it was a battle that our forefathers fought with great disadvantage against an almost
indestructible enemy, knowing defeat meant being under the rule of the Germans. I feel great pride
when I think about the battle of Crete, acknowledging and appreciating the ultimate sacrifice so
many took, willingly, to protect our land. The Battle of Crete is something I will never ever forget as
if it wasn’t for our brave predecessors things not only in Crete alone but in all of Greece may be very
different today. This battle couldn’t have been fought without the remarkable help and sacrifice but
those who travelled around the world to fight in an unknown country. I speak of the English, Australian
and New Zealand soldiers.

The battle of Crete has brought my grandparents and I closer, from as far back as I can remember they
would tell me the heroic stories of Cretans both young and old, how they took it upon themselves to
fight and kill as many Germans as they possibly could, most of them fighting until they were caught or
killed. Stories such as of my great grandfather Niko Rerakis, who walked from his village of Episcope
(Mylopotamos) to Iraklion and single handedly knocked out the telecommunications equipment killing
several Germans in his journey and saving countless amounts of lives. Stories like these emphasise the
importance of this great battle and it has helped me develop a great love and passion for Crete and its
traditions such as dancing and music.
I am a strong believer in keeping the traditions of all of Greece but those of Crete especially, passing
them on through the future generations of Australian Cretans. Participating in events such as the
remembrance march of the Battle of Crete, joining the Cretan youth dancing groups and attending
annual dances put on by the Cretan associations.
We are proud people us Cretans, very passionate and proud of who we are and where we come from,
and this definitely one of the major reasons why.

My name is James Zoumis and I have been an active member of The Cretan Brotherhood of Victoria all
my life.
Both my parents have ancestry from the beautiful island of Crete and have shown me the rich culture
that I have enjoyed and embraced with open arms.
Being the 70th anniversary for the battle of Crete has made me recognise how fortunate I am. If it were
not for those who fought and Fell in this great battle I would not have the opportunity to enjoy the
music, dance, cuisine and culture that is such a significant part of my every day life.

My name Steven Lazos and I am 14 years old. My mother has mother was born in Heraklion on the
island of Crete.
In 2008 I was fortunate enough to travel to Crete on educational camp. This opened my eyes to how
rich and strong my cultural background is.
From that moment on I have learnt to play the Lyra and have embraced my position in the dancing
group which I remember younger I detested.
This year being the 70th anniversary for the battle of Crete, has helped me recognise how lucky I am
that the people of Crete and their allies fought to protect the beautiful land and its culture.

Austalia and New Zealand.
My love for Cretan Culture began when I first started dancing at 5 years of age. Since then I have
embraced the creatan culture and all that it is.

THE CRETANS OF OCEANIA FROM THE 19TH CENTURY – A new landmark publication
about the Greeks of Cretan origin in Australia and New Zealand has just been released
by the Pancretan Association of Melbourne – Australia. It is the result of eight years of
research and writing by Socrates Tsourdalakis. The book initially covers the arrival of
the first Greeks in Australia and the history of the settlement of the Greek community
in Australia and New Zealand, from early in the 19th century until today. It then
addresses in great detail, on a state by state and territory basis, including New Zealand,
the settlement of the Greeks of Cretan origin in each area, their social activities and
the history of the various Associations and Brotherhoods that they established. The
book is full of the names of those involved over the years in the activities of the Cretan
community, provides details of the
major social activities and events and is full of photographs of those unforgettable
occasions when the whole Cretan community gathered together to celebrate their
Cretan ancestry, customs and traditions. The book can be purchased from the

DVD / CD MARTSAKIS IN AUSTRALIA – The Pancretan Association of Melbourne Australia is proudly launching its first ever recording of a Cretan Musician that visited
Australia. The month of May in 2010 saw the second visit of the great violinist Antonis
Martsakis together with Nikos Marentakis and Giorgos Klostrakis who together for
over 5 days kept the beat of the Cretan Music alive. Its this, that the Association has
captured in a CD and DVD, which it feels should be shared with all Cretan Music

A TRIBUTE TO NIKOS XYLOURIS – It took over 24 years since the death of Cretan great Nikos
Xylouris for the Cretan Community to honour him, since it never had the opportunity to see
him live since his passing in 1980. It wasn’t until April 2004 that the Pancretan Brotherhood
of Melbourne and the Rethimnian Association of Melbourne “ARKADI” under the auspices of
the Antipodes Festival hosted one of the largest Cretan Concerts in Melbourne ever, with over
1000 people in attendance. This concert has been recorded and is now available on DVD for
